Scottish music legends The Proclaimers have spared fans a 500-mile journey after confirming back-to-back live dates in the Capital next year.

The Auchtermuchty twins are set to take the Edinburgh Playhouse from misery to happiness on December 9 and 10, the venue has confirmed.

The brothers, famed for hits including Cap in Hand and Sunshine on Leith , are set to record their 12th studio album in 2022 before heading out on tour - including a main stage appearance at the Isle of Wight festival in June.

The album will be their first since the release of 2018’s Angry Cyclist - coinciding with their last performance at the Capital theatre.

Tickets for the gigs are due to go on sale this Friday, November 26.

The title for the 12th album is yet to be revealed by the brothers, however they are due back in the studio early next year.

The tour will see the pair perform in four major English cities and most in Scotland when it kicks off in October.

The Proclaimers are a Scottish folk rock group fronted by identical twins Charlie and Craig Reid. Their sound captures the rustic roots rock aspect of artists like Bob Dylan, but lends equal credit to the shimmering pop and wry lyricism of acts like Orange Juice and Harry Nilsson.

The two brothers were born in Leith, Scotland and spent their childhood amongst the cities: Edinburgh, Cornwall, and Auchtermuchty. During their time in Auchtermuchty they were enrolled in Bell Baxter High School and became involved in several punk bands. The Reid brothers eventually broke out on their own and formed the Proclaimers in 1983. While this project strayed from the harder forms of punk it still incorporated many of the genres ethos and stylistic attributes; however, folk/pop seemed to be at the heart of their sound.

The Proclaimers did not release an album until several years after their formation, rather they spent a large potion of their initial stages touring. The group did release a couple demos in this early period, one of which found it’s way to the brit-pop group the Housemartins. This act showed much enthusiasm towards the demo and invited the Proclaimers to open for them on their 1986 tour.

Things seemed to fall in place for the band after this experience. In January 1987 they were featured on the TV series “The Tube” and later that year their 2nd single “Letter from America” took No .3 on the UK Singles Chart. This single appeared on their debut studio album “This Is the Story”, which was released on 29 June 1987 through Chrysalis and has since been certified gold.

Their sophomore album “Sunshine on Leith” came out a year later and boasted three hits, which included their self-titled track “Sunshine on Leith”, “I’m on My Way”, and perhaps the biggest song of their career “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”. The latter of the singles brought them widespread international fame, topping the charts in both Australia and New Zealand and breaching the top 20 in Ireland and the UK.

This single experienced a resurgence in 1993 as it appeared on the Benny & Joon soundtrack and resultantly shot to No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This track was also extensively featured in an episode of the popular US sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” and was later re-recorded in 2007 for the Comic Relief charity. This newly revised version hit No.1 on the UK charts and also was accompanied by a successful music video chalked full of celebrities. The Proclaimers re-issued “Sunshine of Leith” in 2001 and included their popular cover of Roger Miller’s “King of The Road”, which was previously used in the Russell Crowe film “The Crossing”.

The brothers next album “Hit the Highway” did not come out until seven years later and was their only album to be released in the 90s. This album proved to be a success peaking at No. 8 on the UK Album Charts and eventually going silver. Despite this being the band’s only release of the 90s they managed to keep a strong presence in the media, having several of their songs featured in highly regarded cult films such as “Benny & Joon”, “Dumb and Dumber”, “Bye Bye Love”, “Bottle Rocket”, and “Slab Boys”.

2001 is considered somewhat of a comeback year for the Proclaimers. During this time they released their long awaited 4th studio album “Persevere” and additionally their song “I’m On My Way” was featured in the blockbuster Dreamworks’ production, “Shrek”. After their release of “Persevere” the Reids continued to steadily output material.

Their album “Born Innocent” came out on 18 November 2003 and was produced by former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins. “Restless Soul” followed in 2005 and was in turn proceeded by 2007s “Life with You”, which placed at No. 13 on the charts and struck silver status. Their 8th studio album “Notes & Rhymes” was issued in 2009 and it’s follow up “Like Comedy” came out in 2012.

The Proclaimers keen sense of pop hooks, direct and often humorous lyrics have earned them a devoted fan base and a following by artists like Jens Lekman, Sondre Lerche, Camera Obscura, and Belle and Sebastain.

Live reviews

A concert put on by The Proclaimers can always be expected to be inspirational and highly engaging. The band consists of twin brothers, Charlie and Craig Reid, who were raised in Scotland and they are not afraid to let their nationality steep through their music.

The Proclaimers have strong Scottish accents while singing their songs, which enhances their unique style of celtic, punk-folk music. Being twin brothers both Charlie and Craig are able to perfectly harmonize their vocals during choruses of their songs to deepen the ornate sounds of their performance. The band strongly incorporates acoustic guitars into their compositions and play catchy chord progressions that are reminiscent of 1950’s rock and roll ballads. The brothers often sing in doo-whop vocal styles, which enhance the strong pop sounds in their performance. Although the two brothers are the main members of the band, they often tour with a backing band consisting of a bass player, a drummer, a electric guitarist, and a keyboard player. The keyboardist often incorporates lush sounds of synthesizers as well as often incorporates some groovy tones on the organ. The guitarist often breaks into some jiving guitar riffs and solos during the songs.

The Proclaimers are known for their rock anthems that make the audience want to stand up and belt out the lyrics with great passion. Such songs as “Then I Met You” and “I’m Gonna be (500 Miles)” are some of the most popular hits that the Proclaimers often play live that get audiences excited. In fact “I’m Gonna be (500 Miles)” has regained its popularity after reoccurring in the television sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”. The band has often incorporated some Bob Dylan-esque harmonica playing into their songs that blends in quite well with their sound. The Proclaimers deliver much passion and inspiration into their performance belting out their catchy vocal harmonies in their strong Scottish accents that are likely to instill a great sense of vigor in the audience. Seeing them live creates for a highly fun time of great music.

You’ll likely remember that The Proclaimers were re-popularised a few years back, largely due to the association of their signature song ‘(I’m Gonna Be) 500 Miles’ with something I love - the Scottish national football team, where the song was played over the PA at Hampden after victories - and something I definitely don’t in the form of the comedy of Peter Kay, who recorded a new video for the track for Comic Relief, and succeeded in taking it to the top of the charts in the process, back in 2007. In fact, though, there’s plenty more to the pair - twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid - than just that one track, with nine albums released over the course of their career and a slew of other well-loved songs to their name, like ‘Sunshine on Leith’. They continue to tour regularly, too, with their most recent trip around the UK a mammoth effort that took them to thirty-five different towns and cities; they wrapped things up on New Year’s Eve, with a spectacular show at Stirling Castle. Last year, they played their first arena show for a while, at Glasgow’s new Hydro; with Glasvegas chosen as the rather incongruous support act, they ran through a career-spanning twenty-four song set that had fans quite literally dancing in the aisles.

The Proclaimers at the Commodore ballroom in Vancouver B.C. Canada on October 11, 2016

First of all, the opening act was a solo performer by the name of Jenny O, from New York apparently. She was crap to put it bluntly. I know the opening act is always a tough gig, people talking and generally not interested but she had a voice that was painful to listen to and her songs were generic. Mercifully (for the audience) she was only out there for 22 minutes. (yes, I was timing it). Not sure if that is how long she was scheduled to be out there or if she cut it short, but anyway, there you have it.

The Proclaimers were their usual energetic self with a great backing band.Played all their hits and a sampling from their new(ish) album. Only an hour and a half including encore, would've liked to see them play a bit longer but 1 1/2 hours seems to be about standard these days. Thumbs up.

It was a great performance, with a good choice of songs. A couple more slower pieces would have been good, too. Charlie and Craig are very musical, as are members of the band. I was standing in front of one of the amps, so I found it hard at times to make out the lyrics, but I recognized most of the songs anyway.

I first heard them six weeks ago, when their "I'm gonna be (500 miles)" was played on the sound system of our tour bus on the way to the Isle of Skye, Scotland. I looked them up on Youtube and listened to as many tracks as I could find. Then I searched them on line and found they were playing only 2 1/2 hours drive away (Pittsburgh to Cleveland), so my wife and I made the trip and stayed overnight at an Airbnb place just a block away. Entirely enjoyable experience.

The Proclaimers live are exactly what you would expect. And they do not disappoint in any way. Their vast catalogue of uplifting, heart-warming, reflective and sometimes sad songs are a total joy - and performed with great energy and gusto from a truly professional band. How many years have they been playing such mega-hits as 500 miles ? you might think that they would get bored of playing them..... well it was so fresh, that you would think they wrote it yesterday ! Bloody brilliant performance - highly recommend the brothers from Leith. Go catch them if you can - guaranteed that you will have a smile on your face for the entire evening.

We thought the show was quite good. The guys sang brilliantly. Only problem we found was it all seemed a bit rushed. They had to be finished by 10pm & we’re unsure if this was a venue thing or if they needed to catch a plane or something. With the result there was no crowd interaction, except from them saying hello. If we had interaction I think it would have brought it to another level. We decided to support one of our countries bands as we feel it’s important & we didn’t feel the love back from the guys. A bit disappointed.

You get what it says on the tin. They are just fantastic and so professional. We were in the front row at the royal concert hall and we're so close to everything. Lived it and loved the enthusiasm that the twins still show. Even if you have seen them many times before they are still one of the best live bands ever. Good musicians and great backing band. Would go and see them again in a heartbeat.

Fabulous show, did all our favourites plus the new ones. They still sound great. It's so nice to hear a british band - diction clear and audible. Such a change from the multitude of American bands.

Warm up act: Jack Lukeman has a lovely voice and is a versatile performer. Hope to see him around more

Brilliant show, the audience was dancing in the auditorium which is pretty unusual for the all seated Sydney Opera House. All the familiar tunes but lots of new ones too and the best rendition of Sunshine on Leith ever. It was a great gig, I would go again tomorrow!

Show venue was great. So neat to be up close and personal with the band. Very good life performance. The Proclaimers are true to their music. Sound great and energetic. They seemed to enjoy giving their fans a evening with great music among friends.
