Tips to get the most of your Merlin Pass London

Use this pass if you want to see all 5 attractions on it. This is how you save the most money

Check online each attraction before hand.  The London Eye for example goes down for annual maintenance, usually in January. Don't be dissappointed!

You have to pre-book entry on some of the attractions. For example, Shrek's adventure is restricted to a specific time slot. Be careful you don't miss it .

Your booking confirmation will include links to how to book each attraction. Your first attraction – usually the London Eye – must have a fix and firm date that can't be changed. For the other attractions, you can change the booked date up to 5 times if your plans change within the 90 day window.

Is the Merlin Pass London worth it – Our opinion

As we covered in the review, the Merlin London pass is a good, basic, first timers pass. We'd rate this one as the best option for those travelling with kids as the savings can be pretty good.

However, if you want a more extensive list of attractions, or have been to London before , you might want to look elsewhere.  This is especially true if you are more into historical buildings, galleries and museums. Then I'll recommend the National Art Pass.

Merlin's Magical London Pass Review

What sets it apart from its competitors.

The Magic Merlin Pass offers easy and cheap access to some of the most expensive attractions in London. On top of that, you can personalise you pass. If you don't want to see the aquarium, then just bolt on four of the attractions instead of 5. You will save slightly less than if you visited all 5, but it means you won't feel like you have a wasted ticket.

In addition, you can bolt on some other options. There is an option for example to add on a Thames river cruise . You can upgrade your London Eye experience with champagne or fast track entry. We think the offers are pretty good for the first time visitor to London, especially if travelling with kids.

What can I save with the Merlin London Pass

If you proceed to buy your Merlin pass online you will safe a good lot of money. The 5 attractions pass for example is a real winner when it comes to savings. Here's the breakdown if you buy the tickets on their own on the Merlin magic pass website

  • London Eye standard entry  – Single Ticket £31
  • Madame Tussauds – Single Ticket £36
  • Sea Life London – Single Ticket £30
  • London Dungeon – Single Ticket £30
  • Shreks Adventure – Single Ticket £30

At the minute, the adult 5  Merlin attractions UK pass costs £70. That's a saving of £87 , which is pretty decent

For whom is the Merlin Pass London intended

First-time visitors and family.

The Merlin London Pass is a great choice for first time visitors to London . We are of the opinion that Merlins Magical London pass is especially good for those t ravelling with children.

The Merlin Pass London Eye ticket is great, as you can book ahead and guarantee your slot. And Madame Tussauds is certainly definitely an experience you should have once in your life. So, if you want to buy your Merlin pass to hit off the big ticket attractions, it is definitely one for you.

Visitors who like everything to be well organized

For those who prefer more flexibility, the Merlin 5 attraction pas s maybe doesn't cover enough. You don't have a Hop on Hop off bus, which is a definite downside. And unlike some of the the other big passes, you are really restricted with the tickets.

The 5 attractions are good, but if like us you are not interested in Aquariums or Madame Tussauds, it's a bit useless. If you want more independence in what attractions you see in London, or want to experience some of the less famous sights, you may want to look elsewhere.

family in london

Merlin Pass London Disadvantages

Whilst we feel the pass is great for the first time visitor who specifically has the 5 attractions in mind, the Magic Pass Merlin  has on offer is a bit restrictive.  For example, is a London eye boat cruise Merlin Pass on offer? No.

Asking your self “ where can I go with my Merlin Pass in London ” doesn't get you many hits either – the answer is 5 places, and you have to get there yourself.  We can't even find reference to a Merlin attractions map, but it is available online anyway.

There are also several Merlin standard pass restrictions. These apply to anyone who has booked a Merlin standard annual pass mainly (different to the Merlin Magical London Pass.)  But still, make sure you check the website before going to any of the attractions. For example, some get closed for maintenance or special events.

Merlin Pass London Benefits

For the first time visitor to London,  Merlin entertainments is trying to appeal to you! The 5 attractions are some of the most popular, and are probably the best they could have picked for a London 5 attractions pass. Of course, London has lots more to offer. Maybe you could combine the tickets with some of the other great f ree things to do in London?

With your tickets you can pre book entry slots to the attractions. Merlin's magical London pass offers you the chance to tick off the top hitters with maximum flexibility when in London.

merlin pass london Madame Tussauds

Public Transport Option

Unfortunately, unlike some other passes,  there is not a hop  on hop off bus or travel card included with the pass.  This is a bit of a disadvantage. Hop on Hop off buses on the other passes, such as the London City Pass , offer the first time visitor a great overview of the city. They also help you save money on one day as you can use the pass to get from A to B. For a London 5 attraction pass, we think one attraction should have been a Hop on Hop off Bus tour.

How to use the Merlin Pass London

Is the Merlin Annual Pass the same as the Merlin London Pass?

Don't get confused between the basic Merlin London Pass - usually for visitors - and the Merlin Annual Pass. The Merlin Annual Pass - or the Merlin Pass UK as it is sometimes known, is more suited for those who live in the United Kingdom. This all encompassing pass includes a wide range of Merlin entertainments attractions. These sites are not only in London, but also located throughout the UK. Over 30 UK top sites feature on this Merlin entertainment pass. Check out Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, Legoland and many more nationwide attractions. The annual pass is a great option for UK residents or those who visit the UK a lot with family. Prices start at £179 for a standard Merlin Annual Pass per adult. Premium adult annual passes (which include free parking and priority entry) are £229 per person.

What is the Merlin Family Pass?

This is a decent all rounder pass for first time – and family – visitors to London . We'd be happy to recommend this for those wanting a fun taste of what London offers the whole clan.  If you are a seasoned traveler, or like more flexibility in how you can visit attractions, you may want to check out some of the other passes we recommend.

Do I buy through Big City Saver, the individual attraction's website or a third party?

Prices are variable depending on day of week/time of year visiting.

If you purchase through the Merlin website you'll find that it is cheaper to buy a 2,3 or 5 attraction pass for use on a weekday than if you visit at a weekend (excluding school holidays).

If you purchase through a third party website (such as Golden Tours - see banner below), the prices are the same (higher) price for either weekday or weekend.

Big City Saver offers more attraction combinations

The Big City Saver website offers a greater number of combinations than some third party websites.

Individual Merlin attraction websites

The Big City Saver website does not offer all possible combinations of attractions however - if you need a specific combination and they don't cover it, they recommend you to try the individual attraction's website where they also sell Merlin attractions passes.

Third party combinations (Golden Tours)

Golden Tours offer Merlin passes based around the 2-attraction option featuring Madame Tussauds with one other attraction.

They also feature a few passes featuring a combination of 3 attractions, as well as a 5 attraction pass.

At the moment, value wise, if you want all 5 attractions your best value is to go through Golden Tours as they have a sale on for 2024: all 5 attractions for just £80 per person. (See banner above.)

Golden Tours also offer Merlin Big City Saver Passes in combination with a hop-on bus tour of London.

How does the Big City Saver Pass work?

London Eye - included with Merlin's Magical London Pass

If you book direct with Big City Saver (see official link, above), you can choose various combinations of 2, 3, or 5 attraction passes. The greater the number of attractions, the bigger the savings per attraction.

Each pass has a 'lead attraction' (always the first attraction on the pass) which will be the first attraction you visit. You simply choose a date to visit your lead attraction and then after that you book the remaining number of attractions as you go.

You have 90 days from the date you exchange your voucher to visit the number of attractions (either 3 or 5) you have purchased just one time each. There is some flexibility on changing your tour time within the 90 days, provided you keep your bar-coded ticket.

If you need to reschedule for any reason you can also do this for free.

London Attractions 5 in 1 Pass

What savings can I make on a Big City Saver pass 2024?

Madame Tussauds - Little Mix included with Merlin's Magical London Pass

5 attraction pass

If you buy the 5-attraction pass off peak (or any time through a third party) for the off-peak rate of £100 per person, you could save as much as 51% on the walk up price for the most expensive attractions, compared with walk-up prices.

Taking the £100 price as an example, essentially you get each of the five attractions for £20 per attraction per person.

Note: Off-peak refers to bookings outside weekends and school holidays.

2 attraction pass

Visiting in off-peak periods - savings.

Madame Tussauds is currently up to £42 for a standard adult walk up price (cheaper prices are available online and during off-peak times). The London Eye is currently £42 walk-up price.

If you book London Eye + Madame Tussauds with the 2 attraction off-peak pass costing £50 in 2024, you'll save up to £34 or 46% per adult against walk-up prices for the two attractions.

Visiting in peak times - savings

Passes cost around £10 more per person for weekends and in school holidays. Using Madame Tussauds and the London Eye again as an example, if you buy a peak Merlin £60 pass for two attractions you will  save you £24 or 35% against walk-up prices for the two attractions.

Savings on Big City Saver Pass against online prices 2024

Savings using the pass against cheaper online prices will obviously be less.

Off-peak savings:

As a rough guide, using London Eye and Madame Tussauds again as an example, you can expect to save around £13 per person if you book off-peak. (Cheapest online off-peak London Eye = £30 pp, cheapest online off-peak Madame Tussauds = £33 pp, together costing £63. (Against £50 for the off-peak pass).

Peak savings:

London Eye and Madame Tussauds: expect to save around £10 per person if you book peak. (Cheapest online peak London Eye = £33 pp, cheapest online peak Madame Tussauds = £37 pp, together costing £70. (Against £60 for the peak pass).

Third party websites

If you book with a third party seller (such as Golden Tours - see banner above) prices are generally the higher price for both weekdays and weekends.

You will also find this same offer on other third party websites such as VisitBritain.

Thames River Cruise

The Thames River Cruise option with Big Bus is only available through the Big Bus website. So if this is important to you you will need to book through them directly.

Note: the Big Bus bus tour with add on Merlin attraction through the Big City Saver website only offers bus only (no river cruise). However it is good value as prices are the same for two attractions + hop-on bus tour as they are for one + hop-on bus tour on the Big Bus website (but you don't get the river cruise).

Adult from £165 for 5 attractions + 24-hr hop-on bus. Child (age 5-15) £140

What else do I need to know about the Big City Saver pass?

Shrek's Adventure! - with Merlin's Magical London Pass

When ordering your 90 day pass you choose the date of your first attraction visit - this can be anything up to 31st December in the same calendar year. This first visit kick starts your 90 day validity period.

Note : there are no refunds or exchanges offered on these heavily discounted tickets, though you can  reschedule your tickets for free  if your plans change within 90 days.

Pre-booking is essential to guarantee entry to all attractions. When you purchase your pass, all you need to do is to book your visit date and time for one attraction (known as the lead attraction). Once you have completed your purchase, you will receive instructions on how to book your visit to the remaining attractions with the online booking portal.

Length of time needed

For all five attractions you will need between thirty minutes (London Eye, excluding queuing time) and two hours.

Note: these are not all day attractions. For example, London Dungeon is one of the longer attractions but at 110 minutes to go around, you are still done in just under two hours, Madame Tussauds in around two hours, but you could spend longer if you wished.

The London Eye River Cruise will take you around 40 minutes while the Big Bus tour offers three different routes, three hours to complete all three without getting off.

What about the Merlin Annual Pass - is this better value for money?

Savings on all these passes are generous; between 20-47%, and worth the money if this suits your purposes.

UK residents might really want to consider the Merlin Annual Pass which on sale prices can cost you not much more than £400 for a family of four, but is a pass lasting a whole calendar year and unlike this combination deal, allows you to re-visit the same attractions again and again.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019
  • IrishCueTravel 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles SLO Motion Not all their fault , but if you plan on trying this Attraction be patient! Traffic is a big problem first and foremost. But to add additional unnecessary delays; the bus stops at each site for 15 minutes at a time or More ! I gave up half way through ( 45 minutes) ; and walked back to the starting point in 10 minutes! • michael g 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst hop on/hop off EVER Waited for 40 minutes in the cold rain for a bus that never came... unacceptable. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018
  • Monismith2014 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles it was very enjoyable it was very interesting seeing things we saw walking around from the bus. so much more to see. we had a lot better view of the attractions from the height of the bus.also the bus was reasonable slow which gave us time enough for photos. it stopped at sparrow hill for 10 minutes for picture taking Read more Written September 20, 2018
  • fati666222 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to see Moscow We did both routes but if you have little time then only do the red route. Its very informative and it takes you to the important sights. The staff on the bus are very friendly and helpful. Read more Written August 20, 2018
  • adolfo17 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles The worst hope-on hope-off service I've ever seen Diffiult to understand the route maps and stops. Staff wouldn't help either. Lengthy stops. No air conditioning. Read more Written August 4, 2018
  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the GetYourGuide.com web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
