Wish to know about India's best secrets and hidden gems? Explore 'Mera Shandar Bharat, Safar Anokhey India Ka' to plan your next holiday!

The summers are here and the mercury is soaring. A perfect time to spend your days near water bodies to neat the heat. These are the times when Maldives, Andamans, Bali and Goa would be on everyone's wish list. But with the COVID scenario not allowing much degrees of freedom to explore the far of lands, here's a perfect week long road trip itinerary from Mumbai that will get you up close and personal with the gorgeous and lesser known beaches along the coastal belt of Maharashtra.

Day 1 - Mumbai to Awas

As you start off your journey down south from Mumbai, the first beach you will come across will be Awas beach. Just 30 minutes away from Mandwa Jetty in Alibaug, Awas beach is the perfect place for you to lazily sit beneath the towering whistling pine trees as you gorge on the vast and expansive beach area while the sun sets over the horizon.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 1/8 by Mastane Musafir

Not yet surrendered to commercialization, Awas Beach, in our opinion is the best beach on the Alibaug-Murud belt. If a peaceful period of time is what you seek, then Awas beach will definitely not disappoint you.

Day 2 - Awas to Harihareshwar

Breezing past through coastal route, overlooking gorgeous sea forts, castles and lighthouses along the Raigad coast, you will reach a beach where you are about to have an unparalleled experience.

A 2.5 km long untouched black sand beach bed is the place where you are ought to have the most peaceful time in the company of the ocean. Major attraction at here is the Kal Bhairav temple, that draws numerous tourists here. But even if you are not spiritual, there is something for you at the place.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 3/8 by Mastane Musafir

Right behind the temple, along the route of the 'Parikrama' (circulation route around the temple) is a cliff side that opens up into the Arabian sea. A small trek down the cliff and there are some gorgeous rock formations on the walls of the cliff. Totally photogenic and Instagram worthy!

A ferry ride across lies Velas beach, that is well known for the nesting site of Olive Ridley Turtles. Watching these little creatures hatch and make way to the ocean is a phenomenon worth witnessing.

Day 3 - Harihareshwar to Ladghar

Sitting quietly on the coast of Dapoli, is this beach with azure-blue waters that will for sure give you peace to your strained eyes. The beach area is pretty vast and frequented by a few people.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 4/8 by Mastane Musafir

Being a sandy beach, you can indulge in the water sports activities. But our recommendation is to opt for the Dolphin Boat Ride, one of the best places to spot the beautiful dolphins, from a pretty close range.

Day 4 - Ladghar to Guhagar

One of Konkan's most famous beaches, Guhagar is the place for everyone who want to have a lovely time near the sea. On the way to Guhagar, a pit stop at Anjanwel Lighthouse will totally stun you with panoramic views of the sea.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 5/8 by Mastane Musafir

A little further from Guhagar, you will come across Velneshwar beach. A rock-free beach with soft sands and lined with coconut trees is perfect to stroll, swim or sun bathe. Best part of travelling on a coastal belt is every few kilometers you will come across a beautiful beach!

Day 5 - Guhagar to Ganpatipule

Well, Ganpatipule requires no introduction. It is one of the most popular beaches of Maharashtra. Silky white sand and cool surroundings are for sure to relieve the stress you have ensured en route the bumpy road.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 6/8 by Mastane Musafir

The road that runs parallel to the ocean offers some of the most lovely views and classic vantage points for those awesome pictures. The stretch of 10-12 km between Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri is one of our favorites, because the views are just awesome. Best enjoyed with a cup of tea from the roadside stalls while sitting up on the cliff watching the waves crash at the base.

Day 6 - Ganpatipule to Ganeshgule

It has been 2 years since we first visited this virgin beach, but the memories of the place are fresh in our hearts. Totally off the route, this gem of a beach is a testimony of serenity and beauty. Not known to many, it is a perfect hideaway if you are seeking solace and calmness.

Crystal clear water with turquoise blue shades, scintillating golden sands and a beach area that is completely for yourself, there is nothing more that you can ask for from a place.

A small cliff at the far end gives mindboggling views of the ocean and beach, and we saw one of the best sunrises of our lives. It totally enchants you with your beauty. To know more about Ganeshgule, click here.

Day 7 - Ganeshgule to Tarkarli

Just a few kilometers away from Malvan, Tarkarli is one of the places on west coast of India that showcases rich underwater life. A pristine white sand beach and a crystal clear water body is perfect for all water babies.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 8/8 by Mastane Musafir

The ocean bed is laced with some beautiful coral reefs and beautiful fishes which you can witness by indulging in scuba diving or snorkeling. The vibe of the place increases manifold by its tranquil and calm atmosphere. And add to this, one of the most delicious cuisines on earth, the Malvani cuisine which is totally delectable and finger licking good.

To wrap up, all we've got to say is, while you may be enticed by the charm of Andamans or Maldives or Goa, the Konkan belt of Maharashtra, which is still not gripped by commercialization, has rich cultural and natural diversity on offer. The region is unadulterated & untapped and has some of the most gorgeous hidden gems. We can't wait to explore these gorgeous places again!

Mumbai to  Malshej Ghat

road trips from Mumbai

Taking the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and driving through the Sahyadri range that runs along the Konkan Coast , brings you to the mountain pass of Malshej Ghat. Come August, moderate showers make the sylvan valley abundant of wildlife and waterfalls, and all the more alluring. Spend the weekend visiting the eponymous falls, climbing up to the sixth-century Harishchandragad Fort, trekking to Darkoda Peak, or simply trying to identify the varied bird calls.

Duration: 3 hours (127 km) Best time to visit: July to September Where to stay: Saj By The Lake Where to eat: Maati Bani at Saj By The Lake serves local favourites. Things to remember:  While driving to Malshej Ghat amid rains will offer you great views of the misty valleys and gurgling streams, be cautious while driving as the roads turn super slimy during this time of the year and the mountainous area is prone to accidents.

Keep driving further on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway towards the Mulshi-Paud Road, and you’ll have yourself a weekend of serenity and quiet. Deep forests sway with the cold wind, a swollen River Mula welcomes you, and a picturesque beauty holds your fancy wherever you turn—Mulshi is a true sight during monsoons. Mumbai to  Wai

Wai

Next time you dream of a road trip from Mumbai that takes you straight to strawberry farms, skip Panchgani and pick its quaint neighbourhood, Wai. Even if the picturesque banks of River Krishna and lush greenery around don’t lure you in, ancient temples and intriguing Maratha architecture here surely will. Wai has played backdrops to many Bollywood flicks including  Omkara  and  Bajirao Mastani , thanks to the cloudy skies and light pleasant showers that always keep it company.

Duration: 4 hours 20 minutes (241 km) Best time to visit:  September to April Where to stay:  Ravine Hotel Where to eat:  Rustom’s Strawberry Inn near Panchgani is known for its homemade Parsi food. Things to remember:  Wai isn’t big on fancy resorts but fret not. Panchgani, with a wide range of accommodation options, is just a stone’s throw away. Also, Kaas Pathar or the Valley of Flowers of Maharashtra is just an hour away.

Mumbai to Tarkarli

If you have had enough of Goa but still want to have some beach fun, Tarkarli is waiting for you. While the long drive seems to be a vacation in itself, the Ganpatipule-Ratnagiri region is no less than a paradise to beach-bums. And Tarkarli is one coastal adventure not to be missed. Arrive here to go under deep waters and swim with sea creatures amid corals. Bask on the Malvan Beach. Visit the 17th-century Sindhudurg Fort for a dose of history. And later, wrap your day by watching the sky turn a fiery orange during sunset.

Duration: 10 hours 45 minutes (545 km) Best time to visit:  October to March Where to stay:  Vivasa Resort Where to eat:  The in-house restaurant at the Blue Sea Beach Resort offers delectable Konkan dishes as you soak in the view of the Arabian Sea. MUMBAI GOA ROAD TRIP – THE COASTAL ROUTE

' src=

Road trips are fun to explore new places. India encompasses numerous spots across different parts throughout the country. So, it doesn’t matter which part of the country one lives in, there is always an option of planning a road trip in India.

We did a 10 days motorcycle road trip from Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai via the Coastal Route traversing through scenic seaside villages with endless stretches overlooking the sea. Ride on the sea with your vehicle loaded on a ferry and feel the sea breeze showering you with salted kisses. The coastal route is worth an experience.

This route is less explored as it takes much more time than the other two popular routes of Mumbai Goa Highway (NH66) and Mumbai-Pune-Bangalore Highway (NH4). If you are a traveller and like to roam the roads just like us, this route is for you.

In this article, we will guide you through the coastal route and share our experiences which can help you plan this beautiful road trip.

Table of Contents

DAY 1 – MUMBAI TO HARIHARESHWAR

Route – Mumbai~Kashid~Murud Janjira~Agardanda~Dighi~Harihareshwar (222 kms)

Ferry Point – Agardanda to Dighi Port. (From 8 am every one hour till 9:30 pm)

Our stay on day 1 was at Harihareshwar. You can also plan to finish your day at Shrivardhan which is around 20 kms before Harihareshwar.

Once you hit NH66, just before Karnala there are many breakfast options. We ate at Joshi Wadewale serving authentic Maharashtrian breakfast. Puneri misal is a must try.

Move ahead to Alibaug via Vadkhal junction on NH66. The coastal route begins from here. Skip the halt at Alibag as it can be easily explored any other day from Mumbai. Around 30 kms from Alibag and on the way towards Murud Janjira is Kashid Beach . There are lots of shacks with hammocks offering snacks, cold drinks, and coconut water. You can relax here for some time.

If you are looking for a more secluded beach, then skip Kashid and ride 15 minutes further to Nandgaon Beach . A peaceful and silent place with clean water. Good place to relax in shade of the coconut trees. There are not many eateries here.

We took our first ferry at 1:15pm from Agardanda jetty. It drops at Dighi Port situated on the bank of Rajpuri creek in 15 minutes. From here, Harihareshwar is 48 kms. Road from Dighi is under construction but still a manageable ride.

Sadguru Krupa Khanaval (7350380167) on Dighi road serves homemade meals at a reasonable price. We tried veg & non veg thali. Food was simple and tasty.

Harihareshwar Beach is a stretch of calm and serene waters with unpolluted cool breeze wafting along the sea-shore. After a long ride, this is a perfect place to spend the evening. Visit the 16th century historic Harihareshwar Temple located on the coast. It offers a great combination of natural beauty with spiritual enhancement.

DAY 2 – HARIHARESHWAR to GANPATIPULE

Route – Harihareshwar~Bagmandla~Vesvi~Harnai~Ladghar~Dabhol~Dhopave~Guhagar~Tavsal~ Jaigad~Ganpatipule (164 kms)

Ferry Point-

  • Bagmandla to Vesvi (From 7:30 am every 1 hour)
  • Dabhol to Dhopave (From 6:45 am every 45 min)
  • Tavsal to Jaigad (From 6:40 am every 1 hour)

Day 2 is all about ferry crossing. There are 3 ferries to cross. We took the first ferry at 10:30 am. We were late as we spent the morning doing photography at Harihareshwar.

After a 30 minutes ride, you reach Bagmandla Jetty . The ferry crosses the river Savitri and drops you to another side called Vesvi in 5-10 minutes. It saves you almost 30-40 kms of ride.

Once you reach Vesvi, you need to head towards Dabhol Jetty via Kelshi~Harnai~Murud~route. This is a wonderful stretch of internal village roads. There are many places where you would like to stop and take your time to admire the views and take photographs. Of course you should, as you are roaming the roads to enjoy the journey, aren’t you?

We took our 2nd ferry from Dabhol at 3:45 pm which dropped us at Dhopave in 10 minutes. From here, your next destination is Tavsal Jetty which is 50 kms away. And then, 22 kilometers more and you reach Ganpatipule.

We would like to share a small experience here. It was already 4:30 pm when we left for Tavsal. Our concern was whether we would be able to catch the 6:40 pm ferry. Missing this means waiting for another one hour. The roads were pretty good but narrow with a lot of hairpin turns and for miles we were the only souls to be seen. You can imagine the thrill of riding alone.

It was just when we were soaked in our aloneness, climbing the ghats we came across two young cyclists who were slowly pedaling their way up. I slowed down the bike and initiated a quick conversation. Cycling all the way from Mumbai they were also going to Goa. This was their first bicycle trip. They too were heading towards the jetty. I informed them about the ferry timings. Cheering them up I accelerated. We wish we could stop and listen to their on road experiences, but we did not want to miss the ferry.

We reached the jetty 15 minutes before time. There were not many passengers. We were waiting for the ferryman to allow us in. And when he did, I got up to start my motorcycle and unexpectedly the cyclists turned up just before the ferry was about to leave. And there we were, stretching ourselves and one of them sharing their experiences as the ferry started moving with the wind gently kissing our faces. Their story reflected courage and determination. It was a good feeling to meet these inspiring souls.

After a 20 minutes of ferry ride, we reached Jaigad Jetty. Knowing we wouldn’t meet again, bidding them goodbye we parted our ways.

We reached Ganpatipule at 8:30 pm.

DAY 3 – GANPATIPULE to TARKARLI

Route – Ganpatipule~AareWare~Pawas~Devgad~Tarkarli (181 kms)

No more ferry crossing. Right till you reach Malvan, ride on this beautiful stretch with wonderful views of lush greens, clear, sparkling waters of pristine white beaches, and ancient colorful temples each of which has a unique story to tell.

Before you begin the ride, visit the 400 year old famous Ganpatipule Temple situated on the beach.  Around 1 km from the temple is Prachin Konkan Museum . This is an open air museum featuring sculptures depicting traditional konkan life and culture. A trip to Ganpatipule without visiting this is incomplete.

After a 30 minutes of ride, you will reach a combination of two beaches Aare & Ware which are located next to each other. The stretch is so breathtaking. Definitely a must halt. There is a certain freedom in finding a small piece of the world that belongs only to you, if only for a short time.

There are many places on this route where you would like to stop. Visit some villages on the route. Talk to the locals, fishermen. The people of Konkan are very helpful and humble.

Other places to explore enroute – Devgad & Kunkeshwar

We reached Malvan at 7:00 pm. Our stay was at Ghar Malvankarache (8600381490) – a homestay run by a humble family. They have budget friendly rooms which are clean and comfortable. But above all the food is just awesome. I tried Prawns Masala with Malvani Vade. It was simply delicious. Next day morning for breakfast, Archana aunty served us Ghavane with Cocunut chutney. Whenever I visit Malvan again, I am definitely going to eat here.

DAY 4 – EXPLORE MALVAN

A day is not enough to explore Malvan. Malvan is a kind of place that makes you want to stay on forever if possible – with the waves and the sands, the trees and the stars. But even if you are here for a day or two, you will take back something- if nothing else a snapshot of a unique seashell on a mesmerizing beach.

Take a leisurely walk through the villages, when sunlight filters in through the palms. You will pass women sorting dried fish outside their homes. Give them a smile and you will surely receive it back. This little Konkan town has a bustling jetty with a tangle of boats and roof tiled homes where the scent of wood smoke and aromas of fish curry drift into your memories.

Places you shouldn’t miss to see – Tarkarli Beach , Chiwla Beach , Deobagh Village & Sindhudurg Fort

If you love watersports, then indulge yourself in Scuba Diving , Dolphin Safari and other water activities held here.

DAY 5 – TARKARLI to GOA

Route – Tarkarli~Vengurla~Shiroda~Goa (109 kms)

It was time to go GOA. We were excited.

As we were riding towards Vengurla past peeping palm trees, towards a turn I heard a voice which seemed familiar to me. I turned to see and it was just what we hadn’t expected. There they were: the two cyclists. We were happy to meet them once again.

We used different modes of transport while roaming the roads but we could connect with each other the joy of enjoying the road trips. Road trips are full of surprises, isn’t it? Who knows, we could even meet in Goa.

Keep riding 50 kms till you reach Vengurla. Leisurely ride past the village in the shadow of the verdant plantations of cashewnuts, mango and coconut trees.

Around 3 km from the Vengurla market, Sagareshwar Beach is hidden away behind rows of tall casuarinas swaying in the wind. A small temple of Sagareshwara (Lord of the Sea) is located on the beach.

Located at the end of a winding hilly road and about a 45 minute ride from Sagareshwar is Shiroda Beach. A less explored and virgin region of the Konkan, Shiroda beach is carpeted with silvery white sands, cool blue waters and gentle sea breeze.

Other places to explore enroute – Nivati Beach , Redi Beach & Sawantwadi

We reached Goa at 4 pm. Our stay was in Anjuna, North Goa. Having checked in our guest house and freshening up, we spent the evening at Vagator Beach. If you are a party going person; then this is definitely the place for you with rave parties going till the wee hours of night. We somehow managed to find our small corner of happiness on this crowded beach

DAY 6, 7 & 8 – GOA, GOA & ONLY GOA

Hurray!! Finally in Goa. Yes, the much awaited destination. You have to plan these 3 days well depending on where you wish to stay between North & South Goa. These will again depend on your travel taste and what you want to experience in Goa. For peace and solitude, and offbeat experiences, head to South Goa.

We will share in short how we spent our 3 days in Goa –

Day 1 – We explored places which were near our guest house from Anjuna. Overall distance covered 40 kms exploring Baga beach, Sinquerim Fort, Reis Magos Fort, Fontainhas & Chapora. You must try Fruit Salad with Ice Cream at Scarlet Juice Centre, Chapora.

Day 2 – This day we rode 85 kms to South Goa to experience kayaking in the backwaters of Cola Beach . Cola beach is one of those offbeat destinations, where the beautiful blue lagoon meets the unstoppable wave of the Arabian sea.

You can rent a kayak for 30 minutes to surf through the backwater at Rs 150 only.

On your way back to North Goa, if you are able to reach before dusk take the route through Parra Road .  Lined with palm trees and fields on both sides, end your day watching the magical sunset.

Day 3 – An impulsive decision and we were riding towards Ribandar Jetty from where a ferry (free of cost) would take us to Chorao Island . Having done with beaches we wanted to explore something different. It seemed we had escaped into a sleepily quaint, laid-back and picturesque village from a different era with its Portuguese-styled manors and churches. It is also home to the offbeat Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary .

Once done with the island, we headed straight towards Morjim Beach to have lunch at Smoke Fish Cafe (8975557019) The restaurant is run by a family on the terrace serving authentic Goan homemade cuisine. One of the best foods we had in Goa.

We ended our last day shopping at Anjuna Flea Market and then taking a quiet walk on Anjuna Beach retrospecting on our journey from day one. This road trip had been one of the best things in life we had experienced.

Two more days on the road still…. The journey was not over yet.

DAY 9 – GOA to MURUD (DAPOLI)

Route – Goa~Kankavli~Chiplun~Khed~Dapoli~Murud (392 kms)

This was a long ride for us. Almost did 400 kms. We took NH66, the four lane Mumbai-Goa highway till Khed and then took a diversion towards Dapoli.

When we had halted at Sangameshwar for lunch, we decided not to stay in any of the hotels on the highway but instead chose to ride a few extra kilometers and stay on the beach. It was as if the sea was calling us back to the coastal route. So I called Aviraj Niwas, a homestay at Murud Beach in Dapoli where I had stayed earlier and immediately booked a room.

The highway is in good condition from Goa to Kankavli and you will enjoy riding on this four lane highway cruising at 60 kmph. After Lanja the road turns into a two lane. And you have to ride carefully as the road widening work is in progress and there are diversions every few meters.

These bumpy roads were tiring for both of us. But as soon as we left the highway and took a diversion to Dapoli we felt relief. We were once again riding on the coastal route. The sky at the sunset formed a perfect backdrop for a ride along the winding road. And in no time the moon slowly climbed up and casted its silvery reflection.

DAY 10 – MURUD (DAPOLI) to MUMBAI

Route – Murud~Dapoli~Mandangad~Tol Phata~Mangaon~Mumbai (250 kms)

Tired, but still we got up early in the morning as we had to go to Murud Beach for Dolphin Safari. We decided on this at dinner last night while talking to our host. He assured us that dolphins are guaranteed to be seen. So we thought of taking a chance. We did see a few of them after a long wait in the middle of the sea. The ferryman was kind enough not to drop us at shore without the sighting of dolphins.

Murud is a small town with a scenic and long stretch of beach dotted with crab holes and swaying palms. It also has many beach resorts situated amidst coconut plantations.

Olive Ridley Sea Turtles have also been spotted here

We explored a new route for our last day on the road. From Dapoli market, we took a left turn towards Mandangad . It took us to Mangaon on NH66 through internal village roads.

Returning home after being 10 days on the road was a bit depressing. I remembered one of John Denver’s compositions, ‘’ Hey, it’s good to be back home again”.

This homecoming was quite different from all the others I’ve had in my life. Coming home conjures up numerous emotions, and we were returning home with pleasant memories.

This route for the Mumbai to Goa road trip is by far the simplest route to take. The road is simple, smooth, and straight with a four-lane road all throughout. But, you would be troubled by paying taxes at the numerous toll booths that come along your way. Starting on the Mumbai Pune expressway for 94.1 km on the six-lane expressway, one would reach Pune in three hours. The Mumbai-Pune expressway merges into the NH4 along until the road reaches Belgaum. There is a sharp right-angled turn at the end of the expressway, which reads “Mumbai Pune Expressway ends here” indicating the beginning of the journey on the national highway.

Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: Mumbai To Goa Itinerary Via Konkan

I’ve done Coastal Maharastra Road Trip, otherwise known as Konkan Road Trip, twice: once in 2018, and once in 2020. The 2018 trip was done in a car with friends and the 2020 trip was done on a motorcycle, solo. Though I followed the same route, the itinerary was different. Both journeys took 4 days to complete.

This blog on Coastal Maharastra Road Trip Itinerary has been, therefore, written on the basis of the learning from both trips, with updated road conditions as of 2020.

Also, read these Motivational Travel Quotes I’ve handpicked for you.

Now, let’s get started with the topic at hand…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Trip

road trip mumbai

So far I believed that India has everything to offer but a scenic coastal ride, and to get the best of a road trip in India your options are limited to the Himalayas, with Spiti Valley and Leh Ladakh topping the list.

To make it even more ironic, every time someone asked me about my favourite coastal route in the world the first thing that came to my mind was the Great Indian Ocean Drive in Western Australia , or someplace in Italy. Though I am certainly not comparing the coastal roads of Australia or Italy with Maharashtra’s, the fact that I never explored my own backyard that I didn’t know what beauty it had to offer.

And then, Konkan Road Trip happened, and I realised that it’s not just one of the best road trips in Maharashtra, as often claimed, but one of the best in the world.

Note: Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharastra and Konkan Road Trips are both the same. The coastal region of Maharashtra is otherwise known as the Konkan region, hence the same thing. Now let’s start with the route map…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Route Map

Before you go on the route and start Google navigating, let me tell you that Google will keep navigating you from the main Mumbai to the Goa highway route. But since we are talking about the Mumbai to Goa coastal route, you will have to stick to the coast. Just have your wits about it and stay as close to the coast as you can.

For your reference, here is Mumbai to Goa Coastal Route by car. The same route is accessible by bikes too…

mumbai to goa coastal route by car

For those who love road trips and beaches, the coastal Konkan region, in Maharashtra is certainly a no-miss.

From roads running parallel to beaches to ferry crossings to an ever-changing landscape — that, at every 50 km, shift from high cliffs to beach-side drives to isolated hilltops barren with red laterite soil — the coastal Maharashtra road trip has all highlights.

For an intrepid, there is more to explore on this route than just the scenic beauty. This including a 16th-century Jaigad Fort, a 17th-century Ganesh Idol at Ganpati Pule, adventure water sports at Tarkarli, many flourishing Konkan villages, strange regional delicacies, and much more.

Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: More About Journey Than Destinations

Though the entire 600km stretch between Mumbai and Goa coastal route is a highlight, the three highlighted places that deserve a little more time include Harihareshwar, Ganpati Pule and Tarkarli (or Malvan).

For the most part of the trip, you will be driving on the state highway 4 (or SH4) which, in reality, is more like a narrow trail than a highway, but the natural beauty and the experiences it has to offer will make it up to you.

I mean imagine it this way… if you’re doing Mumbai to Goa taking NH 48 you can do the journey in about 12 hours. But if you’re doing the Konkan road trip, it takes at least three days (even if you’re driving throughout the day, every day). There must be something great and offbeat about it!

SH4 is known as the coastal route due to its proximity to the ocean. On several occasions (six times in total) it ends up in the ocean or a massive lagoon, forcing you to take a ferry to get to the other side.

konkan road trip

From moment to moment, the Konkan road trip also offers dramatic backdrops of the blue Arabian sea from atop a steep cliff, before taking you downhill for a close hug with the coast. As the journey nears Goa, the highway starts going inland more frequently, over surprisingly isolated and barren hills, with pleasant villages start showing periodically for a change.

Though for most the part, the SH4 remains a poor country road, at times, it turns into a well-marked and well-sealed highway too. Yet, doing more than 200km a day is quite a challenge and makes it impossible since the idea is to cherish a good road trip experience and grab the scenic beauty en route.

konkan road trip by bus

Tip: Since National Highway 48 is a better alternative to the coastal State Highway 4, Google will keep rerouting you to 48. So just have your wits about going parallel to NH48 and sticking closer to the coast. Wherever there’s a diversion, take the one taking you closer to the coast and that’s the scenic route. At times you may have to deviate and go a little inland too, but starting from Mumbai to all the way to Goa, there are a few different (though for the most part the SH4 only) highways running right next to the coast.

The Coastal Maharashtra route is off the tourist trail. Most tourists doing Mumbai-Goa or Pune-Goa take the better version of the roads and follow NH 48.

Coastal Maharashtra Or Konkan Road Trip Itinerary

  • Mumbai to Harihareshwar (1 ferry crossing)
  • Hariharshwar to Ganpati Pule (4 ferry crossings)
  • Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli (1 ferry crossing)
  • Tarkarli to Goa (no ferry crossings)

konkan bike road trip

Day 3 of the journey, i.e from Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli, remains the highlight of the journey with the most spectacular stretch of the whole trip starting right after Ganpati Pule. As you leave Ganpati Pule, the road climbs around a cliff with Aare Ware beach appearing at a distance below, on the right, providing gorgeous views. A perfectly carved road further compliments the experience.

From Ganpati Pule to all the way to Ratnagiri (a 25km stretch) you get periodic glimpses of the Arabic Sea shimmering on your right as the roads wind uphill and downhill regularly.

konkan coastal road trip

The three ferry crossings on Day 2 (at Bagmandala jetty, at Dhabol and at Tawsal) were also quite an experience and offered great photo ops.

konkan road trip itinerary

Tip : Bagmandala ferry (to Bankot) departs every hour and starts a 6 in the morning. The ferry from Dhabol to Dopave departs every 45 minutes, starting at 6.30 a.m. The last one leaves at 10 p.m. From Tavsal to Jaigad too the ferry runs approximately every 45 minutes, but this one’s the longest of all rides (around 20 mins) with the last ferry, again, leaving at 10 in the night. Cars, motorbikes, and even trucks can be transported on all three ferries.

The entire stretch has more than five ferry crossings all operating during the daytime only. Visit CarFerry.in to check the time schedule for each ferry point and save yourself from some needless waiting.

Coastal Maharashtra or Konkan Road Trip Highlights

Though there’s enough to see and do on the way, and one can easily spend a week slowly driving and still not get bored with the journey, for those doing it in the minimum time, yet enjoying a good share of stop-overs, here are my six suggested stops en route Mumbai-Goa following the coastal Maharashtra of State Highway 4:

Harihareshwar Beach

The highlight of the pilgrimage town of Harihareshwar, the Harihareshwar beach is ideal for those looking for a clean and soothing beach where one can spend some unhurrying time and forget their bustling life in the cities.

coastal maharashtra

The beach assures a noise-free ambience with no watersports and no loud tourists around, as most people visiting Harihareshwar come here for paying tribute to Lord Harihareshwar. There’s moreover only one shack available throughout its half a kilometre expanse.

mumbai to goa coastal Maharashtra

Anjanvel Village

One of the many villages en route, Anjanvel village offers an ideal rural escape. During our stop at Anjarle and a few hours of strolling and eating in the town, I found people in Anjanvel being very hospitable, with most of them eager to share smiles and engage in a happy conversation with tourists.

Anjanvel village

A noticeable highlight was the local Malvan food we had in the town, that was more a food tour experience.

malvan food

Harnai Fish Market

Though you’re going to find quite a few fish markets on State Highway 4, Harnai Fish Market just happens to be one of the largest and busiest. The eclectic atmosphere at Harnai Beach with women clad in bright sarees screaming and yelling for their best prices and the men going catching and bringing fishes from the ocean to the land is quite a sight. It’s amazing to see how as soon as fresh fish hit the beach, the action starts.

konkan fishing village

Aare Ware Beach Road

A 10 km stretch of a road the Aare Ware Beach road — that starts right from Ganpati Pule beach to the next T-point junction — is the most beautiful highlight of the entire Coastal Maharashtra route. With its many twists and turns, the road frequently goes uphill and downhill, with sometimes offering a distant view of the mighty blue ocean from up a cliff, and sometimes, a closer shrug.

konkan road trip

Devgad Fort & Ananvadi Fishing Village

If deserted forts and dramatic sunsets overlooking an infinite ocean is your thing then you’re going to fall in love with coastal Maharashtra. Starting Mumbai to all the way to Goa, we came across a few dozens abandoned forts, but the one we stopped by for capturing the sunset was the fort of Devgad and I can’t recommend it more.

devgad fort konkan

The adjoining fishing village of Ananwadi was moreover a great place to capture some village life.

coastal maharashtra villages

Tarkarli Village

Out of all the villages we explored, I particularly loved the setting of Tarkarli village.

tarkari village konkan

Though the highlight in Tarkarli is the adventure water sport (including Scuba diving, Jet Ski, Banana Boat Ride, and Parasailing, among others) for a photo buff, Tarkarli had much to offer. Just walk across the many intermingled bylanes and capture the essence of rural coastal Maharashtra.

If you explore each & every point it will take minimum 3 days to reach Malwan.

Hey, I am so glad to read your thoughts because I really enjoyed reading this. The way you explain your travel experience is truly awesome.

Awesome info.. this is exactly the kind of info i was looking for, for my sept monsoon roadtrip from Ahmedabad to Goa. Most blogs and videos show NH66 or Mumbai – Pune – Belgaum route which makes you reach the destination faster but doesnt let you enjoy the journey as much as SH4 would.

How are the road conditions on SH4 during monsoon? Good enough for driving by car without getting into trouble? Any idea / tips?

This sounds so idyllic, Dev! Good to hear that you are seeking out the treasures in your backyard.

Cheers Mohana. I am always seeking out for more treasures in India 🙂

A Konkan Road Trip Itinerary | Mumbai to Goa

road trip mumbai

Here’s a fun Konkan road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa with beach stops along the way…

Because why do something as mundane as flying to Goa, when you can frolic on endless beach sand, breathe in the heavy salt air, and eat freshly cooked spicy Konkan food en voyage? Here’s a majorly fun and scenic road trip itinerary starting from Mumbai and ending in Goa with beach stops along the way. The itinerary assumes stops on the onward journey, but you can mix it up and do a few on the return journey as well. Prepare to be well and truly tanned (I took this in April!) and happily exhausted.

The summary itinerary

What you will do on the road trip from Mumbai to Goa and the beaches you will stop at.

The Konkan Road Trip Itinerary looks something like this: Mumbai –> 5 hours to Harihareshwar –> 5 hours to Velneshwar –> 1 hour 30 min via ferry to Ganapatiphule –> 4 hours 30 min to Tarkali –> 4 hours to Goa (South). Total driving time of 20-22 hours on one side and this is on the higher side because of the scenic beach route you’ll take (more on that below). You can return via NH4 or the Bangalore-Pune highway which takes about 12 hours non-stop from Goa to Mumbai. Note: All timings are roundabout, and Google Maps is your best friend.

Two routes show up when you plot the way from Mumbai to Goa on Google Maps. The best and the usually taken route is along the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway 4 (NH4), which crosses Pune, and takes 11-12 hours (for a non-stop trip). The other is via NH66 which goes through Chiplun, Kolad, Mahad and Malvan. This one takes 12-13 hours (for a non-stop trip). The longest and the most scenic route is MSH4, also called the Sagari Mahamarg , which is either a drive next to or close to the sea. In most cases, the sea will be a few hundred feet away, and beaches will keep popping up. The beauty of this route is the two-lane road with sparse traffic running through the Western Ghats and flanked by forests and beaches. The winding roads ascend and descend at will, and during monsoons, the swaying palms, the lush surroundings, the patter of rain, and the gurgling sea make splendid accompaniment. This route takes 14-15 hours (for a non-stop trip) and 20-22 hours for the route suggested in this post. The Sagari Mahamarg route will not show up on Google Maps unless you put one location to the next and change as you drive along.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Also, read this for more on the Sagari Mahamarg road.

Where to stay

All my recommended Maharashtra stays, as part of this itinerary, are at MTDC. I am a big fan of MTDC. Modest, no-nonsense and no-frills service, I find it a total value for money. You know exactly what to expect. One Medimix soap, one Vatika/ Sunsilk shampoo sachet, a plastic jar of filter water, beige blankets and white sheets, a flat-screen TV with less than 10 channels, no electric kettle or coffee or tea sachets, no (or poor) Wi-Fi, basic local food which, if you’re fortunate, will be delicious. And always, always the best locations and properties that span acres. Check-in is at 10:30 am and checkouts at 9 am. Book MTDC properties at their website . I’m no affiliate. Just a fan.

In Goa, you’d be spoilt for choice. There are beautiful and inexpensive mid-tier hotels and also some very fancy five-stars. Some of my favourite beaches and inexpensive properties are:

Majestic Comforts in Varca-Benaulim: Cosy beach huts, a few minutes’ walk from the sea, Majestic Comforts is reminiscent of properties in Bali. The private sundecks right in front of the fairly un-visited beach are the clincher. This property has the kind of frills I need.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Cavala in Baga: Located in the busy north, Cavala is quaint, classy, and the right kind of pretentious. Weekends are great fun with live music and dancing. It is a 1o minute walk to the busy and popular Baga beach.

Road trip from Mumbai to Goa with beach stops itinerary

Mariposa Beach Grove in Agonda offers fairly inexpensive sea-facing villas and you couldn’t get closer to the sea than this. The resort is located in Agonda, a sandy beach that serves as a nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles in September.

And now for the Mumbai to Goa road trip itinerary with beach stops | It’s easy, cheap, and fun

Stop at Harihareshwar

We used the NH66 to get here from Mumbai, but you could plot from Mumbai to Harihareshwar on Google Maps and drive via Alibaug and Murud, with ferries (check Dighi/ Agardanda jetty) thrown in-between. This increases travel time by an hour or so but is an adventure unto itself.

Harihareshwar is a town in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, surrounded by three hills, and with a pristine beachfront. Towards the north of the town is the temple of Lord Harihareshwar, said to have been blessed by Lord Shiva. Thus, Harihareshwar is also called Dev-Ghar or the ‘house of God’. It has two primary beaches − one, in front of Harihareshwar Temple, and the other, about 2 km long, in front of the MTDC Resort.

road trip mumbai

Stop at Velneshwar

Velnenshwar is a village on the Western Coast of Maharashtra, about 70 km from Ratnagiri, and 20 km from Guhagar. A Shiva temple is its essential claim to fame but it is also home to pristine beaches. Stay at MTDC Velneshwar, an expansive property with great views and a 10 minute downhill walk to the beach. Since not many people visit Velneshwar, opting instead to go to Ganapatiphule, and so, you might have the resort and beach all to yourself.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Velneshwar to Ganapatipule takes about 2 hours but you can shorten the time slightly and add a nice little cruise along the way, by taking your car aboard a ferry using the Jaigad Tawsal ferry service. The route is here . Ferries ply every hour or so. Cost is as per vehicle size and about INR 150 for a 4-wheeler.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

After reaching the other shore and before heading to Ganapatipule, swing by Jaigad fort . Entry is free. The fort-ruins offer a sea-walk along the fort’s walls end-to-end. Nestled on a cliff, the impressive edifice overlooks a bay formed as the Shastri river enters the Arabian Sea. It was built by the Sultan of Bijapur in the 16th century.

Mumbai to Goa roadtrip

Stop at Ganapatipule

The Ganapatipule beach is among the cleaner commercial beaches I’ve seen along the Maharashtra coastline. Located in the Ratnagiri district, the town of about a few thousand residents is also famous for a 400-year old Ganesh temple.

The MTDC property on the Ganapatipule beach is a HUGE. The bamboo huts facing the sea and the VIP suites have the best view. Each hut is equipped with a clothing line where you can wash and dry your clothes—which may seem like an excess—but not so next to the sea. We found only the food and Wi-Fi services wanting. An MTDC boat club is in the works; that promises to be fun. Apart from that, local clubs organize events such as parasailing, banana boats, and Jet Ski. Partake at your own risk. The beach is considered dangerous during many months of the year, so caution is advised.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Part of the Ganapatipule bunch of beaches, the nearby Arey Ware Beach is well worth a quick stop. It is a beautiful stretch of white sand shore and sparkling aquamarine water. Grab a coconut from one of the stalls at the entrance (or hide a beer can in your pocket), walk inside through a lush cluster of coconut groves to enjoy some quiet time off from the tourist bustle.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Stop at Tarkarli

Located roughly 4 hours from Goa, Tarkarli is hard to reach from Mumbai and easily bypassed (you might as well go to Goa) but it is a beach destination well worth a visit. Tarkarli is located in the Malvan taluka of Sindhudurg district, with about 2000 local residents and a handful of average hotels. MTDC runs three properties in the region and the scuba courses run by MTDC’s IISDA (Indian Institute of Scuba Diving and Aquatic Sports) are highly rated and very popular. I couldn’t do it because I hadn’t booked it in advance, but I’ll definitely try this in a few months.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Very close to Tarkali, about 30 min away, is the impressive Sindhudurg fort . Built by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century, this is another fort that offers awesome sea views.

Stop at Goa

What can I say about Goa? I’m so in love with it that I wrote a whole book on it! For a frequent traveller to Goa, the rite of passage is to start from the beaches in the North (Arpora, Baga, Calangute, Candolim, and Anjuna) which are more populous and eventful, and then move to the lower visited, less ‘happening’ but more pristine southern Goa beaches (Palolem, Varca, Cavelossim, Benaulim, Colva, Agonda). (For now) the beaches of South Goa are cleaner and peaceful, with the sea being the only object of glory and distraction, as it should be.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Rent a bike and roam about on the quaint streets of Goa. Goa used to be a Portuguese colony until 1961 and a mixed culture is evident in the gorgeous houses and food. Popular places to visit are Fort Aguada, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Mario Gallery, Nights Markets, and some gorgeous churches and awesome restaurants. On the beaches, especially in the north, you can partake in activities and water sports such as Jet Ski, snorkelling, banana boating, kayaking, scuba diving, parasailing etc. Select beaches also have surfing and kneeboarding. Most tourists ignore Panjim, the capital, but it is an interesting walk down Fountainhas , also known as Goa’s equivalent of the Latin Quarters.

Hi Smita, can you share the road condition in your Mumbai to Goa trip, planning for a bike trip till Ganpatipule via the Sagari Mahamarg. Thanks.

Roads are fairly drivable (not highway level but good enough). I don’t recall any place where we struggled. Hope that answers your question. Have a fun trip!

Hey thanks! I’ll be following this route from my bike trip next week.

Super! May you have a lot of fun 🙂

Hi Smita, I live in the UK but planning on driving from Bombay to Goa in february 2024. I am originally from Goa and visit every year and have driven in Goa. I have also travelled extensively around India. I have never driven outside of Goa. I would be taking the scenic route from Bombay to Goa. How dangerous is it? Is it really not busy on this route? Thank & love the blog. regards, Allan

Hi Allan – Thank you for reading. I took the trip during Covid, at which time there were fewer crowds, but I presume there will be considerably more cars on the road now. I am not sure what you are referring to when you ask about the trip being dangerous. The roads are quite good and safe overall. You may want to break the journey with more stops, if needed, to avoid driving at night. Have a fun trip!

Mumbai to Hampi Road Trip – How to Reach, What to See

A few years backs, I visited the temple complex at Belur and Halebidu, Karnataka to see the two architectural marvels developed during the rules of Hoysala. That architecture is known as Hoysala architecture. This Diwali, I planned for a Mumbai to Hampi Road Trip, covering Hampi, Aihole, Pattadakal, Badami, and Bijapur.

It was a 5 night/ 6 days plan from Mumbai by road with two nights stay at Hosapete (for Hampi), two nights stay at Badami, and one night stay at Bijapur.

Lately, I have developed an interest in the history of middle-aged India especially that of South India. Somehow, I feel that South India has been neglected by our historians.

We got detailed descriptions of various kingdoms/dynasties of medieval North India but our history textbooks, surprisingly, contain very few details about the dynasties which were based in South India. The achievements of those dynasties not only in terms of territory but also in terms of trade and commerce, art, and literature deserve more attention.

Quick Navigation

Mumbai to Hampi Road Trip

Our plan for the day was to reach Hosapete. We had pre-booked accommodation at Hotel Maurya Viajynagar TB Dam, Hosapete.

Though the plan was to start by 6.30 am, we could not start before 8.15 am. My father-in-law and brother-in-law were joining from Kolkata and their train was later. We took JVLR-Powai-Airoli route. Being a Saturday, we did not encounter much traffic in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and it was all clear on the expressway after Kalamboli.

The first break of the day was taken at Khalapur for breakfast at the food court immediately after the Khalapur toll booth.

Khalapur toll booth

After spending around 30 minutes there, we resumed our journey at 10.15 am.

Mumbai to Hampi Road Trip

We took an unplanned tea break at a roadside tea stall at Kothrud, Pune because I was feeling a bit drowsy. We crossed Satara around 1.15 pm. While approaching Satara, we encountered a slight drizzle.

For the first day’s lunch, we were carrying homemade food. Around 1.45 pm, we parked our car on the service road at Karad and had our lunch, and resumed our journey around 2.15 pm.

Mumbai to Hampi Road Trip

The Brake Problem

Then we faced the first major problem of the day or the only major problem of the entire trip. After crossing a toll booth, 11-12 kms before Kolhapur, I realized that the brake is not working. Fortunately, at that point in time speed was low since we just started from the toll booth.

There was a truck in front of us but I managed to avoid any collision somehow and parked the car at the side of the road. Then we started looking for any garage/mechanic on google map and found one garage 3-3.5 kms away towards Kolhapur. So we took the car to that garage driving slowly using the left lane.

While doing so, we found that though the brake was not working at the first stroke, it was working on the second stroke. We were a bit perplexed because I got my car serviced a few days back and got brake pads changed.

The Solution

I called up the service center and reported the problem to them. They were also confused. After reaching the garage, we explained the problem to the mechanic and made him talk to the service center. Then the mechanic took the car for a drive and came back after 5 minutes stating the problem has been resolved.

What he explained to me that while the brake pads are new, the brake shoes are old and worn out, that’s why the problem took place. Had the car run for another 200 kms, this problem would not have happened.

What he did (as described by my brother-in-law and wife, because I was not accompanying him during the drive) was to apply full brake after picking up a high speed. Apparently, he did it 3-4 times. When he delivered the car, I found the brake perfectly normal.

He assured me that the problem has been completely resolved and I can drive the car confidently. We had spent around 45 minutes sorting out this issue.

After some time, we crossed Kolhapur. Though the mechanic had told me that the problem was completely resolved, I drove the car at moderate speed for the first 30-40 kms and applied brake multiple times. After being sure that the brake was working perfectly, I started speeding up.

I had covered almost the entire NH48 (from Delhi to Bengaluru) in relation to my earlier trips and found Kolhapur-Belagavi (Belgaum)-Dharwad stretch is one of the best sections and a speed of 100-120km/hr can be maintained easily.

Mumbai to Hampi Road Trip

We crossed Belagavi (Belgaum) around 5.15 pm and reached Dharwad by 6 pm. After Belagavi, we again experienced some rains. By the time we reached Dharwad, it was dark.

Mumbai to Hampi Road Trip

Dharwad – Hubbali

Dharwad-Hubbali stretch of NH48 (~18 km) is a single-lane highway. There was considerable traffic in both directions. Since it was dark by that time, it was very difficult to overtake. So we have to drive slowly. The road surface is good. Therefore, though the drive was slow, it was not painful.

After reaching Hubbali, we had to leave NH48. Google Map navigated us through Hubbali town and its outskirts and got us on NH67 for the final stretch of the day’s journey. As per, Google Map, we were 120 km away from the destination of the day. We took a break of 15 minutes and then resumed around 7.15 pm. And the worst nightmarish drive of the entire trip commenced.

Work is going on for making NH67 a four-lane highway. As a result, the condition of the road is very poor. It was a bumpy, dusty ride with recurring changes of the lane. After a tiring drive of ~ 115 km, we finally got a good road for the last 10 kms and reached Hotel Maurya Vijayanagara TB Dam at 10 pm.

We had our dinner immediately after reaching there and retired for the day. This distance traveled on day 1 is 752 km.

Hotel Maurya Vijayanagara TB Dam

Hotel Maurya Vijaynagar TB Dam is a KSTDC property. It is quite an old property. Its foundation stone was laid on 10th August 1960 and it was opened on 16th June. At that time Hosapete was a part of Mysore State. Mysore was renamed Karnataka in 1973.

The rooms were quite spacious. The service was very good. Still, I would not recommend staying here because of the conditions of the room and bathrooms. As per the manager of the property, funds have been approved for the renovation of this property. I hope they renovate this property as soon as possible.

From Mumbai/Pune, there are three routes for Hosapete.

route 1

While going, we used route 1 i.e up to Hubbali via NH48 and from there to Hosapete via NH67. At present, NH67 is in pathetic condition and more than 100 km has to be covered to reach Hosapete from Hubbali. Therefore, I would recommend avoiding this route.

While returning, we used route 3 with a detour for Badami, Pattadakal, and Aihole. Road condition in this route is fantastic. Hosapete to Vijaypura (Bijapur) by NH50 which is in superb condition. Vijaypura to Sholapur (Approx 95 km) via NH52. This stretch is a single lane.

But the condition of the road is quite good especially on the Karnataka side (~70% of this stretch). Sholapur to Pune (approx. 200 km) via NH 65 which also offers a delightful driving experience. Pune to Mumbai via the expressway and therefore does not require any further elaboration.

The only challenge in this route is Pune city has to be crossed in the east-west direction which can become very painful during pick hours. Still, I rate route 3 higher than route 1.

It is a bit difficult for me to comment on route 2 since we have not taken this route in either direction, but I guess it would be better than route 1 given the current condition of NH67.

Sightseeing in Hampi

Please find the recommended itinerary for sightseeing in Hampi. Hampi is a vast place and therefore, seeing all the attractions without a car is nearly impossible. You can also continue reading the next part of the travelogue to know more in detail.

If you want, you may skip the Gaali Anjaneya temple

Just before reaching, Krishna Temple, on the right-hand side there is a place where there is a row of stone plates. That place was a dining hall of army garrison. Please tell the guide to show the place

Adjacent to Krishna temple, there are attractions like Lakshmi Narasimha idol (Ugra Narasimha idol), Badaviling temple Sasaivekalu (Muster Seed) Ganesha idol, Krishna Bazar, Krishna Pushkarini

Sasaivekalu (Muster Seed) Ganesha idol is at the base of Hemkutha Hill on the northern side. There is a walking path for reaching the top of the Hemkutha Hill starting from the Sasaivekalu (Muster Seed) Ganesha idol.

However, the Hemkutha hill temple complex is on the southern slope of the hill. Therefore, you may consider avoiding this hike until and unless you are keen to see the sunset from the top of Hemkutha Hill.

Your next stop will be Kadalakelu Ganesha temple which is again at the foothill of Hemkutha temple on the eastern side. There is a walking path from the backside of the Kadalakelu Ganesha temple which goes towards the northern slope of Hemkutha hill.

This is a stoned flat walking trail and therefore is easily walkable. This will lead to the main gate of the Hemkutha hill complex. After that gate, the slope starts. So once reaching the gate, take a call whether you want to stroll on the slope. Even if you do not go for the walk, the view of the temple complex from the gate itself is quite majestic.

Then you go to Virupaksha temple. In front of Virupakha temple is Virupaksha bazar. At the other end of the Bazar is the statue of a monolithic bull.

From the monolithic bull, trekking routes start for the Achutya Raya temple complex and Matanga Hill. These two places cannot be accessed by car.

The next destination for the day is the Kodandaram temple. Though, the google map shows it is accessible by road, our experience was a bit different.

From the monolithic bull idol, the road takes a left turn and after proceeding a few hundred meters, there is a parking lot. From there you have to walk up to Kodandarama temple. The road is a bit uneven but manageable.

After seeing the Kodandarama temple, you may go boating on the Tungabhadra River.

Your last stop for the day is Chandikeshwara temple. If there is a paucity of time, you may include it in the next day’s itinerary. Please also see Uddana Birbhadra Temple which is adjacent to Chandikeshwara temple

If you are keen to see the sunset, come back to Sasaivekalu (Muster Seed) Ganesha and walk up to the top of Hemkutha Hill.

Start the days with the Vijay Vitthala temple. First, you have to go to the parking lot of Vijay Vitthala temple which is a few hundred meters away from the temple. From the parking lot, you can reach the temple by walking or by trolley bus.

Please also see Gejjala Mandapa which is very near to the parking lot. Further, while going to Vijay Vitthala temple, you will see Vijay Vitthala Bazar on the right-hand side and Kudure Gompe Mandapa on the left-hand side.

Your next destination is the Queen’s bath. There are other three attractions near Queen’s Bath namely Chandrasekhara temple, Saraswati temple, and Octagonal bath. Those are not exactly on the main road but a few hundred meters walk from the main road.

After Queen’s bath, you will take a right turn leaving the main road for a gravel road which leads to the Royal Enclosure followed by Hajararama temple.

After Hajararama temple, the road bifurcates. Take the right prong for Zenana Enclosure. Zenana Enclosure houses Queen’s palace (only basement) and Lotus Mahal. Other adjacent attractions are Elephants’ stable, Guards quarter, Madhava (Ranga) temple, and Jain temple (for this you have to walk a bit)

From there come to the junction and take the right turn. Immediately after taking the right turn, you will find the palace of Vir Harihara and mint on your left-hand side. This is basically adjacent to Hajararama temple, at its backside. This would be followed by an old mosque and watchtower.

Once you proceed further, the gravel road will again connect to the main road which you would have left at Queen’s Bath. At that junction is Prasanna Virupaksha temple

That would be the end of day 2. If you have some time left you can cover any of the attractions missed on day 1 or for a repeat visit
