Safari Vehicles – Everything You Need to Know About Cars for the Bush

Matt Davison

Safari vehicles come in all shapes and sizes and offer different ways to experience the African bush. The car is something that you would probably overlook when choosing one for your safari, but it can be the pivotal factor in how you experience your safari.

From the safari enthusiast who knows nothing about cars to the weekend explorer who has the 4×4 with all the extras you can imagine, this is a guide on everything you need to know.  It breaks down what to expect from the safari vehicles you will be using when going on your first safari trip.

If you haven’t quite got as far as booking your first trip, then this guide to the best safaris in Africa for first-timers is the perfect starting point.

What is a Safari Vehicle?

You might be asking yourself what African safari cars are and why they matter? In general, they are large 4×4 vehicles that have been modified to ensure the passengers’ safety. It is worth remembering that the regulations about the vehicles differ from national parks to private reserves and from province to province.

Big, small, open, or closed — there are a few different types of vehicles for safaris that the different national parks use. The vehicle should suit your needs or what you want to get out of the safari.

Unfortunately, you don’t always have a choice when it comes to what safari cars are available. So here is everything that you need to know to help prepare you for what to expect and how to choose what vehicle is best for you on safari.

If you are more of the adventurous type and would rather rent your own vehicle, this will also help you in understanding what vehicle would be best. All safari vehicles should at least have some, if not all of these features:

  • Snorkel to handle deep water
  • Upgraded suspension for extra comfort and durability
  • Upgraded wheels and tires suited to the terrain

African Safari Vehicles

When it comes to an African safari car, there are a number of different types of vehicles that could be used on your drive. Most safaris however will be in a 4×4 safari where the terrain requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle to pass through. But there are other routes that will allow you to travel in a much larger group in more comfort, such as in a sprinter van on a hardpack road.

Some National Park’s offer a pickup service for a private tour where the guide will pick you up in the safari vehicle, with the canvas sides closed. They will then open the sides once you start your safari. You wouldn’t exactly want to be in an open vehicle driving along the freeway but on the game drive, it is perfect. A closed vehicle would be more comfortable in that scenario but not as good on the game drive itself with limited viewing available.

The two most common vehicles used are either safari Jeeps or Toyota safari vehicles. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages but are some of the best for the job.

Toyota Safari Vehicles

The legendary and most reliable of them all, most game parks use Toyota Land Cruisers as their vehicle of choice. Having replaced the trusty Land Rover Defender and the African safari Jeep a few decades ago, Toyota changed the game forever.

There are both enclosed and open Toyota safari vehicles, depending on the location and guidelines of the park. Fully open vehicles provide unrestricted views of the world around you, perfect for the photographers who want to get that perfect shot. An open vehicle has no doors, windows, or frames to block your view. You also have the ability to listen and talk to your guide, ensuring that you don’t miss a thing and know what is going on at all times.

The closed version offers more protection from the elements on those colder and wetter days. The downside, though, is that your view is more restricted and you have to look through windows. This isn’t ideal for those wanting to take photographs but perfect for those who want a comfortable experience.

Safari Trucks

If you really want to go off the grid and live in the bush, then a safari truck is the answer. These beasts are normally caravans on wheels with either 4×4 or 6×6 capabilities and can live in the middle of nowhere for weeks on end. Other safari trucks that are used are normal vans, such as a sprinter van. These will take you and a group of your friends in amazing comfort on more maintained and established tracks.

Types of Safari

The type of safari that you choose to do will have an impact on the type of safari vehicle that will be available to you. Not only that but the location of your safari will also be a factor in what vehicle is available.

Kenya and Tanzania prefer to use fully enclosed vehicles with their passengers but with the added modification of an expanding or opening roof. This means that if you get tired of looking through the window with limited visibility, you can stand for an uninterrupted view. The roof is then closed once the safari is over. This is different in South Africa where mostly open-air vehicles are used for a much better experience.

Guided Game Drive

The most popular of the safari options are the guided game drives on private game reserves and National Parks. These are the go-to for anyone who is visiting a game reserve.

The professional guides will either use an open or enclosed vehicle depending on their rules and preference. If you visit during the summertime, don’t forget a hat to protect you from the sun. If you brave the winter months then layer up as it can get really cold in the bush at all times, especially when the sun goes down.

If you are wanting the full open vehicle experience then this short afternoon safari in the Kruger is a beautiful and quick excursion into the African landscape. Don’t forget to wear a solid pair of boots and clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty as well, as you can expect a lot of mud and dust.

Self-Drive Safaris

For the mavericks and explorers among us, the self-drive safari is one of the top bucket list adventures. Renting or taking your own vehicle through a national park and going at your own pace to explore the landscape is the perfect option. It is possible to do a self-drive safari in any car with plenty of accommodation options in National Parks. For the ultimate experience, you’d want a 4×4 with all the bells and whistles.

Different Safari Cars for a Different Experience

Now that you know that a safari car isn’t just a car and that they are different, you will be able to choose the perfect safari to suit your needs. If you are wanting a photographic excursion into the wild then an open safari car is the best.

If you want to feel a little more protected then an enclosed vehicle is your car of choice. If you are planning a trip to Africa or Kenya in particular, then this guide on all you need to know about safaris in Kenya will help plan your trip.

Why not give this 3-day safari adventure in Nairobi a try? It is a beautiful drive into the Kenyan landscape.

Don’t forget to dress appropriately for the car that you will be driving in and enjoy every moment of your safari.

2023 Tata Safari review - a new chapter in Tata's SUV evolution

Tata Motors has been making significant strides in reshaping its SUV lineup. They recently introduced thoroughly refreshed models of the Nexon and Nexon EV, and the eagerly-anticipated Punch EV seems to be just around the corner. What is creating headlines of them at the moment though is the flagship Safari and its 5-seater counterpart, the Harrier - both of which have been updated significantly. We have a detailed review of the Harrier , too, but now we delve into the new 2023 Tata Safari 's most striking features, starting with its design.

toyota safari looking suv

The 2023 Tata Safari introduces a range of exciting design updates. Most notably, a large grille with a single-piece design sets it apart from the Harrier, giving it an imposing stance. Subtle 'Safari' branding on the doors with an updated logo adds a touch of class to the SUV.

One design element that particularly caught our eye is the stunning 19-inch wheels. Their two-tone finish and intricate hexagon centre design not only look fantastic but also injects a sporty element into the overall design. Regrettably, these wheels are not transferrable to the older Hexa, but they can be retrofitted on both old and new Harrier models.

toyota safari looking suv

The straight lines on the bodywork emphasise the Safari's upright stance and length, clearly distinguishing it from the Harrier. Even the grille protrudes forward a bit more, adding to its upright fascia. The tie-pin-like Safari badging in the headlights adds a touch of sophistication.

toyota safari looking suv

The front end is dominated by a full-width LED strip, vertically stacked headlamps, and two-pot fog lamps, creating a commanding presence. The startup animation for the headlights and taillights further enhances the premium appeal. Moving to the rear, the design strikes a perfect balance between sophistication and ruggedness, with horizontal lines and vertical sculptural elements. Notably, there's a distinctive light signature that sets it apart from the Harrier.

One standout feature is the use of hot foiling technology in the grille, a first in the segment, which adds an extra layer of sophistication and establishes a stronger visual connection with the Land Rovers.

toyota safari looking suv

Stepping inside the 2023 Tata Safari, you'll be further impressed. The cabin retains its spaciousness, but now, there are pinstripes in the inlay panels, reminiscent of luxury cars. While these pinstripes provide a nice touch, it's worth noting that they are printed and not actual metal veins.

toyota safari looking suv

The cabin is loaded with screens, featuring a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and even a tiny screen for the terrain mode selector, akin to a smartwatch. These screens are controlled by a new standalone processing unit, ensuring smooth performance and a more intuitive user interface. Soft-touch materials throughout the cabin add to the premium feel. Electronic touch controls for the air conditioning and a four-spoke phygital steering wheel with an illuminated logo make it clear that this is a high-tech cockpit, though some switches and plastic touchpoints in less common areas still feel somewhat basic.

toyota safari looking suv

However, there are a few downsides to consider. Glossy surfaces in the cabin are visually appealing but prone to scratches. Some of the controls, like the stalks behind the wheel, can be a bit of a reach, which might be inconvenient while driving. In the instrumentation, there's no MAP view for Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, only Apple Maps. The suede panels around the windows tend to accumulate dust, and the large wing mirrors create wind noise and affect cornering visibility. The shift-by-wire gear selector in the automatic variant, while a step forward, could be smoother. These are personal nitpicks and may vary from one person to another.

toyota safari looking suv

Tata has placed a strong emphasis on safety, offering six standard airbags, with a seventh available in top trims. The inclusion of features like 'Boss Mode' for the rear left passenger adds convenience, and various exterior and interior trim combinations known as Personas allow for a somewhat personalised experience while making colour and upholstery choices.

toyota safari looking suv

The lighter upholstery option may soil easily, so keep that in mind. On the tech front, the integration of Alexa Car2Home is a welcome addition. If you have compatible Alexa devices at home, you can use voice commands to control various home functions, adding convenience to your daily routine - like starting the coffee machine, switching the home lights or air conditioning etc as you are arriving home.

toyota safari looking suv

Connectivity is a strong suit then, and you also get voice-controlled dual-zone automatic climate control. However, it's worth noting that there are no individual microphones to detect driver and passenger commands, so you'll need to specify whom you're addressing. Rear window blinds and ventilated seats in the second row create a comfortable atmosphere. Ambient lighting extends to the panoramic roof too, which can be opened using voice commands, offering a convenient experience much like the competition. Additionally, the JBL audio system is upgraded with a tenth speaker placed on the dashboard. There are 13 audio modes, including one that activates only the front speakers, perfect for keeping the rear passengers undisturbed.

toyota safari looking suv

Driving Dynamics

In terms of driving dynamics, too, the 2023 Tata Safari has made some strides. New driving modes affect the weight of the Electronic Power Steering, addressing past concerns about the heavy steering feel with the hydraulic setup. Sport mode continues to provide the weighted feel, while Comfort or Eco modes make the steering significantly lighter and more convenient for daily chores.

toyota safari looking suv

The Sport mode enhances throttle and engine response too, making it especially useful on mountain roads and inclines, even for non-enthusiasts. The introduction of three terrain modes - Normal, Wet, and Rough - allows for adaptability in various driving conditions. Although the Safari is front-wheel drive and lacks all-wheel-drive options, the tire choices and suspension setup mitigate the need for frequent traction control interventions. Most mild off-road trails can be tackled in Normal mode itself.

toyota safari looking suv

The safety features are well-rounded, including ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and the addition of Adaptive Cruise Control that adjusts speed to match the vehicle in front, with a 3-second acceleration delay built in to anticipate unexpected obstacles. In panic situations, the vehicle uses automatic emergency braking and includes features such as pre-brake fill. Even in non-emergency braking, the Safari activates hazard lights when the rear radars detect a tailgating vehicle. Some features like Lane Keep Assist, are expected to be added to the production model.

Powertrain Performance

As before, the Safari continues to use the Fiat-sourced 170PS diesel engine, which is inherently a bit noisy and unrefined, but there are no pedal vibrations to complain about. It delivers a decent performance with a punchy midrange. There's some turbo-lag, but it's manageable and the crisp response of the Sport mode shadows that shortcoming.

toyota safari looking suv

The Hyundai-sourced automatic transmission now comes with a shift-by-wire as mentioned and you also get paddle shifters, marginally improving the driving experience. It's not the quickest, but the shift times are respectable.

Aerodynamic efficiency is improved in the updated exterior design, with wind curtains near the headlights contributing to slight gains in overall fuel economy, but we will verify that later with a road test.

toyota safari looking suv

Suspension tweaks ensure that ride quality remains excellent despite the large wheels. The handling is quite good too for such a large car and the aforementioned Electronic Power Steering helps shrink the perception of the car's size.

In conclusion, the 2023 Tata Safari is a compelling SUV. With its refreshed design, impressive features, and a strong safety package, it marks a significant step forward for Tata Motors. While the front-wheel-drive configuration and the absence of an all-wheel-drive option may not cater to Safari purists, the new Safari distinguishes itself with its rich feature set, connectivity options, and striking design, tailored to meet market demands.

  • Toyota New SUV To Have “Mini” Land Cruiser Traits; Launch In 2025-26

Toyota New SUV To Have “Mini” Land Cruiser Traits; Launch In 2025-26 | V3Cars

  • 02 October 2023
  • By Mahesh Yadav

According to Reuters, Toyota are looking to expand their production capacity in India by adding another plant. The source with knowledge of the matter informed Reuters that the plant will have an initial production capacity of 80,000 - 1,20,000 units per year. This capacity will ramp up to 2 lakh units per year over the next few years once the plant becomes operational.

Toyota “Mini” Land Cruiser

For this plant, they are planning an India-specific SUV, which will sit between the Hyryder and the Hycross. They see a gap in their portfolio between these cars where the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 continue to churn good numbers month over month. Given their close relationship with Maruti Suzuki, we should also expect a Maruti version of this SUV to land in the Nexa dealerships.

Launch Timeline

The report suggests that the new SUV could go on sale sometime in early 2026. That’s a long time to keep the so-called gap open between the Hyryder and Hycross. Even carmakers working on brand new EV technology have shorter launch timelines. I’d expect the SUV to go on sale sometime in 2025, which is enough time to develop an internal combustion car. Launching it sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2025 will also help them capitalise on the high demand during the festive season.

“Mini” Land Cruiser

The source also informed Reuters that Toyota are planning to bring a “mini” Land Cruiser. The “maxi” Land Cruiser currently costs Rs. 2.10 crore (ex-showroom). The LC isn’t an epitome of luxury for a multi-crore car. It isn’t immensely capable than other cars in this price range either. Hell, it doesn’t even wear a luxury car badge like Lexus. For a car wearing the same badge on its nose as an Etios and costing Rs. 2.10 crore (ex-showroom), it’s mind boggling to see it commanding so much respect and getting a good number of buyers too.

Those who buy it do so for its rock solid reliability, thanks to its mechanical simplicity. If Toyota can infuse similar design and go-anywhere abilities in their upcoming SUV, then it should have enough ammunition to challenge the Safari and XUV700’s dominance.

Toyota New SUV Expected Price

There are still 2 or more years to go for the launch of this rumoured Toyota SUV. Between now and then, we’ll witness some inflation. By then, the Hycross will have moved up a bit on the price scale to make room for the new SUV. With that in mind, we should expect this ‘mini’ Land Cruiser to start at just under Rs. 20.0 lakh.

Top 7 new tech highlights of the 2023 Tata Safari

- Prices to be announced tomorrow

- Segment-first features included

Tata Motors will announce the price of the Safari facelift tomorrow. We had a first-hand experience with the new tech on this SUV during our first-drive review. Let's take a quick look at the top seven new tech appeals on this latest iteration of the Safari.

1. Terrain mode selector with TFT screen

The older Safari had a jewelled knob for the terrain mode selector, but now it comes with a TFT screen displaying the different drive modes.

2. New TFT cluster with maps

Fully digital instrument clusters on cars aren't a novelty anymore. However, the one on the Safari shows a complete view of the maps. This is a first-in-segment feature that proved to be very handy during our drive and will surely be appreciated by owners.

3. Four types of voice commands

Voice commands may have made us lazy, but they do add to the overall convenience. The audio package in the Safari comes paired with Alexa, in addition to the native in-built voice commands, Siri, and Google commands.

4. Ventilated second-row seats

We all know how ventilated seats add to the comfort in a hot and humid climate like ours. The Safari owners can boast about ventilated seats not only in the first row but the second row as well.

5. Powered tailgate opening

The carmaker has equipped the SUV with a powered tailgate, with six levels of adjustable opening height. This is convenient for users of different heights. Moreover, it gets four access options, including the key (remote option), dashboard button, and exterior and interior buttons on the tailgate.

6. Upcoming smartwatch connectivity

Notably, Tata’s iRA car tech platform provides a connected car experience. It can be used through the smartphone app, but soon one will be able to control it through their smartwatch.

7. Seven airbags

The updates on the Safari also include an enhanced safety suite which comprises six airbags as standard. However, the top-spec variants get an additional driver knee airbag, taking the count up to seven.

Toyota FJ Cruiser reboot rumored to sit on Hilux Champ chassis

Could enter production in november, but only for asia.

toyota safari looking suv

Toyota took a concept called the IMV 0 to the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, a small, chassis-cab pickup designed to lure buyers in emerging markets by being rugged, versatile, and inexpensive. A production version entered the Thai market a month after the show with the name Hilux Champ , at a price equal to about $13,000 U.S., that price achieved by selling buyers a truck that's 70% finished , the remainder being in the use-specific upfit the customer needs (and pays for). Despite at least one reviewer calling the truck "perfect," and several commenters writing some variation of, "I'd buy it right now," the Hilux Champ has almost zero chance of making it to the states. According to Japanese outlet Best Car ( translated ), however, the Hilux Champ's ladder frame might visit our shores underneath the body of the reborn FJ Cruiser .

As a refresher, gossip about an FJ Cruiser left off with a shadowy image during Toyota's presentation last August for the new Land Cruiser . When automaker exec Simon Humphries discussed making the Land Cruiser more affordable and more accessible to people around the world, a slide showed three silhouetted vehicles, the vehicle on the upper left looking like an evolved version of Toyota's Compact Cruiser EV Concept from 2021 — that concept a flirtation with the revival of the FJ Cruiser. The teased image sat higher off the ground and on much larger tires than the concept, and wore a spare wheel on the tailgate. The dimensions also looked grander than the Compact Cruiser.

Back to the Hilux Champ, front fascia and front fender looks, as well as dimensions, are where it overlaps with the FJ Cruiser in the Venn Diagram. The Champ comes in at either 185.2 inches long in 108-inch short-wheelbase form, 70.3 inches wide and 68.3 inches high. The 2014 FJ Cruiser was 181 inches long on a 106-inch wheelbase, 75 inches wide and 72 inches high. So far, this part seems eminently doable, although Best Car 's anticipated specs for the reboot presage an even smaller off-roader, at 177.2 inches long on a 108-inch wheelbase, 72 inches wide and 72.9 inches high.

However. The Hilux Champ's IMV-truck-series platform is a Toyota Thailand specialty, and manufactured there. A Japanese YouTuber said in a video he sat in on a webcast Best Car hosted where reporters explained the "mini Land Cruiser" is confirmed for debut this year and will enter production in Thailand, maybe as soon as November for the Japanese market, or as late as next spring as Toyota works through some corporate fraud issues . Magazine reporters also repeated a bit from the article saying the vehicle would be called either Land Cruiser FJ or Land Cruiser Fun for Japan.

The question is whether this potential Land Cruiser FJ on this particular architecture will make it to the U.S. market, or if Toyota has a different vision for a North American model. Our FJ has been predicted to be an upscale model at the opposite end of the rugged spectrum than the Hilux Champ, one that might be better served by the TNGA-F platform that the new Lexus GX and U.S.-spec Land Cruiser sit on. Whenever the new FJ debuts, no matter the market, Toyota is certain to be swamped with enough questions about a U.S. arrival that it will offer something better than rumor .

Jeep honors past with 2024 Easter Jeep Safari concepts

Joel Feder

As the Easter Jeep Safari kicks off for the 58th year, the off-road automaker continues its tradition of creating concepts for enthusiasts to drool over.

On Monday, Jeep unveiled four concepts for the 2024 event, including two modified Wranglers, one Gladiator, and a Grand Wagoneer. Each concept gives a strong nod to the past in various ways while putting a focus on today’s consumer trends. They’ll be on display and roam the 39 trails at the event, which takes place in Moab, Utah, from March 23-31.

Here’s a breakdown of each of the concepts.

Jeep Willys Dispatcher concept

This retro off-roader celebrates Jeep’s Willys roots with a touch of post-WWII Americana. The basis is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe plug-in hybrid, but it’s a far stretch from the electrified SUV consumers buy off dealer lots.

Underneath, the axles have been swapped for beefy Dana 50s at both ends with 4.70 gears. Those axles bolt to custom 16-inch vintage-looking steel wheels painted bright white. The Jeep team wrapped those wheels in 36-inch Super Traxion tires that are tall, narrow, and knobby. A 2.0-inch lift provides more ground clearance.

To complete the vintage exterior look, the hood has Willys stamped into its sides like the early military Jeeps. Both bumpers have been replaced with custom steel units with cut-off ends. Those bumpers both feature what’s known as “helicopter hooks,’ which WWII helicopters would hook to haul Jeeps through the air. A Warn 8274 Classic winch sits up front should things get a bit sketchy when off-roading.

The exterior is finished with Element 115 green paint contrasted by a gloss black windshield surround and roll bars. Inside, Jeep retrimmed the seats with distressed leather and contrasting houndstooth inserts. The trim on the dashboard matches with houndstooth cloth. For a more military-like look, the headrests were removed and the carpeting was replaced by a Jeep Performance Parts vinyl floor covering.

Jeep Low Down concept

Jeep Low Down concept

Jeep said the Low Down concept marks a celebration of the V-8 engine. It mixes vintage race-inspired design with capability.

The Low Down is about speed, noise, and capability. To that end, it’s based on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 with its 6.4-liter V-8.

Jeep beefed up the concept’s running gear with Dana 60 axles front and rear with 5.38 gears. The suspension remains stock, but the entire package rides high thanks to BFGoodrich Krawler 42-inch tires mounted on 20-inch brass beadlock-capable wheels. Between the massive tires and stubby bumpers, the approach and departure angle are nearly “nothing,” according to the Jeep team.

The exterior is meant to evoke “race car vibes,” the Jeep team said, with Candy Apple Red paint, custom high-clearance flat-top carbon-fiber fender flares, no rear door handles, and custom carbon-fiber hood with a see-through power dome featuring eight holes drilled into it for a view of the motor.

The interior’s covered by a custom translucent red bikini top and the floor’s been coated in Rhino Liner. Jeep stripped out the Wrangler’s touchscreen for a more focused interior. “The exhaust has two settings, loud and obnoxious, which is all the entertainment you need,” the Jeep team said. The radio has been deleted because “the motor’s the entertainment.”

Jeep High Top concept

Jeep High Top concept

Jeep High Top concept

Aiming for attainable performance, the Jeep High Top concept starts life as a Gladiator Rubicon and grabs from the Jeep Performance Parts bin.

In the name of enhanced capability, the Jeep team swapped out the axles for Dana 60s with 5.38 gearing. The truck rides on AccuAir air suspension that can be adjusted on the fly. Massive BFGoodrich 40-inch K03 all-terrain tires wrap black silver-lipped 18-inch Grenade Crawl beadlock-capable wheels. To clear those tires, Jeep Performance Parts flat fender flares have been added, which marks the first time the team has put these on a Gladiator. Fans will note these flares have been used on Wranglers in the past.

The stock 3.6-liter V-6 sits under the hood and it’s hooked to the Gladiator’s 8-speed automatic transmission.

The exterior reaches for a 1970s and ’80s J10 look with a black and Ginger Snap paint scheme. Aficionados will note a similar paint color originally dubbed Ginger Poly or Golden Ginger existed on the J10 back in the day. The retro two-tone graphics play off a black Jeep Performance Parts sun-bonnet top.

An AEV RX front bumper was modified with a low hoop so it wouldn’t impact the front camera’s viewing angle. Rock Slide Engineering rock rails protect the truck’s side rails and double as power assist steps for shorter occupants.

Inside, custom seats feature quilted leather from Alea Leather and the Jeep Performance Parts accessory rail sits atop the dash. This allows GoPros, iPads, and other electronics to be mounted on the dash easily for the day’s adventure. The bed sports a Decked storage system for trail gear, and it can be locked.

Jeep Vacationeer concept

Jeep Vacationeer concept

Jeep is finally ready to give the people what they want: wood trim on the side of a Wagoneer. Well, some people.

Based on the Grand Wagoneer Series III , the Vacationeer honors the nameplate’s heritage while aiming for fans’ nostalgia heart strings.

The massive Wagoneer concept receives a 1.5-inch lift and rides on white 18-inch 701 Method Racing wheels. Jeep wraps the wheels in 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires, but for the rubber to clear custom body-colored fender flares were installed after opening the wheel wells a bit. Custom front and rear skid plates, a revised front fascia with LED off-road lights, and a Warn winch up front complete the exterior changes.

Spearminted paint contrasts with a white protective coating of Rhino liner covers the roof. A custom rack sits atop the SUV with auxiliary lighting and a RedTail Skyloft roof tent. The key design bit is the wood grain stripe that adorns the sides of the Vacationeer concept. It’s a decal inspired by the woodgrain paneling on the ’60s and ’70s Wagoneers, not the full body panels from the ’80s. The decal is textured to feel like wood.

Inside, Tupelo leather seats feature inserts designed by New England’s clothing magnet Kiel James Patrick. Those inserts feature Easter eggs with little TJs, CJs, and JTs hidden within the plaid design. The second- and third-row seats and second-row sunroof were removed. That leaves easy access to the roof-top tent from within the Vacationeer. The Jeep team Rhino-lined the floors to make cleanup easier. Jeep even put a vintage luggage set inside the Vacationeer concept for that old-school feeling.

The Safari's design sees notable alterations from the outgoing model. While retaining the split bi-LED headlamp design, it now incorporates full-width connected lightbars above the headlamps that are situated lower. The parametric grille design is new and beneath it gets a silver-finished faux skid-plate element. At the rear, the tail lamps share a housing with its 5-seater sibling, the Harrier, but with a distinct light signature. The rear bumper has been redesigned, featuring rectangular flanges that house reflectors and reverse lights. The SUV now rides on 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels with aero inserts.

The Safari comes loaded with features, including a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment system of the same size on lower variants, a new four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata Motors logo, a new drive selector for automatic variants, and a digital display for the drive selector. Other features include a touch-based panel for HVAC controls, dual-zone climate control, ventilated first and second-row seats, a 10-speaker JBL-tuned sound system, a wireless charger, a panoramic sunroof with mood lights, rear-door sun shades, a 360-degree camera, powered tailgates, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, a powered driver seat, and more.

Safety features include 7 airbags (6 airbags are standard), Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), three-point seat belts with reminders for all passengers, corner stability control, hill hold, traction control, disc brakes for all wheels, panic brake alert, and more. The Safari achieved an impressive 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests, securing the highest score recorded by an India-made vehicle in these tests. This is thanks to structural improvements and the use of high-strength steel in key areas of the SUV's construction.

Under the hood, the Safari retains its 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine, producing 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. The SUV also provides three terrain response modes (normal, rough, and wet) and three drive modes (eco, city, and sport).
