Walking in the path of the Harlem Renaissance

  • Deep Read ( 7 Min. )
  • By Ken Makin Special correspondent

February 5, 2024 | New York

Tour guide Lawrence Henderson stops to admire his favorite mural, “Planet Harlem.” Artist Paul Deo’s work is peopled with a galaxy of Black stars.

“Harlem loves its heroes,” Mr. Henderson says during a recent three-hour walking tour. One way to learn about the neighborhood that sheltered artists and writers, activists and poets, is by walking among the streets now named for many of them. The fruits of their inspiration will soon be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, when it presents “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism” later this month.

Why We Wrote This

The Harlem Renaissance is the subject of a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Our cultural commentator relished his time walking the same streets that sheltered Langston Hughes, Malcolm X, and Alain Locke.

The Met exhibit seeks to reframe the Harlem Renaissance as “the first African American-led movement of international modern art.”

Danille Taylor, director of the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum, which loaned a quintet of pieces to the Met, believes that this exhibit is a commentary not only on Black life, but on legacy as well.

“[The Harlem Renaissance] had the New Negro, now we have Black Lives Matter, and they’re very much the same,” says Dr. Taylor. “We are human and we demand to be seen.”

Tour guide Lawrence Henderson stops to admire his favorite mural, “Planet Harlem.” Artist Paul Deo’s work is peopled with a galaxy of Black stars –limitless luminaries in politics, entertainment, and resistance.

Mr. Henderson, a former service member and prison guard, says his eyes light up every time he sees this work of art. “Most murals you see have a particular theme, but this covers everything!” he says during a recent three-hour walking tour.

“Harlem loves its heroes,” Mr. Henderson says. One way to learn about the neighborhood that inspired artists and writers, activists and poets, is by walking among the streets now named for many of them. The fruits of that inspiration will soon be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, when it presents “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism.” Opening Feb. 25, the exhibit will be New York City’s first focus on the renaissance since 1987.

One hundred years after its launch, the Black arts renaissance remains relevant, whether it’s inspiring the next generation of artists or providing a gateway to a proud cultural past. The Met exhibit not only taps into this sense of Black pride, but also draws from institutions with histories as radical as the art it plans to display.

The Met exhibit seeks to reframe the Harlem Renaissance as “the first African American-led movement of international modern art,” the museum said in a press release. Organizers plan to explore how Black artists portrayed city life in the 1920s-1940s – in the early part of the Great Migration, “when millions of African Americans began to move away from the segregated rural South.”

movement free tour

It will feature over 160 works of painting, sculpture, photography, film, and ephemera, some of which are on loan from historically Black colleges and universities such as Clark Atlanta University and Howard University. Danille Taylor, director of Clark Atlanta’s art museum, which donated a quintet of pieces, believes that this exhibit is a commentary not only on Black life, but on legacy as well.

“I think these exhibits are educational. They provide physical evidence of the past, so that the past can be in dialogue with the present, and the present can be in dialogue with the past,” says Dr. Taylor in a phone interview. “[The Harlem Renaissance] had the New Negro, now we have Black Lives Matter, and they’re very much the same. We are human and we demand to be seen.”

Harlem has exhibited that message for generations, through historians, street vendors, and a collective consciousness. “Planet Harlem,” the apple of Mr. Henderson’s eye, is reflective of the adaptability of art beyond the confines of a museum. Mr. Deo himself is cognizant of protecting the people’s art, calling for his mural to gain “landmark status.”

Locke, Hughes, and Harlem’s “Godfather”

It’s hard to imagine that for the first 200 years of its existence, Harlem was undeveloped farmland. And yet, even in its modern incarnation, the city still has tillers – from street vendors to artisans to bakers.

The father of the Harlem Renaissance was Alain Locke. He was a writer and a dreamer. His first anthology, “The New Negro: An Interpretation,” was published in 1925. It was a collection of works from dynamic artists and analysts such as Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, and W.E.B. Du Bois. As Locke put it in his essay, this was a period of renewal, of self-respect, and of self-dependence among Black people.

movement free tour

Harlem has always been in the process of healing. Its current battles and sources of pride are all on display during one of Mr. Henderson’s excursions. The Harlem Hospital Mural Pavilion greets onlookers with a trio of images, for example. There’s a picture of Cab Calloway at the Cotton Club; a picture of Black professionals, or as Mr. Henderson puts it, “Black excellence”; and a depiction of the Great Migration.

In Locke’s anthology, there is an essay from historian and writer Arturo Schomburg titled “The Negro Digs Up His Past.” With so much talk of renaissance and rebirth, Schomburg focuses on another R-word: restoration. “History must restore what slavery took away,” he writes, “for it is the social damage of slavery that the present generations must repair and offset. So among the rising democratic millions we find the Negro thinking more collectively, more retrospectively than the rest.”

Schomburg, whose name is on Harlem’s Center for Research in Black Culture, took his own message to heart. His library of Black works, which grew beyond the capacity of his home, was shared with a division of the New York Public Library that eventually became the Schomburg Center. Years later, his life and legacy continue to grow like a tree planted by the rivers of water.

In the Schomburg Center, there is a lobby named after Langston Hughes, which honors both of Harlem’s heroic historians. The lobby is literally Hughes’ final resting place: His ashes are buried underneath. There is a mural of sorts in the floor – a cosmogram linking Hughes and Schomburg with African ritual ground markings and other measurements. The center says the cosmogram is “weaving a web of connections between people of diverse cultures and backgrounds, the past and the present.”

During the course of the journey through Harlem, Mr. Henderson also engages tourists with talk about gentrification. The demographics of Harlem are changing. Black residents made up 90% of Central Harlem in the 1980s. In 2021, it was 44%.

An online petition from the New York Interfaith Commission for Housing Equality has a two-word message: “Save Harlem!” The group’s angst stems from an Ivy League institution, Columbia University, and private developers “aiming to destroy and displace thousands of Harlem’s residents.”

movement free tour

Mr. Henderson stands in front of the Lenox Terrace apartments and talks about the infamous Ellsworth Raymond “Bumpy” Johnson, the “Godfather of Harlem.” Johnson had South Carolina roots as well; he was born in Charleston on All Hallows’ Eve in 1905. The historic terrace was where he called home, and even with his criminal reputation, he was beloved by Harlem.

With the rising cost of housing – and employment – Harlem is hanging on for dear life. A vendor named Divine Styles proudly displays what equates to a curbside bookstore. There is a red, black, and green flag adorning the stand, and the mutuality between the vendor and Mr. Henderson is apparent even before one sees the similarly colored flag on the tour guide’s jacket. The Pan-African flag, also known as the RBG flag, symbolizes unity among people of African descent.

Divine Styles laments that his stand is always on the move, most recently forced out of his old spot by the new Victoria hotel. Nevertheless, true to Harlem, he remains optimistic.

“I love this corner,” he says. “My goal is to publish a book about all of the vendors on 125th Street.”

“Before they’re gone?” Mr. Henderson asks.

“We’re not going to let that happen,” Mr. Styles responds. “There should be a Black preservation – something to protect the vendors.”

“By Any Means Necessary”

It’s hard to fathom that after hundreds of years, there are parts of Harlem that are still underdeveloped. But the tillers persevere. And so does Harlem’s soul.

There is an unfinished mural with a host of celebrity images and four words that Malcolm X made famous – “By Any Means Necessary.” The artists? Pipps and Marissa, the former of whom was seemingly inspired by Gladys Knight, the “Empress of Soul.”

The mural, which was commissioned by a community outreach program, has a quintet of images in which a famous elder is inspiring a young person. There’s Muhammad Ali fitting a boxing glove on a youngster and Serena Williams offering a tennis lesson. On the other side, there’s LeBron James shooting hoops with a young protégé and Simone Biles instructing a future gymnast. At the heart of the piece is Malcolm X, reading a book to a child.

“They wanted to show change-makers in a particular field working with youth, pretty much, you know, passing the torch,” Pipps says. “I want Malcolm to be in the center because he’s from this community.”

movement free tour

The highlight of the project might have been the community paint day on Nov. 14, when onlookers and other participants were allowed to paint the mural.

“We had small kids here, elderly people, people stopping at the bus stop. Everyone was allowed to paint,” Marissa says. “I love inspiring people and letting them know they can do whatever.”

For this journalist, one of the highlights of the tour is a stop for red velvet cake from Cake Man Raven. His bakery is about four minutes from the “Planet Harlem” mural, and it is a confectionary to the stars. His clients, he says, have included Jay-Z and Whoopi Goldberg. The crimson in that delectable delight is a reminder of the power of migration. Red velvet cake is commonly thought of as a Southern delicacy, and the Cake Man, from Florence, South Carolina, is quick to note his roots.

As the tour comes to a close, the marquees for the Apollo Theater and the former Victoria Theater are a reminder of Harlem’s imposing history. At night, their neon lights illuminate the sky and one’s imagination. In daylight, the cultural landmarks represent the thin line between struggle and progress.

A block or so down the street, another legend adept at migration comes to the forefront – Harriet Tubman, whose memorial sits at a fork in the road. It is a striking piece, replete with distinctive roots that represent slavery. Her skirt is decorated with images of enslaved people she led to freedom. It is worth mentioning that Tubman is one of America’s great generals due to her leadership in the Combahee River Raid in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

The duality of Harlem – of Black struggle and progress – comes through in Mr. Henderson’s closing words. There is lament and love.

“People in Harlem, they complain about things changing, and rightfully so. But we had Harlem for 100 years. We claimed it and we let it slip through our hands,” he says. “There are many reasons. We couldn’t get loans from banks. Systemic racism.

“It hurts to see Black people down and out,” he adds. “Knowing our potential, knowing how much we accomplished.”

As Mr. Henderson departs, his words resonate. So do the words of Locke: “In the very process of being transplanted, the Negro is being transformed.”

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”

If you’re looking for bran muffin journalism, you can subscribe to the Monitor for $15. You’ll get the Monitor Weekly magazine, the Monitor Daily email, and unlimited access to CSMonitor.com.

Swift is currently on a hiatus, but the Eras Tour will resume in Paris on May 9 and run through the spring and summer in 12 European countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and more, before coming back to North America this fall.

Olivia Rodrigo

Another pop sensation, Olivia Rodrigo, is building off the continued hype from her 2023 LP, "Guts." She is now embarking on "The Guts World Tour," the second tour for Rodrigo, who at only 21 already has a slew of Grammy nominations (and several wins) under her belt. This tour has made recent headlines over a contraception controversy surrounding abortion rights groups that promote at her concerts. Rodrigo will perform in seven North American cities through the end of April before heading overseas to Europe in May.

The Rolling Stones

An iconic group from the British Invasion is back with their first concert tour in two years. The Rolling Stones, considered one of the greatest rock bands in history, will embark on their "Hackney Diamonds" tour this April, playing in 16 North American cities through the end of July. Fans of the Stones should expect to "experience Mick, Keith and Ronnie play their most popular hits," the concert tour's page said, as well as hear "fan favorite deep cuts and music from their new album 'Hackney Diamonds.'" The album is the band's first original material in 18 years.

Madonna

Fans of Madonna can celebrate the singer on her aptly-named "Celebration Tour," the pop singer's 12th concert tour that will run through the end of April. Unlike prior tours, this outing is not in promotion of a new album — it is instead described as a "retrospective tour" highlighting Madonna's decades-long career. The tour began in the United Kingdom and made its way through European countries throughout 2023, but is currently running throughout the United States. It is slated to end with a series of five concerts in Mexico City.

Ever since he broke onto the world stage with 2013's "Take Me to Church," Hozier has been generating headlines. 2023 was no different, as Hozier released his successful third LP, and is now following it up with a tour. The tour , named after the album, " Unreal Unearth ," will travel to 28 U.S. cities from April to June before heading to Europe. Once across the pond, Hozier will tour numerous European cities before coming back to the U.S.

Blink-182 may be experts in "All the Small Things," but one thing that isn't small is the rock band's ongoing world tour. The tour comes on the heels of the band's tenth album, "One More Time...," and marks the return of guitarist Tom DeLonge, who had left the band nearly a decade prior. The tour has already produced a "healthy mix of nostalgia and adoration for the recently reunited classic lineup," Variety said. It is currently in South America, where Blink-182 will play shows through mid-April.

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen was forced to go on hiatus from his world tour last year after suffering a bout of peptic ulcer disease — but now the Boss (and his E Street Band) is back. Springsteen relaunched his tour on March 19, sending a message to fans days before the show assuring them he was "going to rock you into the ground." Springsteen has since rescheduled the 24 shows he was forced to postpone, and is also slated to play additional shows in Europe and the U.S. throughout March, April and May.

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, garnering a heap of Grammy Awards and a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Her latest move is the "Janet Jackson: Together Again" tour, a name harkening back to her hit 1997 album "The Velvet Rope." The youngest child of the iconic Jackson family has mainly been touring in the United States, though she has also featured stops in the Pacific. She will perform in the Bahamas in April, then return to the U.S. in May with her first concert at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds.

Chris Stapleton

One of the biggest country music stars in the world is embarking on a U.S. tour to match. Chris Stapleton has begun his 2024 "All-American Road Show" to much fanfare, and it comes in conjunction with his third album, "Higher," being released in November of last year. The 10-time Grammy Award winner started the tour earlier this year, and will be crisscrossing the U.S. throughout the spring. This includes shows in North Dakota, Minnesota, California, Louisiana, Indiana, Florida and more. But the country star isn't limiting his tour to the spring, as Stapleton has a schedule of shows throughout 2024.

Mitski recently added additional tour dates to promote her seventh LP, "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We," from last year. This means the singer-songwriter will be performing shows in an astounding 15 cities in the U.S., Mexico and Europe from March to May. The tour is the culmination of a meteoric rise; Mitski has recently leveraged the success of her hit single "My Love Mine All Mine," which was her first song to crack the Billboard Hot 100. She is also slated to write music for a Broadway adaptation of the Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit" and counts former President Barack Obama among her fans.

Anthony Albanese among several politicians to declare free Taylor Swift tickets

Anthony Albanese accepted free tickets to Taylor Swift’s sold-out Sydney concert last month, one of several federal politicians who were gifted passes to the hotly anticipated Eras tour.

The prime minister declared “I’m a Swiftie” when the American pop star swept through Australia in February. He has now declared receiving tickets to her performance, disclosing “tickets to Taylor Swift concert in Sydney from Universal Music Group” under the “travel and hospitality” heading on his parliamentary register of interests.

Universal is Swift’s record label.

Albanese was captured on video by a fellow concertgoer at Swift’s Sydney gig, dancing along to Shake It Off alongside his fiancee, Jodie Haydon. The pair, amid a crowd of other fans, appeared to be on the balcony of one of the corporate boxes at Accor Stadium.

The sports minister, Anika Wells, also recently disclosed “two Tickets to Taylor Swift- The Eras Tour” on her register of interests, adding that she was “guest of Frontier Touring” – the promoter of the tour.

Alison Byrnes, the first-term Labor MP for the Illawarra seat of Cunningham, also attended Swift’s Sydney concert – courtesy of her husband, Paul Scully, a New South Wales state Labor MP and minister for planning and public spaces.

“My husband, Paul Scully MP, received two tickets and hospitality for the Taylor Swift concert at Accor Stadium Sydney on 25 February 2024. I attended as his guest,” Byrnes wrote on her federal interests register.

The federal Greens leader, Adam Bandt, declared four tickets to Swift’s Melbourne concert “at MCG from Frontier Touring.” His update to the register was dated Monday 25 March and uploaded to the register of interests on Tuesday after this article was first published.

Other federal politicians posted photos online attending Swift’s concerts, including Coalition MPs Andrew Wallace, Hollie Hughes and the former prime minister Scott Morrison.

Wallace’s office said he paid for tickets for himself and his family to attend a Melbourne concert; the member for the Queensland seat of Fisher ran a campaign online asking the singer to perform in his state. Hughes said her tickets were a Christmas gift from a family friend.

During the leadup to Swift’s Australian tour, when her performances were a leading news item for many media outlets, the prime minister spoke often of the American singer. On Nova radio, Albanese declared “I’m a Swiftie”. On Kyle and Jackie O’s program on KIIS FM, he said he would be attending the Sydney concert.

The deputy Liberal leader, Sussan Ley, at the time challenged the prime minister to give up his ticket to “a real Swiftie” instead.

Guardian Australia reported last month on federal politicians accepting dozens of free tickets over the summer to cricket and tennis matches, horse races and concerts from large companies, sporting organisations and alcohol brands.

Since then, more politicians have disclosed free tickets to popular events.

The Liberal MP Karen Andrews disclosed two tickets to Pink’s Gold Coast concert, courtesy of the Gold Coast Suns. Tony Burke, the federal minister for employment and the arts, disclosed a list of gifts including tickets to corporate suites for Paul McCartney and the Foo Fighters last year, courtesy of Frontier Touring and Sony Music respectively, as well as accommodation at the Woodford folk festival, and tickets to Womadelaide, Wicked and the Handa Opera.

The health minister, Mark Butler, also disclosed tickets to Womadelaide. The Labor MP Cassandra Fernando disclosed two tickets to dinner and a soccer game, courtesy of the Melbourne City Football Club. The resources minister, Madeleine King, received tickets to the Seven West Media corporate box for the WWE Elimination Chamber wrestling event in Perth.

Wells, in her register, disclosed tickets to SailGP from Australian Sailing, and two tickets to a Brisbane Broncos NRL match. The trade minister, Don Farrell, accepted two tickets and hospitality to the Kangaroo Island Racing Carnival, from marine transport provider Sealink. The shadow resources minister, Susan McDonald, disclosed domestic travel, convention registration and accommodation from the Minerals Council of Australia as she attended the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada convention in Toronto.

Madonna  has announced that she will conclude her blockbuster ‘Celebration’ tour with a free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday, May 4th at Copacabana Beach.

The show will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour.  Sponsored by Itaú Apresenta, it will mark Madonna’s first show in Brazil since 2012.

After a three-month delay due to a serious bacterial infection that the singer said placed her in a coma, Madonna’s ‘Celebration’ tour launched in London in October with a record six sold out shows at the O2, moving across Europe before coming to North America late last year.

The Celebration Tour continues tonight with the second of two shows in Dallas before making stops in Houston, Atlanta, Austin and more.  The upcoming dates also include three nights in Miami at the Kaseya Center (April 6th, 7th, and 9th) and five nights at Palacio De Los Deportes in Mexico City.

Incredible upgrade from the version 2

Ernestos321527017 - Mar 24, 2024

I have three pairs of these, having replaced my two previous Victory Tour 2's that I had for two years. These have much better support and hug my feet better giving me more confidence taking big swings with the driver. Excellent traction and I do not get sore feet at all after a long round of 18 holes. Nike made some great improvements in the looks of this shoe as well. Much better contours and the finish of the leather is a lot more appealing with the pebble finish and perforated venting. A great shoe, my favorites to wear and that is with a collection of 12 golf shoes to choose from. ...

Olivia Rodrigo's team won't allow free contraceptives to be handed out on tour anymore, says report

  • Free contraceptives will no longer be handed out at Olivia Rodrigo's North American tour dates.
  • One abortion fund told Variety the decision was relayed from Rodrigo's management team.
  • It follows the distribution of Plan B pills at the singer's show in Missouri, where abortions are illegal.

Insider Today

The remainder of Olivia Rodrigo's Guts tour will no longer feature reproductive rights groups handing out free emergency contraceptives, lube, and condoms following the widespread media attention brought on by her recent Missouri show, according to reports.

The Grammy-award-winning pop star , who has partnered with the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF) for her latest tour, has allowed local rights groups to set up booths at venues on the North American leg of her tour since it kicked off in February.

However, according to Variety , after news of free morning-after pills that the Missouri Abortion Fund distributed at her St. Louis show went viral this week , the singer's management team has requested that future reproductive rights groups refrain from giving out emergency contraceptives at the upcoming shows.

free planb at @oliviarodrigo in st. louis tonight 💓 thank you @MOAbortionFund ✨ pic.twitter.com/41sc65XxLx — kin ⸆⸉ (@cowboylikekin) March 12, 2024

Jade Hurley, the communications manager for the DC Abortion Fund, relayed that Rodrigo's camp told the NNAF that they would prefer that lubrication, condoms, and contraceptives were no longer passed out because "children are present at the concerts."

A representative for Rodrigo and the NNAF did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider outside regular working hours.

Multiple representatives of other rights groups also confirmed the news to Jezebel . Speaking to the outlet, Destini Spaeth, chair of Prairie Abortion Fund, which attended Rodrigo's tour stop in Minnesota on Friday evening, said that they had hundreds of boxes of emergency contraception ready to hand out but no longer could.

Related stories

In a statement to Rolling Stone , the Missouri Abortion Fund said that while Rodrigo had invited the groups to set up spaces in her concert arenas, "It was our decision to pass out EC."

Missouri has a near-total abortion ban

Robin Frisella, Missouri Abortion Fund's Community Engagement Director, told the publication: "While we are disappointed to learn that other abortion funds will not get the same opportunity to do the same, we are encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response."

"We can't speak to why this decision was made, but we hope this conversation highlights the work being done by abortion funds every day in states across the country. We stand by our decision to hand out EC and will be increasing our efforts to provide this to our community."

The news that contraceptives were being handed out at the concert in Missouri angered several Republican figures in Missouri, where there is a near-total abortion ban .

State senator Bill Eigel wrote on X he was "horrified" that Plan B was being given out to concertgoers and said that Rodrigo was "actively harming women in Missouri by championing abortion." He also mistakenly referred to the emergency contraceptive as an abortifacient.

As Business Insider previously reported, some Republican lawmakers in the state — including Eigel — are trying to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides reproductive healthcare such as birth control and STD testing.

Rodrigo has long been vocal in advocating for reproductive healthcare, notably dedicating a rendition of Lily Allen's "Fuck You" during her 2022 performance in Glastonbury, England, to the Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade the day before.

A portion of Rodrigo's tour ticket sales will go to abortion funds across the US through the singer's Fund 4 Good initiative, which she launched in collaboration with the tour and advocates for reproductive healthcare freedom.
