What a day. Micheal was super with all the local knowledge and there isn’t much he didn’t know about the wildlife in show. From Humpbacks to Dolphins. He knew them all and saw them long before any of us. Will defo be back.
It was absolutely amazing!! Mícheál is expirenced and we felt all safe with him. His knowledge is huge. It was one of our highlights in Ireland and a must do when you’re around Cork! The two hours rushed by so quickly. It’s stunning. Mícheàl did a very good job. I would go again and my friends as well.

Self-Drive Boat Tours
A fun outdoor activity in west cork.
Join us for a 1hr boat tour in your self-drive boat on Bantry Bay and experience part of the Wild Atlantic Way from a totally different perspective. You will enjoy the breath-taking scenery and natural birdlife or wildlife that we encounter as we navigate around the bay – it’s not uncommon to spot dolphin and seals on our boat trips!
You will self-drive your easy to use boat in a follow-the-leader style tour and explore the majestic Wild Atlantic Way from the water, a truly unique experience.
Let everyone take turns at being the 'Captain' for the day and steer the boat, a firm favourite with children as a parent sits right beside them at the wheel.
All boat trips are led by a qualified guide in a separate safety boat, so you never have to worry about going in the wrong direction. We will navigate you around the bay, showing you points of interest, giving a brief history about the area while you soak up the atmosphere of beautiful Bantry Bay and the stunning scenery all around you.
Additional Tour Information
Our self-drive boat tour is 1hrs in duration and it departs from The Railway Pier, just a short walk from Bantry town centre.
All guests will be supplied with a lifejacket and given a full safety briefing on the use of the self-drive boat before we depart from the pontoon.
The boats are easy to use and drive, no experience is necessary. Each boat has a key switch, a steering wheel and they have a safety pull-cord which is worn by the ‘Captain’ at all times. The maximum speed is 15km/h, which is like going for a run, so there’s minimum risk of going too fast and getting out of control. Your guide will be near you at all times.
A maximum of 4 adults per boat or 2 adults with 3 children. If you have additional children on your trip, give us a call to discuss your requirements. If you are travelling as part of a large group, talk to us about organising a private departure.
Of course all boat tours are weather/sea conditions permitting but it will be confirmed to all guests on the morning of the expected day of departure. Please ensure you submit your travelling contact details when booking.

Welcome to Bantry Bay charters
Launched in 2020, Bantry Bay Charters is owned and run by Brian and Sharon O’Rourke.
Bantry Bay Charters is owned and run by Brian and Sharon O’Rourke. Launched in 2020, during very uncertain times, we had a dream of offering top quality boat tours on Bantry Bay, to families, groups, couples, and individuals.
That dream has certainly come true. With over 30 years of seafaring experience and world travel under his belt, Brian knew exactly the type of service he wanted to offer. First and foremost Fun (or good ol’ Irish craic) , informative, environmentally sound and always going the extra mile!
With a fantastic team onboard, we created trips that both enlighten and entertain.
We started in 2020 with one boat operating from Glengarriff and two years on, we operate three boats from Glengarriff and Bantry. We have met the most amazing people along the way and we hope that we have helped create lifelong memories for people. Our aim is to make your West Cork boat tour, not only the highlight of your holiday, but to make it to your ‘must do’ list for your next trip on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Thanks to the support of Failte Ireland, we have a fabulous new website with an online booking system, but don’t forget, Sharon is always at the end of the phone to assist in planning your trip, whether you are looking for things to do on a rainy day with kids in Bantry or you want ideas for a family reunion, a great day out with friends, ideas for a romantic evening, or you simply want to go on a fishing trip in West Cork.
We look forward to welcoming you aboard!

What people are saying about our boat tours.
“Absolutely brilliant. Ireland’s waters are extremely rich in life and the displays here are top-notch. I learned a *lot*. Thanks to very helpful staff member Laura, I learned that the lumpsuckers – beautiful fish — need to be “burped” occasionally, in their tank! The variety of wrasses was amazing, as were the anglerfish and the seahorse. I plan to dive on Monday if the weather cooperates, but I am sure I saw more here than I will in the wild!”
Robert M. Corless – June 2022
“Amazing day out! Best boat tour we have ever done! Skipper Brian gave us the best experience possible, with his depth of local knowledge, passion for the area and hugely entertaining personality. We learned about the local wildlife, fished for mackerel, and he even cooked us up a tasty pot of mussels!”
Trip Advisor
“We had the most incredible, memorable family trip out on the Bay with Darren & Bantry Charters, we relaxed in the sun on the boat & got a totaly different perspective of the scenery of the Bay, Bantry & Whiddy, caught fresh pollack for our dinner & got to see 2 whales, amazing! Would highly recommend & will definitely plan a return trip!”
Claire Hayden – Facebook Review
“Absolutely top class we loved it. Niall and Luke really looked after us we did a three hour tour which included the best Dolphin watching we have ever done and we also caught some fish. Made the kids at ease straight away and it was just lots and lots of fun. 5 stars all the way.”
Dan Stenson – Google Review
“Could not say enough about what an amazing day we had, we celebrated my sons birthday and the kids caught, cooked and ate their own fish. Darren and crew are unreal from the sights , the fishing, everything. An amazing day Thanks all”
Gillian Morris – Facebook
“I booked the wildlife tour, Sea angling, and the sunset cruise for my family. We had the absolute best time with BB Charters. Darren and Brian were excellent guides and great with our 2 children. We learned a lot about the history of the area as well as the sea life. Sharon was brilliant advising us what to bring to make sure we were prepared for all of our trips. We will definitely be back next year. Thank you Bantry Bay Charters!”

Welcome to Cork’s Bull Rock: Home To ‘the Gateway to the Underworld’
By Author Keith O'Hara
Posted on Last updated: December 29, 2023
There’s a little island (Bull Rock) off the coast of Cork that looks like a set from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie…
To be completely honest: I’d never heard about Bull Rock up until last year. I was sat in a cafe in a little town called Castletown-Bearhaven on the Beara Peninsula in Cork.
It was the tail-end of summer… and it was lashing down outside. The original plan for the day was to join an organised walking tour, but the guide rang that morning to say that it was cancelled.
When the chap in the cafe dropped down my coffee, we got to chatting about the area and what there was to do that was a little off the beaten path.
That’s when he mentioned what he described as ‘the most unusual of the many things to do in Cork ‘. He was, of course, talking about Bull Rock.
Table of Contents
Some quick need-to-knows about Bull Rock in Cork
Although Bull Rock is one of the more off-the-beaten-path places to visit in West Cork , a visit here is pretty straightforward.
Below, you’ll find info on its location, how to get to Bull Rock and what there is to see and do nearby.
1. Location
The chances are you’ll have heard of Cork’s Dursey Island (yep, it’s the one that’s accessible via a cable car).
Dursey is situated at the southwestern tip of the beautiful Beara Peninsula and it’s off the western point of Dursey that you’ll find Bull Rock Island.
2. How to get there
There are two different Bull Rock tour providers: Dursey Boat Trips and Skellig Coast Discovery. You’ll find info on both below, from where they leave from to how much the tours cost.
3. What to see
Now, although you can’t get onto the island itself, you’ll get to have a spin around it on the different tours and you’ll also go through the hole in the centre. You’ll also see Bull Rock Lighthouse and discover the story behind the mysterious little island.
About Cork’s Bull Rock: ‘The Entrance to the Underworld’
You’ll find Bull Rock Island off the southwestern tip of the beautiful Beara Peninsula in the even more beautiful region of West Cork.
Off the western point of Dursey lies three rocks (one of which looks like a set whipped straight from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie):
Like something from another world
I’ve done a fair whack of travelling around Ireland over the past 10 years, but I’ve never seen anything like this place.
From the moment that I first laid eyes on Bull Rock, I thought that it looked like a deserted island that you’d find tucked away somewhere in the Indian Ocean.
The type of place that pirates would have used back in the day to stash their swag.
What you’ll see if you visit Bull Island in Cork
If you take one of the Bull Rock Tours (info on these in a minute), you’ll be treated to a very unique experience.
The island, which is roughly 93m high and 228m by 164m wide, is arguably one of the more overlooked places to visit on the Wild Atlantic Way , and a visit here packs a punch. Here’s what to expect.
The passageway through the rock
As you can see from the photos above and below, there’s a narrow passageway that cuts through the island.
You’ll see this referred to as ‘the Entrance to the Underworld’ on social media and on places like Reddit and Tripadvisor.
I’ve done a bit of digging, but I can’t find any more info on the background to the name. It’s not hard to see where the name came from, though – take a look at it up close and you’ll see why!
On the Bull Rock Tours, you’re take through the dark tunnel that runs beneath the island, right the way through to the other-side.
The Bull Rock Lighthouse
The original Bull Rock Lighthouse was built by Henry Grissell of Regent’s Canal Iron Works in London, after he won the contract in 1861.
He completed construction of the lighthouse in 1864. However, just 17 years later, in 1881, the Islands’ lighthouse was destroyed by a storm.
Thankfully, the lighthouse keepers weren’t in the tower at the time. It wasn’t until 1888 that a new lighthouse was completed and it wasn’t until 1st of January, 1889, that the light on the island started up again.
Bull Rock Lighthouse operated successfully for many years after. The, in early 1991, it was fully automated and the Keepers were withdrawn.
Bull Rock boat tours
Photo taken by Deirdre Fitzgerald
Since writing a guide to Bull Rock in Cork 4 years or so ago, we’ve received an awful lot of emails asking about tours of the island.
Below, you’ll find info on two Bull Rock Tours (one from Cork and another from Kerry). Note: prices, times and tours may change , so check with the provider in advance.
1. Dursey Boat Trips
If you’re in/visiting Cork, Dursey Boat Trips are the go-to for getting to Bull Island. On the tour, you’ll spin around Dursey Island, Calf Rock, Elephant Rock and, of course, Bull Rock.
Here are some need-to-knows about this Bull Rock Tour (note: tours are weather dependent):
- Where they leave from : leave from Garnish Pier in Cork
- Tour length : 1.5 hours
- Cost : €60 per person
- When they leave : Several times per day during the summer months
2. Skellig Coast Discovery
The second tour leaves from Caherdaniel in Kerry. On this tour, you’ll soak up the scenery around Derrynane , experience a good chunk of the glorious coastline that makes the Ring of Beara one of the best road trip routes in the world and take a spin around Bull Rock.
- Where they leave from : Caherdaniel in Kerry
- Tour length : 2.5 hours
- Cost : Adult: €50, Child (2-14): €40 and private tour: €550
FAQs about visiting Bull Rock lighthouse
We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from can you climb up to Bull Rock Lighthouse (you can’t) to what tours are available.
In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.
Can you visit Bull Rock Island in Cork?
So, while you can’t set foot on the island itself, you can take one of the Bull Rock boat tours from either Garnish Pier or Caherdaniel.
Where is Cork’s Bull Rock?
You’ll find Bull Rock just off Dursey Island, off the southwestern tip of the Beara Peninsula.
What Bull Rock tours are available?
There are two Bull Rock tours on offer: one leaves from Garnish Pier in Cork and the other leaves from Caherdaniel in Kerry. Info on both above!
