Shopping for the best digital nomad insurance sucks.

Studying mountains of fine print, comparing apples-to-oranges with different rules and limits, determining if you want need covered is actually covered, reading endless reviews to see which companies will try to weasel out of paying …

I’m stressed just thinking about it!

When it comes to travel insurance, digital nomads and perpetual travelers are unique creatures. We have different needs than your typical “2-week vacation” travelers.

  • Maybe you don’t have an end date.
  • Maybe you don’t have a “home country”.
  • Maybe you carry expensive equipment you want covered.
  • Maybe you want to be covered for more than just emergencies.
  • Maybe you regularly return to home base and don’t want to buy new plans each time you leave.

Choosing the right long-term travel insurance for you can be overwhelming and time-consuming — especially when you’re busy out doing digital nomad stuff.

To make life easier, I’ve done the hard work for you and narrowed down the six best options for six types of travelers.

All you have to do is choose the one that fits your “travel type” best.

Now, this post isn’t just me regurgitating what you can find yourself on different digital nomad travel insurance websites…it’s based on PERSONAL EXPERIENCE .

I’ve been working as a digital nomad and traveling the world for the past 5+ years . Out of these six long-term travel insurance plans, I have used three extensively, and I’ve met several travelers using the others.

Not only that, but I’ve ACTUALLY MADE CLAIMS (including some very expensive claims) with many of these companies, and I know first-hand what they’re like to deal with.

Because in the end, it doesn’t matter how awesome a travel insurance company looks on paper. If they’re a nightmare to work with (or they leave you hanging when you need them most), then buying coverage is pointless.

Which digital nomad insurance plans cover COVID-19? COVID-19 threw a wrench in the whole travel insurance game. Every company on this list covers coronavirus to some extent. But make sure you read the fine print because terms and conditions change often.

Quick Summary: Best Long-Term Insurance for Digital Nomads

Is long-term travel insurance really even necessary, 10 questions to ask when comparing long-term travel insurance, safetywing – best insurance for digital nomads on a budget, world nomads – travel insurance that offers coverage for extreme activities, passportcard nomads – best insurance for nomads who want a convenient payment option, img travel health insurance – best digital nomad insurance for us citizens traveling in the us, true traveller – best long-term travel insurance for eea residents with a home base, safetywing (nomad health) – best comprehensive medical insurance for digital nomads, travel insurance tips that’ll save you time and headaches, frequently asked questions.

For those of you in a hurry to get back to your travel jobs , here are the top picks for each type of nomad:

▶ Best value overall: SafetyWing ▶ Best for pre-paid cards that avoid reimbursement claims: PassportCard Nomads ▶ Coverage for adventure activities + electronics: World Nomads ▶ Best for U.S. expats visiting the U.S.: IMG Global ▶ Best for those who visit home frequently (EEA residents only): True Traveller ▶ Best for comprehensive medical coverage: SafetyWing (Nomad Health)

Before we dive into the details of each one, there is one question I want to put to rest once and for all.

You might consider yourself a pretty safe person.

You probably don’t plan on getting altitude sickness… Or being stung by a scorpion… Or accidentally squirting hand sanitizer in your eye while traveling and chemically burning your cornea (you can’t make this stuff up, guys).

Nobody does.

I could try to drill it into your head that those types of things are called “accidents” for a reason.

Or that no matter how careful you are, things happen that are completely outside of your control.

Or that one unexpected incident could ruin you financially…

But instead of yapping your ear off with logical arguments on why you need long-term travel insurance, let me just list out some of the crazy situations I have somehow managed to get myself into while traveling (and the money I saved thanks to my travel insurance):

using world nomads travel insurance after scraping arm in motorcycle accident

Guess what, guys?

None of these were planned.

Digital nomad insurance will put your mind at ease knowing you won’t go into lifelong debt tomorrow if the unexpected happens. Don’t become a digital nomad without it. Trust me. It’s worth it. Moving on.

Here are some important things to look for when comparing your different options:

#1.) What activities are covered? If you’re planning on doing any specific activities or have risky travel hobbies (renting a motorbike, climbing a mountain, scuba diving, etc.), make sure they are covered.

#2.) What are the coverage limits? Are they high enough to cover a big accident? The whole point of insurance is to cover you for the big things that would cause you financial disaster.

#3.) What is the deductible? Some plans allow you to choose this, others don’t. You’ll want to know how much you will have to pay out-of-pocket before your benefits kick in.

#4.) How often does the deductible reset? Some deductibles reset every year, others reset each time you extend or buy a new plan, and some even reset with every single claim. The longer it takes for the deductible to reset, the better.

#5.) How is billing handled? Is it easy to set up direct billing? What is the reimbursement process like? For this one, you’ll want to look at unbiased third-party reviews.

#6.) Where are you covered? Are you covered at any hospital, or do you have to use certain ones? Are some countries excluded? This is very important to know.

#7.) What happens when you extend? With some companies, extending can be expensive. Others make it super easy. If you don’t have a set end date, it’ll be helpful to have a flexible plan.

#8.) What is the process for extending? Some companies will extend automatically for you (which is super helpful), others require you to apply for an extension a certain amount of time in advance. The easier it is to extend, the better.

#9.) What are the rules about visiting home? Some companies are strict and will terminate your plan if you return to your home country before the end of your term. Others allow you to return home under certain circumstances, but they won’t cover you. One plan on this list gives you an allowance for days you can return home AND be covered (saving a lot of hassle).

#10.) What countries are you covered in? If you’re an expat, choosing your home country (or “country of residence”) can be confusing. If you’re not 100% sure what to choose, call to confirm. I failed to do this once and ended up traveling through the U.S. thinking I had coverage, but I did not.

Top 6 best digital nomad health insurance plans for long-term travel

Let me preface this list by saying that everyone’s situation is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer to what is the best digital nomad insurance.

That said, here are five of the best insurance plans for digital nomads, and more importantly, what type of traveler they are best for.

SafetyWing is a pretty obvious pick for most digital nomads (read on to see the exceptions). It is what I personally use whenever I am outside the U.S. (see my full Safetywing nomad insurance review ).

At $45.08 per 4 weeks, SafetyWing is by far the cheapest digital nomad health insurance on the list.

Don’t let the price fool you, though. SafetyWing has got your back !

To date, they have paid over $15,000 in hospital bills for me, including one surgery in Thailand, one surgery in Cambodia, two nights in (surprisingly luxurious) hospital rooms, and a few other random incidents.

Most of the time, they were able to work directly with the hospital and pre-approve the charges (so I didn’t have to submit all the claims paperwork and wait for reimbursement). This mostly depends on the hospital you visit though.

I will say that, while they have paid for all of my claims, sometimes I had to get after them a bit to speed up the process (i.e. call a bunch of times and ask what the hold-up was).

But that’s a small inconvenience when you factor in how cheap the plan is.

And the cherry on top?

They cover COVID-19.

SafetyWing also offers a more comprehensive health insurance plan called Remote Health Insurance, which is more expensive, but has added perks that may be worth it to you.

Cool things:

  • Cheapest policy offering the most bang for your buck (by far).
  • Even though SafetyWing is a new-ish company, coverage is underwritten by Tokio Marino — a huge well-established company.
  • Automatically extends your plan each month until you cancel (so you don’t have to try to estimate how long you’ll be gone in advance).
  • Deductible is per policy period (364 days max), not per claim. As long as you keep renewing, you’ll only have to meet that $250 deductible once per year.
  • Home country coverage (for every 90 days, you’re covered 30 days within your home country — or 15 days if your home country is the U.S.). This is an extra perk you don’t see with many other companies.
  • Can set up direct billing if you use their network (or go to a hospital with a good international department).
  • COVID-19 is covered.

Uncool things:

  • Does not cover theft of electronics.
  • Country of residence may be confusing for some people (like me) and may cause problems if you choose incorrectly.
  • Sometimes claims processing gets held up, so you’ll have to check back regularly (and possibly send some reminder emails) to keep the train moving.
  • Fewer adventure activities covered than some other plans on this list ( check here to make sure what you need is covered!).
  • Missed flights are not covered.

Nomad insurance (excluding U.S.): $45.08 per 4 weeks Nomad insurance (including U.S.): $83.44 per 4 weeks Remote health insurance: $206 per month

* Pricing increases for those over 39 years old.

How to sign up:

It’s super easy and takes just a couple minutes. Here’s the form to get started:

I used World Nomads for my first 2 years on the road (before switching to SafetyWing).

I made a few claims with World Nomads, including wound care after an accident riding scooters in Thailand . Oh, also that time when my left arm randomly swelled up like a purple balloon.

All of them were covered.

Unfortunately, I am not allowed to give specific details on the advantages, disadvantages, or my opinions of World Nomads, because their legal team does not allow it.

They also require me to add this disclaimer:

Just know that if you are planning to do some crazy adventure activities during your trip — and you’re struggling to find a travel insurance that will cover said activities — you can check to see if World Nomads “ Explorer Plan ” covers it.

The only reason I switched from World Nomads is because SafetyWing insurance came out guns ablazin’ as a super cheap alternative.

I wish I could share more opinions, but my hands are tied. You’ll have to check their website for more info.

  • See this page . I’m not allowed to give opinions.
  • Again, not allowed to give opinions. But let’s just say I switched to SafetyWing and it has saved me money, covers all the activities I personally need, and allows me to auto-extend if I don’t know my exact return date.

Depends on your home country, age, trip length, and type of plan (Standard or Explorer). For an instant quote, see this page .

Fill in your home country, destinations, age, and trip length. Choose a plan and payment method, and viola! You’re covered. Here’s the form to get your instant quote.

screenshot of passportcard nomads homepage

UPDATE: PassportCard seems to be in the process of changing its offerings and products, so prices and coverages are subject to change. Please investigate their site yourself for the latest information.

PassportCard Nomads is the new kid on the nomad insurance block, and they’re making a big splash.

One of the most annoying parts of travel insurance is having to pay out of pocket, then filling out tedious claims and waiting forever for reimbursement.

Most of the companies on this list offer an option to set up direct pay with hospitals, but this is often easier said than done. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t.

PassportCard Nomads is unique in that they actually send you a debit card that you can use for medical expenses.

You just open their app, request funds to pay, and they’ll load it onto your card.

  • No paperwork or reimbursement claims if you use their card.
  • No deductible on medical expenses.
  • Flexibility to add on extras (equipment coverage, extreme sports, etc.).
  • Different plan types for different levels of coverage.
  • Sign-up process can be more involved than quick-and-easy sites like SafetyWing.
  • Base price is competitive, but if you have any health conditions that require medication or you plan to travel to certain countries, the price skyrockets.
  • Minimum one-month coverage, so not ideal for short trips.

Starts at $59 per month if have no health issues, aren’t traveling to certain countries, and don’t need extra add-on coverage. Depending on your circumstances, your premium could jump by double or triple.

Things get a bit tricky for U.S. citizens who don’t reside in the U.S., but want to visit or travel within their country.

As I mentioned earlier, many travel insurance plans do not cover you in your country of citizenship (or only give you a limited number of days) — even if you purchase a special U.S. coverage waiver.

So, what options do you have?

Well, one option you have is to buy regular health insurance. But first, that’s stupidly expensive. And second, it can get tricky if you don’t have a permanent address.

A better option is to buy a travel insurance plan designed for U.S. expats visiting the U.S. — like the Patriot Plus America plan.

This is the plan I used while van-lifing around all the U.S. National Parks for six months ( side note: watch our crazy videos here !).

I’ve been to the doctor twice (thanks to that evil hand sanitizer bottle), and my plan has already paid for itself.

The best part is, I’ve never had to make any claims or wait for reimbursements. I just chose a doctor from their list (they have a huge network), went to my appointment, and never had to pull out my wallet. Score!

IMG also has some popular options for people traveling outside the US (or non-U.S. citizens traveling to the U.S.).

It’s important to note that these are health-only plans . They do not cover travel-related expenses like missed flights, canceled trips, lost luggage, etc. (although emergency medical evacuation is covered).

Unlike World Nomads and SafetyWing, IMG has more flexibility when building your plan. So you can increase or decrease your coverage based on your needs.

  • One deductible per 12 months.
  • Flexible plans.
  • Well-known company.
  • Extending your policy is easy (and not as expensive as True Traveller and the other travel insurance that I’m not allowed to compare).
  • Option for U.S. expats to get coverage in the U.S.
  • Covers COVID-19 (in countries with less than a Level 3 Travel Warning). See COVID-19 updates here .
  • Travel-related expenses not covered.
  • Extending your policy resets your pre-existing conditions.
  • If you have an overseas plan, your coverage will be canceled if you visit home for over 14 days in most countries (immediately in the U.S.) or if you return home for medical reasons.

Since you can build your plan based on your needs, pricing varies. But since it covers medical expenses only, it is cheaper than plans several plans that cover travel and equipment expenses.

True Traveller is a popular long-term travel insurance provider available to EEA residents only.

As I am not an EEA resident, I don’t have much experience with this insurance. But from what I’ve gleaned from their website and review sites, here’s the lowdown:

They offer a bunch of different plans designed for all different types of travelers (backpackers, gap year travel, multi-trip, one-way, already traveling, etc.)

Compared to SafetyWing, you have to spend more time upfront researching which plan is right for you. But in the end, you’ll have something more tailored to your needs (so you’re not paying for things you don’t care about).

Where True Traveller really shines is that they allow unlimited visits home. For digital nomads who visit family frequently or have a home base they regularly return to, this is something most other plans do not offer.

To be clear, you won’t be covered in your home country, but your plan won’t be canceled . That means that:

  • You don’t have to buy a bunch of expensive short-term plans.
  • Your pre-existing conditions won’t reset every time you want to visit home.

This is worth looking into if you’re eligible.

  • Several plans to better suit your unique needs.
  • Unlimited home visits.
  • Save money by pre-paying for a year (or more).
  • Covers COVID-19 (but only in countries on this list ).
  • Private medical treatment is only offered if public treatment is unavailable.
  • EEA residents only.
  • Expensive to extend if you underestimate the length of your trip.
  • Basic plan is cheap, but add-ons are expensive.
  • Will only consider direct billing for bills over £500.

As you’ll see when filling out a quote, the base plans are pretty economical. But if you start adding on extras, the price increases substantially. For this reason, it makes the most sense for those who don’t plan on doing any crazy adventure activities.

Fill in your details on the True Traveller website for an instant quote. Then choose any applicable upgrades to see how it affects the price.

Similar to IMG Global, SafetyWing’s Nomad Health plan is a health-only plan that doesn’t cover travel-related expenses.

Unlike IMG Global (and the rest of the travel insurance providers on this list), the Nomad Health plan offers comprehensive medical insurance. That means it’s for more than just emergency care. You can also use it for:

  • Routine health exams
  • Chronic conditions
  • Dental care
  • Mental care

It’s basically like your “normal” health insurance policy you had before becoming a digital nomad and traveling the world….except now you’re covered abroad.

This is a great option for digital nomads or expats who have made this their permanent lifestyle.

The emergency-only coverage you get with normal travel insurance policies is great for a while. And since it’s cheaper, you may want to stretch it out as long as possible.

But sooner or later you’re going to want to be able to go for a regular check-up, get a chronic condition treated, get those chompers cleaned, or be covered for serious stuff like cancer.

These reasons are why I decided to switch my insurance to Nomad Health, and I have already made several claims.

Side note: Nomad Health is a great option, but it’s not your only option. If you’re an expat who spends most of your time in the same country, you could see if it’s possible to get a local health insurance plan in that country. Depending on the country, you may be surprised how cheap they are.  If you spend all your time in cheap countries and are relatively healthy, you could just stick with the cheapest emergency-only plan possible (like SafetyWing’s normal travel insurance), and if you want to see a doctor for a non-emergency, simply pay out-of-pocket. If you don’t need many routine visits, this could be an affordable option.

  • No deductible.
  • Coverage in your home country as well.
  • Direct billing option available for bills over $250.
  • Different tiers depending on what you want covered.
  • Can get pre-existing conditions covered if they aren’t on the exclusions list.
  • Cheaper than other international health insurance plans, and much cheaper than holding normal health insurance back in the US (if you’re an American).
  • Outpatient coverage is a bit low (in my opinion) if you’re visiting the US, Singapore, or Hong Kong (everywhere else it’s better).

Since this is a more comprehensive medical plan than the rest of this list, it’s slightly more expensive. However, it’s certainly less than what you’d pay in the U.S. for health insurance.

Fill out your info on this page for pricing info.

Here are some tips I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) through my experience working with different travel insurance companies:

  • Scan receipts and medical histories on your phone (right when you get them!), and make notes on them explaining what they were for. On iPhone, it’s easy to scan and add notes with Apple Notes.
  • Save your insurance ID card, passport, visas, and any other important documents in MULTIPLE places (email yourself, Google Drive, Evernote, a special “Documents” photo album on your phone, printed hard copy, etc.)
  • Save your travel insurance’s emergency contact number to your phone contacts or keep it in your wallet.
  • If you’re in doubt about whether a certain activity is covered, call them and ask. Record the conversation, just in case.
  • Take a photo of your suitcase and everything packed in it. You can use this as proof when submitting a claim for reimbursement.
  • Try to get things pre-approved if possible to avoid lengthy reimbursement processes.
  • Always have multiple payment options with you (credit cards, debit cards, hidden emergency cash, etc.).
  • Save important medical info and emergency contacts in your phone as ICE (In Case of Emergency). Keeping a note in your wallet with this info is also wise.
  • Always tell someone where you’re going and ask them to check in with you later. If you don’t, you could disappear or be in critical condition and nobody would know about it.

Finally, before buying a plan, I highly recommend scanning through the terms and conditions to make sure everything is covered that YOU need covered.

It can be a little intimidating to sift through the fine print, but I made a video you can follow showing exactly how I vet travel insurance plans to make sure I never get screwed. I highly recommend giving it a watch:

Side note: Nomad Health is a great option, but it’s not your only option.

If you’re an expat who spends most of your time in the same country, you could see if it’s possible to get a local health insurance plan in that country. Depending on the country, you may be surprised how cheap they are.

If you spend all your time in cheap countries and are relatively healthy, you could just stick with the cheapest emergency-only plan possible (like SafetyWing’s normal travel insurance), and if you want to see a doctor for a non-emergency, simply pay out-of-pocket. If you don’t need many routine visits, this could be an affordable option.

You don’t need insurance unless your visa requires it. But it would be highly irresponsible to travel as a digital nomad without some sort of long-term travel insurance or other coverage. You are asking for trouble (speaking from an unfortunate amount of experience).

Cover yourself against anything that would send you into financial ruin. This would be emergency medical insurance at minimum. Digital nomads who want more peace of mind can also opt for insurance that covers travel expenses and lost or stolen belongings.

The best insurance for digital nomads depends on your priorities and circumstances. If you want the best value outside your home country, SafetyWing is the way to go. If you want your laptop and equipment covered, check out the insurance I’m not legally allowed to talk about (re-read article if you’re confused). If you want a convenient, pre-paid debit card to pay for expenses, consider PassportCard Nomads. If you want medical coverage only, look at IMG Global or Integra Global.

You should really buy travel insurance before you leave home. That said, most companies on this list allow you to purchase coverage even if you are already traveling. The sooner you get covered, the better.

Most travel insurance plans cover lost luggage, although some plans like IMG Global and Integra Global only cover medical expenses. If you lose your luggage, the reimbursement process is much easier if you have a photo of everything that was packed in your bags.

Some companies like SafetyWing cover you for a set amount of days in your home country in case you need to visit. Most travel insurance companies will not cover you in your home country, and others may even terminate your policy if you come home.

Depending on your situation, this can get confusing. Your best bet is to call the company directly and ask. If not, you may risk not being covered if you choose incorrectly (like I did). Sometimes you will use your country of citizenship, other times your country of residence.

Travel insurance usually covers travel-related expenses (lost luggage, trip delays, emergency evacuation, etc.) and medical emergencies. Unlike comprehensive health insurance plans, travel insurance does NOT cover routine check-ups, chronic conditions, and in many cases, pre-existing conditions and dental care.

Travel insurance coverage varies from plan to plan, but most cover acute medical care; trip interruption; trip cancellations and delays, emergency and medical evacuation; and lost, damaged, or stolen luggage. This is coverage is slightly different from international health insurance plans, which generally only cover medical expenses in a foreign country.

Travel insurance can be a waste of money if you buy it through any old company and fail to investigate the exclusions. That said, if you choose a reputable company and familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions, travel insurance may just be the wisest financial investment you make during your trip. Accidents happen all the time when traveling, and the last thing you want is to be stuck with a huge medical bill.

Mitch is your typical nomadic backpacker. Or at least, he was . But after stopping in Colombia to take “one week” of salsa lessons, his life took a sharp left turn. He met a cute Colombian girl in dance class, fell in love, and got married. Over half a decade has passed since he left his career to travel the world as a digital nomad, and he’s never looked back.

I'd love to talk. I am a digital nomad, US citizen, age 33, needing an annual or 6 month worldwide&domestic travel related insurance. Travel related insurance like trip delays and delayed luggage. I fly domestic and international, so I fly home sometimes between trips. I have a permanent address in the US, for mail, but I don't have a place that I rent. I travel worldwide, multiple trips, open-ended tickets, (no round trip tickets), I fly standby, kind of on an employee plan. I'm not concerned with medical insurance, because I'm healthy, and I have health insurance in the US. I just need my luggage covered. I'm running into annual policies that limit the amount of trips, like 10 per year, (Trawick International), I would like no limit, or policies that don't cover my domestic flights,(Safetywing), I need domestic coverage for my luggage and trip delays, I find that insurance cancels when I get back home, (WorldNomad), I find that companies don't cover open ended tickets, (Allianz), I find that they don't offer annual policy, (Travelex). Can you help me?

Hey Rose! Unfortunately insurance companies are pretty strict about who can give insurance advice, and since I'm not an insurance broker, I need to be careful with giving out recommendations. That said, if you're just looking for luggage coverage, you might want to check out different travel credit cards that offer it as a perk! Here is the one I use. :-) This one is a premium card with a bunch of other perks, but there are other more basic cards that cover luggage as well!

Nomad Health: The Best Health Insurance for Digital Nomads

A woman hiking on a sunny day in the rugged mountains

Travel insurance isn’t an exciting topic to research. When you’re planning a trip, the last thing you want to do is compare policies about theft and injuries that can occur abroad.

But, as I’ve said before , when an emergency strikes, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Whether you’re traveling for two weeks or two months, buying travel insurance is a must.

But what happens when you’re gone for two years, not just two months?

In that case, you need more than just emergency coverage. You need health care. You need coverage for routine and preventive check-ups and prescription drugs, as well as for broken limbs and lost luggage.

Enter Nomad Health .

Created by SafetyWing , Nomad Health is global health insurance coverage for remote workers, expats, and nomads.

It’s both emergency travel insurance and medical insurance while you’re away. It’s super affordable, making it a game changer for long-term travelers, digital nomads, and those living abroad.

Here’s everything you need to know about Nomad Health to decide if it’s right for you and your travel plans.

Table of Contents

What is Nomad Health?

How is nomad health different from regular safetywing coverage, who is nomad health for, how much is nomad health.

A screenshot from Nomad Health by SafetyWing insurance

It’s a replica of the kind of health insurance you might find in your home country, ensuring that you’re looked after no matter what happens.

Currently, there are two tiers: Standard and Premium. The main differences (as you can see in the image below) is that Premium offers greater coverage: dental up to $1,500 USD, vision up to $500 USD, vaccines up to $500 USD, and maternity costs up to $7,500 USD.

A screenshot from Nomad Health by SafetyWing insurance

You can learn more and compare the plans here .

A screenshot from Nomad Health by SafetyWing insurance

Nomad Health, however, covers both emergencies and regular medical care. That means you can get support — and get reimbursed — for emergency and non-emergency events.

There are a few other differences to note when comparing Nomad Health with SafetyWing’s standard travel insurance (called Nomad Insurance):

  • Nomad Heath covers those up to age 74 (vs. 69 for Nomad Insurance)
  • There is no deductible with Nomad Health (it’s $250 USD with Nomad Insurance)
  • Claims are handled in 10 days (instead of 45 with Nomad Insurance)
  • Coverage for one’s home country is included (that costs extra with Nomad Insurance)

Another important difference is that, unlike for regular travel insurance, Nomad Health applicants have to be approved. You can’t just buy a plan and be on your merry way, as the insurance team needs to review your application, along with any medical history and/or pre-existing conditions. They may also request additional medical notes or documents.

Additionally, pre-existing conditions may not be covered, and there are some applicants that may not be able to be covered. (Pre-existing conditions are rarely covered under regular travel insurance.)

I don’t love that some people are likely to be screened out, but I understand it given the cost of health care around the world. I suspect, since this was just rolled out, that as things progress and the pool of applicants increases and the company sees how this works, they will open it up to more and more people.

If you’re heading out on a trip for a few weeks or a few months, Nomad Health isn’t for you. Regular travel insurance (like SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance ) will more than suffice.

But if you’re going to be away for a year or more and want to make sure you have suitable health coverage for both accidents and routine care, then Nomad Health is for you.

In short, if you’re a digital nomad, expat, or long-term traveler, this is the plan I’d recommend for you. Here’s a look at what is covered:

A screenshot from Nomad Health by SafetyWing insurance

The most important number here is that $1,500,000 USD. Travelers using Nomad Health get $1.5 million in coverage each year, which is more than enough for pretty much anything. Most standard travel insurance plans cover just a couple hundred thousand dollars, so that $1.5 million casts a wide safety net and goes a long way to ensure you’re covered no matter what happens.

If you’re 18-39, a Standard Nomad Health plan costs around $123 USD per month. For a Premium Plan, that same traveler will pay $238 USD per month.

Prices go up per age group (just like with any insurance), so the highest monthly fee is for travelers aged 60-74, which costs $537 USD per month for the Standard Plan. Again, while that seems like a lot, it’s much cheaper than most other options out there — and much cheaper than paying out of pocket.

When I started backpacking, travel insurance options were limited. And expensive. Fortunately, we have a lot more options these days — with a lot better coverage. If I was starting out again, heading off on another 18-month trip around the world, Nomad Health is exactly the kind of plan I would get. It covers the basics as well as emergencies, and is also super affordable.

I know insurance seems like an unnecessary added cost, but I’ve learned the hard way — several times — that it’s an expense worth paying for.

Don’t be cheap with your health. Stay covered and stay safe. You won’t regret it.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

#1 - How much tech you have

When the cost of your Digital Nomad gear exceeds the maximum value covered by an insurance company, the rest isn’t covered.

Consider working out the total value of your tech to make sure it falls within the maximum value covered by a digital nomad insurance company. Most travel insurance plans only cover up to $2500, whereas World Nomads cover up to $3000.

#2 - What you'll be doing

Among the Travel Insurance Companies that do provide protection for injuries, the range of activities they cover vary considerably.

We’ve found World Nomads to have the widest range. You can find out the full scope of activities covered by a travel insurance company by looking on their website.

#3 - Where you're going

The Best Travel Insurance Companies offer Global coverage, but some are restricted or non applicable in certain countries.

#4 - Where you're from

Some Travel insurance companies only apply to citizens of certain countries, usually the same country as that of the travel insurance companies origins.

#5 - Your Budget

Is Genki Insurance for You?

#2 - world nomads, runner up for best travel insurance for digital nomads.

Why Digital Nomads Love this Travel Insurance –  In addition to covering office & admin work; World Nomads also have your back on over 150 other travel type activities like diving, motorbiking and trekking.

As well as covering high-value equipment, you can also list equipment separately; which means you can avoid paying to cover more gear than you have.

Praised by Lonely Planet, National Geographic and Rough Guides, World Nomads the most reputable travel companies today and their packages have been designed  specifically for short & long term travellers and adventurers.

World Nomads Pros

  • Flexible - You can buy more cover or claim online while still travelling
  • Cover up to $3000 worth of gear - $500 more than most travel insurance companies!
  • Cover Abroad Medical Expenses and Dental Work

World Nomads Cons

  • Age Limit of 70 for Certain Products
  • Don't offer Primary Health Insurance. Only cover Emergency Medical & Dental Treatment.
  • To get motorcycle and scooter accident coverage, you need an International Drivers License

Is World Nomads for You?

In our opinion as well as that of countless Bloggers, Adventures and Backpackers, World Nomads, without a doubt, is one of the best Travel Insurance Company for Digital Nomads, with nearly every major Travel Company pairing up with them.

That’s because of their all encompassing and flexible travel plans, their excellent customer service and the wide range of adventure activities they cover.

Anyone who is looking to get a travel insurance plan that covers the widest possible scope of adventure activities, whilst also covering a higher monetary value of tech than other insurance companies and great emergency medical coverage – should definitely choose World Nomads.

Unless you’re over 70, have way over $3000 in gear, require primary health care; or you need motorcycle / scooter coverage but can’t get an International Drivers license, you will be glad you chose these guys.

#3 - Safety Wing

Why Digital Nomads Love Safety Wing –  With an insanely easy to use platform and dedicated customer service, SafetyWing also provides Primary Health Care.

Most other Primary Health Insurance Companies only work in the country of a given home address, which is what makes Safety Wing so appealing for Digital Nomads who need global primary health care.

Combine this with an insanely easy to use platform, tech protection up to $2500 and travel insurance; and it’s easy to see why Safetywing are fast rising through the ranks of favourite travel insurance companies for Digital Nomads.

Safety Wing Pros

  • Provide Global Primary Health Insurance
  • Option to pay every 4 weeks and cancel at any time
  • Cover Trip Interruption and Delay

Safety Wing Cons

  • Do not Cover Adventure Sports or Trip Cancellations
  • Premium increases according to age for those over 39
  • Does not cover theft of any electronics!

Is SafetyWing for You?

Safety Wing market themselves as a travel medical insurance policy for Digital Nomads. As far as medical insurance for travellers go, they excel at this; being the only digital nomad friendly travel insurance firm that provides full primary health insurance.

Therefore, if primary health insurance is of your main concern, then Safetywing is the right choice for you.

Because Safetywing also cover up to $2500 worth of tech; this makes them a very attractive option for Digital Nomads.

However, it should be noted that electronic tech isn’t covered if it gets stolen. This, combined with other things like no coverage for trip cancellations or extreme sports, means that in all other regards SafetyWing are not as good as world Nomads from a travellers perspective.

In short, if your an adventurous traveller and/or full tech protection are your main priorities, you should opt out of SafetyWing and instead choose World Nomads. Only choose SafetyWing if primary health insurance is your number one priority.

#4 - True Traveller

Why Digital Nomads Love True Traveller –  For residents of EEA Countries and the UK, True Traveller offer the cheapest travel insurance out there.

The policy was designed for those who love adventure and don’t shy away from adventure actiites.

True Traveller Pros

  • Exceptional discounts if you pre-pay for a year or more.
  • No limit on home visits
  • Possible to purchase whilst on the road

True Traveller Cons

  • ONLY available to people in the UK and other EEA Countries
  • Do not cover private medical treatment
  • Extensions are very expensive

Is True Traveller Insurance for You?

Straight off the bat, if you’re not a member of the UK or a EEA country, definitely not as you won’t get covered.

Also, if you don’t know exactly how long you’ll be traveling for, best give these guys a miss, because they have the most ridiculously expensive extension fees.

But – if you have a fixed time length for which you’ll be travelling and live in a country eligible for Traveller Insurance, True Traveller could be a good third choice after World Nomads and SafetyWing.

They offer great prices, professional customer service and cover everything from medical expenses to electronic gear protection.

Why Digital Nomads Love IMG – IMG cover extreme activities that most other insurance companies would steer well clear of – like diving, helicopter rides and rock climbing.

It’s therefore no wander they are used by missionary groups, international diplomats and marines!

  • Tailored for extreme activities - even those that pose significant risk or injury or getting stranded
  • Compared to other providers, it's cheap to extend or renew your policy
  • Medical Coverage up to a whopping $500,000
  • Some clients complain of slow claims handling
  • They focus mainly on medial coverage. If you also want coverage for lost luggage, you must buy 2 separate packages
  • Can't return to home country for more than 14 days during trip or insurance policy gets cancelled.

Is IMG for You?

If you’re the sort of Digital Nomad who is also a truly hardcore adventurer, IMG might be for you. Check out their website for the epic list of insane activities they cover. Do note, this isn’t primary health insurance though.

That said; if you’re after travel insurance for an even slightly less insane trip, one where you’ll be frequently working and have lots of electronic tech – IMG is not the best bet! For this, we’d recommend World Nomads.

#6 - John Hancock Insurance Agency

Why Digital Nomads Love John Hancock  John Hancock are relatively straight forward to sign up with and offer a package for every budget.

However, we honestly can’t say many Digital Nomads love John Hancock – and neither did we! Read on for more details.

John Hancock Pros

  • Offer medical coverage and 24/7 global assistance
  • 3 Medical Coverage Packages available to suit all budgets
  • Easy to read contract with no confusing wording

John Hancock Cons

  • Get's terrible reviews from a variety of sources
  • Provides no coverage for adventurous activities or extreme sports
  • Very Poor customer service and experience

Is John Hancock for You?

If you were to. check out the reviews for John Hancock, you’d see a lot of travellers would tell you no.

At NomadsNation we do like to show you all the options available – if you’re willing to ignore other peoples and advice of avoiding this travel company, maybe your experience will be different. But from us; it’s a firm no. If you’re sensible: John Hancock is not for you.

#7 - Travelex

Why Digital Nomads Love Travelex –  Like World Nomads, Travelex are one of the rarer digital nomad insurance companies that include both medical and gear protection in their packages.

They come with some handy perks like children 17 and under being covered at no extra cost as well as trip interruption and delay benefits.

Travelex Pros

  • All of it's plans include equipment coverage
  • Highly customisable Travel Protection
  • Trip Cancellation for Business Reasons included

Travelex Cons

  • Website is not easy to use
  • Slow Response Time
  • Not all nationalities can make claims for damaged equipment

Is Travelex for You?

If the idea of being able to customise your travel insurance plan to suit your individual requirements and lifestyle habits seems attractive, you should consider checking out the full range of benefits of Travelex on their website.

Personally, we feel Travelex are similar to World Nomads and Safety Wing as they have many of the same perks, although these are normally just a tad weaker than the other two travel websites. For example Travelex allows you to insure up to $2500 of gear whereas with World Nomads it’s $3000.

Their unnecessarily complicated website and occasionally slow customer service do get frustrating.

#8 - Travel Guard

Why Digital Nomads Love Travel Guard  – Travel Guard are another travel insurance firm who have evolved with the modern digital era and realised that for many people medical coverage is not enough – therefore they also cover equipment.

They have 3 packages available, making them budget traveller friendly as well as meaning you don’t have to pay the same amount as someone taking far more gear than you.

Travel Guard Pros

  • Suit all budgets by offering 3 packages: silver, gold and platinum.
  • All Packages cover equipment in addition to emergency medical services
  • No per item limits

Travel Guard Cons

  • Only U.S. Citizens are Eligible.
  • Hard to Contact
  • Price of coverage varies according to age of traveller

Is Travel Guard for You?

If you’re a U.S. Citizen, aren’t well over the age of 40; and you want to go with a truly budget friendly travel insurance plan, Travel Guard could be for you.

For those who want to protect their tech, but don’t have loads of it –  say $700 worth or less, the silver package could be perfect for you!

But, travellers planning on taking part in adventure activities, for primary health insurance, who need to protect more tech and/or who are easily frustrated by an insurance company that is surprisingly hard to reach should look elsewhere.

Why Digital Nomads Love APA – APA cover a higher monetary value of gear than any other travel insurance company we know of – provided it’s gear for photography.

Their premium plan also expands beyond this with liability coverage and protection of some office gear.

  • Cover Owned and Rented Photo Equipment up to $21,000!
  • Reliable Customer Service
  • Plan 2 Covers office items and up to $2000 General Liability
  • Do not Cover Extreme Sports
  • Do not cover medical bills
  • Do not cover trip cancellation or delay

Is APA for You?

Simply put dear reader, if you’re a hardcore photographer with well over $3000 worth of photography gear, then APA is definitely your best best for protecting all that photography tech.

That said, you would need to look to another insurance company to also get medical coverage, travel insurance and coverage for sports and adventure activities which ups the price significantly.

Therefore, even if. you are a digital nomad of. the photographic variety, unless you have many thousands of dollars worth of tech, APA are totally unnecessary, with none of the other perks of Travel Insurance Companies like SafetyWing and World Nomads.

#10 - Insure My Equipment

Why Digital Nomads Love Insure My Equipment –  They are quite similar to APA, with abnormally high value tech coverage.

However, their tech coverage expands beyond just that used for photography and takes into account equipment used for a wide range of other professions (see below).

Insure My Equipment Pros

  • Covers equipment for photography, sound, lighting, generators, video recorders, editing and more.
  • Covers against theft, natural disaster damage and equipment in transit, falls, water damage, fire and more.
  • Covers incidents both in clients country of residence as well as abroad

Insure My Equipment Cons

  • Doesn't cover medical expenses
  • 60 day minimum policy
  • No Coverage for Adventure Actiiite

Is Insure My Equipment for You?

You should be cottoning on to how this works by now young Padawan. If you’re a techy professional – a photographer, camera worker, musician etc and you’re looking for high value coverage of your gear, well beyond the total value offered by other Travel Insurance companies then Insure My Equipment is a good choice.

You’ll still have to purchase medical insurance separately though, in addition to travel protection and adventure activities coverage.

Therefore if you only have a few thousand dollars worth of tech, do not go with these guys! It’ll be unnecessarily expensive with none of the other digital nomad friendly perks that you’d get with World Nomads or SafetyWing.

#11 - Protect Your Bubble

Why Digital Nomads Love Protect Your Bubble –  Based in the UK, Protect Your Bubble offer an exceptionally flexible system. It’s possible to protect 3 items of tech for just £14.99 a month!

They offer unlimited repairs, worldwide coverage and as well as covering theft and damage also cover mechanical breakdown.

Protect Your Bubble Pros

  • Choose exact items you want insured and receive quote based off that list
  • Offer coverage in country of residence and abroad
  • Extremely flexible and suitable for those travelling light

Protect Your Bubble Cons

  • ONLY offer insurance for residents of a few countries
  • Don't offer medical coverage
  • Some high end video equipment not covered

Is Protect Your Bubble for You?

If you’re travelling light and/or on a budget – a backpacker or a student perhaps, Protect Your Bubble could be ideal for you.

That’s because you can pay in monthly instalments by the item that you insure, meaning you can get away with a very low insurance fee overall, especially when you only want to insure one or two items.

However, Protect Your Bubble are strictly an equipment insurance service so you won’t be covered for the likes of medical bills or delayed travel expenses.

Buyers Guide - What do Digital Nomads need from a Travel Insurance Plan?

#1 - electronic tech coverage.

Chances are, as a Digital Nomad, you’ve got your own unique arsenal of electronic tech that you rely on.

It’s your electronic bow and arrow, the one you stalk through the pixelated woods with, in pursuit of online success. Without it – you go hungry.

That’s why it’s crucial to choose an insurance plan that covers your electronic gear.

But guess what?! Not all travel insurance plans do this! Dun – dun – dunnnn!

Now… strap yourselves in for this next bombshell: Among insurance plans for digital nomads that do cover gear – there’s still crucial differences!

Differences such as the circumstances under which electronic tech is covered – and the maximum value of gear you can be insured for.

So far, we’ve found World Nomads to offer the most extensive tech coverage at the greatest value.

We’ll talk about this a little more later in the Digital Nomad Insurance Reviews Section.

#2 - Travel Coverage

nomad travel medical insurance

By this, we mean insured covered for unexpected events such as Trip Cancellation or Interruption.

Imagine for example that your busy whizzing this way and that around the globe on your Digital Quest and you have to make a number of flights.

Say the transit between two flights is particularly tight and due to a delay, you miss your next stop!

You’ll want an insurance plan that reimburses you fully for this. If you’re making a lot of flights it can be cheaper to have this covered by your insurance plan rather than get extra protection for each flight.

It’s also handy to have all of your luggage protected in case it get’s lost in transit.

There’s also the need to be insured against unforeseen circumstances in the countries you’re visiting – such as environmental or political disasters.

Two particularly great Travel Insurance Companies for this which also suit Digital Nomads other requirements are World Nomads and SafetyWing.

We’ll talk more about both of these soon.

#3 - Travel Health Insurance

Backhome Backpackers

You definitely want to be covered for emergency medical expenses whilst abroad – as well as have protection for any injuries sustained.

The best Insurance Plans for Digital Nomads are those that take into account the crazy lives we have and provide coverage for activities such as trekking, tubing, ballooning, water-sports and other extreme sports.

Good travel health coverage means being covered for emergency medical treatment following unexpected illness and any injuries sustained throughout your travels.

It’s worth noting that primary health care (treatment beyond emergencies) isn’t covered by the vast majority of Travel Insurance Companies, with the exception of SafetyWing.

As a Digital Nomad, your primary concern should be getting covered for any major medical procedures you need following an accident or major illness sustained on your travels.

World Nomads and SafetyWing offer the best travel health insurance for digital nomads – with a few key differences between them.

We’ll cover that in the Reviews Section, coming up real soon!

Final Thoughts on Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads

Just before you go gallivanting off into the pixelated sunset and purchasing your digital nomad insurance policy, here’s several final tips for choosing the best package for you:

  • Read the Documents Provided – Here you’ll find a full list of all situations and contexts in which you’re covered and in which you’re not. Extremely handy to know. If there’s a type of coverage your’ interested in but can’t find it on the list, you may be able to purchase it as an additional item. But that’s not always the case.
  • Consider your Trip – Some locations are far safer than others. Having an idea of the overall risk of your trip is useful when considering what you do and don’t need coverage for.
  • Contact the Travel Insurance Companies Representatives Before Purchasing- To clarify with them any doubts or concerns you may have. This is also an excellent way of getting a feel for how knowledgeable and responsible the insurance company is. After-all if they can’t help you with a few queries, how can you count on them during an emergency!?

Le Regent Montmatre

And that’s all there be to it. As you can see, there’s a whole range of travel insurance options out there. Some are more tailored for Digital Nomads than others.

We still hold strong that the best two insurance firms for Digital Nomads are World Nomads and SafetyWing.

For Digital Nomads of the adventurous sort and with just that little bit more gear than the rest – World Nomads are by far the best option.

Digital Nomads who desperately want Primary Health Insurance and aren’t likely to partake in adventure activities, should opt for SafetyWing.

Ultimately though, the one who has to make the choice is you. Choose Wisely. Nomads Nation Out. (Roll Credits).

Cancellations, how long or short can i buy this insurance for, when is my insurance active.

  • By default your start date is set to the date you buy the insurance, and your insurance is activated the moment you receive your proof of insurance email after a purchase. If you buy our insurance with a start date in the future, your insurance is activated at 00:00 (12am) on that date in UTC timezone.
  • You have to leave your home country before the insurance can be activated. If the start date is on the day you leave or earlier, your coverage is active from the moment you cross the border and leave your home country.
  • There is limited coverage for a certain number of days for visits home. Read more under the section called "Medical coverage during visits to your home country". If you stay in your home country longer than the amount of days available for home country coverage, you will not have any coverage under this insurance until you leave your home country. Your coverage resumes when you leave your home country as long as you are still within your active insurance period.

World Nomads

World Nomads

Covers COVID?

Medical & evacuation limits per person, what you should know.

While many travel insurance companies exclude coverage for adventure activities, World Nomads designed its policy with the adventure traveler in mind. Individuals who engage in high-risk, international volunteer work may also benefit from this coverage. World Nomads covers more than 200 adventure activities, from skydiving to running with the bulls. It does not offer “cancel for any reason” coverage .

  • Covers hundreds of high-risk athletic and adventure activities.
  • Explorer Plan offers $500,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Offers $25,000 non-medical emergency evacuation coverage.
  • If you are not an adventure traveler, you can find cheaper rates elsewhere.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade not available.
  • No waiver for pre-existing conditions available.

World Nomads overview

World Nomads has been selling travel insurance since 2002. Nationwide underwrites all World Nomads travel insurance plans.

Athletes and adventurers may be interested in World Nomads travel insurance because of its generous coverage of potentially risky activities. International volunteers may also consider a World Nomads plan if they volunteer in disaster zones or do high-risk volunteer work like construction.

World Nomads offers two plans, each with different benefits, limits and sub-limits for coverage. Read our World Nomads travel insurance review to determine if one of these plans meets your needs.

World Nomads travel insurance plans

World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans: Standard Plan and Explorer Plan. Get an online quote to compare the plans before buying. You won’t be able to upgrade your plan mid-trip. That said, if you extend your trip while traveling, World Nomads will allow you to buy more coverage.

Both Standard and Explorer plans include emergency travel medical insurance coverage of up to $100,000 as well as trip cancellation insurance , trip delay and interruption insurance, baggage coverage and accidental death and dismemberment coverage. The plans also include a 24/7 emergency assistance number where a staff of multilingual assistants can connect you with medical treatment and transportation in the case of an emergency.

World Nomads Standard Plan

This budget-friendly plan covers everything you would expect from a travel insurance plan, but with lower coverage limits than the Explorer Plan. It also covers more than 200 adventurous activities, such as dog sledding, glacier walking, ice fishing, zip lining, bungee jumping, moped biking, tree climbing, sailboarding, triathlons, deep sea fishing and skateboarding. Covered activities may vary depending on your country of residence.

World Nomads Explorer Plan

The World Nomads Explorer plan covers everything in the Standard plan but increases the limits for many coverages and adds coverage for nearly 80 adventure activities. Additional covered activities under the Explorer Plan include backcountry snowboarding, heli-skiing, free diving, shark cage diving, skydiving, running of the bulls and rock climbing.

World Nomads Standard Plan vs. Explorer Plan

The Explorer Plan will cost you more, but it comes with higher coverage limits. Compare the two World Nomads travel insurance plans side by side.

World Nomads travel insurance covers

The main types of travel insurance packaged together in World Nomad policies include:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption. Trip cancellation insurance and trip interruption insurance reimburse you for prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses if you need to cancel your trip or cut it short because of a covered reason. Covered reasons typically include severe weather and illness, injury or death of you, your traveling companion or a close family member.
  • Emergency medical expenses and evacuation. Travel medical insurance and medical evacuation coverage help pay hospital bills and medevac expenses if you get sick or injured on your trip.
  • Travel delay. If your trip is delayed for six hours or more due to a reason listed in the policy, travel delay insurance can help cover the cost of accommodations, meals and local transportation while you are delayed.
  • Baggage. Baggage insurance includes lost or stolen baggage, excessive baggage damage and baggage that is delayed more than 12 hours, on your outgoing journey only.
  • Travel Assistance Services. Multilingual travel agents with Generali Global Assistance provide 24-hour assistance services for World Nomads. You can call for help locating a physician or to coordinate emergency medical transportation and care.

World Nomads also covers more than 200 adventure activities, many of which may be excluded by other travel insurance plans. A few activities covered by both World Nomads plans are:

  • Aerial safari.
  • Camel riding.
  • Cave tubing.
  • Dog sledding.
  • Kite surfing.
  • Snorkeling.
  • Spearfishing.
  • White water rafting.

World Nomads travel insurance doesn't cover

Like many travel insurance companies, World Nomads does not cover everything.

Common medical claims that are not covered by World Nomads travel insurance include:

  • Injury while intoxicated on drugs or alcohol.
  • Injury sustained while behaving in a reckless manner.
  • Certain pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Non-emergency treatments.
  • Routine medical exams.
  • Normal labor and childbirth.
  • Intentionally harming oneself.
  • Suicide or attempted suicide.

There are also a handful of adventure activities that are excluded from coverage, such as base jumping and mountaineering over 22,965 feet.

Read your policy carefully to understand any exclusions before traveling. If you’re not happy with your policy, you have 10 days to request a refund.

Filing a claim with World Nomads

You can file a travel insurance claim using World Nomads’ 24/7 online portal. To start a claim, log into your member account and follow the prompts. You will be asked questions relevant to your claim. Once you are done answering all the questions and uploading any relevant documents, click the declaration to finish the claim. You should then receive an email confirmation with your claim number.

It is a good idea to always have your policy number handy in case you need to file a claim or call the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team while traveling.

World Nomads travel insurance review FAQs

World Nomads does not cover pre-existing conditions and does not provide the option for a pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver, as some of the best travel insurance companies do.

No, World Nomads does not have “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) insurance . This optional upgrade, available with many travel insurance plans, allows you to pay extra for the right to cancel your trip for any reason at all. As long as you cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure, you’re typically entitled to a percentage of your nonrefundable trip expenses, generally 50% or 75%.

Adding CFAR to your plan typically increases the cost of your travel insurance by 50%. Comparing travel insurance plans can help you to find the best CFAR travel insurance .

Yes, World Nomads travel insurance covers personal electronic devices if they are stolen, lost or damaged on your trip. If all other sources of compensation are exhausted — such as filing a claim with your airline or your homeowners insurance — World Nomads may reimburse you for the depreciated value of your loss.

Keep in mind, however, that the per-article limit for World Nomads’ baggage and personal effects coverage is $500 under the Standard Plan and $1,500 with the Explorer Plan.

Good to know

soNomad reinvents travel insurance with a unique low-cost approach to help travelers save on their insurance. soNomad takes a minimum fee per transaction compared to traditional brokers who can take commissions up to 45%. We put an end to this nonsense with full transparency by revealing our fees to you.

Travel insurance provides financial protection in case of incurred medical expenses that may arise during a trip outside of your province or country of residence. Without proper travel insurance, you may find yourself responsible for the payment of the medical bills incurred in an emergency, while consulting a doctor, or if you are hospitalized. Even if you are covered by your provincial health insurance, the cost of medical expenses incurred outside of your province remains very limited.

Our travel insurance plans provide coverage for COVID-19 and all the variants at no extra cost. We have several plans to choose from based on your age, preexisting medical conditions and trip length at the most competitive price.

In the event of a medical emergency during your stay, you must contact emergency assistance listed on your travel insurance card before seeking care. A traveler who does not contact emergency assistance prior to receiving treatment may have his coverage reduced or limited. In the event that you cannot contact emergency assistance prior to receiving treatments, you can ask someone to call for you, or call as soon as it is possible.

Yes, our exclusive product plans provide coverage for pre-existing medical conditions , as long as you meet the eligibility and stability requirements. Our easy to use state of the art medical declaration tool was developed to simplify the underwriting process and guarantee coverage for your preexisting medical conditions.

Your provincial health insurance plan covers a very limited portion of your medical costs while you are abroad. Each public insurance plan reimburses hospital services following a sudden illness or an accident according to pre-determined amounts. These amounts do not take into consideration the reality of the expenses of health care in the country visited.

A Digital Nomad Guide to Moscow

Moscow is located on the banks of the Moskva River, in the Central Federal District of European Russia. It is the country’s capital, the northernmost megacity on Earth, and the most populous city in Russia and Europe. It is an important political, economic, cultural and scientific center.

In the course of its history, the city has been the capital of a succession of states, from the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the Middle Ages to the Russian Zarato and the Soviet Union, except for the period of the Russian Empire. In Moscow you will find the Moscow Kremlin, an old fortress where today the office of the President of Russia is located. The Kremlin is also one of several World Heritage sites in the city.

Moscow has a lot to offer expats: a variety of international schools, well-attended private health centers, international companies, restaurants of all kinds, a hectic nightlife and a transport network that includes three international airports, nine railway stations and one of the deepest subway systems in the world that is second only to Tokyo in number of people. However, Moscow is also the most expensive city in Russia, and this is especially reflected in the costs of accommodation and school fees.

The cultural offer is incomparable and you can choose between classical ballet, contemporary art, exploring part of the history of the city, live music of all kinds and crazy parties. Of course, you should consider that in winter temperatures are below zero and summers are short.

Moscow is undoubtedly a curious city where you can discover a new culture and a different way of life.

I think Moscow is an interesting place to live. However, as with other cities, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages, or rather the things that I like about this beautiful city, are the architecture, the culture, the parks, the cafes, the museums, its public transport system in which you rarely have to wait more than a minute for the train, the stained glass and marble of the beautiful Soviet subway stations, the intricate debates in the bars, the conversations on topics that in other parts of the world seem obsolete like freedom, the twisted and intelligent Russian sense of humor, the fact that you should always carry flowers or a gift to birthday parties, the creative sarcasm they have and their people. I can’t say that the inhabitants of Moscow are particularly friendly but there was always someone to help me when I needed it and company to share the good times.

The downsides of Moscow for me are its cold winter weather, the traffic, the pollution, the booming city prices, the casual misogyny, the lack of diversity in terms of beliefs and races, the lack of confidence that institutions inspire, the dictatorship of technicality where paperwork overwhelms you, and the rudeness in interactions. Also, that there is nothing planned that makes your life a bit difficult if you are a person who likes to have everything planned two weeks in advance. The good thing about it is that it makes you a more spontaneous person and leads you to live more in the present moment.

Regarding food, many dishes combine things that do not seem to fit at all but finally surprise you; a bit like Moscow’s people.

I think Moscow has a hard side that hits you but at the same time that is what teaches you to enjoy more the incredible moments that it gives you as well. It is a mixture that does not leave you indifferent.

Of all the streets and avenues to see in Moscow, Tverskaya Street, more commonly known as Gorky Street, is impressive and seems endless. Another recommended avenue to walk through is the 6-lane Novy Arbat or New Arbat Avenue, which leads to the Novoarbatsky Bridge over the Moskva River. Also, Kutuzovsky Prospekt Aenue, where you can see the Arch of Triumph.

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is the most important in the city and claims to be the tallest Orthodox temple in the world. It is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow and of all the Russias. Its architecture is inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. It took 44 years to build the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The white marble facade, the golden domes, the iconostasis and the choirs inside provide a striking image.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro, which opened in 1935, is reputed to be one of the most impressive in the world. The Soviets wanted to make it the most famous subway, full of luxury and glitz. It features marble walls, mosaics, frescoes, sculptures, and the Soviet hammer and sickle symbol at practically every corner. The two most recommended stations are Komsomólskaya and Mayakóvskaya.

The Central Park of Culture and Leisure Gorky

The Central Park of Culture and Leisure Gorky, more commonly known as Gorky Park, is a very central park with gardens and green spaces, monuments and the Muzeon, with more than 1.000 Soviet sculptures. It is one of the ideal places to walk and enjoy nature within Moscow.

Another recommended park is the Kolomenskoye Park covered with hills, Orthodox churches and huge green esplanades. Nearby is also the Novodevichi Cemetery, where many famous Russian figures are buried.

Most of the stores are open on Sunday. This market is part of the Izmailovo Kremlin and has other places of interest very close by, such as the Vodka Museum, the Church of St. Nicholas, the Tsar’s Palace or the Bread Museum.

In the Moscow International Business Center

In the Moscow International Business Center (CINM), you will find the most modern skyscrapers in the country. Here you will see the Federation Tower (Bashnya Federatsiya), the OKO towers and the Evolution Tower with their twisted design.

Additionally, it is worth visiting the group of Russian Orthodox churches 70 kilometers from the city in Serguiev Posad. This religious complex is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is considered “The Russian Vatican”. Among the most striking buildings are the Cathedral of the Assumption with its blue domes, the Bell Tower of Serguiev Posad and the Church of St. Sergius.

Moscow has a humid continental climate with long, cold winters and mild, short summers. Cloudy days are frequent throughout the year, so in winter the average hours of sunshine rarely exceed 15 minutes a day.

Snow can remain on the streets of the city for half a year, from the end of October to the beginning of April. In winter the average is -12 °C, however, occasionally cold waves occur that can drop the temperature to -40 °C. Spring is very cold for the first three weeks, but it tends to soften in the months of April and May. In summer, temperatures rise in very isolated cases up to 39 °C, although they usually oscillate between 10 ° C and 30 °C. Autumn is a time of transition from hot weather to cold weather with heavy snowfall starting in late October.

On average, the warmest months are July and August. January is the coldest month of the year. The rainiest months are May, June and July. The best months for good weather in Moscow are May, June, July, August and September.

In Moscow you will find practically everything your children need. However, one of the first drawbacks you will have is enrolling them into a school. Education in public schools is free and open to all children who live in the city but classes are given in Russian. The advantage they have is that you find one in almost every neighborhood.

Private schools are not that common in the country. However, Moscow has a wide selection of international schools. Most expats living in the city enroll their children in one of the city’s international schools. It is advisable to contact the school as soon as possible as they do not have long waiting lists. You will be able to choose between a foreign national curriculum, the Russian national curriculum or the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. For younger children, many have nurseries.

Consider that depending on the school and grade, annual tuition fees start at around 5.800 USD. Furthermore, you will have additional costs such as the entrance fee and school transportation.

Additionally, many embassies in Moscow organize mother-tongue schooling on their own premises for the children of embassy employees. Children of other expatriates from the respective countries can also be admitted.

Some of the international schools in Moscow are: Moscow Anglo-American School, Moscow British International School Association, International English School, Moscow International School, Deutsche Schule Moskau, Swedish Moscow School, Japanese School, Lycée Français de Moscou Alexandre Dumas, Atlantic International School, CIS Russia International School.

The city also has the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO-University) which is a prestigious institution of higher education run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offering comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in English, French and German.

Moscow Overall Budget: $2700 per Month

According to the 2017 Forbes List, Moscow is second only to New York and Hong Kong when it comes to the number of resident billionaires. You don’t have to be a billionaire to be able to afford to live in Moscow, but it certainly isn’t cheap.

In the past, Moscow regularly featured in the top five most expensive cities in the world for expats, for example, in Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey. However, it became more affordable when the Russian ruble lost its value against the US dollar in 2013. Housing, education and medical costs make up the largest part of the budget.

Rental prices in Moscow are usually listed with measurements in square meters and a monthly cost in rubles or US dollars. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs around 1.000 USD a month. For a three-bedroom apartment in good condition, you can expect to pay between 1.500 and 4.000 USD. What causes the price to fluctuate is the location, in what condition the apartment is and what amenities it has. However, there is room for negotiation with rental prices in some cases, for example through Russian utilities or negotiating furniture and redecoration. Also, expect to pay around 120 USD for basic utilities per month for a small apartment.

Regarding transportation, a 30-day metro pass with unlimited rides costs only around 35 USD, one trip ticket on a marshrutkas cost around 0,80 USD and the taxi rate per kilometer goes around 0,21 USD.

Three- course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant can cost as cheap as 40 USD but a meal in a cheap street restaurant for one person cost about 10 USD. If you prefer to eat at home, a liter of milk cost 0,95 USD, 12 eggs 1,40 USD, 1 kilo of chicken fillets 4,20 USD, 1 kilo of tomato 2,70 USD and a bottle of mid-range wine around 8 USD.

The Russian Healthcare System: A Quick Overview

Russia offers treatment options at different levels of government and region. Here’s a breakdown of how you can access medical treatment in Russia:

  • At the municipal level are Health Posts that offer basic out-patient care for non-emergency situations, for example, vaccinations and routine check-ups.
  • Also generally at the municipal level are Health Centers that are specialized for maternity care and also offer routine surgery.
  • At the regional level are Urban Polyclinics which offer a wider array of services including follow-up care for complex conditions. Some of the larger polyclinics will have in-house specialists, for example, oncologists and cardiologists.
  • Almost exclusively in large cities are Specialized Medical Hospitals which offer the full range of medical services and are also open 24 hours.

This last point about the 24-hour opening is quite important, as many healthcare facilities in Russia operate during normal business hours or are closed at night. Needing immediate medical care ‘off-hours’ can prove challenging or expensive. Many private facilities also observe closing hours or charge high premiums for after-hour care.

Read:  Understanding Russia’s Healthcare System

Is Healthcare in Russia Free?

Like so many countries, Russia’s healthcare system is based around insurance. And like many European countries, Russia offers its citizens what is meant to be universal healthcare. But in order to gain access to free public healthcare, Russian residents are required to pay in through their employment. The Russian Federation has guaranteed all of its citizens’ free healthcare since ratifying its Constitution in 1996. But in actuality, many people in the population are not covered. In some rural areas, the majority of people have no coverage or access to quality healthcare.

Russia’s Hospital System

How is russia’s public hospital and healthcare system.

Just as there are areas of the country where the population does not have access to quality healthcare, so is it within the public sector. And overall Western visitors are likely to find the Russian healthcare system, especially the public one, not up to standards. Challenges faced within the public hospital system, particularly for foreigners, include food shortages, a lack of English speakers, extremely long wait times, underfunding, basic equipment and facilities, or even a lack of equipment altogether. So if the question is, ‘Are hospitals in Russia good?’ for the average Western expat, if they are discussing the public hospital system, the answer is most likely going to be no.

Russia’s Private Hospitals

The popular choice for expats and visitors to Russia are private hospitals. These often offer English-speaking doctors and staff. The medical treatment available at some of Russia’s private hospitals is very much up to international standards. These hospitals can often be quite expensive. Treatment in Russia’s private hospitals can be costly by the standards of Western medicine. That is why it is so important to have the right insurance that will offer you coverage. Another important point about the private hospital system is that clinics and hospitals are the only options within the private system. There are not private surgeries or practices that offer complex procedures. Rather, doctors, even though is a private system, must operate within an accredited hospital or clinic.

Before traveling to Russia, it is vital to have quality health insurance.

What You Need to Know About Accessing Russia’s Hospital System as an Expat

Once again, access is based on whether this is the public or private system. Those using the public hospital system will either have to show proof of coverage through employment or pay upfront. For those with state-sponsored insurance, there will be no costs. However, it is necessary to show proof of insurance from the start to avoid admitting fees. Public hospitals will treat emergency situations but then bill afterward, as well as for any follow-up treatment, both in-patient or outpatient. For this and all non-emergency services, payment is always expected upfront.

Those accessing the private hospital system should expect to pay upfront. Even with private insurance, many private facilities expect to be paid upfront. In order to avoid this, it is vital to choose both private insurance as well as a hospital that already has an arrangement with the insurance company to bill directly.

How Many Hospitals Are in Russia?

Russia is a country with many hospitals. In just Moscow, there are well over 100 hundred hospitals. As of 2018, there were 5.3 thousand hospitals in Russia. The numbers from 2010 until 2018 show a marked decrease during that timeframe. There was a total net loss of 1,000 hospitals in less than a decade.

If you’re a student who’s planning to travel internationally or study abroad, it’s a good idea to go prepared with comprehensive student travel insurance. But where do you find plans tailored to your unique needs?

These companies offer some of the best options for travel insurance for students, whether you’re globe-trotting for a week, a semester or a whole year.

Student travel insurance can vary from plan to plan. But there are a few things you should look for whether you’re an exchange student, studying abroad or simply planning an international trip between classes.

Trip cancellation insurance : This coverage reimburses you for any prepaid, nonrefundable costs of your trip should you have to cancel for any unexpected circumstances covered by your selected policy.

Travel medical coverage : If you become ill or get injured while traveling, travel medical coverage can help pay for medical expenses and even emergency travel back home.

Travel delay insurance : In the event of rescheduled or canceled flights that result in painfully long layovers, this coverage will reimburse you for personal items, food and lodging you may have to pay for as you wait for a rescheduled flight.

Delayed baggage : Just as it sounds, this coverage reimburses you for luggage (including necessities you might have to purchase while you wait for your luggage to arrive) if it’s delayed or lost by a travel provider in transit.

As with travel insurance for more general travelers, there are several factors that affect the cost of travel insurance for study abroad students and other young travelers, including:

Traveler age.

Overall trip cost.

Trip duration.

Specific coverage selected.

Because there are so many factors involved, and because every travel insurance company is different, it’s often wise to compare a number of plans to decide which is best for you and your travel plans. That said, these are some of the best student travel insurance options.

There are several options available from Travel Guard for travel insurance for students studying abroad or simply exploring on break: Deluxe, Preferred and Essential.

They all include trip cancellation and interruption, medical coverage, and lost or delayed baggage insurance. Bonus: They even come with dental coverage. Add-ons like car rental coverage and “cancel for any reason coverage” are also available with some plans.

There is also an annual plan available, but coverage automatically expires if any single trip lasts longer than 90 days, so it wouldn’t likely be sufficient for more than a semester abroad.

Multiple price points for a wide range of coverage options.

Dental coverage included.

24/7 emergency assistance available with all plans.

If you plan on participating in adventure sports, the Adventure Sports Bundle is only available as an add-on on some Preferred and Deluxe plans.

What Allianz covers

A well-known travel insurance company, Allianz offers a number of travel insurance plans that may appeal to students.

All plans include epidemic coverage, trip cancellation and interruption, medical and dental coverage, baggage loss and delay, and 24-hour assistance. And premium plans tend to offer similar coverage as other insurance companies but at a lower price.

There’s also an annual plan available called AllTrips, but it doesn’t cover individual trips longer than 45 consecutive days.

Includes epidemic coverage (including for COVID-19).

Covers 100% of prepaid costs if you cancel your trip for a covered reason.

  • Flexible deductible options.
  • Wide ranging medical coverage.
  • Low prices for medical only needs.
  • Lacks in traditional travel insurance coverage options such as trip Interruption, bag delays, etc.
  • Better when paired with travel credit card insurance coverage.

What GeoBlue covers

Designed for students staying in one place for more than a week or even a whole semester, GeoBlue’s Navigator for Students plan is perfect for students studying abroad who are more concerned with health care coverage than travel-related benefits.

It’s designed more like traditional health insurance with deductibles, monthly payment plans and unlimited annual maximums when it comes to medical care. It covers medical care inside and outside the U.S., making it a good overall health insurance if you plan to travel back and forth. Travel vaccinations, emergency medical transportation and repatriation are even covered.

What’s not covered are more typical travel-related expenses like lost baggage, delayed flights and trip cancellation. But the medical coverage is so comprehensive that if you want travel-specific coverage, you could opt to purchase a more budget-friendly plan for each specific trip.

Unlimited annual maximum for medical benefits.

Sliding payment scale to customize your deductible-to-monthly premium payments.

Preventive care is covered.

Dental and vision benefits are extra.

Coverage for most travel-related snafus isn’t included.

The best travel insurance for students studying abroad or traveling between semesters or even on holiday breaks is insurance that’s best suited to you and your travel plans.

Before you hit “Add to cart,” compare several plans, make sure to read the fine print and understand what’s covered (and, just as importantly, what’s not ). Select a plan that offers the coverage required to help you feel safe, secure and protected wherever you roam.
