  • Update the system:
  • Lastly, install the stable version of WINE.

While using a native Safari 5 client in Linux can be helpful for some users. This particular version of the browser can present some issues, especially if you are visiting modern websites. This is mostly because the Safari 5 browser no longer receives new updates from Apple.

As a result, using this version of Safari can result in either broken or insecure websites. For example, it is not possible to access YouTube from a native Safari 5 client.

Linux Safari Install 10 Incompatible Youtube

One way of dealing with this issue is to use a modern browser and convert it to look and feel like the Apple browser. For example, it is possible to take Firefox and theme it to look like the modern version of Safari.

Converting Firefox to look like Safari is relatively simple with the WhiteSur-gtk theme for Firefox.

  • Download the theme by either downloading the ZIP file from the author’s Github page or running the following command:

Is it possible to install Safari in Linux using the Mac installer?

Sadly, no. While it is possible to install DMG files in Linux, the native Safari browser for macOS is purpose built to only run for that operating system, as the browser uses Mac-specific functions which allow it to integrate well into macOS. For example, the Quick Note feature in Safari relies on external Apple programs to work properly.

I already have WINE installed. Is it alright to install PlayOnLinux on top of it?

Yes! By default, PlayOnLinux creates its own set of virtual drives where it places the custom WINE version that it uses. Because of that, it is safe to install PlayOnLinux alongside with a mainline version of WINE. For example, when you install Safari through PlayOnLinux, it creates a clean sandbox where it installs all the programs and WINE patches that it needs.

Further, this approach also means that removing a program that you previously installed through PlayOnLinux is incredibly simple: press “Right click” on the “Safari 5” entry in the main menu and select “Remove.”

Is it possible to remove the Safari theme and return Firefox to the default?

Yes! It is relatively simple to remove the Safari theme and revert your Firefox installation back to its default settings. First, go back to the White Sur directory that you extracted. From there, you then need to type the following command: ./tweaks.sh -f -r && ./install.sh -u .

Doing that will allow you to remove all the Safari-related files for Firefox as well as delete all theme files from your machine. With that done, the last thing that you need to do is to restart the browser to reload your default settings.

Installing Apple’s Safari Web Browser in Ubuntu Linux

While Apple may be pushing Safari on Windows , the company has historically ignored Linux users. Fortunately, thanks to WINE , which allows you to run Windows applications without installing Windows, it's not too difficult to get Safari running in Linux.

The Ubuntu Unleashed blog recently posted instructions on how to install Safari using WINE on Ubuntu , but with a few tweaks, you should be able to get it running on just about any Linux distribution. The instructions even include installing the Flash plugin for Safari in WINE.

Of course if you aren't looking for the Apple-specific front-end, WebKit, the engine that powers Safari, is also used in Konqueror. ( Update: As Douglas Greenshields points out in the comments below, WebKit is actually based on KHTML (Konqueror's web browser), and it is not technically part of Konqueror .)

However, if it's the Safari interface you're after, WINE is your answer. The only real dependency, aside from WINE, is that you install Microsoft's Core Fonts, but you'll need them for just about any application running under WINE.

I tested the install out of curiosity and it worked without a hitch. As you can see in the screenshot above, I've got the Windows version of Safari running in Ubuntu and the Flash plugin works just fine. The main menu items are a little bit off, but it's still usable and surprisingly snappy.

Safari is not natively available for Linux, but you can still install it by using a compatibility layer called Wine. This allows you to run Windows applications on Linux. Here’s how to install Safari on Linux with Wine:

Step 1: Download and Install Wine

The first step is to download and install Wine. In most cases, you can find Wine in the software repositories of your Linux distribution. Open up your terminal and type the following command:

sudo apt-get install wine

Step 2: Download Safari for Windows

Next, you need to download Safari for Windows from the official Apple website. Visit the official page of Apple and head for the download section. Look for the suitable download for Windows OS of Safari and download it.

Step 3: Install Safari on Linux

Once you have downloaded Safari, navigate to your downloads folder and find the Safari installation file. Right-click on it and select “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”. This will automatically trigger Wine to run and install Safari on your Linux machine.

Note: During the installation process, Wine might ask you to install additional Windows components. You should install them to ensure Safari runs smoothly on your Linux machine.

Step 4: Run Safari on Linux

Once you have installed Safari on Linux, you can launch it by finding it in the programs menu of Wine. Or, you can use the command line to launch Safari using the following command:

wine “C:\Program Files\Safari\Safari.exe”

It’s important to note that the user experience with Safari on Linux might differ from what you are used to on a Mac or Windows. Additionally, running Safari on Linux, via Wine, can take up some resources which can affect the performance of the system.

In conclusion, installing Safari on Linux is possible via a compatibility layer called Wine. After completing the above-mentioned steps, you can access the excellent features of Safari on Linux, however, you must keep in mind that it is not an official method and that the performance may differ.

Hello, I have installed Safari, I see it in Wine, I can at it to my panel, but it will not start, I click on it and nothing happens, can you help.

Same thing here, using Ubuntu 9.10 with 64bit file system. Your instructions worked flawless and I can see the safari icon under wine as well ... but clicking on it will not start the program. No error message either. Could it be related to 64bit of Ubuntu 9.04 versus 9.10 ???

I'm pretty sure you've installed the software in question using the command mentioned: "sh winetricks corefonts flash" LOL! :D

Works fine here. I had to manually update the sha1sum checksums for flash in winetricks, and Safari didn't crash when I ran it first time, but otherwise everything is OK. Ubuntu 10.04, 32bit.

i can download that flash, but i don't know how to install it.

Is there a way to install safari on ubuntu without using wine?

yeap :) worked just fine ! Thanks. but how can I install something from the cdrom?

The animation used to run everytime and crash all the time. Next time I started safari, I typed something in the google search and pressed enter before the animation starts and then it started working fine.

I want to install Safari on Ubuntu Linux. thanks a lot tutorial

All I have to say is: Why on earth would anyone want to use crapware(safari) on a linux system?

... Chrome?

What the hell is wrong with using Opera or a different webkit browser? Yes, I know Safari uses Webcore. Or hell, pay for Mac OSX.

safari crashed after install. I re-installed it through winetricks. Works for me now.

Final pitstop on the way to a stable release

Ubuntu 24.04 Beta Released, This is What’s New

' src=

The Ubuntu 24.04 beta is now available to download — one week later than originally planned!

Ubuntu 24.04 will become the next long-term support release (LTS) and this beta will provide developers, testers, and enthusiasts time to try it out, track down bugs, and road test its new features.

Beta releases are not intended for everyday use (i.e. you’re not supposed to install it as your main OS or on machines you rely on) but, that said, many folks do.

The Noble development cycle hasn’t been without its dramas and hiccups.

Devs undertook the largest library transition in Ubuntu’s history (to mitigate the ‘year 2038 problem’), and the recent discover of obfuscated, malicious code in the Xz compression library meant every binary package in the Noble repos had to be rebuilt (hence the beta delay).

But chances are you’re not here to hear about all of that ; you’re here to hear about what’s new.

And there’s a fair bit.

Ubuntu 24.04 Beta in Brief

installing safari on ubuntu

Most people who upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will do so from the previous long-term support release, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. As such, the cumulative total of “new features” will encompass not only the things added between 23.10 -> 24.04 but everything added since 22.10.

I plan to run-through the cumulative feature set in a separate post as most people who read this site (hello 🤭) who are interested in testing a beta release are likely to be familiar with/coming from an interim release — making those ‘new’ features ‘old’ news!

What follows is an overview of the notable changes since Ubuntu 23.10, which was released last October. If you use that release then all of the stuff below will be new to you.

Installer Improvements

installing safari on ubuntu

Ubuntu’s Flutter-based installer has been revamped with refreshed visuals and more intelligible text descriptions; the order of installation steps has been adjusted; and a new panel for configuring accessibility needs introduced.

Most notable, Ubuntu’s updated installer begins a new approach to installation based on the concept of “provisioning”. As part of this, the Ubuntu 24.04 installer allows users to open a .yaml file containing a pre-filled configuration in order to automate deployment.

App Changes

installing safari on ubuntu

Since 23.10, Ubuntu defaults to a ‘minimal’ install with only a small set of ‘essential’ software preinstalled. Those needing a fully-stocked offline-friendly install with apps like LibreOffice , Rhythmbox , GNOME Calendar , etc must choose ‘Extended Selection’ in the installer.

Ubuntu 24.04 makes changes to the apps in the extended install:

  • Cheese webcam app replaced by Snapshot
  • GNOME games removed
  • Thunderbird e-mail client now a snap package

Otherwise, everything is as it was and every app has been updated to the latest version including the latest LibreOffice 24.2 series and the latest Transmission 4.0 release. This should ensure you don’t need to hunt down PPAs, Flatpaks, etc for newer builds for a while!

installing safari on ubuntu

Ubuntu 24.04 ships with the recent  GNOME 46  release, a sizeable update delivering a wealth of improvements throughout the entire desktop.

There’s a set of super-charged new Nautilus search features ; a reorganised Settings app with new panels and options; collapsable notifications in GNOME Shell; support for remote login over RDP ; faster search in the GNOME Shell overview, and more.

Welcome updates.

Foundational Changes

installing safari on ubuntu

Ubuntu 24.04 uses Linux kernel 6.8 , the latest version at the time of release.

This offers a ton of improvements and enablements, but a few notable things: Intel ‘Meteor Lake’ CPUs now hit their advertised boost speeds; Nintendo Switch Online controller support; RFI mitigations to remedy Wi-Fi issues on some AMD laptops; and zswap buffs.

The network stack has been updated to  Netplan 1.0 , enabling support for simultaneous WPA2 & WPA3 connections, Mellanox VF-LAG, improving VXLAN, and providing a  stable libnetplan1 API .

Ubuntu 24.04 changes at-a-glance:

  • Desktop installer updates
  • GNOME 46 w/ updated apps
  • Power efficiency improvements
  • Big gaming boost
  • Linux kernel 6.8.11
  • Mesa 24.0.3
  • Netplan 1.0
  • Performance tooling is now preinstalled
  • GNOME Games package removed (full install)
  • GNOME Snapshot replaces Cheese (full install)
  • Thunderbird e-mail client is now a snap package (full install)

A few things to be aware of when upgrading (from any version):

  • You can’t open DEB packages using App Center to install them
  • Thunderbird DEB is a transition package that installs the snap

The new Flutter-based Desktop Security Center tool in testing earlier in this development cycle isn’t present (not a surprise; there’s been little development on it in recent weeks).

Download Ubuntu 24.04 Beta

You can download the Ubuntu 24.04 Beta from the  Ubuntu release server right now for 64-bit Intel/AMD devices (a weighty 5GB in size). A pre-installed image for Raspberry Pi 4 & 5 is also available to download.

And before you ask, yes: you can upgrade from Ubuntu beta to the final release. Simply install all updates released between now and then. By release day you will have the same set of packages as anyone doing a clean install (and likely a pinch of cruft they don’t).

Like Ubuntu but with a different flavour? Beta builds of official Ubuntu flavours are also available for testing from today too.

To upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 from Ubuntu 22.04 you’ll need to wait until June unless you’re willing to use the command line. This is because Canonical only begin notifying LTS users of an upgrade once the first point release is made (and thus, the update is even more stable).

Select an image, desktop image.

The desktop image allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of image is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 1024MiB of RAM to install from this image.
