Japan ’s silent bamboo forests, a highland tea plantation in Sri Lanka , sleepy Vietnamese fishing villages and crumbling hill forts on the road to Pushkar – it’s fair to say Asian cycling tours are a long way from your typical Spin class. The beauty of these cycling trips is that they get you (literally) off the beaten path, away from the major tourist traps, and onto the road less travelled. There’s village homestays, sizzling street food crawls, historic temples and postcard-worthy beaches, with some jaw-dropping rides in between. Our Asian cycling guides are all lycra-clad locals – so you know you’re getting an expert cyclist, plus the lowdown on the best Pad Thai in Bangkok or Kyoto’s coolest karaoke bar. Classic Intrepid…on two wheels. That’s an Asia cycling tour.

Our Asia cycling Top 5

Cycle through the bamboo forests in Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan

A cyclist could spend a happy couple of weeks in Kyoto, waking up to steaming bowls of miso soup and riding the days away in the bamboo forests of Arashiyama or the tree-lined tracks alongside the Katsura River. Nights could be spent whisky bar-hopping in Gion or trying to spot geishas in labyrinth alleys of Ponto-chō. On our Japan cycling tour, we’ll set you up in a traditional ryokan (tatami matts and everything) and lead you out on some simply stunning day rides up to the temples of Tenryuji and Ryoanji. After we’ve explored Kyoto from edge to edge, we’ll set off on a ride to the ancient capital of Nara, stopping for a little matcha tea by the iconic Nagarebashi Bridge.

A family of tigers in Ranthambore national park in India

Ranthambore National Park, India

Of course, there are the classic India highlights (insert the Taj or New Delhi’s iconic Red Fort here), but for something a bit different, we like to ride from the Brahmin town of Bundi to Ranthambore National Park, the old hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Here, we’ll put the bikes aside for a while and go searching for leopards, hyenas, nilgai and Bengal tigers on a 4WD jeep safari. Deep in the jungle, we’ll pay a visit to the old Ranthambore Fort, an overgrown ruin that looks like something straight out of The Jungle Book. Our cycling tours are obviously pretty focussed on the ride, little out-of-the-way stops are great for mixing things up (and giving the legs a rest).

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

A UNESCO Heritage Site, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Rajarata, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth…but how often do you hear about Anuradhapura? It doesn’t pop up in a lot of travel mags, but it’s one of our favourite spots in all of Sri Lanka. And the best way to see it? A guided cycling tour. You’ll spend the day riding beneath enormous dagobas (particularly the white dome of Ruwanweli Saya) and crumbling brick towers reaching for the sky. The ruins are spread over a pretty big area, which is where the bikes come in handy. We’ll cycle around the temples, visit the local museum and stop for a local lunch – maybe some paper-thin Godamba rotis or crispy hoppers topped with curry.

Cycle tour in Nha Trang, Vietnam

Nha Trang, Vietnam

Well, more specifically, the coastal highway from Quy Nhon to Nha Trang. It’s one of the most breathtaking rides we’ve found anywhere in the world: a winding road that hugs to sheer granite cliffs as they plunge into the deep blue of the South China Sea. For about 90km, you can look out over distant islands and lagoons, as well as the sand dunes far below. You’ll know you’ve reached Nha Trang when you’re fighting for road space with the scooter drivers on the waterfront promenade and smelling wafting deliciousness like grilled Nem Nuong (fermented pork mince) or hot Bun Cha Ca (a sweet seafood broth with vermicelli noodles). Nha Trang is known as the ‘Cannes of the Orient’, and it makes one heck of an entrance.

A boat off of the coast of a white sand beach in Thailand

Khao Lak, Thailand

Did you hear that? It was the sound of all your muscles relaxing. After a cruisy ride down palm-fringed roads and past smiling locals, you'll make your way down the Andaman Coast to Khao Lak, the beach town of your dreams. Chill out and unwind on the appropriately named White Sand Beach while letting the crystal clear water soothe your sore quads and a fresh coconut quench your thirst. Still feel like you need a little activity? There are loads of beachside routes to cycle in the area.

The best time to cycle in Asia

Cycle Asia with Intrepid Travel

Asking the best time to cycle in Asia is a little like the old 'How long is a piece of string' conundrum: it really depends where you want to go. For Vietnam or Thailand, you really want to get in before the monsoon hits, but also after the summer tourist swarms have departed – April and May are a good bet, the weather and the riding should both be quite pleasant. If you're cycling in Japan, the winter months (December to February) are usually out, but springtime cherry blossoms in April or May will make a stunning backdrop. The southern coast of Sri Lanka can be quite pleasant over December and January, but March is a lovely shoulder month if you're looking to dodge the summer crowds. For more info on Asia's climate (and a few hints on dodging the monsoon) check out our handy guide .

Asia Cycling Tours

Discover the best of asia by bike, or e-bike.

You don’t have to be a keen cyclist to enjoy a cycling trip in Asia. All that you need is reasonable fitness and a love for exploring the world under your own steam.

Asia is synonymous with cycling as a form of travel. The ability to absorb the landscapes from two wheels, explore the backroads that few travellers ever see. The flexibility to hop off your bike when you want to take a picture or to share a laugh or smile with the local people, all combine to ensure that a cycling trip in Asia is one of the most authentic ways to experience the region.

Vietnam is one of the most popular Asian cycling destinations on offer. However, the various islands of Japan , the rarely travelled rural village roads of India or Sri Lanka , while the close proximity of countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam allow for amazing cross border itineraries.

WHAT OUR ASIA CYCLING TRIPS INCLUDE

Our quality Asia cycling trips provide you with everything you will need from well maintained bikes, support vehicles, bike mechanics and comfortable accommodations to most meals.

NERVOUS ABOUT FITNESS: HIRE AN ELECTRIC-BIKE

If you're a little nervous about your fitness, ask us about hiring an electric bike on our many China, Vietnam and Japan cycling tours. See below for more details on our e-bike options.

MULTI-ACTIVITY ADVENTURES

If you prefer not to commit to a pure cycling trip, many of our active trips in Asia are multi-activity adventures, trips that combine cycling with walking, and even paddling.

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH CYCLING IN ASIA

In 1978, we were the first adventure travel company to offer cycling experiences in India and China. Later, in 19190, we operated the first ever Vietnam cycling trip. We have operated cycling trips in Myanmar, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and many other destinations within India.

POPULAR ASIA CYCLING DESTINATIONS

Cycling holiday: Angkor Wat - Saigon 10days Tour

Cycling holiday: Angkor Wat - Saigon 10days

There were two parts of the tour – Cambodia and Vietnam. Cambodia five stars hands down, Vietnam three stars, at a push. And the main difference was in the guides. Cambodia was simply brilliant, better than I could ever imagine. Sin, our guide, was simply the best and the whole tour was really well organised. We were informed of what the day is going to be like, breaks were timed perfectly, Sin and the driver always prepared various refreshments for us, every day different speciality so we got to taste Cambodian food. Sin brought us to a local market, introduced us to different fruit, Cambodian traditional desserts, I would’ve never tasted this without a local guide that wanted to show us the best from Cambodia. I was leaving Cambodia with a smile on my face and a bit of sadness of saying goodbye to Sin. We crossed the border to Vietnam and that was when it all went downhill. After a very lengthy process crossing the Cambodian/Vietnamese border we met our new guide, Mr. Trung. The first impression wasn’t the best and, unfortunately, set the tone for the rest of the tour. We had asked, numerous times, to get local experience instead of having meals in touristy restaurants, yet, Mr. Trung booked a hotel for our dinner in Chau Doc, even though there was one restaurant right next door and another across the road. Hoping for the next day to be better, unfortunately, it got worse. Starting at 7.30am and arriving in our new hotel at 7pm, with barely any breaks. No fruit, drinks, refreshments, unless you want to call a banana and a handful of peanuts that. We eventually had to ask for lunch, Mr. Trung found some random home place where they made beautiful food for us, which was a great experience. Off for more cycling, no communication from the guide, no showing us what’s around, where are we cycling, we had to ask for another break, as the weather was scorching and we were running out of water. After finishing the cycle for the day we boarded the van and drove for 3 hours to Can Tho, sourced our own dinner and barely spent 12 hrs in the place before setting off again. Can Tho looked like a place worth exploring, unfortunately we didn’t get to see any of that. Another day, another cycling in a loop and boarding the van to get to our next destination. The Vietnamese part was disappointing, as I assumed we would cycle to get closer to our next stop, not cycle practically in a circle and then drive. Fruit, snacks, drinks were non-existent, until the last day of the tour. The food was amazing though and choice of places to eat couldn’t have been better. However, Mr. Trung didn’t seem to be interested in the tour, interested in us as a group, was distant and never bothered to learn our names. To him, I was a ‘miss’, ‘lady’ or ‘excuse me’. He barely took any photos, didn’t engage in conversations much and his English was poor. Complete opposite to Sin. Overall, I am delighted I chose a cycling tour as it helped me to get to know the countries much better than just driving around sitting on a bus. Cycling through villages, people waving at us, kids giggling, cows getting in the way, monkeys walking around, catching sunset in Phnom Penh, this all made my holiday unforgettable.

I did an individual tour with Thai in the Mekong Delta. It was perfect for what I wanted, biking on narrow lanes, seeing the countryside where tourists don't go and even talking to the people. Highlights were being pulled into a wedding party and visiting his uncle's house.

Cycling Mekong Delta in Vietnam 5 Days

We had an amazing time on this tour, and it more than beat our expectations. The support vehicle allowed us to avoid the "less than ideal" roads to cycle on and allowed us to spend our time enjoying the nicer more interesting routes. We rode through beautiful Rice fields and villages, along the river, through rural areas. There were lots of additional activities included such as the floating market and floating village, plus a few additional things we weren't expecting. Ngan/Mr Leo was an excellent guide, and was one of the best we have had on any tour. He was knowledgable, communicative, approachable and led the cycling at a pace that suited us well. He even invited us to his home and introudced us to his family for dinner. He is a great asset to the company, and we feel very fortunate to have had him as our guide. It is worth noting that this tour was advertised as being with e-bikes. However, standard mountain bikes were provided (Trek Marlin 5). This was not an issue for us, as the area is very flat, and we are used to cycling 50-60km a day. However, those who are relying on e-bikes should confirm that these will be provided. Additionally, although mountain bikes are appropriate for the rough and bumpy terrain found on parts of this tour, It might be worth the company replacing the mountain bike seats with more comfortable touring seats. Mountain bike seats are not designed to be sat on for 50km at a time, and even with the gel covers provided, they were painfully uncomfortable by the third day. The only critical feedback we would give is that the hotels are quite high end, and a budget accommodation choice would have been appreciated as a reduced cost option. Also, more importantly, we felt the bikes could do with receiving a little more maintenance, particularly given this is a 5 day tour. On one of the bikes we had, the brakes barely worked and had to be pulled very hard to slow down, and they made a very loud noise when applied. This is not really ideal for a 5 day tour, and could have been very dangerous. On the other one, the handlebar grips were perished and breaking away into rubber flakes and caused blisters on the hands and needed gloves to be worn (although it was too hot for them really). Overall the trip was one of the best trips we have taken part in and one of the best experiences we have had whilst travelling (over 80 countries). We wouldn't hesitate to reccommend it to anyone (and already have).

My family and I have had the pleasure of doing several tours with Mr. Biker Saigon. Thai and his crew are THE BEST -- they are experienced, organized, responsive, and extremely knowledgeable about the routes and local communities. One of our trips involved a group of 14 riders with different abilities. Each day during the four-day tour, Thai and his team provided us with several options to make sure everyone felt comfortable and also challenged. We lived in Vietnam for three years and these bike tours with Mr. Biker Saigon were the highlights of our stay in this beautiful country.

williamartk Edmonton, Canada Life changing experience Review of Vietnam By Bike Reviewed today This was a 10 day cycling tour Angkor Wat to Siagon through Vietnam by bike .I really don’t know what to say but Amazing, Amazing, Amazing. My wife had wanted to do this cycling trip through Cambodia and Vietnam for over 15 years. We decided to do it for our 30 Anniversary and had some of the best experiences of our lives. Starting with Kuysin greeting us at airport, guide to hotel and of course Vuthy and Sambath. Vuthy took us on some amazing adventures through the temples of Cambodia, jungles and through villages where everyone was so friendly. It’s amazing how the children are so happy with a wave and hello and not expecting anything. The floating village on Tonle Sap Lake was incredible to see. Our rides were perfectly paced and breaks were perfectly timed, with Sambath providing great snacks, fruit and water. Every day seemed to get better and we learned so much from Vuthy‘s Knowledge of Cambodian life that would take years and dedication to learn . Temples, villages, silk farm, Floating village, I could keep going on but I need to thank The Vietnam team as well, Ut welcoming us with a nice What’s App when we entered but then we met Loc Ly and his driver Tong . Loc sensed early we didn’t like crowds and kept us away from busy tourists areas and made sure we saw the great sights before the crowds arrived. He took us on great trails through villages, canals, forests and past rice fields , to an island stay . Loc also took us on a couple boat rides and we ended the trip with a beautiful night cruise supper. Loc shared his passion and great knowledge with us that would take years to learn. We are extremely grateful for all the wonderful things we were shown and experienced. , Cobra wine, , puffed rice, coconut candy making, rice refinery and much more. Taking us to delicious local restaurants to experience true Vietnamese food. These guides went far and above our expectations. What we learned from these guides cannot be learned anywhere else and the experiences they provided are priceless. Another review gave a 6 out of a 5 star review but I say 5.999999999 / 5 . 9 is said to be lucky and I wish nothing but the best for my new friends as they are not just guides anymore they are like brothers. Wishing them all a healthy and prosperous New Year. I do also wish to say the hotels we stayed at were all excellent and had kind staff and were able to communicate with us as we could only speak English. Date of experience: January 2024

The tour was brilliant. Our two guides (Chau and Nick Nac) were fantastic. They took great care of us, arranged some really interesting cycling routes, and were very informative about the local culture. I would definitely recommend this tour (although I'd probably do it in a slightly less hot time of year).

Reviews of South East Asia Bike Tours

Our tour with Intrepid was amazing! No details were spared. We were very well taken care of. Our tour guide Seen; with us the entire time, was conscientious, super attentive to our needs, fun, friendly and always available to provide us with ideas, guidance and support. The guides in each country of our journey, especially Lam from Vietnam and So Koom from Cambodia, were very knowledgeable of the history and their cultures. We learned so much from them. The cycling was the best! Bikes were fantastic to ride and all the mechanics took such good care to prepare our bikes each day. There were always plenty of snacks and water along the route with adequate stopping/rest points. Loved it and would highly recommend.
The accommodations were very nice, especially the homestay
Bicycle tour with intrepid was wonderful

Redefining adventure: 6 e-bike tours in asia to fuel your wanderlust.

By Reece   Posted 11th Aug 2023

Asia's allure is undeniable, and the promise of adventurous exploration beckons. But let's face it – when those rolling hills stretch before you, you might find yourself second-guessing the whole "cycling through Asia" dream. If you're like many riders, the mere thought of tackling steep inclines can trigger a whirlwind of mixed emotions – excitement, anticipation, and a dash of hesitation. Don't worry, you're not alone.    The idea of navigating Asia's captivating locales on a bike, all while facing the undeniable reality of gravity, can be a tad intimidating. But we're here to let you in on a little secret – a game-changing secret that can transform your entire cycling adventure into something beyond extraordinary.    Enter: E-bikes. Think of them as your two-wheeled companions, the trusty sidekicks that are here to provide that extra boost of oomph just when you need it most. Those hills that once seemed daunting? Now they're your playground.    You glide through valleys, soar over obstacles, and bask in the beauty of Asia – all while staying as cool as a cucumber.     Yep, you're the master of your journey, pedaling as hard or as lightly as you fancy .    So, are you up for a ride that's exhilarating as it is effortless? Pedal up as we change the way you see Asia forever with six of the best e-bike tours. Let's begin.

Japan E-bike Tour

Japan is becoming known as a world-class cycling destination and the island of Shikoku is the brightest jewel in the crown, with e-bike touring routes so beautiful you'll pinch yourself to make sure it's real.     This Japan E-bike Tour unveils a mesmerizing 7-day odyssey across Shikoku, the island that's a treasure trove of captivating experiences.     Wake each morning to a carefully curated traditional meal, that you can enjoy while dressed in your Yakuta (Japanese gown). Take a hot bath in the natural spring, explore ancient castles, sake breweries, and hidden gems that punctuate this adventure.     And those niggling concerns about conquering long routes or steep hills? Worry not! Our dedicated e-bike tour is your passport to fearless exploration, turning every uphill challenge into an exhilarating memory.

Duration : 7 Days/ 6 Nights

E-bike of choice : Yamaha Cross Core E-bike , designed for ultimate comfort and power with a class-leading lightweight frame.

Vietnam E-bike Tour

Craving adventure with a side of seaside allure? Look no further! This Vietnam E-bike Tour whisks you on an action-packed 7-day voyage.     From the highlands of Dalat to the sun-kissed beaches of Nha Trang and Quy Nhon, all the way to the heritage-listed town of Hoi An. This tour gives you the perfect balance of Vietnam's rich customs, culture, history, and delicious food, and we won't be at all surprised if it makes you want to return again and again.    An e-bike levels the playing field without leveling the terrain, so e-bike riders can still enjoy those highland views without worrying about the climbs.     Plus, riding as a dedicated e-bike group you'll be able to cover good distances each morning, leaving afternoons open for activities and making the most of each destination.     So, whether you're an avid cyclist or a seeker of new horizons, this tour has your name written all over it.    Duration : 7 Days/ 6 Nights

E-bike of choice : Our newest e-bikes! The Lynx and Falcon both feature front suspension and generous sized tires to ensure you will be cruising comfortably across all touchpoints.

The Best of Bali Bike Tour

Exploring Bali on two wheels will leave you in awe! This week-long trip will let you explore three distinct sides of the Balinese landscape. Gently glide by tranquil rice paddies and quaint countryside villages before exploring Mt. Agung's volcanic slopes. Heading to the eastern coastline, traverse the black sandy beaches while admiring the rugged cliffs.     Embrace all this natural diversity as you cycle tour along comfortable roads carefully picked for their gentle inclines and lack of obstacles. This route is designed to be achievable for riders of all levels.     But if you are apprehensive about elevation, then with an e-bike you can ride without stressing about the physical exertion, giving you time to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Bali's landscapes.     **E-Bikes are available as an optional extra on this tour.     Duration : 7 Days/ 6 Nights

E-bike of choice : The Kalosi Lanes Evo e-bike offers a great balance of touring comfort and practicality. At full charge, this bike can handle up to 185km (about 114.95 mi) which is more than enough to get you through any day, with some juice left in the tank.

Taiwan E-bike Tour

Nestled within the fiery embrace of the Pacific's Ring of Fire, Taiwan is the ultimate cycling destination you never considered.     Starting in Taroko, the world’s deepest marble gorge, you’ll ride south along the stunning Pacific Coast, and then crossing the Coastal Mountains to the East Rift Valley, a lush, forgotten land of rice paddies, tropical fruit orchards, sleepy indigenous settlements, and hot springs.     The primary range runs north to south, mostly parallel to the east coast, with an accommodating buffer zone of relatively flat land sandwiched between the mountains and sea.     So, for much of this tour you’ll enjoy the mountain and ocean views without overworking your legs. That said, on some days you'll venture into the hills, taking on more manageable climbs to enjoy striking views and some fun descents.     Those on our e-bike tour will appreciate the added assurance these days, comfortable that the next climb will be as enjoyable as the last, leaving you with plenty of energy to enjoy each destination.

E-bike of choice : Giant Fast E+ E-bike , lightweight aluminum frame with a carbon fiber fork, and hydraulic disc brakes.

Chiang Mai and North Thailand Bike Tour

Northern Thailand's charm is undeniable, and the best way to uncover its treasures is on two wheels.   Your journey starts in Chiang Rai, where the ethereal White Temple sets the tone for the adventure ahead. Chiang Dao mountain rewards your efforts with breathtaking views, while Pha Daeng National Park highlights limestone karsts and tranquil waterfalls.    But the excitement doesn't stop there! As you pedal to Chiang Mai, a culinary adventure begins with a flavorful food tour. Cycling through tranquil outskirts and visiting local attractions leaves you invigorated and enchanted by northern Thailand's charm.    For those worried about the undulating terrain characteristic of this region, an optional pedal assist E-bike makes conquering hills a breeze, ensuring you enjoy every moment. You’ll return home full of memories, stories, and amazing snapshots from Thailand’s upper reaches.    **E-Bikes are available as an optional extra on this tour.    Duration : 8 Days/ 7 Nights

Cambodia Bike, Hike & Kayak Tour

This tour is all about leaving the cities and well-worn tourist trails behind and delving into the heart, soul, and essence of Cambodia. That essence is found in the villages where people have lived in harmony with the natural elements for centuries, and the best way to absorb it is with a bike, a paddle or just your own two feet, all three of which we enjoy throughout this trip.    Starting in Phnom Penh, you'll pedal along shaded trails tracing the path of Asia's most famous river, the Mekong, kayak among the rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins, and hike an ancient staircase to the cliff-top ruins of Preah Vihear temple, and dine in a local family's home, savoring the flavors of Cambodian cuisine and forging connections that transcend language.     To conclude this remarkable journey, you'll explore the iconic Angkor Wat ruins by bike, capturing the spirit of a nation with each pedal stroke.    Though almost entirely flat terrain, there are still great benefits to enjoying Cambodia’s temples, tropical rainforests, and quiet country backroads from the seat of an e-bike.    Duration : 8 Days/ 7 Nights

E-bike of choice : Cannondale Trail Neo 2 E-bike , supremely comfortable, with great front suspension and stylish integrated battery.

If Cambodia and Vietnam are high on your list, you could also consider this Mekong Bike & Boat tour . Featured at #1 in National Geographic's 17 Ultimate Adventures to Inspire , this multi-day cycle and river cruise takes you from Saigon, Vietnam to Siem Reap, Cambodia the slow way, without the need for regular hotel changes.    You see, cycling isn't merely about speed or conquering hills; it's an embrace of adventure, a dance with the unknown, and a profound connection with the world around us.     Whether you seek a smoother journey through hills, a gentle entry into longer distances, or the joy of cycling with newfound ease, e-bikes stand ready to enhance your experience.     The choice is yours, whether you opt for the classic bicycle or the pedal-assist thrill, and we eagerly anticipate sharing the road with you to redefine adventure.

CHINA-TIBET MOTORCYCLE TOURS

bike tours asia

'Like Never Before'

Riding in china-tibet.

Crossing the border from Laos you initially still ride in the tropics. Roads are in good shape and many are newly built.

As we head north the mountains get higher and the roads have more curves. Each day we gain altitude and before you know it you are riding at +3’500 meters on the Tibetan plateau.

Here the landscapes are magnificent, with huge open spaces, high snow-covered mountains, pristine lakes, and deep valleys. The riding is also about the journey!

Scenery and Culture

China is vast. Off-the-scale massive. Wildly differing dialects and climates with topographical extremes it’s like several different countries rolled into one. Take your pick from the bazaars of Kashgar, a journey along the dusty Silk Road, or spending the night at Everest Base Camp Lhasa (the capital on the roof of the world).

Three decades of round-the-clock development make some parts of the country completely unrecognizable from their more humble beginnings. Serve it all up according to taste: collapsing sections of the Great Wall, temple-topped mountains, villages that time forgot, languorous water towns, sublime Buddhist grottoes, and ancient desert forts. China’s diversity is second to none. Note that number four means bad luck and number eight good luck, once you are in China, the meaning of this will become clear.

Hospitality and FOOD EXPERIENCE

In China, there are very different concepts of personal space than those in the West. People will stand closer to you, sit closer to you and walk-in closer proximity to you than in the West.

The word “friend” is used much more liberally in China than in the West. On the first meeting Chinese will often refer to someone as their “friend” if they wish the relationship to develop, or something beneficial to come out of the acquaintance. In other words, expect to make many friends while in China.

The Chinese live to eat, and with 1.4 billion food-loving people to feed, coupled with vast geographic and cultural variations in a huge land, the flavor profile, and ingredients used in the food change drastically depending on which region you visit. Overall most Chinese food is eaten with rice or noodles and consists of vegetables and meats that are cooked quickly at high temperatures. Tea originated in China and is often enjoyed plain with no sugar or milk added.

In China, we use clean and comfortable international business hotels in the cities and charming boutique hotels in the countryside. All with leisure facilities.

bike tours asia

There is a variety of sightseeing programs for tourists who want to see Moscow and to visit the most interesting places.

The choice is really wide: there are options for walking tours, bus tours, some people prefer boat trips in the city centre, but most travellers get acquainted with the sights of the capital by themselves, taking advantage of the subway or taxi.

We provide tourists with new urban bikes and riding them is a pure pleasure.

We individually make up the tour with a tourist: you can choose standard routes or select places you want to visit.

Our instructors know the history of Moscow and they can tell you fascinating, unusual and interesting stories, you will learn a lot about the culture, customs and architecture. We often organize bicycle tours and excursions not only for tourists but also for Muscovites.

We provide guided tours in almost any weather: of course, if it is raining cats and dogs, poor visibility because of hail or a strong blizzard that can blow cyclist with the bicycle away, we don't go to the routes. In all other cases, bike tours are on: just get dressed for the weather, arm yourself with a good mood and hit the road with us!

We provide guided tours in English, Russian and Spanish. Our sense of humour knows no language boundaries and we are certain to find common ground with tourists of all ages, nationalities and social status as all the information is delivered in an easy manner and it's nothing like boring lectures from history textbooks.

Our instructors ride across Moscow every day, they know all bikeways and main routes so that they will navigate you through the best places. You can make any number of stops: get impressions, take pictures - you are not limited by anything, we are not in a hurry during the bike tours (this is an important advantage over the bus and walking tours, which are strictly time scheduled and there are just a few minutes to see monuments).

All inclusive: bike rental (chosen individually) and guide escort. Please note that we provide a 15% discount for the seniors, students and children.

We do advise to book the tour in advance for the date of your choice: our bike tours are very popular; sometimes we have a “red-ink booking” one week in advance, so you’d better to pre-book the time.

Payment for bike tour can be done by credit card or in cash on the day of the tour as well as before the scheduled date.

An interesting and intense program for tourists who like fresh air, fountains, beautiful avenues, hills, ponds and lush green areas.

All of Moscow's parks are made ready for biking and you would not have to overcome obstacles, rocky trailways and make extra effort for the passage of clayey roads.

Gorky Park - Peter the Great Statue - Neskuchny Garden - Sparrow Hills - Luzhniki - Sparrow Hills Observation Platform - Moscow State University - Novodevichy Convent - Church of St. Nicholas in Khamovniki - Christ the Savior Cathedral - Alexander Gardens.

A fascinating journey for those who fancy night-lights, high speeds and the beauty of the night sky. Moscow in the evening attracts cyclists and many take to the routes only at nightfall because, firstly, there are fewer pedestrians on sidewalks (which allows to ride at a higher speed), and secondly, night roads are totally different after the sunset.

Bolotnaya Square - Peter the Great Statue - Sparrow Hills - Neskuchny Garden - embankment of the Moscow River - Luzhniki – Observation platform - Novodevichy Convent - White House - Ministry of Foreign Affairs –Old Arbat - Gogol Boulevard - Christ the Savior Cathedral - Patriarchal bridge.

Do you want to see all the major attractions, parks, ponds, fountains, architectural masterpieces, unique skyscrapers of Moscow City, historical monuments, to plunge into the history and see the present day potentialities of the city?

If so, then you should go on the grand cycling tour that will gift you many experiences and allow you to see the places Moscow is so famous for. We are sure you will remember much of what you will have seen and in the future, you will go through the photos taken during this bicycle tour only with pleasure.

Red Square - Saint Basil's Cathedral - Bolshoi Theater - Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building - Boulevard Ring - Clean Ponds - Sretensky Monastery - Patriarch's Ponds - Ostozhenka - Old Arbat - Novodevichy Convent - Luzhniki - Sparrow Hills - Moscow State University - Neskuchny Garden - Gorky Park - Muzeon - Christ the Savior Cathedral - Peter the Great Statue.

See off the day at sunset and greet the dawn at the most exciting venues in Moscow where stunning views open over the city. The very first and the last rays of the sun illuminate the capital quite out of the ordinary, and therefore some cyclists go for a ride at twilight or early in the morning. You also have the opportunity to witness two unique events: falling asleep and waking up of the city. Well, actually even late at night Moscow is constantly on the move, but of course, it's not the same as during the day.

The main point for cyclists is the absence of pedestrians on sidewalks that allows for any speed and racing on the roads at night without any problems. In the city centre cafes and cosy street restaurants are welcomingly open all the time and we can pop in to any place our liking to take a rest, have a coffee or a bite.

Red Square - KGB - Peter the Great Statue - Bolotnaya Square - Sparrow Hills - Observation platform - Novodevichy Convent - Cathedral of Christ the Savior - White House - Patriarch's Ponds - Tverskaya street - Arbat and, optionally, night bookstore "Moscow", bars, cafes, etc.

Moscow first launched a pilot bike rental scheme in summer 2013.

The Russian cyclists bringing bike culture to Moscow

Harsh winters and the world’s worst road congestion make the Russian capital an inhospitable place for cyclists. So why does the number of riders keep on rising? Maryam Omidi reports for The Calvert Journal

It’s midnight in Moscow and hundreds of cyclists have gathered in Sokolniki Park, the starting point for a Pushkin-themed bike ride through the heart of the capital.

For the next five hours, the throng of cyclists will be joined by thousands of others and together they will take a moonlit tour of the city. With their headphones plugged into an audio recording about Pushkin’s life, they’ll pass the house where he was born, the Great Church of the Ascension where he married and several other places of significance to the Romantic poet.

The event, Velonotte , attended by roughly 5,000 cyclists, was the eighth in Moscow; previous gatherings have been devoted to equally highbrow topics from the Russian heroes who resisted Napoleon in 1812 to the avant-garde architect, Konstantin Melnikov .

Velonotte was launched in 2007 in Moscow and has since expanded to other cities in Russia and around the world, including London, Istanbul and Rome.

“It was a pioneering project for bike culture in Russia and for bringing new awareness of architecture, culture and urbanism to young people aged between 18 and 25,” says Sergey Nikitin , the founder of Velonotte. “We started with 100 people seven years ago and last year, we had 10,000 participants for the Mayakovsky bike ride.”

People still need to show that they have a lot of money with a car and an iPhone... we are trying to change that opinion

The event is one of many cycling get-togethers that have sprung up in Moscow in recent years, organised by enthusiasts looking to promote bike culture in a city hostile to those on two wheels.

“Cycling in Moscow is seen as dangerous, the roads are huge and there are a lot of cars,” says Vladimir Kumov , the founder of Let’s bike it! , an organisation that promotes cycling in Russia.

Car sales in Russia have been rocketing since the 2000s , excluding a slump in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and another more recent one caused by a weaker rouble and western sanctions over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea . The Russian automotive market grew 14% year-on-year in 2005, 36% in 2006 and 67% in 2007, according to a European Bank for Reconstruction and Development report .

By 2010, sales had returned to pre-crisis levels. The result is the worst traffic congestion in the world. According to TomTom’s fourth annual index , the average car journey in Moscow takes 74% longer than it would on a traffic-free day, a figure that rises to 141% during rush hour in the evening.

“People still need to show that they have a lot of money with a car and an iPhone,” says Kumov. “We are trying to change that opinion.”

From 9am to 10pm on weekdays, the centre of Moscow is a non-stop traffic jam

“The obvious challenge is the traffic which has grown dramatically in recent years,” says Vadim Kriger, founder of Moscow Bike Tours . “From 9am to 10pm on weekdays, the centre of Moscow is a non-stop traffic jam. Nor is it easy for cyclists to cross the streets or cycle through the cars parked illegally on the pathways.”

Although the introduction of paid parking last year has alleviated this problem, the dominance of cars continues to deter cyclists from using the streets, with many choosing to cycle on pavements instead, much to the irritation of pedestrians.

Add to this a catalogue of poor driving habits, from road rage to rear-ending, all of which have been endlessly documented on dash-cam videos and posted on YouTube , and it’s no surprise that so many in the capital prefer using other modes of transport.

Man-made impediments aside, the long and fearsome winters in Moscow make cycling impractical from November to February. It’s not only the knee-deep snow that serves as a deterrent but also the grimy slush that inevitably follows.

Moscow’s first bike lane was met with a barrage of mocking photos on social media

The Moscow city government has endeavoured to make the capital more bike-friendly but their efforts have at times been found wanting. Their most successful attempt to date is a pilot bike rental scheme, similar to London’s ‘Boris bikes’ and New York’s CitiBike programme , which launched in June 2013.

In the 12 months that followed, roughly 46,500 people rented bikes, making a total of 66,500 journeys . While paltry when compared to the million hires in the first 10 weeks of the London launch in 2010 and the 8.7 million trips in New York’s first year, the Moscow scheme started small , launching with only 220 bikes at 30 docking stations, although this has since increased to 1,200 and 150 respectively.

Moscow bike tour

The scheme’s early success meant that this June, the city government announced its expansion to 4,500 rental bikes, not far off New York’s 6,000 and roughly half of London’s 8,000. It’s a coup for cyclists. Yet one concern is that the stations will all be centrally located, a somewhat futile measure given the majority of Muscovites live outside the MKAD, a ring road that separates the city centre from the suburbs.

“Moscow is a huge area and it is a challenge to commute by bike as most people live in one area and need to travel across the city to get to work or university,” says Olga Maltseva, head of cycling development at the Moscow government’s transport department.

“We’ve started to implement infrastructure that will help with bike-and-ride trips. In 2015 we’ll create covered bike parking stations at several transport hubs to allow commuters to leave their bicycles in a safe place for the whole day.” Since 2013, 1,100 cycling racks have been installed in Moscow, adds Maltseva, a figure which is expected to double by next year.

Less successful are the bicycle lanes, or lack thereof, in Moscow. The first lane, built in 2000, was met with a barrage of mocking photos on social media , depicting the multiple obstacles, such as gates, parked cars and speed bumps that blocked the path as well as open drains. Parts of one two-way cycle lane were only a metre wide.

In the past year, the city government has turned its attention to the creation of bicycle lanes in parks, which although positive, critics argue, does little to promote cycling on the roads. “I think that the authorities’ biggest mistake is to create cycle lanes for recreational use rather than travel,” says Nikolai Zalessky, researcher at the Institute for Transport Economics and Transport Policy Studies.

The authorities’ biggest mistake is to create cycle lanes for recreational use rather than travel

The decision underscores an attitude prevalent in Russia, which sees cycling as a fun activity rather than a mode of transport. According to Kumov, there are two words in Russian for cycling: ‘katatsya’ and ‘yezdit’. While the first describes cycling for enjoyment, the second refers to it as a form of transportation.

“Even when the government talks about cycling and cycling lanes, they use the word katatsya,” says Kumov. “They recently organised a car-free day including a show with dancing but this also only promotes cycling for recreation. They don’t think to lower the speed limit or have more cycle lanes. A huge amount of money is spent but not always on the right things.”

Moscow bike tour

According to cycling activist and artist Anton Polsky, cyclists should not be put off by the lack of infrastructure. In 2010, Polsky created USE/LESS , a map of easy-to-cycle routes, parking places and dangerous junctions to help riders navigate the city without the help of special infrastructure . The map received widespread media coverage and is regularly cited as one of the things driving a change of attitude towards cycling in Moscow, especially among the city’s officials.

“In terms of the lack of space and the attitudes of drivers, it’s so much harder to cycle in New York than in Moscow,” says Polsky. “In Moscow, the biggest problems are the long distances and winter.” Despite the challenges, Polsky is sanguine about the future of cycling in the city given the ever-growing number of cyclists hitting the streets each year. “From my activist point of view, I think I did what I had to do,” he says. “Now we need to lobby the Moscow government to do their job.”
