Where to Eat

Where to stay, when to visit.

The Fountain of Youth is calling your name—just like it called to the Spanish colonizers more than 500 years ago. Maybe it's those gorgeous beaches, or maybe it is something in the water. Either way, there is lots to explore in this charming city on Florida's Atlantic coast. Check out this travel guide for St. Augustine before your next Florida trip.

What to Know About Florida's Historic Coast

Most people don't realize St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States. (It was preceded by Puerto Rican colonies; Pensacola, which was destroyed in 1559; and Fort Caroline in Jacksonville, Florida, destroyed in 1565.) Ponce de León claimed "La Florida" for Spain in 1513, decades before the Jamestown colony of Virginia, and long before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. Over the centuries, many cultures have called the city on Florida's Historic Coast home, including Native American, Spanish, British, French, and African.

Where to Find Historical Icons

Explore a historic fort.

One of the city's most architecturally significant structures, and also the oldest masonry fort in the country, the waterfront Castillo de San Marcos is truly a sight to behold. Built in the 17th century, the national monument is made of native coquina stones, which absorbed or deflected enemy projectiles, giving the Spanish an advantage. Climb to the top of the fort to see the incredible views of the city and waterfront.

Visit a Free-Slave Settlement

Just two miles north of Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Mose Historic State Park is the location of the first legally sanctioned free African settlement in North America. Learn about this important 40-acre historical site at the interactive museum, and stick around to spot bald eagles and blue herons.

Sip From the Fountain of Youth

Take a sip from the legendary fountain at Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park , which tells about the birth of St. Augustine, as well as the Timucuan people who preceded the Spanish by thousands of years. Walk through the lushly landscaped park (dogs are also allowed) to sample water from the bubbling fountains. Stroll the 15 acres of waterfront while you're there.

Discover Flagler College's Historic Past

Fast forward to the early 20th century, when oil tycoon Henry Flagler developed St. Augustine into one of the country's first winter resort destinations. Paying homage to the city's past, the millionaire developer built the stunning Hotel Ponce de Leon (now Flagler College), with its opulent 80-foot domed ceiling and Spanish Renaissance architecture. In 1967, the hotel closed its doors, and the building opened as Flagler College in 1968. While the property is an active college campus, visitors can take a historic tour to learn about the architecture, stand in the domed grand lobby, and view 79 Tiffany windows in the dining room.

St. Augustine Lighthouse is rumored to be haunted too, but during the day it's perfectly ghost-free (they only come out at night, right?) and a gorgeous site to see. Halfway between downtown St. Augustine and the beaches of Anastasia Island, it's the oldest navigational site in North America and home to a maritime museum. If you're feeling energetic, climb 219 steps to the top of the lighthouse for incredible views.

Where to Find the Best Beaches

Kick off your shoes on unspoiled beaches.

While Florida's Historic Coast is most famous for its storied past, leave plenty of time to kick back on the area's unspoiled beaches. Home to the popular St. Johns County Ocean and Fishing Pier , St. Augustine Beach offers a large oceanfront pavilion, splash and play park, sand volleyball courts, and plenty of seaside restaurants like Salt Life Food Shack .

Get in Touch with Nature

Just north of St. Augustine Beach, Anastasia State Park is a pristine stretch of sand with abundant wildlife and natural tidal marshes. There's a coquina quarry where laborers mined stones to build the majestic Castillo de San Marcos and other historic structures downtown.

In northern St. Johns County, Ponte Vedra Beach is famous for its historic and luxurious resort town feel. It's also the site where, according to navigational records, Ponce de Leon first set foot on Florida sand. View the exact spot at the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve , with more than 76,000 acres of protected coastal dunes, tidal lagoons, and forests. It's a gorgeous location to hike, bike, fish, kayak, picnic, and ride horseback. There are over nine miles of nature trails, as well as a prehistoric earthen burial mound, and 60 additional archaeological sites.

Tour the Food Scene

There are plenty of options to taste local flavors along Florida's Historic Coast. Culinary tours allow you to sample cuisine from the many destinations that have influenced the city's history, including Spain, France, Italy, Asia, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Check out The Tasting Tours and City Walks Food and Wine Tours . And you'll want to tour the St. Augustine Distillery , where you can sample small batch spirits in a restored ice plant dating back to 1917.

Dine with a Water View

Two crowd favorites equally famous for their water views and oyster bars are Meehan's Irish Pub & Seafood House in the heart of the historic district, and Cap's On The Water in Vilano Beach, which has killer sunset views of the Intracoastal Waterway to the west. The waterfront Aunt Kate's is a family-owned eatery with a tradition of serving Menorcan dishes, fresh seafood, and famous clam chowder for more than 100 years. The family's history dates back to Menorca island residents brought to New Smyrna as indentured servants. They fled the failed English Colony to safety in St. Augustine in 1768. And while the original restaurant succumbed to fire, the new building serves up the same great recipes right on the water.

St Augustine

The oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the US, St Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565. Today, its 144-block National Historic Landmark District is a major tourist destination. For the most part, St Augustine exudes charm and maintains its integrity, although there's no denying the presence of some tacky tourist traps: miniature theme parks, tour operators at almost every turn and horse-drawn carriages clip-clopping past townsfolk dressed in period costume.

Why Go To St. Augustine

No matter where you go in St. Augustine, odds are you'll stand face to face with American history. Founded by the Spaniards in 1565, this town in northeastern Florida is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the U.S. Alongside narrow cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, you'll find Romanesque Revival-style buildings, many of which were designed by railroad and oil tycoon Henry Flagler, who played a key role in developing St. Augustine and the rest of Florida's east coast. With so much history, it should come as no surprise that St. Augustine also has a penchant for the paranormal: Many of the town's top attractions , which are believed to be haunted by Spanish settlers and original inhabitants, tout nighttime ghost tours .

Though the main draw here is the abundance of landmarks that date back to the Spanish occupation, the Ancient City also offers various boutiques, eateries, live music venues and art galleries. Travelers with children should check out the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum and the St. Augustine Wild Reserve . Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Lightner Museum 's eclectic collection, while shopaholics cannot pass up a chance to peruse the boutiques on St. George Street . And once you're ready to relax, grab your gear and head to the beach . As with many coastal Florida towns, St. Augustine offers prime access to the Atlantic Ocean and year-round sunshine.

St. Augustine Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Augustine is between March and May. During this time, you'll find fewer people, comfortable temperatures and low hotel and airfare rates. Crowds are typically at their largest from June to August, while temperatures can drop into the 40s between December and February. You'll also enjoy favorable temperatures and score accommodation deals from September to November, though these months fall within the Atlantic hurricane season, which starts in June and lasts until the end of November.

Weather in St. Augustine

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

Pack accordingly Like other historic American destinations, St. Augustine is filled with cobblestone streets, so plan to pack comfortable walking shoes. You'll also want to bring a light jacket if you visit during winter or sunscreen and an umbrella if your trip falls between June and November – the Atlantic hurricane season.

Bring an extra bag Whether you plan on buying a few items at the St. Augustine Premium Outlets or antiques and homemade souvenirs on St. George Street , you'll want space to store your goods.

Bed down in central St. Augustine If you want to stay near the bulk of St. Augustine's attractions, book a hotel in Old Town or the Spanish Quarter. Depending on where you hang your hat, you'll be within steps of St. George Street's shops and sights like the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum and the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument .

How to Save Money in St. Augustine

Book a trolley tour package For three days of trolley rides and access to popular attractions like the Old Jail , Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park and the Lightner Museum , purchase one of Old Town Trolley Tours ' sightseeing packages. You can save as much as around $10 per person, depending on the package you book.

Visit in the spring St. Augustine's peak season is from June to August. To avoid the summer season's high prices and crowds without sacrificing on weather, plan your visit between March and May.

Consider driving to and from the airport  Though you'll find it easy to get around St. Augustine on foot, via a trolley tour or by bus, the closest major airport – Jacksonville International Airport – sits more than 50 miles away. Since public transportation between St. Augustine and the airport is not available, renting a car on arrival and departure days will help you avoid high transportation costs.

What to Eat

St. Augustine sits by three rivers, a lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, so you'll find plenty of top-notch seafood served at the town's restaurants. Florida seafood specialties found on St. Augustine restaurant menus include grouper, shrimp and mahi-mahi. To sample some of the region's fresh seafood, pay a visit to popular eateries like Sunset Grille and O'Steen's Restaurant .

Though you'll find casual American fare at most St. Augustine restaurants, several internationally influenced cafes, bakeries and eateries are available as well. Some of the town's most popular restaurants include Casa Benedetto's Ristorante – an Italian dining establishment – and Mango Mango's Caribbean Grill & Bar . And on St. George Street , diners can enjoy Cuban classics like pan con bistec (steak and grilled onion sandwiches) and papa rellenas (stuffed fried potatoes) at The Cuban Cafe & Bakery , Spanish tapas at Columbia Restaurant and British-inspired pub fare at the Bull & Crown Publick House .

Getting Around St. Augustine

The best way to get around St. Augustine is on foot and by trolley. Most of St. Augustine's top attractions are located within the town's historic downtown, while other sights like the Old Jail and Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park can be reached by the local sightseeing trolley. To get to and from Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), the area's closest major airport, visitors can drive or take a taxi. The Northeast Florida Regional Airport (UST) is a closer option, about 5 miles north of the city, but offers very limited flight options through just a few lesser-known carriers. The city's Sunshine Bus Company can be used for half of the journey, but travelers will need to use two or more Jacksonville Transportation Authority buses for the other part of their trip. The Sunshine Bus Co. can also be used to get around central St. Augustine. Driving within St. Augustine is not recommended due to limited street parking.

Visit St. Augustine for a healthy mix of historic architecture and pristine ocean views.

The charm, the history, the beaches, the atmosphere. The combination produces something you won’t find anywhere in the U.S. And it’s something you must experience yourself in order to understand.

We instantly agreed that we had planned too short of time in St. Augustine. It’s a city that you just want to stroll around to see what you discover. What hidden gem will delight you? Next time, we are going to do it right!

This travel guide to St. Augustine has everything you need including Things to do in St. Augustine Free things to do in St. Augustine Things to do in St. Augustine at Night Fun Things to do in St. Augustine for couples Romantic Things to do in St. Augustine Unique Things to do in St. Augustine

About St. Augustine

Known as the oldest city in the U.S., St. Augustine feels old. But not in a stuffy, museum sort of way. Rather, it feels magical. There’s something in the air here and it captivates you.

Established by the Spanish in the 1600s, St. Augustine retains a lot of these original structures. But even the architecture from other periods throughout the city is astonishing.

Weather in St. Augustine

Being Florida, it never gets properly cold in St. Augustine. However, the coldest months are December through February with average temperatures around 70°F (not really cold at all, right?). Even better, these months have the lowest humidity levels and least amount of rainfall.

During summer, from May to September, you can count on hot weather and lots of humidity. But it is Florida, so you can cool off at the beach.

WHERE TO STAY IN ST. AUGUSTINE

St. George Inn : Exceptional, wonderful, fabulous. Just a few words that automatically come to mind when I think of the St. George Inn. You are in for a treat when you stay here. You are well taken care of by the staff and treated more than family.

And location wise you can’t get any better than this. You’re right in the middle of the action and are steps away from the heart of the old town. So, you don’t need a car for your stay.

With only 25 guests rooms, you can expect personalized service. And many of the rooms offer views overlooking the City Gate and Castillo de San Marcos. Each is comfortable and spacious. Plus, they serve an incredible complimentary breakfast. And, if you’re looking for one of the most romantic things to do in St. Augustine, you have to stay at the St. George Inn.

st augustine florida travel and leisure

Collector Inn : Also very lovely, is the Collector Inn and it sits on the edge of St. Augustine’s old town. And you won’t find a more unique place to stay with its mixture of art and history. But do note, that this upscale hotel is for adults only.

The inn is made up of nine different historical homes, each from a different time period. History lovers will adore this. And every room in the entire complex is different. So, you can stay many times and have a different style of room each time. How wonderful is that?

And the staff takes care of you in every way from cocktails to your room to even the complimentary breakfast brought to you. With all of that, it’s another top romantic thing to do in St. Augustine. And why it’s rated as one of the top hotels in St. Augustine.

Casa Monica: This is the fancier of the accommodation options, and we recommend it if inns are your cup of tea. This special boutique hotel enfolds you in history and transports you to another world. And this is just as soon as you step into the lobby!

Right in the heart of the historic district of St. Augustine, all of the top things to do in St. Augustine are just a walking distance away. With a friendly staff and amazing amenities, you can guarantee a memorable visit when you stay at Casa Monica.

WHERE TO EAT IN ST. AUGUSTINE

Sprout Kitchen : Super cute grab and go vibe that serves mostly vegan, plant based, and organic options. Located in the old town down a quiet side street, their cold press juices hit the spot on a summer day. Then again, their super fresh smoothies are a treat all on their own.

The Floridian: Another great option for those looking for a great laid back west coast vibe and delicious vegan options. Specializing in southern food with a modern flare, you are in for a world of flavor when dining at The Floridian. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

st augustine florida travel and leisure

Odd Birds: Not your typical place nor experience. But you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu here. However, Odd Birds is known more for their bar which serves a rotating cocktail and beer choices from around the world. And, the decor lets you know that you are for something a little bit different…but still yummy.

Catch 27 : This is a great place to grab fresh local seafood. With everything made from scratch, it’s no wonder the place fills up quickly (and reservations are not accepted). No matter what you end up ordering, you cannot leave until you try their deviled eggs. Your taste buds will thank you.

Micheal’s : Wondering dinner options for dinner with a more upscale vibe while still in the old town area. We recommend doing the chef’s menu if available (reservations recommended) and ask to sit on the patio if the weather is nice. The atmosphere is lovely.

Blue Hen : Located outside the old town area (Lincolnville), but worth the trek out for the tantalizing farm to table offerings. You will be hard pressed to find another restaurant that serves a southern breakfast quite like the Blue Hen. Be sure to come hungry!

Maple Street Biscuit Company : If you love a good homemade breakfast, you must try the biscuits here. Although, you’ll want to visit early as once you have their biscuits, you’ll be craving them every day. It’s great for brunch too!

The Ice Plan t: If you’re looking for a casual place with a laid back vibe with historical touches, You can expect a tasty meal and outstanding service. And they even have vegan and gluten free options, too.

THINGS TO DO IN ST AUGUSTINE:

Being the oldest city in the U.S., you can expect a lot of wonderful historic places to explore. But, there’s also some amazing outdoor activities to enjoy. With such varying options, you can be sure that there are lots of things to do in St. Augustine.

This travel guide to St. Augustine has everything you need including Things to do in St. Augustine Free things to do in St. Augustine Things to do in St. Augustine at Night Fun Things to do in St. Augustine for couples Romantic Things to do in St. Augustine Unique Things to do in St. Augustine

Tasting tours (with spirits) food tour : The spirits scene is in St. Augustine is certainly one to write home about (including gin, vodka, and bourbon). We highly recommend checking out the distillery tours:

  • Saint Augustine Distillery
  • Chocolate Tasting Tour
  • Saint Sebastian Winery

Take the trolley around the city: Such a wonderful way to explore St. Augustine, and saves you time and money from having to take a cab around. There’s 23 stops for you to hop on and off at and a fascinating narrative of the city to keep you interested when on board.

Tour a Spanish Fort : It’s impossible to escape history contained in the impenetrable Castillo de San Marcos. It’s massive fortifications are unmissable and a signature of St. Augustine through the centuries. Being the only remaining military fort from the 1700s in the US, it’s definitely one of the top things to do in St. Augustine.

Turn back time at the Fountain of Youth : We’ve all heard about the Fountain of Youth. And here in St. Augustine, it may just be real! Ponce de Leon discovered a natural spring on the site and it may be the Fountain of Youth. But here’s the thing- we’re not quite sure if this works or not, but it’s worth testing, and seeing some peacocks along the way.

This travel guide to St. Augustine has everything you need including Things to do in St. Augustine Free things to do in St. Augustine Things to do in St. Augustine at Night Fun Things to do in St. Augustine for couples Romantic Things to do in St. Augustine Unique Things to do in St. Augustine

Even if you end up not slowing down time, the Fountain of Youth is an interactive experience where you can learn about the first Spanish settlers and what their life was like. There’s also a wonderful river walk and stunning views from the Observation Tower.

Go back to school: We highly recommend taking a tour at the Flagler College. The architecture at this former hotel turned Liberal Arts College is stunning. It’s unbelievable that such rich architecture has survived the centuries. The tour also gives you a glimpse of how the hospitality industry functioned for the upper class during the golden age of tourism. The 60-minute tour will not disappoint.

This travel guide to St. Augustine has everything you need including Things to do in St. Augustine Free things to do in St. Augustine Things to do in St. Augustine at Night Fun Things to do in St. Augustine for couples Romantic Things to do in St. Augustine Unique Things to do in St. Augustine. Also, be sure to visit Flagler College

Enjoy an Eclectic Art Collection : If nothing in St. Augustine seems ordinary, then wait until you visit the Lightner Museum. This fantastic collection borders on traditional museum and oddball collections. On one hand you have vintage Americana and 19th century art, and on the other, a collection of shrunken heads and cigar labels. With four floors to explore, who knows what you will discover!

Be a Lighthouse Keeper : It’s a tiring climb of 219 steps up the St. Augustine Lighthouse, but once you see the view from the top, it’s completely worth it. And, you may run into some of the ghosts said to haunt the place!

Sarbez: It came highly recommended by the locals as a nightlife destination with more of a pub/bar vibe. Weirdly, the main food item is a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. Hey, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! And the kitchen is open until 2 a.m. so you have lots of time to try it. But, it’s also the locals favorite spot to catch performances by local artists making it the IT of things to do in St. Augustine at night. And, there’s even an arcade.

Live in Colonial Times : Ever wondered what life was like back in the day in the oldest city in the US? Well, now you don’t have to. Visiting Colonial Street transports you to the Spanish colonial town of St. Augustine from the 1600s to the 1800s. It’s an interesting and lively interactive experience.

Relax on the beach : If all the history and many museums become too much for you (slim chance, though), you can take a break at the St. Augustine Beach. With it’s two miles of white sand shoreline and mild waves, it’s a peaceful break in the sun. And one of the most memorable free things to do in St. Augustine.

Have Jolly Roger Fun : Who didn’t dream of being a pirate at least once as a child (or even as an adult)? That’s why everyone loves going to the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum. Besides being a lot of fun with a replica pirate ship for you to board on the premises, you can see an actual pirate treasure chest and an original Jolly Roger flag. This museum is certainly one of the most unique things to do in St. Augustine.

Tour a Chocolate Factory : Need I say more? Whetstone Chocolate Factory has been a favorite of the locals since it opened its doors over 40 years ago. And talk about a scrumptious tour where not only do you learn about how chocolate is made, but you get to sample it, too.

Hang out with a ball of wax : Ok, so maybe not a ball, but how about 160 wax figures? At the Potters Wax Museum, another one of the more unique things to do in St. Augustine, you can see people from history as well as sports, entertainment, and a twinge of horror to keep things really interesting. Being the first wax museum in the US, you can’t pass it by.

Delve into old trinkets : Antiquing in the city is so much fun! Each antique shop is different and has some wonderfully weird pieces. Though it’s one of the more fun free things to do in St. Augustine, you will most likely not walk away empty handed. Talk about finding the perfect and special memento for your time in the city.

You can easily plan a trip to St. Augustine, Florida, with this 2 day itinerary covering St. Augustine’s top sites and attractions.

After reading this article, you will be able to customize your itinerary and make the most of your visit.

Read on for my tips on where to stay and where to eat, and the photos that I took during my visit to St. Augustine.

St. Augustine Itinerary – Day 1

Take the Old Town Trolley Tour

I am a big fan of the Trolley Tour . Trolley tours are available in only 7 cities in the United States, and St. Augustine is one of them.

St Augustine Old Town Trolley Tour best things to do

What I love the most about the trolley is that it becomes your taxi, and you can Hop-on and Hop-off all day long. I’ve taken the trolley in various cities and always find it incredibly practical and enjoyable.

If you don’t have many days to explore St. Augustine or are unable to walk for hours, the trolley will help you see the best highlights of the city.

I recommend jumping on the trolley as soon as it opens at 9:00 AM. The last trolley departs at 4:30 PM, and it is worth noting that a complimentary hotel shuttle service is included in your ticket.

Here’s the popular trolley tour that provides an overview of St. Augustine:

Or enjoy St. Augustine aboard this scenic cruise during sunset .

Visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the 8th stop in the Old Town Trolley Tour and the first one that I, and half of the trolley, decided to hop off at.

Cathedral Basilica St Augustine best things to do

The cathedral is home to the nation’s first Catholic parish . After multiple attempts, it was built in 1797, then rebuilt after a fire in 1887.

The facade is a combination of Spanish mission and Neoclassical styles, and the interior is adorned with murals and stained glass windows.

There is so much to see in the beautiful details, here is the photo I took of the cathedral’s unique interior.

cathedral basilica free things to do st augustine

On September 8, 1565, Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales celebrated the first mass as he proclaimed the land in the: “Nombre de Dios” ( “Name of God” ).  He was the chaplain who accompanied St. Augustine’s founder and the Spanish explorers.

Walk the grounds of Mission of Nombre de Dios

shrine lady of la leche best free attractions

It is at this location that the Great Cross , which rises 208 feet, was erected in 1965 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of Christianity in this land.

The 208’ bronze cross is the tallest cross in the Western Hemisphere . A gift from the Vatican , it was capped at that height to avoid the installation of a mandatory aircraft warning light.

These first Spanish settlers brought with them a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and established the Holy Virgin’s first sanctuary in the U.S. on the grounds.  They built a chapel and dedicated it to “Nuestra Señora de La Leche” ( “Our Lady of Milk & Safe Delivery” ).

Visit the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche

shrine lady of la leche

The  National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche , America’s first Marian shrine, is located on the mission grounds. Pilgrims come from all parts of the world to pray for Our Lady of La Leche’s powerful intercession and light a candle in the historic chapel. I love visiting churches when I travel and took time to explore the grounds.

Entrance to the grounds is available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Parking is free.

From outside the shrine, I hopped back on the trolley, and it continued its way to its final stops of the tour: The Old Senator Tree and the Fountain of Youth .

It wasn’t until the trolley dropped us off at stop #1 that I realized that I had parked my car at stop #3. Thankfully, a complimentary shuttle service is included in your ticket!

St. Augustine Itinerary – Day 2

Explore Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

Castillo de San Marcos best time to visit st augustine florida

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is one of the most visited sites and the focal point of historic St. Augustine. I suggest you start your day at this site.

The 17th-century Spanish stone fortress was built over 300 years ago by the Spanish to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route.

Many forts preceded the Castillo, however, this one made of coquina was impenetrable to enemy attack and was fire resistant.

Castillo de San Marcos best time to visit st augustine florida

Construction began in 1672 and lasted 23 years, until 1695. I loved walking around the fort during sunset time, I got to enjoy views of the inlet and the most beautiful pink sky.

Paid parking is available right next to it, that’s where I parked, but this lot has a limited number of spots. There’s also a parking garage a few blocks away.

Check out historic St. George Street

Just 5 minutes from Castillo de San Marcos is historic St. George Street.

St George Street St Augustine

After stopping for lunch at Casa Reina (I’ll get to it in a bit), we made our way to St. George Street, a pedestrian-only street lined with bars, restaurants, and shops.

This street represents the center of the town and the site of many of the reconstructed Spanish colonial buildings in St. Augustine. We grabbed coffee and tea at a cute little store and strolled up and down St. George Street while visiting local shops.

Pass through the Old City Gates

While you explore St. George Street, be sure to check out the Old City Gates and the Oldest Wooden School House.

The Old City Gates , one of St. Augustine’s most recognizable landmarks, is at the north end of St. George Street. Don’t forget to take a photo in front of this historical site!

The Oldest School House is a small wooden structure located at 14 St. George Street. It was built over 200 years ago, with red cedar and cypress, and put together with wooden pegs and handmade nails.

Take a Tour of Flagler College

Flagler College is perhaps my favorite building in all of St. Augustine.

flagler college st augustine

The college is named for industrialist and railroad magnate Henry Flagler who built it in 1888 as a hotel . The property is a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and was one of the most exclusive resorts of its day.

I recommend taking a guided tour of this gorgeous property. On the tour, you will see the courtyard, the grand lobby, the rotunda, the 68-foot domed ceiling supported by eight oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, the dining room with 79 Louis Comfort Tiffany Stained Glass windows, and the Flagler Room with handcrafted Austrian crystal chandeliers.

Flagler College was the first of Flagler’s series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast, others include the neighboring Hotel Alcazar ( now, Lightner Museum ).

Flagler College St Augustine things to do

Flagler College – Fun Facts :

  • Architects John Carrére and Thomas Hastings were young men right out of college when they designed Hotel Ponce de León ( now, Flagler College ) and Hotel Alcazar ( now, Lightner Museum ). They are noted most for the New York Public Library and The House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
  • Louis C. Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass & mosaics.
  • Hotel Ponce de León was one of the nation’s first electrified buildings . The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights.
  • During the Depression, the federal government-sponsored art programs at the property were attended by Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
  • The U.S. Coast Guard commandeered the property during World War II for use as a training center.
  • Mark Twain, President Theodore Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, and Babe Didrikson stayed at the hotel.
  • Henry Flagler’s great-nephew sold the property to a group from Mount Ida College to establish a women’s college , known today as Flagler College.

The Lightner Museum

Across from Flagler College, you will find the impressive Lightner Museum.

Lighter Museum St Augustine

The Lightner Museum occupies the former Hotel Alcazar , a resort also commissioned by railroad magnate Henry Flagler.

The Hotel Alcazar opened in 1889 , it was slightly less expensive than Hotel Ponce de León but had lots of amenities for guest enjoyment, like saunas, a casino, archery ranges, and the world’s largest swimming pool at the time.

In 1947, Otto Lightner purchased the building to house his art collection. The museum showcases Lightner’s collection of art and artifacts from the 19th century.

Where to Eat in St. Augustine?

Here are two spots that we loved and recommend:

CASA REINA TAQUERIA & TEQUILA

casa reina st augustine

If you want to sip on a margarita while enjoying the flavors of Mexican cuisine, this place is a must. It is located in St. Augustine’s historic downtown area, on the bay front at the foot of the Bridge of Lions .

I ordered the house margarita and the ‘nachos reina style’ – the best nachos I’ve ever had. This restaurant has lots of seating areas, both indoors and outdoors.

I suggest that you go during the day so that you can enjoy the outstanding view (see my images above & below).

CAP’S ON THE WATER

Cap’s On The Water is a waterfront spot located 6 miles from St. Augustine’s historic downtown. This restaurant is a hidden gem that only locals know about (and was recommended by my friend’s husband). Be sure to arrive before sunset, and enjoy dinner from the wooden deck!

The truffle parmesan fries and the seared catch that came with mashed potatoes & roasted carrots were delicious! If you are looking for fresh local seafood and coastal cuisine, go here.

More info for your days in St. Augustine

When was St. Augustine founded?

The city of St. Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565, by a Spanish soldier named Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. He named the settlement “San Agustín,” as his ships bearing settlers, troops, and supplies from Spain had first sighted land in Florida eleven days earlier on August 28, the feast day of St. Augustine.

When is the best time to visit St. Augustine?

I recommend visiting between October and April. We went in January and it was not busy, plus the weather was very pleasant.

The rainiest months are usually June, July, August, and September.

What is St. Augustine known for?

St. Augustine is well known for the fort, Castillo de San Marcos, which was built by the Spanish settlers to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, as well as Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth, containing healing water that enhances your appearance.

St. Augustine is also known for Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon that built luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast, and for being the oldest continuously settled city in the United States.

How far is St. Augustine?

The trip from Miami to St. Augustine is around 311 miles (500 km) via Florida’s Turnpike and I-95. The drive usually takes 5 hours, with normal driving conditions.

If you are visiting St. Augustine from Orlando, the trip is a little over 100 miles (165 km). St. Augustine’s location makes it a perfect day trip or weekend destination .

Which airport is best for flying to St. Augustine?

Northeast Florida Regional Airport is a private and commercial aviation facility that is 5 miles from St. Augustine, a 10 minute drive.

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is 51 miles from St. Augustine, a 1 hour drive.

Orlando International Airport is 121 miles from St. Augustine, a 2+ hour drive.

How much is the shuttle from Jacksonville to St. Augustine?

The drive from Downtown Jacksonville to Downtown St. Augustine is 41 miles (66 km). There are several shuttle companies that offer direct shuttle services from Jacksonville to St. Augustine, and the cost varies from $70-100 depending on the company that you hire.

Trips from St. Augustine

If you are wondering what else to do during your stay in St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Beach, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville , Atlantic Beach , and Amelia Island , are all within 25-70 miles from St. Augustine.

Another popular option is to drive from St. Augustine to Savannah, Georgia . The drive is 176 miles (283 km) and it takes 3 hours with normal driving conditions. Savannah is a charming Southern city with horse-drawn carriages, antebellum architecture, and a historic district filled with cobblestoned squares.

You can also drive from St. Augustine to Charleston , one of my favorite cities in South Carolina. The drive is 276 miles (445 km), and it takes around 4 hours. See my article on How to Spend 24 Hours in Charleston here !

A final note!

In February of last year, we stayed one week in Atlantic Beach , a beautiful city with laid-back beaches located 15 miles from downtown Jacksonville. To read about our stay at a resort located on the prettiest beach in Jacksonville click here .

Staying either in Jacksonville or Atlantic Beach and then making a day trip to St. Augustine is a great option for making the most of your visit to northeast Florida.

What will you do with your days in St. Augustine?!

TRAVEL & PACKING ESSENTIALS:

St. Augustine, Florida, is known as America’s Oldest City. The ancient city is filled with history. Ponce de Leon first discovered the area now known as St. Augustine in 1513. In 1565 Spanish Admiral Pedro Menedez de Aviles established St. Augustine.

This oceanside community beautifully reflects its Spanish heritage. With ancient brick streets that meander through the historic district like spider webs, this Old World city exudes a laid-back Southern magnetism that is hard to resist. Ancient buildings crafted from coquina shells line the streets, and remnants of the old city wall perch on the shimmering Matanzas River banks.

Located approximately an hour south of Jacksonville, St. Augustine is an ideal getaway for the mature traveler. Fly into Jacksonville, and meander down to St. Augustine along the seashore.

Note: Florida’s Historic Coast hosted my activities. All opinions remain my own.

Things To Do In St. Augustine

With a wide variety of activities, from lesser-known experiences to more popular adventures, St. Augustine is filled with fun.

Old Town Trolley

St. Augustine is a delightfully walkable city. But the best way to get an overview of this captivating city and its history is onboard The Old Town Trolley . The trolley slowly rolls down the old city streets as the driver regales you with St. Augustine’s history in a fun and engaging way, bringing the ancient city to life. Visitors can hop on and hop off throughout the tour.

Castillo De San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida.

Castillo De San Marcos

The Castillo de San Marcos is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. With its commanding view of the town and waterfront, the fortress is the oldest masonry fortress in the continental United States. The Spanish constructed the fort in 1672 to protect and defend Spain’s claim to Florida and her Atlantic trade route. Admission to the Castillo de San Marcos is $15. The National Park Service suggests checking the website for COVID-19 updates.

The Colonial Quarter

The Colonial Quarter gives visitors a peek into life in the old city. Four eras of history are featured within the park. This enables visitors to have an interactive journey through each period on the Living History tour.

The Pirate Museum in St. Augustine, Florida.

The Pirate Museum

Pirate Ship! These words would incite fear into the crews of the treasure ships that regularly sailed the Caribbean. The Pirate Museum brings these fearsome men and women to life. With exhibits that highlight such feared pirates as William Teach and Thomas Tew, the museum transports guests back to Port Royal, Jamaica, and the Golden Age of Piracy.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the Discovery Drawers throughout the museum. The drawers are marked with a skull and crossbones — you never know what treasure you’ll find.

Augustine Eco Tours

For a different perspective on America’s Oldest City, check out St. Augustine Eco Tours . On the water you’ll find treasures of a different nature. You’ll discover why dolphins call the Matanzas River home and why preserving this estuary is so critical.

Choose from kayaking, boating, or sailing tours. Each tour is different and unique. We loved our time on St. Augustine’s waterfront with a close-up view of the Bridge of Lions. Birds are also plentiful on the eco-tour, from Ibis and pelicans to roseate spoonbills.

The Lightner Museum in St. Augustine, Florida.

AHPix / Shutterstock

The Lightner Museum

The Hotel Alcazar has been transformed into the Lightner Museum . We fell in love with this fantastic museum many years ago and try to visit each time we are in St. Augustine. Henry Flagler, the railroad tycoon, built the hotel in 1889. This St. Augustine gem highlights America’s Gilded Age and is filled with breathtaking architecture and art.

One of our favorite exhibits is the stunning collection of stained glass. Stained glass was developed in Medieval Europe. During the end of the 19th century, American artists began incorporating new techniques that revolutionized the stained glass industry. With vibrant colors and rich textures, these new windows helped skyrocket the stained glass industry.

The exhibit now includes 12 new stained glass windows from the Lightner’s collection that have been restored.

Be sure to make time to have a bite to eat in the Cafe Alcazar . Located in the pool area, you’ll love the unique perspective that noshing on the floor of the pool offers. Looking upward, you’re surrounded by ornate balconies sporting hefty railings and steps leading down to the former pool. You can picture women walking along the balconies laughing as men dressed in swimming attire and sporting handlebar mustaches frolic in the pool.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse And Maritime Museum

The St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum is one of our must-see attractions when visiting St. Augustine. The lighthouse offers spectacular 360-degree panoramic views and is worth climbing 219 steps to reach the top. There are eight landings, each with a bench to allow guests to rest before climbing some more.

Your $12.95 gives you admission to the lighthouse, Heritage Boatworks, the lighthouse keeper’s home, and several WWII-era buildings.

The Classic Car Museum of St. Augustine in Florida.

The Classic Car Museum Of St. Augustine

The Classic Car Museum of St. Augustine is a relative newcomer to the area, but it is fantastic! The museum features over 30,000 square feet of event space and museum. It houses an impressive collection of vintage cars from the early 1900s to the present day.

I’ll confess that my heart was stopped by a pink 1950s Thunderbird, but there are so many fabulous vintage cars that you won’t know where to look first. Sidney Hobbs, the museum’s creator, shared with me that he drives each vehicle on the showroom floor regularly, which in and of itself is stunning.

Shrimp and grits from St. Augustine Fish Camp.

Best Restaurants In St. Augustine

St. Augustine’s culinary scene has exploded over the last year, and there are more options than ever for foodies.

The Tasting Tours

The Tasting Tours are a great way to truly get a feel for St. Augustine’s culinary scene’s depth and breadth. There are a variety of tasting tours and libation tours to choose from. All tours include stops at five fabulous venues and a guided tour of the city. The tours last 3 hours. I love the Wine and Dine tour myself. The Wine and Dine is a chauffeured tour and perfect for a romantic evening.

St. Augustine Fish Camp

St. Augustine Fish Camp is a newcomer to historic St. Augustine, but it is fabulous! Located at 142 Riberia Street, St. Augustine Fish Camp has a neighborhood vibe. I love that their incredible food is presented in a fun and creative way.

I am a snob when it comes to fresh seafood, and I was blown away by the crab cakes. They were filled with succulent fresh crab meat with little to no filler. The caper dill aioli was delicate and not overpowering.

You’ll be hard-pressed not to order dessert; their signature dessert, a white chocolate bread pudding, is absolutely divine. The key lime pie ran a close second, with a perfect balance of tart with a hint of sweetness. The crust was crunchy and flavorful, with an unexpected nuttiness that was fantastic.

A cheese board from The Floridian in St. Augustine.

The Floridian

The Floridian is another new face on St. Augustine’s food scene. I honestly did not know what to expect when we walked up to The Floridian. A rustic-chic interior and an outdoor dining space with outdoor lights offer a casual, laid-back atmosphere. The servers were knowledgeable, the servings were huge, and no one leaves unhappy.

The food is locally sourced, regionally inspired, and refreshingly innovative in presentation while keeping things simple and letting the food be the shining star. I loved the creative twist on old Southern favorites on the menu.

The cheese board was artfully presented and was the real surprise for me. The cheese selection was delicious, and paired with grapes and apples, candied pecans, and local Florida honey was outstanding. Be warned that the servings are enormous, and a salad bowl is enough for two.

Other restaurants of note in St. Augustine include the Raintree restaurant , the Columbia , and O.C. White’s Restaurant .

The Collector, a hotel in St. Augustine, Florida.

Best Hotels In St. Augustine

The collector.

The Collector Luxury Inn and Gardens has been named by USA Today as one of the 10 Best New Hotels in America. After experiencing The Collector, I would agree. With its location on the historic district’s fringe, you are surrounded by peaceful surroundings that allow you to relax. The Collector is an adults-only property, making it ideal for a romantic getaway for two.

You’ll find The Collector to be a hidden oasis. Their amenities include Valet Service and Parking, daily European Continental Breakfast, and Wi-Fi. A heated pool tucked away in the corner of the property is a welcome find. The Collector also includes turndown service (a really nice feature), bicycles to explore St. Augustine, lawn games, daily afternoon and late-night happy hours, and more.

The Well at the Collector is an experience you will not soon forget. Cocktails are not only handcrafted; they are handcrafted specifically for you. The bartender will chat with you to find out your preference of spirit, type, and profile of drinks and then custom craft a cocktail for you.

Casa de Suenos Bed and Breakfast in St. Augustine.

Casa De Suenos Bed And Breakfast

Casa de Suenos is located right in the heart of historic St. Augustine, and its history and charm just seep from its walls. Casa de Suenos is an intimate inn with only seven guest rooms, just perfect for a romantic St. Augustine getaway.

Amenities include a sumptuous breakfast each morning, comfortable and cozy robes, clock radios with iPhone/iPad Bluetooth connection, hairdryers and power strips, Wi-Fi, wine glasses and corkscrew, Turkish towels (a nice touch!), fresh flowers, and evening dessert.

The St. Francis Inn bed and breakfast in Florida.

The St. Francis Inn Bed And Breakfast

Located right in the heart of the historic downtown, The St. Francis Inn Bed and Breakfast offers 19 guest rooms uniquely decorated and well-appointed. The St. Francis Inn is perfect for couples looking for a cozy yet luxurious bed and breakfast stay.

We love the courtyard area of the inn. Hidden behind wrought iron fencing and boasting lots of lovely flora and fauna, it is the perfect spot to begin your day with a cup of coffee and a delightful breakfast.

The inn also has an inviting pool area, so after a day of sightseeing, take a cool dip in the pool.

Though St. Augustine truly is a year-round destination, I prefer to visit in the fall when it is cooler outside and less crowded. Spring is also a lovely time to visit, though days on the water for eco-tours can be a bit nippy. But my favorite time of year to visit St. Augustine is during the city’s Nights of Lights . Seeing the entire historic downtown come alive, lit by millions of tiny twinkling lights, is a truly magical experience.

St. Augustine, Florida, is a great city for a short trip like a weekend getaway. There are endless options for how to spend your time here. With this weekend in St. Augustine itinerary,  you can have the perfect visit to America’s oldest city.

In fact, there are so many things to do in St. Augustine you’ll have trouble narrowing it down to what you can reasonably manage to do in one weekend. Whether you crave adventure or relaxation, there are endless options for how to spend your time here!

How many days do you need in St. Augustine?

Although it would take you quite a while to see everything in St. Augustine, we recommend a visit of two to three days to see the top sites and attractions. We love how compact the historic area of St. Augustine is, making it easy to see a lot in a short amount of time. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway.

You can easily plan a trip to St. Augustine, Florida, with this weekend itinerary. We’ve covered the top sites. But don’t worry, we’ve also provided some recommendations for other things to do as well so that you can customize your itinerary.

St. Augustine Weekend Itinerary: Day 1

Explore castillo de san marcos national monument .

View of Castillo de San Marcos from Colonial Quarter Watchtower in St. Augustine, Florida

Address: 1 South Castillo Drive, Saint Augustine, FL 32084

I recommend you start your trip with a visit to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument . It’s one of the most visited sites in St. Augustine and for good reason.

It’s the oldest masonry fortification in the U.S., and (supposedly) one of only two existing structures in the world built from coquina. Coquina is composed of shell fragments and sand, which makes it ideal for military fort construction.

Unlike other forms of stone that would shatter when struck by cannon fire, because coquina is quite porous it simply compressed. So, it would actually deflect the shot or cannon balls would even lodge within the fortress walls.

We recommend you do the fort first thing in the morning. Later in the morning, there can be a long line to enter. And of course, in the summer months, the interior of the Castillo can get quite hot.

While there is a fee to enter the fort, guests are welcome to stroll the grounds outside for free. You can also use your America the Beautiful pass for entry.

Paid parking is available nearby at the adjacent parking lot or in the city parking garage just a few blocks away.

Check out historic St. George Street

Just a short stroll away from Castillo de San Marcos is historic St. George Street. St. George Street is the main street that runs down the center of old St. Augustine. St. George Street is closed to vehicles and home to many points of interest in the city such as museums, restaurants, and shops.

Have fun looking through everything this street has to offer. And don’t miss poking around the little side streets too.

Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park

Statue of Ponce de Leon at Fountain of Youth Archeological Park in Florida

Address: 11 Magnolia Avenue, St. Augustine, FL USA, 32084

For this site, you’ll have to hop in your car and head just a few minutes outside of central St. Augustine. The  Archeological Park marks the location of the native Timuacan village of Seloy. It was also the original location of St. Augustine.

Much like Historic Jamestowne , you can visit sites in the park that mark locations of original buildings.

filling a cup of water at the Fountain of Youth

The Park is also part living history museum with firearms and blacksmithing demonstrations.

You can get a small discount if you purchase tickets in advance online  or you can buy at the ticket office on site. There are no same-day ticket sales online.

Make sure to stop at the Fountain House to try a sip of the water from the “Fountain of Youth.” This is just for fun. There doesn’t appear to be any archeological evidence that Ponce de Leon ever set foot anywhere in the area of this park.

The Fountain of Youth is pet-friendly.

Featured tours in St. Augustine

If you’re looking for other activities to add to your St. Augustine weekend itinerary, check out these featured tours. All have   free cancellation available.

This   trolley tour  is quite popular and provides an overview of St. Augustine.

Or explore St. Augustine with a private electric cart tour .

Or why not try a  spooky ghost tour  one evening?

St. Augustine Weekend Itinerary: Day 2

Take a colonial quarter tour .

old printing press inside an old wooden building at the Colonial Quarter

Purchase tickets at 14 S. Castillo Drive

The Colonial Quarter living history museum  should definitely be on your St. Augustine weekend itinerary.

If you’ve ever been to Colonial Williamsburg , then you definitely have an idea of what Colonial Quarter is like…just on a much larger scale. Your Colonial Quarter ticket includes a guided tour of the museum.

Our tour guide, Bert, was outstanding. He walked us through hundreds of years of St. Augustine history, as the oldest permanent European settlement in North America.

The tour includes live demonstrations of blacksmithing and firearms, plus you can walk through a historic house and climb the watchtower for a great view of Castillo de San Marcos and the Matanzas River.

Stroll the oldest street in America

old narrow cobblestone street in St Augustine Florida

As long as you’re in the oldest city in America, why not also take a walk along the oldest street in America while you’re there?  Aviles Street is located south of Plaza de la Constitución between St. George Street and Charlotte Street .

In addition to making a great photo spot, Aviles Street is also home to art galleries, museums, and restaurants.

Pirate & Treasure Museum

Exterior of Pirate & Treasure Museum and sign

Location: 12 South Castillo Drive, St. Augustine, FL 32084

I recommend you make a stop at the  Pirate & Treasure Museum  during your St. Augustine weekend getaway.

Initially, I visited the museum almost solely out of curiosity, but I was so glad I went. It’s not a large museum, but the exhibits are well done, fun, and engaging. There is an impressive collection of historical pirate artifacts in the museum including a “treasure chest” and an old Jolly Roger flag.

The Pirate & Treasure Museum is a little dark (in every sense of the word) and might not be appropriate for very young children. The museum was established by pirate history enthusiast and entrepreneur Pat Croce. It was originally located in Key West, Florida, and then moved to St. Augustine.

You can purchase tickets in the museum or  buy them ahead of time online .

Oldest Wooden School House

Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse building exterior

Okay, this one’s mainly just for a laugh. If you have time (and a little money to spare) I recommend you consider popping into the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse. You’ll find it at the top of St. George Street.

It’s quite small, so it won’t take much time at all to see every square inch of it. It’s also…how do I put this delicately?…so cheesy and hokey and cringe-y.

And full of creepy mannequins. They stare at you from everywhere. They might give you nightmares. Don’t miss the child mannequin stashed UNDER THE STAIRS as “punishment.”

I did find that those who sell the entry tickets take the museum quite seriously, so if you do go in as a bit of a joke….maybe don’t let on that’s why you’re there. Just sayin’…

More things to do in St. Augustine

View of the stage at the St. Augustine Amphitheater

Of course, there’s much more to do in St. Augustine than you can fit into one weekend.

If you enjoy music, definitely take a look at what’s going on at the  St. Augustine Amphitheater  during your visit. It’s a great venue and just a short drive from the historic center of the city on Anastasia Island. Anastasia makes a great day trip from St. Augustine .

Check out these additional options. All include   free 24-hour cancellation.

  • You might enjoy taking a guided tour of the Old Jail Museum .
  • Or perhaps visit the “first established wax museum” in the United States.
  • Another great option is to see several St. Augustine attractions for one price with  this combo ticket  that includes a trolley ticket and access to several sites/museums (plus free cancellation).

Where to stay in St. Augustine

Although its historic center is quite compact there is no shortage of accommodations. You’ll find a wide variety of places to stay from vacation rentals to small B&Bs and boutique hotels.

Affordable major chain hotels are also nearby and make a good budget option.

A vacation rental just steps from the historic district like  this one on Airbnb  has plenty of room for a small family or it’s perfect for a couple. And since it includes a full kitchen, it’s easy to save money on food.

If you’re interested in hotel accommodations here are some top-rated and recommended options:

Casa Monica : This iconic resort and spa in the historic district is a popular high-end place to stay. It’s located very near Plaza de la Constitución. Book your stay right now.

Penny Farthing Inn : This Bed & Breakfast is located in historic St. Augustine near the popular Lightner Museum. Book your stay today .

Holiday Inn St. Augustine – Historic District : This affordable hotel option is located about a 6-minute drive from Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Book your reservations now .

Where to Eat in St. Augustine

Of course, if you go the route of staying at a Vrbo or Airbnb, you can save money on food by eating in.

You can shop for food and supplies at the local Publix (125 Jenkins St, St. Augustine, FL 32086) or the Target at 1440 US Hwy 1 S, St. Augustine, FL 32084.

If you do want to eat out, here are a few places we would recommend for lunch or dinner:

The Floridian

Location: 72 Spanish St #3638, St. Augustine, FL 32084

We highly recommend you make time for dinner at The Floridian during your St. Augustine weekend. We thought the food and service were outstanding. They have great vegetarian and gluten-free options.

It’s a popular spot, so reservations are recommended.  Check out their menus here .

Large white bowl willed with golden curry and rice on a wooden table

Columbia

Location: 98 St George St, St. Augustine, FL 32084

My husband’s favorite meal of our St. Augustine visit was at Columbia . They have some great gluten-free options and some solid vegetarian options. Hubby claims Columbia has the best flan he’s ever tasted.

This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but you can save a little money if you eat there for lunch. Reservations are   strongly recommended .

Sweet treats

There are also great places in St. Augustine to get snacks and dessert:

  • The Hyppo Gourmet Ice Pops : amazing popsicles in a ton of fun flavors.
  • Cousteau’s Waffle and Milkshake Bar : awesome dessert Belgian waffles and handspun milkshakes.
  • Mayday Ice Cream : delicious ice cream! Includes dairy-free options.

Belgian waffle with whipped cream dusted with powdered in a paper container

Tips for visiting St. Augustine

When to go .

You’ll enjoy smaller crowds and somewhat lower temperatures if you visit St. Augustine between October and April. The rainiest months on average are from June through September, where it can rain up to 10 or 11 days out of the month.

How to get around

The best way to get around historic St. Augustine for your day trip is to use your feet. The historic district is quite compact with most top sites very close to each other.

If you’re staying outside the historic area of St. Augustine, you can park your car in the Historic Downtown Parking Facility (1 Cordova Street) and then easily walk to nearly everything you want to see.

There may be some limited street parking around the area, but we would recommend you use the garage. There’s also a convenient Visitor Center there, as well as restrooms and a gift shop.

Final thoughts on planning a trip to St. Augustine, Florida

If you’re looking for a beautiful destination with a rich history, then St. Augustine is the place to be. Whether you enjoy history, food or outdoor adventure, you can’t go wrong with a St. Augustine weekend getaway.

Wow! thank you so much for this post. Will definitely save it. We’re planning on going for our honeymoon 🙂

Wonderful! I think you’ll really enjoy it. And congratulations!

Isn’t St. Augustine home to the oldest Catholic church and Mass celebrated in North America? I am surprised this is not mentioned in your article, even to non-Christians, as a very significant historical event.

The Cathedral of San Juan in Puerto Rico is older, but it would be good to mention the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine.

Recommend a tour of Flagler College as well. The history of the main building and the architecture of the historic Ponce de Leon Hotel is amazing.

Yes! Good suggestion. I’ve heard only good things. Unfortunately, they were closed for tours when I was in town.

Hi. Quick note: It’s the Lightner Museaum. Not Leitner.

Oof. Thanks for catching my embarrassing spelling error. It’s fixed now.

St. Augustine hotel was named a 'Best Resort in Florida' by Travel + Leisure

The inn's storied past is just part of its appeal..

st augustine florida travel and leisure

One of St. Augustine's most eclectic lodging properties has been listed among the "Top 15 Best Resorts in Florida" by the readers of Travel + Leisure.

It's not the first time The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens has made the annual list, and it's just one of many accolades the hotel has racked up since opening in 2017.

Ask general manager Charlie Robles to what he attributes the resounding success of the property and he'll tell you it's certainly its uniqueness and historical character.

"I always like to say you're two blocks away from downtown but two centuries away from everything else," Robles said.

Hotel lodging: St. Augustine businessman plans to turn city's tallest building into hotel

Lodging accolades: St. Augustine's The Local named No. 1 roadside motel in nation in USA Today poll

The inn encompasses one city block with nine separate buildings of varied architectural and style periods centered around a grassy courtyard that's lushly landscaped and includes fire pits, a pool, statues, a koi pond and fountains.

Thirty units (20 of them suites) are available and Robles said The Collector is more than 90% occupied year round.

A storied past

The story of how the nine historic structures came to be tied together in a kind of enclave is as fascinating as the houses themselves.

Kenneth Worcester Dow, the only heir to the Dow family's lucrative lumber business, purchased the oldest house on the block, the 1790 Prince Murat House, in the 1930s after falling in love with St. Augustine in his travels.

The structure is made of coquina and, aside from some restoration work, looks very much the way it did at the time when Dow and wife Mary welcomed regular houseguests, including famous writers and actors of the time.

The Dows were passionate collectors of artwork, furniture and other antiques,

"They went to Europe about three or four times a year and brought back all kinds of things," Robles said.

By the early 1950s, Dow had acquired all nine homes on the site, some of which include a former boarding house; a general store; the home of famed writer William Dean Howell; and the Rose House, named so because one-time resident Jean Gordon, a renowned floral expert, ran a "rose museum" at the property.

Surrounded by history

In addition to the houses, the 1 acre on which they sit was the site of several important chapters of St. Augustine history, including its use as a 16th century hospital (where amputated body parts were known to be thrown out windows, Robles noted) and cemetery; an 18th century Spanish defense line; and the setting for the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation reading that freed Florida’s slave population. Markers around the property offer more information, as does a tour free to guests led by docent Melissa Stuart.

In 1989, an aging Dow offered to deed his entire collection to the city of St. Augustine; surprisingly, the city turned him down.

Instead, he donated the site to the Museum of Arts and Sciences in 1989. Following an 11-year restoration, the Dow Museum of Historic Houses opened in 2000, showcasing the extensive collection.

In 2013, the property went up for sale, eventually being purchased by David Corneal for $1.1 million, according to Robles who noted it was in very run-down condition at the time.

"It took close to five years and $9 million to restore it because so much had to be repaired and replaced," Robles said.

The work has obviously paid off.

Rates for rooms, which include amenities like kitchenettes, turn-down service, daily breakfast and snacks, start at $229 (suites and peak times drive up the price.)

The inn is popular with couples looking for a romantic getaway, family reunions, corporate escapes and travelers looking for a unique, historical experience. Robles, who has a license to marry people, has officiated quite a few small (six guests maximum) weddings.

The only 4 Diamond hotel in downtown St. Augustine, Robles said The Collector takes pride in the personalized, hospitable experience its staff provides.

The recent award by Travel + Leisure is just another feather in its cap. The Collector took the No. 5 spot of the Top 15 Best Resorts in Florida, in the company of heavy hitters like the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island and the White Elephant in Palm Beach.

The grounds of The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens, at 149 Cordova St., is open to the public every first Friday of the month, with live music and refreshments available.

The 12 Best Places to Visit in Florida, According to a Lifelong Resident

The Sunshine State has it all, but these are Florida's best vacation destinations, according to a fourth-generation resident.

st augustine florida travel and leisure

Year-round sunshine, miles of beaches, and almost as many palm trees as people — what's not to love? Florida is where the world goes on vacation.

While the state eats, sleeps, and breathes tourism, deciding exactly where to visit in Florida can be the hardest part. Any kind of traveler can enjoy a trip to Florida because the state has it all: fabulous resorts , theme parks for families, outdoor adventures for nature lovers, and historical significance for the curious.

As for the question of the best places to visit in Florida, there's really no wrong answer, but as a fourth-generation Floridian, here's my take.

The Palm Beaches

Think of the Palm Beaches as a fast pass to the best of Florida. An umbrella term for the cities of Palm Beach County, the region includes spots like West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Wellington, Delray Beach, Jupiter, and Boca Raton.

The sheer diversity of activities available in the Palm Beaches is its strength. You can shop, surf, scuba dive, enjoy brunch with your pup , watch an international polo match, relax on 47 miles of shoreline, meet rehabilitating sea turtles , take a quick two-night cruise to the Bahamas , see a Broadway musical at the Kravis Center , and catch a foul ball at a spring training baseball game. Out west, you can book airboat tours of the Everglades or get up close and personal with rhinos, giraffes, and zebras at Lion Country Safari , a cageless, drive-thru zoo spread over 600 acres.

If you're after a ritzy resort stay, Palm Beach and Boca Raton have you covered. Nothing beats The Breakers — you'll be treated like royalty — but The Colony Hotel , Eau Palm Beach , and The Boca Raton are harbingers of a modern era in Palm Beach.

Across the bridge, West Palm Beach has a big-city feel without the headaches of traffic and congestion. Take the free trolley between Clematis Street, The Square , and the waterfront, or head out to Grandview Public Market in the up-and-coming Warehouse District.

Hilton West Palm Beach houses Galley, a restaurant with tasty cocktails, fresh seafood, and gourmet pizzas, and The Ben West Palm and Canopy by Hilton West Palm Beach Downtown both have rooftops with stellar views.

St. Augustine

As the oldest city in America , St. Augustine has had a lot of time to get it right. Settlers arrived in the mid-1500s and some still-standing spots, like the Fountain of Youth and Castillo de San Marcos, date back almost that far. It's a walkable town imbued with intrigue; whispers of the past swirl through every cobblestone alley.

In St. Augustine, learning about the area's history (preferably via ghost tour once darkness envelops the city) is a given. But there are also newer arrivals built to please the modern explorer, like Ice Plant for cocktails and the Alligator Farm for a perfectly Floridian animal encounter. Visit during St. Augustine's annual Nights of Lights event around Christmas to see the city sparkle in the glow of three million lights.

For the perfect marriage of history and a cozy breed of luxury, book a stay at the adults-only Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens , where you can tour the grounds with the property historian and gather for expertly crafted cocktails at The Well Bar. For a taste of old-world elegance, St. Francis Inn — built in 1791 — is a bed-and-breakfast that captures the spirit of the city and all there is to love about homey accommodations. It's located right on St. George Street, St. Augustine's main drag.

Once you've walked up an appetite, head to dinner at Michael's Tasting Room , The Floridian , or O.C. White's , a historic restaurant in the heart of the action. Or, for something a bit more casual, stop into A1A Ale Works for perhaps the best root beer of your life, served alongside a beautiful view of the Bridge of Lions.

Florida Keys

Stretching 113 miles from Key Largo to the southernmost point of the continental United States in funky Key West, the Florida Keys is a veritable paradise; pick any Key along the way and you're guaranteed a tropical getaway with no need for a passport. Fill your itinerary with activities like boating, diving, fishing, snorkeling coral reefs, feeding 10-foot tarpon at Robbie's , and generally enjoying one of the best destinations in the world for the let-your-hair-down brand of vacationing.

Key Largo boasts the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo , the first all-inclusive in the Keys, while Playa Largo is a solid choice for families or anyone who loves an action-packed trip; there are pools, water sports like sailing, parasailing, and kayaking, and even a hammock garden for reading.

For the best seafood (and Key lime pie) in the Keys, book a table at The Fish House , a family-owned Key Largo institution that's set apart by the fact that they're one of the only restaurants sourcing exclusively from local fishermen, so your fish is as fresh as it gets.

Orlando and Central Florida

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Orlando is the destination of choice for many people planning a vacation to Florida, and for good reason: There's Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom, Epcot , Universal Studios, Universal's Islands of Adventure, Animal Kingdom, Discovery Cove, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter , Gatorland, and more. While those spots will always be popular among visitors and locals alike, there's more to this Florida region.

For example, head due east from Orlando and you'll land at NASA's Kennedy Space Center , where you can explore a complex dedicated to all things space travel, and even watch rocket launches. To the north, quieter Winter Park is considered the Palm Beach of central Florida. There, you can enjoy lakeside sunsets and stroll under canopies of old oak trees. Eat breakfast at Briarpatch and dinner at Hillstone Restaurant .

There are also plenty of ways to get outdoorsy and adventurous in Florida once you've escaped the tourist traps of Orlando. Some distance from the Orlando area, but still in central Florida, you've got the Blue Grotto , a 100-foot clearwater cavern that's popular with divers, and also Rainbow Springs State Park , where you can lazily float down Rainbow River in an inner tube.

Crystal River

Slower-paced, lesser-known Crystal River is a sleepy, tucked-away destination on Florida's western coast. Crystal River has little by way of culinary and nightlife offerings, but it's home to the most striking natural beauty of Florida, especially for those who love being on the water.

A clear kayak tour with Get Up and Go Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the enchanting springs of Crystal River, and wintertime visitors have a good chance of paddling alongside any of the hundreds of manatees who migrate into the springs each year. As you tour Hunter Springs, Jurassic Springs, and Three Sisters Springs, you may also spot dolphins, turtles, birds, and other wildlife. Nearby Plantation on Crystal River offers simple, no-frill waterfront accommodations spread across 232 acres on Kings Bay.

For an even more delightfully Florida vacation activity, head to one of the legendary live mermaid shows at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park , about an hour's drive south of Crystal River.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale

Jamie Ditaranto/Travel + Leisure

When it comes to the best places to visit in Florida, no destination packs a sizzle quite like Miami. It's a global city with everything you could hope for in terms of great eats, hotels, and party venues. In the uber-Instagrammable Art Deco District in South Beach, you'll find bubbling creativity and the sort of old-meets-new style that keeps Miami on the map, and at nearby Wynwood Walls , there's street art and sky-high murals galore.

If you're planning a trip, August is by far the best month to visit Miami, as long as you're into indulgent five-star experiences. During this month, the perfect trifecta of citywide deals converge: Miami Spa Months , Miami Spice Restaurant Months , and Miami Hotel Months . The promotions give visitors a chance to stay at places like Mandarin Oriental, Miami , book ultra-luxe spa treatments, and dine at the city's best restaurants for a fraction of the usual price.

A bit further north of Miami, bustling Fort Lauderdale is another seaside metropolis where you can spend action-packed days and nights. Work your way down the Ale Trail for craft brews and bites, or board the Water Taxi for a different perspective on the city — it's like a trolley system on water, fitting for what some call the "Venice of America" due to Fort Lauderdale's plentiful waterways. Hop off the Water Taxi at Las Olas Boulevard for the city's best shopping and dining.

Best of all, the new and modern Brightline connects Miami to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach in an hour or less.

Tampa Bay Area (Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater)

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Tampa and its surrounding neighborhoods make up a tri-city haven on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Ride roller coasters at Busch Gardens , or head over to Clearwater Marine Aquarium for an encounter with the slippery stars of the Dolphin Tale movies.

Clearwater Beach is a laid-back town that consistently ranks among the best beaches in Florida. Visit during the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival to see monstrous sand carvings at the kind of beachfront art event only Florida can host. Stay at Opal Sands — it's a half-mile beach walk from the festival, and each one of its 230 guest rooms is waterfront. Together with St. Petersburg, the area is also an under-the-radar art and culture mecca of sorts, with murals and museums such as the visually stunning Dalí museum.

The Florida Panhandle consists of Pensacola, Panama City Beach, Destin, and Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. A popular spring break spot, the Panhandle relies heavily on tourism.

The Panhandle's calm Gulf waters and white-sand beaches are a major draw, but beach day alternatives abound: Visitors can hike, bike, or canoe in St. Andrews State Park or start happy hour early at Panama City Beach institutions like the delightfully over-the-top Pineapple Willy's (don't leave without ordering a po' boy with your frozen drink). In Destin, Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park will keep the whole family busy.

Amelia Island

Quiet little Amelia Island is popular with visitors who can appreciate a charming seaside destination with no crowds in sight. Plus, with rolling dunes and marshes instead of just flat, sandy beaches, the geography of the area packs added interest. There are beaches, of course, but nature lovers will also want to check out Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and Fort Clinch State Park , home to the 19th-century Fort Clinch plus nature trails, camping grounds, and wildlife.

Another Amelia Island attraction is the oldest lighthouse in Florida, proudly standing 67 feet tall. Charming beachfront lodges and inns line Amelia Island, so visitors have their pick of endearing accommodations. Head to historic downtown Fernandina Beach on the island to shop or chow down at the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival , an annual tradition dedicated to a shared love of shrimp.

A rural little island city with pastel homes, Cedar Key is a charmer. Visitors can expect secluded beaches and botanical gardens to wander, plus nearby natural springs to swim and paddle around in. Cedar Key is a simple spot, so it flies under the Florida tourism radar, but it's a nice place for anyone seeking a vacation that's a bit quieter than the state's more happening hot spots.

Some fun activities in and around Cedar Key include a day trip to nearby Manatee Springs State Park for an up-close animal encounter, especially during the cooler months, or biking, kayaking, and hiking. There's also Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge , Cedar Key Museum State Park , and the Cedar Key Historical Society & Museum if you want to learn more about the area. End your relaxing days with a sunset at Cedar Key Airport Beach.

Naples is another gem on Florida's western coast — the area is called the Paradise Coast for a reason. Romantic and ritzy, Naples is known for beautiful white-sand beaches, sprawling golf courses, high-end restaurants, and upscale shopping — a "sister city" of sorts to Palm Beach, located directly across the state on Florida's eastern coast.

If retail therapy is on the agenda (and it should be in Naples), head to Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South to put a dent in your credit limit. Or, if natural attractions are more your speed, head to the Naples Botanical Garden , Clam Pass Park , or the Naples Zoo . Art lovers will also find a lot to enjoy at Artis — Naples , a multidisciplinary organization home to The Baker Museum and the Naples Philharmonic, or any of the impressive art galleries dotting the city.

Everglades National Park

Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure

A national park trip may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Florida, but the state is ripe with one-of-a-kind spots (expect alligators and palm trees instead of bison and geysers) and Everglades National Park is its crown jewel.

Encompassing 1.5 million acres of preserved wetlands on the southern tip of the Floridian peninsula, the Everglades is actually a slow-moving "river of grass," comprising unique habitats such as coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes, pine flatwoods, and more. It's a wildlife lover's paradise, teeming with alligators, snakes, fish, more than 360 species of birds, and even endangered animals like the Florida panther, American crocodile, and West Indian manatee.

For those eager to explore, there are trails and guided tours available; the main entrances are at Shark Valley, Florida City near Homestead, and Everglades City on the Gulf Coast. Visit during the park's dry season (November to April) for lower temperatures, more active wildlife, and fewer mosquitoes.
