Entertainment, entertainment | review: tina fey and amy poehler return to chicago stages after 30 years, and it’s all charm.
NBC/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler launch their "Restless Leg Tour" this weekend in Rosemont and at the Chicago Theatre.
What do you call what Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did at the Rosemont Theatre Friday night?
Vaudeville? A 100-minute comedy hang? A sweet, loosely organized catch-up between Chicago-bred comics and their audience? A live dual portrait of old friends? Whatever you call it, they’re doing it all weekend, next in three sold-out shows at the Chicago Theatre, and if you couldn’t pull the trigger on the pricey tickets, or simply find a ticket before resell pirates began demanding cretinous, Taylor Swift-ish prices, I hate to say … Sometimes charm, authenticity and a distinct lack of a rigidly-executed show is enough.
Sounds like a backhanded compliment, but I promise: It’s all compliment. Their “Restless Leg Tour,” which is making a tentative tiptoe into a handful of cities this spring, presumably as a test run for grander plans, is a victory lap and reminder of how comfortably Fey and Poehler ping off each other. To the song “For Good” from “Wicked,” Fey sang to Poehler: “I do believe you make me slightly better.” And Poehler sang to Fey: “We are work friends and we see each other at work.” They would have done the actual song, Fey said, but they would have had to pay for rights, negating the point of the tour.
The beauty was in the casualness, the intimacy they somehow achieved through the touches they can’t control: Poehler’s openhearted cackle; Fey’s dyspeptic side-eye. Poehler did a terrible impression of Richard Dreyfuss in “Jaws” and gave a shoutout to Gen-X (“We remember people!”). Fey, wearing a T-shirt reading “Mother,” said being a mother was like being the guy controlling Kermit the Frog: “If you’re doing your job right, nobody should notice and you’re just a filthy hippy sitting on a dirt floor.” They referred to each other as basically colleagues. “Common law comedy wives.” “Work husbands.” They relayed this so often you know there’s a truth there and a bond that transcends it.
Whatever poignancy they generate, it lands doubly here.
They don’t know exactly when they met, but they know it was about 30 years ago in Chicago. After opening the Rosemont show in knockoff Golden Globe glitter dresses, they climbed into ’90s wigs and clothes and danced through a recounting of their Chicago years: Before a backdrop of the Buckingham Fountain, they talked about both taking Second City classes, both performing with the then-Improv Olympic and both working miserable jobs on the side. Fey, who lived in Rogers Park, worked at the front desk at the YMCA in Evanston, dodging the harassment of its residents. Poehler, who waitressed in scores of restaurants, also worked the phones for Steppenwolf, soliciting donors to donate more.
Since they couldn’t recall their first meeting, they used improv to recreate it. They asked the audience for prompts, and took them. “You had brown hair and I had blond hair,” Poehler said, “and we all know that’s the only way women can be friends.”
Again, I have to ask, what should you call all this?
Both did stand-up — and as jarring as it is to see them slipping into the familiar rhythms of the seasoned road comic (Fey used her set to mock the format), they also sort of killed. In their gowns, they slipped into award-show mockery. Fey: “Ben Affleck is not here tonight. He’s busy slamming car doors behind J Lo.” Poehler: “Chicago, home of Central Standard Time.” They rolled out on office chairs from opposite ends of the stage and, to a roaring audience, did a new “Weekend Update” segment, with guest star. (I won’t spoil the surprise, but it’s good.) At the end, in pajamas, curled into large chairs, they wound down the night with reminiscing and fielded questions from the audience.
If we have to give a name to this, call it Live Charm.
They took the idea for the tour, they’ve told talk shows, from Steve Martin and Martin Short, who have paraded their friendship in a similar show for years. (Indeed, Martin and Martin return to the Chicago Theatre in June.) It’s not a new idea. Hugh Jackman’s arena shows, which play like pleasant old-school showbiz reviews, deliver a bit of comedy, song, dancing, storytelling. But the genre only works when the performer is genuine, self-deflating and, most importantly, their fame is incidental. They were you once, in an audience, and they show delight in your delight.
As Poehler said, way back when, she froze on her bike riding through another Chicago winter, but “it was a magical time when you could make up a show on the spot — a tradition we continue to this day!”

Why you need to see Tina Fey and Amy Poehlerâs âRestless Leg tourâ coming to Clevelandâs Playhouse Square
C LEVELAND, Ohio â If you saw the âBarbieâ movie, Beyonce, Taylor Swift or âSIX the Musicalâ this summer, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Cleveland should be on your calendar. This is the âEras Tourâ for theater geeks, soccer moms and anyone looking for a night out filled with laughs.
I saw the comedy duo the way they were intended to be seen: live on a Saturday night. I will also be in the audience when their âRestless Legâ tour opens at Playhouse Squareâs State Theatre on Sept. 21 for a three-day run.
And for me, a 26-year-old who used to dream of hosting âSaturday Night Liveâsâ Weekend Update, seeing my idols on stage in Chicago in May felt like therapy.
Watching âSaturday Night Liveâ as an overweight, nerdy middle school girl growing up on the South Side of Cleveland set something on fire inside of me. I saw something in Tina Fey and Amy Poehler that I had never seen before; women being weird, loud, clever and having fun while being loved for it, for the most part.
Theyâve had their fair share of critics. But what successful woman hasnât?
They led me down a long path lined with other women to look up to: Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Kristen Wiig, Gilda Radner, Carol Burnett, Laraine Newman and more.
Itâs no surprise that the Fey/Poehler show is just as witty and ridiculous as some of their most famous impressions, characters and sketches they wrote. They donât advertise their Mom Jeans or the Woomba. And âSarah Palinâ and âHilary Clintonâ did not address the audience. Instead, the award-winning actresses captivated the crowd with an easy-going show that tries to explain how they became friends.
Each night of their tour, a different celebrity guest has made an appearance during their âWeekend Updateâ segment. In Chicago, Fred Armisen wheeled out in an office chair and gave the audience a rundown on different accents you hear throughout the city.
Each actress gave a concise stand-up set that had people in the row next to me literally slapping their knees. Poehler poked fun at her times waiting tables while waiting to make it big. Fey joked about the price of menstrual products, yelling âP****â expensive, yâall!â to the rafters of the Chicago Theater.
There were costume changes, music, dancing, a Q&A section and, of course, improv.
If you didnât know, Fey and Poehler got their start in Chicago while performing at the Improv Olympic, now the iO Theater, and Second City. The duo are not sure when they officially met but they were sure it was during an improv class.
When I was in high school, my parents surprised me with tickets to a Second City show while in town visiting colleges. I wore a blazer, because thatâs what Tina Fey and Amy Poehler wore while hosting âWeekend Update,â and had the time of my life imagining my heroes strolling up the steps to enter the theater.
When I moved to the city for college, I started taking improv classes one week after moving into my dorm. There, I found other women from different backgrounds who wanted the same thing as me; friends and a fun creative outlet.
And although I didnât end up at 30 Rock, I wouldnât be a writer without seeing Tina Fey and Amy Poehler do it first.
The âRestless Legâ tour isnât just a comedy show. Fey and Poehlerâs tour is an inclusive, vaudeville-style celebration of friendship and empowerment.
Tina Fey & Amy Poehler perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, and 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, and 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Playhouse Squareâs KeyBank State Theatre. The showâs are sold out but a limited number of VIP tickets are available for $436.50 via playhousesquare.com.
Tickets are also available on the secondary market on various ticket-selling sites.

Tina Fey Talks Being on Tour with Amy Poehler: "We're Having So Much Fun"
"It's like a paid mom's vacation away," Mean Girls' Fey told her former "Weekend Update" co-anchor Jimmy Fallon, providing a very funny update on her Restless Leg Tour with Amy Poehler.
Former Saturday Night Live cast member Tina Fey reunited with her former " Weekend Update " co-anchor Jimmy Fallon on January 10, paying a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk about the 2024 Mean Girls musical adaptation. During their catchup session, Fallon asked about Fey's current comedy tour with their former coworker and friend Amy Poehler.
How to Watch
Watch The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC weeknights at 11:35/10:35c and next day on Peacock .
"We're having so much fun," Fey told Fallon of her Restless Leg Tour with Poehler, which kicked off in 2023. "Because, basically, it's like a paid moms vacation away. We go on a plane, we go someplace, we go to a nice hotelâand all we do is mom stuff all day. It's like: 'You know what? I've heard there's a wonderful museum here.'"
They'll often enjoy "a nice brunch" before hitting the stage, too. "It's exactly like whatever Chappelle and Rock are up to on the road," Fey joked.

"And then after the show, I'll be like, 'I don't want to get a drink, do you?' And she's like, 'I don't either. Good night.' And then we go to bed, and we're so happy," Fey said with clear delight.
Restless Leg Tour: What is the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler show about?
So what can people expect at a Restless Leg Tour show?
Stories, banter, and more, Fey told Fallon. "It's a lot of different thingsâthere's joke-jokes, and question-and-answer, and improv." Fey and Poehler have certainly had the practice onstage: Even before they both joined the SNL cast, the two wrote and performed comedy in Second City's touring company in the 1990s.
"How are the audiences?" Fallon asked.
Great, Fey says. "A lot of times, it's Gen X women, like us," she added.
"Sometimes, we do a 4:00 p.m. show, and, like, those are our people. They are the best audiences: They are there. They are sober. They are ready to laugh. They have already looked at Waze for how long it's going to take to get home. They have, like, a little bag from the HomeGoods they hit on the way to see us," Fey joked. "But they really are awesome."

As for the rowdiest city, that honor goes to Fey's hometown.
"We played Philly right before Christmas. And guess whatâwhat a surprise, right?âPhilly was the rowdiest of any American city," Fey told Fallon.
"We were at The Met, which was beautiful. But in this beautiful balcony, there was what I assume was a bachelorette party, or maybe just a gang, I don't know," Fey said. "And they just kept yelling at the stage a lot." When security finally came to kick them out, "they were like, 'Yeah. Yeah, you're right. We overshot it.' Like, they knew."
This path of conversation led to a very funny exchange that found Fey trying, once again, to teach Fallon how to talk in a Philly accent. "You can't do it, bro," Fey told Fallon.

We want to go to there.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s ‘Restless Leg Tour’ is picking back up on Thursday, Sept. 21 for a 22-show leg that will send the comedic duo all over North America up until mid-January 2024.
âWhen you think about the ways people could be spending their money right now, itâs gratifying and heartwarming that people are like, âYes, thatâs the night out that we want,ââ Fey told The Hollywood Reporter .
âBecause, for me, I donât want to go to anything. I never want to go out.â
However, when you see these last-minute prices to catch the former Weekend Update anchors live, you just may want to whip out your wallet and head to their live show.
At the time of publication, our team found some tickets going for as low as $33 before fees on Vivid Seats.
Not a bad price to catch a show that USA Today says includes “video montages of their greatest hits, improv; stand-up; and, most rewarding, a Q&A session staged on two sofa chairs with Fey and Poehler in their pajamas.”
Other shows on the run have seats starting anywhere from $50 to $190 before fees.
Want to find out how much tickets cost at the show closest to you?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more below.
All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.
They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.
About the âRestless Leg Tourâ
Each and every show on the âRestless Leg Tourâ is unique for the veteran improvisers.
âIf you come to a show more than once, you are going to see a different show the second time,â Poehler shared with The Hollywood Reporter .
âWeâre always working on new material. We want to make sure that people feel like the showâs for them. But there are some things that have been working really well, that we keep coming back to, and itâs fun to keep tweaking to see if we can make it better and better.â
As noted earlier, expect the Weekend Update desk for a segment of topical jokes as well as a Q and A.
What else will you see on the tour?
As Poehler said no two shows are the same â the best way to find out is live.

The duo will be stopping in Austin, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and more
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are keeping the laughs coming with seven new dates for their “Restless Leg Tour.” Starting this September and running through January 2024, the Saturday Night Live alumni will stop in Cleveland, Philadelphia, and a number of cities in the West.
The new leg will begin on September 21st at the State Theatre at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, followed by stops in Denver, Austin, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia before closing out in Portland on January 13th. Check out the full list of dates below.
Update: The comedy duo have announced new shows in 2024 .
Tickets are available via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.
“We had so much fun on the road, we decided to do more shows,” Fey said in a video announcing the dates.
The first leg of the “Restless Leg Tour” this past spring was a hit with fans, and sold out. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter , Fey said “After so many years of making single-camera television and movies, hoping someone alone in their house laughs at it, it’s fun to be in the room where they’re laughing.”
In the same interview, Poehler indicated that the new run of dates will feature new material. “I feel proud that if you come to a show more than once, you are going to see a different show the second time,” she said. “We’re always working on new material. We want to make sure that people feel like the show’s for them.”
This past February, it was announced that Fey and Tim Meadows would reprise their roles for the upcoming film adaptation of the Mean Girls Broadway musical.

Comeback tour: why we should applaud Netflix for saving Girls5Eva
The whipsmart Tina Fey-produced sitcom was dropped by Peacock after two seasons yet itâs making a triumphant return and we should all be grateful
V ery quietly, without much publicity or promotion, Girls5Eva appeared on Netflix last week. For those of us who havenât kept their eye on the ball, this came as an immense surprise. Because as far as we were concerned, Girls5Eva was dead. At the end of its second season a year and a half ago, the showâs original platform Peacock announced that it would not renew the show.
And we made our peace with that. Written by Meredith Scardino, a storied writer with credits on SNL and The Colbert Report, Girls5Eva at times seemed almost too beautiful to live. A sitcom about four middle-aged women determined to reform their noughties girl group and recapture a flicker of their old fame, it was not only dense with every form of joke imaginable â never has a show revelled quite so much in the background sight gag â but at times weirdly touching. Produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, it shared an innate DNA with 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It was fast and precise, and boasted a murdererâs row of talent.
Some of the cast you knew would be good. Busy Philipps is as reliable a comedy performer as you are ever likely to find, with a face elastic enough to convey a full spectrum of confusion and disgust, and Paula Pell has spent years looking for a breakout vehicle like this. But others were a total coin toss. The ostensible lead of the show was the earnest piano balladeer Sara Bareilles, a woman who did not seem like a natural fit for screwball comedy, and yet turned out to be brilliant.
And then there was RenĂŠe Elise Goldsberry, best known for playing Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, who was absolutely revelatory as the absurd narcissist Wickie Roy. Itâs absurd that you can be in Hamilton and then find a star-making role, but thatâs exactly what Goldsberry did with Girls5Eva. If you were reluctant to watch initially, itâs worth it just to see the levels of mania she is able to hit.
And now you have another chance. Itâs slightly surprising that Netflix picked up Girls5Eva. Long gone are the days when Netflix would swoop in and rescue any vaguely beloved show that looked like it might be in trouble. Now it has a habit of cutting shows off in their prime, unless millions of diehard fans are prepared to dedicate their entire lives to relentlessly pestering executives for a renewal. And Girls5Eva definitely did not have that. It had fans, yes, but it was a show for adults with busy lives that didnât leave any room for annoying letter-writing campaigns.
But here we are. Girls5Eva is back, and more or less as good as it ever was. The comeback season is structured around the groupâs first tour following their new album. We find them in residence at Fort Worth, where they have fallen into a rut of fan service, singing long renditions of one song about the town, beefed up with tracts from Wikipedia and chants of âFuck Dallasâ. Itâs comfortable but unfulfilling work, and they need to break out.
The ensuing tour takes them to Wickieâs home, where the group learns the truth about her hardscrabble upbringing (spoiler: her parents are good at Scrabble, which is hard) and visit a rich fan to be confronted about the casual insensitivity of their early-noughties hits. Itâs just as quick and absurd as it ever was. One joke about tooth whiteners might be the best we see on screen all year.
Which isnât to say that itâs perfect, of course. The new season has got a little too giddy about being on Netflix, and has become improbably dirty in the process. Itâs jarring the first time a character says âdickâ, purely because we had 16 episodes where nobody did that, but itâs soon followed by a kaleidoscope of filthy language. I canât remember an American show that uses the C-word so readily (including once in a musical number). Which isnât to say that itâs morally wrong, but the series sits in such a heightened, sunny, day-glo space that the swearing can take you out of the world a little. Also, this might just be me, but the return of Girls5Eva has made me ever so slightly resentful that Netflix didnât also decide to renew Tina Fey and Robert Carlockâs other lost masterpiece, Great News.
But these are quibbles. Girls5Eva is back, and in this media landscape we should treat it as the miracle that it is. Now itâs up to Netflix to keep making more of it.

Amy Tintera Adds a Different Note to the True Crime Podcast Novel
In her first book for adults, an author brings a fresh approach to the tale of an amateur sleuth and an unwitting subject.

Elisabeth Egan is an editor at the Book Review and the author of âA Window Opens.â
Podcasts have elbowed their way into novels â and onto the best-seller list â with a zeal thatâs becoming ⌠familiar. In the past few years, Rebecca Makkai , Denise Mina , Lisa Jewell and Holly Jackson have all written fiction that turns up the volume (not sorry) on episodic storytelling, usually having to do with true crime. OK, we get it: Nancy Drew had her blue notebook, trusty convertible and loyal sidekicks, Bess and George. Modern sleuths have pop filters, sound booths and rapid-fire ads for BetterHelp and SimpliSafe.
Thankfully, Amy Tintera adds a fresh note to the mix in âListen for the Lie,â which shifts the focus from podcaster to accused. In the court of public opinion, Lucy Chase was long ago convicted of murdering her best friend, Savannah âSavvyâ Harper, in Plumpton, Texas (not a real place, but âall the locals know each other and attend the same church,â so you get the idea).
The problem is â and hereâs another plot device thatâs getting a little bit long in the tooth â Lucy doesnât remember what happened the night Savvy died. She canât recall the wedding they both attended, nor can she explain why she was found the next morning, wandering down a local road, still in her blue dress.
Enter Ben Owens, who trains his mic on her story, determined to crack the case. His interest all but guarantees Lucyâs life sentence by a jury of listeners.
âI was obsessed with Serial, like everyone else,â Tintera said in a phone interview. âI enjoy true crime podcasts but I also have a lot of conflicted feelings about them.â Sheâd read up on Amanda Knox , who spent four years in jail in Italy for the murder of her friend and roommate, Meredith Kercher, before being acquitted. This tragedy started to unfold in 2007, well before the podcast boom, but still in the era of trial by magazine cover and talk show.
âI had been following her throughout the years and watching how her life has been shaped by public opinion,â Tintera said of Knox. What would it be like to be the subject of such intense scrutiny? While she devoured true crime podcasts, she had a nagging feeling of guilt: âI thought this would be an interesting concept to explore. And maybe the host of the podcast I created would have some of those conflicted emotions about the case he was investigating.â
Tintera added, âI also wanted to have a character who only had memories of loving her friend, while everyone around her was saying, âNo, you didnât. You secretly hated her.ââ
