Lolly the Trolley - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)
Lolly the Trolley permanently closing after 37 years
CLEVELAND — After more than 37 years of providing rides and memories to Northeast Ohio, the wheels of Lolly the Trolley are coming to a stop for good.
Owners Sherrill Paul Witt and Peter Paul announced Friday that Trolley Tours of Cleveland, also known by most as Lolly the Trolley, will be permanently closed.
The owners cited COVID and other factors for the closure.
“Thank you all for the wonderful relationships we have had with you, the media for 37 years!! It has been our joy and pleasure to bring happy news to Cleveland and Northeast Ohio and we have always appreciated your support,” Witt and Paul announced in a joint statement.
A beloved icon since April 15, 1985, Lolly the Trolley was considered a moving local gem, covering 3.1 million miles during its 37 years on the road.
When the company was started, Cleveland didn't have the sites and tourist attractions that are known by residents and visitors alike.
Sherrill Paul Witt took a chance and provided Clevelanders and tourists with a new way to experience the city that was in the early stages of a rebirth.
“There were few people living in downtown in 1985 and there was no Rock Hall or Science Center. Baseball and football were at the old Municipal Stadium and the Flats, Ohio City and Tremont were just developing with urban pioneers working on rehabbing homes and loft spaces," the owners said. "Playhouse Square was in its infancy and the Cleveland Clinic was bringing Euclid Avenue back to life. In spite of it all, we entertained people with Cleveland’s colorful history and future predictions of what was going to come, all said with our fingers crossed!”
According to the company, approximately 2.5 million people rode the trolley.
No matter the community event or celebration, Lolly the Trolley was there. It appeared in some of the most memorable events in our city's history, including the 2016 NBA Championship Parade, the Republican National Convention, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies, World Series and so much more.
“Our company from day One has always been the people we hired from all walks of life who had a passion for Cleveland," the statement reads. "Over the years, this talented, loyal and enthusiastic family of employees helped carry our mission forward…to provide a fun, educational experience and, in the process, totally change people’s opinions about Cleveland,” Witt said. “We will always be proud of what we did to help Cleveland become the dynamic city it is today.”
The trolleys will be in town until Tuesday, May 17.

Lolly the Trolley in 'park' after 37 years touring Cleveland and beyond
The owners of Trolley Tours of Cleveland announced they will officially end operations Tuesday. Owners Sherrill Paul Witt and Peter Paul piloted the fleet of cheerful, red trolleys for sightseeing tours and special events for almost four decades.
In a release, Paul Witt said when they started, “there were few people living in Downtown… there was no Rock Hall or Science Center. Baseball and football were at the old Municipal Stadium and the Flats, Ohio City and Tremont were just developing with urban pioneers working on rehabbing homes and loft spaces. Playhouse Square was in its infancy and the Cleveland Clinic was bringing Euclid Avenue back to life. In spite of it all, we entertained people with Cleveland’s colorful history and future predictions of what was going to come, all said with our fingers crossed!”
Paul Witt estimates the trolleys have attended more than 4,000 weddings and served more than 2.5 million people. She cited COVID-19 and other factors in the decision to close, adding “It is time for us to move on to our next adventures in life.”
At one time there were as many as 15 Lollys, which was reduced to eight over the past two decades to better meet demand. The biggest parade they attended was the 2016 NBA Championship Parade in Downtown Cleveland, and the oldest celebrity on Lolly was playwright George Abbot for his 100th Birthday at Playhouse Square in 1987.

End of an era: lolly the trolley to cease operations.
It's officially the end of the line for Lolly the Trolley.
Trolley Tours of Cleveland owners Sherrill Paul Witt and Peter Paul on Friday, May 13, announced that the sightseeing and special event transportation service, which began in 1985, will end officially on May 30. It has been on hiatus for the past two years as a result of COVID and other factors, they said in a news release announcing the closing.
They said in an email that they made the announcement "with great sadness, but with pride for what we accomplished."
"There were few people living in downtown in 1985 and there was no Rock Hall or Science Center," Sherrill Paul Witt said in a statement. "Baseball and football were at the old Municipal Stadium and the Flats, Ohio City and Tremont were just developing with urban pioneers working on rehabbing homes and loft spaces. Playhouse Square was in its infancy and the Cleveland Clinic was bringing Euclid Avenue back to life. In spite of it all, we entertained people with Cleveland's colorful history and future predictions of what was going to come, all said with our fingers crossed."
They said Trolley Tours served "more than 2.5 million people including visitors and locals, from elementary, middle school and university programs to alumni events and personal events like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and family reunions," as well as corporate events, community events and Lolly's Holiday Lights Rides.
The service once had as many as 15 vehicles but eventually reduced that number to eight.
The owners estimated the vehicles traveled a total of 3.1 million miles over 37 years.

Taking Lolly the Trolley Tour in Cleveland, Ohio
While visiting a city it is always important that I take some type of tour. I like to see what a city has to offer and some of the history. Knowing what I am looking at and getting some fun facts is also important to me as well. So when I heard about Lolly the Trolley I immediately wanted to go on the tour.
Lolly the Trolley has different tours, but we took the city sightseeing tour. They have an hour and 2 1/2 hour one which is what we opted for. What was great was that the tour meet up location was very close to the Aloft Hotel we were staying at. The 2 1/2 tour is composed of many areas including The Flats , Downtown , Playhouse Square , Millionaire’s Row , Ohio City , the historic Cleveland Cultural Gardens , and much more.
One of the great things about this tour is that it starts in the afternoon. No reason to wake up at the crack of dawn. You have ample time to sleep in, get something to eat, and do a plethora of other things. I also loved that there were locals on the tour. They said they loved it and every time someone comes into town to visit they bring them on the tour.
Of course we rode around in a red trolley named Lolly. Our driver was Eva, she was pretty awesome. She really knows how to drive and whip that trolley safely around the ever-changing streets of Cleveland. Eva is also very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. The trolley was pretty comfortable, my only recommendation would be to sit on the right side. This is especially important if you plan to take pictures as many of the things Eva pointed out were on the right, I however was on the left.
This tour is all ride with an exception to one stop for a bathroom break or to just get out and stretch your legs. It is a great way to get the of “The Land” if you want to go back and do some more exploring at certain places, which I definitely recommend. Many things stuck out on this tour. I won’t give them all away because of course you have to take the tour!
Some of my favorites that stuck out were the world’s largest outdoor chandelier. Next time I am there I want to see this again. One of the houses on Millionaire’s Row that is still in existence was turned into a Children’s Museum . I would love to take a peek inside of there. Some of the houses on Millionaire’s Row were taken down because when the millionaires died they didn’t want someone else with less stature living in their house was comical.
The mural of Prince and some other murals also stood out as well. If you are a Lebron fan then seeing the huge Lebron photo on the outside of the stadium is a must. I also saw a statue of Jesse Owens . There was also the skinniest building nestled in between some larger ones. I can only imagine what the inside of it looks like.
Overall this is a great tour with plenty to see and learn. Cleveland has plenty of history and a lot to offer. I would highly recommend taking Lolly the Trolley to at the very least get a feel for the city and where everything is. I know I will definitely go back to see many of the things that Eva pointed out.

Very cool. Definitely looks like a fun way to sightsee and get to know the city
Yea it is a great way to get to know it.
The tour in Lolly looks like so much fun. What a great way to see the sights of Cleveland and learn about it’s history.
It was a lot of fun and very informative. Learned tons of things I had no idea about.

Making city trips in trolleys and trams is always a delight. I love going back in time and riding in an old-world transport vehicle is a great way to do that. The murals are so lovely, and the tip about sitting on the right side is useful.
It is a lot of fun. They had a couple of cool ones that I saw. Yes, the right side is the better one.
You managed to keep the suspense element in the post and sharing the parts that would get us more curious. I am keen to see the world largest chandelier. Seeing the Jesse Owen’s statue for the first time. Thank you for that!
Yes, you must go check it out. The statue was great. I was surprised when I saw it.
Given that you can get only one “Bathroom break”, I guess it is a tour on wheels only. I would be a tad bit disappointed if that was the case coz I like to hop on and hop off to see certain things closely. However, I guess it might make sense if you want to just get an overall view of the place.
Yea, it is. I like to get out and check things out too, but some stuff I had already seen and other things I knew I could go back to now that I know about it. Gave a great overview.

The Lolly Trolley, tour looks pretty interesting. The trolley ot course in itself looks like an experience to be enjoyed. Also it is a good orientation of the city. These kind of tours are something that we always do whenever we travel to new cities. It helps us to get a feeling of the place .
Yea, I really like getting a feel for a place. I also like learning about things so this was a great way to get an intro.
The Lolly Trolley tour looks like a city overview tour. I disliked the fact that you cant get down to explore the thing which attracted you and then hop on again while returning or something like that.
Yea, but you do get a great introduction to the city and it is easy to get to the different places they showed. I like to get off and see stuff myself, but this was cool.

Lolly trolley sounds like a cartoon character! I would like to take this tour, too, I haven’t! What one of good thing yea about this is starts in the middle of the day, cool! When we’re traveling, we’re sometime lazy to get up early, just because we want more time to sleep. ( Just like us at most times, lol! )Cleveland does seem to have interesting things to offer to tourists and travelers, that chandelier makes me curious!
I hate waking up super early sometimes. Especially when I am already tired from traveling and what not, so I was happy this was in the middle of the day. I totally agree with you. Cleveland has so much to offer that I wasn’t fully aware of till I took this tour.
Linda de Beer
Lolly the Trolley… and you’re Holly! All jokes aside, Lolly and Eva definitely give this Cleveland tour some personality. It sounds like just the right thing to get an overview of the city before deciding what you want to experience in more detail, like the Children’s Museum.
You are absolutely right. Great overview. I had already seen things prior, but it gave me more ideas of things to see and do there.

A trolley named Lolly? Haha, so cute! It does look like this tour is quite interesting, I’d love to hop on to a trolley, it has the right pace to allow you to take enough pictures and take the sights in but also stay on the move. It’s like walking, but faster and lesser tiring 🙂 Very cool!
It is cute. I enjoyed the tour. Yea sometimes walking for hours is very tiring.

I love taking trolley tours! Makes the tour feel really history – fab to know about Lolley in Ohio 🙂 And I do like that this tour is in the afternoon – I’m never awake first thing in the morning lol even when I am awake – hard to retain info from a tour when I’ve just woken up 😀 Love that there’s street art included in the tour. Thanks for the tip!
It is hard to just get up in the morning. Especially if you are jet lagged or just tired from traveling and what not. Plenty to see with Lolly.

Lolly the Trolley Tours Cleveland
CLEVELAND, Ohio – If you're looking for a great way to take in the sights and sounds of Cleveland, Lolly the Trolley offers a unique way to take a tour of the city's hot-spots.
Trolley rider George Prause from Chicago commented, “I think it’s a very interesting old city I thought the architecture was amazing the history was amazing there’s a deep culture to the city and thanks to the tour we got to learn a lot more about the city we are looking forward to the next few days here planning on visiting a few of the sites that we saw today and revisiting some of those.
“It’s amazing I’ve lived here all my life and there’s so much to do in downtown Cleveland I wasn’t aware of it. It was a great tour. I’d even do it again there’s so much to learn, said Carol Parent of Avon."
The trolley takes you on a 20-mile tour through downtown, the theater district and then makes its way to the city's museum district and wraps up the tour with a ride down the shoreline.
You know it’s warm when Lolly The Trolley opens its windows. 🙌🏼 #ThisisCLE pic.twitter.com/JyHFk6230h — DestinationCleveland (@TheCLE) April 12, 2018
Sherill Witt is the co-owner of Lolly the Trolley, and she says Cleveland has changed drastically since she opened her business 34 years ago. “People are very curious about Cleveland so they do come and they always have low expectations and they are amazed when they do visit our city”
“People just want to know get a feel for the neighborhood in Cleveland they want to know about Tremont they want to know about Detroit Shoreway they want to know about little Italy they love our museum center our by university circle and people are just amazed that you can go to 4 museums within walking distance and one of the best art museums in the world and it’s free, said Sherill.”
“When the Lolly the trolley business began back in 1985 they said they had a hard time filling the tour with useful information because there wasn’t much going on in Cleveland at that time. There were really no large venues, there was no Browns Stadium or Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, nothing at North Coast Harbour, Ohio City was just a dream.
Besides the tours, Sherill has not only given people an inside look at the city, but they have also had an impact on peoples lives.
“We also do weddings, people that we married 25 & 30 years ago on the trolley, their children are getting married on the trolley and I get a little misty when I think about it that because we are part of family’s lives."

PARMA, Ohio -- Just as Judy Garland famously sang “Clang, clang, clang went the trolley,” so are the members of the Young Professionals of Parma regarding the nonprofit’s upcoming historic trolley tour around the city.
“We’re really excited about this, because it’s a new event we haven’t offered before,” said Young Professionals of Parma member Kate Blake, an Iowa native who has called Parma home for four years.
“It’s a cool way to be able to see a lot of the Parma area, meet new people and network with other professionals.”
The Young Professionals of Parma history and sightseeing tour -- which includes onboard narration from local historian Patricia Nickols, chilled water bottles and bathroom breaks -- is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. July 13.
Providing transportation for the trolley ride is A1 Mr. Limo. The event -- which costs $30 to $35 -- is billed as an adult affair.
The evening begins with riders meeting at Stearns Homestead, 6975 Ridge Road, for guided tours through Stearns House, Gibbs House and an 1850s Yankee-style barn.
“At 7 p.m., everyone will board the trolley, which will stop by Parma’s birthplace, the Polish Village, the original firehouse and the Phillip Henninger House,” Nickols said.
“We’ll also be highlighting some local churches and historical cemeteries. Around 8 p.m., we’ll stop at the Sweeties Soda Shoppe.”
The historic trolley tour includes room for 27 riders.
“The tour will definitely highlight different areas and businesses within Parma,” she said. “It also gets people into the community. We like to highlight Parma and show the pride we have in the city.
“If this proves successful, we would be interested in doing it annually in the summer.”
