When you're thinking of essentials for your little one, you probably already have a cosy cot picked out, but what about a travel cot if you love travelling? In addition to packing your baby's travel system and gathering all the necessities before heading off on holiday with your family, a travel cot will help your little one to sleep as soundly as possible, even when you're away from home.

You probably did a lot of research on the best cot and bedside crib for your baby but may not have considered investing in a travel cot yet. Put simply, a travel cot is a portable, lightweight option designed to fold away compactly. Its collapsible sides and storage bag are some of the features that make it the perfect solution for trips away. Like a travel stroller , it's another one of those holiday essentials that you'll want to invest in when travelling with children under 5 years old.

You most likely won't need a travel cot for the first few months, especially if you already have a Moses basket , a portable crib or a carrycot suitable for overnight sleeping. If you don't go away very often, then you might be better off borrowing a cot from a friend, as it can be an expensive purchase if you're only going to be using it once a year.

A lot of hotels and holiday cottages may provide travel cots and other baby equipment, so check with them before you travel. If you are away from home often, then a travel cot is a good purchase, as it will last well past the newborn months and will prove extremely useful at other times, too. For example, for your baby's daytime naps when you're visiting friends or staying over with grandparents overnight. We've enlisted the help of expert mum testers to put the best travel cots through their paces, taking into account the weight, size, price, assembly, age suitability and stability. Our annual  Mother&Baby Awards  also help us bring you the best advice about current products on the market.

Travel cots – All you need to know:

Choosing the right travel cot for you and your child.

Think about where and when you'll use a travel cot. If you are throwing it in the car boot when you're going to Granny's, check how bulky it is when folded and make sure it fits along with your pushchair and still leaves enough room for your luggage. If you're buying for your holiday and you'll be travelling to your destination by plane, boat or other public transport, choose one that folds very compactly to make it easier to pack. Consider, too, where you'll keep it at home when it's not in use.

Unpacking your travel cot after a long journey with a tired baby can be stressful, so choose something quick and easy to set up. Some travel cots can be assembled and folded with one hand, which is a lifesaver if you're holding your baby.

Some travel cots are designed to double as playpens , creating somewhere safe for your baby to play when she's awake. This is useful when you're away from home, especially if you're staying somewhere that's less baby-friendly, without any baby-proofing products , than your normal environment. This type of travel cot has added value as you can get more use out of it than a standard travel cot but check the manufacturer's guidelines before you buy to ensure it's safe to use as a playpen.

Features to consider before purchasing a travel cot

Here are some travel cot features to look out for when deciding on which travel cot is best for you and your baby.

Travel cots come with a mattress supplied, but some are comfier than others. Check how thick it is and whether it provides enough support for a good night's sleep. If not, thicker travel cot mattresses can be purchased separately – but that's an extra expense and something else to pack!

Fold mechanism

As well as checking how simple it is to assemble the travel cot, make sure you can fold it away again easily. Could you do it in a hurry if you're dashing to the airport? If you have older children, make sure inquisitive little fingers can't access the mechanism for folding the travel cot when it's in use.

Most travel cots have mesh sides to encourage airflow and enable you to see your baby easily when they're sleeping. Check the quality of the fabric and how easy it is to wipe clean.

If you want to move the cot elsewhere in the house for daytime naps or playpen use, choose one with wheels for easy manoeuvrability.

Standard cot bedding may not fit your travel cot, so check what size bedding is required and factor in any extra expense. Make sure the bedding fits the mattress securely with no loose fabric.

Choose a travel cot with side panels that zip open and closed if you'd like to be able to reach your baby without bending low over the side of the cot. If it doubles as a playpen, a 'window' to crawl through can add to the fun.

If you plan to travel with your baby to a climate where mosquitoes might bother them, choose a travel cot with an insect net, and check it fits the travel cot securely.

What age are travel cots advised for?

Travel cots come in a variety of sizes and styles, and they all have different upper age and/or weight limits. Consider how old your child will be when using the travel cot, and choose one suitable for their age. Most of the travel cots in our list above can be used from birth until your baby weighs 15kg, which is approximately three years old. Keep in mind that once your baby makes the transition from sleeping in a cot to a bed, they'll probably prefer a bed to a travel cot when away from home overnight.

Can I travel on a plane with a travel cot?

Yes! Although all airlines will have their own rules on luggage allowances, but if you are flying with a baby then typically parents of infants are allowed to take at least two items - e.g. travel cot, buggy or car seat - at no extra cost.

If you're buying a travel cot to take on holiday and are travelling by plane, boat or train, choose one that folds as compactly as possible to make it easier to transport. If you're driving, make sure it fits in your car boot and still leaves enough room for the rest of your luggage.

Think about where you'll keep the travel cot when it's not in use, too. If space is not an issue, you could look into the larger options available.

All travel cots are designed to be light enough to carry, but some are heavier than others, and there's generally a pay-off between how light it is and how durable it is.

If you'll be carrying it a lot on your journey, such as through an airport, then weight may take priority, but if you've got a cruising toddler, and throwing the cot in a big boot is about the extent of your lugging it around, then a sturdier, perhaps heavier, cot would be better.

How to assemble a travel cot

Wrestling with an unwieldy travel cot and a tired baby after a long journey is stress you really don't need in your life, so choose one that doesn't require an engineering degree to set up. While how to put up a travel cot differs depending on the brand, some can be assembled and folded away within seconds, even with one hand– and that's a really helpful feature if you're going to be assembling it with your baby or other children in tow.

Where can I buy a travel cot?

Whether you need one pronto or want to spend your time researching the perfect travel cot, there are plenty of places where you can pick one. We'd recommend these trusted retailers that offer great products and plenty of reviews so you can make sure you're buying the right one for your little one:

John Le wis

Mamas & Papas

Supermarkets also hold baby events where you can often pick up travel cots and other accessories for a great price. These include:

Can I buy a travel cot second-hand?

If you're looking to buy a second-hand travel cot, there are a few things to check before you make your purchase:

• Check that it assembles and folds down correctly

• Make sure it's sturdy

• Make sure the seller provides you with the original instruction booklet

It's also worth purchasing a new mattress for the travel cot

How to clean your travel cot

If your travel cot has been tucked away in the loft for a few years and it smells a bit musty, or your child has turned it into a bit of a mess, a good tip for cleaning is to use warm soapy water and a sponge.

Make sure to leave it out in the fresh air and sunlight to dry.

Travel cot safety

There are a number of safety aspects to check on your travel cot for your peace of mind.

Stability: Be sure to use the mattress that comes with the cot, as changing it could affect the stability of the cot and could make it easier to tip.

Escaping: Swapping for a thicker mattress could give your tot more height and make it easier for them to escape.

Corners: Be wary of how smooth corners are - make sure there is no chance of your baby's clothes getting caught on them to avoid any chance of strangulation.

Flexible sides: Pop-up-style tents may be easy to erect and dismantle; however, the flexible sides mean that if you were to stumble onto the cot, there would be no ridged sides to stop your fall.

Zips: Make sure you check all zips are secure, as any loose zips that become unattached could potentially become choking hazards.

Wheels: The wheels must be able to securely lock into place or have two wheels and two legs for sturdiness.

Test it out: Make sure you try it out before you travel to check all of the above safety aspects.

Safe sleeping in a travel cot

The general consensus is that you need to be following the same sleeping guidance for your baby in a travel cot as you would at home.

Here's what The Lullaby Trust have to say:

"The same 'safer sleep' rules apply to a travel cot, which should have a rigid frame and base, and a firm, flat mattress, covered in a waterproof material. Travel cot mattresses are often thinner and feel harder than those in a permanent cot, but don't be tempted to place folded blankets or a quilt under the baby to make them 'more comfortable'. If you are very tight for space, you may have to consider re-arranging the furniture in the room to ensure that the travel cot isn't against a radiator, in direct sunlight, and is out of reach of blind cords and hazards."

Travel cots need to know

Just a few important things to consider before buying a travel cost:

Check your child's age and weight suitability for the travel cot, as this varies from model to model.

The weight and size when it’s folded is also important, especially if you are going to be lugging it around a lot or taking it on a plane. Consider the case it comes in, too – will it stand up to being chucked into the boot of the car or the hold of a plane, and will it protect the cot within it? Is it easy to fold away and to put up?

Is it stable enough to cope with your little one leaning against the sides? And will it need an extra mattress for your little cherub to be truly comfy?

Chicco Zip and Go Travel Cot

1. CHICCO ZIP AND GO TRAVEL CRIB

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The perfect option for parents with newborns who find that travel cots can often seem too large and not all that cosy, the Chicco Zip and Go has an expandable section, allowing it to act as a small crib from birth to six months and a larger baby bed from six to 18 months. It’s super compact and relatively lightweight, making it the ideal travel companion.

Cuggl Duluxe Travel Cot

2. CUGGL DELUXE TRAVEL COT AND CHANGER UNIT

This travel cot is a great all rounder that easily converts from cot to playpen. It has a bassinet level that is perfect for younger babies, as well as a removable cot top changer. It’s set on lockable wheels so can be manoeuvred easily and folding it away is relatively straight forward.

BabyHub SleepSpace Travel Cot

3. BABYHUB SLEEPSPACE TRAVEL COT

If you are planning on travelling to warmer climes, the BabyHub SleepSpace is a great multi-functional bit of kit. It ticks all the right boxes in terms of being lightweight and easy to work but it also features a fitted mosquito net and doubles as a tipi for toddlers to play in.

Tutti Bambini CoZee bedside crib

4. TUTTI BAMBINI COZEE BEDSIDE CRIB

While most travel cots are designed purely from a practical point of view, the Tutti Bambini CoZee crib also looks incredibly chic and could seamlessly fit in as a piece of permanent nursery furniture. It comes with a deluxe foam mattress and features a handy shelf for storage while travelling.

BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light

5. BABYBJORN TRAVEL COT LIGHT

Incredibly lightweight and compact when folded, this cot is especially easy for using when travelling. Other advantages include a washable cover and high comfort mattress, plus it’s really easy to set up in just one simple movement (not a loose part in sight).

RED KITE SLEEPTIGHT TRAVEL COT

6. RED KITE SLEEPTIGHT TRAVEL COT

If you are buying a travel cot on a budget then the Red Kite Sleeptight travel cot is a clear winner. It’s compact once folded down and fits easily into the travel bag it comes with and, even though you might want to buy a comfier mattress, it’s still great value for money.

Best travel cots 2023: Comfortable cribs for babies and toddlers

  • Catherine Hufton
  • Chris Martin

travel cot with zip side

Travelling with your baby? Ensure everyone enjoys a good night’s sleep with the best travel cots

If you’ve recently had a baby, then the thrilling thought of travelling anywhere, let alone abroad, is precisely why you began your search for the best travel cot. Buy the right one, and you’ll be journeying once more, on UK holidays or overseas, visiting relatives overnight, or dropping off your baby to a friend while you and your partner enjoy a much-needed date night. For all those scenarios, a good-quality travel cot guarantees that your baby gets a comfortable night’s sleep.

Investing in a good-quality travel cot needn’t cost a fortune, however. How much you spend will depend on your requirements: do you need an all-singing, all-dancing cot; or a simple pop-up model that’s easy to use?

These days, many hotels and holiday homes supply cots; but buying your own means you can be confident in its quality, and your baby will be comfortable and relaxed in their own familiar cot, even when they’re in new surroundings.

You’ll find our top picks in the At a glance list below followed by a handy explanation of all the key features to look out for in our buying guide. If you want a little more information before buying, then you’ll find a wider selection of bite-size reviews a little further down the page.

Best travel cot: At a glance

  • Best lightweight travel cot: Silver Cross Slumber | £165

How to choose the best travel cot for your child

There are some key questions to consider when buying a travel cot. Obviously, it needs to be appropriate for the age and size of your child, but you’ll also want to take note of how portable it is, how quickly it can be assembled – and how much you want to spend.

Are travel cots suitable for newborns?

Most travel cots will be just fine for newborn infants, but you may prefer to get a smaller bassinet that’s specifically designed for young babies. This is because it’s easier to put down a baby in a higher bassinet – babies develop what’s known as the Moro reflex, which causes their arms to jump if they think they’re being dropped; this could be felt if placing them lower down into a travel cot. In addition, a bassinet feels more enclosed and cosy.

You can also now pick up bedside cribs that can double up as travel cots. As you’d imagine, these will be more expensive, but it does mean you’re buying just one item rather than two.

Can a travel cot double as a playpen?

Indeed. Spending a little more on a travel cot that doubles as a playpen will increase its use, delivering value for money. Look for models that have four, rather than two, mesh sides to give you and your baby a better view. A travel cot can also function as somewhere safe to put your crawling, or walking, whirlwind while you grab a snack or go to the loo.

What else do I need to consider?

Make sure you have all the necessary accoutrements. All the travel cots on our list are supplied with a mattress, but sheets aren’t included. You could use a pillowcase, but you may prefer a fitted sheet, and this may be available as an optional extra.

How we test travel cots

At Expert Reviews, we know that not all products are created equal, nor can they be judged on price and brand alone. This is the reason we test every product we recommend, so we can get first-hand experience of how it performs in real life. To put together this roundup of the best travel cots, each model has been assembled by the reviews, and out through its paces with their own children. As well as considering the age and size of child for which each cot is suitable, we consider how portable it is, how quickly and easily it can be assembled, and how much it costs. We also judge the comfort of each mattress by considering how well a child has slept on them, along with the overall design. At the end of each review, you’ll find a quick-view set of details including the age range for which a cot is suitable, its weight, assembly time and cleaning instructions.

The best travel cots you can buy in 2023

1. bugaboo stardust: best travel cot for comfort and convenience.

travel cot with zip side

Renowned, and highly regarded, for its range of car seats and stylish strollers (you can read more about these in our best pushchair guide ), Bugaboo recently branched out with its first travel cot: the Bugaboo Stardust. It’s pricey, just like the rest of the Bugaboo range, but that’s the only negative. It tops our list of the best travel cots because it combines style, function, and comfort in ways we haven’t seen before.

First – and this is a gamechanger – it “pops” open, in the same way that a pop-up tent would, and similarly folds down in seconds at the touch of a button. It can also be folded and unfolded without removing the mattress, and the buttons are sensibly and safely positioned out of reach of your child.

While many travel cots either come without a mattress or ship with a thin, uncomfortable bit of material, the Bugaboo Stardust comes with a built-in, multi-layered mattress that’s lightweight and comfortable. It can be raised via a zip-in bed insert, and this transforms the cot into a bassinet that’s perfect for newborns or younger babies.

The pop-up design means that there’s no fiddly assembly required. There are no special techniques to master, nor do you have to rely on separate sections all clipping and locking into place. It folds down into one piece that’s carried in a Velcro-closing bag that’s also included in the box.

Factor in all of its features, and the included extras, and the £225 price doesn’t seem quite so extortionate. In fact, we don’t think you can really put a price on just how easy and quick the Stardust is to use.

Key features – Age range: 0-24 months; Weight: 6.7kg; Cleaning: Hand-washable fabric; Time to assemble: 1 second

2. Silver Cross Slumber: Best lightweight travel cot

Price when reviewed: £165 | Check price at Silver Cross

best travel cot - silver slumber cot

Silver Cross’s Slumber travel cot is contemporary and lightweight, with a pop-up design that can be assembled in seconds. It now comes with the newborn insert that sits at bed height and can be used with or without. This cot looks great, so we had no issue having it out in our living room for downstairs naps through a period of some noisy building work being carried out. Plus, it also doubles up as a great playpen, featuring a padded top rail and zip-down side.

Let’s be honest, babies don’t always sleep particularly well in travel cots, but we were pleasantly surprised during testing, as baby enjoyed a restful couple of nights on a recent trip to the grandparents. The Silver Cross Slumber is lightweight, too, so would be ideal for taking on holiday to create somewhere safe for baby to play in a villa or hotel room.

Key features – Age: 0-3 years; Weight: 7.7kg; Cleaning: Sponge clean; Time to assemble: 5 minutes

Check price at Silver Cross

3. Tutti Bambini CoZee: Best travel cot for style

travel cot with zip side

The Cozee Luxe is the latest update on Tutti Bambini’s Cozee bedside crib . Slightly bigger, it comes with more premium finishings than the original. It’s beautifully made, featuring soft quilted sides, a cotton lining, and sheer mesh sides that will keep baby visible at all times. It also has gold-tone-tipped walnut legs that add to its luxury finish.

The side can be easily zipped down so you can lift baby in and out of the bed for feeds during the night, or zipped up during nap times. The lining can also be removed and washed in the machine, which is always handy with a newborn baby.

Assembly proved quick and easy: it probably took us no more time than the 60 seconds suggested by the brand. This feels like a quality cot that we would be more than happy to have as a permanent by-the-side bed; it doesn’t feel at all flimsy in the way some travel cots do. If your baby regularly stay at the grandparents or a friend’s house, this would be a lovely option to keep out permanently.

Key features  – Age range: 0-6 months; Weight: 11.4kg; Cleaning: Inner lining and mattress cover are machine washable; Time to assemble: 60 seconds

4. nuna sena aire: best travel cot/playpen hybrid.

best travel cot Nuna Sena Aire

Nuna’s solution is more expensive and heavier, but comes with plenty of great features and more spacious dimensions of 103 x 76 x 73cm (LWH) – which means there’s more room to sleep and play.

The zigzag leg-folding design is super easy to use; folding it up is particularly satisfying, requiring a simple lifting of the strap in the centre of the cot. Like magic, it folds up into a very compact size, although you do have to wrap the mattress around the outside before putting it all in the carry bag.

The stylish cot is available in two colours, Charcoal (pictured) or Frost, and features an “Advanced air design”, including mesh sides to ensure airflow is optimal and safe. It’s sturdier than most, with skid-proof feet and padded edges.

Suitable from birth, the raised bassinet mode is super useful and can be quickly unzipped when you want to move the mattress to a lower position. The mattress itself sports a triple-layered mesh design and the internal boards are removable, so that the cover can be machine-washed and dried.

Key details – Age range: Birth to 15kg; Weight: 12.3kg; Cleaning: Spot-clean, air-dry mattress cover is both washing machine and dryer safe; Time to assemble: 1 second fold/unfold

5. Joie Excursion: Best travel cot for value for money

travel cot with zip side

It isn’t the most compact, lightweight or easy to put together model in this list, but the Joie Excursion Change & Bounce gets a special shout-out for offering great value for money. In addition to the sturdy, well-built travel cot itself, this good-looking setup comes with a full-size bassinet (that clips on and off easily), a changing table and a bouncer, all included in the price. What’s more, the bouncer can be used either on top of the cot or standalone, as can the changing mat.

As with all of Joie’s baby products, the Excursion Change & Bounce is highly practical. Although a little fiddly to set up and use, once you’ve mastered it, you’ll wonder how you ever did without the added extras. The travel cot itself sports an ultra-secure frame with exposed tubing, plus two built-in wheels to help you easily move it around a room. A mesh lining on all four sides means the Change & Bounce can double up as a playpen, plus it has an elevated, draught-resistant base, and comes with a carry bag for storage.

On the side of the cot is a sound and light attachment that vibrates. It plays five classical lullabies and five nature sounds, plus there’s a nightlight that offers three brightness settings. The bouncer adds a toy bar with two soft toys and a five-point harness. We’ve found ourselves using the BabyBjörn for the odd night away and this fantastic travel cot for longer holidays.

Key features –   Age range: 0-4 years; Weight: 16.49kg; Cleaning: Hand-washable fabric; Time to assemble: 5 minutes

6. BabyBjörn Travel Cot: Best luxury travel cot

best travel cot babybjorn light

BabyBjörn gear isn’t cheap, and the fitted organic sheet adds an extra £20 to this already pricey travel cot. But if you’re willing to pay, it won’t disappoint. The travel cot takes mere seconds to assemble: the legs drop and lock as you open it, after which the mattress drops in.

The mattress is thick and soft, it’s fully washable and it looks good, too. Available in two colours, the mesh sides ensure good ventilation for baby and all-round visibility for parents. We bought this travel cot on the premise that once our little one started roaming around, it would make a safe playpen for him, too. The angle of the legs deliver good stability, even if your toddler leans on the travel cot’s sides as he grows.

One slight downside is the length of the drop when placing your baby into the cot at bedtime. It isn’t a huge problem, but note that this travel cot doesn’t come with a bassinet attachment – so, if you’re short, placing a 10kg child down into it can prove tricky. This isn’t a reason not to buy this travel cot, just something to consider.

Key features – Age: 0-3 years; Weight: 6kg; Cleaning: Machine-washable fabric; Time to assemble: 15 seconds

7. Red Kite Sleeptight Travel Cot: Best budget travel cot

travel cot with zip side

This may not be the lightest or most attractive travel cot here, but it does the job for a fraction of the cost of other models. It does come with its own mattress, although some parents may prefer to buy an additional mattress (around £20) since the one included is quite thin. Setting the cot up and packing it away again can be a bit of a challenge – make sure you follow the instructions carefully – but the sturdy, steel-framed design is reassuringly stable once erected.

There are no bells and whistles here; just the cot, a mattress and a bag. You’ll need to pick up a sheet for the mattress, too, which is available to buy for around £13. If you’re not someone who will be travelling too often with baby, or are on a tight budget, this cot will serve its purpose.

Key features – Age: 0-3 years; Weight: 8.5kg; Cleaning: Sponge clean; Time to assemble: 1 minute

What is a travel cot?

A travel cot is a collapsible cot that can be folded down, stored in a bag and taken on holiday or packed in the car. Most travel cots have a plastic or metal frame and mesh sides, and come with a lightly padded mattress. Some have wheels or castors. A travel cot can also double as a playpen.

A travel cot can be an essential bit of kit if you plan on travelling with your baby or toddler or you make regular trips to cot-free homes.

travel cot with zip side

How long do you plan to use it?

The length of time you intend to use your travel cot for will help determine which one you buy. Different travel cots are suitable for specific age ranges and using them outside of the guidelines is not safe.

If you want an option to use from birth, your newborn can sleep overnight in a travel bassinette but these are only suitable for the first few months, as they are quickly outgrown. Some buggy carrycots are approved for overnight sleeping and may even have a stand you can purchase so you can use the carrycot like a Moses basket, such as the Mamas & Papas Mylo . However, you may need to buy another mattress , approved for overnight sleeping, so make sure you double check the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Most standard travel cots can be used with a newborn baby and are even more comfy if the cot is supplied with a bassinette insert. This allows the mattress to hang in the cot at waist height, rather than sit on the base of the cot. A bassinette insert is suitable from birth to around 3 months.

More like this

If you’re after an option to use for your older baby or toddler, you’ll need to check out the size of the cots you’re interested in. Travel cots differ widely in size. Some of the most compact cots are light to carry and easy to store but for this reason will only last from around 3 months to 18 months. Others are bigger and you can use them from 3 months or 6 months up to 3 years or even 5 years of age, as with the Bushbaby Nestegg Pop-up Travel Cot . However, most pop-up cots, such as the Samsonite Pop-up Bubble Cot , are a great option for camping but they usually only last from 6 to around 18 months due to their size.

Make sure you check the manufacturers guidelines before buying and try before you buy to make sure the travel cot is tall enough, long enough and to your liking. A basic guidelin e is, if you think your toddler could tip the cot over, stop using the cot.

Do you need to carry it?

If you travel by plane or train, it’s likely that you’ll have to carry the travel cot. Some travel cots can be really heavy (around 10kg), so look for a lightweight version (around 2.5kg). Also check how the cot folds - look for one that’s compact and has a carry handle or shoulder strap.

Some cots have wheels on the storage bag, which can make it easy to transport.

If the travel cot is going straight into the car, your only concern is the size of your boot (and how much luggage you’re taking). Ask to see the cot folded down in the shop first and check out the dimensions.

travel cot with zip side

Do you want to use it for more than sleep?

If you’re visiting a house that hasn’t been child-proofed then a bigger travel cot that doubles as a playpen would be incredibly useful.

Some travel cots also work as a changing station and have a clip-on, wipe-clean attachment that fits over the cot .

A few travel cots on the market can also be used as beach shelter, complete with UV sun sheets.

Do you need rapid set-up?

If you often arrive at your destination late at night, or you need to contain your baby straight away – think campsite or hotel room full of hazards – you’ll need to get the travel cot up quick. Ask to see the travel cot being assembled in the shop to get an idea of ease of use, or if you have a young baby look for a pop-up cot like the Samsonite Pop-up Bubble Cot , Koo-di Pop-Up Bubble Cot or the Koo-di Travel Bassinette . The last thing you need at the end of a holiday is a travel cot that you can’t fold down. To avoid the stress of trying to collapse the cot every which way possible, practice before you leave home.

travel cot with zip side

Will you need to move it?

Being able to move your travel cot easily is a real bonus, especially if you’re sharing a hotel room, or you need extra space during the day.

Some travel cots have wheels or castors, which makes them pretty portable. If the cot has four wheels, two of these should be lockable to stop the cot moving by accident. A common feature is having two wheels and two standard legs, where to move the cot you simply lift up one end and push it along.

travel cot with zip side

Do you need it to keep insects out?

If you’re holidaying in tropical climes, or where there are lots of insects, you should opt for a travel cot that can be fully enclosed. Most travel cots are designed with fabric mesh sides that will keep some bugs out but an open-topped cot doesn’t cut it if insects, and particularly mosquitoes, are a problem. Zip-up sides or a zip-up top will help you solve this problem. Buying an insect net cover is also an option.

travel cot with zip side

Do you want an easy-to-clean option?

Regular use, air travel and slinging your cot in the back of the car will probably leave it looking a little shoddy, so go for a travel cot with removable machine-washable covers, or a wipe clean fabric.

Choosing a dark colour might also be wise – cream or beige is sure to suffer at the hands of a toddler or a baggage handler.

travel cot with zip side

Do you need a mattress?

Travel cot mattresses are notoriously thin and hard, so you might want to buy your own mattress . However, remember that you'll have to carry it, too, so check how easy it is to fold or stow. All mattresses should be aired and kept clean and dry, and most travel cot mattresses are wipe-clean.

travel cot with zip side

Do you want to buy second-hand?

If you’re only going to use your travel cot a handful of times it’s worth looking at a second-hand option. But before you grab a bargain there are a few points to remember:

  • All travel cots should comply with British Standards Institution (BSI) safety standard BS EN 716:1 2008, regardless of age. If you can’t see this number on the cot then don’t buy it.
  • The seller should supply original instructions, or ask them to print them off the web (most manufacturers publish them as a PDF). Some cots have instructions printed on the base.
  • Ask for a demo and practice unfolding and folding the cot . The lock system on the pull up/push down style of cot can sometimes wear.
  • Inspect the condition of the mattress carefully. The mattress should be waterproof.
  • Check the mattress size – ask to see the mattress folded out in the cot, and folded up in the cot. There shouldn’t be any gaps around the edges. Also, the top of the mattress should be 50cm below the cot’s top rail.
  • Look over the frame for damage. If it’s a metal frame, check there are no sharp edges.
  • Make sure the carry bag is supplied – travel cots are virtually impossible to carry when not in the bag!

A Buyer’s Guide to the Best Baby Travel Cots

Purchasing a travel cot is a great way to secure your little one no matter where you’re visiting, but there’s a few different things you’ll want to keep an eye on as you shop around for the perfect fit. Your baby needs to be able to sleep and play in a secure and safe environment so make sure your cot meets all of these important requirements to be a good fit!

Flexibility and Versatility

Babies are an exciting but expensive addition to your family, so a flexible and versatile travel cot that will last you through your baby’s initial growth spurt, their changing sleep and play needs, and even a few different babies is a great choice. Look for a cot that converts from bassinet to play pen to larger sleeping pen for the best value!

Stain-Resistant yet Soft

Babies are messy, and accidents happen. A cot that can withstand quite a few accidents from your baby is a great choice. Look for a mattress pad that can be removed or washed and a polyester material that wipes down easily. A cot that can comfortably handle the outdoors, stains, sweat, rain, and more will be a versatile and functional part of your family routine, but you’ll also want to make sure it’s still soft enough that your baby can rest comfortably inside.

Travel cots for babies are a big part of ensuring your baby is comfortable sleeping and at play r while you go about your day whether you’re at home or traveling. Picking a sturdy, soft, secure, and reliable travel cot that lasts your child a long time is key to easing your transition into new parenthood and ensuring a happy and healthy sleep and play balance in your baby’s life.

TripSavvy / Jhett Thompson

A safe and comfortable travel crib is an essential accessory for parents who want to travel with their little ones without restriction. Sleepovers with friends and family, local road trips, and even international adventures—the world is your oyster with the right one. Some can be used as a permanent sleeping place for your baby or toddler, while others adapt throughout the first stages of their life from bassinet to cot or playpen. Things to consider include how long you want to use the crib, what you want it for (and, therefore, whether lightness or size is the greater priority), and how much you’re willing to spend.

To help you find the travel crib best suited to your requirements, we tested 19 of the most popular options in the TripSavvy lab. Each one was scored for ease of setup, portability, quality, durability, ease of cleaning, and overall value—giving us our overall winner, the Maxi-Cosi Swift 3-in-1 Bassinet, Travel Cot, and Playpen. This crib stood out for its attractive, high-quality design and the fact that it works from birth to approximately 3.5 years. Read on to find out which other models earned themselves a spot on our roundup of the best travel cribs currently on the market.

Best overall, maxi-cosi swift lightweight portable play yard.

  • Ease of Setup 4.8 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Beautiful, high-quality design

Incredibly easy to put up and take down

3-in-1 design suits newborns to toddlers

Not the lightest option for air travel

The Maxi-Cosi Swift was a clear winner for us due to its ingenious design that combines three baby essentials—bassinet, cot, and playpen—in one high-quality product. The mattress unzips to fit the newborn bassinet, then zips together again to create an extra thick, comfy mattress for the toddler cot and playpen. This versatility means you can use the travel crib day and night through all stages of your little one’s growth from birth up until approximately 3.5 years—saving you plenty of money in the long run.

The manufacturer’s description claims that the crib takes one second to fold or unfold; however, our tester timed assembly at three minutes and disassembly at less than two. We did find it incredibly easy to set up, earning the crib a near-perfect score for this element of the testing process. At 15.4 pounds, it isn’t the lightest cot on this list and probably not the most convenient choice for air travel. However, we loved that its full size and sturdy construction meant it could double as your permanent crib.

We also fell for its beautiful design and high-quality fabric—in fact, our tester called it the most stylish pack n’ play they’d ever seen. We felt it was durable and likely to last a long time, with a convenient carry bag that makes it ideal for taking with you on your next road trip or staying at Grandma’s house.

Munchkin travel bassinet.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Incredibly lightweight

Folds down flat

Mesh panels for maximum airflow

Relatively short use window

Available online for a fraction of the price of our overall winner, the Munchkin Brica Fold N’ Go Travel Bassinet is the perfect fit for those on a budget. It’s also a very different product, intended for occasional use only during the newborn stage. Brica recommends stopping using the bassinet when your baby reaches three months, 15 pounds, or can push up on their hands and knees—whichever comes first. Nevertheless, we found it almost unbelievably easy to set up, with assembly taking one minute and disassembly taking less than 30 seconds.

With side walls constructed of breathable fabric and mesh panels for maximum airflow, the bassinet is also incredibly lightweight (less than 3 pounds). Its tubular steel frame is held in place by a four-point Safe-T-Lock system but folds flat for effortless transport. We felt it would be ideal for air travel—although we wished it came with a carry bag to help keep it clean. We thought it was relatively sturdy and easy to spot clean, though the removable mattress pad comes with a water-resistant sheet.

KidCo Peapod Travel Bed

  • Durability 4 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

Essentially self-assembling

Great age range from 6 months to 3 years

Ultra lightweight

The material could be a little thicker

If you’re looking to spend under $100 on a product that still guarantees good quality and an extended lifetime, we recommend the KidCo PeaPod Travel Bed. It weighs less than 3 pounds and is incredibly lightweight and easy to carry using convenient shoulder straps. Once opened, the tent-like travel bed pops up on its own. We found that, including the time taken to attach the removable sleeping pad, it took less than two minutes to assemble and disassemble, and we felt that it would also be a great fit for outdoor uses such as backyard campouts and the beach.

The tent crib features a large zippered panel for easy access and walls made of lightweight mesh. These are great for maximum airflow and also double as an insect screen. The material is coated for UV protection, while anchor straps help to secure the tent against breezes (or active occupants!). We felt it would hold up well to the toddler years and be easy to spot-clean when necessary. Choose yours in colors ranging from Midnight to Cranberry or Tangerine.

Dimensions: 46 x 18 x 28 inches | Weight: 2.45 pounds | Maximum Weight Recommendation: 3 years

Best for Playtime

Chicco alfa lite lightweight travel playard.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Quick, intuitive setup

Smart safety features

Side panel for easy access

The mattress could be a bit thicker

For a travel crib that doubles as an on-the-go play yard, we love the Chicco Alfa Lite. It assembles in just three minutes with a snap-open motion that locks the legs in place and takes less than a minute to disassemble. We found both steps so intuitive that the instructions were unnecessary. The zip-open side panel was a particular highlight for us, allowing the gentle placement of younger babies and the freedom to come and go for older children. Best of all, the zipper is lockable from the outside to prevent wandering at night.

The full-size mattress creates ample space for playtime and is made extra secure by buckling underneath the cot to eliminate any risk of suffocation. If you need to move the cot around, we found it easy to do so with side handles that provide a good grip. Both the materials and the structure felt solid, and the crib survived our drop test undamaged. When folded back down into its zippered carry bag, we found it pretty light, too. Finally, the GREENGUARD Gold Certified materials are removable for machine washing.

Dimensions: 43 x 29 x 25 inches | Weight: 13 pounds | Maximum Weight Recommendation: 30 pounds

Best Portability

Zoe the cloud.

  • Ease of Setup 4 /5

Packs compactly into a backpack

Wipe-clean, mesh walls

Extra comfortable plush mattress

Disassembly may require some practice

If you’re traveling with a crib, the chances are you’re also traveling with the rest of the paraphernalia a small child needs. The Cloud from Zoebaby keeps your hands free for other gear thanks to its clever backpack-style carry bag and compact design. Although it weighs 15 pounds (more than most others on this list), it felt light to carry and also features wheels for moving it easily once set up. Setup and take-down took us around five minutes, though we thought this time would be much shorter once we were familiar with the crib’s straps and buttons.

The walls are breathable mesh with water-resistant Luxe fabric accents. The crib floor floats 3 inches off the floor, keeping your little one away from potential drafts—while the mattress was a particular highlight for us, being thicker and plusher than standard mattresses. The crib withstood our durability tests well, and we liked that its shallow depth made it simple to clean. There are six attractive colors to choose from, including practical gray to pastel pink or blue.

Dimensions: 44 x 28 x 26.5 inches | Weight: 15 pounds | Maximum Weight Recommendation: 30 pounds

Best 2-in-1

Baby joy travel crib 2-in-1 playpen.

  • Portability 4 /5

Zippered side entry panel

Very stable and secure

All fabrics are removable for washing

Not particularly easy to carry

Those searching for a travel crib that can act as a generously sized play area will appreciate the Baby Joy Travel Crib 2-in-1 Playpen. We timed setup and take down at approximately three minutes each, with most of that time used to attach the mattress’ Velcro straps. The actual cot is incredibly easy to unfold and lock into place. It’s designed for babies from birth to 3 years, with breathable mesh walls offering excellent visibility from across the room. A zippered side door provides easy access for crawling and toddling children.

We particularly liked how stable this crib is. With aluminum tubes reinforcing each corner, it felt rock solid even when we dropped a 25-pound sandbag into it and threw it around. We found it hard to tip over, even for an adult. Materials are high quality, while the mattress cover and crib fabrics can all be removed and washed as needed. The only downside was that the crib lacked portability. We felt an over-the-shoulder strap would have been more useful than the short carry handles included and that it was too wide for convenient air travel.

Dimensions: 45.5 x 31 x 27 inches | Weight: 11 pounds | Maximum Weight Recommendation: 33 pounds

Best Compact

Kidco peapod plus.

The age limit is up to 5 years

Folds flat for easy storage and transport

Adjustable sun screens and UV protection

Not particularly structured

For the maximum blend of space and compactness, choose the KidCo PeaPod Plus Travel Bed. As the larger version of the standard PeaPod already mentioned on this list, it’s for children aged 6 months to 5 years, yet still weighs in at just 3.65 pounds. When not used, it folds flat into a compact circle that can be easily slung over the shoulder or carried in hand. We loved that it’s small enough for easy air travel or to realistically keep in the trunk of your car for “just-in-case” situations.

It took us seconds to pop the tent up and less than two minutes to attach the Micro-Lite sleeping pad (this snaps on underneath the crib floor to avoid any risk of suffocation). Take down time was less than three minutes. Like its smaller sibling, the PeaPod Plus features lightweight mesh walls with a tight-enough weave to protect from insects and UV protection and adjustable sunscreens. Entry is through an extra-large, zippered side panel. The pod comes in Midnight or Camo and would be easy to spot clean.

Dimensions: 52.5 x 34 x 22 inches | Weight: 3.65 pounds | Maximum Weight Recommendation: 5 years

Best Splurge

Uppababy remi portable playard.

Buy Buy Baby

Zip-on bassinet attachment

Stood up to durability tests perfectly

Zippered panel for easy access

The heaviest option on this list

The UPPABaby Remi Portable Playard retails for roughly seven times the price of our budget pick; however, its excellent quality and intuitive design make it a worthwhile investment for frequent travelers or those who plan to use it as a primary sleeping space. It’s intended for babies up to 18 months old and comes with a zip-on bassinet attachment that allows easy bedside access to your newborn. Setting up the crib frame takes a matter of seconds and can be completed with one hand.

We did find that figuring out the bassinet attachment took us several minutes—however, once learned, this process would be much shorter. The crib also features a zip-open panel for easy access, mesh walls for clear views and optimum ventilation, and a triple-layer mesh mattress for ultimate breathability. We found it very sturdy even when moved around and subjected to our sandbag tests. The quality of the materials is top-notch. It is relatively heavy (20 pounds)—however, a good quality carry bag with handles on the top and bottom makes transportation easy.

Dimensions: 40.5 x 28.5 x 26 inches | Weight: 20 pounds | Maximum Weight Recommendation: 20 pounds

Best Bassinet

Chicco lullago anywhere portable bassinet.

Moving it around the house is easy and simple

Fabrics zip off for machine washing

It takes less than a minute to set up

A relatively short window for use

We love the Chicco LullaGo Anywhere Portable Bassinet for its high-quality design, which stood up well to our durability tests. It features a firm, flat sleep surface with mesh side panels for maximum visibility and ventilation; with metal legs that snap into place and a convenient shade canopy. It took us less than a minute to set it up and the same amount of time to fold it flat and fit it into its low-profile carry bag. At just 12 pounds, it’s wonderfully light—so much so that you can easily move it from one area of the house to another to keep an eye on baby during naptime.

Other thoughtful features include a mesh storage pocket for keeping essentials handy and a waterproof mattress with a fitted sheet. Best of all (during a stage when accidents happen often), all fabrics zip off for easy machine washing. For added peace of mind, the bassinet is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means it’s been independently tested for low chemical emissions to ensure your little one is breathing the healthiest air possible. It comes in several colors, including Sandstone or Grey Star.

Dimensions: 30 x 28 x 18 inches | Weight: 12 pounds | Maximum Weight Recommendation: 20 pounds

How We Rated the Travel Cribs

  • 4.8 to 5 stars: These are the best travel cribs we reviewed. We recommend them without reservation.
  • 4.5 to 4.7 stars: These travel cribs are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them.
  • 4.0 to 4.5 stars: We think these are great travel cribs, but others are better.
  • 3.5 to 3.9 stars: These travel cribs are just average.
  • 3.4 and below: We don't recommend travel cribs with this rating; you won't find any on our list.

Chicco Dash Instant Setup Playard : This was a solid crib with high-quality materials—however, we found it so difficult to attach the mattress' Velcro straps that we gave up, and it's too bulky and heavy for easy travel.

Graco My View Travel Crib With Stages : Compact and well-made, we liked that this crib was quick to assemble. It lost points due to its relatively small size, and the bassinet section doesn't fit in the carry bag.

Baby Jogger City Suite Multi-Level Playard : We loved this crib's look, quality materials, and lightweight construction. We didn't love that it required two people to set it up or that the mattress buckled slightly in play yard mode.

Pamo Babe Deluxe Portable Nursery Center : This crib initially impressed us by offering a bassinet mode, a travel crib/play yard mode, and a changing table. However, it started to collapse during testing, which made us question its safety.

4moms Breeze GO Playard : We assembled this crib without instructions and liked its sturdiness and simple mattress design. However, we felt the price was high for relatively few bells and whistles.

Dream On Me Nest Portable Play Yard With Carry Bag And Shoulder Strap : Although four separate testers tried, we could not successfully assemble this crib, which we found to be frustrating and useless.

AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot Playard : This crib was easy to set up, although the zipper for the bassinet section broke. It wasn't particularly structurally secure, either, and when folded, it was heavy and awkward to carry.

Gladly Family Merritt Portable Playard Suite : We loved this crib on most fronts—it's incredibly durable and sturdy, easy to clean, and boasts plenty of smart features. The only downside? It's possibly too heavy to be a true travel crib.

MiClassic Foldable 2-in-1 Stationary & Rock Bassinet : This bassinet was a win for us; easy to set up, light, easy to clean, and with a nice carry bag. Our only complaints were the jerky rocking function and the product's limited window of use.

Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Harmony Baby Bed : This baby bed is super lightweight and essentially assembles itself upon being taken out of the box. However, it has a minimal use period—only until the baby starts to roll over.

First, we timed how long it took to assemble the crib and evaluated how easy the setup process was. Where relevant, we checked how simple it was to adjust it to its different stages (from bassinet to cot, for example). We assessed whether the mattress would fit a standard crib sheet or required a special size; then, we moved the crib across the room while fully assembled to see how easy it was to do so and whether all the parts remained securely in place. We also examined each feature and shook the frame to determine its sturdiness.

Next, we placed a sandbag in the crib to replicate a baby or toddler (depending on the weight the product was certified for). We checked how the added weight affected the crib’s stability, then dropped the sandbag from 6 inches to simulate a toddler jumping up and down. Finally, we timed how long it took to disassemble the travel cot. Once packed away, we tested how easy it was to carry the crib before dropping it from waist height to test its durability further.

Each product was scored from 1 to 5 for ease of setup, portability, quality, durability, ease of cleaning, and value.

What to Look for in a Travel Crib

Weight and dimensions.

Travel cribs generally come in two styles. "Full-size" cribs that last through to the toddler years often double as a play yard, and smaller bassinets are meant exclusively for newborns. When choosing which one to purchase, consider your needs and whether the extended lifespan of a larger crib might make the trade-off of it being a little less portable worth it. The best option for you depends on your child's needs and how you plan on traveling—cribs for air travel will need to be much lighter than those packed in the car.

How much you can expect to pay for a travel crib depends on the style and brand you go for. For example, our category winners range in price from just under $50 to nearly seven times that much—but what you get for your money differs considerably, too (one’s a foldable bassinet, the other’s a bassinet, crib, and play yard that could be used permanently). When deciding how much to spend, consider what you can afford and the long-term savings of purchasing a product that can be used throughout your baby’s early life, from newborn to toddler.

Other Features

Other features to look out for range from the bassinet and changing table attachments to zippered side panels that provide easy access to the crib when you want it to double as a play yard. Any parent knows the value of baby equipment that’s easy to clean, so look for wipe-down surfaces and removable, machine-washable fabrics. Setup shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes, and if it’s possible to do it one-handed, so much the better. Finally, the best cribs fold down for easy over-the-shoulder or backpack-style carrying, keeping your hands free for everything else.

You should always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines before cleaning your travel crib since best practices differ from one model to the next. However, most can be spot-cleaned with warm water and a soft cloth, while the best feature fabrics can be removed and machine-washed when necessary. Many come with waterproof mattresses that can also be wiped clean. If yours doesn’t, after-market mattress protectors are often available, although you should always consult an expert before adding anything to your baby’s sleeping environment.

Some travel cribs fold flat and are small enough to pack in your suitcase. Others are compact enough to count as carry-on luggage and can be stowed in an overhead compartment. Often, even if your travel crib is substantially bigger, you can take it as checked luggage. Many airlines allow you to take a travel crib as an additional piece of checked luggage for free. However, rules vary, so check specific airline regulations for flying with children before deciding whether to take your crib with you.

Some parents choose to invest in a pack-n’-play-style travel crib as their child’s permanent sleeping place. Otherwise, having a travel crib as a backup is worth it if you travel regularly and don’t want the hassle of always having to check whether your hotel or vacation rental can provide a cot (or if you simply want the peace of mind of knowing the cot’s history and quality). Many parents also purchase one to keep at a place their child regularly sleeps—a grandparent or shared custodian’s house, for example, or even in another room of their own home.

20 Best Travel Cots UK – Expert Buyers Guide (2023)

Getting a travel cot is useful for so many different situations. Grandparents can fold out the cot when they’ve got the little one for a night or a few hours and put it away the rest of the time. It is an absolute must-have for any commuter parent.

You can, of course, take it away on holiday and always know you’ll have a travel cot to use.

But finding the best travel cot can be hard so I’ve put together this guide to help you find the exact travel cot you need.

I’ve included some of the different things you have to think about and then given my recommendations of the best travel cots and provided a short review of each.

Top 5 Best Travel Cots UK

  • Top Choice – Nuna Sena Aire Travel Cot Play Pen
  • Best Travel Cot with Mattress – John Lewis & Partners Travel Cot
  • Best Lightweight – BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light
  • Best Budget – Babyway BTC Classic Travel Cot Playpen
  • Best Travel Cot Playpen – Hauck Dream’n Play Travel Cot

1. Top Choice – Nuna Sena Aire Travel Cot Play Pen

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 - An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Nuna Sena

Weight: 9.7 Kg

  • Doubles As Play Space
  • Raised Sleep Area
  • Suitable to 15 Kg
  • Folds With One Hand

PRICE & REVIEWS

The Nuna Space travel cot is pretty nifty because it has a raised sleep space so you don’t have to bend all the way in to put your baby to bed.

The raised sleep space then gets removed and you can use the cot as a playpen.

It’s got a mattress pad over as opposed to a mattress so it’s not suitable for overnight use but the 2 in 1 makes it a great choice for on the go or occasional use at someone else’s house.

It’s also got padded feet so it doesn’t slide around on wood floors.

2. Best Travel Cot with Mattress – John Lewis & Partners Travel Cot

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 - An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: John Lewis & Partners

Weight: 13.6 Kg

  • Mattress Included
  • Travel Bag Included
  • Easy Set-Up

With a travel cot mattress included, straight out of the box, this cot is ready for your baby to doze in. It is a high-quality option for sleeping on the move.

it is easy to pop-up and take-down. You should definitely read the instructions first as it might not be immediately obvious how to build it up. With a travel bag included it is easy to take with you too.

At 13.6 Kg it is one of the heavier options although that shouldn’t be an issue if you are taking it in your car. This might be a more expensive option but comes with fantastic reliability.

3. Best Lightweight – BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 - An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: BabyBjorn

Weight: 6Kg

  • Easy To assemble
  • Lightweight To Transport
  • Folds Up Quickly

30 million kids have been carried in BabyBjorn’s various baby carriers which is quite a feat!

They have a very sturdy and lightweight travel cot so carrying it around is an absolute dream. Certainly the lightest of the cots we have reviewed.

The mattress inside is very good quality and will stand the test of time even if you use it every night.

Babybjorn themselves offer great customer service, any problems at all they’re always happy to help, even if you lose the case just call them up and I’m sure they’ll sort you out with a new one.

4. Best Budget – Babyway BTC Classic Travel Cot Playpen With Mattress And Carry Bag

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Babyway

Weight: 8.4 Kg

  • Toddlers up to 15 kg
  • Wipe-Clean Material

First off, this absolutely needs a mattress to go with it. It’s just a thin base layer that’s included so don’t get suckered too deep into the price.

That said it’s still a good price and a nice basic travel cot. Nothing special but if you get an extra mattress it’ll be fine for occasional use or while you’re on holiday. The travel bag makes transporting this cot easy.

Made of wipe-clean fabric it is easy to tidy up. The mesh sides make it easy to check on your little one.

A good choice for a tight budget and Amazon is able to deliver it quickly.

5. Best Travel Cot Playpen – Hauck Dream’n Play Travel Cot 120 x 60 cm from Birth to 15 kg

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 - An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Hauck

Weight: 9 Kg

  • Large Mesh Sides
  • Easy Pop-Up
  • Doubles as a Playpen

This is one travel crib that is far more than a bed; it also doubles as an ideal playpen. Have peace of mind that your little ray of sunshine is safe and staying put with wide mesh sides let you keep an eye on them and also provide excellent air circulation.

The fold-up mechanism for this cot is very clever. It makes it very easy to pop-up and takedown. Do be careful to not allow your little treasure to play with it while it is folded up. It relies on a folding cross-action mechanism that you don’t want little fingers in.

The travel bag will also double as a means of keeping it out of reach while it is stored away.

CAN I USE A TRAVEL COT AT HOME?

Sometimes you don’t have space for a full-size cot but your baby’s outgrown their Moses basket so you need something to use in the meantime.

That makes a travel cot the perfect solution. My only suggestion would be to get a different cot mattress. The mattresses that come with the travel cot tend to be for shorter-term use so it might not be as sturdy.

HOW EASY IS IT TO TRANSPORT

Most travel cots should fold up into some sort of travel case for easy transport so that is, of course, a must. All the travel cots talked about in this article do, it’s more if you’re buying second hand it’s something to be aware of.

Aside from that you also want to be aware of the weight as you’ll be the one carrying it! And then if you have trouble carrying things you get some that have wheels so that’s always an option.

HOW LONG CAN I USE A TRAVEL COT?

It varies a lot from one baby to another but in general, they’re good from birth till 2-3 years old. If they look too big for it they probably are.

WHERE CAN I USE A TRAVEL COT

Pretty much anywhere! At work, at home, at your friends, on holiday, visiting the inlaws. They can even be taken on flights in your hand luggage.

As long as it’s indoors and you have enough space to pop it up you can go ahead and do so.

PROBLEMS WITH A TRAVEL COT

The only issue is that they can be very deep and on the floor, so if you have back problems or you’re recovering from pregnancy you might struggle to pick up and put down your baby.

For most, it’s absolutely fine but for those with back issues, I wanted to mention.

Other Travel Cot Reviews

As it sounds I wanted to review some other travel cots in case those top 5 didn’t quite do it for you.

Toddler Travel Cots

Costway portable baby travel cot, 2 in 1 design as bassinet bed & activity play center.

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Costway

Weight: 7 Kg

  • Easy to Move – On Wheels
  • Machine Washable Mattress Included

This travel crib is so simple to pop-up. It even comes with a cute mobile that clips on to the top edge.

This is another cot that is designed to double as both a place to sleep and a place to play. Which makes sense because often one can lead to the other.

The included mattress is machine washable to this cot is easy to clean no matter how messy it gets.

Milliard Portable Toddler Bumper Bed

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Milliard

Weight: 4.68 Kg

  • Bed-like design
  • Waterproof Machine Washable Cover

This is a simple yet clever sleeping solution to commuting toddler sleeping needs. It is a fold-out bumper bed which joins together with velcro. Much more of a bed than a travel crib.

This also makes for a transition sleeping space between a cot and a big-kid bed. This may be the lightest of sleeping solutions, but it is still somewhat bulky and clumsy, even when folded.

Baby Joy Medium Travel Cot Set – Portable Folding Travel Cot Crib Playpen and 100% Waterproof Foam Mattress

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Baby Joy

  • Mosquito Net
  • Extra Storage

This is one travel cot with excellent extra features. The mosquito net makes this crib particularly suited for travel to areas with, well, mosquitos.

What’s more, it doubles as extra storage with a toy bag built into the end of the cot. It doesn’t have to store toys, you could use it as a built-in changing bag. Keep nappies, wipes, or other baby products in there.

TecTake Portable Child Baby Infant Playpen Travel Cot Bed

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: TecTake

Weight: 9.3 Kg

  • Side Zipper
  • Colourful and fun Doggy Design

Your little terrier will love this cot. it is colourful and the doggy design is lovely.

The side zipper makes it into a fun den for your child to come and go as they please. They will probably be able to undo the zipper from the inside.

The mattress which comes with it is a bit thin. You can certainly feel the frame underneath. It is more suited as a playpen floor. I definitely recommend a thicker padded mattress for your little one to sleep on.

Graco Compact Travel Cot (Birth to 3 Years Approx.) with Signature Graco Push-Button Fold

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Graco

  • Helpful For Learning To Stand
  • Excellent Value

This cot is designed with sides just at the perfect height for your little one learning pull themselves up and stand. The mesh sides keep your little terror in plain sight you you always know what mischief they’re getting up to.

It doesn’t fold down and compact as much as other models and the base could certainly be softer but that is reflected in the price point as this is one of the cheaper options. An additional padded mattress makes this one extremely functional travel crib.

Baby Travel Cots

Joie baby kubbie sleep bedside travel cot.

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Joie Baby

Weight: 11 Kg

  • Retractable Side
  • Sturdy and Reliable

This is one sturdy frame that you are sure to be able to rely on. It even has a side that retracts down like regular non-travel cribs. Although it would be nice if the side did come down lower.

There is one aspect I think is a bit silly. The mattress is a little thin and the way which it rests inside the cot makes it difficult to get the mattress to lie flat. Additionally finding fitted sheets for this particular size of mattress can be difficult.

Besrey 2 in 1 Travel Cot for Baby Kids with Swing+Wheels Bassinet Set

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Besrey

Weight: 9.4 Kg

  • Comfortable Bassinet Design

This is one travel cot which absolutely does not lack for storage space. With a large storage box underneath, side pocket, and bottle holder you will always have nappies and other baby products stored away yet very handy.

It folds up to about the size of a set of retractable steps; so a little bulkier than other designs. While you might not be able to take it in your carry on, it will fit in a car boot no problem. It is comfortable and ideal for traveling younger babies.

Baby Travel Cot, 2 in 1 Portable Infant Bassinet Bed and Changing Table

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Birtech

Weight: 12 Kg

  • Lots of Storage
  • Built-in Changing Table

This travel cot is advertised as 2 in 1 but it is so much more than that. While it makes a cozy comfy bed; it is also a changing table, a play pen, and includes a mosquito net. Not to mention how easy it is to set-up and take-down.

I really like the big zip opening on the side. Suddenly it’s more of a play-den than a play-pen.

It would be great if it included a mattress. Although sometimes it’s best to get a real good padded mattress separately.

Baby Crib Foldable Travel Cot Bed Playpen with Bassinet

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Hadwin

Weight: 9.5 Kg

  • Musical Mobile
  • Handy Changing Table and Storage Arrangement

The real cherry on the cake with this crib is the cute musical mobile. The comfortable bassinet design is sure to let your little one relax and the mobile will sing them off to dreamland.

The changing table with handy storage pouch means you will have baby products ready to go when you need them. The side pouch is also a great place to store a baby monitor.

It’s a bit of a shame this cot doesn’t come with a mattress. Still, that is an opportunity to find something extra comfy separately.

Graco Contour Electra Travel Cot with Integrated Changing Table, Night Light, Music and Vibration

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Weight: 13 Kg

  • Nightlight, Music, and Gentle Vibration
  • Built-in changing table and mobile

This travel cot really is trying to provide some lovely extra features. With built-in night lights, music, and gentle vibration function your little one will be snoozing peacefully.

The mattress is certainly firm. It is ideal for sitting and playing on but you definitely want something else on top for sleeping.

The changing unit is a bit tricky to put together and the instructions could be more helpful.

Compact Travel Cots

Venture roma travel cot includes foam mattress and carry bag.

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Venture

Weight: 6 Kg

  • Comfortable Hammock-Like Design

This cot really is a simple and effective design. I would describe this more as a hammock with mesh sides; which I love because it means there is no chance of uncomfortable bars disturbing your treasure’s sleep.

Certainly one of the lightest options available; it folds up small and is easy to take on the go. It even includes a mattress.

Have peace of mind knowing that it meets British safety standards. So as well as being easy to clean it is most importantly very safe and secure.

Red Kite Sleeptight Travel Cot

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Red Kite

Weight: 7.32 Kg

  • Great Value
  • Easy Assembly

If you want a spacious cot that becomes really small then look no further. It really is easy to assemble and folds down nice, small, and compact. Although it’s worth a quick check of the manual.

The included mattress is a bit thin and flimsy. It also arrived with a slightly different pattern than advertised. The mattress cover has a lot of excess material which can result in it bunching up as your little one moves around. I recommend getting a real nice padded mattress to go on top.

Micralite Sleep & Go Newborn Travel Cot

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Brand: Micralite

Weight: 7.5 Kg

  • Fast Set-up
  • Fun 2-in-1 Playpen

This is a lovely, comfortable, and simple bassinet design. It will give you an easy time building it, and your child an easy time sleeping.

I really like how effortless it is to remove the bassinet part and transform it into a large playpen. It even has a whole mesh side that will unzip and tuck away.

It is a shame it is not a machine washable material. It’s sponge clean only. Which is not ideal for when big messes happen.

Play Pen Travel Cots

Hauck sleep n play center, 7-part folding travel cot from birth to 15 kg.

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Weight: 9.1 Kg

  • Can sleep babies or toddlers

Here is one seriously multifunctional cot. Designed with a removable bassinet, removable changing table, easy access zipper on the side, and wheels for handy mobility.

I get the impression it is more intended for your child to sleep in the bassinet level rather than the playpen base. I think that is strange because it would make an ideal cot for 1 to 2 year-olds if it had a comfier base in the playpen arrangement.

TecTake Baby Travel Cot Bed Playpen with Practical Carry Bag

20 Best Travel Cots UK 2020 – An Expert Buyers Guide

Weight: 8.7 Kg

  • Available in Lovely Colours

Available in a range of colours. My favorite is the creamy beige. Really cute. The great big zippered mesh side can fold out of the way so easily your little terror will be able to do it.

Super easy to set up. It can be a little stiff and tricky to fold up again though.

The mattress in this cot is more comfortable than most. I would still recommend an extra padded mattress for ideal comfort.

When you’re trying to choose a travel cot there are so many aspects to weigh up. Ideally you want it to have plenty of space for your little monster but also fold up small and lightweight.

Certainly you don’t want to be compromising on comfort. If your child can’t sleep then neither will you.

Ultimately the best choice comes down to what can suit your needs, and most importantly, your child’s needs.

What Is a Travel Crib?

Do you need a travel crib, what to look for in a travel crib, babylist’s picks for the best travel cribs, best lightweight travel crib.

Babybjörn Travel Crib & Organic Sheet Bundle - Dark Green - $279.99.

Babybjörn Travel Crib & Organic Sheet Bundle - Dark Green

Why we love it.

Weighing in at just 13 pounds, the Babybjörn Travel Crib is one of the lightest travel cribs on the market, making it especially ideal if you’re a family who’s routinely on the go. Top features include an incredibly easy setup (it unfolds and breaks down in one motion, and there are no loose parts to worry about), breathable mesh sides and a firm but ultra-comfy mattress that parents rave about. The mattress and the fabric frame are both machine washable, so it’s easy to clean. And when the crib is folded in its carrying case, it will fit within any airline baggage compartment. Wheels up, with baby in tow!

Keep in Mind

You’ll want to stop using this travel crib around three years old or until your little one is able to climb out of it. But unlike many other travel cribs, there’s no weight limit for the Babybjörn, since the crib’s mattress rests on ground. This means you’ll get more time out of this travel crib than most.

What Babylist Parents Say

“Very happy with this travel crib – lightweight, packable, set up is incredibly easy, and it’s simple to disassemble for cleaning. The thing that set this crib apart for other similar travel-appropriate pack-and-plays for us was the thicker mattress – our 9 month old slept just as well in this travel crib as she does at home. Great product, we would highly recommend!” -BH

Best Affordable Lightweight Travel Crib

Chicco Alfa Lite Lightweight Travel Playard - Dove - $169.99.

Chicco Alfa Lite Lightweight Travel Playard - Dove

A lightweight travel crib is a sound investment if you’re a family who’s frequently on the go or if you plan on using it for multiple children, but many cost upwards of $300, especially after you add on accessories like sheets. Chicco’s Alfa Lite is a stellar lightweight travel crib but is about half the price of other similar options. And don’t worry—you won’t be sacrificing on features or quality. It weighs 13 pounds, is easy to open and close, folds down into a zippered carrying bag (with a large shoulder strap) and even has a zip-down side for easy access to your little one.

The Alfa Lite is Greenguard Gold Certified. Some parents mention that the mattress is on the thinner side.

“This travel playard is perfect. The design is sleek and the safely measures are advanced. The side opening zipper is buckled to the leg so no little hands can magically unzip themselves. The mattress pad also gets buckled in place. It took seconds to set up and take down. The travel playard makes your life so much easier while traveling and doesn’t take up much of any space in the car. 100/10 recommend buying!!!” -Sophia K.

Best Travel Crib for Flying

Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib & Play Yard - $229.95.

Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib & Play Yard

If you’ve ever traveled with kids, especially via plane, you know the value of having one less thing to tote around. Meet the Lotus: the travel-crib-turned-backpack that no traveling family should leave home without. This ultra-lightweight crib folds seamlessly into a compact, backpack-style carrying case, leaving your hands free to deal with the other 142 things they’ll be tasked with for attempting to leave the house with your littles in tow. (This feature comes in especially handy in airports.) We also love the unique zip-down “door” feature of the crib’s mesh side—it makes getting down on baby’s level for cuddles, feeding or play super easy, then quietly zips back up and locks into place.

Like the Babybjörn Travel Crib, the Guava’s mattress is flush to the ground, meaning there’s no weight limit usage recommendations here, either. Some parents report that the mattress is fairly thin, however.

“The Lotus crib is one of the best products we have. It is lightweight, folds and assembles in just a few snaps, and has mesh sides. The fabric comes completely off and is machine washable.” -Kristin

Best Affordable Travel Crib

Graco Pack 'n Play Portable Playard - Reign - $59.99.

Graco Pack 'n Play Portable Playard - Reign

If you’re looking for simple, sturdy travel crib that will stand the test of time but won’t break the bank, this Pack ‘n Play from Graco fits the bill. Although it’s basic, the features are anything but—there are a ton of things that you (and your little one) will love. We especially appreciate the sturdy frame, the roomy area for play and sleep and the push-button fold for quick and easy breakdown. And at around $70, this travel crib is perfect for using as an extra playard around the house and for keeping at the grandparents’ house or anywhere else you know you’ll be visiting on a regular basis.

You can’t attach any extras to this travel crib, like a bassinet or changing table. And some parents complain that the mattress is on the thin side, so that may be something to consider if you’re planning on using it for more than just the occasional weekend away. It’s also fairly heavy, so you won’t want to use it if you’re traveling by plane or anywhere else where you’ll need to carry it around frequently.

Best Travel Crib for Toddlers

Newton Baby Travel Crib and Play Yard - Grey - $299.99.

Newton Baby Travel Crib and Play Yard - Grey

As your baby grows into a toddler , many parents still need the safety that the confines of a crib provide—especially while traveling. But what happens when your toddler is too big for their travel crib but too little for a bed? Enter the Newton. The mattress is about two times larger than most travel cribs, making it ideal for an older toddler who may be sized out of a smaller playard. It’s also 100 percent breathable and washable, made with the same Wovenaire technology used in the brand’s much-loved crib mattress. It’s flush to the ground, so there’s no weight limit, and it’s super comfy and GREENGAURD Gold Certified.

The playard weighs in at about 17 pounds, so while it’s not the lightest on the market, it’s still fairly easy to travel with and the weight is for a good cause. Assembly and breakdown are easy and the crib comes with a travel bag for easy storage. And it’s not just for the toddler years; there’s a bassinet insert for use from day one. Oh, and when you are ready to graduate your toddler from the travel crib, check out these great toddler travel beds .

Because of the Newton’s larger sleep space, it’s a bit bulkier than some of the other travel cribs on our list. The travel bag only has a handle, not a shoulder strap or backpack straps. And the crib is too large to store in the overhead compartment of an airplane

“I despise traditional pack n play style things. Newton’s playard is innovative and will definitely grow with a child from infancy through the preschool years! My 4.5 year old can still sleep in it comfortably with plenty of space. I really appreciate the thought that went into this product.” -Mona

Most Versatile Travel Crib

UPPAbaby REMI Travel Crib & Playard - Charlie - $299.99.

UPPAbaby REMI Travel Crib & Playard - Charlie

And speaking of multifunctional products, the Remi from UPPAbaby is the best choice if you’re looking for an all-in-one travel crib and playard to use both at home and when you’re on the go. There’s a ton of functionality built in to this smartly designed (and beautiful) playard. It’s Greenguard Gold Certified and includes a removable bassinet, a zip-down side panel, a triple layer air mesh mattress and a smooth, simple fold that takes one hand and only a few seconds. There are also lots of accessories to add on. A few of our favorites include the changing station , organizer and canopy .

The Remi is expensive, and even moreso when you start adding on accessories. It’s also fairly heavy, weighing in at about 20 pounds. This isn’t a big deal if you’re planning to use it mostly at home and for the occasional overnight trip, but if your family travels frequently and you need to bring along a place for your baby to sleep, it may not be your best option.

“Incredibly easy to set up. Our baby just started crawling and we don’t have a good play yard set up yet, so this was great to put him in a for the meantime. We purchased it instead of a Graco pack and play because of the zipper access and mattress quality. Love it!!!” -Rachel

Most Portable Travel Crib

Aeromoov Instant Travel Cot - White Sand - $195.00.

Aeromoov Instant Travel Cot - White Sand

Pop-up tent meets travel crib in the Aeromoov. This 11-pound playard works just as well for a day at the beach or the park as it does for an overnight at grandma’s and is our top pick if you’re looking for one piece of gear you can use both indoors and out. The origami-style fold takes about two seconds (literally), and once it’s folded down, the whole thing slips into a bag and is less than five inches wide. It’s easy to stash for travel or throw over your shoulder and carry if you need to bring it along for an outdoor adventure. (There are also lots of useful accessories available like a sunshade and a mosquito net.) Another feature we love: there are two levels, one upper level bassinet-style for newborns up to about two months and a the main lower level for older babies and toddlers.

If you’re using the crib indoors and your little one moves around a lot, the fabric makes a “swishing” sound that’s a bit loud.

Best Travel Cribs for Small Spaces

Bugaboo bugaboo stardust playard - grey melange.

Simple, streamlined and seamless. The Bugaboo Stardust is one of the smaller travel crib + playards on our list, but it packs a big punch. Unlike most travel cribs that open from the center of the base and feature fold-out legs, the standout feature here is the accordion-style fold. It makes it quick and easy to open and close by either pushing or pulling each side. You can even fold the Stardust with the mattress still inside—a pretty big deal and a huge time-saving (and sanity-saving) feature.

The Stardust weighs about 14 pounds and has a compact design that’s ideal for spaces that can’t handle a giant playard, either at home or when you’re on the go. There’s also a bassinet attachment for younger babies, a really comfortable mattress and all-around mesh panels.

The maximum weight limit for the Stardust is similar to the other travel cribs on our list, but because of smaller size, your little one may outgrow it in height sooner than they would with other playards. It’s also on the pricier side.

“I’m a first time mom and it feels like I have tried all the baby products out there. We were in the market for a new pack n’ play so I recently purchased this for my 5.5 month old and it is a game changer when it comes to portability and ease. I’ve found other products like this are bulky and difficult to store, but the Stardust is slender, lightweight and unfolds in one second. (No exaggeration.) I would highly recommend this product for travel, sleeping or playtime - in fact, we’re looking forward to traveling with it over the holidays!” -AlexT

Best Travel Crib for Car Travel

Maxi-cosi swift play yard - classic graphite.

Weighing in at just over 18 pounds, the Maxi-Cosi Swift is too heavy and bulky for regular air travel. But it’s also quite a bit lighter than many of the standard playards on the market, so we still wanted to consider it for our best-of list. That’s why think it’s an ideal choice if you’re a family who travels frequently by car. While you won’t want to lug it around on the regular, it’s easy enough to load and unload from any vehicle. And the setup and breakdown? It’s an actual dream, especially during travel when you have 14 other things to do after you set up your little one’s sleep space. Parents rave about how easy it is—it actually folds in one step using only one hand. Other pros to love include a super sturdy design, a comfortable mattress and a bassinet attachment that comes included at no extra cost.

As noted above, the Swift weighs about 18 pounds, so it’s not the lightest travel crib of the bunch, but isn’t the heaviest, either.

“We have tried a handful of play yards and the difficulty of putting them down and back up is what always frustrates us. The swift is truly like no other. It takes less than 5 seconds to set it up and less than five seconds to break it down. Not only is it so easy but it’s also so aesthetically pleasing!!” -Momof3

A travel crib is a portable crib you can use for sleep or play when you’re away from home with your baby or toddler. While you can use most playards for the same purpose, travel cribs are specifically designed with travel in mind; they’re lighter, more compact and easier to set up and break down than your average playard. Travel cribs generally accommodate newborns to toddlers about three years old.

Whether or not you need a travel crib depends on how often you travel and where you’re heading on your next adventure.

Many hotels and even some rental homes may supply a travel crib. Using a baby gear rental company is an option, too. But if you’re staying somewhere that doesn’t supply a crib, you don’t want to rent or you simply prefer to be in control of what your baby sleeps in while you’re away, investing in a travel crib is probably a good idea.

Besides being a place to rest, travel cribs are also a safe place for your little one to play, especially when you’re away from your usual surroundings and potentially dealing with a non- babyproofed space. (We’re looking at you, sharp table corners and exposed electrical sockets.) You can even use some travel cribs as a napping spot on days spent at the beach or park.

Travel cribs can be expensive. A travel crib is also something you’ll use for years, especially if your family travels frequently. Think through these features before you buy.

  • Weight. This is one of the most important features to look for in a travel crib. A lightweight travel crib is easier to lift and carry than a heavier option. To figure out if this is important to you or not, think through how often you’ll be traveling and which modes of transport you generally use. Do you travel infrequently and often by car? Plan to use your travel crib only for a trip to the grandparents’ once a year? Then your travel crib’s weight may not be hugely important to you. Are you planning several trips by plane where you’ll need to bring your travel crib along? Then the weight of the travel crib you choose should jump to the top of your priority list.
  • Size and portability. Similar to weight, the size and overall portability of your travel crib are important features, but also dependent on how often you travel and how you get wherever you’re going. If you’re a frequent flyer, you’ll want a travel crib that’s not only lightweight but portable, too. Look for a compact crib and something that has either backpack straps or another easy way to carry it through someplace like an airport or train station. If not, however, a slightly larger travel crib or one that doesn’t come with built-in carry straps may be just fine.
  • Longevity. How long you’ll be able to use your travel crib is a big factor to consider while shopping. One thing to consider is the crib’s design. Although not outwardly labeled this way, there are two basic types of travel cribs: cribs with raised mattresses and cribs where the mattress lies flush with the floor. Most travel cribs with raised mattresses have weight maximums. This means that if you have a larger, heavier child, they may exceed the travel crib’s weight long before you feel comfortable letting them sleep in a regular bed or even a toddler travel bed while you’re away from home. Travel cribs where the mattress sits directly on the floor, however, often do not have weight maximums. While your little one still may outgrow the crib by height, these types of travel cribs often can be used for a longer period of time.
  • Ease of breakdown and setup. Travel with babies and toddlers is no easy feat. Look for a travel crib that sets up and breaks down quickly and easily so you can spend less time grappling with gear and more time enjoying your vacation.
  • Materials and breathability. Look for a travel crib with a breathable mattress, breathable mesh sides and one that’s made from soft, comfortable materials. If it’s important to you, you may prefer a travel crib that’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified or uses organic materials. Removable and machine washable sides and covers are also nice-to-have features in case of a mess.
  • Budget. Travel cribs can get pricey, especially if you want one that’s extremely lightweight and portable. Thinking through how often you’ll be traveling and what types of features will make the most sense to you can help you determine your budget.

2022 best travel cot and baby bed for travel: the ultimate guide!

Last Updated on 27/05/2022 by Clotilde Passalacqua

Do you need a baby bed for travel? When you have children, you soon realise that you start asking questions you never thought you would.

In this case, it soon turns out that the right answer is yes. If you like to travel, you must equip yourself with a baby travel bed.

A portable bed for baby or a travel cot will be essential both for parents who only occasionally visit relatives or friends for the weekend, and for parents who embark around the world with their brand new twins!

Of course if you travel only occasionally, you should carefully review the cost aspect, while if you travel often by plane you will probably be looking for a light, compact, and easy to transport travel cot. Deciding what to pack when travelling with a baby cd be overwhelming, you can read here more advice on baby travel essentials and also how to save hundreds in luggage fees when flying Ryanair or other European low cost airlines.

WHICH IS THE BEST BABY TRAVEL BED?

On the market there are many alternatives: travel bed for infant, portable crib for toddlers, and also baby pop up bed and everybody has different needs, so it is not an easy question to answer. It may be overwhelming trying to choose the right model, therefore I distilled the choice down to the 8 models I think are the best to choose from! In this guide we will analyse the best travel cots for different travel styles, to make sure you buy the model that suits your way of travel the best!

Then I will go into the details of each portable travel bed for baby to understand each model and analyse which features make them the best option for families that love to travel.

Here is the criteria for the evaluation:

  • Portability : With a compact travel cot it is important that it is easy to carry on the shoulder, perhaps with a shoulder strap, while pushing a stroller or holding a baby.
  • Weight / dimensions: If you travel a lot by plane, it is important to consider a compact lightweight travel cot, in order to not make travel even more challenging
  • Ease of assembly: If you often make road trips, or you like to change hotels every two / three days, it is important to choose a model that is easy and quick to assemble.
  • Longevity: this is an important aspect to consider based on how long you want to use the baby portable bed you choose. A bit like pushchairs, not all of them are suitable for use from birth, but others are not usable beyond 12/18 months
  • Fabric : it is important to check how easy it is to clean. While travelling you don’t want to waste time and an accident could always happen.
  • Mattress: some mattresses are thicker than others, I wouldn’t discard a model only if the mattress is a bit thinner because little kids need quite a firm mattress, but it is good to be aware of it, perhaps if one night you use the travel crib over a hard floor you can put a towel under the cot to compensate.

Let’s start with an overview!

BABY TRAVEL BED COMPARISON CHART

A lightweight travel cot is a great present for a family of travellers, check this gifts for travelers guide if you need more ideas.

WHY DO YOU NEED A PORTABLE TRAVEL BED FOR BABIES?

There are various reasons why I think it is essential to organise yourself with your own baby travel sleep options:

If you visit relatives or friends, you may be tempted to find a temporary solution or to try co-sleeping, but unless you are already used to this solution it can only prove to be a producer of a sleepless night.

If you stay in a hotel you must be absolutely sure that the baby bed supplied complies with the most current safety standards.

Young children, much more than adults, are likely to become infected with germs and bacteria, especially in the period when they are bringing everything to their mouth because that’s their way to discover the world. In a hotel it is almost impossible to be sure that the baby cot supplied has been carefully sterilised.

If, like me, before Liam and Santiago, you have not been interested in the subject before, you will be amazed at what a hotel can ask for, per night, just to add a simple baby crib or an extra bed (usually in the case of children over two years).

At the hotels during our tragicomic first beach holiday , for example, we were asked for Euro30 per night per child, so for two weeks it would have cost us over Euro800!!!!

8 BEST BABY BED FOR TRAVEL: DETAILED REVIEW

Best overall travel cot.

MICRALITE SLEEP AND GO TRAVEL COT

 Best Overall Travel cot MICROLITE.travel-cot-01

The Micralite sleep&go travel cot is probably the best portable travel crib on the market in 2020. It seems that the designer took all the best elements of other top travel cots, like the Baby Bjorn or Phil & Teds, made it even more functional and added some other cool features. Like the BabyBjorn, it is a super easy to assemble and to transport travel cot, watch here the official video to appreciate these features . This cot folds small into a padded travel bag, with a comfy handle and a practical shoulder strap. It also features the newest generation of infant bassinet (depending on the shop it may be included or sold separately), that can super easily zip to the top and be used until the baby is around 6 months. Really practical if you want to use the travel cot as a newborn travel bed and you want to save yourself from back-pain.

  • great design
  • super easy to assemble
  • really practical bag to store and transport
  • practical bassinet
  • side panel zip down
  • plastic bottom makes it possible to use outdoor
  • it could be lighter
  • needs to be checked-in on a flight

Second best if money isn’t an issue

BABY BJORN TRAVEL COT LIGHT

Baby Bjorn

This portable travel cot isn’t cheap, but it is so practical that you will maybe not regret the money spent. Especially if you like road trips and you change location often then this is just amazing. It requires no time to assemble it or put it away. It folds neatly into a sort of small suitcase with a big handle to carry it easily. The fabric and the base are built in, so there are no loose parts to assemble, but the mesh is also really easy to remove to wash. Watch the assembly video to be amazed about how clever it is.

  • great size from newborn to 3 years +
  • easy to carry with included bag
  • side panel doesn’t zip down
  • no newborn bassinet available

Best lightweight / Best twins travel cot

PHIL & TEDS TRAVELLER

Best lightweight travel cot Phil & Teds

“The only travel cot lighter than your baby” is the slogan that Phil & Teds have been using for years. It is this feature that still keeps The Phil & Teds traveller as one of the top choices on my list. The other element that sets apart this portable crib for travel from the contenders is the way you assembly it. Unfortunately the structure doesn’t come already fixed to the mesh, but needs to be put together. It doesn’t really require more than 2-3 minutes, but you maybe want to consider this aspect, especially if the weight is not a key element for you. Here is the link to the Phil & Teds traveller assembly video  if you want to understand better the assembly technique. As parents of twins we can say that this is the best portable crib if you have twins. You can carry 2 and you will still end with a lighter load than one of most of the other models. We used 2 of these portable travel cribs until our boys were over 3 years old.

  • the lightest traditional travel cot, only 2.8kg
  • easy to carry on a shoulder
  • side panel zip down completely
  • mesh bassinet for newborn available
  • sunshade top cover available
  • thermally insulated mattress
  • allowed as hand luggage from some airlines
  • assembly is more complicated than other models like Baby Bjorn or Micralite
  • newborn bassinet sold separately
  • inflatable mattress on the thin side
  • sunshade top cover sold separately

Best compact travel c rib

GUAVA LOTUS TRAVEL CRIB

Best compact travel crib guava lotus

The Lotus travel crib is probably the most compact of all the traditional travel cots. The designers developed this clever 3D mechanism, that makes the crib fold in a Z way and simply fit in the backpack. Watch here the official video on how to assemble it. All parts are connected, so no risk to loose anything. Only the mattress needs to be fixed to the feet. One of the few downsides is it is not easily available everywhere.

  • easy to assemble
  • super easy to carry as a back pack
  • most airlines will consider it hand luggage
  • newborn bassinet available
  • newborn bassinet is sold separately
  • fixing the mattress could be a bit laborious
  • mattress sheet is sold separately
  • not easy to buy in Europe

Best baby crib for under $50 £40

HAUCK DISNEY DREAM ‘N PLAY TRAVEL COT

Best baby crib for under $50

The Hauck Dream ‘n Play travel cot is the most traditional travel cot in this list. For a price tag under $50 (£40) I could not leave it out because there are still situations when it could be worth considering. First of all it is quite big, but if on one hand this means it is the biggest and heaviest in the list, on the other hand it is a really good travel cot for toddler. If you travel mainly by car (with generous boot), mainly visiting friends and family for a weekend or you stay in one place, then save same money and get one of these cots. It doesn’t have the cool features of some others like a newborn bassinet, and doesn’t fold into a back pack, but it still comes with a useful carrying bag. We now have been using two older models of the Hauck for more than 4 years when visiting my dad in Italy. We leave them there but they are still compact enough to be stored away. We think they’re also perfect for a weekend away with the car.

  • easy enough to assemble, but only if you follow the instructions!
  • great size from newborn to 4 years +
  • big enough to be used as a small playpen
  • heavy, kg. 9,4
  • not mesh panel all around

Best travel bassinet

BIZZI GROWIN POD TRAVEL CRIB

Best travel bassinet

The Bizzi Growin Pod travel Crib doesn’t have a long life in use as a travel cot, but it is really clever and deserves a space on this list. Parents that prefer to travel with their newborn in a carrier instead of in a pram, will find this changing bag that transforms into a travel crib for newborns particularly useful. Perfect for all parents that like to be out and about all day while travelling, but want to secure a safe space for the little one to nap. One side of the changing bag folds down and you just need to insert 2 lightweight poles to keep the mesh sides in place. Includes a padded mattress for overnight sleep. The changing bag also includes several compartments to keep everything organised including an insulated bottle pocket.

  • really light
  • double function
  • washable mattress
  • short use as a crib

Best portable crib for outdoor travel

LITTLELIFE ARC 2 LIGTHWEIGT TRAVEL COT

Best portable crib for outdoor travel littlelife arc2

The Littlelife Arc 2 Lightweight Travel Cot, like the Kidco Peapod, developed the traditional travel concept a little further. The designers took inspiration more from the camping life than the usual nursery environment, but the results I think are excellent. This baby travel tent packs easily in a light, small backpack (including the mattress and mattress sheet), and it takes only few minutes to assemble. The assembling is not difficult but it is important to follow the instructions the first time, it is like building a mini camping tent. This is an amazing on the go baby bed, for all families who love to pack really minimally and love life outdoors, as it doubles up as a shaded place for the little one to play during the day outside.

  • really light only 2.5kg
  • great size from newborn
  • includes bed sheet
  • mesh panel on the side and on the top
  • safety toggle to block the zip
  • sunshade available
  • sunshade sold separately

Best pop up travel cot

KIDCO PEAPOD PLUS TRAVEL BED

Best pop up travel cot

The Kidco Peapod Plus travel bed is another tent-style travel cot. It is even lighter than the Littlelife Arc 2, as it is only 1.66kg. The best part is it comes out of his bag already assembled! Yes it is a sort of pop up toddler bed! The other key difference with the Littlelife is that can be used only from 12 months on-wards, but it should last up to 5 years. This travel toddler bed is probably the lightest and longest lasting model on the market, the only issue is that its not available Worldwide. It is really easy to buy in the USA but less in Europe.

  • really light only 1.6kg
  • great size from 1 to 5 years
  • mesh panel on the side
  • 2 big openings on the side, 1 to enter and 1 as a meshed screen
  • 2 smaller meshed screens
  • mattress attached at the bottom, for safety
  • easy to remove and wash mattress
  • tricky to put back in its bag
  • mattress is quite thin
  • not worldwide available

TWINS TRAVEL COT

Where are the travel baby beds for twins? As we have twins you might expect me to be ready with a list of cots for twins, but the reality is there are not many on the market. The available options are limited to use in the first few months of life and are not ideal for travelling. The best baby crib for twins to keep at home are the Halo Bassinest and the Simmons bassinet for twins . Two ingenious products, which I hope will be adapted to easily disassemble to make it travel friendly. They were developed on the concept of other cradles that attach to the adults bed, but they are larger and the Halo rotates allowing the parent to reach the baby who needs cuddling without leaving the bed. A mesh panel divides the cot for twins in two so that the babies cannot bother each other, but they can see each other.

Another very popular baby cot for twins is the Joovi room 2 , practically a large playard that, by purchasing the nursery center kit separately, can be divided to accommodate two babies. The playard itself does not take up much more space than a traditional travel cot, but the nursery center is another element to consider to carry around.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST KIDS PORTABLE BED

If, despite my selection you are still confused, it is normal. Many factors influence your choice and then there are always personal preferences that only you can judge, and that will make you lean towards one model or another. I personally have used 3 different types of travel cot: two of them are on the list, the Phil and Ted traveler and the Hauck (even if I own an old model). The Phil and Ted travel cot has been for us the best baby bed for travel. Having twins, for me the most important thing that determined the choice was the lightness and ease of transport (because obviously we have two). My husband can put one on each shoulder and without problems push the stroller and pull a trolley (while I follow empty-handed of course). On the other hand, it is perhaps the most time consuming model to assemble, but lightness and portability were more important to me. The two Phil & Teds have come with us on almost all the trips made with Liam and Santiago up to about three years: Japan, Egypt, Spain ,Turkey. During only the first 6 months we used our beloved Joolz Geo pram carrycot. Now they are just over 4 and we usually find accommodation that offers at least a sofa bed as option for them. The Hauck dream ‘n play we still use when we are visiting their grandfather. We don’t take them on the plane because they would be too bulky, but they are perfect for taking around for a short weekend in the car when we are in Italy. So to conclude, what should you ask yourself before choosing your best travel crib for travel? You should reflect on your style of travel first.

Different travel style, different sleeping solution

Discovering the backyard.

If you love to explore your country, travel by car, and your budget is limited, then the best travel baby bed is definitely the Hauck dream ‘n play . Without frills, it performs the necessary functions without draining your wallet.

Enjoying the outdoors

If you love the outdoor life, travel with the bare minimum, love cycling and camping, then you will surely appreciate the group of non-traditional travel cots. Starting from Bizzi Growin Pod Travel Cot as an infant portable bed and then moving on the super-practical Kidco PeaPod Plus Travel Bed or Littlelife Arc 2 lightweight travel cot .

Planning a round the world trip?

You are covered: Micralite sleep and go travel cot will accompany you everywhere. A model which is certainly not super cheap, but that you can use from birth, very quick to open and close, and practical to carry. If you prefer to focus on the lightness then go with the Phil & Teds and you will forget to have it on your shoulder! …and if you fear to fly with a baby, don’t miss our recommendation for the most carefree experience!

Weekend away?

If you like to jump on a plane even for a weekend away then the best options are the Guava Lotus travel crib or the practical Kidco PeaPod Plus Travel Bed or Littlelife Arc 2 lightweight travel cot . Not all airlines offer the possibility of boarding babygear for free, but with these models you should be safe to carry them as hand luggage (always check!)

Different type of travel cot for different ages

The last considerations to make are concerning the age of the child when you decide to purchase a travel cot.

Travel bed for baby

Many parents may skip this stage as many pushchair bassinets are approved for overnight sleeping. To decide what is the best infant travel bed for you, you will have to consider two options: take one that can be used from birth up to 3/4 years, or buy a small one for the first 6 months and then change it. If you decide for the second option, consider also these: many of the new travel cot models offer a practical bassinet that can be attached with a simple zip to the structure. It is very practical in the first months when you take out the babies from the cot very often. Many travel cots are deeper than you may have in the nursery at home since in many cases the mattress rests on the ground, so it is more difficult to reach your baby and your back could complain, If there is no bassinet, it is a good option to have at least one of the side panels that can be opened, so as to make access easier.

Toddler travel crib

If the first 6 months have gone, the choices expand. In this case one of the most interesting features to look for is the possibility of opening one of the side panels . The toddler age is the most difficult stage, and if you have a child who has difficulty sleeping, it can be useful to have the possibility to open the panel and lie down next to him. During the day the portable toddler crib can also simply become a playpen.

Top 6 Best Travel cots of 2022

travel cot with zip side

In need of a cozy and safe place for your baby to sleep when away from home? We've tested travel cots from brands such as Babybjorn and Bugaboo. For a travel cot to become best in test, it needs to be comfortable for the baby, easy and quick to fold up and down and preferably be able to accommodate children of different ages.

Top 9 Best Travel cots of 2022

How we did the test

Our tests are independently conducted and reflect the test editor's honest and objective opinions. Selection of products and test results are in no way influenced by manufacturers, retailers or other internal or external parties.

We carry out our tests ourselves and test all products as they are intended to be used in reality. In our test of travel cots, we asked normal families with small children from newborn up to preschool age to test different models of cot. They were used in summer homes, taken on car trips to visit relatives, travelled by train to ski resorts and went on holidays in the sun. The families and children then evaluated the travel cot – what it’s like to use both from the child and adult’s perspective. We also asked an expert in children’s products to provide their opinion on each travel cot.

Use: Is the cot comfortable for the child to sleep in, can the height of the sleeping surface be adjusted and is it easy for the parent to put the child into or remove them from the cot?

Transport and storage: How much space does the cot take up when unfolded and how neat is it when folded. Does it include a storage bag and is the cot light to carry?

Assembly: Is it easy to assemble the cot, how long does it take to unfold and are any instructions easy to understand?

As well as these aspects, each travel cot’s design and price have been taken into account. The final opinion has then formed the basis for giving the product a score and has determined which travel cot was named as best in test.

1. Stokke Cloud Sleeper - BEST CHOICE

Super compact travel cot in the form of a comfortable air mattress, suitable for children over 3 years of age

Price range: Premium Size when folded: 38 x 28 x 10 cm Size when raised: 150 x 75 x 17 cm Weight with storage bag: 1.4 kg Mattress: Included Mattress dimensions: 150 x 75 cm Adjustable base: No Max. weight: 68 kg Storage bag: Included Wash: TPU mattress: Wipe off dirt or stains with a wet cloth Mesh cover: machine washable at 30 degrees

travel cot with zip side

Stoke Cloud Sleeper doesn't belong anywhere but in the travel cot category, but it’s not like other travel cots on the market. A more correct name would perhaps be to call it a travel mattress. The Cloud Sleeper is an extremely compact air mattress, which can fit into a small backpack and be a comfortable sleeping place for larger children in no time.

Built-up edges ensure that your baby never rolls off

The Cloud Sleeper comes with an integrated pump, so no extra accessories are needed to get your baby’s bed ready. The bed can quickly be inflated by an adult, resulting in a soft and comfortable sleeping place. The Cloud Sleeper has raised sides to prevent your baby from rolling off the bed while sleeping. This is something that actually works, as children have never rolled off when sleeping – something which has happened several times on ordinary air mattresses.

The minimum recommended age is 3 years, but testing also shows that a 1.5 year-old slept comfortably and without discomfort. The Cloud Sleeper has a cover that breathes well, and the child does not feel cold or sweaty. And the mattress is impressively durable. After being inflated as instructed, the Cloud Sleeper could be used daily for one month without the need to add air.

Super smart travel cot that works in all positions

Besides the actual Cloud Sleeper, we did note something about the storage bag. The design is smart. Double zips allow the bed to be compressed for extra compactness after deflating. But after the first use, a large tear occured along the seam in the bag. It could still be used, but the fact that it got holes felt like a shame for an otherwise good and well thought-out product.

As a travel cot, the Cloud Sleeper is incredibly versatile. It works as an extra bed for a relative, to have at home when your child’s friends want to sleep over, to take with you on trips, or when camping. The fact is that the Cloud Sleeper works in all situations, is so small that it fits in a larger handbag, and gives the child a safe and good sleep. It’s hard to imagine how a travel cot could be more affordable and practical than the Stokke Cloud Sleeper.

2. Baby Björn Light

Airy and spacious travel cot that’s easy to fold and unfold

Price class: Premium Size, folded: 49 x 60 x 14 cm Size, unfolded: 82 x 112 x 64 cm Weight with storage bag: 6 kg Mattress: Included Mattress dimensions: 60 x 105 cm Adjustable bottom: No Maximum weight: No maximum weight Storage bag: Included Washable: Cot fabric: Machine wash 40 degrees Mattress cover: Machine wash 60 degrees

BabyBjörn BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

Baby Björn’s Light travel cot is one of the more expensive models on the market but it’s quickly clear that this is a quality product. The travel cot comes in a storage bag with simple carrying handles. The Baby Björn Light is small enough when folded to make the travel cot easy to handle, and easy to get in the car even with other baggage. As the name implies, it’s also light, weighing just 6 kg. The travel cot includes a mattress that you fasten in the bottom so it can’t slide about. You can buy special fitted sheets, but you can also use normal sheets. It’s pretty much impossible to fail at unfolding the cot, and folding it is easy too provided you’ve read the exhaustive instructions that come with it.

There’s nothing negative to say about comfort levels for the sleeping child. The mattress isn’t particularly thick, but it’s perfectly sufficient for a child to sleep on and the bed area is very spacious. Because the bottom is on the floor, there’s no upper weight limit. So as long as the child has space to sleep comfortably, you can use the Baby Björn Light as a travel cot or extra bed. The construction is so stable that even a child of around one year can lean against the edges for support while standing without there being any risk that the cot will tip over. It’s quite deep down to the bottom, which is a minus when you need to lay a small child or a sleeping child in the cot. But the Baby Björn Light is convenient in every other way, and in many ways this is the essence of the modern travel cot.

3. Bugaboo Stardust

High quality travel cot for young children in families that travel a lot

Price class: Premium Size, folded: 85 x 63 x 15 cm Size, unfolded: 98 x 63 x 85 cm Weight with storage bag: 8.5 kg Mattress: Included Mattress dimensions: 90 x 52 cm Adjustable bottom: Yes Maximum weight: Infant position: 9 kg Lower position: 15 kg or max. 89 cm long child Storage case: Included Washable: 30 degrees machine wash for all fabrics

Bugaboo Stardust Travel Cot

The classic, simple model of travel cot – as many parents already know – means a tough wrestling match every time you need to set it up or dismantle it. And it’s rare that you feel like a winner afterwards. So it’s nice that the characteristic that most stands out with the Bugaboo Stardust is that the cot is amazingly easy to handle.

Quick and easy folding

To unfold the travel cot, you undo two press studs on each side and pull apart. The cot is ready for your child to sleep in it in seconds. To fold the Stardust again, you press in the white buttons on the long sides of the cot and push the cot bottom upwards with your foot. The cot folds up square and flat, making it easy to pack into your car.

The Bugaboo Stardust’s cot bottom can be adjusted to two different heights. The higher, newborn, position places the baby at a very comfortable height from the parent's perspective. It’s a bit fiddly to get the bottom into newborn position, as the zip is in a corner where it’s difficult to reach. When you’re folding the cot in newborn position, the mattress must first be removed. In the lower height position, the mattress can stay in place when the Stardust is folded.

Maximum length reduces use time

The main disadvantage with the Bugaboo Stardust is the short period of use. The maximum weight of 15 kg is standard. However, the maximum length of the cot is 89 cm, which means your child will grow out of it at about two years of age. But much else about this travel cot is good. The mattress is soft and comfortable. All of the covers can be removed and washed in a washing machine. And the included storage case is sturdy and keeps the cot clean during trips.

When it comes to children, there’s never any guarantee of a good night's sleep. But the adjustable sleeping area height, together with good sleeping comfort and extremely convenient folding provide the best possible conditions. Although the cot is expensive, the Bugaboo Stardust can be considered as worth its price if you plan to spend many nights away from home during the first year with your baby.

4. Nuna Sena Aire

Versatile and sturdy travel cot with a good baby position, best suited as an extra cot

Price range: Premium Size when folded: 86 x 30 x 24 cm Size when raised: 103 x 76 x 73 cm Weight with storage bag: Approx. 13 kg Mattress: Included Mattress dimensions: 94 x 65 cm Adjustable base: Yes Max. weight: 15 kg Storage bag: Included Wash: Surface wash only

Nuna Sena Aire

Nuna Sena Aire is a foldable travel cot that can be used from newborn and up to 15 kg. The maximum height of the child is given as 86 cm, but the bed can accommodate much taller children than this. The mesh net on the sides of the bed allows the baby to look out, and allows air to circulate easily throughout the cot. The design is unusually pretty for a travel cot. Nuna Sena Aire is neutrally stylish and could be displayed in any room.

Super easy to set up and fold back together

The first thing that comes to mind is how easy it is to set up the Nuna Sena Aire. There is a good manual, but it is not needed – you instinctively understand how to do it. Folding it back together is just as easy. This means that you don't have to shy away from folding the Sena Aire together if, for example, you need more space in your bedroom or hotel room during the day.

A bassinet comes with the Sena Aire, for babies who can't roll or sit yet. It hangs on the edges of the bed and raises the bed base by 10 cm, making the total height 38 cm above the ground. This makes it more gentle on the parent’s back, when they need to put down or pick up their baby. As your baby grows, you can remove the bassinet to create an even larger sleeping area, which can comfortably fit children up to the age of 2-3.

Safe travel cot with a larger design

Sena Aire should be given extra praise for the safety of its structure. There are no unprotected parts where children or adults could get their fingers caught. The metal frame of the bed is padded along the entire inside, so that children cannot hurt themselves if they hit the walls of the bed. The included sheet is specially adapted for Sena Aire. The mattress’s velcro fastener is pulled through the sheet to ensure a perfect fit. It is also possible to make up the bed using a standard sheet; however, then the mattress cannot be attached to the bottom of the bed.

Considering the bed’s dimensions, both folded and unfolded, and how much it weighs, Sena Aire might be better suited as an extra bed in a summer cottage or at a relative's house if you often spend the night there. It is a bit heavy and clumsy to carry with you on a train journey, and takes up quite a lot of space in the car. But as a sleep space, Nuna Sena Aire is an excellent choice of travel cot for your child’s first few years.

5. BabyTrold

Classic travel cot with a twist in the form of a clever hatch for the child to crawl into the cot through

Price class: Budget Size, folded: 78 x 21 x 20 cm Size, unfolded: 125 x 65 x 77 cm Weight with storage bag: 9.1 kg Mattress: Yes Mattress dimensions: 118 x 58 cm Adjustable bottom: No Maximum weight: 15 kg Storage bag: Yes Wash: No information

BabyTrold Travel Cot with Opening

BabyTrold’s travel cot is a classic model that many parents will recognise, with a little twist in the form of a practical opening at the foot end of the cot. With a zip you can open up a hatch large enough for the child to be able to crawl in and out of the cot on their own. This is a function that was very popular with the children testing the cot. The BabyTrold travel cot comes in a storage bag that you can carry with you. But this isn’t a bag that you pop on your shoulder when you’re going to cycle over to a friend and want to put your baby down to sleep once you’re there, because it's relatively large when folded and above all rather heavy. This is more of an exemplary extra bed to have at home for visitors, or for a longer stay in a holiday home you get to by car.

The cot has two lockable wheels, so it’s easy to roll around indoors. On the outside of the head end is a storage pocket, which is the right size for an extra set of bedclothes. The mattress is quite thin but does have a layer of padding. You attach it to the bottom of the cot with Velcro straps to keep it in place. There are instructions for how to unfold the cot on the bottom of the cot, which is very useful. It isn’t difficult to unfold the BabyTrold travel cot, but it takes a few attempts before you understand the technique and do the steps in the right order. Folding it up is just the same. To get everything into the storage bag again you have to wind the mattress around the folded cot frame and fasten everything together with Velcro straps. This isn’t difficult but you have to pull on it so the joints come together in the right place. For use as a more long-term travel cot in a single place, the BabyTrold delivers exactly what you’d expect given the reasonable price tag.

BabyDan Guard Me Travel Cot

BabyDan’s travel cot is a classic model that’s been available under many different names. This type of travel cot is a very good alternative for anyone who wants a stable and spacious cot for as small a price tag as possible. Folding and unfolding work well when you’ve understood the order in which you should carry out the steps involved. The travel cot comes with clear instructions, and it’s a good idea to really get to know these as it’s easy to lose them over time. The travel cot has wheels on one end, which means you can lift it by the other and then easily roll it around. The wheels can be locked when the cot is in the right position. On the outside of the head end of the travel cot is a large storage pocket with an elasticated opening. This is useful for essentials or to put bedclothes in if you want to use the travel cot as a playpen during the day.

The long sides of the cot are made from mesh fabric, which lets in plenty of air to the sleeping child. The bed surface is comparable in size with a normal cot, and this together with the maximum weight of 15 kg means that BabyDan’s travel cot can usually be used up for children up to three years of age. The included mattress has thin padding but worked fine for our test children to sleep on Even though there are many similar models, BabyDan have been successful at getting the cot frame and mattress to fit together when the cot has to be packed in its storage case. The mattress has to be wound around the frame and fastened together with Velcro, and this works really well. The cot is manageable in size when it’s folded up. It weighs quite a bit, but you can carry it. Even though this travel cot doesn’t fold up really small or weigh as little as possible, you’ll undoubtedly be happy with the BabyDan travel cot.

All about Travel cots

A travel cot is a place for your child to sleep that’s easy to transport with you on your travels. If you choose between a cot or travel cot for everyday use, a cot is the most common choice. Traditional wooden cots are often more stable and have a design that fits better into the bedroom decor. But they are also both heavy and bulky, while a travel cot can more easily be folded into a compact package. There are a wide range of travel cots in many different models. Some of these are specially designed for infants, in that they're height adjustable so your baby is higher up. With others you can attach a changing table to the travel cot to get a good working height for changing nappies. And other travel cots for babies are about the same size as a cradle and have their own stand. These smaller travel cots designed with babies in mind have a shorter period of use and lower maximum weight. Many parents also wonder whether to use a buggy or travel cot on holiday. The advantage of a travel cot is that the child gets a larger area to move around in their sleep. And many carrycots aren’t approved for use as an overnight sleeping place. If the child is using a stroller seat unit, you also need to make sure they are wearing a harness for safety reasons, and a travel cot with a soft mattress can offer much better comfort for sleeping.

For larger children it’s important that the travel cot has a high maximum weight and plenty of space. It can also be useful if the travel cot has an opening or a removable side so you don’t always have to lift your child in and out of it. The length of time you can use a travel cot varies, but many of the classic models work up to at least three or four years of age. If you have twins, while the children are small you can let them share the same travel cot, either lying side-by-side or top and tail with a blanket each. Most travel cots include a mattress. But these are often quite thin. If you want to make the bed softer, mattresses for normal cots often work just as well in the larger model travel cots.

Folding and unfolding a travel cot isn’t always very easy, so you need to check that this is a straightforward process before buying. Some of them fold in several different stages, while other, pop-up travel cots can be unfolded in no time at all. There are two factors that are particularly important from a transport viewpoint. The travel cot must be light enough for you to be able to carry it with you. And it should take up as little space as possible when folded so that you can fit it into the car or on the train as baggage. There are even travel cots that fold up so small that you can take them on board a plane as hand baggage. If you’re going to be travelling with your own travel cot, as well as the size of the cot it’s also important to ensure that there’s a good storage case to pack it in.

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

I love how easy the folding mechanism is, how thick the mattress feels, and the ability to use it as a playpen. Spencer Hart

The Sleep&Go Travel Cot is a well-designed piece of kit that hopes to make travelling with little ones a breeze. It sets itself apart from rivals by being adaptable: it's a travel cot one minute, playpen the next, and can even transform into a newborn co-sleeper. Perhaps best of all, it's able to transform between these functions in seconds thanks to its innovative all-in-one frame.

The Sleep&Go Travel Cot is created by Micralite, a sister brand of Silver Cross, that prides itself on putting functionality at its core. The brand's products are designed to go anywhere, with light and compact designs making them easy to use.

As an avid traveller, I couldn't wait to review Micralite's Sleep&Go Travel Cot, which folds up in seconds and comes with its own carry case.

With an RRP of £150, it sits firmly in the upper-mid-range price category, with durable materials and a solid build, but does it deserve a place in T3's best travel cot guide? Read on to find out…

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Setup

The Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is, minus removing a few plastic bags, ready to use straight out of the box. Even as a relative newbie I was able to set the cot up in a matter of seconds.

This is mainly down to the all-in-one frame, which you simply remove from the zip-up travel bag, unfold lengthways, and then bring out the legs until you hear a satisfying click.

There is no screwing involved and no tent poles to connect – everything is already attached to the frame. I found that really useful, as it means you can't lose anything. Also, the last thing you want to be doing after a long day of travelling is read an instruction manual and figure out if you should be using a B1 bolt or B2. Thankfully the Sleep&Go is as idiot-proof as they come.

Things get a little more fiddly when it comes to the newborn insert, as this requires you to line up a zip and attach the mattress with four toggles. Even then, it doesn't take long, and you can have the whole thing put together in as little as two minutes.

The instructions are a series of images that are easy to follow, though, in practice, I doubt you'll need them.

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Design

As I stated at the beginning of this review, Micralite's designs are functional and durable – that can clearly be seen with the Sleep&Go Travel Cot.

The carry bag is very no-nonsense. It's made from a thick, black fabric that won't damage or mark. It's not the most luxe material out there, but it is clearly very durable.

The bag is big enough that getting everything back into it (the frame, newborn insert, and mattress) isn't a problem.

When folded the Sleep&Go measures 88 x 34 x 17cm, so it's not the most compact model on the market. Essentially you're trading absolute compactness for ease of use.

At 6.25kg, this travel cot isn't too heavy, although it's not the lightest model out there either. I found the large handles on the bag make it easy to carry, although I would appreciate some padding on the handles if I was carrying it for a long time.

Obviously, we've already touched on the main part of the design in the previous section – the quick and easy all-in-one folding frame.

Once unfolded the travel cot measures 112cm x 80cm x 67cm, which is a decent size and larger than many of its premium rivals. It's certified for overnight sleeping, so you can rest safe in the knowledge that your baby is safe.

The mattress is surprisingly thick at 3cm, although it does feel on the firm side.

It's covered in wipe-clean polyester, as is the frame around the top of the cot. This fabric feels thick and durable. It's worth noting, however, that the fabrics can't be machine washed, so you'll have to stick to spot cleaning.

I really like that one of the sides unzips. This turns it into useful storage if you're using the newborn insert or a playpen if you've got a toddler.

My main complaint about the design is that the Sleep&Go is only available in this graphite/black colourway. While this is practical, it would have been nice to see some brighter colour options here.

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Use

Okay, so if you've got this far then you know the Sleep&Go Travel Cot is easy to assemble, but what is it like to actually use?

I found the newborn insert the perfect height and size, making it easy to put a little one in (and lift them out again). It feels sturdy and features mesh panels so you can see your baby from the side if the cot is next to your bed.

As a travel cot, it's perfect.

I wouldn't really recommend it as a full-time co-sleeper though, as it doesn't feature a fold-down panel and the angled shape means it won't fit right up against a bed.

When it comes to folding the Sleep&Go down again, it's a little more tricky than putting it up, with some small buttons on each corner that collapse the legs. It takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you've done it a few times you'll be able to have the cot folded and in the bag within five minutes – which is very useful if you're rushing to the airport for your return flight.

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Verdict

The Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is no doubt a quality product. It's versatile, easy to use, and durable enough to withstand everything travel can throw at it. I love how easy the folding mechanism is, and how thick the mattress feels. I also think the ability to use it as a playpen (or extra storage) is incredibly useful. I do wish it was available in brighter colours, and that it was a little easier to clean, but if you're looking for a highly-functional travel cot that will withstand many years of family trips – the Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is an excellent choice.

Travel Cot with Zip Down Side?

JessieLou15 · 12/11/2021 15:47

Blush

We have a Phil and teds one that has a zip side. I’ve never used it though, in fact I’ve always thought it was a daft feature but clearly I was wrong and it does have a use! But I can say that it’s a decent compact travel cot.

I have a Guava Lotus travel crib, it has a zip on one side.

Portacot Vs Standard Cot

best portacot

What is a portacot? A portacot (also referred to as a travel cot or a folding baby cot) is a temporary place for a baby to sleep when a standard cot is not available. Portacots usually have fabric or mesh sides, a removable mattress and can easily be folded up so it can be taken to various places.

The best thing about a portacot is how portable they are. Portacots are lightweight and compact when disassembled making them super easy to transport around so your baby has somewhere safe, comfortable and familiar to sleep no matter where you are.

However these advantages of a portacot are also their disadvantages. Portacots are not as sturdy as a standard cot and so carry some risk (which is why it is vital you purchase a cot that meets the Australian standards, see below for more information).

Usually portacots are much lower to the ground making it more difficult for parents to put baby in as well as take baby out – worth considering when looking to buy portable cot options.

Types of Portacot

Big/standard-sized portacots.

The most commonly used portacot is a large, standard sized portacot. As the name suggests, a standard sized portacot tends to be reasonably bulky and weighs substantially more than a portacot designed specifically as a baby or toddler travel cot.

Standard sized portacots often include additional features such as a bassinet or a change table, often referred to as a 2 in 1 or a 3 in 1 portacot.

A standard sized portacot is better suited for quick trips, where space is not an issue, for example a sleepover at grandma’s, or a short weekend away.

We also used our standard sized portacot as an additional place for our daughter to sleep during the day so she could stay downstairs in the living room with me.

Travel Cots

Travel cots are much more compact and lightweight than a standard sized portacot, making them perfect for road trips or when travelling by plane. A light weight travel cot can weigh as little as 4kg or less!

In order to be compact and light, travel cots don’t usually have additional features such as a change table. They also tend to be smaller so they may not last your child for as long.

What To Consider When Looking For The Best Portacots 2023

Portacots come in many shapes and sizes and with a range of features. Before purchasing a portacot, give consideration to the following features to ensure you purchase the perfect portacot to meet your individual needs.

travel cot with zip side

The main point of a portacot is to be portable, so your baby will have somewhere to sleep wherever you are. To be portable, you want to purchase one of the compact portacot Australia has for sale, so that when folded up the portacot is nice and compact but also big enough for your child to comfortably sleep and move around freely once assembled.

As you can see from the comparison chart above, portacots vary greatly in how much they weigh. If you are simply looking to buy a portacot to take on the odd visit to Grandma’s or a friend’s house, the weight of your portacot may not be as important as it would be should you be looking for a portacot that you can be on the move with regularly.

If you are planning on travelling with your portacot by plane of a road trip, look for a super lightweight portacot.

Quick Assembly, Disassembly & Storage

You don’t want to reach your destination only to spend 30 minutes assembling your portacot while you have a cranky crying baby on your hands. Be sure to look at portacots that are known for being easy to set up as well as pack up.

You can get one of the pop up travel cots Australia has available which takes seconds to assemble. Our travel cot reviews Australia will confirm whether a portacot is easy to assemble.

If you are planning on travelling regularly with your portacot you also want to ensure it doesn’t take up too much room to stores away.

travel cot with zip side

Before purchasing a portacot, double check that it comes with everything you need, or if it doesn’t, how easy it is to purchase whatever it is you require.

Does the portacot come with a mattress or is this an additional purchase? Is the mattress inflatable and is the travel cot with good mattress? Does it come with sheets? Can you use standard cot sheets with the portacot or do you need to purchase specially designed sheets?

Don’t just assume that your portacot will include everything you need.

Colour and Design

Like all baby products, portacots come in a range of colours and designs. You may like to purchase a portacot in your child’s favourite colour or with your child’s favourite characters.

If you want to me more practical, I recommend you purchase a portacot in a neutral colour so it can easily be passed down to younger siblings or sold.

Other Special Features

There are a range of additional features that portacots may include. Features may include a portable changer, a bassinet, sleeping pod / rocker and wheels.

Usually the more features, the heavier the portacot and the less portable it becomes. So be sure these additional features are necessary before you purchase a portacot with all the bells and whistles.

Safety Features To Look For In The Best Portable Cot Australia 2023

travel cot with zip side

The most important thing when purchasing a portacot is that it is safe for your child. A poor quality or cheap travel cot can carry the risk of sleeping accidents such as child suffocation or a child becoming trapped. When it comes to portacot safety consider the following:

  • Certified –  All portable cots Australia wide must meet the mandatory Australian Standard AS/NZS 2195. To ensure you are purchasing one of the safest portacots Australia has, make sure the portacot has a product label clearly stating that it has passed and exceeds the Australian standards. For more information check out the Product Safety Australia’s product safety guidelines and standards .
  • Durable and sturdy –  The best portacots are high quality and made with well designed materials. Ensure the portacot you purchase has a secure locking mechanism to ensure it won’t collapse as well as being free from any safety hazards such as bumps, sharp edges or protruding parts that could injure your child.
  • Good ventilation –  The best portacots provide good ventilation for your child to avoid suffocation. This is why you will note that most portacots are the mesh type as this reduces the risk to your child.
  • Perfect fit mattress/sheets –  It is important that you only use the mattress supplied or specifically designed to go with the portacot to ensure that it is well fitted and suited to that particular portacot. The mattress must be firm and fit snugly without any gaps between the mattress and portacot. This ensures the baby is not trapped between these gaps. Never add an additional mattress to the portacot or additional padding.
  • Removable accessories –  Check to ensure that all of the accessories, such as bassinet inserts and changing tables can be removed from the portacot when not in use to avoid entanglement and other risks to the child.

This 3 in 1 portacot includes a bassinet for newborn babies, a changing table and can be used as a play centre/cot. Once your baby has reached an appropriate size, simply insert the supplied mattress in the lower level of the full size cot. Are you looking for a portacot? If so, then this buyers guide is the perfect place to start.

We will discuss what potential buyers should consider before buying a portacot and also provide questions that buyers should ask before making their purchase decision.

With our help, you will be sure to find the best possible product for your needs!

What age is the portacot suitable for?

It’s important to consider how long you think you’ll be using the portacot. Portacots are suitable for a variety of different ages.

If you’re thinking of using it for a young child, then you’ll want to make sure that the portacot has been safety tested and is suitable for your child’s age

Similarly, if you’re hoping to use it as your child grows up, you’ll want to make sure you get a portacot that can accommodate older children as well.

What are the dimensions of the portacot?

One of the most important things to consider when buying a portacot is how much space you have available.

A portacot needs to be able to fit into your car as well as through any doors and up staircases that you may need to move it around.

It’s also worth considering whether or not there are tight corners in areas where you plan on using the portacot. This will help determine what size would suit your needs best!

How easy is it to set up and break down the portacot?

Another thing potential buyers should think about is how quickly they can pack up their new purchase and get going again if needed.

Some people like having a quick way of packing their equipment, while others prefer a portacot that can be packed away and reassembled without too much hassle.

What features should you look for?

Some additional features to consider include wheels, storage pockets, mosquito nets, or even a built-in sunshade cover!

Each of these features can make your life a little bit easier, and it’s important to decide which ones you think are essential for your needs.

Do you want to use the portacot for more than just sleeping?

It’s important to think about whether or not you want a portacot that can also be used for other purposes.

Some portacots have the ability to attach toys and light-up features which will help keep your little one entertained!

How easy is the portacot to clean?

Another important thing to consider is how easy the portacot will be for you to clean.

For example, some portacots have removable covers that can simply be thrown into a washing machine when they need cleaning!

Portacot FAQs

How long can you use a portacot.

As long as required. They are designed to be used for a certain amount of time and there is no set length of time that they can be used for.

Is a portacot suitable from birth?

Yes, most models will support infants under 15 pounds or less than five months old.

What age should you stop using a portacot?

It depends on how often your child uses it but by around two years old, children don’t usually need this type of sleep option anymore due to increased mobility during their patterns. You could continue if necessary, however.

Can a portacot be used in your bed?

No, this is not recommended as it can lead to accidents or injury if you roll on top of the baby. They should always have their own cot within sight while sleeping and for safety reasons they shouldn’t sleep in adult beds either so keep that separate from an adults bed.

What are some common mistakes parents make when using a portacot?

There are many things that people do wrong but some of them include trying to put too much weight onto the mattress which ends up being very uncomfortable for babies resulting in discomfort leading to upset behaviour during naps/sleep times etc.

Another mistake is leaving infants unattended inside without supervision, children under 12 months old should always be supervised when using a portacot.

The Best Travel Cots buying guide and FAQ

What is the best cot to buy.

Choosing the best travel cot from so many fantastic options was difficult. We considered several factors to help us make our decision, including the design, the ease of transport and assembly, and the mattress. The clear winner for us was the Maxi-Cosi Iris 2-in-1 Compact Travel Cot.

Not only is this one of the best travel cots for babies it can also be adapted as your child grows. The cot is simple to use and folds compactly into a useful traveling bag. It is also super lightweight – a huge bonus for parents traveling with multiple bags and suitcases.

The elegant colours and wooden frame make this cot stylish and luxurious.

One of the stand-out features of this travel cot is the mattress. At 4cm thick, it is comfortable and will make your child feel like they are sleeping in their bassinet at home.

What Makes the Best Portable Cot?

Deciding what makes the best travel cot depends on what is important to you. Different families have different uses and needs for their cot so what is important to one family may be less important to another.

Portables cots are used more frequently by some families than others. Some families use them in the same location every time, whereas others use them only for travel purposes. Below are some of the most popular things people look for when choosing a portable cot.

Pack down Speed:

If you plan to use your portable cot when traveling or when your child visits family, a cot that is easy to take down and quick to pack away may be the best option for you. Many travel cots come with an easy-fold design that enables the cot to be packed away in seconds.

If your baby is going to be using the cot frequently and sleeping in there overnight, comfort is likely to be one of your top priorities. Many of the best travel cots come with a mattress for a more comfortable sleep. Some do not have a mattress but instead have a padded base. Although these can also be comfortable, you need to decide what you prefer for your baby.

Can it be used as a playpen?:

A travel cot that doubles as a playpen is preferable for many parents. The opportunity to use the cot for sleeping and play can make life much easier for parents who are traveling. A cot that can be used as a playpen should be larger than average and have a soft and comfortable base. Some of the more popular options will also come with additional features such as a zip-down side and toy basket.

There are several things to consider in regards to material. Firstly, you want to make sure the material is designed to be kind to your baby’s skin and contains no hazardous materials or chemicals. You may also want to consider whether the material is machine washable or wipe clean.

The weight of travel cots can vary greatly. The weight should be stated in the product description so always consult this beforehand. Generally, the weight of a travel cot will be between 6kg-8kg.

Things to consider when buying a travel cot

Portability:.

If you plan to travel on public transport or by aeroplane, you may want to make sure that your travel cot is portable. Many cots are small enough and light enough to carry easily and these are the best option for many parents.

It is also possible to purchase travel cots that come with a bag that has a shoulder strap or carrying handle for increased portability.

You may also want to consider a travel cot that is easy to move around once it is assembled. You can consider having wheels underneath the travel cot. Lightweight cots with wheels are easy to move from room to room, meaning you don’t have to take it down and reassemble it every time you want to use it.

How to Clean:

Choosing a travel cot that is easy to clean can be a lifesaver for many parents. We all know how messy children can be! Look for a cot that has a removable frame cover and a removable mattress cover for the easiest clean.

Additional Features:

There are several additional features to consider when buying a travel cot. These include a changing table, a nightlight, a rocking feature, a detachable side for co-sleeping, a side that zips down, a toy basket, or hanging toys – there are so many features to consider! Think about what is important to you and your baby and which of the features you are most likely to use.

Are Travel Cots Worth it?

Deciding whether a travel cot is worth it really depends on your lifestyle and how much you are likely to use it. Many parents find them worthwhile because, not only can they be used as a bassinet, many of them can also double up as a playpen.

Some travel cots can be pricy, and although they are more likely to be made from luxurious materials, have a stylish look and come with additional features, if you are not likely to use the cot often, you could always invest in one of the best budget cots. These are relatively low in price but are still functional for your baby.

What Age Can a Baby Sleep in a Travel Cot?

The answer to this question varies with each travel cot. Some cots are suitable for newborns and have a detachable bassinet that can be taken out as your baby grows. Some are only appropriate from 6 months of age but can last until your child is three or four years of age.

Some are only suitable for a younger baby and cannot be used once your baby has exceeded a particular weight or length. Consult the product description or manual carefully to ensure that the cot is the correct size for your child.

Are Travel Cots Safe?

This is a question we hear often. Let’s face it, the safety of our children is always paramount.

All cots in the U.K. must meet the European Safety Standards. This means a cot cannot be sold to you unless it is fully compliant with safety rules .

However, as with any cot, you should make sure that you are following safe sleeping practices. Use the original mattress that comes with the cot. If you are required to buy the mattress separately, always choose one that is recommended by the manufacturer or fits exactly with the size specifications.

Additionally, ensure you use a fitted sheet and that there is no loose material that can find its way onto your baby’s face.

How to Get Your Baby Used to a Travel Cot

Going on a trip to find that your baby doesn’t like sleeping in their travel cot can be a disaster for many parents. As a matter of fact, it is more likely that your baby is confused by the change in their sleeping arrangements and isn’t used to sleeping in a different bassinet.

To help your baby get used to their travel cot , you should put your baby into the cot to sleep for a few nights before your trip. This gives them a chance to test out the cot and you’re likely to find that they like it just as much as they like their cot at home.

Having a familiar sleeping area that they like being in will also make it much easier for your baby to adapt to their new environment – making the trip much less stressful for you and your child.
