Golden is one of the best hiking destinations in the Front Range , and with its proximity to Denver, it’s an easy way to get out of the city and into the mountain air! Most of the hiking trails are also mountain bike and pet friendly. There are plenty of easy trails, most of which are at lower levels of elevation (for Colorado anyway!), so hiking is a great thing to do in Golden before you hiking at higher altitudes to help you get acclimated!

Our favorite place to hike in Golden is Golden Gate Canyon State Park . This park has several hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty, from super chill hikes suitable for young children, as well as more moderate-to-difficult options. We particularly like the Raccoon Trail and the Blue Grouse Trail to John Frazer Cabin .

Pro Tip: Visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park in the fall to see the aspens turn their magical yellow hue!

Lookout Mountain Park and North Table Mountain Park are also great places to hike in Golden and are close to downtown. If you’re looking for more alpine and snow-capped mountain views, you should go to Lookout Mountain . If you’re short on time, head to North Table Mountain for views of the surrounding foothills, and, on a clear day, the Denver skyline.

Always make sure you check water conditions before embarking on your tubing adventure, as high water levels can make tubing dangerous . Sadly, there have been deaths in the past. Lastly, we recommend watershoes (we like Chacos ), sunscreen , and plenty of water to stay hydrated.

This was one of the first activities Tim and I did in Golden. We had a great guide who was enthuasiastic and told us all about the history of the Coors family and the evolution of their beers. A highlight of the tour for us was visiting the brewhouse with its massive vats and machinery . The tour also includes plenty of samples , and we even got to keep the souvenir aluminum cups they served us with!

9. Visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is one of the best things to do in Golden, Colorado to learn about the life of one of America’s most famous cowboys. The museum features exhibits about Buffalo Bill’s life and legacy, as well as a beautiful view of the mountains.

Located on Lookout Moutain , the Buffal Bill Museum features a variety of exhibits and displays that showcase Buffalo Bill’s life and achievements, as well as the history of the American West. Visitors can explore artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia from Buffalo Bill’s life, including his Wild West Show , which traveled across the United States and Europe, entertaining millions of people and shaping the world’s perception of the American West.

We also really enjoyed the short film that summarizes Buffalo Bill’s life and impact. It helped put the artifacts into context!

Tip: While on Lookout Mountain, don’t miss the Boettcher Mansion . This historic mansion was built in 1917 and features beautiful architecture amidst mountain views.

During the festival weekend, local businesses offer special pet-friendly packages, so if you travel with your pup and plan to visit Golden in February, be sure to check it out!

14. Dine in a Yurt at Sherpa House

The Sherpa House Restaurant is a unique and authentic Nepalese and Tibetan restaurant owned and operated by a Nepalese family who bring their cultural heritage and culinary expertise to the menu.

The atmosphere at Sherpa House is warm and inviting, with traditional Nepalese decor and cozy seating. The menu features a variety of dishes that are inspired by the Himalayan region, including popular Nepalese and Tibetan dishes such as momos, curries, thukpa, and tandoori . There aren’t many options for South Asian cuisine in Golden, but thankfully Sherpa House overdelivers with a unique and authentic atmosphere and delicious food!

Tip: Ask if there is any available seating in the yurt for a unique dining experience at the Sherpa House!

15. Grab a slice at Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza is a popular wood-fired pizzeria located in downtown Golden, Colorado. This locally owned and operated restaurant is known for its delicious, authentic Neapolitan-style pizza and its warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s a local favorite , so get here early on weekends if you want to dine in! Otherwise, we recommend picking up a pizza to go and enjoying a picnic in one of Golden’s parks or along the Clear Creek.

16. Enjoy a fancy coffee at Windy Saddle Cafe

The Windy Saddle Cafe is a cozy and welcoming cafe downtown that offers a range of delicious breakfast and lunch options. What won me over, however, were the fun and unique coffee and espresso drinks they serve. My personal favorite is the Gold Digger , inspired by Golden’s mining history and made with espresso, caramel, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and milk. It’s dessert for breakfast with a dose of caffeine!

The food menu at Windy Saddle Cafe features a variety of breakfast burritos , breakfast sandwiches , and quiches . Additionally, there is a bakery case that offers a range of fresh-baked goods such as muffins , scones , and pastries .

17. Get a Flight or a Growler at Barrels and Bottles Brewery

Barrels and Bottles Brewery is a charming craft brewery that offers a rotating selection of craft beers, as well as a selection of wine, making it a great spot for beer enthusiasts and non-beer drinkers alike.

Visitors can enjoy their beer flights and pints while sitting at the bar, at a table, or on the outdoor patio.

One unique aspect of Barrels and Bottles Brewery is their “Bottle Shop,” which offers growlers of craft beers and bottles of wines for purchase to take home. This is a great way to try some of their delicious brews at home or to bring a gift for a beer-loving friend!

18. Eat and Drink at Golden Mill

One of our favorite food and drink experiences in Golden is the Golden Mill . This fun and innovative food hall doubles as a serve-yourself brewery . When you arrive to Golden Mill, you put your credit card on file and they issue you a card to swipe at the food stalls and drink taps inside. It’s the easiest and most fun way to enjoy a variety of beers and sample food from several vendors. If you want pizza AND barbecue, you can have it at Golden Mill.

Overall, it’s a fun, laid-back, and social place to hang out and enjoy a few drinks and some bites. We especially love it in summer when you can sit on the patio and enjoy the views of Table Mountain.

19. Go to a concert at Red Rocks – or even a hike

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, in Morrison, Colorado, just a short drive from Golden, is one of the most iconic music venues in the world, known for its stunning natural beauty and unparalleled acoustics. The amphitheatre is surrounded by stunning red rock formations that provide a breathtaking backdrop for concerts and events.

Red Rocks has been hosting concerts and events for over a century, and it has become an iconic destination for music lovers from around the world. Legendary musicians have performed at Red Rocks over the years, including The Beatles, U2, and The Grateful Dead.

20. Brunch at Cafe 13

Cafe 13 is my favorite brunch spot in Golden . It’s also my favorite coffee shop to work from when I feel like a change of scenery from my home office! The cafe specializes in serving up delicious breakfast and lunch dishes, along with freshly brewed coffee and tea. I usually order their loaded avocado toast with a cappucino .

In the summer, a coveted spot on the outdoor patio at Cafe 13 is the perfect way to start the day. But, if you can’t linger, you can grab and go as well!

Tip: Colorado is famous for its green chilli , and Cafe 13 makes their own in-house. Enjoy!

21. Golden History Museum and Park

If you’re a history buff , you won’t want to miss the free Golden History Museum , located in downtown Golden. The museum features dynamic displays that showcase the city’s collection of 15,000 historic objects, as well as versatile programming spaces and a hands-on gallery for families with young children. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m .

Near the museum and affiliated with it, you can step back in time and experience life as a homesteader at Golden History Park , formerly known as Clear Creek History Park . This historic site features original buildings from the Pearce Ranch , one of the largest ranches in the area in 1912. Stroll through the park and peek into real 1800s cabins, as well as other buildings from the ranch, including a barn, chicken coop, and two-seat outhouse. You can also visit the 1876 Guy Hill schoolhouse, which was moved to Golden in 1976. Admission is free, and the grounds are open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m . Check out the events schedule to see when the buildings are open for visitors, and be sure to chat with the friendly volunteers who serve as interpreters within the historic structures. The park is located at 11th & Arapahoe.

23. See a Moon Rock at the Free Mines Museum

The Mines Museum , also known as the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum , is a fascinating destination for anyone interested in geology, mining, and mineralogy.

The museum features a wide range of exhibits that showcase the history of mining and geolog y in Colorado and beyond. Visitors can explore interactive displays that demonstrate the process of mining and mineral extraction, as well as learn about the different types of minerals found in the region.

In 1974, Nixon gifted each state and 160 countries with two “Goodwill” moon rocks from the Apollo 17 mission. One of Colorado’s moon rocks has been on display at the State Capitol, and the other was thought to be lost until 2010. Now it’s one of the most interesting pieces on display at the Mines Museum.

This is a particularly great activity to combine with Dinosaur Ridge , since the two attractions are nearby to one another and align with a similar interest in paleontology and geology!

The Foothills Art Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating the arts. 26. Drive the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway

The Lariat Loop is a 40-mile Colorado Scenic & Historic Byway that combines several smaller roads, including Denver’s Mountain Park system, to offer breathtaking views of the Front Range. The Loop starts in downtown Golden, where you can grab a coffee or picnic to go and begin your drive up Lookout Mountain, a 4.3-mile road that climbs 1,300 feet with drop-offs and viewpoints.

The road continues to the 7,379-foot summit of Lookout Mountain . The loop then heads to Genesee Mountain Park and the buffalo overlook, where you can see Denver’s herd of 40 buffalo and enjoy a snowcapped mountain panorama. 27. Bike the Clear Creek Trail

The Clear Creek Trail is one of the most beloved paved bike paths in the Denver metropolitan area and one of the best things to do in Golden! The trail spans 19 miles alongside the beautiful Clear Creek, starting in Clear Creek Canyon and ending at the South Platte River where it meets with another 40-mile paved bike trail. The route is shaded with trees for almost its entire length, offering a peaceful and scenic experience with the relaxing sound of rushing water.

As you ride along, you will be immersed in the history of the region, where the big gold strikes of Central City and Black Hawk were discovered in the mountains. The trail also passes by the Coors Brewery and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Are you unsure of the best time to visit Golden, Colorado? To be honest, Golden is an awesome destination year-round. And I’m not just saying that because we live there!

The spring months in Golden offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds, making it the perfect time to explore the great outdoors without the summer heat. You can go hiking, and biking, and enjoy several other outdoor activities. However, the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional snowstorms and rain, and some tourist attractions may not be open until late spring.

Summer in Golden brings warm weather, long days, and plenty of outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking. The town also hosts several outdoor concerts and festivals. However, it can get crowded, with long wait times and lines at popular attractions, and temperatures can become quite hot.

Fall is undoubtedly the best time to visit Golden. You can enjoy mild and comfortable weather and the stunning fall foliage for which Golden is famous.

The winter months offer beautiful snow-covered landscapes, skiing and snowboarding opportunities at nearby resorts, and fewer crowds. However, some attractions may have reduced hours or be closed altogether, and the weather can be cold and unpredictable. It’s important to be prepared for snow and ice on the roads, especially if you plan on driving in the mountains.

What to Pack for Golden, Colorado

Assuming you’ll be doing some outdoorsy activities like hiking on your visit to Golden, Colorado, here are some items we recommend packing.

• Day Pack:  It’s so helpful to have a good day pack to carry everything you need. I’ve had the  Osprey Skimmer 20 for Women  for years and it’s held up on every adventure! And here’s the  Osprey Talon 22 Pack for Men !
• Water Reservoir:  If your day pack doesn’t have a water reservoir in it already, you can buy one separately to slip into your bag. It’s absolutely NECESSARY that you bring water with you on every hike. Here are our favorite  2-liter reservoir  and  3-liter reservoir !
• Sun Protection:  This is so important year-round – even more so in winter when the snow can reflect the sun back up to your skin, multiplying your exposure!  Sun Bum  is our favorite  sunscreen  brand.
• Hiking Boots : I always hike in my  Columbia hiking boots . I literally have these in multiple colors because I love them so much! You can’t beat the price for the quality, too. Tim always hikes in his  Foxelli boots .
• Socks : I started wearing these double-layer  Wrightsock  brand socks when marathon training years ago and have never gotten a blister with them! In winter, I might mix it up with  merino wool socks , too.
• Sunglasses : I love these  wooden frame sunglasses , so they are my go-to.
• Hiking pants : These  hiking leggings  are my favorite in winter. In summer, I usually hike in  biker shorts  or leggings.
• Moisture-wicking layers : I wear this  pullover  all the time (it went around the world with us in 2014 and is still in great condition) and their  wool t-shirts  are great base layers. There are also  SmartWool t-shirts for men !
• Jacket : I always pack my  Columbia jacket  when hiking in the mountains.
• First Aid Kit : An  ultralight first aid kit  is a must-have for every hike. You never know what can happen, and you’ll be glad to have a  first aid kit  if you need one!
• Camera : I always hike with my  Sony a7iii . It’s a great full-frame camera for capturing all of our hiking memories!
• Snacks :  Clif Energy Bars  are our favorite hiking snack. It’s got the perfect mix of carbs, fats, and protein to power us through our hikes!
• Trekking poles : Many people like hiking with trekking poles to reduce the impact on the knees, especially going downhill. These  Black Diamond Trail Back hiking poles  are really popular!
• If you’re hiking Golden in winter, you’ll want to bring a pair of  microspikes  and/or  snowshoes  with you. These will slide over your boots and keep you from slipping on icy portions of the trail. Trust us, you’ll be able to enjoy your hike so much more if you aren’t worried about falling on the ice or snow!

The mesas of the South and North Table Mountains flank the town, which is filled with breweries, shops, and so many more things to do in Golden, CO.

I’ve lived in Colorado for nearly 15 years, and I’m in Golden multiple times a week. I know Golden inside and out, so if you’re looking to travel like a local, not a tourist, I’ve got the inside scoop of things to do in Golden, Colorado for you in this post.

The list of awesome things to do in Golden, CO is a long one and features something for everyone, from outdoor concerts to brewery tours to museums to hiking, biking, and climbing.

1. Hit the Trails

One of the absolute most popular things to do in Golden, CO is hiking on the many amazing trails around town.

Explore some nice easy hikes near Denver on the Peaks to Plains Trail along Clear Creek or up the mesas of North and South Table Mountains.

Lookout Mountain offers a variety of excellent hikes, including Chimney Gulch, and you can head to Golden Gate Canyon State Park for more of the best Golden hikes .

2. Tackle Epic Climbing Routes

Another one of the main outdoor Golden attractions is rock climbing. Clear Creek Canyon climbing is some of the best sport climbing in the area, while North Table offers a mix of sport and trad on basalt cliff bands.

3. Tour & Taste at the Coors Brewery

Beyond the mesas and foothills, the main landmark in Golden is the Coors Brewery.

You can visit the brewery and take a tour of the facility and get to sample some Coors beverages, or sign up for just a sampling in the lounge.

Reservations are required, and the tour is $20/person while the tasting is $10/person.

4. Have a Pint at a Local Brewery

Golden attractions include a bunch of breweries beyond Coors.

• New Terrain – At the base of North Table Mountain, this popular brewery is a great stop after hiking or biking up the mesa and often features live music on its outdoor stage.
• Mountain Toad – Just a block away from Clear Creek, Mountain Toad features interesting beers and a homey vibe.
• Golden City – It’s all about the patio seating at Golden City, which offers excellent sours along with other brews.
• Cannonball Creek – Located off of CO-93, Cannonball Creek is convenient for a pit stop after hiking Mt. Galbraith or the west side of North Table.
• Barrels & Bottles – This fun spot has several of their own beers on tap, along with wine and their signature wine slushie. The original location is in downtown Golden, and there is now a second location in the Denver West area.

5. Seek Out the Speakeasy

If you prefer cocktails to beers, head to the Golden Moon Speakeasy.

Hidden, but not too hard to find, next to the saloon in Miners Alley, Golden Moon makes outstanding artisanal cocktails that change with the seasons.

6. Get Your Caffeine Fix

When you’re in need of a pick me up, Golden’s got you covered with plenty of lovely coffee shops.

• Windy Saddle – A mainstay in downtown Golden, Windy Saddle is a community gathering place serving tasting breakfast, lunch, & coffee drinks.
• Cafe 13 – A modern cafe with delicious egg dishes, salads, and sandwiches, Cafe 13 also offers a variety of mimosas and breakfast cocktails.
• Launch Cafe – At the junction of I-70 & Colfax, this is the perfect place to grab coffee and breakfast to go before heading out to the mountains for the day, although the charming space is great for lingering, too.

7. Tube Down Clear Creek

One of the quintessential things to do in Golden, CO is tubing down Clear Creek on a sunny summer day.

Bring your own tube or inflatable or rent from Golden River Sports, then hike up the Peaks to Plains trail to the put in and enjoy the refreshing water on your ride back down the creek.

Clear Creek is also one of the most popular places for white water rafting in Colorado. So if you want to kick it up a notch, you can hire a guide to take you rafting through the rapids.

8. Find Fossils at Dinosaur Ridge

A National Natural Landmark, Dinosaur Ridge is the top dinosaur track site in the country. You can see more than 250 dinosaur tracks, along with many bones and fossils.

9. American Mountaineering Museum

One of the unique things to do in Golden, CO is wandering around the American Mountaineering Museum and take in the climbing history.

The museum features a variety of exhibits including historical climbing gear and incredible photos. Admission is $7/person.

10. Explore Red Rocks Amphitheater

Visiting Red Rocks amphitheater is one of the very top things to do near Golden. Located in Morrison, right next door to Golden, seeing a show at this iconic amphitheater is definitely a Colorado bucket list item.

You can also check out some cool hikes near Denver by hiking the trails around Red Rocks, including the short but super steep Mount Morrison.

11. Golden History Museum & Park

The Golden History Museum & Park offer a view into how the town was built and how it has evolved over the years.

Visiting the museum and walking through the outdoor park is one of the fun free things to do in Colorado .

12. Bike Through the Foothills

Golden is a very bike-friendly place with plenty of trails to ride.

The under-construction Peaks to Plains Trail is a paved path that runs along the creek, while North Table Mountain, Lookout Mountain, and White Ranch Park offer plenty of hilly trails.

Delve into the history of “Buffalo Bill” Cody at this museum of the wild west. The museum is located at the top of Lookout Mountain, and admission is $5/person.

14. Lariat Loop Scenic Drive

Lariat Loop is a wonderful scenic drive near Denver . Head from Golden to Morrison to Evergreen and back in a loop that encompasses some of the best Golden attractions.

From June to October, local vendors sell produce, baked goods, and hand-crafted goods at the Golden Farmers Market.

Bring your appetite and some reusable bags to the parking lot of the Golden Library on Saturdays to check it out.

Golden really is a foodie town, with local institutions and new food halls offering something for every palate.

• The Golden Mill – The happening spot in Golden these days, this food hall has an awesome two-story outdoor space and self-pour taps for drinks to go along with tasty meals from the food vendors.
• Sherpa House – A classic Golden restaurant featuring generous portions of extremely tasty Himalayan cuisine.
• Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza – You’ll almost always find a line out the door at this Golden institution with an all-you-can-eat pizza, soup, and salad bar. Don’t forget to put honey on your crust!
• Thai Gold – Get some delicious Thai food in a historic building in downtown Golden.
• Bob’s Atomic Burgers – This unpretentious burger joint is always full of locals and visitors building their own burger combos.
• Bonfire Burritos – You can’t beat Bonfire for an epic breakfast burrito to start your day or sate your hunger post-adventure. But order ahead online or be prepared for a wait – everyone knows that Bonfire is the place to be!

17. Stroll & Shop on Washington Ave

Washington Avenue is Golden’s main street and has plenty of shops to stop in, including Bentgate Mountaineering for your outdoor gear needs, Marrygrams for cute gifts and stationery, and both The Red Wagon and Blue Moose for local souvenirs.

18. Visit Lookout Mountain Nature Center & Preserve

Well-located near Denver, Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve makes for a fun family day trip from the Mile High City. The center features cool, interactive exhibits that appeal to kids as they learn through exploration.

Then, right next door to the nature canter is a family-friendly trail that offers excellent views of the surrounding area. Afterward, visit the historic Boettcher Mansion. It’s over one hundred years old and is well worth visiting during a tour. Just make sure it’s open since it’s regularly used for private events.

19. Explore Windy Saddle Park

Popular among hang gliders and paragliders, Windy Saddle Park gets its name from the strong wind that blows through the area from the Continental Divide.

However, if you’re not feeling quite that adventurous then you can always explore 3.5-miles of hiking and biking trails. After all, top hikes through the area include the Lookout Mountain Trail, the Beaver Brook Trail, and the Mount Zion Trail.

20. Visit the Colorado Railroad Museum

Easily one of the best things to do in Golden, CO, the Colorado Railroad Museum is located on 15 acres of land that features Clear Creek flowing between the North and South Table Mountains.

Now, you could easily spend the day here since there are tons of cool things to explore in addition to the upper and lower gallery of the Depot Museum. But, highlights include scenic train rides, exploring the outdoor rail yard with vintage trains, visiting the Outdoor Garden Railroad, and more.

Local Tip: During the holiday season (starting in October) you can hop aboard the Polar Express and go for a cool train ride at the museum. Just be sure to book well in advance since tickets are very popular.

21. Explore Golden Gate Canyon State Park

This epic Colorado state park near Golden is home to a wealth of tree-lined paths that are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

After all, this 12,119-acre natural oasis in the Front Range was initially founded in 1960 and features upwards of 42 miles of hiking paths, as well as 27 miles of biking/horseback riding trails.

However, some of my fave hiking trails through the area include the Raccoon Trail, the Mountain Lion Trail, and the Burro Trail Loop to Windy Peak.

So, grab those hiking boots and enjoy one of the best things to do in Golden, CO for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Local Tip: If you can try and visit during the fall since the Aspens turn a gorgeous yellow color.

Where to Stay in Golden

Golden is a great stop on a Colorado road trip itinerary and has a few excellent places to stay.

Get a room at The Eddy Hotel at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, The Golden Hotel right along the banks of Clear Creek, or the boutique Dove Inn downtown.

There is virtually no camping in the area, but the Clear Creek RV park is in a beautiful location along the creek and does offer a few tent sites in the summer.

A short 15-mile drive west of Denver, Golden feels like a world apart with wide open spaces and stunning landscapes of the Front Range and the Rockies.

Golden uniquely blends natural beauty, historical depth, and innovative spirit. Whether you’re drawn to the roar of Clear Creek, the towering presence of Lookout Mountain, or the quiet streets lined with historic buildings, Golden invites travelers to explore and discover everything it offers.

Downtown Golden

When I arrived in Golden, the vibrant ruby and golden leaves on the trees against the blue sky were a welcome sight—the unseasonably warm fall days made a perfect setting for Golden.

On my walking tour of Downtown Golden, I enjoyed the Old West ambiance with a small-town feel. The Welcome to Golden Arch makes a perfect selfie background.

Table Mountain Inn was the perfect home base for my visit. This historic hotel, located on the main street in downtown Golden, Washington Avenue, was steps away from fun things to do, boutiques, saloons, dining halls, outdoor activities, and more.

1. Golden Visitor Center

The Golden Welcome Center  is on the north side of Clear Creek Washington Avenue and has an abundance of brochures and information about the area available on outside racks. It also includes maps and guides about where to stay, dine, play, and shop in Golden. The Golden Visitor Center is close to the Golden History Museum and the Golden History Park.

2. Golden History Park

At Golden History Park , formerly Clear Creek History Park, you can tour the original buildings from the Pearce Ranch in Golden Gate Canyon, and get a taste of pioneer life.

The 1800s cabins are authentic, and you can peek through their windows. You can also spot other structures from the ranch, such as the barn, chicken coop, and two-seat outhouse.

The ranch belonged to Thomas and Henrietta Pearce, who raised eight children there. By 1912, it became one of the largest ranches in the area.

Admission is always free.

3. Golden History Museum

At the Golden History Museum , you’ll meet the legendary people who built Golden and learn about the local famous breweries. Exhibits include:

• Versatile program meeting rooms.
• A children’s hands-on gallery.
• A collection of 15,000 historic objects.

4. Foothills Art Center

Heading up the hill from downtown, the Foothills Art Center , founded in 1968, is housed in the former First Presbyterian Church. The Center offers a selection of exhibits, events, and programming for the community and artists. As of this writing, it is closed for construction.

5. Sherpa House Restaurant and Cultural Center

The Sherpa House Restaurant and Cultural Center  is worth seeing. You can meditate with a prayer wheel on the artistically landscaped grounds and enjoy an authentic Nepalese meal in the restaurant, which was doing brisk business the evening I was there.

6. Colorado School of Mines

The renowned Colorado School of Mines graduates students specializing in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The students, called Orediggers, are in high demand when they graduate because they earned a reputation as problem-solvers, leaders, and innovators. The graduates receive silver-plated metal diplomas engraved with the seals of the Colorado School of Mines and the State of Colorado.

7. Mines Museum of Earth Science

The Mines Museum of Earth Science  is the repository for the most extensive public collection of minerals from Colorado. Mines Museum is home to one of the Apollo 17 mission’s Goodwill moon rocks.

Visitors can explore an indoor cave showcasing glowing minerals, hike along the Bob Weimer trail, and stop by to see authentic triceratops trackways. The exhibits rotate regularly, so there is always something new to see.

8. American Mountaineering Museum

If you’re interested in mountaineering history, safety, and culture, take advantage of the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum . It’s the first and only museum in the nation dedicated to this subject.

Since its establishment in February 2008, the museum has been striving to interpret knowledge about mountains and educate people on mountaineering history, safety, and culture in a new and innovative way.

The museum is in the American Mountaineering Center. With 3,500 feet of space, it features exhibits on climate, science, cultures, and humanities related to mountains, guaranteeing a rich, exciting, and interactive visitor experience.

9. Clear Creek Whitewater Park

The Clear Creek Whitewater Park , established in 1998, is an exceptional recreational attraction in Golden. It offers a thrilling experience of recreational canoeing and kayaking, covering a quarter of a mile of exciting and splashing fun with an 800-foot course. The course is a challenging series of drops and pools, shallow surf waves, and extreme surf and wave drops. The U.S. Olympic Kayak Team practices at the course.

10. North Table Mountain

About 60 million years ago, North Table Mountain and its sister mesa, South Table Mountain, were formed by lava flow. Table Mountain Park offers over 15 hiking trails, making it an ideal destination for those with limited time and who want to go hiking near Denver. The best time to visit is in spring and early summer when the wildflowers are in full bloom, but the trails are open year-round.

11. Colorado Railroad Museum

The train horn blasting draws people from near and far to the Colorado Railroad Museum . Watching the behemoth steam engine provides entertainment for anyone. Even better, catch a ride on that very same steam engine, and you’ve got entertainment for the whole family.

With paid admission, you can tour cabooses in the rail yard and get a real sense of train travel in the Old West.

12. Coors Brewery Tour

Because Golden is the home of Coors Brewery, it is only fitting for you to schedule the Coors Brewery Tour into your itinerary. Coors Brewery is world-famous for being the largest single-site brewery.

The Coors Brewery Tour  showcases the history and passion for brewing. You get a 30-minute look at their malting, brewing, and packaging processes, along with viewing old photos, historical beer cans, bottles, neon signs, and other memorabilia from the Coors archives. Tours and brews sampling times vary, so check their website for details and schedule.

13. Golden City Brewery

Famous for being the second largest brewery in Golden, after Coors Brewery, Golden City Brewery  has been pioneering craft beer since 1993. It’s Golden’s original microbrewery.

Founded by two geologists, Charlie & Janine Sturdavant, the Golden City Brewery began operations in the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home. The brewery is still in the machine shop, with a second level added later. The carriage house is the tasting room, and the beer garden is in the backyard.

They are known for crafting exceptional Red and Pale Ales and various other beer styles.

14. Distilleries

If you are looking for something a little stronger than beer, you’ll find some distilleries in Golden offering specialty drinks and unique atmospheres. You can get hand-crafted cocktails at Golden Moon Distillery , State 38 Distilling , and Local Distilling.

Day Trips Outside Golden

15. golden gate canyon state park.

Golden Gate Canyon is about 20 minutes northwest of downtown Golden and less than 15 minutes past the Canyon. The Park is managed by Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

The Park is dog-friendly. You can rent a cabin or yurt, and it requires a Parks Pass.

16. Lariat Loop Scenic Byway

The Lariat Loop National Historic Byway  scenic drive will take about two to three hours, depending on how many stops you make.

From Golden, take Highway 6 to Lookout Mountain Road. Go up the mountain, then southwest down to I-70 at Genesee. Take Highway 74 through Evergreen to Morrison and complete the loop when you reach Highway 6 again.

When I was there, countless hang gliders were plying their skills in the sky around Lookout Mountain and Golden.

17. Morrison-Golden Fossil Areas National Natural Landmark

Incredible fossils and geology are at Triceratops Trail, Dinosaur Ridge , and other sites within the Morrison-Golden Fossil Areas National Natural Landmark.

Colorado’s Front Range includes the long hogback ridge between the Rocky Mountains foothills and the Great Plains grasslands. Originally named the Dakota Hogback, it became the Dinosaur Ridge because of all the fossils in this area.

Check in at the Gift Shop in the Main Visitor Center, where you can take a guided tour by bus, the most popular way to experience Dinosaur Ridge.

18. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater  offers many exciting live music performances and fitness programs like Yoga on the Rocks. Visitors can take self-guided tours beginning one hour before sunrise and continuing one hour after sunset. You can start by walking through the Visitor Center and exploring the interactive educational displays that highlight the geological and musical history of Red Rocks.

Many short self-guided hikes are available to experience the beautiful Red Rocks environment fully. Red Rocks Parks and Amphitheater is about 17 miles from Downtown Denver.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  It was late in the day when I was there. Traffic was building for the concert that evening, and access was restricted. You must plan your time carefully here. If you’re going to attend a show, ride-sharing options are a good choice.

19. Buffalo Bill Museum and Gravesite

William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, a frontiersman, scout, and host of a Wild West show, is buried at the top of Lookout Mountain. He asked to be buried on the mountain overlooking the Great Plains, where he spent much of his life. The Buffalo Bill grave is well marked.

Cody got the nickname “Buffalo Bill” because of his prolific slaughter of bison to feed the Kansas Pacific Railroad workers after the Civil War.

The Buffalo Bill Museum  opened in 1921 in partnership with the City and County of Denver by Buffalo Bill’s foster son, Johnny Baker. Johnny and his wife Olive, owners of the artifacts, managed the museum, café, and shop, which the Bakers named “Pahaska Tepee” after Cody’s hunting lodge outside Yellowstone Park.

20. Lookout Mountain Nature Center

The Lookout Mountain Preserve and Nature Center  is less than two miles from the Buffalo Bill Museum and Gravesite.

At the Nature Center, many nature enthusiasts volunteer to observe and document the natural surroundings. During my visit, I noticed several individuals sitting on benches, drawing, sketching, and taking notes while they observed the beautiful scenery.

The interactive exhibits fascinated me because I could get up close and look wildlife in the eye.

Families, solo travelers, and school groups can all have a great time at the Center. Kids will especially enjoy the hands-on playroom and observation room; everyone can participate in the naturalist-led programs. And for those who want to explore independently, a walk through the nature preserve is a great option.

21. Boettcher Mansion

In the Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve, the Boettcher Mansion  is a gem in a secluded setting. The Mansion was built as a lodge for hunting season and a summer home for Charles Boettcher, a hardware-selling magnate, and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it serves as a venue for social gatherings like weddings, receptions, commitments, and memorial ceremonies.

Places to Eat in Golden

With many great places to eat in Golden, it’s difficult to say which was my favorite. I ate at Table Mountain Grill & Cantina, Sherpa House Restaurant and Culture Center, Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza, Ali Baba Grill, and the Golden Mill Food Hall.

Golden is a western suburb of Denver that’s the seat of Jefferson County.

For beer drinkers all over the country, Golden has been immortalized as home to the Coors brewery, and the city has also played significant roles in the settling and gold rush eras.

Golden’s location at the foothills of the majestic Rockies makes it the perfect place for visitors to stay; it’s equidistant between the state’s most amazing natural attractions, and historical, artistic, and cultural ones in Denver as well.

Finding things to do won’t be a problem, regardless of the ages and interests of those you’re traveling with.

Below are 15 things to do in and around Golden, Colorado .

1. Colorado Railroad Museum

Over the years, railroads have played significant roles in the history and development of Colorado.

The Colorado Railroad Museum is located on West 44th Avenue in Golden and is hands-down a must-visit attraction for history buffs and railroad enthusiasts.

The museum’s collection includes a variety of exhibits containing equipment, memorabilia, photographs, and firsthand accounts – as well as a historic rail yard that’s spread over nearly 20 acres.

Locomotives and an array of unique rolling stock are often the stars of the show, but consider checking out the welcome video inside first before setting off on your self-guided tour.

2. Coors Brewery

These days, Colorado’s beer scene is most well-known for its small craft breweries that can often be found in even small rural towns.

For much of the state’s existence, however, Coors was King, and it’s still a much-loved brand that’s enjoyed all over the country.

The Coors brewery in Golden is the largest single-location brewery in the world. For lovers of beer who want to get a unique insight into how it’s made, a guided tour would be a great way to spend a few hours.

Tours include tastings for those of legal age, and there’s lots of interesting historical memorabilia along the way as well.

For more than two decades, Café 13 has been one of Golden’s hot spots for those in need of sustenance after a long day on their feet.

The restaurant is located on Arapahoe Street and offers breakfast and lunch, as well as an in-house bakery, coffee, and a full bar with lots of beer, wine, and craft cocktails.

For those who’ve already eaten who are just in need of a bit of adult refreshment, happy hour specials are offered daily from 3 to 6 PM.

Café 13 has recently undergone significant upgrades that have made it even more contemporary and welcoming.

4. Golden Moon Distillery

When it comes to intoxicating beverages, Colorado is definitely most well-known for its abundance of beers produced by micro and craft breweries, but local distilleries have been making big waves in recent years as well.

Golden Moon Distillery is located on Violet Street in Golden and was founded in 2008.

15 Fun Things To Do in Golden CO That Won’t Break the Bank

If you are planning a trip to Golden and don’t want to miss any of the must-sees but also don’t want to spend the earth, then keep reading to find out the best things to do in Golden CO – all of them free or inexpensive!

Golden is a sweet mountain town in Colorado that has lots of character, a fun gold rush history, and lots of natural beauty. It is nestled in a river valley at the base of the iconic Rocky Mountains and is surrounded by small mountains that are perfect for hiking . 

It is only a twenty-minute drive from Denver but it feels like you are a world away – so it’s no wonder that it is such a popular day trip destination. Golden is deserve dly popular and I always recommend people add Golden to their Denver Itinerary . – it is one of the best neighborhoods in the Denver area .

But there are so many things to do in Golden that you should stay longer if you can – you won’t regret it.

I put together a list of my favorite things to do in Golden CO that covers the best of what this beautiful town has to offer, from hikes and bike riding through to brewery hopping and delving into the town’s history.

I am a budget traveler so all of these experiences are free or inexpensive so you can stick to a lower budget while still having an awesome time in Golden.

I think there is something for everyone on this list, and I hope to inspire you to spend a couple of days or more in sweet Golden.

1. Hit the Hiking Trails

Hiking is my favorite thing to do in Golden and there are so many different hikes to choose from, starting with a flat and easy meander beside Clear Creek through to more difficult but rewarding hikes up some of the nearby mountains.

If you do one thing in Golden, make sure it is a hike, because this is the best way to experience the natural beauty of the area. Enjoy wildflowers everywhere in spring and early summer, and fall brings gorgeous golden trees.

2. Go Shopping

Golden may have a relatively small downtown core but there are a surprising number of great shops that you should definitely check out including gift shops, antiques, boutiques, consignment stores, outdoor gear, and more. 

My favorites are Rewind Consignments for gently used unique clothing, YoColorado for beautifully designed Colorado apparel and gear with a retro vibe, Marrygrams Cards and Gifts – I love their stickers, and Blue Moose Trading Company for fun Colorado souvenirs .

3. Do Some Brewery Hopping

Golden’s most famous brewery may be Coors but it is definitely not the only one, and it is definitely not the best. For a small place, Golden is home to a lot of breweries so if you love beer as I do, you definitely have to visit at least a couple of them.

As well as serving excellent quality beer, the other thing that is great about Golden’s breweries is that most of them are within walking distance of each other, so if you are staying in or near downtown Golden, you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving.

My absolute favorite is New Terrain Brewing Company , which is a little out of town but so, so worth it. I would recommend driving there first for one of their flights in their sunny beer garden and maybe lunch at one of the two rotating food trucks, then drive back to your accommodation downtown to walk to more. 

The best breweries in downtown Golden are Mountain Toad Brewing and Golden City Brewery , and I also like Barrels and Bottles Brewery and Cannonball Creek Brewing Company . The Eddy Taproom and Hotel is also a great spot with views over the town and a great beer and cocktail menu.

Hopping between these breweries on a sunny day with friends is one of the absolute best things to do in Golden CO!

4. Eat at the Best Golden Restaurants

Along with breweries, Golden is also home to some fantastic restaurants – this is even more true in the last few years with the opening of Tributary Food Hall and The Golden Mill – also a food hall with the best roof terrace in town, with river and mountain views. 

Other notable restaurants that you should try to eat at during your Golden trip are:

Sherpa House – A Tibetan restaurant and culture center that is super cozy inside and has a very affordable lunch buffet as well as an A La Carte menu with Nepalese, Tibetan, and Indian options.

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza – Another great affordable buffet option with agreeable pizza and amazing beer cheese soup. This is a popular spot with families.

Bob’s Atomic Burgers – Basic but very well-made burgers in retro digs right by town – I especially love their fried chicken burger.

Bonfire Burritos – Awesome burritos including a massive breakfast burrito with green chile – mmm.

Humble Cafe – New to Golden in 2023, Humble Cafe is a coffee house that also serves a range of breakfast sandwiches, liege waffles, sandwiches, and salads.

Atomic Cowboy – Another recent addition to the Golden dining scene, Atomic Cowboy is a food hall/restaurant that is home to small Colorado chains Denver Biscuit Company for incredible breakfasts and Fat Sully’s for NY-style pizza.

Blue Pan Pizza – Another local chain that recently opened on the outskirts of Golden, Blue Pan Pizza does excellent Detroit-style pizza.

5. Go Tubing in Clear Creek

One of the most adventurous things to do in Golden is to go tubing in Clear Creek. There are lots of rapids in the section that runs through town but none that are too scary – well, they are just the right amount of scary.

You can either take your own tube or rent or buy one in town. The best time to go tubing in Golden is in mid to late summer – spring and early summer see dangerously high water levels and the creek is usually closed to tubing during this time.

If tubing is a bit too crazy for you, maybe just swim in the river. There are numerous spots where you can get in for a swim without being caught up in the rapids.

Relax and dry off on the rocks or make a day of it with a picnic in Lions Park or Parfet Park by the river.

6. Feed Your Mind at a Local Museum

Golden is home to numerous museums and you should definitely visit at least one of them if you are interested in learning more about the history of the area. Here are the main museums in the area that you can visit:

Golden History Museum – This museum by the Visitor Center is free to enter and although small, it is worth visiting to find out more about the history of the town of Golden. 

Colorado Railroad Museum – I haven’t been to the Railroad Museum but it is on my list. There are over 100 engines, cabooses, and coaches in this 15-acre rail yard, and they even do train rides behind a vintage steam locomotive throughout the year.

American Mountaineering Museum – My favorite museum in Golden because I have a bit of an obsession with everything mountain climbing. The last time I went, there was a great movie playing with Tommy Caldwell (The Dawn Wall) and Alex Honnold (Free Solo) climbing Patagonia’s Fitz Traverse.

Buffalo Bill Museum – Even if you don’t have a great interest in Buffalo Bill Cody or know much about his life, I think this museum on top of Lookout Mountain is still so worth visiting. It chronicles Buffalo Bill’s life and his famous Wild West Show, with lots of information and artifacts on display as well as a film that plays on a loop.

7. Visit Buffalo Bill’s Grave and the Boettcher Mansion on Lookout Mountain

While you are visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum, don’t miss visiting Buffalo Bill’s gravesite and the Boettcher Mansion – also at the top of Lookout Mountain and linked by short hiking trails.

Buffalo Bill’s grave is pretty unassuming to look at, but there was a lot of fanfare and controversy when Buffalo Bill Cody was buried on top of Lookout Mountain in 1917.

The famous showman lived in Wyoming for a long time and the town of Cody, Wyoming was even named after him as he was one of the founders.

There was a lot of uproar from Cody about Buffalo Bill being buried in Colorado, and the grave ended up having to be encased in concrete to stop bodysnatchers from Wyoming from stealing it away.

The Boettcher Mansion is a gorgeous example of the Arts & Crafts style in 1917 and was the summer home and hunting lodge of Charles Boettcher, a Colorado businessman.

You can do a tour of the mansion or just enjoy the gorgeous mountain views from the grounds for free.

For a real adventure, hike up Lookout Mountain from town. It’s one of the more challenging hikes in Golden but it’s gorgeous and absolutely worth it if you are relatively fit and have the time to hike it.

8. Drive a Scenic Byway From Golden to Evergreen

If you are a fan of scenic drives, then don’t miss the Lariat Loop which starts in Golden and links it to Lookout Mountain, Morrison, and Evergreen – two more of the beautiful mountain towns near Denver .

You can easily spend a day driving the Lariat Loop, stopping off along the way to check out lovely mountain towns, all the attractions on Lookout Mountain, and the numerous scenic viewpoints along the way.

9. Marvel at Dinosaur Fossils

The area around Golden is a fantastic place to see fossilized dinosaur footprints and imprints of prehistoric plants and bird footprints.

Do the short Triceratops trail right by town or walk the two-mile Dinosaur Ridge trail just outside of town to see even more impressive fossilized footprints and dinosaur bones!

Both trails are paved and easily accessible so are a great option for the whole family.

10. Experience Red Rocks

You can’t miss visiting Red Rocks Amphitheatre when in the area – it is definitely one of the best and most unique things to do in Golden.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of the best places in the world to see a performance, with incredible natural acoustics and one of the most gorgeous settings, surrounded by jutting red rocks and with views all the way to Denver in the distance.

It is definitely a splurge to see a band perform here, but for a more affordable Red Rocks experience, go see a film on the rocks – you get to sit in the amphitheater and there is even pre-entertainment which is usually a comedian. Tickets start at $20.

Even if you aren’t able to see a band or go to a film, you should definitely still visit to check out the Amphitheater, the historic Trading Post, and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame – it’s free to enter all three.

You should definitely do one of the hikes at Red Rocks too – either the Red Rocks Trail or the shorter Trading Post trail which gets you up close and personal with these wondrous red rocks.

11. Go Back in Time at the Golden History Park

Golden History Park is a grouping of historic buildings, like a little village, right by Clear Creek.

The buildings are not always open – actually, they seem to hardly ever be open, but your best bet, if you do want to see inside, is to visit on a weekend in summer, especially a holiday weekend.

There is a school, various historic cabins, a blacksmith shop, and more. When they are open, there are costumed interpreters that will tell you about what life was like in Golden and other places in Colorado in the late 19th Century.

Even if nothing is open when you are visiting, it’s still a great place to take photos, peek in the windows, feed the chickens, and read the information panels to find out more about Golden’s storied past.

12. Buy Local at the Golden Farmer’s Market

I love a Farmer’s Market and always try to catch them when I am on the road because it’s a great way to get a feel for the community of a place, as well as supporting local businesses and farmers, and getting to sample delicious local produce and foodstuffs.

The Golden Farmer’s Market is on a Saturday and every time I have visited it is always bustling with locals and visitors. Grab a coffee, wander the food and art stalls, enjoy the live music, and treat yourself to breakfast or lunch from one of the food vendors.

13. Bike the Clear Creek Trail

As well as hiking trails, Golden is also a great place to bike, and the Clear Creek trail is an easy and pretty trail you can take as far as you feel like – you can connect with other bike trails and make it all the way to Denver if you wanted.

Bring your own bike or you can rent one from one of the many bike rental shops in town.

If you are feeling energetic, you can bike the 20 miles return to Wheat Ridge along the river – it’s a beautiful ride and you could stop off in Olde Town Arvada to check out the lovely downtown area there.

14. Enjoy the Best Fall Colors Close to Denver

Colorado is home to some of the most impressive fall colors in the country and fall is my favorite time of year here.

A lot of the more impressive fall displays are further into the mountains but there are a couple of spots in Golden that are definitely worth seeing in fall – especially Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

The fall colors at the park tend to peak around the middle of September to the beginning of October, but right in town in October, there is a gorgeous display of golden cottonwood trees along Clear Creek too.

15. Tour Coors Brewery

I have actually never done this tour myself as I am not a fan of Coors beer but I felt like I should add it as I have heard it is interesting, and you get a very generous tasting session at the end. You will have to tell me how it is, maybe I will do it myself one day.

Tours go for $20 including a tasting at the end, or it is $10 for tasting in the lounge only. 

So there you have it, all my favorite things to do in Golden CO – and none of them will break the bank. I hope you enjoy this gorgeous town as much as I do.

Where To Stay in Golden

If you are traveling in an RV or with a tent, you should definitely stay at the Clear Creek RV Park – it’s right by the river and only a few minutes walk from town. It books out fast so make sure to reserve your spot.

There are also lots of great hotels and cheap motels to choose from in Golden, stay at the adobe-style boutique Table Mountain Inn  right in downtown Golden, the newly-built  The Eddy Taproom and Hotel  which has mountain views and is perched on a hill above town, or  The Golden Hotel  on the river right in town.

8 Best Things to Do in Golden Colorado in One Day

Golden, Colorado, is one of the most underrated destinations to visit in the Denver area. Many of the best things to do in Golden Colorado are located near each other, making visiting with only 24 hours even easier.

When we moved to Denver, visiting Golden was actually at the top of our list. We have a soft spot for cute mountain towns , and our extensive research showed us that Golden was one of those places. So, one winter day, we made our way to Golden from LoDo.

Because of how much we loved our trip, we’ve rounded up the ultimate list of the best things to do in Golden Colorado so that you can have a great visit, too.

How to Get to Golden Colorado

There are quite a few ways to get to Golden, Colorado. The following modes of transportation are specifically for getting to Golden from Denver, but many of them can be applicable no matter where you’re traveling to Golden from.

The easiest way to get to Golden is by car. It only takes about twenty minutes from downtown Denver to get to Golden. The drive is easy, and the scenery gets more beautiful the closer you get to Golden because you’ll get closer to the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Another option is to combine Lyft/Uber and the light rail. From Union Station, you can hop on the W train towards Jeffco and get off at Jefferson County Government Center – Golden Station. From there, order a Lyft/Uber to somewhere in downtown Golden, like the Table Mountain Inn. 

This may seem like many steps, but if you’re visiting the area without a car, it’s completely doable to get to Golden this way. In fact, on our very first trip to Golden, we used Lyft and the light rail because we didn’t own a car just yet.

How to Get Around Golden CO

The easiest way to get around Golden is to use your own two feet, especially if you plan on mostly exploring the downtown area. Many of the top attractions are near each other, which is why it’s so easy to walk.

Another option is to use a car if you happen to drive to Golden. Lyft and Uber are also other ways to get around Golden if you travel a bit wider in the area versus just exploring downtown.

Lastly, FlexRide is a choice for getting around. This bus has quite a few stops throughout Golden, making it easy to get around at an affordable price. Keep in mind that it’s not in use during weekends or on Sundays.

When to Visit Golden Colorado

Truthfully, there is no wrong time to visit Golden. Colorado is one state that has near-perfect weather no matter the time of year, which is a bit of a secret!

As you might have guessed, most people visit Golden during the summer. The weather during this time can get pretty hot, averaging the high 80s. Try visiting during another time of year because this is considered peak season if you can avoid it.

Winter is a great time to visit if you want to do winter adventure sports. Golden usually gets quite a bit of snow during the winter and the temperature averages around 44°F.

Spring and fall can also be great times to visit if you can get the time off! Spring and fall temperatures are around 60°F.

Where to Stay in Golden Colorado

Because Golden isn’t a large city, there aren’t many places to stay here. Luckily, there are still some great places worth staying.

Table Mountain Inn

The best place to stay in Golden is the  Table Mountain Inn ! It’s located directly in downtown Golden, and if you’re lucky, you’ll even have a room with a balcony with great views of Lookout Mountain.

This can be a pricier hotel, with nightly rates averaging between $200 and $300 a night, depending on the room type you choose to book. What makes this hotel even better is that it has its own cantina with fantastic food (speaking from experience!). The quesadillas are to die for.

The Silk Pincushion

For more homey accommodation, you could consider staying at  The Silk Pincushion . Prices start at around $150 a night, and no room costs more than $200 (depending on the time of year).

The Silk Pincushion is a bed and breakfast with strong Victorian vibes. It tends to be a great place to stay if you’re traveling with just two people, making it an excellent accommodation for a romantic getaway in Golden. This bed and breakfast is not that far from Coors Brewery or Dinosaur Ridge.

Hampton Inn Denver – West/Golden

Another option for accommodation is the  Hampton Inn . It’s about three miles from downtown Golden and has a lot of room options. Some of the rooms can even host up to five guests at a time. If you’re traveling with a large group, this could be an excellent place for you to stay!

Rooms range in price between $200 and $220, depending on the time of year. Breakfast is included, and every room includes a microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker. Plus, there’s a gym that all guests are allowed to use.

Best Things to do in Golden Colorado with 1 Day

One day in Golden Colorado is the perfect amount of time to explore the town, especially if you’re a first-time visitor! If you plan your day wisely, you’ll easily have an unforgettable trip.

Grab breakfast from a local shop

Because Golden is a small town, there are many different local places to eat! Luckily, this itinerary includes many of them.

Start your day out right by grabbing a coffee from  Higher Grounds Cafe . It’s located near downtown Golden, and it’s one of the most popular coffee shops in town for both locals and tourists. 

They also have delicious cafe treats like donuts, scones, and more. Plus, Higher Grounds Cafe opens early, around 5:30 a.m., so no matter what time you start your day, they’ll probably be open.

For a more sit-down type of breakfast, consider heading to  The Golden Diner . They offer almost any kind of breakfast you can think of, including pancakes, waffles, eggs, and even breakfast burritos.

Hike Lookout Mountain Nature Center

Like there are many  free things to do in Denver , there are also free things to do in Golden. Hiking Lookout Mountain is easily one of the best free things to do here.

After filling your stomach with delicious local breakfast food, head over to Lookout Mountain and be prepared to get one of the best views in the entire town! No visit to Golden is complete without hiking up at least one trail on Lookout Mountain.

Arguably the easiest trail to hike on Lookout Mountain is the  Windy Saddle Trail . This trail is only about 4.5 miles long, and the elevation gain is a little more than 700 feet. It’s ranked as a moderate trail but can become more difficult if you happen to hike after it rains because the path is prone to getting muddy. Overall, this trail will take, on average, between two and three hours to hike.

If you’re not a fan of hiking, consider going for a walk along the Clear Creek Path. This is a lot easier, but it is still very calming and has excellent views along the way. Visiting this area is one of the best outdoor activities in Golden!

Eat lunch at a local restaurant

Similar to breakfast, there are a lot of great places to eat locally for lunch. Here are a few of the top-rated options!

Bonfire Burritos  is the perfect place to go to try delicious Colorado burritos. Make sure you order one with green chile, which is a local delicacy. There isn’t a lot of outdoor seating here for you to enjoy the weather, but there are many seats inside.

For an A+ burger, head to  Bob’s Atomic Burgers . This restaurant offers tons of burgers, hot dogs, and more. Plus, no burger is complete without a side of fries and a milkshake, which also are on the menu.

Woody’s Pizza  is the top-rated pizza place in the area and is one of the best restaurants in Golden. There’s tons of outdoor seating, and it’s been a Golden staple for twenty years and counting. Plus, there are tons of pizza choices, so even if you’re a picky eater, you’ll be able to find something for yourself on the menu.

Go on a Coors Brewery Tour

A trip to Golden Colorado isn’t complete without going on a  tour of Coors Brewery . Luckily, there’s a shuttle that will bring you from downtown right to the brewery, so you can still go on the tour if you aren’t traveling with a car.

Tours are usually only during the afternoon, so make sure you hop in line ASAP. If you can book tickets ahead of time, make sure to do so!

Learn at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Because of Golden’s Old West heritage, you’ll have to make sure you head over to  Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave . It’s filled with exhibits about William F. Cody (also known as “Buffalo Bill”) and has been open for 100 years as of 2021.

The museum isn’t massive, so it won’t take a lot of time to explore. However, it’s still well worth it to go in and at least spend an hour or two learning more about the local history while visiting Golden.

Explore downtown Golden

Before you grab dinner and get ready to wind down for the evening, head to historic downtown Golden! This is where you can find most shops, restaurants, cafes, and more. Even if you’re just window shopping, this is a super fun place to explore.

While you’re in downtown Golden, make sure you take a photo with the giant “Welcome to Golden” arch sign that crosses over the road. It’s pretty iconic and looks great in photos.

Eat dinner at another local restaurant

After exploring downtown Golden, you’re probably ready for dinner! Here are a few of the best restaurants for dinner in the area.

Buffalo Rose  doubles as a restaurant and an entertainment spot, making it the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. It opened in 1858 and has been a staple in Golden ever since. The menu is filled with cocktails, sandwiches, salads, and more. There’s also a kid’s menu in case you’re traveling with children.

We ate here once when family visited and loved the atmosphere inside. KP ordered a chicken Caesar salad that she absolutely loved.

Another great place to grab a bite to eat is the  Table Mountain Cantina ! If you happen to be staying at the Table Mountain Inn, you’re in luck; the restaurant is located inside the hotel. There’s indoor and outdoor seating. 

If there are spots outside, definitely ask to be seated there. You’ll be rewarded with great views of Lookout Mountain. The menu here includes many great Mexican dishes, including quesadillas, tacos, and more.

Are you traveling with picky eaters, or do you want to have more options when dining? Go to  Tributary Food Hall . There are around ten different vendors inside, with foods including gyros, poke, pizza, pasta, bbq, and more. Plus, there’s a gelato shop and a crepe place so that you can grab dessert right after!

Finish the night with drinks

There’s no better way to finish the night and your 24 hours in Golden Colorado than by heading to a local joint to grab a drink. This is one of the best things to do at night in Golden.

If you want a place that will bring you back in time, head to the  Miners Saloon . They have tons of drinks, and the inside will immediately take you back in time to when the city was home to lots of miners.

Golden Moon Speakeasy  is another excellent place to grab a drink in downtown Golden. They have tons of cocktails, and the interior is gorgeous with tons of fun fairy lights and a speakeasy vibe.

As you can see, there are tons of great things to do in Golden. No matter what time of year you’re visiting, you’ll have a memorable experience here.

Looking to spend a day in golden, colorado, but not sure how to make the ultimate itinerary don’t fret .

Well known as a picturesque town nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Golden offers its visitors breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and endless activities to enjoy. 

From hiking trails and rock climbing routes to craft breweries and art galleries, there’s no shortage of things to do when visiting Golden. 

After spending a summer exploring some of the most unique towns in the state, I’ve partnered with Emily at Sea to Summit Alaska and we’ve created the perfect one-day itinerary for you to get the most out of Golden.

A Day in Golden, Colorado

If you’re looking for a great day trip from Denver , then look no further than Golden, Colorado. This small town was once a booming gold rush town, although that’s surprisingly not where the name came from. It was actually named after a miner called Tom Golden. But these days there are more things to do in Golden CO than search for gold. This charming place at the gateway to the Rocky Mountains, and a great place to spend a day exploring some of Colorado’s history.

Where is Golden, Colorado?

Only 12 miles west of Denver , Golden is one of the easiest places to get to from the city. Freeway most of the way, it’s less than half an hour’s drive from downtown Denver. Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the USA’s best national parks , is a favorite final destination for many who visit Golden. Use Golden as a fun detour to a much longer Rockies adventure.

How To Get To Golden?

Given that Golden is in such a beautiful area that you will want to explore more of, a car is recommended to get here. That way you can make it a stop on your way to other popular locations like Rocky Mountain National Park , Golden Gate State Park and even the famous Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater.

If you don’t want to rent a car , or don’t have access to one, you can still get to Golden easily enough. From Union Station in Downtown Denver it’s about an hour of travel time. A combination of light rail and local bus will get you there pretty hassle free.

Golden History Museum

Where are the history nerds at? If you’re anything like me you’ll enjoy learning a bit more about the town of Golden the same as any place you might visit. The history museum also has some interactive activities for kids and a theater playing old videos and movies of the town. The best part? The museum is free, although donations are always welcomed. Clear Creek Trail

Clear Creek runs right through the town of Golden. There is a scenic trail running either side of it, connected by a pedestrianized footbridge close to the history museum. The trail also offshoots into various corners of the town along the water’s edge.

While the trail runs in either direction and is a total of 20 miles in length, the central portion of the trail near the main street is the most popular. If you like the sound of the Clear Creek Trail you’ll probably also enjoy a visit to Parfet Park. Adjacent to both Clear Creek and Washington Ave, Parfet Park is the best place to hang out in the nice weather.

Golden History Park

Bet you can’t guess which famous brewery has had its brewery in Golden for 150 years. It’s Coors, one of the nation’s most popular beers. And while it might not be the most unique beer Colorado has to offer (they have a lot of great craft beer), beer lovers may enjoy a tour of the brewery.

The 30 minute tour walks you through the beer making process as well as the history of the brewery. See old photos and memorabilia, and end the tour with some tasters. Still thirsty for more? Visit a craft brewery in town such as Golden City Brewery or Mountain Toad Brewing. Beer recommendation: Try Mountain Toad’s seasonal Lavender Belgian golden ale.

Plan Some Water Activities

Visit a brewery or two for a mid-afternoon rest from all the walking. Most have a food truck within walking distance if you want some non-brewed sustenance. Then end your day with a feast at El Dorado Mexican Restaurant , a colorful local restaurant with a generous sized menu and incredible mountain views.

Stay in Golden a little longer

Not quite ready to leave Golden? Plan for longer than a day trip and explore more of the city. Book an overnight stay and see what else the area has to offer. Just outside of downtown Golden is the Colorado Railroad Museum. For anyone who likes trains (guilty!) it’s a great place to check out.

Also a visit to the national and state parks nearby should be high on anyone’s list. Golden Gate Canyon State Park has incredible rock climbing opportunities.

It wouldn’t be a trip to the West, wild or not, without a bit of cowboy history. You may have heard of Buffalo Bill – and I don’t mean the wings place. He was a buffalo hunter who traveled west and gained notoriety in the US and abroad. The museum tells of his story, and his respect for the Native Americans. And this is also where he is buried with his grave as the most visited place on site.

Golden is less than 30 minutes from Denver by car, just over 15 miles away. It’s super easy to get to even by transit which takes about an hour

There’s no doubt about it – with an almost 20% increase in growth since 2010, Denver is much more crowded than it used to be. Fortunately for residents, the capitol city also happens to be in close proximity to some of the best destinations for natural scenery and culture in the United States.

If you’re daydreaming about your next quick excursion out of the Mile High City , we’ve rounded up ten fantastic day trip options, which average about an hour and a half drive or less out of town. We cover both the mountains and the plains for your next short road trip. The specific activities below are just a tiny fraction of the attractions found in the ten regions.

Here are the best one day trips near Denver, CO , in no particular order:

1. Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park

Folks from around the world travel far and wide to experience the natural wonders of Rocky Mountain National Park , but Denverites merely need to hop in the car and drive an hour and a half north to get there. Rocky Mountain National Park boasts 415 square miles of pristine mountainous terrain to explore, which is packed with 300 miles of hiking trails, a perfect antidote to Denver’s growing traffic woes.

The park is home to Longs Peak, a mountain celebrated for its imposing beauty and challenging climbing routes. In addition to Longs, there are an astounding 100 plus other peaks in the park that are 11,000 feet or more.

Rocky Mountain National Park offers conventional and wilderness camping, fishing, a plethora of wildlife to appreciate, and the Trail Ridge Road , which gives visitors astounding Rocky Mountain views from a 12,000 ft. perspective. However, we should note that weather conditions this high tend to get extreme, so the Trail Ridge Road and some of the park’s other offerings aren’t accessible during Colorado’s colder months.

If Rocky Mountain National Park isn’t enough to sell you on this day trip, the charming mountain town of Estes Park just down the road should do the trick. With plenty of whitewater rafting, golfing, and climbing options to explore and delectable restaurants to dine in, Estes Park is the quintessential Colorado mountain town .

Try Bird and Jim , an intrepid Colorado-centric establishment offering up sustainable local options. The town isn’t big, but it’s home to multiple breweries, two wineries, and a distillery to relax in after a day of exploring.

2. Pikes Peak Region

An hour and a half drive south from Denver offers some stunning natural wonders and a slowed down pace compared to life in Colorado’s largest city. Cave of the Winds is a mountain park home to a massive network of caves to explore through guided tours. Some tours are lit by handheld lanterns and others that require visitors to crawl and squeeze their way through narrow openings.

Nearby Pikes Peak is a famous mountain destination suited for ambitious climbing fanatics and road-tripping families alike. Described as an “ultra-prominent peak” for its impressive topographic prominence, this 14,115-foot beast offers challenging climbing routes and a mountainous highway letting the non-athletic among us ascend the peak’s summit.

Sitting just between the city of Colorado Springs and the front range is the stunning Garden of The Gods Visitor and Nature Center. From climbing, biking, and jeeping adventures to trails ideal for meditation and relaxation, the otherworldly red rock backdrop of Garden of The Gods is a perfect setting for whatever outdoor plans you have.

Consistently ranking as one of America’s best zoos, the nearby Cheyenne Mountain Zoo lets visitors feed giraffes and ride the Mountaineer Sky Ride Tram. It leads up to the top its namesake mountain to get spectacular views of the zoo and surrounding Pikes Peak region.

3. Central City/Black Hawk

Many Denver residents fly to Las Vegas to get their gambling fix when there’s great, legal options under an hour’s drive to the west. Situated in Gilpin County, Central City and Blackhawk region might not be very large, but it’s home to some of the state’s most interesting history stories.

For example, there was a time when Central City had more money and culture than Denver, and was so influential in the region that it almost became the capital when Colorado officially achieved statehood in 1876. Today, Blackhawk and Central City are ideal for a quick trip to gamble, explore gorgeous mountain environments, and dine in establishments that embrace the look, feel, and fare of the old mountain west. Central City and Black Hawk are similar places, but feature important unique characteristics aimed at serving different crowds.

With streets lined with authentic salons, hotels, and casinos, Central City is the quieter city of the two, and is geared more towards history lovers and families. After visiting the town’s notable attractions like the Central City Opera House , consider a five minute drive to an old ghost town, Nevadaville .

Black Hawk is fun, rowdy, and marketed towards adults looking to win big in a gorgeous mountain setting. If you’re looking for a way to round out your day trip with a little nature, drive 40 minutes west and you’ll reach St Mary’s Glacier, which offers great hiking year round. Remember to bring an extra $5 for parking if you choose to venture to this gorgeous spot.

4. Boulder/Nederland

Boulder and Nederland are two very different Colorado day trip destinations with a lot to offer Denver residents. Boulder is a near perfect blend of city and nature. Flanked by mountains and approachable hiking trails and bike paths, the city has become a bona fide internationally recognized culinary destination in recent years, as evidenced by restaurants like Frasca Food and Wine, which picked up a James Beard Award earlier this year.

A day trip can be topped off with an evening show at one of the city’s incredible music venues including the Fox Theater, Boulder Theater, or the beloved Chautauqua Auditorium.

Tucked up away in the mountains, the town of Nederland is Boulder’s unpretentious and eccentric little sister. This small community is an excellent home base for mountain adventures like fishing, rock climbing, and backpacking. With an elevation of 8,228 feet, Nederland is close to Rocky Mountain National Park and the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area , so this day trip is for you if you’re looking for a charming mountain town surrounded by gorgeous Colorado nature.

The actual town of Nederland itself shouldn’t be missed, which is home to the phenomenal New Moon Bakery , several fine breweries, and a stellar wood-fired pizza joint .

5. Fort Collins

Home to Colorado State University, Fort Collins consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in the country, and has proven itself to be much more than a college town . It’s also a fine day trip option just a little over an hour’s drive north from Denver on I-25.

If you dig beer, you’ll adore Fort Collins, which is home to an astounding amount of internationally celebrated breweries like New Belgium and Odell . Even Budweiser has a brewery tour here. Lesser known but still outstanding microbreweries like Funkwerks and Crooked Stave are can’t miss. If you’re after some tasty, farm-to-table food, check out the Fortified Farm Dinner Series , which serves up fresh food from local farmers. The city also hosts loads of nightly and seasonal music performances at venues like the Aggie Theater and Hodi’s Half Note.

Like Boulder, Fort Collins is also surrounded by a great deal of natural beauty, making it a prime spot to embrace the outdoors from. Horsetooth Reservoir is known for its excellent fishing and offers boat and kayak rentals at its marina. The nearby Cache la Poudre River Canyon is perfect for whitewater rafting excursions , hikes, a scenic drive , or even picturesque picnicking if that’s what you’re after. It’s such a beautiful, unique place that it’s one of only three National Heritage Areas in the state.

6. Deckers/Pine

The Deckers and Pine area is an outstanding option if you’re looking for a minimal drive with plentiful outdoor recreational activities to enjoy. For families with young kids, Pine Valley Ranch Park offers a small pond with manageable fishing conditions, hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty, and loads of mountainous space to roam in.

Located just south of the town of Pine , the North Fork South Platte River offers prime Rainbow and Brown Trout fishing for serious anglers, while the sharp, jutting rocks in the Cathedral Spires offers a rewarding climb you’ll have to work for to see. For provisions, check out Zoka’s , a fine restaurant and bar located in the town of Pine. This highly reviewed spot offers craft beer and home-grown produce.

A little further to the south, you’ll find Deckers , a spot famous for its incredible fishing. Legendary trout are said to roam the waters of the South Platte River and Cheesman Lake, the former flows past town, while the latter is only 15 minutes outside of it.

The Deckers area also offers incredible mountain biking, hiking, and bird-watching options on its various trails. When you’ve tuckered yourself out for the day, treat yourself to a nice beer, milkshake, or cafe at Decker’s Corner . The Devil’s Head Lookout is a bit out of the way if you’re heading back to Denver, but its manageable hiking conditions and stellar front range views will end your day trip in spectacular fashion.

7. Summit County

Let’s get this out of the way. It’s not a secret that Summit County is home to some of the nation’s best skiing, which is hosted by resorts like Breckenridge and Keystone. Depending on traffic, you can generally get to these resorts in under two hours from Denver. But if you’re only visiting Summit County for its incredible skiing, you’re missing out.

Let’s start with the mountain towns in this county. Places like Breckenridge and Frisco are fun, walkable destinations that provide plenty of opportunities to take in culture and friendly alpine town charm. Declared a historic landmark in 2017 , the Gold Pan Saloon was established in 1879 and is still slinging tasty libations to patrons from its home in Breckenridge. It has the honor of having the longest continuous liquor license of any establishment west of the Mississippi River. Breck is also home to multiple nationally recognized art galleries.

While Summit County’s towns are great, we can’t talk about this day trip without mentioning its phenomenal outdoor offerings. From affordable boat, canoe and kayak rentals on Dillon Reservoir to mountain hikes ideal for viewing fall foliage and summer wildflowers, Summit County provides more neat natural recreational opportunities than you can shake a stick at. If you’re looking for a manageable but gorgeous hike in Summit County, try the Mohawk Lakes trail, a 6.6-mile hike located south of Breckenridge.

8. Evergreen/Mount Evans

Our next day trip is under an hour’s drive from Denver and offers something great for solo travelers, groups of friends, and families alike. The town of Evergreen is a 40-minute drive from Denver and is a great option for busy Denverties wanting to experience a fun mountain atmosphere without taking a long drive. Evergreen has a lot to offer, including live music, a surprising amount of spas, paved and natural biking and hiking trails, and a big, gorgeous lake that hosts an incredible ice skating rink over the winter months. Solid conventional and ice fishing conditions are typically reported at Lake Evergreen.

The top of Mount Evans is a little over an hour and a half drive from Denver, and only about 30 minutes to the start of this scenic byway west of Evergreen, so it’s well worth the trip. It boasts the highest paved road in North America, which ascends almost 4,000 feet to the peak’s 14,264-foot summit. If climbing is your preferred method of scaling this beast, you’ll have plenty of Class 2 and 3 routes to choose from, which range up to 17 miles in length.

On your way to or from Mount Evans, make sure to check out Echo Lake , which offers solid fishing, camping, and hiking trails. Back on 1-70, you’ll find the little town of Idaho Springs , a spot you’ve probably driven past but might never have checked out. If you’re tuckered out after a long day of exploring, you can’t go wrong with a pizza from Beau Jo’s or a soak in the mineral water pool at the Indian Hot Springs .

This day trip is a bit obvious for most Denver residents, but it’s still worth mentioning because of how terrific it is. At a mere 30 minutes away from the Mile High City, Golden is the perfect gateway to Colorado mountain recreation. For decades, residents have taken inflatable tubes down the manageable rapids of Clear Creek , and you can rent them in town at Adventure West Tube Rental if you don’t want to bother with bringing your own.

There are loads of hikes located just minutes away from Golden’s town center, including the scenic and easy-going Chimney Gulch Trail and the more challenging Mt Galbraith Loop Trail. As you’d expect, Golden boasts plenty of fine bars and restaurants to check out after a day of floating on Clear Creek or hiking in the area.

Since Golden is so close to the capital, you might as well take the extra short drive up to Lookout Mountain for its excellent hiking opportunities and sublime views of Denver, the eastern plains, and beyond. Lookout Mountain is also home to the historical Buffalo Bill Museum and gravesite.

And, last but not least, a day trip out to the Golden area isn’t complete without a tour of the Coors Brewery . Even if Coors isn’t your thing, this fun, information-packed tour is probably worth your time, and might give you an entirely new appreciation of one of Colorado’s most beloved beverages. Although it gets really busy on summer weekends, so reconsider a brewery tour during peak times.

10. Eastern Plains

Most people living in Denver think of day trip options and focus their thoughts to the mountain west, but there are actually some great opportunities for adventure and relaxation out to the east in Colorado’s plains region. Drive 45 minutes to the northeast of Denver on 1-76, and you’ll stumble upon 789 acres devoted to helping rescued animals live and roam freely.

Located just outside of Keenesburg, the Wild Animal Sanctuary saves lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and other animals from egregious captive situations. Much more than a zoo, the sanctuary gives visitors unique views of its saved animal population from a 1.5-mile long elevated walkway and the satisfaction of knowing their ticket fees are going towards a worthy cause. The Wild Animal Sanctuary is phenomenal for families searching for an unconventional way to enjoy and support animals in need.

If you’re looking to catch some scenic eastern plains action on your trip, consider checking out the Colorado Wildlife Banner Lakes just to the north of the sanctuary. It’s a serene wetland area that’s been preserved to protect Colorado waterfowl, and is a fine spot for a quick walk or a picnic.

Just outside the town of Calhan on the plains northeast of Colorado Springs is home to one of Colorado’s best kept natural secrets. Paint Mines Interpretive Park showcases 750 acres of astounding natural and human historical sites. The park is brimming with otherworldly rock formations featuring stunning natural colors, shapes and evidence of human activity dating back 9,000 years. Ancient Native Americans are said to have mined materials from the area for pottery and ceremonial painting purposes.

Paint Mines offers phenomenal hiking and sightseeing to visitors seven days a week for absolutely free. Sadly, current reviews of the sight complain the park’s natural wonders are being destroyed by visitors who climb the formations, so do your part to preserve the park by staying on the designated trails and following the rules. On your way back to Denver, consider stopping at the Pop A Top Saloon in the nearby town of Peyton. Pop A Top is known for its strong drinks, surprisingly tasty bar food, and welcoming atmosphere.

FOUR SCENIC DRIVES AROUND GOLDEN, COLORADO

Summer is a perfect time for an afternoon drive. You can beat the heat by setting out on a driving adventure. Load up on snacks, blast your favorite tunes and check out all the cool things in the nearby mountains. Here are four short, scenic drives near Golden, Colorado that make for a perfect afternoon escape. 

The Lariat Loop Trail

The Old West and Red Rocks Loop  

Hwy. 93 and The Back Road to Boulder  

The most interesting way to drive Boulder from Denver is to head west to Golden, then go north on Hwy. 93. This is one of the last undeveloped stretches of road along the Front Range for two good reasons. Large parts of it have been preserved as open space by Boulder and now offer ranch lands, canal walks and pretty grass fields with the Flatirons as a backdrop. The east side of the road was preserved because it was Rocky Flats, a high security area where the triggers for nuclear bombs were once made. All 70,000 atomic bombs made by the U.S. have parts that were made at Rocky Flats. The bombs are long gone, and Rocky Flats is being restored and brought back as a wildlife refuge. Trails, biking and horseback riding will soon be open in the area.  

In addition to the scenic drive, two attractions along Hwy. 93 are well worth a stop. Eldorado Canyon State Park is one of the world’s top rock climbing attractions. The sheer 500-foot high cliffs here are dotted with climbers, seeming to defy gravity. If you’re not a rock climber, you’ll still love the views, the scenic river flowing through the center of the canyon, and a wonderful one-mile trail that is an old abandoned railroad cut, every inch of it offering incredible scenery into the canyon.

In South Boulder is the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The buildings were designed by I.M. Pei, who also designed the pyramid at the Louvre in Paris. NCAR is considered one of his masterpieces and was also used in the Woody Allen movie, “Sleeper.” There’s also an outdoor half-mile Weather Trail that explains some of the unique aspects of weather in Colorado. From here, you can backtrack down scenic Hwy. 93 to Golden, for a quick stop in one of the town's restaurants or breweries.

You'll also want to look for the colorful dinosaur art installations just outside of Golden. Spot the colorful Triceratops sculptures, located off Hwy 93, near 56th Ave.

Clear Creek Canyon to Central City and the “Oh My God Road”

After a delicious brunch in one of Golden’s many outdoor cafes, head up Hwy. 6  through Clear Creek Canyon. This is one of the narrowest, steepest and most dramatic canyons in Colorado, and is internationally known as a rock climbing area. Depending on restrictions, you might see rafters, kayakers, fishermen, and even gold-panners along the way. Stop at Mayhem Gulch Trailhead, 12 miles west of Golden, and hike for a bit on the new Peaks to Plains Trail. One day, this trail will stretch from Idaho Springs all the way to Golden. Currently, there are four miles of creek side paved trails.  

At the junction with Hwy. 119, turn right to Black Hawk, the largest gambling center in Colorado with 10,000 slot machines, poker, Black Jack and roulette in nearly two dozen casinos. From Black Hawk, turn left and climb one mile to the historic mining town of Central City. Once called the “richest spot on earth,” Central City in the 1870s had a population of 30,000 and was the largest gold rush boom town in Colorado. On the hills and dirt roads above town, you’ll find historic graveyards, old mines and ghost towns, while the town itself is a treasure-trove of beautiful brick and stone Victorian buildings.  

Southwest of the town, look for signs for the Virginia Canyon Road, known to locals as the “Oh My God Road.” Legend has it that it got its name because stage coach passengers would look out the window at the sheer drop offs and moan, “Oh My God!” You might too, as you twist and turn on a narrow dirt road with no guardrails and steep cliffs. There are beautiful views of Mount Evans along the way, but key your eyes on the road, go slow, pause on narrow turns, and follow signs for Idaho Springs, another old gold mining town worth a stop. From here, you can take I-70 east for a few miles until the exit for Hwy. 6 and a return to Golden through scenic Clear Creek Canyon, viewing the dramatic rock formations from a different direction.

The Great North American eclipse is Monday, April 8 and skywatchers – with proper glasses, of course – are ready to see the moon blocking out the sun during a solar eclipse.

What you will see, how long it will last and when it will take place will depend on where you live. While all states in the contiguous U.S. will experience some level of the eclipse, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as small parts of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee are along the path of totality and will experience the greatest periods of darkness.

In the U.S., the path of totality will start in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CT and will end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. ET (2:25 CT.) In those states, the periods of greatest darkness will reach up to 4 minutes, 27 seconds.

Scientists say the sun is approaching its maximum activity of its cycle this year, meaning it will be sending off more solar flares and eruptions from its surface — potentially making this year’s total solar eclipse much more dynamic.

The path of totality will start in Mexico and move across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before heading out over the North Atlantic. Small portions of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee will also experience almost the entirety of the eclipse. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

During the eclipse, the sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of totality will be able to see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun, NASA explains. Outside the path of totality, viewers will see a partial eclipse with the moon covering varying degrees of the sun.

Although Alabama is not in the path of “totality” during the April 8 eclipse – meaning we won’t see total darkness when the moon covers the sun – residents will see from 78 to 92 percent coverage, depending on location.

People viewing the eclipse from the path of totality will be treated to the ghostly-white outer atmosphere of the sun, known as the corona, when the moon completely blocks out the sun’s disk during the total eclipse, NASA explained. Along the path, the sun will be blocked out for about 4-and-a-half minutes.

April 8 total solar eclipse: Texas officials warn people to stock up on food ahead of solar eclipse

Mike Jones, Hays County, Texas’s direct of the Office of Emergency Services, said the area is expecting thousands of visitors to arrive to see the eclipse. To prepare for the crowds, Jones advised residents to stock up on groceries and fill up on gas. If they are out on the day of the eclipse, he recommends residents “pack your patience.”

National Guard will be deployed for total solar eclipse on April 8

At the request of local emergency management officials, the Oklahoma National Guard will have members of the 63rd Civil Support Team available to assist local governments during the eclipse, including working with first responders with additional HAZMAT responses if needed.
