8 Wineries Near Williamsburg, VA for Your Next Wine Tour
Sharing is caring!
I love finding wineries to try on my travels so good thing there are plenty of wineries near Williamsburg, VA. On my recent trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg , I was able to try one winery. I knew I had to come back though and hit a couple more on the return trip!
You can try one of these spots or take on the Williamsburg Tasting Trail where there are twelve different stops at wineries, breweries, distilleries, and a meadery.
While you’re in the area make sure you try these incredible Williamsburg restaurants !
If you’re solely after the wine then do the Colonial Wine Trail instead. It consists of five different wineries stretching from just north of Richmond to Williamsburg.
If you are just spending a weekend in Williamsburg then you may not make it to many of these but you should also check out some of the Williamsburg breweries too.

Williamsburg, VA Wineries Map
Williamsburg winery.
If you are a wine lover visiting Williamsburg, then Williamsburg Winery at Wessex Hundred is a must. You’ll drive through a residential area before you arrive at the vineyard where the driveway follows the vines.
The colonial look has been embraced here just like what you’ll find throughout the town. Make a reservation at the Gabriel Archer Tavern – though they don’t accept reservations on Saturdays between 12 pm – 3 pm so it is first-come-first-served then.
I had the red wine flight and loved each one that I tried. We also ordered a charcuterie board and the Turkey & Brie sandwich. One of my top 10 favorite sandwiches for sure.
They have live music some weekends from summer through fall at their 1619 Wine Pavilion or you can grab a flight or glass at their main tasting room. They also have a satellite tasting room in Merchant’s Square at Colonial Williamsburg.
Highly recommend coming here for brunch on the weekend!
Time From Williamsburg : 10 minutes | Address : 5800 Wessex Hundred, Williamsburg, VA | Site : Williamsburg Winery
Saudé Creek Vineyard
You’ll find a large tasting room at this vineyard that is very open and airy. Lots of seating options on the patio or under the wraparound porch if you’d like to sit outside and enjoy the view.
They have food trucks on the weekends but also allow outside food to be brought in. They have plenty of picnic areas to enjoy on a nice day.
They have lots of options to choose from so all the wine lovers should be able to find something they like!
Time From Williamsburg : 35 minutes | Address : 16230 Cooks Mill Rd, Lanexa, VA | Site : Saudé Creek
New Kent Winery
In a gorgeous brick building with wooden accents you’ll find New Kent Winery along with Talleysville Brewing Company.
They have a great balance of white and red wines with only one sweet wine right now – Sweet Virginia. My personal favorite was the Cabernet Franc.
You can choose from a wonderful light fare menu serving things like charcuterie, shrimp cocktail, and BBQ sliders. We had the charcuterie board (big enough for 3-4), loaded potatoes, and a BBQ sandwich.
There is outdoor seating only right now but if you want a shaded spot it is highly recommended that you make a reservation. This is another spot where you can find live music on the weekends.
This place gets very crowded on weekends so make sure you come early. Many people combine a visit here with Saudé Creek Vineyard since they are so close together.
Time From Williamsburg : 37 minutes | Address : 8400 Old Church Rd, New Kent, VA | Site : New Kent
Gauthier Vineyard
This hidden gem is only open Friday – Sunday so make sure you plan accordingly. They are located on a working farm and you couldn’t ask for a more beautiful setting.
The tasting room has a nice porch and patio area where you can enjoy your wine and food. They serve brick-oven pizzas Fridays and Saturdays and then chicken wings on Sundays. They even have oysters a few Sundays out of the month!
They have a nice mix of dry and sweet wines so you can easily find one that you like.
Time From Williamsburg : 27 minutes | Address : 5000 Farmers Dr, Barhamsville, VA | Site : Gauthier Vineyard
Jolene Family Winery
You can reserve a lakeside lounge tent here and honestly that’s all you need to know.
Truly though, this is such a serene setting. The tasting room is refreshing and modern and there is plenty of space outdoors to sit. You can even bring your own blanket and take it out under the pine trees.
They have food trucks and live music on the weekends to enjoy. Though they don’t have as many wines to try as some of the other locations, each one is absolutely fantastic.
Time From Williamsburg : 47 minutes | Address : 2750 Pocahontas Trail, Quinton, VA | Site : Jolene Family Winery
Upper Shirley Vineyards
Sitting right on the banks of the James River, you’ll find this vineyard and restaurant is a real treat.
Order a glass or flight and sit out on the veranda overlooking the river. There isn’t a more peaceful spot than that.
The wine selection is great but if you want the full experience then you should eat at their restaurant where you can pair the wine with some delicious food.
Time From Williamsburg : 50 minutes | Address : 600 Shirley Plantation Rd, Charles City, VA | Site : Upper Shirley
Hampton Roads Winery
This winery is also located on a working farm but this one raises Red Angus cattle. Visit this winery and you’ll be able to feed goats and watch them climb the World’s Tallest Goat Tower.
They have a nice variety of wines to sample and the farm theme is continued inside the tasting room. They have stable stall doors in the tasting room that separates the gift shop from the wine bar.
The owners are incredibly friendly and always try to make people feel welcome. Who doesn’t want to drink wine and feed goats though? PLUS you can take the Jamestown Ferry to reach this one.
Taking the ferry does add an extra layer of planning to this one though so make sure to check the ferry schedule .
Time From Williamsburg : 58 minutes | Address : 6074 New Design Rd, Elberon, VA | Site : Hampton Roads
Silver Hand Meadery
So technically this isn’t a winery, but it’s close enough so I had to include it! Mead is the oldest form of alcohol as it’s made from fermented honey. So instead of grapes being the primary ingredient it is honey instead.
Reservations are recommended but you can walk in and get a spot at the bar or outside if space is available. It’s a cute place though with a honey and bee theme of course.
When tasting mead it follows the same principle as wine, some people will love it and some hate it. I am always nervous about meaderies because I really didn’t like my first one.
However, I loved Silver Hand. The mead tasted very similar to wine but had a different flare. I especially liked their fruity meads.
They also offer honey tastings but these are popular so definitely make a reservation for those. There was one happening when I visited the tasting room and it looked so fun.
Time From Williamsburg : 4 minutes | Address : 224 Monticello Ave, Williamsburg, VA | Site : Silver Hand Meadery
Wineries Near Williamsburg, VA Recap
There are so many fantastic wineries near Williamsburg and I’ve only included ones under an hour drive!
One that is barely over one hour (1 hour and 2 minutes) is James River Cellars Winery. It’s the only winery on the Colonial Tasting Trail that isn’t on this list.
With so many options to try you could spend a few days exploring all the wineries! Don’t forget to try some of the amazing restaurants in Williamsburg either though.

Thank you for the lovely write-up on Gauthier Vineyard Winery. We have had so much fun – and met so many marvelous people here at the winery. We work hard each day to keep our family working farm a haven from daily stress and grind of urban life. At Gauthier you can watch the herons fishing at the lake, see hawks and eagles soar overhead, or gaze at the horses out in their paddocks. It’s truly a place to relax and unwind. Again, thanks for your kind words in describing our little part of the world!
Love it! Of course, I always love supporting local, family-owned businesses.

Sip and Sample along the Williamsburg Tasting Trail
There’s a new way to experience Greater Williamsburg, but one could say that it’s as old as this historic region. While early settlers were building forts and establishing their presence in the area, they also brewed their first beers and planted their first vines. They believed that alcohol had many beneficial purposes. Besides being a clean source of water, they believed it had healing properties and provided energy to the body. One could say that the Williamsburg area is not only the birthplace of America, it’s where we first learned to drink.
In the last year, many new producers of fine alcoholic beverages have been opening their doors and welcoming patrons to imbibe. This has allowed visitors and locals a chance to experience high quality, handcrafted beverages produced by pioneers in their field. The enjoyment of these beverages is both a social and flavorful experience. Enter the Williamsburg Tasting Trail . This one-of-a-kind experience is a great way to explore the best alcoholic beverages in the Greater Williamsburg area.
The beauty of the tasting trail is that award-winning wine, excellent brews and more are all centrally located in the Greater Williamsburg area. Newbies and connoisseurs alike create their own tasting trail experience. Explore the deep history of Virginia wines stretching back more than 350 years. Discover Williamsburg’s growing craft beer industry. Or, if you want it all, take in a sampling of everything—wines, beers, meads and spirits. Visit one or visit them all, it’s up to you! And because each location has been carefully selected, you know that you are sampling the best of the best.
Visitors to Greater Williamsburg are raving about the tasting trail. This is the perfect opportunity to try something new or indulge in a decadent extravagance. Plan a romantic getaway with your spouse. Or make it a relaxing weekend with friends. This is also your chance to pick up a few bottles of excellent wines, brews and spirts to take home as gifts (or keep for yourself).
Establishments of the Williamsburg Tasting Trail
The venues chosen to be a part of the Williamsburg Tasting Trail were carefully selected. Each winery, brewery, distillery and meadery chosen had to display a dedication to their craft, constantly perfecting and improving their methods. They also had to meet the highest standards in their ingredient selection. Not only have these establishments perfected the art of making these amazing spirts, they’ve also shown a desire to expand their repertoire through creative new processes and flavors.
Let’s start with the wines…
Start your journey at The Williamsburg Winery , the largest winery in Virginia. Serving classic, European-style wines, the Williamsburg Winery is known for its award-wining vintages. A tasting experience here will also include beautiful views, a delicious meal at one of the winery’s dining venues and possibly an overnight stay at Wedmore Place, a charming hotel with a European feel. Williamsburg Winery even has a 1,300-square-foot tasting room and wine bar in Colonial Williamsburg’s Merchants Square. Visit the location and enjoy a tasting flight on the picturesque outdoor patio.
Click here to read more about The Williamsburg Winery .
Heading north will take you to Saudé Creek Vineyards next. Enjoy live music every weekend. Saudé is the perfect place for a mellow, relaxing experience with your closest friends. Take in awe inspiring views of the scenic Pamunkey River from their wrap around porch. Incredible varietals and a warm and welcoming atmosphere are always found here.
The opulent feel of New Kent Winery will give you a taste for the good life. Drink a dusky merlot while taking in the historical buildings, constructed with century-old reclaimed materials. Just north of Richmond is James River Cellars Winery . With a distinctive Virginian flavor, this family-owned winery has a wide selection of wines that you won’t want to miss. The last stop on the trail takes you to Upper Shirley Vineyards , on a dazzling riverside estate in Charles City. The winery boasts 19 acres of vineyards that produce about 3,000 cases of award-winning wine per year.
Next, the beers…
With 16 beers on tap daily, visitors are sure to find something they love at Alewerks Brewing Company . Be sure to grab a delectable half-pound soft pretzel with your lager. The Virginia Beer Company knows that nothing goes better with an ice-cold brew than local food and corn hole.
Then there’s the experimental Brass Cannon Brewing Co. Brass Cannon has come a long way since its humble beginnings using a four-barrel brewing rig built by hand. Today, in their Williamsburg location, Brass Cannon uses a 20-barrel brewing system to craft their unique beverages on a much larger scale in less time. Take a trip to their tasting room and try their popular Langrage Line—small batch brews with unconventional yet delectable combinations. Brass Cannon also offers year-round traditional ales, seasonal selections and special releases.
Billsburg Brewery is a destination brewery and event venue in Jamestown, dedicated to the artisan craft of small-batch brewing. Williamsburg’s newest brewpub, Amber Ox , pairs creative cuisine with craft beer, that is brewed on site, while providing a casual setting to sip and savor.
The great thing about these breweries is the ability to sample. You don’t have to settle for just one beer choice. Most locations offer a flight of beers so that you can taste the diversity of flavors and find something you love.
Various and sundry spirits…
Whisky, bourbon, gin, rum and mead—the final locations on the Williamsburg Tasting Trail offer high quality spirits. Pay homage to the past at Eight Shires Distillery , formerly known as Williamsburg Distillery. This venue uses 18th century techniques and recipes to produce spirits with historical significance. While there, be sure to sample the only bourbon in the world made with Indian corn.
Next, head over to Copper Fox . The handcrafted whiskies are like none other in the world—with malted barley smoked in American fruitwood. Williamsburg’s first meadery, Silver Hand Meadery , introduces contemporary spirit enthusiasts to the ancient honey-based fermented drink, mead.
Drink Williamsburg Tours
These amazing locations can all be visited without having to find a designated driver. Drink Williamsburg gives locals and guests a chance to tour these distilleries, breweries and meadery. Transportation, tours and tastings are all included in the Drink Williamsburg Experience ticket. Their craft alcohol adventures are great for single riders, groups and private parties.
In an effort to promote safety, Drink Williamsburg will pick up and drop off guests in groups of five or more, if they’re within three miles of downtown Williamsburg, for free. They also offer themed events each month, singles outings, couples nights and more. If you want to create your own tasting trail, the Drink Williamsburg bus can be scheduled for private parties. For more information or to book your tour visit DrinkWilliamsburg.com or call 757-818-9511.
It may be difficult to experience every taste on the trail, so plan ahead and plot your tasting experience. All visitors are encouraged to drink responsibly. It may be wise to include a designated driver in your tasting trail adventure, or grab an Uber or Lyft. You can also call locally owned Cardinal Cabs, 757-345-5557, that way everyone in your group can experience the trail fully.
The Williamsburg Tasting Trail is an amazing way to taste and experience the remarkable flavors of Williamsburg. Please enjoy yourself safely; do not drink and drive. For more information visit WilliamsburgTastingTrail.com .
