History and description

In the late 19th century, Villa Park was part of a pleasure ground that consisted of a football and cricket pitch, athletics track, and a small grandstand. Aston Villa at that time still played their home matches at the Perry Barr ground, but in 1897 moved to the superior Villa Park.

Before they moved in, they had already built a new main stand and accompanied this with open terracing on the remaining sides. The stadium was bowl-shaped back then, and could hold about 40,000 people.

Aston Villa opened their new ground on the 17th of April 1897 with a friendly match against Blackburn Rovers (3-0).

In the next two decades Villa Park got gradually expanded, and in 1913 lost its bowl shape when the cycling track got removed. Plans were made to expand the stadium to a capacity of 130,000, but the First World War brought these to a halt.

Works continued after the war though, and were concluded in 1923 when the new Trinity Road Stand opened. At that time the stadium could hold about 80,000 people.

Villa Park recorded its highest attendance in 1946 when 76,588 people attended a match against Derby County.

In the next decades only smaller changes were made, which included cover for the Holte End and a refurbishment of the Witton Lane Stand in 1964.

Villa Park was one of the playing venues of the 1966 World Cup, hosting three group matches.

The stadium underwent a next change in 1976 when a new North Stand opened in place of the Witton Lane End. The new stand led to heavy debts though, and no further changes were made until the 1990s.

In 1993 the new Doug Ellis Stand opened, followed by the demolition and reconstruction of the Holte End. The transformation of the stadium into an all-seater was completed when the North Stand got fitted with seats.

Villa Park hosted three group matches and a quarter-final during the 1996 European Championships .

In 1999, it hosted the last ever European Cup Winners’ Cup final between Real Mallorca and Lazio Roma (1-2).

In 2000, the classic Trinity Road stand from the 1920s got demolished and replaced by a new stand. In recent years tentative plans have been made to expand the stadium to a capacity of 50,000 by rebuilding the North Stand, but its is unlikely that these will be executed any time soon.

Getting there

Villa Park is located toward the north of the city of Birmingham at approximately 2.5 miles from the city centre.

If arriving by car from outside the city, the stadium is best reached from the M6 motorway. Take exit 6 and follow the signs for the A38 (not the A38M). On the island turn right (A5127), and follow the signs to Villa Park.

If coming from the east, one can also take exit 7 from the same motorway, and then follow the A34 south for a few miles. Passing Alexandra Stadium make sure to stay in the nearside lane and leave the carriageway before the flyover. Follow the signs for matchday parking.

If using public transport, the stadium is best reached by train . Aston Station and Witton Station are just a short train ride away from Birmingham New Street Station. Witton Station is closest, a 5-minute walk to the stadium, whereas it takes 15 minutes to walk from Aston Station.

Alternatively, the stadium is served by bus 7 and 11. Bus 7 leaves from Upper Bull Street in the city centre.

Eat, drink, and sleep

Villa Park is located in a typical English urban area. This means that there are a few pubs around as well as some easy eating options, though if you have more time on your hands, Birmingham’s city centre might be a better option.

If you arrive by car, you could stop at the Star City shopping centre just off exit 6 of the M6. It has the typical food outlets you tend to find at a shopping centre as well as various entertainment options. The nightlife in Birmingham’s city centre is mostly located west and south of Birmingham New Street Station.

There are few hotels in the immediate vicinity of the stadium. The Holiday Inn Express located across Star City shopping centre is probably closest, but is mostly convenient if you get in by car. You can about just walk to the stadium from there.

Further toward the centre, there are a Campanile Hotel and Premier Inn . They are affordable and get good reviews, but are again most of all convenient for those arriving by car. If travelling by public transport, it is likely best to find a hotel in Birmingham’s centre, and take a bus or train to the match.

Tickets can also be bought at the same store before the start of the match. Aston Villa only very occasionally sell out.

Aston Villa have divided their home games in three pricing categories. Tickets for category A matches, the most expensive, range in price from £25.00 for a lower-tier seat at the North Stand to £45.00 for a central seat at one of the long sides. Tickets for category VV matches, the cheapest, range in price from £20.00 to £37.00.

Aston Villa organise guided stadium tours. Tours run three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and selected Sundays. Tours do not run on matchdays, the afternoon before, or the morning after a match. They generally start at 10:30 in the morning.

Villa Park …….. it’s unique and holds a very special place the hearts of the football community , It’s a very honest stadium and has stayed loyal to the English style of football ground, they could of gone down the same path as other Football clubs did , from the mid 90’s there has been many symmetrical wrap around stands/stadiums that lack character and imagination , When it comes to atmosphere, few match Villa Park and the passionate supporters. To put it short……. Villa Park is the grand old lady of football, not just here in England but worldwide . Founding fathers.

As a Villa fan of 40+ years, it has always felt special entering this great stadium. A full Holte End is a sight to behold, and when it’s in full song it takes some beating. A fitting ground for a great club!

I’ve been on most of the big grounds, old and new, but give me Villa Park any time. Which is hard to admit as a Baggie Boy!

A club followed by Prime Ministers and Kings, it’s tempting to wax lyrical about the Football Club itself alas now is not the time to talk about Aston Villa’s many sporting achievements… let’s instead focus on why this ancient ground is of universal significance. Other grounds rightly claim their own histories but no club ground can claim Villa Park’s history: quite simply this is the birthplace of the world’s most popular sporting competition and format.

For any fan of any club around the world that plays and enjoys league football, Villa Park is worth a visit. This is the birthplace of YOUR game, this is where the game as we know it burst into life…

A true british traditional football ground with a great atmosphere. Every stand is different and stands alone with its own character . The sheer size and noise of the holte end really does have to be experienced.

I’ve Visited every premier league ground following United and Villa Park is by far the best. It has character, history and a certain look to it that stands out. You can create a excellent atmosphere in the away end and the view is quality. Villa fans can be loud on occasions.

David, Canada: My wife, son and I spent a wonderful afternoon touring Villa Park. We were able to visit areas where the public normally would not be able to see. Players areas, exclusive areas, press areas etc. Walking through the tunnel was a real treat as too was being pitch side and sitting in the players' bench. Villa Park oozes history and heritage! Our tour guide, Diane, was enthusiastic and provided excellent commentary and unique insights. Pitch maintenance procedures were very interesting. A special 10% discount at the Villa Village Store for tour participants was a bonus. This tour on a Friday afternoon, followed by seeing an exciting match vs Brighton on Sunday were definitely highlights of our visit to Birmingham! Arthur was a wonderful and entertaining host and the history was well explained together with some lovely anecdotes in a nice gentle style. I have previously gone on the Barcelona & Real Madrid tours and I have to say thet the Villa Park dugout seats are a vast improvement on the Real Madrid ones! The stadium is a lovely mixture of the old and new with the (fairly) new stands contrasting nicely with some of the old stained glass windows in the Suites. A nice touch was the model of the old stadium from 1962 showing the area where the North Stand is now when it was just an open terrace with a partial grassy bank The best parts was undoubtedly when we all entered the pitch from the tunnel and they cranked up the music for us All in all a great day out and the hour and a half went way too quickly

His stories and humour really made the whole thing enjoyable and thoroughly interesting, surprising, but never dull. Finally, at the end of the 90 mins plus tour we had a very generous 3 course roast dinner, with drinks on tap.

So, upon returning to Birmingham after many years absence, I was excited and eager to go on this tour. My wife and I were in a small group of eight people which made it more of a personal and intimate experience. We were met by Mick our wonderful host and guide, who was so friendly and welcoming. He conducted our tour in a leisurely, comfortable and jovial manner. Mick went to great lengths to make us and our experience feel special and memorable. In fact we would go as far as to state, that Mick majorly contributed to our visit back to Birmingham (not just Villa Park) in a very very positive way indeed. The friendly and easy manner in which he treated us, his experience and information relating to the club and football in general was fantastic. But, it was Mick's approach and friendliness that contributed to what for us was a totally awesome experience. Since then we have returned back to Australia via other areas of Europe, where commitment and passion such as Mick afforded us, has been very disappointing. Mick's grace and courtesy will never be forgotten. Thank You Mick.....you are a true gentleman and a credit to Aston Villa Football Club.....and Birmingham. Awesome...simply awesome.

Sarah24080: We wanted to do something a little different during the school holidays. So we booked a stadium tour. Diane our tour guide was great. Very informative knew lots of villa history and a great photographer a great credit to the club and very passionate about her job. My 7 year old son loved it and loved listening to the history and seeing the dressing rooms, showers, leading us through the tunnel and lots more (don't want to give to much away) in the words of my very surprised son 'it hasn't been a good day today it's been a fantastic day!'

Not everyone enjoyed it though...

Alan John F: Poor standards of welcome and guides. No in depth knowledge of the clubs history. It seemed all the staff were unhappy with working conditions, redundancies, and lack of motivation. Just like the first team I suppose.

Villa Park stadium is in Aston, a northern suburb of Birmingham.  You can walk from the city center which will take around 40 minutes.  Alternatively, catch the train to Aston or Witton stations.  The nearest train station is Witton which is a 5 minute walk away.  Finally, both buses number 7 and 11 pass by the stadium.

As you explore Villa Park stadium the only statue on show is William McGregor.  But who is William McGregor?  He was not only the first director of Aston Villa but the man who founded the English Football League.  There were twelve inaugural members of the football league including Aston Villa.  Can you name the other eleven?  Here’s a head start, Everton and Burnley are two of them.  Lastly, Aston Villa were runners up in the first ever league season back in 1888 – 1889.

Villa Park Stadium Facts

Firstly, the capacity is over 42,000 seats.  However, the largest attendance is over 76,000 spectators which was before the Hillsborough incident when safety rules were not strict.  Of course, the stadium is home to Aston Villa but what else is it used for?  It hosted both 1966 World Cup and more recently Euro 96 matches.  Argentina, Spain and West Germany played here during World Cup 1966.  In addition, a massive 55 FA Cup semi finals were played here.  On to rugby, two 2015 Rugby World Cup final games were held here.  Famous musicians who have performed concerts here include; Rod Stewart, Duran Duran, Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi.

If I asked you where was the 2012 Community Shield was held? you’d probably guess Wembley Stadium .  It was in fact here at Villa Park as Wembley was in use for the Olympics.

What is a VIP match day experience like at Villa Park.  You’ll visit not only the VIP sections but also the corporate boxes.  Additionally, there’s also a kids section you’ll visit which welcomes disadvantaged kids from the area.

Prince William’s Chair

Prince William is perhaps the most famous Aston Villa fan but where does he sit when he visits the stadium?  As you tour the VIP areas of Villa Park stadium the guide will point out his seat.  As a matter of fact, you’re welcome to sit in it and enjoy the stadium views he does.

Attention to Detail in the Conference Rooms

Trinity Road Stand used to be one of the finest examples of Archibald Leitch architecture in the United Kingdom.  Unfortunately, this stand was destroyed and replaced with a huge modern stand.  An interesting fact is people would travel from all over the world to see this architecture.  On one hand, it’s sad to lose such a piece of history.  On the other hand, Aston Villa football club did the right thing by modernizing their stand and moving forward as a football club.  After all, they’re a football club not a museum.  However, the stained glass windows in the conference rooms have been saved from the original stand.  Finally, if you wish to see real examples of Archibald Leitch architecture, visit Ibrox in Glasgow or Craven Cottage in London.

Aesthetically Pleasing Interior

Although much of the stadium is either new or refurbished, they’ve definitely maintained a historic feel throughout.  There is no official Aston Villa museum but many historic team pictures and moments are on display throughout the stadium.

Aston Villa Dressing Rooms

A visit to the home team dressing room is arguably the best part of the tour.  Not only can you sit by your favorite players shirt but you can also visit the fitness and massage facilities.

Home Team Facilities

As you’d imagine, the shower and ice bath facilities are decorated with Aston Villa badges.  Aston Villa fans, I’m sure you’d love to decorate your bathroom like this!

Players Tunnel

Walk down the famous Aston Villa players tunnel and onto the pitch, exactly like the players.  As a matter of fact, the tour guide plays the same music as match day.  Escape’ by Craig Armstrong is the song Aston Villa play when the teams come out.  In my opinion, it’s much better than what they play at Old Trafford !  Finally, sorry about my picture, as they were refurbishing the players tunnel when I visited but it should be complete and as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of Villa Park now!

Aston Villa – Champions League Winners

Yes, Aston Villa won the Champions League trophy in 1982.  A replica of this trophy is displayed in the players tunnel.  Alongside it are the FA Cup and old League 1 trophies which they have won a massive 7 times each!  Maybe the tour guide will remind you here that neither Arsenal , Tottenham, Newcastle United nor Man City have ever won the Champions League.

Pitch Side and Dugouts

Sit in the dugouts where so many famous managers have sat.  As Aston Villa are currently a Premier League team, visitors include the best of the best such as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.  Previously, in the Championship, visitors included, Marcelo Bielsa and Frank Lampard.  Don’t forget to get a picture of yourself here with the famous Holte End in the background.  Once upon a time the Holte End was the largest Kop in England.

All post match interviews are held in the Aston Villa press room.  What’s more, you have access on the stadium tour where you can sit and pose for pictures.  Wouldn’t it be realistic if you had an Aston Villa shirt on for this picture!

History of the stadium

Villa Park has been the home stadium of Aston Villa since 1897 when the Birmingham outfit left their Wellington Road ground. It also boasts its own rich heritage and a real atmosphere.

Just a smattering of stadiums have served as the Villans’ home since Aston Villa Cricket Club founded them in 1874. Their first formal fixtures took place at Aston Park between 1875 and 1876. Wellington Road then served as their base until 1897 but plans to leave began in 1894.

Increasing issues at Wellington Road convinced Aston Villa to begin seeking out a new site to host their stadium. An uneven pitch and poor spectator conditions meant their Perry Bar site was not fit for purpose. So, Frederick Rinder led the bid to head to the Aston Lower Grounds.

Rinder masterminded Aston Villa’s move to Villa Park

The Aston Lower Grounds was originally a popular amusement park and gardens in the 19th century. It also hosted Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show in 1887 but would become the home of Aston Villa in April 1897. The Villans would beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 in the first clash there.

Aston Villa were not unfamiliar with the Aston Lower Grounds having used an adjacent multi-sport area in their formative years. Known commonly as the Magnificent Meadow, the Aston Park site also held cricket, cycling and athletic events alongside Aston Villa’s initial fixtures.

Negotiations took years before Aston Villa secured their contract to lease the Aston Lower Grounds with an option to buy it. While the ground would go on to be renamed Villa Park in the early 20th century as the stadium became more weightily associated with Aston Villa.

Changes to the infrastructure also occurred in line with the Aston Lower Grounds becoming Aston Villa’s stadium, Villa Park. Rinder continued his immense influence over the site during his tenure as the club’s chairman by overseeing the rebuilding of their two end terraces.

The outbreak of World War I curtailed Rinder’s vision for a huge stadium capable of hosting 104,000 spectators. Escalating building costs after WWI also delayed Aston Villa’s effort to erect the Trinity Road stand. They would finish the project in 1923 with new dressing rooms.

Villa Park benefited from football’s post-WWII boom

Aston Villa continued to redevelop Villa Park in the 1930s with the construction of the Holte End terrace. The Villans also benefitted from the boom that football enjoyed following WWII as attendances rocketed. They drew a record crowd of 76,558 in March 1946 against Derby.

But major changes were afoot during the 1950s and 1960s as Aston Villa installed floodlights and a roof for the Holte End. A modern cover also replaced the iconic barrel-shaped roof on the Witton Lane stand. While the North Stand later replaced the Witton End terrace in 1977.

Further major changes followed during the 1990s, too, as the Taylor Report ruled that all top clubs should have all-seated stadiums. The directive forced Aston Villa to demolish the Holte End after the 1993/94 season. It took them seven months to replace it with a two-tier stand.

Aston Villa also replaced the Witton Lane stand with a two-tier structure, which took on the name of their chairman, Doug Ellis. While the summer of 2000 saw the final piece of the first Villa Park fall as the Villans demolished the Trinity Road stand to erect a three-tier structure.

Aston Villa have plans in the pipeline to redevelop Villa Park

More plans are also in the pipeline today for Aston Villa to redevelop their stadium and see Villa Park’s capacity soar to around 60,000. The Birmingham natives have drawn up plans to demolish the North Stand for a new state-of-the-art stand, whilst adapting the Trinity Stand.

Phase one of Aston Villa’s redevelopment project will increase Villa Park’s capacity to around 50,000. The club hope to modernise their stadium, whilst also serving as a catalyst for local regeneration beside Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority.

How to get to Villa Park

Fans can get to Villa Park through a number of means with Aston Villa’s stadium located just 2.2 miles from Birmingham city centre. Its location ensures visitors can get to Villa Park from all major road networks. While various forms of public transport also frequent the stadium.

Aston Villa offer official matchday parking for fans wishing to get to Villa Park by private car. Permit holder-only parking restrictions are in force in the immediate area in which Villa Park is situated. A traffic exclusion zone is also in force around their ground for pedestrian safety.

Additionally, Aston Villa also offer free cycle storage at the Villa Village Car Park behind Villa Village House. While fans can walk to the stadium from Witton rail station in 10 minutes and from Aston rail station in 15 minutes. Birmingham Airport is around 30 minutes away by car.

Bus services also offer fans an alternative way to get to Villa Park when attending Aston Villa matches. The main routes which serve the ground are the 7, 11A and 11C but 65 and 67 stop within walking distance of the stadium. ARRIVA buses also run unique weekend game routes.

Aston Villa have called Villa Park home since 1897, though to begin with it was actually known as Aston Lower Grounds. At the time it was a sport ground that was situated in a Victorian amusement park in the grounds of Aston Hall. Aston Hall was a Jacobean stately home and, though current Villa fans might suggest that their future looks like it will resemble a Jacobean tragedy, the stadium has a storied history.

Up until the start of the First World War the perimeter of the pitch at Villa Park was surrounded by a cycling track and was the location for numerous cycling meetings and athletic events. The now defunct UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup saw its last ever final played at Villa Park in 1999, whilst the ground is also the only one in the country to host international football in three different sports.

Villa Park Seating Plan and Where to Sit

Villa Park has stands on all four sides of the stadium and a running track around the perimeter, separating the supporters from the pitch somewhat. Where you’ll want to sit will differ depending on your strength of support.

• The Holte End – Traditionally the place for Villa’s most loyal and passionate supporters to sit, The Holte End has two large tiers and a curved structure to allow for excellent sight lines wherever you sit. Built in 1994-1995, the stand has no executive boxes but there is a large hospitality suite in the concourse area.
• The Trinity Road Stand Stand – The most recently built of Villa Park’s stands, The Trinity Road Stand is the side of the ground where you’ll find the club offices and director’s boxes. It is made up of three tiers with a row of boxes in between tiers two and three. In the corner that joins this stand with The Holte End is a three-storey pavilion structure that houses the club’s corporate hospitality.
• The North Stand – The oldest of the stands in the ground, The North Stand is two tiered and has a double row of executive boxes running between the tiers.
• The Doug Ellis Stand – Another two tiered structure, The Doug Ellis Stand has more executive boxes running between the tiers. Away fans occupy the Northern end of both tiers of this stand.

Aston Villa Ticket Prices

Like most top clubs, Aston Villa operate a tiered system for their games. Matches are broken down into categories depending on the team that Villa will be hosting. Category A matches tend to be the top teams and also includes Villa’s rivals like Birmingham City.

Category B matches are usually the mid-table teams, whilst category C games will be against the newly promoted or less successful teams. The prices within the categories are then broken down further depending on where in the ground you’re sitting.

Here we’ll give you the most expensive & cheapest tickets for adults and concessions in each category. Aston Villa determine that concessions are for over 65s, 18-20 year olds, students in full-time education and members of the Armed Forces.

How To Get Aston Villa Tickets

The quickest and best way to get tickets is to visit Villa’s dedicated ticketing website. If you would rather speak to someone on the phone or are making group bookings, however, then it’s worth calling the ticket office if you’re after hospitality tickets. You may find people outside of the ground offering tickets, but these people are to be avoided.

Getting To Villa Park

Villa Park is quite easy to get to thanks to its location not far from the motorway and with train stations nearby. It’s also a friendly ground for pedestrians as the club employs a ‘traffic exclusion zone’ around the stadium on match days.

Train – There are two stations near to Villa Park. Aston Station is is about 15 minutes walk from the ground and will take about 5-10 minutes to reach by train from Birmingham New Street, whilst Witton Station is about 9 minutes from New Street and takes around 5 minutes to get to the ground from there.

Bus – The number 7 and 11 buses both stop really near to Villa Park, whilst the 65 and 67 buses both stop within walking distance of the stadium.There are also Villa Special Bus Services operated by the club.

Car – If you’re travelling from the North then leave the M6 at junction 7 before following the A34 south, then following signposts to the University Of Central England, the A4040, at which point the ground will be well signposted. From the South take the M1 to the M6 then exit at junction 6 for the A38(M). Take the first right then get onto Wilton Road from the roundabout.

By Air – Birmingham International Airport has a direct train route to Birmingham New Street where you can change to get the train to either Aston or Witton stations.

Taxi – A taxi from Birmingham Airport to Villa Park will take between 20-30 minutes and prices will vary depending on the company you use and the time of day you’re travelling. From New Street Station it will cost £8ish and take around 10 minutes, traffic depending.

Parking Near Villa Park

Aston Villa imposes a ‘traffic exclusion zone’ on match days, so you won’t be able to park all that close to the stadium. The club themselves recommend avoiding parking in residential areas, but in truth there are numerous roads you can park on that are around ten minutes walk from the ground and will be free. There are also a few unofficial car parks near to the ground where you can park for between £5 and £10.

Having spent quite a lot of time in Birmingham, I can tell you that the people of the midlands know how to have a good time. The pubs are always busy, and none more so than these three.

Just as you’d imagine for a top end football ground, Villa Park has plenty of excellent facilities off the pitch for the match going supporter. You can expect quick service from the bars and kiosks in the concourse areas and you can be assured a friendly, exciting atmosphere.

Hospitality

Given the amount of executive boxes that Aston Villa have around the ground, it’s no surprise that the hospitality options are numerous. The club offers a host of packages targeted at pretty much every budget. You can take them up on a match by match or seasonal basis.

There are 3 restaurant and 4 lounge packages available and each takes a step up in exclusivity from the last, but all should see you very well fed before the game. If you want to go all out then the Director’s Club Premium is seriously plush. A champagne reception, a private reserved table pitchside, a 5 course menu and complimentary drinks are just some of the perks here. There will also be a Q and A with a former player.

If that all sounds a bit too fancy then either the 82 Restaurant, the McGregor Lounge, or one of the Doug Ellis box’s might be more to your liking. You will get much more privacy in one of the box’s while the restaurant is a more casual affair than the Director’s Club but still offers great food and a sense of that VIP treatment.

One slightly more unique option is the Gas Lamp Premium package, because as well as all the nice extras like meals, drinks and Q and As with former players, you watch the game from behind glass at one end of the pitch rather than on the terraces. So you can enjoy the comforts of the lounge throughout the game not just before and after it.

Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and retirements, Villa Park has seen them all. The caterers have won awards and there is ample free parking near to the ground. The club can cater for parties of various sizes and you’ll also have a dedicated event co-ordinator for you to deal with directly.

Villa Park prides itself on being one of the most unique venues around for Asian Weddings as well as being a generally spectacular venue for all weddings. They also offer Christmas Party deals. There are numerous banqueting options available, too.

Stadium Tours & Museum

Tours of Villa park usually take place twice a day, Tuesday – Sunday. They are at 10.30am and 1pm. Prices are slightly higher at weekends and you can also include lunch with your ticket for an additional fee.

Tours cost £18 for adults on weekdays and £20 at weekends. Under 16’s are always £12.

As well as seeing the first team dressing rooms, the post-match interview room, and the officials’ room, you’ll also walk down the tunnel to pitch side and get a chance to sit in the manager’s seat in the dugout. Villa have also started to display their trophies, including the FA Cup, Division One Trophy and European Cup, so you’ll be able to have your photo taken professionally with one of them if you like.

They run legends tours too for £40 per adult.

About Aston Villa

Aston Villa are one of the oldest clubs in English football and are one of only five English teams to win the European Cup, or the Champion’s League to give it its current name. They are also fifth in the list of clubs with major honours to their name, having won seven First Division trophies, seven FA Cups, five League Cups and the UEFA Super Cup.

Though things haven’t been great for Villa on the pitch in recent years, they still hold the record for the number of players that have made international appearances for England at 73. That is equalled by Tottenham but surpassed by nobody.

Villa Park History

Villa Park lays claim to numerous boasts, not least of which is the fact that it has hosted more FA Cup semi-finals than any other stadium – 55 matches in all. Aston Villa moved to the stadium from Wellington Road in 1897 and as well as football the ground has also hosted boxing matches, international rugby league and rugby union matches and the 2012 Community Shield match between Chelsea and Manchester City.

There is also something of a Royal connection at Villa Park. In 1924 George VI, then The Duke Of York, officially opened The Trinity Road Stand at Villa Park. 77 years later and his grandson, HRH The Prince of Wales, opened the newly renovated Trinity Road Stand. The Prince of Wales’ son, Prince William, is also one of Aston Villa’s most famous supporters.

Future Developments

Randy Learner, Villa’s hilariously named American ex-owner, promised the fans a redeveloped North Stand that would take the stadium’s capacity to 50,000 when he bought the club in 2006. Sadly these plans never led to anything much, and ten years later in 2016 Randy had sold the club. However, the new owners upped the ante and plans are in place to grow the capacity to 60,000.

Work was supposed to begin in 2023, with the North stand being demolished and rebuilt and the surrounding area developed into a multi use area that would be about more than just football, but despite planning permission being granted there have been delays due to transport concerns.

The club are now at the mercy of the council to a point, as Witton train station needs to be updated and improved before they can break ground on their own redevelopment.

The lion has no obvious link to the club, instead it symbolizes the club’s values in form of bravery and strength. The small white star, left of the lion is there to honor the club’s European Cup title. Besides the “AVFC”, initials for Aston Villa Football Club, the lower part has also the word “Prepared” which has been a traditional motto

The save sent us to the 2006 Champion's League final. The entire CL campaign was amazing, but this specific moment was very special to all of us."

Group's favorite players:  "The majority of the votes went to Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. The way they played and the joy that people felt when watching them is what drew many of us to become Arsenal supporters."

Why we are Gooners:  "We have all been attracted to Arsenal in our own special way. For the majority of us, it wasn't a decision to become Arsenal supporters, but something that naturally stuck with us. The emotional connection that is built with the club, even at such a great distance, is so strong that it becomes in a way addicting. The way we play, the way we're managed, the entire image of the club is something that you fall in love with."

Arsenal in San Diego:  "Being one of the major English teams, we have a pretty strong fan base. Television coverage has improved dramatically and fans from all over the city are able to come watch their favorite team. People in San Diego love football and the majority of them have an allegiance to a specific club."

The gunners look to extend their unbeaten run through 2024 premier league games.

Arsenal started the weekend top but will have to beat Aston Villa on Sunday evening to move back into first place in the Premier League.

Former Gunners boss Unai Emery has, however, struggled of late to keep his Aston Villa side at the level they reached in early December when they beat both City and Arsenal at Villa Park in a remarkable week. The Midlands side have won just one of their last five league games and could have ground of their own to make up in the race for a top-four place that seems to be slipping towards. Their results against Lille in the Conference League could aid the wider pursuit of a bonus Champions League berth for English clubs but for now Villa could really do with the results domestically. Here is how you can watch the match and what you need to know:

Arsenal: Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League might have been a disappointing result given some of the quality Mikel Arteta's side showed in their quarterfinal first leg but the result ought to do wonders to focus minds at the Emirates Stadium. Defensive errors handed the visitors a way back into the tie but of late those have been the most reliable route to goal against the Gunners, who have conceded just four goals in 11 Premier League games in 2024, taking 31 of a possible 33 points in the process.

With the next game against Bayern on Wednesday to consider, Arteta could feel compelled to rotate his squad. Will the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard come into the XI? Could Jorginho do with a rest? Options are certainly plentiful for Arsenal, who had every first-team player training before Tuesday's game.

Aston Villa: The same could not be said of Villa, who will have to do without the suspended Douglas Luiz in addition to long-term absentees Boubacar Kamara, Emiliano Buendia, Tyrone Mings and Jacob Ramsey. Matty Cash and Clement Lenglet were also doubts heading into Thursday night's game against Lille. All that to a squad that is having to manage midweek football for the first time in over a decade with the Conference League schedule showing no sign of easing in the near future.

Villa have lost on five of their last six visits to the Emirates in the Premier League, a famous 3-0 win in November 2020 during the period where fans were not allowed in stadia. Emery's men do, however, have a fine record in London of late, winning six and drawing three in their last nine trips to the capital.

Arsenal could well be put through the ringer by a Villa side who have raised their game against them since Emery's appointment. However, the hosts should have the quality and energy to get the win. PICK: Arsenal 3, Aston Villa 1
