Birmingham Brewery Tour

Private tour only | price - $75-100 |  length 2.5-4 hours.

Sample a beer, or two, or ten on our Bham Brewery Tour.

We'll start on the far east side of Birmingham and work our way west as we try IPAs, porters, kolshes, sours, and anything else the brewmasters have created.

This tour is a great opportunity to get to know craft beer, especially, in Alabama. You'll get enough small tastes, we're sure you'll find something you won't mind having a pint of. And for the more initiated imbiber, after the flight, feel free to sample any beers you like. The more interesting, the better.

We'll also grab a bite to eat while at one of the breweries to ensure you're enjoying more than just beer in Birmingham.

More details below and a list of places we typically visit on this tour...

Ghost Train Brewing, Birmingham City Tours, Red Clay Tours, Craft Beer

Success! Message received.

The Fine Print

We will visit three breweries each tour. We do rotate beers and breweries, so we might not go to the same brewery or have the same beers two nights in a row. If you have a strong desire to visit one in particular, please let us know and we will attempt to work it out as best as possible. The breweries in Birmingham we have visited are: Avondale Brewing, Cahaba Brewing, District Brewing, Good People Brewing, Ghost Train Brewing, Red Hills Brewing, and Trimtab Brewing.

For those staying in Birmingham, we will pick you up from any downtown hotel location or a downtown Airbnb.  We strongly encourage all others to use local taxi services,   Uber , or the  max bus  when arriving/departing the brewery tasting tour.

We meet at Railroad Park in front of the large " Railroad Park " sign at the main pavilion, across from the 17th St. S. and 1st Ave, S intersection . If you have any questions about whether your place is in downtown, please contact us directly.

The tours begin promptly at 6:00. Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the start time to ensure we are able to begin on time. We leave Railroad Park at 6:10 and cannot accommodate arrivals past that point. Refunds or discounts will not be given to late arrivals.

Your ticket cost covers one flight (four 4 oz samples) at each brewery. Each brewery is different  and our time at each is different, which will determine how much we drink at each brewery.

The ticket cost also covers all transportation between breweries and a drop off back at Railroad park. We finish where we started.

Dinner is not covered in the ticket cost. There will be places to eat along the way if desired.  Water and snacks will be provided. We encourage you eat before the tour or during the tour.

City Brew Tours, the popular brand of guided craft brewery tours, has expanded its franchise to Birmingham.

The company , founded in Burlington, Vt. by Chad Brodsky, offers tours of craft breweries led by designated drivers. Brodsky launched City Brew Tours in 2008 and became “the first to establish a brewery tour company on the East Coast,” according to the company’s website. The tour offers guests the chance to visit a number of craft breweries in a city, learn about the history of the breweries, the brewing process, and sample a selection of beers at each location.

Since its launch, City Brew Tours has expanded to more than 14 cities, including Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, and Montreal.

Birmingham’s franchise of City Brew Tours opened to the public on Nov. 4. Led by Scottie and Dustin Hughes, the tours will include stops at Avondale Brewing Company, Cahaba Brewing Company, Ghost Train Brewing Company, Good People Brewing Company, Neighbors Brew & Pies, and TrimTab Brewing Company. The $99 “Original” brew tour features a sampling of 16 beers and a lunch and beer pairing. The slightly smaller $75 “sip” tour will include 12 samples and a pretzel snack. Tickets are available at citybrewtours.com/birmingham. City Brews Tours Birmingham is offering a 20 % promotional discount on tours until November 15. Patrons who wish to receive the discount can book their tours using the code “LAUNCH20.”

“We have partnered with some of the best breweries in Birmingham to give an experience unmatched in the area,” Scottie Hughes, co-leader behind City Brew Tours Birmingham, said in a press release. “We will be going through the history and brewing process of craft beer while tasting a variety at each stop. Birmingham has such great quality craft beer that we cannot wait to show off to our guests.”

Our guide Mike grew up in the area and has also done a lot of research on the civil rights movement. He knows descendants of some of the leaders and is extremely knowledgeable on the topic. • Crystal343 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles this is an absolute must do in Birmingham. Stop scrolling. I promise you will not regret this! We have been on a Deep South crawl through several states. Affectionately calling it our Slavery, Civil War, Civil Rights tour. Trying to better educate ourselves on those issues. Mike did an extraordinary job, covering many of the bits of history that we are reluctant to talk about. He did it with grace, dignity and incredible compassion. I would hazard to guess how many times he has given the tour, but was still deeply touched at some of the most tragic events. Evidencing he truly cares about telling truth. At first it seemed a bit pricey for the tour, but I promise you will not get this kind of info on your own. And you certainly won’t be going to all the places we went. Cannot recommend these guys highly enough!!! Mike, your humanity, your hope, your knowledge moved us further along in our journey. They can’t kill hope! Read more Written February 14, 2024

Mike contacted us the night before via text to be sure we knew where to meet him and gave us a tip on where to park for free. In the morning he was waiting for us on time as promised. Even though we were the only two on the tour that day, Mike had the same energy and enthusiasm as he would have had for a group of 50! He was VERY knowledgeable about all the sites we visited and was able to give us a comprehensive picture of the civil rights struggles in Birmingham. He was very thoughtful about the events and often asked us questions about we thought and felt as we heard the stories and saw the sights. We came away with so much more knowledge and understanding of the history of Birmingham, the key players, and the importance of this city in the overall struggle for civil rights. We would HIGHLY recommend you take this tour if you visit Birmingham. Read more Written February 6, 2024

  • Drowlette 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful, eye-opening, tour about Birmingham's role in the Civil Rights movement The "Birmingham Civil Rights Tour- Riding & Walking" was an incredible way to spend a morning in Birmingham. Our small group was treated to Mike's incredible depth of knowledge on the topic, enthusiasm for his hometown, warmth, and a comfortable mix of walking and riding in a clean tour van across many sites in the city. The city's role in the civil rights movement was extensive, and Mike did not shy away from sharing the often shameful facts, so be prepared to learn a ton, and come away with a renewed commitment to not let history repeat itself. This company is a small family business and part of your ticket purchase goes to support a local soup kitchen, so I can't recommend it highly enough for those who want to really understand and appreciate this important part of American history. • A well known outlet for real ale, established over 30 years ago, they stock over 250 ales! Dave, the manager at Bernies (naturally), once said: “You know what? I am going to serve ale into vessels that people can take away in appropriate containers!” And that is what happens....

Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Lauren Bedford

  • LAST UPDATED 12/13/20

IMG 7924 2 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

In the past few years, the brewery scene in Birmingham has really skyrocketed. Craft beer is no longer a second option, it’s not seen as “fussy” or “fancy.” Local breweries have become places to relax and grab a beer with a friend, or a spot to settle in with your pup and groove to some low-key live music.

Expand your palette with IPAs, kettle sours, brown ales and more. Testing the water (err… the hop-infused water) at local breweries is a great way to learn about what kind of flavors you prefer and the styles of beer you really enjoy. Birmingham breweries are exceeding expectations with their increasingly speedy output of new beer styles and flavors, sometimes weekly.

Taste for Yourself

Interested in taking a spin around the Magic City and seeing the city the brewery way? Lucky for you, I did some very sophisticated and high-level brewery research to help you out. I’ve mapped out a pretty well-structured order in which to visit the breweries, with a quick jaunt out to Trussville for the newcomer on the scene, Slagheap Brewing.

Safety First

As always, please make sure you have a designated driver if you plan to consume alcohol — especially if you plan to be hopping around town drinking beers.

The Great Birmingham Brewery Tour

Stop #1: cahaba brewing.

IMG 7875 25 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

  • Seasonal Beer: Cahaba currently has a few special beers on tap. The Oktoberfest beer is a fall seasonal, but they also have a beer called DD’s Cherry Hibiscus Sour, which benefits the Breast Cancer Research Center of AL, and one called Sweet Lady IPA $1 of which goes to Ales for ALS.
  • Atmosphere: Relaxed, open, laid back. They have TVs for sports as well as skee ball and arcade games.
  • Upcoming Events: Bham Now’s BOLD Speaker Series: Sarah Parcak. RSVP here. (There will be beer and free tacos… how can you say no?)
  • Fun Fact: The brewery is housed in an old depot building.

IMG 7881 23 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Stop #2: Avondale Brewery

  • Seasonal Beer: Avondale currently has a Märzen Oktoberfest beer on tap, but their sours are what they are brewing and selling right now.
  • Atmosphere: Relaxed, fun, dogs everywhere. Because Avondale has a large patch of grass in their patio (which feels more like a friend’s backyard), this is an extra dog-friendly place to be.
  • Events: Magic City AIDS Walk on October 14.
  • Fun Fact: Avondale Brewery also has a separate Sour Room for their sour beers. It is located in the parking lot adjacent to the brewery, next to Wasabi Juan’s.

IMG 7911 19 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Stop #3: Back Forty Beer Company

  • Seasonal Beer: High Hazard Tropical DIPA, a summery double IPA with coconut and pineapple. Great for the hot beginning days of Fall!
  • Atmosphere: Back Forty boasts a full restaurant as well as an on-site brewery. Get the fries. Thank me later.
  • Upcoming Events: Boos and Brews benefitting Mitchell’s Place on October 23.
  • Fun Fact: This brewery has 2 locations. The original location is in Gadsden, and the Sloss Docks location is their second.

IMG 7934 16 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Stop #4: Slagheap Brewery

  • Seasonal Beer: Nothing on tap yet, but we’ve been told that they are working on a brew made with locally-grown Golden Kiwis!
  • Atmosphere: While Slagheap is the smallest brewery, the vibe was very cool. Joe Meadows, the owner, was front and center engaging with customers in the stylish subway-tiled taproom.
  • Upcoming Events: The brewery often hosts food trucks, like the new hand-pies truck, The Anatomy of Pi .
  • Fun Fact: Meadows supplies beer to the bakery across the street, Great Harvest Bread Company, where the baker makes bacon-cheddar-beer bread. I’ve heard great things about this bread.

IMG 7947 12 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Stop #5: Ghost Train Brewing

  • Seasonal Beer: Ghost Train has been serving their cheesecake series for a little while, and their Peach Cobbler is another delicious play on a fruity, cinnamon-y dessert.
  • Atmosphere: Comfortable, with sofa-style seating outside and a stage inside for live music.
  • Upcoming Events: Redemptive Cycles’ Tall Bike Joust on October 13.
  • Fun Fact: Ghost Train now distills their own gin and vodka – you can order a spirit next time you stop in!

IMG 7938 14 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Stop #6: Trimtab Brewing

  • Seasonal Beer: The Holiday Now Cranberry Spice beer is a seasonal play on their fan-favorite beer, the Raspberry Berline Weisse Paradise Now.
  • Atmosphere: The brewery showcases and sells art from local artists and plays old-school movies on the projector screen. They host DJs regularly and have a selection of board games for guests.
  • Upcoming Events: Tour de Brewers XIII – Oktoberfest Edition on October 20.
  • Fun Fact: The 205 Pale Ale was just named the best beer in Alabama!

IMG 7975 1 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Stop #7: Good People Brewing Company

  • Seasonal Beer: Mumbai Rye IPA, a classic Fall IPA from Good People that was just released this season.
  • Atmosphere: Picnic tables outside encourage outdoor relaxing. They also have giant Jenga games for guests to play. The location is right across the street from the Baron’s stadium, which brings a fun atmosphere to the area.
  • Upcoming Events: Paints and Pints on November 7.
  • Fun Fact: Good People is the oldest brewery in the state of Alabama.

Red Hills 1 Your ultimate guide to the Birmingham brewery scene, including seasonal brews and upcoming events

Stop #8: Red Hills Brewing

  • *Note: Red Hills is currently closed for renovations.*
  • Seasonal Beer: Caught in the Rye IPA, a refreshing and light IPA perfect for Fall!
  • Atmosphere: Laid back and family friendly. Play darts or drink your beer in a one of a kind wooden booth.
  • Upcoming Events: No events on the schedule, but Red Hills is always open to scheduling you and your friends or co-workers for your next big gathering.
  • Fun Fact: “Sal” the Salamander is the brewery mascot.

Avondale Brewing connects us with history by operating out of a former saloon, drugstore, and brothel. The Brewery has a laid-back atmosphere and a beautiful view of the stage where musicians perform. They serve great beer, wine, and cider. Although they don’t serve food, tourists may purchase food from outside food trucks. The Brewery is locally owned and runs to restore the community and the history of Avondale, Alabama.

We suggest tasting the Battlefield, which is named after a Civil War fight, one of the numerous beers they sell with engaging historical titles.

The Good People Brewing Company offers a delicious selection of beers, making everything all good. Visitors may also take brewery tours and shop for man-cave decorations such as hats and shirts. The Brewery’s tap room offers an exciting glimpse at the brewing process. The Brewery is scattered with games visitors can play with friends and family.

Although there isn’t any food provided, you can bring your snacks or purchase anything from the food truck outside. The samplers they offer are a terrific way to find out what you enjoy, and while you’re there, try the Pale Ale and Bearded Lady as well.

The Trim Tab Brewery has been converted from a warehouse into an eclectic brewery and is situated on the outskirts of downtown Birmingham. It is a fantastic spot to get up with friends or hang out after a hectic day. The Brewery offers a spacious interior dining area, a patio in the back, and a hippie dorm room ambiance. Outside, they often have some decent food trucks where patrons may purchase snacks or meals to go with their beverages.

They are the only Brewery in the area to provide a gluten-free beverage, and another bonus is that the establishment is dog friendly. Stick to their fruity beers if you want to avoid disappointments, and while you’re at it, try the crowd favorites as well: Raspberry Berliner Weisse and Paradise Now.

Ghost Train Brewing is a one-of-a-kind brewery located along 3rd Avenue South. This well-known Brewery has updated its outside seating area, which now features open shipping containers and a stage for live music, which visitors can enjoy while sipping their unique beer. There isn’t much food, but their beers are excellent. They do take it into account and let you order in.

Although the interior is wide and spacious, the lighting creates a warm ambiance. In addition to an ample supply of decent beer on tap, they occasionally offer some free stickers. Check out this establishment if you’re in the neighborhood and want a good time with friends and family. They also have Ping pong, foosball, free little snacks, and much more, which can help you spend quality time with your loved ones. If you are an IPA fan, we recommend trying the IPL and Indian Pale Lager.

Oversoul Brewing offers visitors a view of Buck Creek and Helena Park, which adds to the experience for visitors by offering calming and scenic views. Making the freshest beers is the primary goal of this locally-owned, small-batch Brewery. They hold concerts in the yard, which is a terrific idea, and they have a lovely outside seating space where visitors can enjoy their time while listening to good music.

The Brewery also includes an upper deck with a giant Jenga and a game of hook and ring that many children enjoy. This dog-friendly Brewery is the place to be if you enjoy traveling with your dog. We recommend trying several beers as each one will have a unique taste. Also, try the Oversoul House IPA while you’re there; it’s popular with consumers.

The Brewery, housed in the Old Alabaster Post Office on First Avenue West, aspires to capture the allure and distinctiveness of its situated community. The Brewery has gone a long way from its beginnings as a home-brewing business and now operates its location intending to give Alabaster access to its craft beer. Locals who are as devoted to craft beer adore them.

The modest music establishment, which features local performers and has a beer garden, is popular with the patrons. If you enjoy eating, you may try the food trucks and purchase delectable nibbles to go with your beverages.

Those who don’t drink also provide root beer and sodas. But, if you are a beer fan, we recommend Trying out the Esperanza Mexican Style lager and blood orange wheat.

Back Forty Birmingham is a well-liked brewpub that is a relatively recent addition to Birmingham’s brewing industry and is renowned for its delectable menu and refreshing brews. You’ll discover fun outdoor activities and games such as corn hole, a large outside sitting area with a glimpse of the Sloss Furnaces, and every local beer you could want at this award-winning microbrewery. The Brewery also has a wall of photos honoring all the dogs that have stopped, which is a sweet touch.

While you’re there, we suggest pairing a traditional burger or a sandwich with the customer forte Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale. There you have it, the best breweries in Birmingham! Where would you like to visit first?

Fantastic way to explore your city and spend an afternoon/evening

"I would highly recommend this to anyone. Barry and Eric were excellent tour guides and did a great job of not only teaching us about the history of beer, but also made a point to learn about each person's favorite type of beer so it was including in the samplings. All the places we visited were great. I definitely plan on doing this again."
