July 7: Bob Dylan live on Wembley in London 1984 – Highway 61 Revisited

bob dylan european tour 1984

Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son” Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on” God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?” God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but The next time you see me comin’ you better run” Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?” God says, “Out on Highway 61”

…when Dylan bounded out onstage later that evening, wearing a black frock coat and sporting a shock of wild, curly hair, he looked, from a distance, like nothing less than a holy man possessed. And from the moment he and his band (ex-Faces‘ keyboard player Ian McLagan, ex-Stone the Crows drummer Colin Allen, bassist Greg Sutton and ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor) broke into an electrifying Chuck Berryish version of “Highway 61,” it was clear that Dylan was once again a devoted rock & roller. Moreover, his voice – full of passionate declamations and dramatic vocal leaps, and displaying an emotional palette that ranged from proud anger to unabashed tenderness – immediately brought his audience back to the days of Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde. – Rolling Stone Magazine

Dylan played some of the biggest and best known European music venues including Schaerbeek Football Stadium in Brussels, Belgium, Ullevi Stadion in Gothenburg, Sweden, St. James Park in Newcastle, England, Wembley Stadium in London , England, Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland.

His band included ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor on guitar, ex-Faces’ keyboard player Ian McLagan, drummer Colin Allen and bassist Greg Sutton.

Dylan was joined by several major musicians on the tour including Carlos Santana ( all concerts ; Santana was an opening act), Joan Baez (Hamburg, Munich and Copenhagen), Hugues Aufray (Paris and Grenoble), Pino Daniele (Milan 24 June 1984),  Van Morrison (Paris, London and County Meath), Eric Clapton ( London ), Chrissie Hynde ( London ), Bono (County Meath), Leslie Dowdall (County Meath) and Steve Wickham (County Meath).

Real Live was released in the winter 1984 which documented Dylan’s 1984 summer, released by Columbia Records. Six songs from the album were recorded at Wembley Stadium on July 7, two songs were recorded at St. James Park on July 5 and another two were recorded at Slane Castle, Ireland on July 8 – Wikipedia

Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose Welfare Department they wouldn’t give him no clothes He asked poor Howard where can I go Howard said there’s only one place I know Sam said tell me quick man I got to run Ol’ Howard just pointed with his gun And said that way down on Highway 61 Well Mack the Finger said to Louie the King I got forty red, white and blue shoestrings And a thousand telephones that don’t ring Do you know where I can get rid of these things And Louie the King said let me think for a minute son And he said yes I think it can be easily done Just take everything down to Highway 61 Now the fifth daughter on the twelfth night Told the first father that things weren’t right My complexion she said is much too white He said come here and step into the light, he says hmm you’re right Let me tell the second mother this has been done But the second mother was with the seventh son And they were both out on Highway 61 Now the rovin’ gambler he was very bored He was tryin’ to create a next world war He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor He said I never engaged in this kind of thing before But yes I think it can be very easily done We’ll just put some bleachers out in the sun And have it on Highway 61

Born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, Dylan was originally known as Bob Zimmerman. In his time at the University of Minnesota, he became captivated by the folk singer Woody Guthrie and started to perform at coffee houses near the university campus. In this transformative period, he decided to change his last name to Dylan, a tribute to the poet Dylan Thomas and a symbol of his artistic evolution and aspirations.

A week of entertainment news in your in-box. We find the news you need to know, so you don't have to.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dylan shattered preconceived notions with his demonstration that songs with overtly political themes could still achieve remarkable commercial success. His timeless music continues to resonate with audiences today, just as powerfully as it did when he first recorded them several decades ago.

With tens of millions of albums sold, over 500 songs penned and recorded by more than 2,000 artists and a global presence on stages across the world, Dylan has set an unmatched standard for the art of lyric writing.

Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson Unite for Epic ‘Outlaw’ Summer Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Willie Nelson is hitting the road this summer on his annual Outlaw Music Festival Tour, and Bob Dylan is joining for all 26 shows. They’ll be accompanied on the first leg by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, and John Mellencamp on the second. Billy Strings, Brittney Spencer, Celisse, and Southern Avenue will also be playing with them at various stops along the way. It kicks off June 21 in Alpharetta, Georgia.

“This year’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour promises to be the biggest and best yet with this lineup of legendary artists,” Nelson said in a statement. “I am thrilled to get back on the road again with my family and friends playing the music we love for the fans we love.”

Dylan joined up with the Outlaw Festival for a couple of shows in 2017, but this is the first time he’s participated in the entire tour. His friendship with Nelson, however, goes back several decades. They co-wrote the song “Heartland” together in 1993.

In the summer of 2004, Nelson and Dylan played minor league baseball parks together all across America. In 2009, they brought John Mellencamp along for the ride when they repeated the concept. Dylan rarely shares the stage with other performers, but he frequently brought Nelson in 2004 for duets on “I Shall Be Released,” “Heartland,” and “Milk Cow Blues.” They first played together in 1976 when Nelson came out during a Rolling Thunder Revue stop in Houston for “Gotta Travel On.”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

James and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy did have the chance to play with Dylan a few times though. They were brought out near the end of his set for the traditional folk song “Twelve Gates to the City,” and the Band’s “The Weight.” “His bass player, Tony [Garnier], did all the communicating with us as far as who was going to sing what verse,” James said. “They’d change keys literally a minute before we went on, like, ‘Bob wants to do it in E flat.’ It was really cool, and something I’ll be able to tell the grandkids about.”

If we’re lucky this summer, we might get to see Dylan, Nelson, Robert Plant, and Alison Krauss team up for a few songs. Plant played “Girl From the North Country” at many shows in the early 2000s. This could be his chance to perform it with the guy that wrote it.

Bob Dylan’s intimate Clearwater concert got ‘rough and rowdy’

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

CLEARWATER — There was no opener on Tuesday night. No lengthy stage banter. No frills. This was a Bob Dylan show, after all — the fact that the singer was breathing the same air as his 2,000 or so fans in Ruth Eckerd Hall was magic enough.

The curtain rose inside the theater promptly at 8 p.m., and there was living legend Dylan behind his piano. This is where he stayed for the duration of his roughly 100-minute set, plunking away on the keys as our gravel-voiced troubadour.

If your seat was close enough, you could appreciate the funky details on Dylan’s sparkly black jacket. Otherwise, no such luck. There wasn’t a big screen to show Dylan’s slick outfit, his tousled fluff of hair or his facial expressions as he played. Guests had to lock their phones inside pouches before entering the venue, so there was no hope of zooming in for a better view. Even binoculars were verboten.

When sharing space with an icon, you want to get as close as possible. But Dylan, enigmatic as ever, barely addressed his crowd. He let his lyrics do the talking instead.

Sorry to fans of “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Blowin’ In The Wind.” This was not a greatest hits celebration. Dylan, at 82, is still making some of his best music, and he had plenty to share.

Since this was the “Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour,” Dylan devoted much of the setlist to the 2020 record with the same name — his 39th studio album. The delightful new songs, bluesy and rich, took us on a journey “Crossing the Rubicon,” then dipping down to the southern tip of Florida.

“Key West is the place to go, down by the Gulf of Mexico,” Dylan warbled. “Beyond the sea, beyond the shifting sand, Key West is the gateway key to innocence and purity.”

As he croaked and crooned, his audience absorbed the fresh material with reverence. Some nodded along. Others wiped away tears. It was a diverse group, from women who spoke about seeing him perform before he changed his name from Robert Zimmerman to younger dudes with Bob-like curls and wide-brimmed hats of their own. The crowd offered warm applause, frequently standing to cheer before plopping right back down. They howled halfway through the show when Dylan finally leaned in and trilled on his harmonica.

For the most part, Dylan plowed through his performance as if he was just jamming with his buddies. He tumbled swiftly through nearly 20 songs, occasionally offering a gruff “thank you” or rising behind his baby grand when the crowd got really loud. His most animated body language was reserved for his talented five-piece band, when he frantically waved a hand or two behind his back to signal to them.

Like he did on the 2023 record “Shadow Kingdom,” Dylan shared updated versions of his older hits. “To Be Alone with You” and “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” eliciting raucous responses. The biggest treat of the night: a cinematic take on “When I Paint My Masterpiece” that would fit right into a Western thriller. It featured a haunting double bass line and violin riff over the hiss of brushes against drums.
