Frequently Asked Questions
Who will be covered by this policy .
The cover is for you (the HSBC Premier account holder) and your domestic partner - provided that you are both under 70 years of age on the start date of your trip - and any dependent children or grandchildren travelling with you.
Your children are also covered if they're staying with a close relative, travelling with a relative who's over the age of 23, or going on a school/college trip independently with a teacher.
Children covered by this policy must be under 23. Grandchildren covered by the policy must be under the age of 23 and don’t have to live with you.
All insured persons must be residents of the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
Do I need to inform you about any medical conditions?
Before you book your trip, you'll need to call the HSBC Medical Risk Assessment Helpline on 0800 051 7457 if in the last 12 months you or any insured person have:
- been referred to a specialist
- been admitted to a hospital
for any condition not listed on the accepted conditions list in the 'Your Health' section of the policy booklet
Before you travel, you should also tell us if there have been any changes to your health or if you've been referred to a consultant or specialist or admitted to a hospital.
Undiagnosed symptoms are not covered. There's no cover for any claim where you knew at the time you opened your HSBC Premier Account or booked your trip (whichever is later) that you or your travelling companion might be unable to travel or might need to come home early - for example if one of you fell ill.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, check to see if they're covered in the 'accepted conditions' section of the policy booklet. If not, you need to call the Medical Risk Assessment Helpline who will confirm in writing whether they can be covered.
Are holidays in the UK covered?
Yes. Holidays taken solely in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man are covered if they include at least 2 consecutive nights away from home and either pre-booked accommodation or pre-paid public transport.
Please see our definition of 'pre-booked holiday accommodation' in your policy document.
Are business trips covered?
Yes. You're covered for up to 31 days in any calendar year if you travel outside the UK in connection with an insured person’s job to carry out non-manual work. This includes administrative tasks, meetings and conferences.
We don't cover any claim in connection with an insured person’s job where the trip involves:
- manual or physical work of any kind
- working with children
- providing healthcare, policing, security or military service
- an insured person’s role as a politician, religious leader, professional entertainer or sportsperson
Can I extend the trip duration?
You may be able to purchase a policy upgrade for an individual trip. This will extend the trip duration to a maximum of 120 days.
Please call us on 0800 328 1562 at the point of booking your trip, and one of our advisors.
Will I be covered if I go on a cruise?
Yes. While this isn’t a specific cruise policy, cruises are covered as standard since they're simply another type of holiday. However, there is no cover for some items that cruise policies may specifically cover, e.g. missed ports, unused excursions, and change of itinerary.

It’s been three long years, and finally the time has come for us to dust off our passports and start packing our bags again. The threat of COVID-19 is still with us, however. So how should we choose our travel insurance to ensure we are well covered?
Protection against COVID-19
Pay particular attention to whether a travel insurance policy offers COVID-19 coverage. Possible scenarios include:
There are plans on the market that cover all the above scenarios, protecting you all the way from before your departure, to after your return home. You should choose a plan based on your specific needs.
Yet, travel insurance isn’t only about COVID-19 protections. Check to see if the scope of coverage includes the following too:
Enjoy global medical coverage with a VHIS plan
Once the borders completely reopen, you’d probably transit back into frequent traveller mode, whether for business or pleasure. You may even have plans for moving or studying abroad. If you will be staying overseas for extended periods of time, a medical protection plan that covers overseas medical expenses is a must-have in addition to travel insurance. Choosing a Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme (VHIS) that can cater to your needs is crucial. Some of the plans would protect you against medical expenses in the Greater China area, Asia or even other parts of the world. On top of the global medical coverage, there are other reasons for getting a VHIS policy:
The past three years have been a stark reminder that the future can be unpredictable. Only by preparing adequate protection for ourselves and our families can we make sure that no sudden illness or mishap would disrupt our plans.

Business Travellers: Why Annual Travel Insurance Plans are better for you
Why should you buy annual business travel insurance.
With many countries reopening borders internationally, business travel has started to resume with meetings, conferences taking place face to face. Before you or your employees take off, it is important to check if you have got the right coverage to protect the trips to cover any unexpected expenses e.g. trip cancellation, flight delays, mandatory quarantine, emergency medical care etc.
Depending on how often the trip is, it's a good idea to get an annual insurance plan that covers multiple trips, which is more convenient and cost-effective. This article will guide you through the details of buying annual business travel.
Does your corporate insurance provide enough coverage for the business trips?
You should double check with your provider and ask for the full policy to understand more about the coverage before the trip. For example, some plans cover Covid-19 related expenses but some don’t. Also, not all coverage can be extended to leisure travel that takes place before or after the business trip.
So it is best to check the nitty-gritty of the terms and conditions and make sure all needs are covered. If not, it is wise to take out a more comprehensive plan to make sure all the expenses can be reimbursed if needed.
What does Annual Travel Insurance cover?
1. Medical expenses
If the insured got an injury or sickness during the business trip and there is a need to visit the doctor or hospital abroad, the treatment expenses incurred will be covered.
2. Trip cancellations and delay
Travel insurance covers flight delay , cancellation, or disruption. Most policies provide cash allowance or cover reasonable and inevitable additional travel expenses and accommodation costs incurred.
3. COVID-19 protection
Some travel insurance offers COVID-19 protection which is vital off the back of the pandemic. It covers emergency overseas medical expenses, journey cancellation and curtailment related to COVID-19, and also provides a quarantine allowance.
4. Loss of baggage and personal items
Most policies cover lost, delayed or damaged baggage. However, not all plans cover laptop and mobile phones so it is best to check before you buy the plans. Also, if you bring expensive items along, it is important to get add-on insurance for those items.
5. Personal accident
Should there be an accident, the travel insurance will provide coverage to beneficiaries in the event of death on the trip or a sum will be paid out if a hand, foot, limb or eyesight is lost as a result of an accident.
6. Personal Liability
If the insured is involved in legal liability which causes a loss or damage to the third parties, personal liability coverage in travel insurance will be able to help with the compensation and expenses.
Tips for comparing travel insurance policies
When choosing travel insurance plans for yourself or your employees, the cheapest policy available is not always the best choice. It is wise to base your decision on your needs and you can follow below checklist:
Single V.S. Annual Travel Insurance
If your employees travel frequently , you should consider buying annual travel insurance instead of single trip insurance to save you time and money. You can save the time required to shop around for a new policy for every trip.
Add-on coverage
Other than basic cover like trip cancellation, baggage loss etc. If your employees extend the trip to leisure travel, you might want to add extra cover to get full protection on the medical expenses or personal accident for amateur high risk activities like diving . Also, off the back of the coronavirus pandemic, it's also important to buy travel insurance that provides COVID-19 coverage .
Check the limits and excess
All travel insurance covers have their own set of rules e.g. you can only get compensation if the flight delay lasts for a number of hours. Also, it is worth checking if you can make claims on flight delays that are caused by typhoons as Hong Kong is prone to typhoons. However, you will not be covered if you did not purchase the plan before the typhoon signal is hoisted-- so it is wise to buy coverage as soon as your trip is finalized.
Also, some of the coverage items like rental vehicle protection usually require excess which is the specified amount deducted from any claims that are paid out. It is important to understand these before you purchase the plan.
How long can I get my claims back?
In some cases, you are able to make claims and get your money back within a few hours if you provide the right documentation? For example, if you get MSIG travel insurance and rent a car in Japan, you could make a claim in a few hours - which is really helpful to your company's cash flow!
Are mobile devices covered?
Most travel insurance plans do not cover accidental loss of mobile devices. However, AXA travel insurance plans and Hang Seng Travel Insurance typically do!
Major exclusions
Below are some common exclusions of travel insurance and under which the coverage becomes ineligible:
War, revolution, use of military power, riot
Intentional acts including suicide or not taking reasonable efforts to minimize or avoid injury
Pregnancy, childbirth or any associated injury or sickness
Pre-existing or undeclared medical conditions
Specific medical conditions including sexually transmitted disease like AIDS or mental disorder
Alcohol or medicine related accidents, unless those are under prescription
Professional sports
High-risk activities
Unattended belongings

We are due to go on a couple of Seacations in September .
trying to get HSBC to confirm their travel Insurance aspects cover will cover the requirements that the Cruise lines are demanding currently, is proving to be somewhat tricky!
Has anyone sailed with any Cunard, Princess P and O with HSBC included account insurance?
Really don’t want to get to the port and they say it does not cover the requirement.
just looking for a bit of peace of mind, as I think it does but, but trying to get someone from HSBC to confirm this is beyond me currently?
Just looking for any confirmation of other people’s experience with insurance requirements ?

I used it on MSC without problem, different cruise line but........
If you follow this link and click "ask Aviva for confirmation of cover" you will get a confirmation that covers staycations and cruise ships, I don't know what you are looking for but I suspect this confirmation will provide what you need, it did for me on MSC.
