Corona Del Mar State Beach Corona Del Mar State Beach free

Corona Del Mar State Beach is one of the most popular shorelines in the city – and for good reason. Its calm surf makes it ideal for swimmers, and the half-mile-long stretch of sand means it's easy to find a spot to sunbathe. The beach is hugged by towering cliffs and provides a picture-perfect backdrop for a romantic date night or a family photo.

Near the parking lots, you'll find many volleyball nets for public use. The beach offers public restrooms, outdoor showers and an array of picnic tables. There are also fire pits for public use during normal beach hours (from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.) available on a first-come, first-served basis; you'll have to bring your own wood and fire starters, though.

The Wedge The Wedge

Whether you're an avid surfer, or you simply want to relax on the beach and watch the daring wave runners and body surfers, The Wedge is the perfect place to spend your afternoon. It was created in the early 1900s when a jetty was built to protect the harbor, resulting in a beach area with large waves. Now, The Wedge has some of the largest waves in Southern California, measuring up to 30 feet. The drastic conditions attract some of the most skilled surfers in the country. Obviously, it's not a place for beginner swimmers or young children because of the strong riptides and currents, but if you stick to the safety of the sand, it's a great beach to enjoy.

The beach is lined with massive homes for your admiration, and past visitors enjoyed watching the boats pulling in and out of the harbor. The Wedge also provides ideal views of the sunset and nearby Catalina Island.

Newport Beach Whale Watching Newport Beach Whale Watching

Newport Beach is one of the country's best whale watching destinations. All year round, whales migrate through this area of the ocean. In winter and early spring, you'll catch a glimpse of gray whales migrating south to give birth to their calves; they'll turn around and head north around April or May, so if you're on the water during this time you may spot some calves as well. In summer and fall, blue whales are often found swimming in the waters surrounding Newport. Some visitors have also seen humpback whales and minke whales in these Southern California waters. The occasional dolphin may visit your boat as well, especially if you book your whale watching excursion in July when the warm waters attract these friendly creatures. Simply put, the waters off Newport Beach are always alive with animals, so you're unlikely to return from a whale watching trip disappointed.

There are many companies offering whale watching trips. Prices may vary by company, but you can expect to pay between $25 and $40. For example, traveler favorite Davey's Locker charges about $42 for an adult ticket and around $36 for tickets for children and seniors; you can opt for a VIP ticket, which allows you to sit with the captain, for around $57. All whale watching boats typically include a large observatory deck, as well as indoor amenities like restrooms and snack bars. Some companies, like the well-reviewed Newport Landing Whale Watching , offer limited capacity whale watching excursions, which are more expensive, but give you a more intimate experience on a smaller boat with a maximum of 15 passengers.

Balboa Island Balboa Island free

A small, man-made island connected to the Newport Beach mainland by bridge, Balboa Island is bursting with fun activities. Marine Avenue is the island's main hub for shopping and dining. Here, you'll find independently owned boutiques, shops and restaurants. This street is home to restaurants that serve up the island's two signature treats: the Balboa Bar, which is an ice cream bar rolled in candy, and the Frozen Banana, which is loaded with toppings. For the best of the best, sample these desserts at either Dad's Donut and Bakery Shop or Sugar 'N' Spice . If you're looking to get out on the water, there are plenty of places to rent paddleboards, kayaks, sailboats and an array of water sports equipment. Bicycle rental establishments are also popular, as cycling is a great way to get around the small (only 0.2 square miles) island.

While you can drive to Balboa Island, many visitors suggest taking the ferry to avoid traffic and spend time on the water. Boarding the ferry on foot only costs $1.25 one-way for adults, and most ferries hold about 40 people. The ferries each hold about four vehicles, and it costs $2.25 one-way to board with a car. There is a sidewalk all around the island that makes walking from place to place a breeze, so you may want to consider leaving the car on the mainland. The ferry operates consistently between 6:30 a.m. and midnight every day, and a one-way ride takes about 10 minutes. It leaves from the port near Balboa Fun Zone and arrives at a public dock on the west side of Balboa Island. For more information on this destination, check out the tourism website .

Life in Newport Beach centers around its expansive harbor, which nearly encircles Balboa Island . As you stroll along its banks, you'll be in awe of the many colorful sailboats and charter boats docked there. You'll pass many yacht clubs along the way as well. The naturally created harbor is a hub of rental activity, so if you're thinking of renting a boat for the day, it's the place to go. Sightseeing boats and excursions like sunset tours also leave from this area.

Throughout the year, the harbor plays host to many marine events, including the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, which occurs annually in late April and draws hundreds of spectators from all over Southern California and beyond.

This boat yard-turned-amusement park has been in operation since the mid-1900s. Over time, more and more activities have been added, and nowadays there are enough features to keep you busy for hours.

The main attraction is the Ferris wheel that overlooks the sea and provides panoramic views of the rest of the Balboa Peninsula and beyond. It costs $5 to ride, and children younger than 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. The Ferris wheel is independently owned, so its operating hours differ from the rest of the park; it's open daily from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.

With a whopping 1032 feet to its name, Newport Beach Pier is a stunning location in the heart of the Balboa Peninsula.

Newport Beach Pier was originally named McFadden Wharf.

Finished in 1888, it was named after the landowners of the area and was used for various shipping purposes.

In 1902, the pier was sold and began a transformation for residential and recreational use.

It was rebuilt in 1940 following a hurricane and today is one of the top things to see in Newport Beach, California.

There’s lots to do and enjoy at Newport Pier.

Walk its length and explore what it has to offer, eat at the various establishments, or go fishing.

Wondering what to do and what places to go that promises exciting activities and great water in Newport Beach, California?

One of your best options is the Corona Del Mar State Beach , which is one of the city’s free things to do.

Its name is Spanish for the beautiful phrase “Crown of the Sea” and it’s one of the area’s most loved shorelines.

Corona Del Mar State Beach spans 30 acres and was properly established in 1947.

It is often called Big Corona Beach.

You may recognize it in some aspects, as it’s a common site for TV and silver screen production filming.

The gorgeous protected half-mile beach boasts gorgeous natural cliffs, a rock jetty that leads to Newport Harbor, and calm waters.

At Corona Del Mar State Beach, you can surf, sunbathe, dive, swim, and play volleyball.

3. Balboa Island

Balboa Island

Balboa Island is situated between Newport Beach’s mainland and the Balboa Peninsula.

Kayakers, paddlers, shoppers, and tourists of all kinds visit the location to enjoy all that it has to offer.

Bicycle rentals provide a simple way to travel the land.

The man-made island was once nothing more than a swamp-surrounded mudflat.

It wasn’t until the 1900s that the sandbar began to be created as the bay was dredged, moving the silt and sand to form its mass.

Today, it’s an immensely popular destination in this California city.

If you’re looking for relaxing places to go, this is a must-see!

Balboa Island is mostly residential, but areas like Agate Avenue and Marine Avenue are packed with commercial activity.

The latter is especially popular, known for delightful shopping opportunities and yummy eateries of all sorts.

There are many independently owned businesses here.

Be sure to sample a Balboa Bar, which is a signature treat of the island: a candy-rolled ice cream bar!

4. Bunnyhenge and Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park

Bunnyhenge and Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park

If you’re looking for unusual places to go in the US , you can’t go wrong with the Civic Center Park .

The Civic Center Park spans 500,000 square feet and was designed by Peter Walker and Partners, a renowned firm for landscape architecture.

Often called a museum without walls, the park is home to a notable arrangement of sculptures in a rotating exhibit.

These sculptures are loaned to the city council after being carefully selected for artistry, durability, and favor.

They are then displayed for two years, during which the public is free to view and interact with them.

But there’s another feature of Civic Center Park worth visiting: the “Bunnyhenge”.

The sculpture is made up of 16 big white bunnies.

14 of them are set facing each other in a circle while two larger, 8-foot-tall ones stand over them with vibrant eyes.

This is one of the more unusual things to do in Newport Beach, and for a top spot, it sure has been plagued by controversy!

As it turned out, the city of Newport Beach paid a shocking $221,000 for them, which made many residents quite angry.

Still, it has survived all the wrath it has endured and remains close to City Hall, stoically standing guard.

Aside from its sightseeing opportunities, Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve is especially popular among birdwatchers.

This is because it’s on the Pacific Flyway, which is a major bird migration path from north to south.

But that’s not really why this is one of Newport Beach’s most fun locations!

The gardens outside are what people really flock here to view.

Sightseeing opportunities present themselves in different themed gardens, with conservatories, patios, seasonal flowers, fountains, and more.

Over a hundred different plant species are on display at Sherman Library and Gardens.

The Hawaiian Olympic swimmer is largely responsible for the widespread popularization of surfing, which happened in the 1920s.

The 10 best things to do in Newport Beach

Explore the best things to do in Newport Beach, including a visit to Balboa Island and an afternoon strolling the local piers

Many visit the oceanfront area for a taste of opulence, but the best things to do in Newport Beach extend beyond the posh Orange County city’s tony shopping centers and country clubs. Sure, yachts, canals, and luxury cars are common sightings here, but so too are whales, waves and pristine patches of sand. Even still, Newport is one of the wealthiest places in the country (even more so than its neighboring Orange County cities) so don't expect to find much grunge in this affluent coastal town. In fact, you're more likely to see one of The Real Housewives in the flesh. While some of the most frequented beaches in Newport are Corona del Mar State Beach (great for swimming) and The Wedge (great for surfing), Newport Beach Pier and Balboa Pier also draw large crowds to the waterfront for leisure. Fun fact: while it's called Balboa Island, this man-made community is in fact a peninsula .  Situated between the surfer-filled shores of Huntington Beach and the stunning canyons of Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and its patchwork of man-made islands offer a mix of luxury living with some of the  best beaches  and best restaurants in SoCal. Experience a mix of it all with a drive along Pacific Coast Highway, and use our list of the best things to do in Newport Beach for can’t-miss pitstops along the way. Best things to do Newport Beach

Whale Watching

1.  Whale Watching

Whale watching is one of the best ways to experience the Pacific Ocean's natural beauty, not to mention the marine life that sits just below its surface. Newport is lucky enough to sit in the path of blue, humpback, and, most notably, gray whale migrations. Within the city there are a number of competitively priced whale-watching tours and, unlike other popular ports, the majority are more than mere harbor cruises.

The Resort at Pelican Hill

2.  The Resort at Pelican Hill

  • Newport Beach
  • price 4 of 4

Visit this sprawling Mediterranean-inspired, five-star resort overlooking the Pacific along Newport Coast. You don’t need to book a night to take advantage of its amenities, though, including a full-service spa, three dining options, and a 36-hole, 400-acre golf course with its own golf academy. Pelican Hill has around-the-clock butler and concierge service and is also home to one of the world's largest circular pools (136 feet).

Balboa Island

3.  Balboa Island

Of all Newport Beach’s man-made islands, Balboa is by far the most charming. It also feels more like a quaint East Coast harborfront village than the rest of Newport’s distinctly Southern Californian settlements. The first order of business: getting your hands on one of the island’s famed frozen bananas. Choose from rivals Sugar 'N Spice or Dad’s Donut Shop & Bakery ; both claim to be the originators of the chocolate-covered frozen treat. Then take a jaunt around the 1.6-mile boardwalk that surrounds the island or browse the mom-and-pop shops along Marine Avenue. Visitors to Balboa Island can enter by driving onto it via Marine Avenue, but it’s far easier—and more fun—to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the Balboa Island Ferry for a quick and scenic five-minute trip across the water.

Newport Pier

4.  Newport Pier

  • Attractions
  • Public spaces

One of two piers located along Newport’s coastline, this oceanfront lookout extends from a busy commercial district at the start of the Balboa Peninsula. Parking can be a bit tough since it’s located next to the area’s biggest—but still not big enough—municipal beach lot. Though the building at the end of the pier is currently vacant, many are hoping for a restaurant revival soon.

5.  Sherman Library and Gardens

  • Parks and gardens
  • price 1 of 4
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sherman Library & Gardens (@theshermangardens)

Bury yourself in one of 15,000 volumes about the Pacific Southwest at this library and botanical garden. The 2.2-acre gardens feature an exotic array of flora—including an assortment of succulents and a Japanese garden—as well as an on-site café called 608 Dahlia. Admission is just $5. Check their website for ongoing special events.

Balboa Pier

6.  Balboa Pier

The main attraction at the end of this pier is the original Ruby’s Diner location, a ’40s-inspired local chain. You’ll pay a premium for some alright burgers, so consider a scenic stroll along the expanse if you don’t feel like springing for a meal. Balboa Pier is located just blocks away from the Balboa Island Ferry and the Balboa Fun Zone. The pier is open for fishing, but most visitors come for the photo ops and to watch surfers below.

7.  The Wedge

Make no mistake: If you’re looking for a beach to unwind in the sunshine, there are miles of wide, sandy stretches that you should visit instead of the Wedge. But if you want to scope out one of the most notable (and sometimes overwhelmingly popular) surf spots in Southern California, this is the place. A long jetty on the eastern edge coupled with the shape of the coastline bounces waves into each other to create near-shore swells as high as 30 feet. Parking is limited to the adjacent neighborhoods, so hoof it past multi-million-dollar beach houses and through entrances on either Channel Road or M Street.

Balboa Fun Zone

8.  Balboa Fun Zone

  • Arcades and amusements

It’s no Disneyland, but it’s also a mere fraction of the price. The historic Balboa Fun Zone is currently being restored under new ownership but is still open to the public. The few carnival-esque rides here aren’t particularly memorable, but the signature waterfront Ferris wheel and merry-go-round do have some charm to them—after all, the entire amusement park dates back to 1936.

Fashion Island

9.  Fashion Island

  • Shopping centers

There’s nothing at this vast Orange County mall that you won’t find in L.A., but it’s a good one-stop-shop if you’re in the area. There are four department stores (Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus), along with an Apple Store, a Barnes & Noble and a selection of fashion stores that are a cut above the usual mall offerings (Balenciaga, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Prada). Warning: it can get insanely busy on weekends.

10.  Crystal Cove State Park

  • price 2 of 4
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Crystal Cove State Park (@crystalcovestatepark)

This 3.2-mile stretch of sandy expanses and coastal cliffs bridges the border between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. Come to Crystal Cove State Park to explore the tide pools and canyons during the day, or reserve a campsite to spend the night. The beach park also has 2,400 acres of wilderness that's popular among mountain bikers and hikers. Crystal Cove's Historic District includes 21 reasonably-priced cottages available for rent, plus the legendary Beachcomber Cafe that's open to the public.

VISIT NEWPORT BEACH SET TO DEBUT ITS FIRST-EVER SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL IN THE ARIZONA MARKET THIS SUNDAY

Pristine Seaside Destination Caps off Creative Q1 Tourism Campaign with Super Bowl Commercial Launch

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.  , Feb. 9, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Visit Newport Beach is thrilled to make its NFL debut with its first-ever Super Bowl commercial set to air on Fox10 in Arizona during the live broadcast of the Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona .

VISIT NEWPORT BEACH SET TO DEBUT ITS FIRST-EVER SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL IN THE ARIZONA MARKET THIS SUNDAY (PRNewsfoto/Newport Beach & Company)

The 15-second commercial is the final activation of the destination's multi-faceted six-week Super Bowl campaign that launched at the start of this year. The commercial stages an aspirational football watch party on a yacht in stunning Newport Harbor to showcase one-of-a-kind experiences only available in Newport Beach. The voiceover uses fun football catchphrases tailored to the Super Bowl audience that lets Arizona know Newport Beach is "wide open" for visitation year-round.

With 1 million football fans ascending the greater Phoenix area, Visit Newport Beach launched its campaign ahead of the "frenzy" to offer Grand Canyon State locals an alternative destination to "watch from here." Dominating the headlines in Arizona for months, residents were planning to rent out their homes for thousands of dollars during the Super Bowl and Visit Newport Beach realized they needed a place to go in February. Visit Newport Beach partnered with its hotel and resort partners and created exclusive hotel packages and watch parties for Arizonans that include luxury Newport Beach experiences designed to welcome them during and after the big game.

An omni-channel approach, Visit Newport Beach launched an advertising blitz in market via a "pre-game" commercial spot, billboards, digital and print ads, radio partnerships, paid social, PR, giveaways and even the sole sponsor of the Super Bowl countdown clock on ABC15 Arizona .  All tactics directed consumers to the Visit Newport Beach Super Bowl landing page which housed exclusive Arizona offers, itineraries and visitor information.

Running through February, the campaign is exclusively focused on reaching travelers in Arizona , the destination's No. 1 out-of-state visitor market and luring them to "touch down" in Newport Beach.

However, as with any destination, it’s essential to remain vigilant and practice common-sense safety precautions, such as safeguarding personal belongings, locking vehicles, and being aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas. Do You Need a Car in Newport Beach?

While having a car in Newport Beach can be convenient, it’s not an absolute necessity. The city is relatively pedestrian-friendly, especially in the popular beach areas and downtown regions. If you plan to stay within the central areas and enjoy the beach, boardwalks, and nearby attractions, you can easily get around on foot or by using rideshare services like Uber or Lyft.

Additionally, Newport Beach offers some public transportation options. The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) operates buses that connect different parts of the city and nearby areas. The OCTA also provides Metrolink train service, allowing you to explore other parts of Southern California conveniently.

However, if you wish to explore attractions beyond the immediate vicinity, having a car can provide more flexibility and ease of travel. This is especially true if you plan to visit places like Crystal Cove State Park, the Back Bay Nature Preserve, or other destinations outside of Newport Beach itself.

Visit Newport Beach Previews Local Transformations for 2024

visit newport beach logo

Visit Newport Beach, the City of Newport Beach’s official Destination Marketing Organization, has provided a rundown of business openings and transformation within the city for the first quarter of 2024.

Perhaps the most notable news is that the iconic Balboa Fun Zone, a cherished landmark in Newport Beach for over 80 years, is gearing up for what is called a “spectacular transformation.”

According to information posted on the Fun Zone website contributed by Celeste Dennerline, Historian of Balboa Island Museum Newport Beach, Edward Abbott purchased the area (from today’s 9th Street to just beyond Main St.) in 1892 for $1 an acre. He built a shack and the first pleasure dock in the bay. Known as Abbott’s Landing, he offered rides on his paddlewheel steamer, built cottages for overnight stays, and polished shells to sell inland.

The tourist trade gradually grew and then exploded when the Red Car tracks reached the area in 1906.  The Pavilion, Balboa Pier, and Balboa Hotel were all constructed at that time to meet the tourists’ needs and help local promoters sell available lots. In 1906, the area was renamed “Balboa” when it incorporated with the Newport Beach Township to become the City of Newport Beach.

In 1936, Al Anderson leased the property from boatyard owner Fred Lewis and constructed an early version of the Fun Zone. He owned and operated the Ferris Wheel and Merry-Go-Round.

The property changed ownership several times over the years. Most recently, Chartwell Real Estate Development acquired the property in 2021. Chartwell’s Operating Partner is Henry Pyle, who led the acquisition on behalf of the Pyle family, Newport Beach residents since the 1960s.

“We are excited and honored to assume stewardship of the Balboa Fun Zone and look forward to working with the city and community of Newport Beach to restore this historic 80-year-old landmark,” said Pyle in a statement upon the purchase of The Fun Zone.

Now, the Pyle family has announced a comprehensive revitalization project that promises to bring renewed excitement to the community. According to Visit Newport Beach, the family intends to preserve and build upon The Fun Zone’s rich legacy and also actively contribute to the ongoing narrative.

Crystal Cove Historic District

Crystal Cove’s Historic District is also making news. Built between 1920 and 1940, the Crystal Cove cottages offer visitors a chance to step back in time and spend the night in a restored classic cottage just steps from the beach.

This year, newly restored cottages along the district’s north beach will become available to the public to rent.

visit newport beach logo

Backstory: According to CrystalCove.org, Crystal Cove Conservancy is the nonprofit public benefit organization partnered with Crystal Cove State Park. Their mission is to restore the park, educate future environmental leaders, and protect Crystal Cove for generations to come.

The Conservancy was founded in 1999 by Laura Davick, a third-generation resident of Crystal Cove who spearheaded the effort to preserve the Historic District when it was at risk of being redeveloped into a luxury resort.

The Conservancy is now one of California State Parks’ largest public benefit organizations. So far, 28 cottages have been fully restored, providing one-of-a-kind getaways for visitors and reportedly financial resources to help protect the 4,000 acres of Crystal Cove State Park.

Restoring the remaining 17 cottages will complete the Crystal Cove Historic District renovations.

Fashion Island

Meanwhile at Fashion Island, a new Restoration Hardware will bring an 80,000-square-foot luxury shopping experience with a signature rooftop restaurant when it opens in Spring 2024. Fashion Island is also elevating its portfolio with the addition of recently opened establishments such as The Alcove, Arhaus, BYLT Basics, and Shop Common Thread. Expect exciting new arrivals in 2024, including Good American and Veronica Beard. Also now open is uber luxe jewelry concept and private club Privé from locally based Lugano Diamonds.
