How Sober Cruising Became a Thing — and Made Mocktails on the Water Chic

These cruise lines are serving non-alcoholic drinks, and elevating the "mocktail" in the process.

These days, zero-proof cocktails are on the rise just about everywhere, including at sea. At first blush, nonalcoholic drinks and cruises may seem to be unlikely bedfellows, but more and more passengers are eschewing booze while vacationing at sea. “Demand for NA drinks is way up the past couple of years,” says Ana Esteves, the vice president of hotel operations for Lindblad Expeditions .

In response, Esteves says, the line is spending as much time crafting zero-proof cocktails as it is perfecting recipes for traditional drinks. High-end ingredients like fresh herbs and seasonal shrubs are bringing complex flavors to spirit-free creations such as the Tropical Zana Zana, which combines heirloom-carrot juice, vanilla, and dill.

Lindblad is just one of several cruise lines polled by T+L that have seen increased demand for nonalcoholic offerings — ones that go far beyond the typical carbonated soft drinks or straightforward fruit juices and smoothies. While terms for these thoughtful beverages abound — “mocktail” may still be the most popular — there seems to be a nearly universal uptake of the trend.

Brian Cicioni/Travel + Leisure

Celebrity Cruises director of beverage operations Daniele Salamone says the line has seen a surge in interest when it comes to zero-proof cocktails. One guest who sailed aboard Celebrity Beyond back in March said the bartenders had no problem making an alcohol-free version of her favorite lemon lavender martini. It's available to anyone who asks. Two favorites on board Celebrity ships are the French Influence and Moroccan Iced Tea, though there are a slew of creative mocktails at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud , too.

Celebrity is currently charging $30 per day (plus a 20 percent service charge) for the zero-proof package. In addition to zero-proof cocktails, that package includes fresh juices, frozen smoothies, and specialty coffees and teas. Compare that with the classic package at $89 per day, and you’d save around $500 over the course of a seven-day cruise (once you factor in the service charges). Celebrity Cruises also offers a Mixology 101 class at the World Class Bar that can be tailored to non-drinkers as well.

New line Explora Journeys makes a point of stocking zero-proof spirits on its Explora I , such as Ceder’s, Ovant, and Seedlip, says the line’s senior lead of food and beverage services, Thibaut Briançon. Venues on the ship also offer nonalcoholic French Bloom sparkling wine, Briançon notes. And the company is at work developing specific NA drink pairings for certain dining venues aboard.

Other lines, including Princess Cruises and MSC Cruises , a sibling brand to Explora, offer NA drink packages that are similar to (but more affordable than) those that cover beer, wine, and spirits.

Holland America Line and Oceania Cruises both serve a wide variety of nonalcoholic cocktails; the Oceania Vista , in particular, has a full lineup of mocktails made with Lyre’s products at its wellness-oriented restaurant, Aquamar Kitchen. On many Royal Caribbean International ships, it’s  possible to request booze-free alternatives from the Bionic Bar, the robot that shakes up umbrella drinks.

While the shift is driven by consumer demand, it’s also about inclusivity, says Salamone. “We’re always trying to personalize service,” he notes. “Zero-proof cocktails help people to not feel left out.”

For most trips, yes.

Usually. If it is an All-Inclusive trip, we will indicate such.

All-inclusive means food, drinks, activities and entertainment are included in the cost of your trip.  Flights, transfers  &/or gratuities are not included, however.

The majority of guests are members of a 12 step program, but it is not a requirement. Many spouses & partners are not members join us on our Sober Vacations and have a blast.

You are absolutely allowed to bring your spouse/partner if they are not sober.  We are not the alcohol police, and have not yet had an instance where someone’s drinking caused a problem for the group.

We have two different types of trips – Sober Vacations and Sober Villages. Sober Vacations are a group within a  resort/cruise with other guests around us that are not in program. We still have daily 12 Step meetings and stick together for excursions and meals. Our Sober Villages happen annually each Winter (usually January or February) and these are full buyouts- meaning you will be at a resort with 500-600 fellow sober people. All bars/mini bars are wiped clean of alcohol and instead replaced with juice, soda, coffee, tea, and energy drinks. Our Sober Villages have daily jam packed schedules with 12 step meetings, al-anon meetings, attitude adjustment workshops, recovery yoga, trivia, scavenger hunts, and more! So, depending on what you prefer, you should choose what vacation suites you and your sobriety the best.

You do not. We ask for a deposit when you make your reservation. Once confirmed, you’ll receive an email with a personalized link to your reservation.  At any point, you can make payments to your account, or you can pay it all off at once.  As long as the trip is paid off 90 days before your departure, you can pay at whatever pace you are comfortable with.

Since the summer of 1987. We’ve had over 200 Sober Vacations since then.

The Los Angeles Dodgers is the correct answer.

No. After years of offering flights, we have found that it is both easier & cheaper for you to arrange your flights yourself. Bear in mind that most destinations/hotels have standard check-in times of between 3p – 4p and check out between 10a – 11a.  We are happy to offer advice or assistance when you are purchasing your flights. We recommend googleflights.com.

That’s okay.  We have been successfully matching roommates using our patent-pending roommate matching technology since 1987. In 35 years, we’ve only had eight fatalities out of over 8,000 matches. Which translates to over a 99% satisfaction rate!

We do not control the culinary options on any of our trips. So, each vacation will be different, but we generally choose resorts and experiences that offer a wide range of quality food. That usually includes options for people with even the most restrictive diets.

Yes! We describe our trips as a vacation…with meetings. On our Sober Village there are 5 scheduled meetings each day. On other trips, there are usually between 1-3 meetings a day. If you are on a trip, and you want to start a meeting, you are free to do so.  We just ask that it not conflict with any of our scheduled meetings.

Absolutely not!  Meeting attendance is at your discretion.

Depends on the trip. Our Sober Villages have between 450-700 people! Some trips are smaller, more intimate experiences.

We adhere to the policies of the destination to which we are traveling – if it is their policy that incoming travelers be vaccinated then we adhere to those recommendations. We do not set the policies for each destination, that is determined by their individual governments.

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance especially in this new travel landscape with Covid-19. We have a partnership with Allianz Travel Insurance. Please visit their website to sign up www.allianztravelinsurance.com – our ACCAM Number is: F019519

As we are a sober travel agency, we can offer trips that other travel agencies cannot – specifically trips that are geared towards the sober traveler.

Hi there I love cruising, but it’s expensive. Since I don’t drink, I was hoping that the cruise lines that offered alcohol – free cruises would be cheaper. You didn’t mention this possibility, so maybe they don’t offer a discount. I am one of those people that want to get my moneys worth. My in-laws could easily drink $60 worth of alcohol a day. My husband and I are 60 years old and it’s not enjoyable for us to be around drinkers. We are open to cruising anywhere in the world. What would you suggest for us?

Sober Spirits for an Alcohol Free Cruise: How we’re spicing up our mocktail menus.

Way back when, the term “mocktail” was something to be snickered at, it represented a lame alternative, a drink that lacked personality and creativity, and alcohol. Now, however, mocktail stock is through the roof . Mocktails aren’t just non-alcoholic drinks designed to make teetotalers happy and give children something to sip on (not that you’ll find kids on our cruises) — they’re craft mixology creations in their own right. Our restaurants and bars serve up mocktails that require just as much skill to make as an Old Fashioned, and no, we’re not just talking about Shirley Temples and Arnold Palmers.

Best Sober Cruise for Non Drinkers

At Virgin Voyages, we recognize the value of quality mocktails. Not just for sober passengers, but for drinkers who just want a break from the booze. That’s why many of our 20+ eateries onboard have separate mocktail menus with carefully-curated creations. And if you have a favorite mocktail that’s not on the menu, our trained mixologists can make whatever you’d like. Whether you’re looking for the best cruise line for non drinkers , or just want the occasional mocktail in addition to boozy bevs, Virgin Voyages offers a sober cruise experience that doesn’t sacrifice the fun.

Cruise Ship Restaurants with Non-Alcoholic Drink Options

While all of our eateries offer non-alcoholic drinks, the Test Kitchen is home to one of our most forward-thinking mocktail menus. We worked with professional bartender Julia Momosé to curate our alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails — and there are some key ingredients we focused on to create our non-alcoholic offerings. Many of our drinks offered in our cruise ship restaurants incorporate cashew, in the form of a light syrup, which adds a tropical element to drinks and compliments seafood dishes particularly well. Apples are also widely used throughout our non-alcoholic drink menu. Both fruity and acidic, they carry rich flavors and clean notes, and go well with elements of honey and elderflower. Finally, keep an eye out for drinks using Seedlip Garden 108, a unique non-alcoholic ingredient with notes of English peas and hay. It’s often paired with Japanese steamed green tea and a bit of honey.

In addition to Test Kitchen, and our other eateries, you can also get a non-alcoholic drink experience at our Afternoon High Tea Service at Sip Lounge. While some may opt for champagne, there are so many teas to keep your taste buds tingling you won’t miss the bubbles at all. Try our Jasmine Cloud, a classic jasmine tea with a vegetal flavor, or our Panna Chiya, a big leaf green tea from Darjeeling. Our Mint Blend is a cooling, refreshing blend of spearmint and peppermint, and Sheva Hibiscus Rose is not only alcohol free but also caffeine free, known for its tart hibiscus bite.

Onboard Non-Alcoholic Drink Options

If you’re looking for some inspiration for what to order at the bar — apart from our delicious menu options, there are literally an endless variety of options. All your favorite alcoholic drinks can be made virgin-style, like virgin piña coladas (made with coconut milk and cream), moscow mules (made with grapefruit instead of vodka), and bloody marys (with tomato juice, Worcester sauce, and Tabasco). You can also order a tried and true mocktail like a Shirley Temple, Roy Rogers, or Arnold Palmer.

If you’ve taken a few sober cruises and are inspired to craft your own non-alcoholic creations at home, we’ve got you covered. Charles Steadman, our very own Director of Food and Beverage Experience, laid out some key strategies for mocktail making in an interview with Quench List. “One common mistake to avoid when making non-alcoholic cocktails is neglecting flavor balance,” he said. “Sweetness can easily overpower the drink, so avoid excessive use of sweet ingredients. Incorporate acidity from citrus juices or vinegar-based mixers to counterbalance sweetness. Experiment with bitters, herbs, and fresh ingredients to add complexity. Finally, always taste and adjust the drink as you go, following any recipes you have as guidelines but adapting them to your concept or event.”
