  • amarsh3445 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfect way to spend the day Spent the day at the Cabanas at Chankanaab on our recent stay in Cozumel and had a great time. We were escorted from the front gate to our personal cabana that was perfect for 3 of us. The cabana was clean and very comfortable loungers and a nice seating area in the shade with a fan for coolness. Steps away from the water for some great snorkeling. The staff checked on us frequently but were not intrusive but always close by if you needed anything from the bar or had any questions. We had pre-booked massages and the spa staff came to confirm the reservation and tell us what time they would return for us and they were right on time. Peter, the owner, also personally came by to introduce himself and see if there was anything he could get us. Bathrooms were close and clean, the area was well maintained and not crowded and had plenty of seating areas in the sun or shade. It was a great way to spend the day and also highly recommend if you are on a cruise ship to rent for the day and easy to get a taxi to get you there and the staff will call a taxi to get you back to your ship. Will definitely be back. Read more Written 24 August 2023
  • tiffanytL8506TI 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Paradise The Cabanas at Chankanaab in Cozumel was a highlight of our cruise! We only paid $10 more apiece than if we had just gotten admission to Chankanaab and it was fun to have our own private cabana. Dahlia, our server, was super attentive, quickly brought food, drinks, clean towels and snorkel equipment. When it was time to leave, she had a taxi waiting to take us back to the ship. We enjoyed the complimentary fruit, chips and guacamole. For lunch, we had fish tacos — spicy and flavorful without being too spicy! All of us, ages 5, 8, 11 up to 60, snorkeled here and saw soooo many beautiful fish. We brought our own face masks but used the fins from the resort. My son saw a manta ray and the coral looked healthy. We were able to hold sea urchins and snails from the tidal pools, too. The kids swam out to the floats. Read more Written 30 May 2023
  • cynthia c 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Not to be missed; The best decision we made this cruise was to make a reservation at Cabana Beach ChanKannab. So happy we found this place. We reserved on line about a month before our trip and reserved VIP 10. It was a slice of heaven. The food and drinks were amazing. Everything was fresh and great ingredients. The massages were out of this world as we opted for couples massage . Beatriz and Alma are true professionals. Peter the owner was on hand . He is always looking to make sure you have a great time. Snorkel and fins all included . Just book it now!! Very close to port so don't worry about getting back. They will call your cab for you too. Have fun and enjoy.. Read more Written 27 January 2023
  • jennifer c 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles JUST Go! Beautiful and peaceful! This place is awesome. We rented the VIP cabana. 4 of us for the day enjoyed our little slice of paradise! Water is cold, and deep! So I don’t recommend it for younger kids or inexperienced swimmers. Saw lots of divers heading down the steps to the DEEP water! Beautiful area with snorkel gear available during your visit. Admission to the actual park included in the price. Our cabana boy kept our drinks refilled and brought us towels. Add a massage to your visit! Quiet little massage area with the waves crashing down in front of you while you’re rubbed down was a bonus! I can’t say enough good things about this beautiful little area on Cozumel island. We will visit again on our next trip! Our cabana even had a private showers so we were able to shower off and change into our dinner clothes before leaving. Cabana Beach closes at 6, so by 5:45 we were paid and headed to dinner. • tofuhappyhour 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great private escape with an amazing reef What a great place to spend the day, our own private little cabana and white sand covered front “yard” the owner stopped by and was really nice you can tell there is a lot of love put into making the cabana site a little paradise! The coral reef system in front of the site is amazing - tons of beautiful fish and waving fan coral. And on top of this the price of a cabana rental includes access to Chankanaab Park which has fun activities and a beautiful lagoon! Read more Written 30 June 2022

  • 180gingerc 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to spend the day snorkeling I travel to Cozumel multiple times a year. My sister and I spent the day at the Cabana Beach club to enjoy snorkeling at Chankanaab. The cabanas are a good size and very clean. There is separation between cabanas so you have some privacy. For lunch we ordered smoothies and hamburgers. The food was very good and the service was outstanding. They provided towels, water a fruit plate and choice of hummus or guacamole. It was a short stroll to the park near the waters edge or you can snorkel in front of the beach club. We will definitely be back soon and keep this place as one of our Cozumel favorite places. • csniners 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful place! We recommend getting the whole package and making sure Martin is your guide! We did the museum guided tour, the chocolate making tour and lunch. All in all we spent about 3 hours, but we could have stayed much longer. Martin is a wealth of knowledge and he is happy to answer questions while teaching TONS about Mexican culture, history and geography. Just an amazing guide! He also took great photos for us throughout the park... above and beyond service for sure. The chocolate was a delight! We made our own bars while we were spoiled with chocolate drinks (they can make with or without alcohol) and treats! We were given homemade mole and chocolate dipped candies. Lunch was also amazing! Perfectly seasoned grilled chicken “street” tacos with fresh guacamole, salsa and corn chips... I’m still full! Please don’t miss this tour! Honestly, we didn’t have high expectations, but having been to this port town before we didn’t want to spend the whole time at the shops... so we went here, based on all the TA comments and were very pleased. It’s a clean and fun place, the little museum was expertly narrated by our tour guide. Making chocolate was fun and informative. The traditional pole demonstration was amazing. The food was pretty good too. We skipped the tequila part of the tour, but I bet it was good too. A great half day and good value in a major ‘tourist trap’ town! Read more Written 28 April 2020

Difference Between Tequila and Mezcal

Blue agave plant at sunset

Many people incorrectly assume tequila and mezcal are the same thing. While they are both distilled spirits made from the agave plant, there is a distinct difference between the two.

Tequila is made, by law, only from one type of agave – blue agave. It must be produced in Mexico in designated areas to legally carry the name tequila.

It is made from the cooked agave heart and fermented with specific yeast. Tequila must be distilled to at least 38% alcohol in order to carry its name.

Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from more than 30 varieties of agave. Not only blue agave, but also Agave angustifolia, known as Espadín.

It is produced in eight Mexican states and the rules are more relaxed than those for tequila production, allowing producers to experiment with different recipes and techniques. Mezcal can be distilled to anywhere between 38-55% alcohol.

In terms of taste, tequila tends to be smoother and less smoky than mezcal. Mezcal is made in small batches with a distinct flavor that includes earthy notes and a hint of smoke.

Many people consider mezcal to be the best-tasting tequila. After my tequila tour, I have to agree.

The differences between the two are not only in the production process but also in their heritage. Tequila has been around for centuries, while mezcal is a much more recent creation.

Because Cozumel is not in one of the approved regions to produce tequila, Cozumel tequila is actually mezcal.

Both have quickly become popular choices in the world of spirits, with each offering distinct and unique flavors. Regardless of which you choose, both tequila and mezcal are sure to leave you with an unforgettable experience.

About Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island with a big personality. The main town is called San Miguel de Cozumel, but most people just call the entire thing Cozumel.

Cozumel tends to be overshadowed by Cancun. Actually, the two locations are very different and offer different types of vacations . Cancun is more of a party spot while Cozumel is more laid back.

Both Cancun and Cozumel have great water sports, but Cozumel (in my opinion) has better snorkeling .

Cozumel has an international airport with direct flights from several U.S. cities. Many people fly into Cancun for their Cozumel vacation. It’s often a cheaper alternative. Getting to Cozumel from Cancun takes a couple hours but isn’t difficult.

Cozumel is a very safe destination . Since tourism is the only industry on the island, the police are dedicated to maintaining Cozumel’s safety record.
