Chateau La Tour Carnet 2020
Marks and reviews
Description
The typicality of a Haut-Medoc red wine signed by Bernard Magrez
With origins dating back to the 12th century, Chateau La Tour Carnet is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc. The property takes its name from its tower, built in 1120 and surrounded by moats. In 1407, vines were planted at the estate. Owned by Bernard Magrez, this Classified Growth of 1855 belongs to the elite wine estates of the Haut-Medoc .
The vineyard
Situated in the commune of Saint-Laurent-Medoc, the Chateau La Tour Carnet vineyard covers 176 hectares of vines. Planted at a high density (8 to 10,000 feet per hectare), the vines are aged 32 years on average and planted in Gunzian gravel soils upon a mostly calcareous clay base. The vineyard of Chateau La Tour Carnet has achieved the label of High Environmental Value Level 3.
The vinification and aging
Harvested manually, the grapes undergo an initial sorting in the vineyard, followed by manual sorting on a vibrating table, then de-stemming and optical sorting. Cooling of the harvested fruit using a cryogenic tunnel (by spraying liquid nitrogen). Vatting by gravity. Vinification in oak vats and small cement vats. Cold pre-fermentation maceration (8 ° C). Fully manual punching downs. Alcoholic fermentation at low temperature (28 ° C). Maceration period of 25 to 32 days. Aging lasts 16 months in barrels, 30% of which are new oak barrels.
The Chateau La Tour Carnet 2020 is made from a blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%).

Decanted about 2 hours and consumed over another 2 hours or so. Virtually opaque purple-garnet color. Moderately complex nose of cassis, leather, tobacco, and red fruits that persisted for about 3 hours and then closed down. Ripe, silky , and nicely balanced on the palate at first but eventually became rather harsh, tannic, and angular. Not sure what to make of it. Had we drunk it all in the first two hours or so I'd have rated it 90 or so. Later not so good but perhaps it just shut down. Will it keep? Will it age? I haven't a clue. I'll buy more and drink them young and perhaps keep one for the sake of curiosity.

Nose: Fresh and ripe cassis, wildflowers, vanilla, cotton candy, old sawdust. Palate: Tart blackberry; tannins have a light prickle to them; bracing acidy, which does mellow on day two.

Dark garnet in color, the wine pops with its show nose of espresso, smoked currants, licorice, and barbecue aromas. The wine is ripe, round and lush with a full, rich, polished wave of black cherries and cocoa that come through easily on the mid-palate and in the finish. Drink from 2024-2045.

Wine Type and Color
Primary Grape
Merlot is one of the most important Bordeaux varieties along with Cabernet Sauvignon. It's fleshier and ripens earlier than Cabernet, resulting in softer wines with plush tannins and fruit. Bordeaux is the grape's native home, where it's the dominant grape in Right Bank appellations like Pomerol and St.-Emilion and plays a supportive role on the Left Bank. It has also gained an international presence, with a notable boom in California in the mid-1990s, both as a single-variety wine and as part of a blend. While France and California are the most important growers of Merlot, versions from Italy, Australia, Washington, New York and more are worth seeking out.

94 Points Wine Enthusiast - This magnificent medieval castle controls a vineyard that is just inland from Saint-Julien. With its ripe perfumes and rich tannins, the wine has a powerful potential set against the tightly juicy black currant fruits.
93 Points James Suckling - Blackberry, blackcurrant and some licorice aromas follow through to a medium body with a nice center palate and fine, focused tannins.
93 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - The 2020 la Tour Carnet sports a deep purple-black color and notes of crushed red and black currants, Morello cherries and fresh blackberries, plus hints of lavender, pencil lead and tobacco leaf with a touch of bay leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a great intensity of crunchy black fruits with a lively backbone and fine-grained tannins, finishing with great length and a skip in its step. Nicely done!
93 Points Vinous - The 2020 La Tour Carnet has a wonderful bouquet of finely honed blackberry and briar scents plus touches of crushed rock and cedar, one of the most sophisticated that I have encountered from Bernard Magrez’s Haut-Médoc at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly chalky tannins, fine balance and good weight and focus on the finish. This is well worth seeking out as it is often released at a consumer-friendly price.

They have done a good job of carefully working the extraction so that the tannins are abundant but not bitter, and the fruit is savoury, with layers of redcurrant and raspberry alongside some hawthorn character. Expertly handled, lovely appealing aromatics, but things finish a little abruptly. A yield of 30hl/ha. 12 months ageing. Harvest September 22 to October 2. - Jane Anson, Decanter
