HIKING TOURS IN SLOVENIA

The julian alps strike an impressive majesty as the steep slovenian forests meet the rugged limestone peaks which rise almost vertically towards the sky..

Ryder-Walker’s Slovenian Hikes explore the heart of the Julian Alps, visiting the more accessible summits and most undisturbed reaches of the massive Triglav National Park . Beloved by the Slovenian people and tourists alike, the dramatic Julian Alps offer a five-star hiking experience that is just off the beaten path. Triglav itself is the centerpiece of the trek, the highest peak in Slovenia, and a hulking mass of limestone cliffs that rises thousands of feet above the valley floor. Below Triglav run a series of densely forested valleys such as the waterfall valley of Ukanc, which sits below the sacred Valley of Five Lakes. The trip itself begins in a town that can only be described as the Chamonix of Eastern Europe, Kranjska Gora. Kranjska Gora is an often-overlooked village that would feel at home in France or Switzerland, sitting directly underneath the most impressive ridge of the aptly named Razor Mountain. Kranjska Gora also supports a lively cafe culture that overflows onto the streets of the mountain climber and skier populated village.

Ryder-Walker travels across the awe-inspiring Julian Alps via three distinct routes. For self guided clients we offer our Julian Alps Triglav Circui t , which is a committed hike that takes you high into the most wild reaches of Slovenia, including hut stays just off the flank of the mighty Triglav. Our Slovenia Waterfalls and Gorges Trek is an easier going hike which focuses on less strenuous hikes around the villages of Kranjska Gora and Ukanc. The guided tour, Slovenia: Julian Alps Summit Series , follows a similar route to the Triglav Circuit while also setting its sights on some of Slovenia’s dramatic summits.

Slovenian culture involves a deep respect for the natural world. Much of the Triglav National Park remains undisturbed nature – especially compared to the relative resortification of other European Alpine regions. In the center of the park, we even stay in a historic hunting lodge – one of the only buildings in the entire valley. Food in Slovenia revolves around Eastern European staples. The Klobása is highly recommended for those that are looking for the best sausage of their life. Our Julian Alps Summit Series Trek is a particularly interesting route in relation to Slovenian culture because we spend so much time in the shadow of Triglav itself. Climbing Triglav is considered a Slovenian rite of passage .

Slovenia is a hugely welcoming country, filled with people that want to share the country’s often forgotten majesty . Despite remaining a bit of an industry secret, Slovenia boasts some of the most impressive looking peaks in all of Europe combined with some of the most remote and best-preserved wilderness on the continent. The hiking in Slovenia is perfect for those who are looking for a challenge, often rugged and rocky, with a handful of hut overnights. Ryder-Walker’s Slovenian tours truly put you in the heart of one of the most enigmatic mountain ranges in the world.

Slovenia's best hikes boast incredible Alpine vistas without the crowds

The diversity of landscapes in Slovenia makes walking here truly unique. From the coast to the mountains, this country-sized trekking playground offers everything from unique day hikes to thrilling multi-day expeditions.

Whether walking in the Julian Alps in the nation’s northern reaches, conquering the eastern hills of Pannonia, summiting the Dinaric Alps in the south, or strolling the karst regions in the southwest, you'll find a different adventure waiting around every corner.

Perhaps because of the sheer variety of hiking possibilities, trekking is deeply ingrained in Slovenian culture. Walking in the mountains, through the woods, across the hills, and alongside rivers is not just a way to relax, it's a key part of life.

Whatever your skill and fitness level, recalibrating with a stroll through the Slovenian countryside is a great way to see this bantam-sized country with a heavyweight heart. It's also a great way to experience rural Slovenian life. To start you off, here are our five favorite Slovenian hikes.

Best River Hike

28.4km (17.5 miles), 8.5 hours, moderate

When people think about walking in Slovenia, some version of this trek — from the source of the Soča River to the heart of Triglav National Park — is likely what they have in mind. The moderately challenging Soča Trail (also known as the Isonzo path) may not be the hardest route you’ll undertake in Slovenia (no equipment is needed beyond solid boots, water, sunscreen and a good pack), but it's a monster all the same, and ticks all the boxes you’ll need for bragging rights back home.

Starting from the source of the Soča , just north of the town of Trenta , you'll head downstream with 2864m (9396ft) Mount Triglav, the country’s highest peak, to your left. You’ll cross occasional suspension bridges, teetering over deep gorges with emerald green waters below. At Trenta, the route overlaps with Stage 24 of the Alpe-Adria Trail , following the Soča river – loaded with WWI history and popular with kayakers – to Bovec with the mighty Kanin massif rising in the background.

Sunlight meadows and mountains in the Logar Valley

Slovenia Green Solčava Panoramic Road

Best for multiple options.

37km (23 miles), time and difficulty varies depending on the route

It's easy to be awed by Slovenia's beauty when you are standing in the middle of the busy Julian Alps, but this country is pressed between multiple mountain ranges, and what really impresses is finding quieter spaces that become all your own. One such spot is the Solčava Region , nestled in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps about 65km (40 miles) north of Ljubljana .

A great way to discover this scenic region — which has a strong focus on responsible tourism — is by following the 37km (23 mile) Slovenia Green Solčava Panoramic Road , which takes walkers and cyclists through the green Logar, Robanov Kot and Matkov Kot valleys. This is one of the country’s official Slovenia Green routes that visit only environmentally-certified destinations.

Accessed off the Panoramic Road are some 15 easy hikes that will have you in a quandary about which direction to snap photos, which perched village to visit, which alpine farm to dream about, and which way to walk. For experienced trekkers, the Kamnik Saddle (Kamniško sedlo) hike at the southern end of the Logar Valley provides show-stopping views of the Brana and Planjava peaks as well as a sweeping panorama of the entire range.

From the 90m (295ft) Rinka Waterfall in Logarska Dolina Country Park , the challenging, sometimes-scree-covered route takes you to the Kamnik Saddle mountain hut at 1864m (6115ft). A more moderate approach is possible from the Kamniska Bistrica mountain hut , climbing more than 1200m (4000ft) to the saddle. For either route, helmets, gloves, and previous mountaineering experience are needed.

Wild brown bear standing in the forest in Slovenia

Rog Hiking Trail

Best route for nature lovers.

64km (40 miles), three days, difficult

Considered the nature capital of Slovenia, the Kočevsko Region is more than 90 percent covered in trees, with pristine lakes, rivers and caves surrounded by wildlife-filled virgin forests of fir and beech. The Rog Hiking Trail , which wanders through the Kočevski Rog forest in the Dinaric Alps, takes in big swaths of this wild region, which has been inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List as an “outstanding example of relatively undisturbed, complex temperate forests.”

The looping trekking route begins on the banks of the Kočevsko Lake (also called Lake Rudnik) near the only city in the area, Kočevje. Look for the bear-paw-print trail markings on trees and visit the ancient Željne Caves, then follow a trail that climbs to heights of more than 1100m (3600ft).

Expansive vistas look out over an area that shelters bears, foxes, deer, and even wolves, lynx, and eagles. On the final stage, you’ll pass the Rajhenav Virgin Forest and the Queen of Rog, a mammoth fir tree that's more than 500 years old.

Before you set out on the path, make reservations for overnight stays at one of the tourism information points around Kočevje. Consider staying the first night at the Luža Hut , about a third of the way along the route, and at the Rajhenav Farm about two-thirds of the way along the trail. While on the loop, take care to stay on the track to protect this fragile landscape and help ensure your safety in this remote wilderness.

Predjama Castle nestles into a sheer cliff wall on the Nanos Plateau

Nanos Plateau Trail

Best for thru-hikers.

15km (9.3 miles), 5 hours, moderate

When you hike this trail in southwest Slovenia, which starts in the town of Razdrto and ends at Predjama Castle , you are really getting several hikes for the price of one. The trail across the Nanos Plateau is a particular treat and one of the more popular paths in the region.

From this vantage point, you can look out over the country's karst region, the gorgeous Vipava Valley with its rolling vineyards, and the surrounding Dinaric Alps. But, this stretch also doubles as the first stage of the Via Dinarica Trail , an epic long-distance route running from Slovenia to Croatia and east into the Western Balkans. And it's the fourth stage of the Via Alpina Trail that travels west and links the eight countries crossed by the Alps.

Around 10km (6 miles) after descending from the plateau, the end of the hike brings a special treat for history buffs – Predjama Castle, lodged in a sheer cliff wall. Arrive early enough to take a tour of this well-preserved 12th-century fortress; if you buy a combined ticket, you can also visit stalactite-filled Postojna Cave , around 10km (6 miles) southeast of the castle.

Piramida-Kalvarija Nature Trail

Best hike for families.

5km (3.1 miles), 2.5 hours, easy

Tucked into the far eastern corner of the country, the city of Maribor is often overlooked — especially for hiking. Don’t think the adventure is over after you’ve clambered over the country’s western mountains; in the shadow of the Pohorje Mountain Range and straddling the Drava River, Slovenia’s second-largest city is a great hub for day hikes, including the Piramida-Kalvarija Nature Trail .

Part educational nature route and part history lesson, this easy trail starts in the City Park and heads to the hill known as Piramida , topped by the remains of a 12th-century castle. After enjoying magnificent views of the city, river and vineyards, walk on to forests and ponds to learn about bats, butterflies, frogs, and mushrooms. Circle around to end in the Kalvarija Hills for more panoramas of the surrounding mountains and the Drava River.

Additional Information

From alpine peaks and gleaming lakes to tiny villages of Venetian Gothic architecture along the Adriatic, Slovenia is gorgeous—and still relatively undiscovered by travelers, which makes it perfect for a WT adventure. We enjoy a fantastic mix of hiking, history, and culture as we make our way from the snow-capped Julian Alps to medieval Piran nestled by the sea. Along the way, we taste Slovenia's regional wines and delightful cuisine fresh from the mountains and sea. At one of our hotels, the family-run Hiša Franko, we dine at its acclaimed restaurant—the chef, Ana Ros, was recently named the "World's Best Female Chef."

Days 1-4 Ljubljana / Ptuj / Logarska Dolina From beautiful Ljubljana, we head to Ptuj for a vineyard hike, lunch at an organic farm, and a private wine tasting. After a visit to Ptuj's castle, we head to Logarska Dolina, a magnificent glacial valley of emerald meadows flanked by steep limestone peaks. We'll enjoy hikes among the traditional farmsteads of this valley and views of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

Days 5-8 Radovljica / Lake Bled / Mostnica Gorge / Mt. Krn / Drežnica / Kobarid We explore the Renaissance-era town of Radovljica, taste honey at its unique museum of beekeeping, and hike along the Radovna River. A gondola ride brings us across Lake Bled to visit the tiny island in the center of the lake, and we head to nearby Lake Bohinj for a hike through the Mostnica Gorge. After a hike below the spectacular north wall of Triglav, we head to the Soca Valley, an Old World realm that formed the infamous Isonzo Front during World War I. One of our hikes traces a route below snow-capped Mt. Krn (7,300'), with a descent to the peaceful village of Drežnica. Days 9-12 Piran In Slovenia's karst landscape, we walk through the breathtaking Å kocjan Caves, a World Heritage Site, then head to Piran, a spectacular coastal hub of the Venetian Republic. We boat to Piran Bay's wetland reserve and visit the historic salt flats at Secovlje. Depart on Day 12 via Ljubljana.

A Long-Awaited Trip to Slovenia

A couple WT adventurers shared their recent experience on our Hiking in Slovenia journey where they discovered small towns steeped in Roman history, sampled unique wines (and even tried wine grapes right off the vine), and hiked along wild rivers in dramatic mountain settings. Take a look at their photos below.

We had been planning our Hiking in Slovenia trip since 2019, but due to the Covid pandemic, our adventure was canceled in 2020, then again in May, 2021. The number of other travelers were fewer and fewer, but we were committed to explore this small country and had some friends in Wilderness Travel who persevered in the planning. The waiting paid off and we embarked on our journey with a very small group (only three of us!) on a September 2021 departure.

wilderness travel slovenia

When we finally arrived in Ljubliana after two years of anticipation, we could barely believe it. The walk around the town with Nena, our Trip Leader, was like a wonder for us. We visited this atmospheric castle during one of our walks.

wilderness travel slovenia

Our first trip with a small bus steered by Nena took us to the northeast town of Ptuj, a very old Middle Age town full of Roman history. After a lengthy walk through the Roman and medieval castle and museum we had an extra guide who took us on our first hiking day through a fantastic wine region. It was not only a beautiful place with far views to several counties visible from the vineyard, but what was more interesting was our knowledgeable guide who encouraged us to try different wine grapes directly from the vine. We could actually the type of wine each grape would create!

Hiking near river in Slovenia

After leaving from Ptuj, we drove to Logarska Dolina, an area known for its alpine splendor. Now we were really in the mountains. We hiked near a beautiful mountain river with wild waters, and loved it. We were also joined by a second guide, Tomo Petek, who became a wonderful friend to us.

wilderness travel slovenia

One day we explored the Radovna River leading up to the Sum waterfall. We were not alone here. There was a large number of local hikers who obviously loved the mountains of their own country.

wilderness travel slovenia

Moving further northwest, we arrived in the city of Bled, which is beautifully positioned around Lake Bled. We had a most wonderful hotel for three days. Above is the view from the balcony of our hotel room.

wilderness travel slovenia

We took a gondola to the island to explore and take a look to the 17th century church. We even got to ring the church tower bell while making a wish. It’s supposed to come true, they say.

wilderness travel slovenia

The historic castle directly on the lake is situated about on a rock about 1,000 feet or so above the lake. The climb up is steep, but well worth it, the views are spectacular! The castle itself contains a museum with fascinating items.

wilderness travel slovenia

From Bled we drove to the town of Kobarid on the northwest edge of the country. This is another historic site where terrifying battles took place during the first World War. We visited an interesting museum to help us understand how this country endured the war.

wilderness travel slovenia

South of Kobarid we took a wonderful hike into the Vrata Valley with its huge mountains and the most memorable hike through the valley. This area is also an important base for a large number of mountain trails explored by mountain climbers. This monument here, the Giant Piton, is in memory of the partisan mountaineers who lost their lives fighting in World War II.

wilderness travel slovenia

On one of our hikes near Kobarid we followed the Triglavska Bistrica River up to the most picturesque Pericnik Waterfall. It is cut deeply into the rock and the area near the fall is hidden from the sunlight.

wilderness travel slovenia

This is our last view from our Slovenia trip. Piran is such a wonderful town set on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea with a close view of Italian Trieste, and so much to see when wandering through the streets and along the water line. What a place to hang out and rest!

What the Trip is Like

  • 1,000 feet gain/loss
  • Day 2: 8.5 miles, 5 hours, ascent 900 feet, descent 2,000 feet

The weather in early summer and fall is generally clear and pleasant. At the times that our trips are scheduled, we tend to miss the humidity, making hiking conditions very comfortable. Expect a mix of sun and partly cloudy days, with a less than 30% chance of precipitation. Rain showers can occur at any time, so a rain jacket is advised. Our hiking adventure explores three distinct regions: the mountain realms of the Austrian Alps, the Friulian Dolomites in Kobarid, Slovenia, and Tarvisio, Italy's hill country of the Collio, and finally down to the Adriatic Coast at Trieste. In the mountainous region of Austria and around Kobarid and Tarvisio, temperatures should be in the mid 60°Fs during the day to the low 40°Fs at night. In the Collio, it can be cool, with temperatures ranging from the low 60°Fs during the day to the high 40°Fs at night. Along the Adriatic Coast, expect temperatures ranging from the mid 70°Fs during the day to the low 60°Fs at night.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Our African safaris
  • Costa Rica Wildlife

Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin, are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

Experiencing the Slovenian wilderness- Through the land of the emerald beauty

Photo of Kavitha Preetha

When we started travel-planning for Slovenia, we stumbled upon the pictures of the untouched Slovenia - more like a windows wallpaper or an old time picture postcard- but it seemed so unreal and magical.

We wanted to spare a day to experience the Slovenian wilderness- Soča river - the mysterious emerald color was so intriguing and fascinating at the same time, Kranjska Gora - the charming little village nestled in the Julian Alps, Vršič Pass - the highest mountain pass in the country, Kozjak Falls - water falling onto a green basin inside a Karst hall and everything else on the way.

How we reached?

Since it was our first time on a tourist visa in Europe, we were unsure about renting a car. We had also planned the trip during the shoulder season (to avoid the crowds and expensive flight and other entry tickets), which means public transport hasn't started as actively operational as in summers. So we started looking for any guided/unguided one day tours from the city which was the perfect way to travel without any hassle. A day trip could be easily done from both Lake Bled or Ljubljana.

How to book a tour?

There are several tour companies that offer day trips to Soca river or Triglav National Park from Ljubljana or Lake Bled. We did a round of research in Tripadvisor and shortlisted a few that we thought was worth the cost and effort and obviously with really good reviews.

Another thing to note is that, during the shoulder season, not all tour companies offer day trips on all days of the week - so we had to finalize our day by day itinerary before selecting the tour company. We also e-mailed a few and double-checked if they could arrange a trip on an off day or if they would pick us up from somewhere other than the scheduled one and so on- I had this feeling that a decent tour company would always reply to your queries promptly and professionally.

After several days of day trip hunting, we found Slovenian explorer 's Soca river valley - Nature and adventure day tour to be the perfect one. Although this trip did not have alot of reviews, the tour company as a whole was much appreciated throughout the internet. Another advantage was that the payment had to be done only on departure to the tour guide- cookie points for that!

Guided or unguided tour?

This was our first time taking a day trip and we had our own set of confusions. Should we take a guided or an unguided tour?- the one that topped the list. We had booked this and a half day tour to Predjama castle & Postojna cave. We found a guided tour helpful for the former but not for the latter.

A guided tour is always helpful when you are covering many number of places on the go especially when they are out in the nature. In such cases, more information on how the landscape was in the past, how all these places are connected to each other, how war and division affected the area, what do the locals do for a living or infact how the climate was last winter - would all prove helpful. It helps you understand the area more and about the days it has gone through till now.

But for a place like a castle or a cave or a national park where there are definite spots in fixed intervals displaying information about its history or its characteristics, you do not need one more person telling you most of the things you just read out. Also, most of such places offer a hearing guide for an extra cost with the entry ticket in your preferred language- which makes things much easier. And hence an unguided tour is recommended.

Places we covered

Kranjska gora.

We started our day trip from Ljubljana and headed towards Kranjska Gora- a little town on the way to Vršič Pass. We had our morning coffee from here and picked couple of souvenirs and continued our journey. The road trip also included alot of photo stops at some of the most scenic spots.

Photo of Kranjska Gora, Slovenia by Kavitha Preetha

We started climbing uphill with the snow capped mountains coming closer and closer with each turn. Vršič Pass is the highest pass in Slovenia, as well as the highest in the Eastern Julian Alps. There was still layers of snow from the previous day's fall and we came know from our guide that snow fall continues till May in the mountains. We spent a good time clicking pictures and playing in the snow.

Photo of Vršič Pass, Soča, Slovenia by Kavitha Preetha

Next we headed to witness the Emerald beauty in its full glory - Soča river flowing through Slovenia and Italy and finally entering the Adriatic Sea. The Soča valley region mainly has limestone and marl deposits, which reflects more of green and blue when hit by the light. Our guide knew the excellent location with the mountains on the backdrop and the river in its brightest colour.

Kozjak-Fall

We headed towards the Kozjak water falls hidden inside a stony chamber, covered in limestone sediments. After a 30min walk through the forest and crossing a stream, climb up the stairs and walk around the wet walls to discover the one of a kind falls.

Photo of Kozjak-Fall, Kobarid, Slovenia by Kavitha Preetha

Our final stop was Kobarid - another town near the Julian Alps with a rich history and food scene. We grabbed a quick snack before we headed back to Ljubljana to end the day.

Hope this helps you in some way! Have a great time in S-L-O-V-E-nia :)

Direct contact with nature

You will be able to best experience authentic Slovenia in nature, in the outdoors. There are many natural attractions in all parts of the country. Diverse flora and fauna and dynamic landscapes invite you all year round. Spend your holiday in the countryside, visit nature parks, and enjoy natural beauty. Direct contact with nature is even possible on the outskirts of towns.

A diverse green landscape

Everywhere you look in Slovenia, you will be surrounded by the colour green. Slovenia is the third most forested country in Europe, and rich in natural resources. The diverse landscape extends between Alpine two-thousanders and the sea coast, the Pannonian part is rich in thermal springs, and vineyards thrive in sunny parts of the hills in several parts of the country. There is also a branched karst underground with its wonders.

Pearls of nature at every step

Sense the natural harmony of lakes, rivers, mountains, hills, valleys, and karst caves. See the rich plant and animal world, meet the locals and learn about their customs, enjoy some authentic local food, find areas to relax in peace and quiet. Various green experiences allow you to get in touch with yourself in the midst of natural gems.

A wealth of crystal-clear waters

Slovenia is one of the most water-rich countries in Europe. It has 27,000 km of watercourses, around 300 waterfalls and numerous natural and artificial lakes. On a walk through forests and hilly areas you can come across crystal-clear springs with water, which is typically so clean that you can also drink it. Proof of the importance of clean water in Slovenia can be seen in the fact that the right to drinking water is even enshrined in our constitution.

The crystal-clear waters of Slovenia’s rivers are beautiful to look at and even more fun to play in.

Search for refreshing moments along Slovenia’s most picturesque lakes

Let yourself be enchanted and come admire Slovenia’s most picturesque waterfalls.

Protect what nature gave to us

Slovenia is home to more than 22,000 animal and plant species, including rare and endangered species. That is why Slovenia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. It is this biodiversity and countless natural features that call on us to take special care of preserving natural ecosystems. More than a third of Slovenian territory is protected and included in Europe’s Natura 2000 network, which protects biodiversity.

Triglav National Park - the Kingdom of the Goldenhorn

Triglav National Park, the only Slovenian national park, is the largest protected area in the country and covers a large part of the Julian Alps. It is named after Triglav, a 2,864-meter-high peak, which is the highest peak in Slovenia and has great symbolic importance for Slovenians. The park is home to more than 7,000 animal and 1,600 plant species. Coexistence between Slovenians on the slopes of the park and nature is reflected in various areas, thus it is not surprising that the Julian Alps biosphere reserve is the first one in Slovenia and is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves Man and the Biosphere (MAB).

The most beautiful views from the peaks

Does your heart want to go higher? In Slovenia you will find enough reasons to climb the peaks, be it mighty two-thousanders or just look-out hills. Wherever you go, your heart will tremble at the magnificent views of the landscape. And as you head back down, explore more picturesque valleys, which will surprise you with their beauty.

The marvellous subterranean world

The beauty of nature is not only reflected on the surface. Nature has true works of art hidden beneath the ground that are worth exploring. More than 13,000 karst caves have been discovered in Slovenia thus far, and cavers discover new ones every year. But that’s not all. Slovenia has the most visited tourist cave in Europe, with extremely diverse cave biodiversity, the deepest underground canyon, and many more hidden beauties waiting to amaze you with their treasures.

Postojna Cave

The largest Slovenian cave system and the most visited tourist cave in Europe, where you can take a ride on a tourist train on the world's first cave railway.

Škocjan Caves

This natural monument on UNESCO’s list of world heritage can pride itself on having the largest underground canyon in the world.

Vilenica Cave

The first tourist cave in Europe, which has been attracting visitors for more than 350 years and is the traditional venue for the Vilenica International Literary festival.

The countryside - where time stands still

If you are looking for a safe haven and escape from the city crowds, the Slovenian countryside is the right choice. Here you will find peace, a genuine connection with nature, and people who know how to listen to and live in harmony with it. Here you will enjoy authentic flavours of dishes whose ingredients come to the table directly from the field or garden. Here you will rediscover how important it is to take time for yourself.

Listen to the stories of Slovenian forests

Two thirds of Slovenia's territory is covered in green forests. There are many trails where you can go for a stroll and fill your lungs with fresh air and feel the revitalising energy of nature. Oases where no man has ever set foot are hiding in the vast forests. The forest provides shelter for exceptional animal species and plants, including beasts such as brown bears, wolves and lynxes. From the forest we get wood, which permeates all aspects of our life.

Keeping Slovenia green

We are aware of what we have, thus we strive to preserve all of our natural heritage for future generations. Join us on our sustainable path.

Protect water - do not use plastic

When taking a nature trip be well prepared and equipped. Do not use plastic, if possible. Carry your water in a reusable bottle. Almost everywhere in Slovenia you can pour yourself a cup of water straight from the tap.

Taste local food

While wandering around Slovenia, it is easy to find tasty and healthy food that will restore your energy. Wherever you wander, you will find typical local dishes. Enjoy delicious meals at Slovenian inns, tourist farms or mountain huts.

Stay healthy

Slovenian tourist providers comply with the GREEN & SAFE standards of responsible travel, including all measures set by the National Institute of Public Health. Please, comply with these standards yourself. Follow health and hygiene recommendations and stay safe and healthy.

Nature is a perfect place for all kinds of activities

Slovenia’s diverse natural landscape is perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities. There are well-maintained hiking and biking trails everywhere. The Slovenian waters invite you to activities for both calm souls and adrenaline junkies. When the landscape is covered with snow, a special box full of new outdoor activities opens.

Hiking and Mountaineering

Slovenia is an Alpine paradise. More than 10,000 kilometres of marked hiking trails and 352 mighty peaks over 2,000 metres await you. Some are only accessible to Alpine climbers and mountaineers accompanied by professional mountain guides.

Cycling and biking

Explore Slovenia by bike. Riding amid the hills and plains, mountain peaks and forests, along the coast and the karst landscape and along the rivers and lakes of Slovenia is a lushly verdant fairy tale. Different trails are suitable for on-road and off-road biking.

Water activities

Treat yourself to a swim in some of the many thermal spas and swimming pools. In summer, take a dip in the sea, lakes or rivers. Slovenia is rich in natural water resources. Visit Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj or one of the many natural swimming areas located on the coast.

Adrenaline sports

Do you enjoy special experiences? Take a look at Slovenia from a different perspective. Paragliding, canyoning, rafting, adrenaline parks, etc. Fun and exciting adventures that will transform your holidays into an unforgettable life event.

Golf courses in Slovenia are located amidst idyllic surroundings and are among the most beautiful courses in Europe. They are set in typical landscapes on the edge of the Pannonian Plain, among vineyards and rolling hills, below Alpine summits, and in the idyllic karst landscape.

Horse riding

Equestrianism and horseback riding in Slovenia have a centuries-old tradition thanks to the Lipica Stud Farm, the cradle of the world-famous Lipizzaner horses. Equestrian centres, tourist farms and ranches offer various options for horseback riding in fenced areas around farms, in meadows, and in forests.

Slovenia is a country of smaller ski resorts that are family-friendly and suitable for beginners, children and experienced skiers alike. Numerous ski schools and ski instructors, who speak different languages, will make sure that you really enjoy the snow.

Winter hikes and snowshoeing

Experience magical winter nature in a special way. Put on your winter hiking boots or snowshoes and go for a hike in a snow-covered landscape.

Cross-country skiing

The snow-covered Slovenian landscape is a true magnet for activities on the snow. One of the most popular activities among Slovenians is cross-country skiing, proof of which is that you can find arranged cross-country trails in many places all over Slovenia.

Sitting on the Eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, Lithuania is one of the cheapest destinations in Europe. Its two major cities, Vilnius and Kaunas, are the most affordable cities in the European Union.

7. Lithuania

As one of the cheapest countries to live in Europe, Lithuania is an excellent place for a budget-friendly vacation. Like its neighbor Latvia, much of Lithuania is covered in forests . Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is famed for its Baroque architecture and is home to many clubs, restaurants, coffee shops, theaters, and bars.

As much as we’d all love to find a real-life Edward Cullens from the Twilight movies, the existence of vampires is still a mystery. Yes, even in Romania. Contrary to popular belief, Romania is not home to vampires, and this is merely a myth popularized through folklore, legends, and popular culture. Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula is one famous fictional work that contributed to this myth. Vlad III, or Vlad the Impaler, a ruler in Wallachia (now Romania), inspired the infamous Count Dracula, which probably led to people connecting Romania with vampires. Sadly, there are no bloodsuckers here!

Romania is ideal for someone after an enjoyable cultural holiday. There are many cultural sites worth visiting, such as ancient churches, monasteries, and castles. The country is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage sites. Bucharest, the capital of Romania, remains a low-cost destination. If you’re willing to share, a room can cost as little as 70 Romanian Leu , or $15 .

If you enjoy blue seas and soft white sand, the Budva Riviera or the beaches of the Bay of Kotor are not to be missed. Accommodation in the Bay of Kotor can be found reasonably priced, from as little as $170 for seven nights .

Croatia has it all, from Zagreb’s modern, urban nightlife to the history-steeped city of Dubrovnik.
One vocational explains why Prague is unique: “It is hard to surpass the charming cobblestone streets of Prague’s neighborhoods where tranquil baroque gardens serve as the backdrop of majestic gates and the soothing sounds of sonatas emanate from palace windows.” If you want a destination with your partner that you’re trying to impress, Prague rivals the romantic ambiance of Paris at a lower cost.

12. Czech Republic

The Czech Republic, known as Czechia, is renowned for its stunning castles, interesting culture, and delicious beer. Prague may not be a budget-friendly destination, but it offers a more affordable option than many Western European cities . A traveler on a budget can expect to spend between $50 and $70 a night for food, accommodation, travel, and activities. The extensive public transportation networks mean travel within the country is easy and efficient.

This Mediterranean country is a big tourist destination but is also very affordable for retirees. It’s hard to believe a country so beautiful can be so affordable. For about $1,500 a month, you can retire in this island paradise.

Cyprus has been a top-rated tourist destination for years , but it remains cheaper for tourists. There are plenty of options for accommodation under $50 a day, and food and drink remain affordable. The small city of Nicosia has plenty to keep you occupied, with many bars, clubs, and restaurants.

As you meander through its ancient ruins and bustling markets, you should be cautious about contemporary political matters. Make sure to follow any cultural practices and rules.

Much of Latvia is made up of wooded areas dotted by lakes, which makes it a forest lover’s dream. Riga is the capital city of Latvia, which can provide a fun change of pace for travelers seeking a departure from all of the quiet nature.

Latvia is a solid choice for someone wanting an affordable stay amidst beautiful landscapes. Over half of the country is covered in forest, perfect for an outdoor adventure holiday . It is also great for architecture lovers, as the city of Riga has the world’s highest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture.

Much like Cyprus, this island in the Mediterranean is a magnet for retirees looking to relocate on a budget. Retirees can get a tan and interact with the tourists while living off $1,400 a month. In addition to the great year-round weather, health care is well below the U.S. average.

Lying just off the tip of North Africa between Italy and Tunisia , Malta is perfect for an affordable vacation in a sunny climate. Malta is a proven tourist destination, hosting over five times as many tourists as its entire population . Being such a small country, booking a room in Valletta’s city center is unnecessary. The town of Floriana is only a short walking distance from Valletta and offers better prices .

Even though Estonia has been linked with Russia as part of the former Soviet Union, culturally, it shares a closer kinship with its neighbor to the north, Finland. Settled on the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland, this European country is known for its rocky, scenic coastline and the capital city of Tallinn’s charming old town.

Slovakia, along with the Czech Republic, formerly made up the country of Czechoslovakia. In 1993, Slovakia became an independent nation after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Not only does Slovakia have an energetic nightlife scene and medieval castles in its capital city of Bratislava, but the pristine lakes and colorful mountains of the High Tatras are a sight to behold as well.

18. Slovakia

If you like wine, you’ll love Slovakia. With its age-old wine industry and affordable prices, Slovakia offers an opportunity for a budget-friendly wine-tasting tour . There are also many UNESCO Heritage sites , such as the Dobšiná Ice Cave or Spiš Castle.
