Getting care while traveling just got easier

Kaiser Permanente’s agreement with Cigna provides more convenient access to care when you’re away from home.

The last thing anyone wants to worry about while traveling for work or on vacation is how to get emergency or urgent health care if you need it during your trip. A new collaboration with Cigna eases that concern for Kaiser Permanente members.

Our members who are away from home can now access Cigna’s national PPO, or preferred provider organization, network of physicians and providers should they need emergency or urgent care during their travels.

“This new feature provides our members an improved experience, added convenience, and greater confidence that if they get sick or are injured while away from home, they will have access to great care,” said Arthur Southam , MD, executive vice president of health plan operations for Kaiser Permanente. “This gives our members another option to get the high-quality care they need, wherever they are.”

More ways to get care

Our members now have even more ways to get care when and how they need it — virtually and in person. With Get Care Now on kp.org , members have 24/7 access to care from Kaiser Permanente health care professionals by phone or video. For in-person care while away from home, Kaiser Permanente members are covered for urgent and emergency care, anywhere in the world. This new access to Cigna’s U.S. provider network makes getting that care easier and more convenient.

As part of this improved experience with Cigna, members with Kaiser Permanente HMO or exclusive provider organization plans won’t pay up front or have to file a claim for reimbursement — they will only be responsible for their regular copay or other cost share.

And if it’s more convenient, members can still go to any urgent or emergency care facility while traveling and submit a claim to Kaiser Permanente for reimbursement.

Cruises   ---------

Go Travel was founded in Miami in 1979 – a time in which cruising as we know it now was just beginning to take shape. Previously, cruising had been purely destination-oriented, but over the last 40 years, cruising has evolved into an industry full of every option imaginable. The choices for guests are much clearer. Not only do you have a choice of ocean relaxation, arctic adventure, river exploration, and super luxury yachting, but also you have an onboard choice of "let's dance all night" live bands, great lecturers and education, full steady courses on computing and finances, and culinary experiences with some of the top chefs in the world. The selection can vary from cruises ships catering to families and children to exclusive small ship journeys and specialty themed itineraries. Our key staff has witnessed this industry growth throughout the years and thus have the expertise and knowledge to match you with that exact cruise experience that’s best for you. With the majority of all major cruise lines being based in Florida, Go Travel’s Florida headquarters location definitely brings advantages giving us close proximity to our cruise line partners for continuous development in terms of education, negotiation, and cooperation. best travel tote bags

The 9 Best Travel Tote Bags to Take on the Go, According to Experts

They're both stylish and durable.

Jonathan Alder, a Winter Park, Florida-based luxury travel advisor and founder of Jonathan’s Travels , has plenty of practice testing totes. He’s visited all seven continents across 72 countries personally, and has planned more than 30,000 client trips to date (advising them how and what to pack before departure).

“To steer clear of an unorganized inconvenience during a trip, a good travel tote bag must have spacious compartments that are easy to access and repack for built-in organization,” Alder says. “Being able to bring all essentials on the go while keeping everything organized is the ultimate goal. Durability is also important for a bag that can keep up with you!”

Mary Helen Law, a Rome, Georgia-based founder of Law Luxury Travel has six years of experience professionally planning trips in her role as a luxury travel advisor, and echoes those sentiments, noting that “functionality is key.” She adds, “I keep all of my most important items with me at all times: wallet, keys, chargers, laptop, travel toiletries, and medicine.”

This way, you’re prepared if your checked bag doesn’t make it quite as quickly as you do. It’s also wise to pack a change of clothes in a tote or weekender, Law says, just in case. The best luxury tote bags for travel align with the vibe of your trip and your wardrobe. Seek out a sportier option if you’re taking an active vacation. Or if it’s a business trip, a tailored and chic design might be best. For a solo vacation or a mother-daughter trip , a versatile weekender can be ideal.

Regardless of where or why you’re traveling, the best travel totes and weekenders come with ample pockets that allow for easy access to the essentials. Comfortable straps and/or handles, laptop pockets, pass-through bands that attach to luggage handles (AKA a “trolley sleeve”), and secure closures all earn bonus points in our ratings system.

Constructed with recycled polyester and a recycled faux leather trim, this travel tote comes in black, beige, maple, and atlas pink colorways. Inside the tote, you’ll find two water bottle pockets to help you stay well-hydrated, as well as a 15-inch padded laptop pocket so your tech tools can come with you anywhere. Outside, you’ll find a handy zipper pocket and a trolley sleeve that easily slides over your roller bag’s handles for convenient carrying.

You’ll likely be charmed by all of the thoughtful details and the clever construction of this water-resistant weekender. While it looks compact and tucks nicely atop your carry-on or checked luggage (via a trolley sleeve), the interior has plenty of space for a 16-inch laptop, dividers and zippered pockets for easy access to all of the essentials, and an internal key hook so you won’t have to dig through the bottom of the bag. Bonus: This, like all July bags, comes with a 100-day return policy so you can test it out to confirm that you love it.

Choose from jet black, salt white, navy blue, or coast blue, then add a monogram for just $35 more. Then your zipper-topped, pocket-packed Away tote is ready to join you as your flight carry-on or commuter bag to and from the office (or to run errands). A snap-secured padded pocket fits up to a 15-inch laptop, and the bag is made with water-resistant nylon and leather trim.

Structured, chic, and practically runway-ready, this travel tote proves that Dagne Dover can excel at much more than fanny packs and backpacks. (Those are among their most popular bestsellers .) Mother Nature will approve of this vegan leather tote, too. Open the zipper top and you’ll spy the recycled REPREVE® lining that’s made from six recycled plastic bottles, along with several pockets, a vegan leather key chain, and a small padded laptop pocket.

Featuring scratch-resistant vegan leather on the outside, a sturdy zipper top, and a soft cotton twill fabric interior, the Metro Tote is available in four timeless hues: carbon black, ivory, saddle tan, and mahogany. The long tote handles can be carried by hand, of course, but they also are spacious enough to slip over your shoulder. Inside, a water bottle pocket, a small laptop sleeve (14 inches), and several small pockets await to help corral your wallet, pens, passport, keys, and other staples.

If Alder could only choose one travel tote to be his plus one on all of his global adventures, it would be this Solgaard weekender. Available in Baltic black, Galway green, or Atlantic navy durable Shore-Tex fabric, Alder—who “travels nonstop for work”—has taken this bag on all of his trips for the past year.

“It works as my main piece of luggage for short trips due to the amount of clothing it can fit, and its compact size makes it a perfect carry-on,” Alder tells us. The built-in shelving makes it sneakily spacious, Alder adds, and it has plenty of interior and exterior pockets that are easy to access, including a fleece-lined 16-inch laptop sleeve and two expanding side pockets that are ideal for toting an umbrella and a water bottle.

As for Law, she was shocked by this budget bag. The trolley sleeve initially lured her in, and the price point made her think that she had nothing to lose. “I've had this bag for 2 years, and I use it almost every time I travel (which, as a travel advisor, is frequently),” Law says.

One huge highlight? “So. Many. Pockets,” she says, including a fleece-lined one for jewelry and a padded 15-inch laptop sleeve. The water-resistant nylon exterior makes this ideal to double as a gym bag, Law adds. “This is, by far, the most functional bag I have ever owned.”

Best Driving Vacations 2024: Go on the ultimate full-circle adventure around Lake Erie

Highlights include beaches, wineries, history and a stop in ontario to admire the natural wonder of niagara falls..

Horseshoe Falls, one of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls, lies predominantly in Canada

Today we continue on our journey highlighting four of the best driving destinations from central Ohio.

From a circle tour of “our Great Lake” to the architectural wonders of a modernist sister city three hours away, these extraordinary adventures are wonderful ways to widen your horizons in 2024.

Today's installment is Part 3 of 4 destination packages from Columbus Monthly's annual travel guide. We hope you enjoy.

Part 1: Best Driving Vacations 2024: Explore the Northern Shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Experiencing Lake Erie

Lake Erie was the last Great Lake to be discovered and explored by European adventurers. Don’t make their mistake. And if you decide to do some lakefront exploring this year, consider something more than a quick trip to Cedar Point or Put-in-Bay .

Sure, Ohio’s lakeshore is packed with fun and interesting destinations. But three other states and the Canadian province of Ontario also share the Lake Erie shoreline. A multiday international circle tour of our Great Lake offers something for every traveler, including wineries, history, city lights, natural delights, beaches and fun in, on or next to the water.

From Columbus, a complete circle tour of the lake requires at least 12 hours of driving in total. So allow three or four days for a leisurely circumnavigation with plenty of stops along the way.

Of course, it doesn’t matter which direction you circle the lake, but assuming your coin flip demands “counterclockwise,” a good first stop from Columbus is Ohio’s Grand River Valley wine region east of Cleveland.

The region, which includes the Vines & Wine trail in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties, takes advantage of a lake-influenced microclimate to grow a wide variety of grapes, especially American-European hybrids that allow production of some tasty and sophisticated vintages. Several good lodging options in the area, including some at the wineries, also offer a good choice for a first night’s stay, especially after a few tastings.

Part 2: Best Driving Vacations 2024: Take a Battlefield Tour of Pennsylvania and Maryland

Pennsylvania’s Presque Isle State Park is a large, sandy peninsula that juts into the lake, forming a natural barrier protecting the harbor at the city of Erie and featuring beaches, nature trails and plenty of room for stretching your legs before the next segment of the journey. Buffalo, New York, is a better travel destination than its reputation might suggest, at least if you visit after the last of the winter’s lake-effect snow has melted. The city has a number of sites associated with famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright , including the Martin House , one of Wright’s great achievements in Prairie-style architecture.

Niagara Falls may be a cliche, but it’s a magnificent, awe-inspiring one. Cross the border into Canada for the best views of the natural wonder and the best places to spend the night.

Remember, you’ll need a current passport to make the international crossing. (You don’t have a passport ? What are you waiting for?) Driving along the northern shore of Lake Erie reveals a stretch of lovely farms and orchards dotted by a series of lakeside towns, each seemingly more charming than the last. Port Stanley, Leamington, Kingsville, Amherstberg and others offer pleasant waterfront business districts with shopping, cozy bed and breakfasts, historic sites and restaurants and diners often featuring local and scrumptious lake-caught perch.

Point Pelee National Park is situated on and around a natural point that sticks out far into the lake. It’s a prime spot for watching the migrating birds that use it as a jumping-off point before flying across the lake every spring. (And if you walk out to the very tip of the ever-shifting sandy-stony point, and pocket the last pebble above the waterline, you’ll have the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland as a souvenir.)

Lake-rambling gamblers can, of course, play in the casinos of Toledo or Cleveland, but why not give the slots and tables a try at Caesars Windsor , across the border from Detroit (which has several casinos of its own)? The view of the Detroit skyline is quite lovely from Windsor. Plus, there’s something a bit exotic about placing a bet with colorful Canadian currency. And every $100 Canadian lost is only $75 American — so you’re already ahead!

Toledo is another town that doesn’t get its tourism props, but be sure to stop by the National Museum of the Great Lakes at the Toledo Maritime Center on the Maumee River near downtown. The center has many great exhibits about all of the Great Lakes, including their natural history, commercial activity, shipwrecks, lighthouses and much more. Visitors can also tour the retired coal ship Col. James M. Schoonmaker, once the largest freighter on the lakes.

From Toledo, a traveler can call it a tour and head south on U.S. 23 toward central Ohio, or continue along the lake to more familiar Ohio stops such as Port Clinton , Put-in-Bay, Sandusky and on to Cleveland.

Or you might just be tempted to turn around and try the drive in the other direction.

Where to Stay Along the Way

The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake is a great place to stay while exploring Ohio wine country, and even offers a shuttle to and from several area wineries. Stays range from about $110 per night. Many hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario, offer magnificent views, such as at the Hilton Fallsview , with rates for view rooms beginning at less than $150 per night. Lake Erie’s north shore has many cozy inns and B&Bs, including the Hallmark-cute Kettle Creek Inn in Port Stanley, with rooms beginning about $100 per night. thelodgeatgeneva.com , niagarafallshilton.com , kettlecreekinn.com

Wildflower season is here at Pinnacles National Park: What to know before you go

go travel 951

It’s the prime time of year to visit Pinnacles National Park in California.

“Pinnacles has a stunning wildflower bloom that occurs between February and June, courtesy of the greatest bee species diversity density on the planet,” explained Christopher Symons, West lead ranger and volunteer coordinator at the park. “Over 500 species of bees reside in the small boundary of Pinnacles National Park.”

Spring visitors are treated to vibrant blossoms in nearly every color of the rainbow.

"In April, most of the March-blooming species are still blossoming, and such species as Johnny-jump-ups, virgin's bower, gilia, suncups, chia, black sage, pitcher sage, larkspur, and bush lupine have joined the spectacular display," according to the park's website.

But spring isn’t the only time visitors can enjoy the park. Here’s what travelers should know about the latest national park in USA TODAY’s yearlong series .

Why is Pinnacles National Park famous?

Pinnacles is known for its namesake rock spires , wildflowers and wildlife, particularly California condors .

“They were a bird that was on the brink of extinction,” said Richard Moorer, the park’s manager of Interpretation and Visitor Services.

According to the National Park Service, as few as 22 California condors were left by the early 1980s, but collaborative conservation efforts have boosted the still critically endangered species’ numbers. Pinnacles National Park is one place where captive-bred California condors are released to the wild.

“Wildlife being wildlife, I hate to guarantee that you're going to see anything in particular,” but Moorer said, “Your chance of seeing a condor here at Pinnacles is exceptionally good.”

The park’s caves are also popular.

“One of the largest explorable talus cave systems in the United States is here at Pinnacles,” Symons said. “Visitors wanting to experience this should know conditions are rugged.”

The park’s stargazing opportunities are less famous but nonetheless notable. They are spotlighted in Star Parties over the summer.

“We have a really nice night sky here at Pinnacles,” Moorer said.

What is the closest city to Pinnacles National Park?

The city of Hollister is closest to the east side of the park. Soledad is closest to the west.

“The two halves don’t connect and offer compelling but separate trip options,” said Symons. “The east has the campground and the most photogenic part of the park, the Bear Gulch Reservoir , while the west is day-use only and has the best spot for sunsets and moonrises on the lesser known but fantastically gorgeous Prewett Point Trail .”

The closest major airport is San José Mineta International Airport. San Jose, Santa Cruz and Monterey are all less than an hour and a half away by car from Pinnacles.

How much does it cost to go to the Pinnacles?

There is a $30 entry fee for private vehicles at the park.

Can I drive through Pinnacles National Park?

No. There is no road through the park, which spans over 26,000 acres . For comparison, Yosemite spans nearly 760,000 acres .

“You can drive around the outside, and that takes about an hour and a half,” Moorer said. “Make sure that when you're putting it in your navigation system – GPS, what have you – make sure that it's going to the south. There is technically a road that runs to the north, but it's not well maintained. It's not a road that I would intentionally send anybody on.”

How long should I spend in Pinnacles National Park?

Moorer said most visitors spend a day in the park, but avid hikers and rock climbers may stay longer.

“You definitely wouldn't get the full Pinnacles experience if you were just driving by, stopping in for an hour,” he said.

There are more than 30 miles of trail at Pinnacles.

“One thing we've been trying to transition toward is making Pinnacles a park for all seasons, for all people,” Moorer said, offering Prewett Point as an example. “It's not only accessible, it's also just a great view of the park.”

What month is best to visit Pinnacles National Park?

“If we're looking specifically for wildflowers, April would probably be the one … but we're also busier in April,” Moorer said.

On the flip side, he said August is the least visited time of year when temperatures can reach triple digits.

“Come prepared,” he said. “If (you’re) going to the caves, you want to bring a headlamp. If you're going to go up to the high peaks, make sure you bring enough water and snacks with you.”

Is Pinnacles National Park worth visiting?

Yes, but don’t expect it to be empty just because it’s among America’s 15 least visited national parks .

“You will be sorely mistaken if you come out on a Saturday and it's beautiful out,” Moorer said. “You're probably going to encounter a line of cars trying to do just what you're doing: enjoy the park.”

With limited parking available, Symons said visitors can sometimes wait an hour for a parking spot or be turned away on busy weekends.

“Monday through Friday, visitors have the caves and condors entirely to themselves,” he said. “Come during the week and skip the crowds!”

What Native tribes are tied to Pinnacles National Park?

“The group that would be most associated with the park would be the Chalon (Indian Nation) .” Moorer said. “North of here, we also have worked with the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band .”

He said there may be other Native tribes with historic ties. “It is an evolving story.”

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 29, 2024 / 5:01 AM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed before the collision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

10.jpg

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

It’s time to start thinking about your summer travel plans.

Whether you want to go across the globe or stay within the county, Google Flights has something for everyone on its list of the top destinations for summer 2024.

The list — which is based on the destinations most searched for by travelers within the U.S. on Google Flights for travel between June 1 and Aug. 31, according to The Points Guy — shows a lot of the trendy, expected locations, but it has some surprising outliers as well.

Paris

The most popular destination for summer 2024 is London while, perhaps surprisingly, Paris — which will host the upcoming Summer Olympics — only landed in the second-place spot.

Tokyo came in third, a jump from its eighth-place ranking in 2023.

Rounding out the top five is Rome at No. 4, and the first destination in the U.S. at No. 5 — New York.

London

Cancun might have been in second place last year, but it’s not as popular in 2024, dropping into sixth place.

Seventh, eighth and ninth place were all within the U.S. as well, with lots of travelers searching for Orlando, Las Vegas and Seattle, respectively.

tokyo

Finishing up the top 10 is Athens — but not the one in Georgia: Greece is a hot travel destination for this summer.

Other popular U.S. destinations in the hotter months include Los Angeles, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu, Denver and Boston.

Madrid and San Juan, Puerto Rico, both broke into the top 20 for the first time in spots 18 and 20, respectively.

Bridges are their nightmare. The Baltimore collapse made it a reality.

The collapse of the francis scott key bridge leads to a spike in anxiety for fearful travelers.

On Tuesday, while the country was transfixed on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, psychiatrist Elias Aboujaoude heard from two of his clients in California who each suffer from acrophobia, the fear of heights. They told the Stanford Medicine clinical professor they were trying to find out whether they had crossed the bridge on previous trips to the East Coast.

“It’s exacerbating their anxiety because it’s proving to them that their fear of bridges and their fear of heights is not unreasonable — that … this could have happened to them when they were on this bridge,” Aboujaoude said.

The horrifying scene of an out-of-control cargo ship taking down an 185-foot-tall bridge has triggered anxiety in people who struggle with several fears, including claustrophobia, amaxophobia (driving) and gephyrophobia (crossing bridges). It’s not a far leap to watch video of the collapse and picture yourself falling into the Patapsco River. For some, it feels like a bad dream came true.

Retired sales executive Dave Scarangella, 67, wrote on X on Tuesday that the Key Bridge collapse was his “recurring nightmare in real life.” He gets panic attacks on high bridges, he wrote — and more than a dozen people replied to share their own fears.

“I don’t know if it’s an innate fear of control, that the car will somehow take a right turn and dive into the water or something,” Scarangella said in an interview Wednesday, noting that the fear really grips him at the top. “It doesn’t make any sense.”

Taking lengths to avoid bridges

Bridges are a part of daily life for many. They factor into our holidays and vacations. People like Scarangella, of Ashburn, Va., may plot an elaborate course to circumvent an anxiety-inducing crossing.

Aboujaoude said one patient’s commute is three hours instead of the 30 minutes it would take to use a bridge. Scarangella said he has delegated bridge driving to colleagues and family members for years. He has avoided the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the Bay Bridge in Maryland. Family getaways are carefully planned.

“Wherever we choose to vacation won’t have a high bridge there,” he said. “And if we were to come across one by accident, we would look at a map and drive around it.”

At several bridges around the country, nervous drivers can hand their car keys over to a professional driver. The escort programs are run by a mix of bridge operators and private transportation companies.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia has been assisting nervous drivers since at least the 1990s. In 2006, the authorities formalized the free program, which is available year-round.

“We get just as many calls in the middle of the night as we do in the middle of the day,” said Corporal Spencer Parks.

Travelers in passenger cars should book in advance, preferably 24 hours before their arrival time. They will meet an emergency crew worker at either end of the bridge and pay the toll ($16 or $21, depending on the season). If a crew member is not available — their other responsibilities include driving wreckers and assisting in the toll booth — a police officer might take the wheel.

Edward Spencer, the director of operations and chief of police for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District, said 500 to 600 people request an escort each year. Spencer, who was answering the phone Tuesday night, said he highly doubts the Key Bridge collapse will cause an uptick in calls.

Drivers can get a hand crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland from the Kent Island Express , which promises to “let you relax and enjoy the ride and the view.” The service, which is not affiliated with the Maryland Transportation Authority, costs $40 in cash and $50 by credit card during regular business hours, according to the website. Drivers need to give at least an hour of advance notice.

Patty MacEwan, 60, used Kent Island Express a couple of years ago when she needed to attend a work meeting on the Eastern Shore. She said it was worth the cost. While short bridges made of concrete don’t bother her much, she has issues driving on bridges with grates where the water is visible and long bridges.

It was a windy day when she used the service, and “I thought to myself, ‘God, I’m so glad you did this,’” she said. “Because I’ve driven over that bridge before and it just is a white-knuckle experience for me.”

MacEwan, now retired from fundraising for nonprofits, called the company and scheduled a meeting time, then followed up when she was nearby. A young woman got into the Chevrolet Spark at a spot near the bridge; another employee followed them over, and the driver pulled over near a business on the other side, where MacEwan took over again.

“Very efficient,” said MacEwan, who lived in Alexandria, Va., at the time and now lives in New York state. She remembers complimenting the driver on how well she was doing, even if she wasn’t technically watching what was going on. “I probably closed my eyes,” she said.

The 440-foot-high Delaware Memorial Bridge , which spans the Delaware River, offers a similar program. Travelers, who should call 10 to 15 minutes ahead of time, will receive directions to a safe pull-off where they can wait for an officer. Dispatcher Dionna Glasglow said they typically receive a bump in calls over the holidays and on days with extreme weather — excessively windy or rainy or spectacularly sunny.

“Summer is a huge peak time for us,” she said.

The service is free, but the car owner must pay the $5 toll.

The roughly five-mile-long Mackinac Bridge, which connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, has offered an assistance program to nervous drivers since the 1980s. Partly to blame for those nerves: high winds, which can prompt advisories and closures — and cause the bridge to move.

At all hours, any day of the week, drivers can make a request for a bridge staffer to drive their car across the “Mighty Mac.”

The service was suspended in the early days of the pandemic, but it returned in late 2021. By then, officials had reviewed the cost of the formerly free program and decided users needed to pay. The cost now: $10 plus toll per trip, increasing to $15 in 2025. The average cost to provide the service is about $33 per trip, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

Overcoming fears through exposure

The fear of bridges can be a singular phobia or a tangle of anxieties, such as driving, heights, loss of control, tight spaces or mistrust of infrastructure. The type of bridge could also trigger a panic attack.

“For some people, it’s how high the bridges are. For other people, it’s the structure of the bridge, or the length, or whether it’s over water,” said Martin Antony , a psychology professor at Toronto Metropolitan University. “Of course, there are people who are afraid of all bridges.”

Robert Dupont , a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University, said he did not encounter patients who feared a bridge collapse. They were afraid of their own behavior while driving across a bridge — like jumping off it.

“It’s a common phobia,” he said, adding that “it’s one of the phobias that people keep a secret. Driving across a bridge becomes something they won’t do. This [collapse] may prompt people to confront it again.”

Antony, who wrote a book about overcoming fears, said the most effective and evidence-based therapy involves exposure. He takes his clients to bridges, where the patient or a friend of the individual will repeatedly drive across the structure. The idea is to exorcise the fear by normalizing the experience.

“We will go back and forth long enough for the people to learn that whatever they are predicting isn’t going to happen,” he said. “Their fear comes down over time, usually.”

“The only treatment is to do it,” DuPont said. “You’ve got to get on the bridge and do it often. … The peace lies on the other side of the fear.”

For the cognitive segment of therapy, Aboujaoude uses rationalization techniques, such as pointing out how his client’s worst fears rarely materialize. For the behavioral portion of treatment, he will safely and gradually expose them to their fears through virtual reality and other technologies.

He said bridge escort programs are a “Band-Aid,” but not a long-term solution. The traveler won’t always have this service or the time or logistics to circumvent bridges. To expel their fears, they need to face them head-on.

“A small minority of patients with acrophobia actually seek treatment,” he said. “Most of them deal with it through avoidance.”

Scarangella, the retired executive in Virginia, said he has watched videos of drives over bridges “in the interest of trying to cure myself,” and found his heart rate elevated after watching. He’s skeptical more treatment would help.

“The only thing a therapist could really do for me is drive me over the bridge,” he said.

Marlene Cimons contributed to this report.

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers recovered the bodies of two construction workers who died , while finding other vehicles trapped and probably containing the other victims, officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . The entire crew aboard the container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent mayday call. It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spanned the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.

No water bottle has gained the level of fame that Stanley’s 40-ounce Quencher Tumbler has, making it a highly sought-after vessel that sells out quickly. Rightfully so — the stainless steel tumbler keeps water incredibly cold for hours, famously fits in the cup holder of your car, and comes in so many seasonal colors.

And today, the brand just dropped its exclusive Sunshine Vibes Stanley collection at Target, which includes the shopper-favorite brand in bold, spring- and summer-ready hues. Whether you’re in the market for a new water bottle or want to add some fun new colors to your on-the-go collection, shop the new launch now while products are still in stock.

Stanley 40-Ounce Quencher Tumbler

The brand’s most popular water bottle, the 40-Ounce Stainless Steel H2.0 Flowstate Quencher Tumbler , now comes in four new colors: amethyst, aqua, sunshine, and summer plaid, a pattern which consists of its other shades. Shoppers love the water bottle for road trips, workout classes, and long flights, and the new one features the same lid that allows you to sip directly from the bottle, use a straw, or secure it closed to prevent splashes.

Stanley 20-Ounce Stainless Steel IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler

While the larger tumbler is designed to be an on-the-go water bottle, Stanley has multiple travel-friendly bottles that are also included in the new color drop. If a smaller tumbler makes more sense for you, grab the 20-Ounce IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler in aqua, cobalt, marigold, and poppy. And for a water bottle that can be thrown in your bag without fear of leaking, opt for the 20-Ounce All Day Slim Bottle , which comes in four striped patterns and has two openings at the top to fill it easily with water and ice.

Stanley 20-Ounce Stainless Steel All Day Slim Bottle

In addition to the updated colors, Stanley’s new launch also includes a patio collection featuring pitchers , flasks , coolers , and large-capacity drink dispensers . If summer travel looks like trips to the beach or camping in the mountains, the 16-Quart Easy-Carry Outdoor Cooler is an ideal option to hold up to 21 cans, and it comes in three colors: azure, lilac, and pomelo.

Stanley 16-Quart Plastic Easy-Carry Outdoor Cooler

If past Stanley collections are any indication, this new launch is likely to sell out while you’re reading this. Keep scrolling through for more color options, and snag your favorites from Stanley’s Sunshine Vibes Collection while they’re still in stock.
