Northeast India is undoubtedly one of our favourite places and we keep going back there again and again. Sometimes it is the colourful festivals and the smiling locals, while at other times the stunning landscapes lure us in visiting the eight northeast states. Our Tripura tour was totally an impromptu decision. We were in Mizoram and had a few days spare. While Agni was inclined towards Assam, I was more interested in exploring the delights of Tripura tourism. Quite naturally, the man’s inclination was superseded and we were off to visit the offbeat as well as the tourist places in Tripura . At the end of our trip, we were simply ecstatic to discover this gem of Northeast. So here is a complete Tripura travel guide that will help you plan your trip to Tripura.

Tripura has been on mind ever since I had read “Rajarshi” by Rabindranath Tagore. It has been one of the oldest princely states in ancient India and the remnants of the olden days are still left in the state. The buildings and architecture have a regal touch to them and the people are also quite proud of their history and lineage. We had quite less number of days to spend in Tripura considering the amount of time we spent at Mizoram. But we utilized these days to the full and made use of the excellent Tripura transport system in our travel. Tripura is one of the northeastern states that have an excellent local transport system as well as good railway connectivity. Our journey towards Tripura started from Silchar, the quaint little town in Assam.

Where is Tripura located?

Tripura is located in one of the extreme end of Northeast India and has been so long away from India’s popular tourism circuit. The third-smallest state in India, Tripura shares its border with Bangladesh more than it shares with the other states of India. Tripura is surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh, while Mizoram and Assam shares border in its eastern and northeastern side. With only one highway connecting the state with the rest of the country, Tripura remains cut off from the rest of the country. While there are some very beautiful palaces, temples and archaeological sites in the state, very less is known about them, even to Indians. Nevertheless, Tripura is immensely beautiful with a large area of forest cover.

History of Tripura

Myths, legends and anecdotes shroud the origin of the Tripura. The place finds mention in the Hindu epic Mahabharata and the Puranas as well as in the edicts of King Asoka. Interestingly, an intermingling of myths and realism plays an important part in the life of Tripura and its people. Many scholars have tried to delve into the past to decipher about Tripura and her people. The search is still going on.

Well, Tripura is claimed to be one of the oldest princely states in India. The rulers claim to have descended from King Yayati of Lunar dynasty, who finds mention in the epic Mahabharata. King Yayati’s successors were King Bavru, King Tripur, King Trilochan among others. The oldest state annals ‘Rajratnakar’ states that King Bavru conquered the countries up to river Baitarini in Orissa adding a portion of Burma to his kingdom. King Tripur and King Trilochan were contemporary kings of King Yudhisthira of Mahabharata.

If we look into history, then the land was ruled by the Twipra Kingdom of the Tripuri peoples whose history dates back before 65 AD when they migrated from western China. The history of the Tripuri Kings has been chronicled in Rajmala which states the rule of 186 kings of the land till the present time. Rajmala was written sometime in the 1400s.

The tales of the earlier kings are veiled in legends. It is usually believed that King Ratnamanikya started using the royal title of “ Manikya ” in the thirteenth century. The last King was Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur who reigned for the period from 1923 to 1947. He was well-loved by his subjects. He expired on May 17, 1947. Maharani Kanchan Prava Mahadevi, wife of the late king signed the Tripura Merger Agreement on 9 September, 1949 in New Delhi on behalf of her son Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya in accordance with the consent of her late husband Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya. Thus the native princely State was merged with India on 15th October 1949.

When we visited Tripura, honestly we had not known much about the state. We had only known about Unakoti, the capital city Agartala and Udaipur. Once we were there, Tripura unfolded its beauty gradually. We had only 4 days with us and obviously wished we had more days in hand. So here is a list of places to visit in Tripura.

Agartala, the capital city of Tripura is the second-largest city in Northeast India after Guwahati. But the city has a relaxed pace that is unlike most of the capital cities of India. The city is congested, but the pace of life is slow. The city holds on to its heritage and that is seen in the buildings and other structures. The most iconic attraction of Agartala is the Ujjayanta Palace located right in the heart of the city.

Ujjayanta Palace was built by King Radha Kishore Manikya in 1901 AD. The white building is a stunning example of Indo-Saracenic architecture and used to be the royal palace of the Tripura kings. Today the palace houses the state museum having various interesting exhibits.

Ujjayanta Palace is surrounded on 4 sides by 4 temples – Laxmi Narayan Temple, Durga Bari, Jagannath Temple and Umamaheshwar Temple. It is said that the King wanted to start his day by taking a visit to these temples.

Other places that you can visit in Agartala are the Chaturdash Devta Temple, Gedu Miyan Mosque and the Heritage Park that has the miniature of all the important attractions in Tripura.

Udaipur was the erstwhile seat of power of the Tripuri kings and was formerly known as Rangamati. Today, Udaipur is known as the “City of Lakes” as well as the “City of Temples”. The main attraction of Udaipur is the Tripura Sundari Temple, locally known as the Matabari. The temple was built by King Dhanya Manikya Dev in 1510 AD. The temple is revered among the Hindus and is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti peethas of Hindu worship.

Kalyansagar Lake is located just at the back of the temple and adds to its aura. In Tripura, you will find that each temple will have a lake near its vicinity. The lake is the home to tortoises and is venerated by the locals.

The other places of interest in Udaipur include the Bhubaneshwari Temple , the ruins of Rajbari and of course the Udaipur Railway Station . The Railway station has been newly constructed and is an attraction in itself. It is modelled after the Tripura Sundari Temple. White in colour, the station complex looks impressive and the interiors are also well decorated.

How to reach Udaipur: From Agartala, you can either take a bus or train to Udaipur. You will get buses to Udaipur from Nagerjala Bus Stop in Agartala.

Neermahal is perhaps the most beautiful and elegant architecture in Tripura. Do not miss this place on your Tripura trip. Neermhal is located in Melaghar, about 25 km from Udaipur town. Nerremahal literally means the water palace and is located right in the middle of the Rudrasagar Lake. Yes, you have to take a boat to reach Neermahal. The stark white structure with a red base looks spectacular and imposing even from a distance. Yes, I feel short of adjectives when I visited Neermahal.

Neermahal was built by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya in 1930 AD as his summer residence. The palace was clearly inspired by the Mughal style of architecture. You can visit Neermahal from Udaipur or you can also stay at Melaghar.

How to reach Neermahal: Melaghar is about 23km from Udaipur. You will get buses from Udaipur as well as Agartala towards Melaghar.

Unakoti is one of the main reasons I wanted to visit Tripura. The thought of seeing huge stone sculptures on the face of mountains really excited me. Unakoti literally means “one less than a crore.” There are a number of legends about Unakoti and how it came into being.

Unakoti is a popular Shaivite pilgrimage of the Hindus. There are a number of rock-cut bas-relief images on the hill face, the most impressive one is the 30 feet image of Lord Shiva known as Unakotishwar Kal Bhairav. The other impressive statue is that of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Durga. The entire place is surrounded by greenery and forests. Visiting Unakoti had been one of our highlights in Tripura.

How to reach Unakoti: You can reach Unakoti from Agartala either by train or bus. You can take a train from Agartala to reach Dharmanagar, a small town 20 km from Unakoti. You can stay at Dharmanagar and make a trip to Unakoti. You can also take a bus from Agartala and reach Kailashahar, 10 km from Unakoti.

Both Dharmanagar and Kailashahar have decent hotels and guest houses.

Unakoti remains open from 8AM – 5PM everyday.

While we had known about Unakoti from before, we had not known about Chabimura. We came to know about the place after seeing an advertisement for Tripura Tourism Department. And we were completely bowled out. I knew that whatever happened, we have to visit the place.

Chabimura (mountain of pictures) is also known as Devatamura (mountain of Gods) and is located in Amarpur in Gomati district of Tripura. The place is a rare combination of nature and history. There are a few panels of images carved on the steep rocky walls of the hill along the Gomati River. These rock carvings are made on vertical rocks at a height of 250 metres. The best part is that you have to take a boat ride on the Gomati River to view the colossal panels.

The boat will take you through the river that is surrounded on both sides by dense vegetation. It was a surreal feeling to take a boat ride on the Gomati River. The first panel lies immediately on the right as you will start the boat journey. Finally, you have to travel downstream to see the final image of Devi Durga as Mahisasurmardini. Chhabimura was truly a revelation for us, another very strong reason for falling in love with Tripura.

How to reach Chhabimura: To visit Chhabimura, you have to reach Amarpur. Take a bus from Agartala or Udaipur to Amarpur town. From there take a local auto or car to visit the riverfront at Devatamura. From there, a boat ride on Gomati will take you all the way to the Mahisasur Mardini image.

Jampui Hills

Jampui hills run from north to south of the state in the eastern border of Tripura. It is the highest range in Tripura bordering Mizoram and stands at an altitude of above 3000 feet. Jampui Hills is known for its beautiful landscape and charming weather. The hills are inhabited by the Lushai Mizo tribes and the Reang tribes.

Different season offers a different view of the Jampui Hills. From October to December, the orange orchards on the hills are in full bloom and the entire region is painted in orange. Come March, the hills are full of beautiful and colourful orchids. The orchid season stays up to May. The rainy season between June to September is undoubtedly the most romantic one. There is greenery everywhere and misty clouds roll over the hill range.

The sunrise and sunset from the hilltop is also a sight to behold. The highest peak of Tripura ‘Betlingchhip’ falls in this hill range at an altitude of 3600 feet. You can get a panoramic view of Mizoram, Chittagong hill tracts and various other hill ranges of Tripura.

How to reach Jampui Hills: The place is 220 km from Agartala.

Dumboor Lake

This is another destination in Tripura that has completely bowled me over. Dumboor lake is also located in Amarpur subdivision. The lake looks like a dumru (a small drum-like instrument said to be used by Lord Shiva) and hence got the Dumboor Lake. The lake is 41 sq km in area located on the confluence of River Raima and Saima and has about 48 islands in it. The small islets look like emerald green dots on the blue waters of the lake.

When we first reached Tirthamukh (that is what the place is called) and went to the Dumboor Lake, the first sight disappointed us. We had covered a long way from Agartala and the last bit of road was truly in bad condition. We felt that all the trouble was not worth it. After all, it looked like just another lake. We are personally not so fond of boating and so decided to give it a skip. Also, this is such an offbeat place, hardly any tourists visit here. We both were the only people there. A boat ride would cost us Rs2000! Usually, the boatman takes 10 people on a boat, so it becomes Rs200 per head. But there were no other tourists, so the entire amount was to be borne by us if we took the ride.

As I said, the first sight of Dumboor Lake did not impress us, so we decided not to take a boat ride. But a few locals constantly urged us to take the boat ride. They told us that we were missing out on some wonderful experience. Fortunately, another group of tourists came by at that time and they too wanted to take a boat ride. So with a bit of misgiving, we decided to go for the ride.

And thank god we did. Because Dumboor Lake turned out to be one of the most beautiful lakes I have visited. The nondescript lake suddenly turned out to be a ravishing beauty just as we rode the boat for a few minutes. The lake is simply vast, the water is totally blue in colour dotted with a number of emerald green islands. The boat ride turned out to be simply spectacular. I was reminded of our boat ride at Inle Lake of Myanmar.  The boat took us to an island that was perhaps developed as a picnic spot. There is construction with rooms and toilets, but now all lying abandoned and uncared for. We stayed for about 15 minutes on the island and were back to the mainland.

The entire episode took about 2 and a half hours. And we were really happy that we finally took the boat ride. We would have really missed out on this place otherwise. At Dumboor Lake, we really wished that we had a drone. I am sure that drone pictures would turn out to be marvellous. And to be honest, if I again had to visit Dumbor Lake, I would pay the Rs 2000 to take the boat ride and explore the lake.

There is a hydel project near the lake from where the River Gomati originates. This area is called Tirthamukha. A big fair is held here every year on Pous Sankranti (falls on 14-15 th January).

How to reach Dumboor Lake: Dumboor Lake is located in Amarpur district in Tripura. We could not find any direct local transport to the lake. We took a bus from Udaipur and reached Amarpur town. Buses to Amarpur are available from Agartala as well. From Amarpur, we hired a car to visit Dumboor Lake, which is about 40 km from Amarpur.

Pilak is another interesting archaeological site in Tripura that is a treasure house of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. We were quite interested in visiting Pilak, but again time was a constraint for us. The sculptures excavated in Pilak are believed to belong to 8 th and 9thcentury AD. There is a huge statue of Avalokiteshwar and Narasimha found in Pilak that looks quite impressive. We heard there are several statues and sculptures found in the area of different Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Pilak festival is held here during the month of December.

How to reach Pilak: The nearest railway station is Jolaibari. You can take a train from Agartala and reach Jolaibari. From Jolaibari, Pilak is just 2 km. you can also take buses from Agartala or Udaipur to Jolaibari.

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is said to be the biodiversity hotspot of Tripura and the home to the famous spectacled monkey or Phayre’s Langur. But we were a bit disappointed with our visit. The Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of about 18 sq km, but the place is actually a bio complex having a botanical garden, zoo and eco-park. Tourists are actually not allowed to enter the wildlife sanctuary area and can only enter the zoo.

The zoo definitely has a large number of animals like leopard, clouded leopard, jungle fowl, civets, barking deer, wild pig, lions etc and a healthy primate population of spectacled langur, rhesus macaque, pigtailed macaque, capped langur, slow loris and hoolock gibbons. But all the animals are kept in captivity. We simply roamed around the zoo for some time looking at the people visiting the zoo rather than the animals. The spectacled langur is the state animal of Tripura and is found in the zoo. If you are lucky, you might see a few langurs in the wild.

Visit this place only if you are fond of zoos.

Kamalasagar and Kasba Kali Temple

Kamalasagar is located about 30 km from Agartala city near the Indo-Bangladesh border. Kasba Kali Temple is a red coloured temple standing in a serene location. The Kamalasagar Lake stands just in front of it, adding to its charm. Just beyond the lake is Bangladesh. The place is unique in itself. One can feel an inner calm in this place. We sat below the huge tree in front of the lake. At the same instant, while a devotional bhajan was being played in the temple, we also heard the distant sound of “azaan” coming from our neighbouring nation. It was at that time we could feel the sanctity of the place.

The ancient name of the place was Kamalagarh and Koilagarh. Maharaja Kalyan Manikya after defeating Surja, the then ruler of Bengal built a fort in the area and commissioned the construction of the temple. A township gradually developed surrounding the fort and Koilagarh came to be known as “Kasba” (meaning town). The construction of the temple was ultimately completed by Maharaj Dhana Manikya. He also dug a huge lake in front of the temple and named it Kamalasagar after his wife Kamala Devi.

Presently, Indo-Bangladesh border Haat (market) is held at Kasba near the temple which is also a huge attraction for tourists. The Haat is held every Sunday between 9.30AM to 3.00PM

Very recently, the remains of a Buddhist stupa was discovered at Boxanagar in the Sepahijala district of Tripura. The discovery of the Stupa, Chaityagriha, monastery and other Buddhist structure at Boxanagar have brought into front another aspect of art, architecture and history of Tripura that was hitertho unknown. Excavations went on from 2001-2004 when the massive red brick structure was unearthed. It is believed that these archaeological remains belong to the 6 th century AD when Buddhism found a hold in this area.

We had not visited Boxanagar due to lack of time, but We intend to visit the place in our next visit to Tripura.

How to reach Boxanagar: Buses are available from Nagerjala bus stand in Agartala to Boxanagar. The distance between Agartala to Boxanagar is about 44 km. You can reach Nagerjala Bus stand from Agartala town by auto and buses.

Mahamuni Pagoda

Mahamuni Pagoda located in Manubankul is a recent addition in the tourist places in Tripura. This is a Buddhist shrine located about 134 km from Agartala. The shrine draws people from our neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Japan.

How to reach Manubankul: The nearest railway station is Jolaibari. From there, take any shared transport to Manubankul.

Akhaura Integrated Checkpost

We were quite surprised to know that there is an integrated checkpost right near the Agartala city. We were driving in the busy market area and in the next moment we were looking at the border checkpost! The Akhaura Checkpost at India-Bangladesh Border was jointly inaugurated in November 17, 2013 by Union Home Minister of Indian and his Bangladeshi counterpart. The checkpost has been created to facilitate easier movement for goods and passengers across the Indo-Bangladesh border. It is the second-largest trading Indo-Bangladesh trading centre after Benapole-Petrapole in the Bongaon region of West Bengal.

But what is interesting here is the flag-lowering ceremony that is held here every evening . The flags of the two countries are lowered down in a co-ordinated ceremony by the military personnel of both the countries. It is said that a Beating retreating ceremony like that of Wagah Border (India-Pakistan border) is done here too. We have not been to Wagah, so do not know what happens there.

At Akhaura, the military personnel move in a coordinated manner at the sound of trumpet and beagle, one of them lowers down the flag and then the head shakes his hand with his counterpart in Bangladesh. The entire ceremony can be seen by people from both India and Bangladesh. You can take photographs of the event, but professional videography is strictly not permitted.

The entire programme occurs in a very coordinated manner. After it gets over, there is a general sense of emotional bonding between the people of both countries. They smile at and greet each other cheerfully, and even take selfies. Well, it is good to see so much bonhomie between the neighbours!

How to reach Akhaura ICP: Just take any auto or car from Agartala to reach Akhaura Checkpost. The ceremony starts at around 4.45PM and goes on for about 15-20 minutes. Do carry any of you ID cards with you.

Our Tripura Trip Itinerary

Our Tripura trip had been a very short one. We merely stayed in Tripura for 4 days. But we utilized these days to the full. As we were coming from Mizoram, we had taken shared sumo from Aizawl to Silchar. From Silchar, we decided to take the train to Tripura. Shared sumos are also available for Silchar to Agartala, but a train journey is always more comfortable.

So we took the Silchar – Agartala passenger from Silchar. But instead of travelling all the way to Agartala, we got down at Dharmanagar. Our Tripura tour thus started from Unakoti. Here is a detailed itinerary of our Tripura tour.

Day 1 | Silchar – Dharmanagar (by train)

We took the morning train from Silchar and reached Dharmanagar by noon. We stayed at a hotel near the main market area. We thought of visiting Unakoti that afternoon itself but later decided to visit there the next morning. We stayed at Hotel Panchabati in Dharmanagar.

Day 2 | Dharmanagar – Unakoti – Dharmanagar – Udaipur

We hired a car from Dharmanagar to Unakoti, explored and got awed by the bas relief structures of Unakoti and then came back to Dharmanagar by the same car. The car took Rs 1000.00 for the entire trip. You can also take a shared jeep going from Dharmanagar towards Kailasahar and get off near Unakoti.

From Dharmanagar, we took a passenger train to Udaipur at noon. We reached Udaipur in the evening and stayed at the Gunabati Tourist Logde just behind the Tripura Sundari Temple.

Day 3 | Udaipur  – Neermahal – Udaipur

In the morning we explored the temples of Udaipur and then took a bus to Melaghar to visit Neermahal. After Neermahal, we were back at Udaipur.

Day 4 | Udaipur – Amarpur (Dumboor Lake & Chabimura) – Udaipur – Agartala

We took a very early morning bus from Udaipur to Amarpur (1 hour journey). We wanted to visit both Dumboor Lake and Chabimura in a day, as we were in short of time. At Amarpura, we could figure out how to reach Dumboor Lake. So we hired a car and went towards Dumboor Lake (40 km approx from Amarpur). After that, we returned to Amarpur and visited Chabimura (9 km from Amarpur market). You can get local auto from Amarpur that will take you to Chabimura.

After a day filled with adventure, we returned to Udaipur and took a late train to Agartala. Unlike the other northeastern states, we found Agartala awake and functioning all well quite late also.

Day 5 | Agartala

This day was totally devoted to Agartala. We visited the Ujjayanta Palace, Gedu Miyan Mosque, Sepahijala WLS, Kamalasagar and in the evening went to Akhaura Checkpost to see the flag down ceremony.

Day 6 | Agartala – Kolkata

Our brief Tripura trip was over. We wish to come back again to Tripura and explore the other attractions here.

Tripura Tourism | How to reach Tripura?

Agartala will probably be your first stop in Tripura tour. Agartala is well connected by air from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Imphal, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Railway in Tripura is quite good. Agartala is well connected by railways from Howrah, New Delhi, Guwahati and Silchar.

You can also reach Agartala by road. Overnight buses are available from Guwahati as well as Shillong and Siliguri. Guwahati is about 587 km from Agartala and the journey is about 24 hours. Shared sumos are available from Silchar in Assam. Silchar is 250 km from Agartala.

Incidentally, Tripura is also connected by regular bus service to Dhaka in Bangladesh. The journey time to Dhaka by road is about 4-5 hours (distance is only 150 km), quite lesser than the time required from Guwahati.

Tripura Tourism | Getting around Tripura

Tripura is one of the northeastern states that can boast of better road conditions. The main roads and highways are all in excellent conditions. Only when it becomes remote that the roads become worse. All the major towns of Tripura are well connected by public buses. You will get buses from Agartala to Udaipur, Sarboom, Dharmanagar, Amarpur etc. The bus fare is also quite nominal. Bus fare from Agartala to Udaipur is Rs50 and the distance is about 50 km.

Buses from Agartala run from Nagerjala Bus stop. From Agartala town, Nagerjala bus stop is around 2.5 km and you can take an auto or rickshaw to get there. From Nagerjala, you will get buses from almost all the towns of Tripura.

The best part, however, is the train service in Tripura. As I have already mentioned, Udaipur has a railway station. Dharmanagar is the nearest railway station to Unakoti and you can reach Pilak and Mahamuni Pagoda by reaching Jolaibari or Sarboom by train. The local trains in Tripura are quite comfortable to travel and are yet to see the mad rush of train passengers.

Where to stay in Tripura?

All the major towns in Tripura have hotels and guest houses. Agartala has both luxury and budget hotels. Smaller towns like Dharmanagar, Kailasahar, Amarpur has hotels of budget category. You can get a single room or a dormitory bed at as low as Rs300 in Tripura.

If you are travelling with family, I would suggest you stay in the Tourism department lodges. All of them are in the best locations, though I cannot guarantee their prompt service there. The room in which we stayed at Gunabati Tourist Lodge in Udaipur was quite good and clean as well. But a water pipe in the bathroom was leaking and it was not repaired even after complaining. Well, we hardly stayed in the room for long, so it did not matter much to us.

What is the best time to visit Tripura?

Tripura has a tropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. The best time to visit Tripura is the winter between December to March. The weather remains cool in the morning to explore outdoors. For the rest of the year, the weather remains hot and humid. May to September is the monsoon season and Tripura remains prone to heavy rainfall.

We had visited in the month of October, just after the Durga Puja . There were pandals all around Tripura, just like the Durga Puja in Kolkata. While the days were quite sunny and warm, the weather remained clear without any rainfall. It was also not very hot either. We had arrived Tripura after Mizoram, where the temperature was colder and there was occasional rain as well. The weather in Tripura was completely opposite with sunny and clear skies. It was just perfect.

Q. Is it safe to travel to Tripura?

Yes, it is absolutely safe to travel to Tripura these days. Insurgencies, Naxalite movements are all things of the past. Just like the poachers who had converted into protectors in Bodoland , The insurgents of Tripura too have laid down their arms for a better life. Tripura is quite safe to travel now.

Q. How is the mobile and internet connectivity?

The major cities and towns have proper mobile and internet connectivity. Only when you go to the interiors, the internet connectivity gets poor. Both our Vodafone and Jio numbers worked fine in all the places we visited. Only at Dumboor Lake and Chabimura, we did not get internet connectivity.

Q. Is any permit required to visit Tripura?

Indians do not need any permit to visit Tripura. Foreigners too do not require any Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit Tripura.

Q. Are there ATMs in Tripura?

Yes, ATMs are available all through the state. We found enough ATMs at Agartala, Dharmanagar and Udaipur. Of course, if you are travelling to remote places, it is better to carry cash.

Q. How is the local transport in Tripura?

The local transport in Tripura is excellent among the northeast states. Roads are good, buses are in plenty. The best part is, there is a railway connection between Agartala to Udaipur and all the way to Sabroom. Bus tickets are also quite cheap. From Agartala to Udaipur, it takes about Rs50-60. So backpacking across Tripura will definitely be not hard on your pocket.

Q. How is the food? Is vegetarian food available?

We found the food to be quite delicious. Tripura has a huge Bengali population and so Bengali food is available in plenty. Pork is quite a favourite here along with fish and chicken. We ate a fish chutney in almost all the restaurants in Tripura. You will also find a lot of options for vegetarians as well. Cost of food is also quite reasonable.

Q. How is the weather condition in Tripura?

Tripura has a tropical climate with hot summers and warm winters. The best time to visit the state will be between October to March. But even in October, the weather was quite warm and we were sweating profusely while exploring Unakoti and Neermahal in the sun.

Q. What to carry?

Carry light clothes for exploring Tripura during the morning. Proper shoes are also a must as there will be a lot of walking around. Do not forget to carry sunscreen with you, as in most of the places you will be walking around in the sun. if you are visiting during winter, carry enough woollens.

Q. How many days required to visit Tripura?

That depends totally on you and what you want to do. You can take 4 days or 40 days. The number of days will depend on which places you want to visit. A typical Tripura itinerary will have 6D/5N.

We had a wonderful time in Tripura, more so because we had not anticipated the state to be so welcoming and beautiful. It just felt that we were in our home – not only because Tripura is a predominantly Bengali speaking state, but also it did not judge its travellers, just like the other northeastern states. Tripura gets a huge recommendation from us. So when are you visiting Tripura?

One of the seven sister states, Tripura provides picturesque views, thrilling adventures and serenity. Not just that, but the state has a strong history, too. Sharing a border with Bangladesh, it is home to over 15 tribes and ancient structures, both of which add to its culture and heritage.

How to reach Tripura

Agartala Airport, which receives flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Aizawl and Imphal, is located within the city. Be sure to book a window seat to catch a glimpse of the beautiful scenery on your way.

Agartala can be reached via state and private buses as well as cabs. The destination is located roughly 300 kilometres from Aizawl, 459 kilometres from Shillong and 558 kilometres from Guwahati. The road journey from each of these destinations takes one through lush forests, waterfalls, and hilly terrains.

Tripura is well-connected with the rest of the country via rail routes. Trains arriving at Agartala railway station come from cities such as Bengaluru, Silchar and Kolkata. They traverse through amazing topography before arriving in the city.

Gunavati Group of Temples

Located in Udaipur, a city in Tripura, Gunavati is a collection of three temples. Constructed in the 17th century, these temples have beautiful architectural interiors as well as intricate stone inscriptions, which are worth seeing.

How to reach: The temples are located about 53 kilometres from Agartala and can be reached via road.

Tripura Sundari Temple

The temple is among the tourist places to visit in Tripura because it is one of the 51 Sati Peeths in India. Believed to have been constructed around 500 years ago, Tripura Sundari is one of the oldest temples in India and brings in thousands of devotees yearly. Its structure, which looks like a modified Buddhist Stupa, adds a layer of intrigue to the temple’s architecture. This is not all — it is also called Kurma Pith (or Koorma Pith) since its premises resemble that of a Kurma (aka tortoise).

How to reach: The temple is located about 55 kilometres from Agartala. You can reach here via road through public or private transport.

Tripura is known to have moderate weather throughout the year. Summers are warm and humid, because of the proximity to the Bay of Bengal. Winters, on the other hand, are slightly cool.

Some of the most common ingredients in the local cuisine are rice, bamboo and Berma, which is a fermented fish. When it comes to beverages, what you should definitely sample (if you consume alcohol) is Chuak, which is a rice beer . Other dishes that you should eat are Mui Borok (made with Berma, onions, green chillies, potato and occasionally, bamboo shoots), Gudok (this consists of Berma, bamboo shoots, and fresh vegetables stewed together), Bhangui (made with rice, ghee, ginger, onions) and Muya Bai (pork meat, bamboo shoots, green papaya, jackfruit seeds and a whole lot of spices).

Tripura is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating states of India. Located in north-eastern India, it was called Kirata Desh or land of the Kirata in Mahabharata. The origin of the name Tripura is often linked with the Goddess Tripura Sundari, one of the state’s most esteemed deities. But, in all probability, the name ‘Tripura’ originates from ‘Tipra’, ‘Tippera’, and ‘Tuipura’, which denote the state’s indigenous population.

Like the other northeastern states of India, Tripura has a sizeable tribal population. There are 19 tribes residing here, thus making Tripura a culturally rich and diverse state. Tripura also boasts unique archaeological sites, such as Unakoti, Chabimura, and the Buddhist site of Pilak. In addition, the natural beauty of Tripura is exceptional, thanks to the Jampui Hills, Gomati River, and an array of pristine lakes.

We covered the entire Tripura (except Pilak) within 7 days. Here goes our 7-day itinerary for travelling to this gem of the north-east.

Day 1: Reaching Agartala and exploring the capital:

The flight from Kolkata takes less than an hour to reach Agartala, Tripura’s capital city. At first glance, Agartala resembled a nondescript town in north Bengal. With locals conversing mostly in Bengali and the shop hoardings’ being displayed in Bengali, it did not feel like we had just arrived in a completely new state.

We checked in at Hotel Tripura Sundari, which lies just beside the Agartala rail station. Since we had an early morning train to catch, we decided to stay near the rail station instead of the main city area. The hotel is a basic one, although the rooms are spacious, clean, and provided with all amenities. The price of double rooms is INR 1100, while single rooms are INR 800. You need to bargain a bit to get a lower price.

Afterwards, we swiftly showered, got dressed, grabbed a quick lunch at the nearby Sanskar Restaurant (the food is absolutely lip-smacking here), and set out to explore Agartala. For venturing within Agartala, e-rickshaws and autos are the best options. We hired an e-rickshaw for INR 500 for the entire day.

1. Ujjayanta Palace:

We first visited the splendid Ujjayanta Palace. The pristine Palace was built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya in 1901 and named by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Situated at the heart of Agartala, it was designed by Sir Alexander Martin in a Neo-classical style. The architectural style is influenced by Roman, Mughal, and British styles.

The Ujjayanta Palace used to be the residence of the royal family of Tripura. Covering an area of around 250 acres, the palace has a throne room, durbar hall, library, and other rooms. Later, after independence, the palace served as the State Legislative Assembly until 2011. At present, the Ujjayanta Palace has been converted into a vast museum, which showcases the history, geography, heritage, and culture of Tripura.

Things to remember while visiting Ujjayanta Palace:

• The palace remains open from 10-15 AM to 5-15 PM.
• It remains closed on Mondays and Govt. holidays.
• The entry fee for domestic tourists is INR 40 per person, INR 100 for Bangladeshi tourists, and INR 250 for foreign tourists.
• Entry is free for children below 10 years and school students on excursion trips with uniforms.
• Professional still camera charge is INR 600 per camera and INR 1500 for professional video cameras.
• Light and sound show is also held here daily. There are two shows – the first from 6-30 PM to 7 PM, and the second one from 7-30 PM to 8 PM. The entry fee for adults is INR 100 and for children below 10 years is INR 50.

Pro tip – Try visiting after 3 PM, as the palace looks spectacular under the afternoon sun.

2. Lakshmi Narayan Temple:

This beautiful temple was built by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya. Dedicated to Narayan and Lakshmi, it lies in the Ujjayanta Palace premises. Sadly, the temple was closed when we visited.

3. Durga Bari:

Located just beside the Ujjayanta Palace, the temple is consecrated to Goddess Durga. The Durga Puja is celebrated with huge fanfare here. Interestingly, the Goddess here has two hands instead of her usual ten hands.

4. Jagannath Bari:

This temple was built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya in the 19 th century. The temple is now managed by Sri Chaitanya Goudiya Math. Here, Lord Jagannatha is worshipped along with his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra. The entrance of the temple is modelled after the ‘Ratha’ or chariot of Jagannatha. The temple premise has beautiful idols of Sri Krishna, Sri Rama, Lakshmi – Narayan, Siva -Parvati, and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Later, we explored the roadside food joints near Ujjayanta Palace. Countless food stalls start operating here after 5 PM. You can find chats and panipuris, momo and soups, rolls and chowmein, chop and beguni, as well as Tripuri delicacies such as Tohan Mosdeng and Wahan Mosdeng. The place looks like a small fair during the evening.

Day 2: Exploring a temple, a zoo, and a border check post:

The second day being the Kali Puja and Diwali, we started by paying a visit to the revered Kasba Kali Temple. Situated just beside the international border of Bangladesh, this temple was built by Maharaja Dhana Manikya in the 15 th century. He also commissioned the digging of the picturesque Kamala Sagar just beside the temple premises.

Though the idol is worshipped as Kasbeshwari Kali, it actually depicts the ten-handed Durga slaying the buffalo demon, Mahisasura. Surprisingly, the base platform has an image of Siva.

The temple has a serene atmosphere, and the darshan and Puja offerings go here smoothly.

2. Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Zoological Park:

Afterwards, we went to the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Zoological Park. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Tripura. Covering an area of 19 km, it is famous for being the home of Clouded Leopard, Spectacled Monkey, and Hoolock Gibbon. It is also the habitat of over 150 varieties of migratory birds.

Things to remember while visiting the Sepahijala Sanctuary:

• The Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary remains open from 8 AM to 4 PM every day, except Friday.
• The entry fee for adults is INR 20 and for children below the age of 18 INR 10.
• Vehicles are allowed inside the sanctuary up to the gate of the Zoological Park. Entry fee for light vehicles is INR 50, auto INR 30, and bike/scooter INR 20.
• Still camera charge is INR 20, while the video camera is INR 2000.
• Tickets for entering the Zoological Park need to be purchased separately.
• Exploring the Zoological Park requires lots of walking. So, we advise wearing comfortable shoes and carrying drinking water and an umbrella.
• Toilet facilities are available at various points inside the Zoological Park.

3. Akhahura Integrated Check Post:

One of the top attractions of Tripura is the Akhahura Integrated Check Post. It was inaugurated back in 2013 and serves as the second-largest Indian trading centre with Bangladesh. Like the Wagah border in Amritsar, Akhahura also holds the ceremony of lowering the flags of the two countries by security personnel with a synchronised performance of the two sides.

It was really fascinating to watch the parades and lowering of the national flag by the security forces. Also, since it was Diwali, sweets and greetings were exchanged between the two countries. The visitors also participated in the Diwali celebrations along with the soldiers.

Things to remember while visiting the Akhahura Check Post:

• Visitors are allowed only on Saturdays and Sundays.
• The program starts at 5 PM.
• Reach the spot by 4 PM so that you can get a seat with an unobstructed view.
• You need to deposit your recognized identity cards before proceeding to the border. Also, you have to undergo body frisking as well for security reasons.

Day 3: Journey to Jampui Hills:

We started our third day by catching the early morning Jan Shatabdi Express for Dharmapur, which is the nearest rail station to Vanghmun in Jampui Hills. From Dharmanagar, we hired a cab for INR 2000 to reach Vanghmun. The road to Vanghmun is excellent, and it took us 2 hours to reach the popular hill station of Tripura.

We checked in at Eden Tourist Lodge of Tripura Tourism . This is the only reliable option for accommodation in Jampui. We had booked a big 3-bedroom room for INR 1900 per night. Food is available in the lodge and you have to book your meal beforehand. The quality of food is dismal here. Too bad, there is no other option of dining in the vicinity.

The Jampui Hills is a part of the Lushai Hills. Located in the North Tripura district, it comprises of 10 small villages of which Vanghmun is the headquarters. Known for its lush nature, orange orchards, and orchid bloom, Jampui Hills is a must-visit in Tripura. It is also renowned for amazing sunrise and sunset views.

Since the Eden Tourist Lodge has sunrise and sunset points inside the premises, we did not venture out. Both the sunrise and sunset were phenomenal.

Day 4: Ruins of Unakoti:

The next day, we left Vanghmun right after sunrise. Our destination was Unakoti , the enigmatic Saiva pilgrimage centre. Unakoti has been on our bucket list for a long time, and we finally managed to visit it. Previously, the road leading to Unakoti was nothing short of a nightmare. However, the scenario has drastically changed now, and the road has been repaired and widened.

In Bengali, ‘Unakoti’ literally translates to ‘one less than a crore’. In the local Kokborok language, it is called ‘Subrai Khung’. The myth of Unakoti centres around Siva and his infamous rage. According to the legend, it was the meeting place of the 99,99,999 Gods and Goddesses along with Siva. The entourage decided to take a rest and spent one night here.

In turn, Siva explicitly directed them to wake up before dawn to resume their journey. However, only Siva was awake before sunrise while the rest of the retinue slept. Enraged by this disregard, Siva unleashed his fury, cursed them all to stone, and went on his way to Kashi alone. Thus, Unakoti became the abode of one less than a crore divine figures.

Unakoti is characterized by both colossal bas reliefs as also loose sculptures of various sizes. The most notable ones are Gangadhara Siva, Unakotisvara Kal Bhairava, Durga, Ganga, Siva – Parvati as Kirata – Kirati, Ganesha, and so on.

Things to remember while visiting Unakoti:

• No tickets are required for Unakoti. You just have to enrol your name and a few details in a register at the gate.
• Try visiting before noon, as exploring the ruins becomes difficult under the harsh sun.
• Wear comfortable shoes, as visiting Unakoti involves climbing countless steep stairs.
• Apart from two shacks selling green coconuts, packaged mineral water, soft drinks, chips, cakes, and biscuits, you will find no restaurants here.
• A toilet facility, baby care room, and mobile phone charging points are available here.
• Unakoti itself does not have hotels. You need to stay either at Kailashahar or Dharmanagar. At Kailashahar, the only feasible option is Tripura Tourism’s Unakoti Tourist Lodge . By contrast, Dharmanagar offers more choices of accommodation, such as Lokenath Guest House, Hotel J C Plaza, Hotel Panchabati, and Hotel Unakoti.

After we completed exploring Unakoti, we returned to Dharmanagar and boarded the Agartala Express at 1 PM. We reached Agartala at 4 PM and spent our night there.

Day 5: Neer Mahal and the temples of Udaipur:

Our 5 th day in Tripura was a bright sunny morning, perfect for visiting the resplendent Neer Mahal . Neer Mahal is one of the two water palaces found in India, the other being the Jal Mahal of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Though Rajasthan’s water palace is one of the top attractions of India and thousands of visitors throng every day to catch a glimpse of the Jal Mahal, Tripura’s Neer Mahal is the larger of the two.

Neer Mahal translates to ‘water palace’. It was the brainchild of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma, one of the most famous kings of Tripura. The Maharaja used Neer Mahal as a summer residence and a pleasure palace. Built amid the Rudra Sagar Lake, it was named ‘Neer Mahal’ by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Things to remember while visiting Neer Mahal:

• Since the Neer Mahal is situated right in the middle of a lake, you need to take a boat ride to reach the palace.
• The ticket counter for boats opens at 9 AM and closes at 5 in the evening.
• The regular boat fare per head is INR 50. Around 20 people are taken on a motorized boat.
• You can book a country boat for a maximum of 7 persons at INR 350.
• You can also reserve a special boat at INR 2500.
• The boat will take you to the gate of Neer Mahal. You will get 40 minutes to explore the palace. On the boat’s signal, you need to return ASAP.
• You will need to pay a parking charge of INR 50 near the boating ticket counter in case you are visiting by car or bike. After reaching the palace by boat, you have to pay INR 80 per head as the entrance fee.
• There are two options for accommodation here. First, you can stay at Sagar Mahal Tourist Lodge of Tripura Tourism. Secondly, you can opt for Polo Lake Resort.

2. Temples of Udaipur:

Post lunch, we set out for the temples of Udaipur. First, we visited the Gunavati Group of Temples, located inside a dingy and busy lane of Udaipur. Three brick temples lie next to each other inside the premises. They were commissioned by Queen Gunavati, wife of Maharaja Govinda Manikya. The temples were built for the worship of Lord Vishnu. These temples somewhat resemble the ‘Chala’ type of temples found in West Bengal.

Next, we went to the Bhubaneshwari Temple, which has been immortalised by Rabindranath Tagore in his drama ‘Bisarjan’ and novel ‘Rajarshi’. Dedicated to Goddess Bhubaneshwari, it was built by Maharaja Govinda Manikya. It is constructed in the ‘Char Chala’ style of Bengal.

Lastly, we saw the Mahadev Temple or Mahadev Bari, which is revered as the home of Tripuresh Bhairava. This temple was commissioned by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya and built similarly to that of the Bhubaneshwari Temple.

For the night, we stayed at Tripura Tourism’s Gunavati Yatri Niwas , which is situated just a stone’s throw away from the Tripura Sundari Temple. We had booked two rooms, each at INR 1500 each. The rooms were okay-ish. The hotel has a restaurant; however, the food is best to be avoided.

Day 6: Dumboor Lake and Chabimura:

We started our 6 th day early as Dumboor Lake is quite far from Matabari. The lake is located 85 km from Matabari, and it takes around 3 hours to cover the distance. Also, the weather forecast was not favourable, and rain was on the cards. Hence, an early head-start to the day.

En route, we went to Tirthamukh, the awe-inspiring source of the Gomati River. Then, we hired a boat at INR 2000 to explore the Dumboor Lake and Visit the Narkel Kunja island. This huge lake has been created by the confluence of the Raima and Saima Rivers. It expands over a massive area of 41 sq. km. It resembles the shape of Siva’s Damru, and hence the name ‘Dumboor’ has been provided for this lake.

The boat ride to Narkel Kunja takes about 45 minutes. On this pleasant boat ride, we enjoyed the small villages lying on small islands and nature altogether.

The Narkel Kunja Island has been developed by Tripura Tourism. Cottages have been built along with a restaurant. As we explored the island on foot, we munched on fried freshly caught fish and shrimps as well as Hog Plum or ‘Aamra’.

As the weather was taking a worse turn, we skipped lunch and headed straight towards Chabimura . Chabimura is home to a series of extraordinary rock-cut carvings of Hindu divinities, engraved on the hills that line the banks of the Gomati River. The word ‘Chabimura’ literally translates to ‘hill of pictures’ (in local dialect, ‘Mura’ means hill). This place is also called Devatamura or ‘hill of gods’. Chabimura is replete with panels of rock-cut sculptures on the steep slopes of the hills. The most stunning carvings belong to Mahisasuramardini, known locally as Chakrak Ma.

Things to remember while visiting Chabimura:

• Motor boats are the only option for braving the Gomati River in Chabimura. Boat rides are available till 4 PM.
• The ride costs INR 150 per head. The boats don’t leave until all the seats are booked. Generally, 10-15 passengers are accommodated in one motor boat.
• You can also hire an entire boat for yourself. This will cost you INR 3000.
• There are no hotels for spending the night at Chabimura. You can book a stay at Sagarika Parjatan Niwas near the Fatik Sagar Lake in Amarpur.

Day 7: Darsan of Tripura Sundari:

Our last day at Tripura started with an incessant cyclonic rainfall. A gale accompanied the heavy rainfall, and it seemed impossible to go out. We had initially planned to visit the Tripura Sundari Temple at 5 AM. However, our plan got delayed owing to the non-stop rain. At around 7, the rain slowed down a bit. Armed with umbrellas, we braved the rain as well as the strong wind. The road leading to the temple was flooded, and there was hardly any soul out.

The temple, which usually bustles with throngs of pilgrims, was forlorn. We were the sole visitors. Consequently, we had an undeterred darshan of Goddess Tripura Sundari and offered Puja at ease. Pertinent to mention here that, Tripura Sundari Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and Sati’s right foot had fallen here. Hence, this temple is regarded as one of the holiest temples not only in Tripura but also in India.

Things to remember while visiting Tripura Sundari Temple:

• The temple opens at 4 AM and closes at 10 PM.
• The temple remains closed for an hour after the Goddess is served ‘Anna Bhoga’ at 1-30 PM.
• Try visiting as early as possible.
• Try avoiding a visit to the temple during the Kali Puja, as countless people visit Mata Bari during this festival.
• The ‘pera’ of Tripura Sundari Temple is delicious. There are numerous ‘pera’ shops lining the vicinity of the temple.

Unakoti is where India’s heritage stores its carvings and sculptures of gods and goddesses. It is the ‘Shaiba’ (Saivite) pilgrimage and dates back to the 7th – 9th centuries if not earlier.

The marvelous rock carvings, murals with their primitive beauty, waterfalls are not to be missed. Unakoti means one less than a crore and it is said that these many rock cut carvings are available here. Many of the rock carvings here depict the life of Lord Shiva as well as other instances from Hindu Mythology.

As per Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva was going to Kashi along with one crore gods and goddesses he made a night halt at this location. He asked all the gods and goddesses to wake up before sunrise and proceed for Kashi.

Sculptures of the Nandi Bull, Lord Ram, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Ganpati can also be seen here. For such a storehouse of religious and spiritual importance, it is only justified that the place also is the house to lush green flora and full of natural beauty.

Unakoti also makes a good place for hiking, trekking, and other activities given the terrain and the natural offerings of the area as a prime tourist spot in Tripura, Unakoti is an ancient pilgrimage centre, attracting tourists and devotees from far and wide which even you won’t like to miss it.

3. Dumboor Lake

Dumboor Lake is located in the Amarpur sub-division, about 120 km away from the capital city of Agartala. The look of the lake is like tabor shaped small drum, “Dumboor” of Lord Shiva from which the name “Dumboor” originates.

A massive and breathtaking water body of 41 sq. km. with an unending spell of luxuriant green vegetation all around stands majestic for her exceedingly charming beauty and 48 islands in the midst of the lake.

Winter attracts hundreds of migratory birds of wild variety attributing the lake the status of a healthy wetland habitat much to the delight of ornithologists and travelers.

Dumboor Lake is no less than a paradise for nature lovers as it is lined by beautiful hills and lush green landscape.

4. Chabimura

Chabimura is also known as Chakwrakma or Chakrakma is famous for its panels of rock carving on steep mountain wall on the bank of river Gomti that has huge carved images of Shiva, Vishnu, Kartika, Mahisasura Martini Durga, and other Gods and Goddesses.

The carving’s images date back to the 15-16th century. Birds chirping, the wind passes through the trees, the sound of water falling of natural fountains, the waves and sound of river water when boatman ply the boat, the drone of cricket, sometimes the sound of wild animals in forests far makes you feel like talking with nature from very near.

Chabimura shows the beauty of nature very closely. To see the actual beauty of Chabimura you have to take a boat & then feeling the breeze coming from Gomati you can see the beautiful rock carvings on Chabimura mountain walls and you can also see some beautiful small natural fountains & caves.

The biggest idol of ‘Maa Durga’ in rock carvings is about 20 feet high, you can touch & take her blessings. There are many small caves in the mountain you can see from the boat but if you want to experience those waterfalls & caves personally there is one place you can go & do your adventure & it’s really adventurous & beautiful.

If you have an adventurous mind it will surely call you to go there, climb the mountain, go to caves where you can see bats & snakes, locals say they don’t harm. There are many travel destinations in Tripura and among them, Chabimura is one of them which has a special natural fascination for the visitors.

5. Pilak Archaeological Sites

Pilak is an archaeological site in the Belonia sub-division of South Tripura. Many images and structures, belonging to Buddhist and Hindu sects, have been discovered here since 1927.

The site of a civilization that flourished during 8-12 centuries of the Christian era has been a cradle of a culture of heterodox creeds and sects representing both Hinduism i.e. Shiva, Surya, Baishnabi, and Buddhism i.e. Hinayana, Mahayana, Vajrayana which bear testimony to peaceful co-existence of the two cultures.

The important places are Shyam Sundar Tilla, Thakurani Tilla, Deb Bari, Balir Pathar, Sagar Deba, and Basudev Bari. The sculptures and art forms here have a remarkable similarity to that of the Palas and Guptas of Bengal, with influences of Myanmar and the local cultures.

6. Buddhist Stupa

Recently after the denudation of a natural forest area, ruins of a brick-built building emerged in the north-western part of Sonamura sub-division on the edge of the border with Bangladesh.

The discovery of a massive Buddhist stupa , chaityagriha, a monastery, and other associated burnt brick structures at Boxanagar has reflected the art and architecture & religious aspects of ancient Tripura hitherto unknown.

The local people initially attributed the remains to an ancient temple of Manasa the goddess of a snake. Attention was drawn to the Archaeological Survey of India and they took over the site.

There an idol of Lord Buddha was discovered and it was confirmed that it had been a Buddha temple. More excavation of the site will unearth the hidden story.

7. Gunabati Group of Temples

On the way from Mahadeb Bari to Badara Mokam, one would find three temples on the left side of the road. Commonly known as Gunabati Mandir Gucchha (Gunabati Group of Temples), Gunabati Group of Temples reveals that it was built in the name of Her Highness Maharani Gunabati (wife of Maharaja Govinda Manikya), in 1668 A.D. the two other temples also bear contemporary look but their actual history is still to be unveiled.

The architecture of these temples resembles other contemporary temples of Tripura except that the topmost parts are without stupa. Core – Chambers are marked by the presence of pitcher circular core chamber and its vestibule which was large with stupa like a crown is beautifully crafted like a lotus.

8. Tripura State Museum (Ujjayanta Palace)

The gleaming white Ujjayanta Palace located in the capital city of Agartala evokes the age of Tripura Maharajas. The name Ujjayanta Palace was given by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore which is a unique experience to witness living history and Royal splendor within the walls of Ujjayanta Palace.

This Palace was built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya in 1901A.D; this Indo-Saracenic building is set in large Mughal-style gardens on a lakefront. The palace has three domes each 86 feet high stunning tiles floor curved wooden ceiling and wonderfully crafted door decor.

There are many temples set around the Palace. Floodlight in the evening enhances the attraction of this edifice. It housed the State Legislative Assembly up to 2011. Today the Royal Palace houses the State Museum with an impressive collection of Royal and cultural artifacts.

9. Neermahal Water Palace

Neermahal literally means Water Palace. Neermahal is a former royal palace built by Maharaja of Tripura Kingdom Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma of the erstwhile Kingdom of Tripura, India in the middle of the lake Twijilikma in 1930 and was completed by 1938.

It is situated in Melaghar, 53 kilometers away from Agartala, the capital of Tripura. The palace is a picturesque fairytale royal mention located in the middle of the Rudrasagar Lake build by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya in 1930 A.D as his summer residence is inspired by the Mughal style of architecture.

Based on that every year in the month of August a big festival observed by the local body and Govt. Department which is called the “Neermahal Water Festival” . The festival observed for 3 days and many colorful cultural programs and event play in the evening.

A big attraction of the Neermahal water festival is the boat race in Rudrasagar Lake that you will not like to miss at all.

Ujjayanta Palace was built by King Radha Kishore Manikya and this was the royal palace of the ‘Kingdom Of Tripura’. It is also called ‘Nuyungma’ by the Tripuri people of Tripura. Ujjayanta Palace is situated at the heart of Agartala city and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state.

The palace is turned into a government museum, known as ‘Tripura State Museum’. Located in Agartala, the capital city of Tripura, the Ujjayanta Palace has been home to the state museum since 2013. This museum has a large collection of historical items and other rare and iconic things.  You are not allowed to capture any images inside the museum premises.

Neermahal, also known as Rudrasagar Lake is a historical palace constructed in 1930 by King Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. Neermahal is also called Twijilikma Nuyung. Neermahal is the largest ‘Water Palace’ in the country.

The architecture of the building, surrounded by the large water body and breathtaking views makes this place one of the best places to visit in Tripura. The palace has a total of 24 rooms divided into two parts. A water festival is organized every year in the month of August for 3 days along with cultural events. Boat racing and swimming competitions are among the main attractions of the water festival in Rudrasagar Lake.

Maharajas used to visit the palace by hand-powered boat from the Rajghat via the two stairways inside Neer-Mahal. The palace is home to one of the finest terrace gardens in India.

Tripura Sundari Temple, also known as Tripureshwari Matabari Temple is a famous religious location of the goddess Tripura Sundari. It is said to be among one of the most sacred places in India and the most visited temple in North East India after the Kamakhya Temple located in Assam.

There is a large water body on the eastern side of the Tripura Sundari Temple, named ‘Kalyan Sagar’. 06 Unakoti Rock Carvings- Kailashahar

Unakoti is known for its rock carvings carved on Raghunandan Hills. It is believed that before going to Kashi the lord Shiva spent a night in this place. There were 99, 99,9999 followers of him about to reach Kashi the next morning with the lord Shiva, but none of them awoke that morning, and hence lord Shiva left for Kashi alone and cursed them to turn into stones. This mythology explains how the Unakoti name appears in history.

One should not miss this place and definitely include it on the priority list of tourist places to visit in Tripura.

The name ‘Dumboor’ originated from the ‘Lord Shiva’, because of the shape of the Dumbook Lake like a small drum. The view of the lake along with the hill is really a mesmerizing thing to witness. 12 Chaturdasha Devata Mandir

Old Agartala’s Chaturdasha Devata Temple represents fourteen Gods and Goddesses, it was built by the Tripura King Krishna Manikya and is now a popular tourist spot in Tripura. Fourteen Gods and Goddesses are worshipped here by the Tripuri people. This temple is 22 km away from Maharaja Bir Bikram International Airport and 10 km away from Agartala Railway Station.

Thousands of people attend the Kharchi puja once a year in the Chaturdasha Devata Mandir. Near the temple, there is a pond, where bathing and other rituals can be performed. There is a tree named ‘Krishna Bat’ which has a mythological story of the tree.

The plant is called ‘Krishna’s Butter Cup’. It is said that once ‘Shri Krishna’ was about to be caught eating butter by Mother ‘Yashoda’, then he tried to hide the butter by rolling it in a leaf of the said tree and the tree leaves retain the shape till today.

Kasba Kali Bari Temple, also known as Kamalasagar Temple was built by King Dhanya Manikya during the 15th century. There is a lake named ‘Kamalasagar’ situated just in front of the temple. This place has religious importance for the Kali Mata Temple. The temple is almost 30 km away from the capital Agartala.

The name ‘Kamalasagar Lake’ was related to ‘Kamaladevi’, the wife of King Dhanya Manikya. India-Bangladesh border hut is also a major attraction in Kasba Kali Bari Temple.

16 Gedu Mia’s Mosque

Gedu Mia’s Mosque, located in the heart of Agartala, is one of the largest mosques in Tripura. The architecture of the building gives an old glimpse of implementation. This mosque has intense importance for its history and religious perspective for the Muslim community.

A young man named Gedu Mia had driven elephants, worked in a motor garage,  and  then became a driver, but his lucky day came in 1942 when the last ruler of Agartala, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, gave him a contract to build an airport in Agartala, and he completed the construction.

King gave him the profit and then he decided to construct a Mosque with the profit he earned. So, basically the name ‘Gedu Mia’s Mosque’ was taken after his name and this mosque has a large popularity among Muslim religious people Of Tripura. Gedu Mia’s Mashjid is also an architectural heritage tourist spot in Tripura.

17 Baramura Eco Park

Baramura Eco Park, also known as Hathai Kotor is situated in the Baramura Hill Range of Tripura and it is nearly 47 km away from Maharaja Bir Bikram International Airport. The whole eco-park is surrounded by a large forest area and this makes Baramura Eco Park the best place to visit in Tripura for environment lovers.

The National Army Troops organize a flag marching event every evening at the Agartala Integrated Check Post before 5 p.m. This is a quite popular tourist attraction in Tripura and spectators attend the flag ceremonies every evening to witness the flag ceremony. It’s a short drive away from Agartala City. In the evening, you can watch the event and meet people from India and Bangladesh.

The Akhaura Integrated Check Post will give a vibe like ‘Wagah Border’ after the completion of the proposed ‘Mini Stadium’ and other modifications of infrastructure. This may give this place a hike in the number of tourists in Tripura in the near future.

Visitors from other countries such as Sri Lanka, Japan, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, etc also come here to visit the temple.

20 Kalapania Nature Park- Sabroom

By Air:  Book your flight from your nearest airport to the Maharaja Bir Bikram International Airport(IXA). This is the only airport running in the Tripura state, near the capital Agartala.

By Train:  Agartala Railway Station is well connected with most of the other cities. ‘Humsafar Express’ can take you to Tripura from your state. Try checking railway tickets to reach Tripura by train.

By Road:  This is not a recommended route for reaching the state conveniently. Because there is no direct bus service available from Tripura to other states of India. However, you can reach Tripura by bus if you are from the North-East. It is well connected to Guwahati by bus from Tripura.

Pro Tips:  If you are coming from other cities then you should know that Tripura doesn’t have any Ola, Uber, or other known cab services to travel outstations from Agartala. So, it is advisable to get contacts and book affordable local cab drivers from Agartala who can take you to all the tourist places in Tripura. You can also travel by normal local vehicles, buses or train.

2. Amarpura – Ideal Picnic Spot

Amarpura is one of the best places to visit in Tripura and is considered as an ideal picnic spot. People often drive here over weekends to sit and pass their day on the banks of the Amar Sagar lake which is an artificial lake built in the 16th century. The city mostly stands on ancient ruins and also has a temple dedicated to Mangalchand (the eight-headed goddess). Also, if you go there during February, a fair is held to celebrate the month of flowers. There are two other lakes in this place – Dumboor Lake and Chobimura. Water Sports facility is also available in Amarpura. Other than this there are various other fairs and events held in this place to keep people visiting this place engaged all year round.

How to reach: Agartala Airport is the nearest airport from Amarpura (12 km away). The nearest railhead is also at Agartala. Various CNG based buses are available from nearby cities to come to Amarpura.

Melaghar is also a town located 50 km from Agartala. The place is famous for Neermahal which is situated in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake. The place has got very peaceful vibes. Dharamnagar is the second-largest city in Tripura next to Agartala and is located in the north part of Tripura. The place is known for naturally beautiful landscapes. There are several top-quality boarding schools located in this city. The temperature is always mild here, both in winters and summers. However, the place is adorned with very heavy rainfalls. The city is built over ancient ruins and is known for many famous historical monuments. Haflong is a famous tea garden which is known for its beauty and lies just a short distance from Dharamnagar. 6. Udaipur – AKA Rangamati

Udaipur was earlier known as Rangamati and is a town in Tripura and is famous for its Sundari Temple which is one of the religious places to visit in Tripura. The place is located on the bed of artificial lakes and is at around 55 km from Agartala. Some of the artificial lakes located in his town are – Dhani Sagar, Bijoy Sagar, Jagannath Dighi, Amar Sagar. The city is located on the banks of the Gomai River and has several temples. But the most popular is the Tripura Sundari Temple, which is also part of 51 Shakti Peethas. There is a big lake beside this temple which is called Kalyan Sagar. Another famous temple here is Bhubaneshwar Temple. Because so many lakes are located in his city, it is also called the city of lakes. Book lovers can find their mecca in Nazrul Granthagar library in Udaipur which was christened after Nazrul Islam.

How to reach: The nearest airport is Maharana Pratap Airport, which is located just 20 km away from the city and has many domestic flights scheduled from almost all major cities. Dumboor Lake

Jampui Hills

The name Ujjayanta Palace was given by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It is a unique experience to witness living history and Royal splendour within the walls of Ujjayanta Palace. This Palace was built by Maharaja Radha kishore Manikya in 1901A.D; this Indo-Saracenic building is set in large Mughal-style gardens on a lake front. The palace has three domes each 86 feet high stunning tiles floor curved wooden ceiling and wonderful crafted door decor. There are many temples set around the Palace. Floodlight in the evening enhances the attraction of this edifice. It housed the State Legislative Assembly up to 2011. Today the Royal Palace houses the State Museum with an impressive collection of Royal and cultural artefacts. Location: Agartala, West Tripura Distance: In the heart of the city

Arts & Crafts of Tripura

Handlooms and handicrafts of Tripura reflect the inborn art of workmanship, and uniqueness of the people. Tripura has a large population of tribals, thus has a tradition of different kinds of crafts. Handloom is the prime craft of Tripura. Intricately designed handlooms and silk, cane and bamboo works are the main form of art and craft industries. The obvious feature of Tripura handloom is vertical and horizontal stripes with distributed embroidery in multiple colours. Furniture, toys, objects of daily utility such as lamp shades, baskets, calendars, ivory work and Tripuran tribal jewellery, make shopping here a delightful experience. Cane & Bamboo Handicrafts Cane and Bamboo craft are the main crafts of Tripura. Ethnic groups in Tripura make wide variety of handicraft products using bamboo and cane. Some of the well known craft produce from the State include table mats, floor mats, room dividers, decorated wall panels, attractive furniture of cane and various gift items. The handloom industry is the oldest industry in the State and artisans produce cloths with the elegant designs, unique color combinations and lasting texture. Cane and Bamboo occupy a distinctive place in the life of Tripura. Wide variety of wonderful objects is made out of the Cane and Bamboo. Variety of items are produced, including Furniture, and Table Mats & other Mat products, Lamp Shades etc. These products are also exported to various countries as they are in great demand. Interior decoration products made out of Cane and Bamboo include ceilings, paneling, plaques, Pot containers (Planters) etc. made of Gossamer thin bamboo mattress. Lamp Shades made out of fine strips of cane and bamboo, Furniture made of cane, Baskets knitted out of cane and bamboo strips are some of the well-known craft produce from the Tripura, which are always on demand. Handlooms Handloom is the oldest industry in the State and the tribal people produce their own clothes with elegant designs, unique color combinations and lasting texture. The traditional items produced include Risa and Riha. People in this region look to weaving inseparable part of life. The industry has passed on from generation to generation. The tribal women of Tripura religiously devoted to weaving . The beginning of ritual has always been with the offering of flowers and beautiful piece of Riha and Risa given by the great grand mother and followed by each and every tribal family as their tradition. In fact it was a pre-requisite for every tribal girl to know weaving. Otherwise she should not be considered as a bride. Both Commercial looms and Non-commercial looms operate in the State. Non-commercial looms are operated by the tribal inhabitants of the state. They weave fabrics for their own consumption whereas the commercial looms are controlled by the Bengalis as well as Manipuri weavers. So the Handloom Industry of Tripura is the reflection of Tribals, Manipuri and Bengalies.
