Summer B 2024 Start Date:

June 17, 2024

Worldwide, the impacts of tourism on the natural environment are under increasing scrutiny and demands for restraint and solutions. The World Tourism Organization as well as the World Travel and Tourism Council have explicitly called for increased focus on sustainability when creating policies and managing global tourism. There is an urgent need to protect the resources that attract tourists to destinations around the globe. The recent pandemic has caused the world to notice that destinations such as Venice and Amsterdam, if allowed to recover from over-tourism through more sustainable practices, can and will do so. In our State of Florida, there is increased pressure to protect our natural attractions which include the state’s 825 miles of beaches, the Everglades, the Keys, coral reefs, springs and mangroves. Other alarming events such as red tide, climate change and sea-level rise, and extreme storm events have all raised awareness of the vulnerability of the tourism industry both locally and abroad.

This innovative degree recognizes the importance of sustainable operations in the tourism industry today, its impacts on the planet, and the increasing demand for a more sustainable approach to managing hospitality and tourism businesses. This unique, fully-online program, offered through the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, is an interdisciplinary collaboration with the Department of Earth and Environment of the College of Arts, Science and Education and features a blended curriculum composed of the most-relevant existing courses from each department as well as a host of new courses specifically designed for the degree.

Students pursuing this degree will acquire the knowledge and tools needed to become industry leaders in the management of sustainable tourism standards that will help protect the world’s natural and cultural resources and maintain them intact for future generations. Students will learn to apply these skills and lead through advocacy, conservation and community partnerships. Topics covered include socioeconomic, environmental and cultural impacts with respect to responsible business practices and local governance. In a nutshell, the overarching thrust of the program is to teach students how tourism can adapt to and mitigate climate change and become a key sector in the transition to low-carbon economies.

carrying food

Major American hospitality and tourism corporations including Hilton, Carnival, and others, have aligned their sustainability programs with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), making 2030-target commitments to reduce their environmental footprints and setting social-impact goals. Other global brands like Inter-Continental, Air France/KLM and Sodexho rigorously compete for highest positioning on the annual Dow Jones ranking of SP 600 corporations for their environmental sustainability leadership. The need to balance environmental protection with human recreational use has become urgent and requires a workforce that is trained in understanding the business of tourism as well as how to think long-term to conserve spectacular natural places for future generations of tourists.

The primary purpose of the B.A. in Global Sustainable Tourism degree program is to provide the global hospitality and tourism industry with sustainability-oriented managers who will know how to balance travelers’ desires for memorable experiences while protecting nature, culture, communities, and the planet. Students will emerge prepared to work in promoting transitions to sustainability in tourism for business, government and non-governmental organizations anywhere in the world.

Job Outlook

A Green Lodging Trends survey (2019) indicated that 65 percent of hospitality and tourism businesses employ a dedicated sustainability coordinator and as many as 90 percent are conducting staff training in sustainability either with their own staff or through hired consultants and training experts. The types of businesses include tour companies, hotels, airlines, cruise lines, convention and visitors bureaus, theme parks, festivals, destination management companies and transportation companies, among others. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports annual salaries in 2019 averaged $71,360 per year for sustainability professionals, although not specific to the sustainable tourism segment, with a projected growth of 8 percent (double the national average) for specialists.

Partnerships

The Chaplin School, named for Mr. Harvey Chaplin, Chairman of Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, annually co-produces the Food Network and Cooking Channel South Beach Wine and Food Festival (SobeWFF) along with Southern Glazer’s.  The event, largest of its kind in the U.S., generates experiential learning opportunities for as many as 1200 FIU students each year.  Additionally, the Chaplin School has developed many other long-standing relationships with major global hospitality and tourism corporations such as Carnival Cruise Lines (funder of the Carnival Gold Scholars and the Carnival Student Center on our BBC campus) and Marriott International (namesake for the school’s Marriott Tianjin China Program), along with some well-known names among food and beverage producers to the industry such as Bacardi, Badia and Quirch that have greatly contributed to the school’s Restaurant, Culinary and Spirits Management programs.  Global corporate partners have been central to efforts to expand funding opportunities to students, serve the local community, provide employment experiences, and deliver the resources needed to advance the quality of education and service provided to students and alumni. Frequently Asked Questions

Getting a degree in hospitality and tourism can certainly be worth it. Having a degree means you have a broader set of skills to use in many different hospitality-related jobs. It also means you have a deeper knowledge and understanding of the industry, which can help you perform better on the job. You can also specialize your education, such as in hotel management or restaurant management. A degree in this field is also worth it because some careers require you to have at least a bachelor’s degree.

An undergraduate degree in travel and tourism management is a popular option. This degree has many forms, including a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Business Administration. You can specialize in tourism administration, hotel management, or international tourism, to name a few. Other degrees you might consider include the following: • Business or business administration • Marketing • International relations • Hospitality administration • Event management

The cost of a travel and tourism degree varies widely. In-state tuition averages less than $10,000 per year, while out-of-state tuition averages more than $27,000 per year, according to the Education Data Initiative. This does not include the cost of books, supplies, room, board, and other expenses. Factoring these items in, the average undergraduate degree costs more than $36,000 per year. You can reduce your college expenses by completing credits at a junior college and then transferring to a university to complete your degree. You can also reduce expenses by taking online courses, which are usually cheaper than on-campus classes, and by seeking financial aid like scholarships and grants.

A travel and tourism degree can qualify you for many jobs, from a tour manager to a hotel manager to a travel agent. You might work in the sports industry, for an airline, or in restaurant management. Some popular job titles in travel and tourism include the following: • Travel Manager • Bar Manager • Event Manager • Tour Guide • Travel Writer

The pay for tourism-related careers varies widely. How much you earn depends on factors like your specific education, your experience, and where you work – both in terms of your employer and the geographic location. For context, the median salary for a travel agent is $46,400 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hotel managers make anywhere from $47,000-$71,000 per year. However, numerous tourism jobs have the potential to pay over $100,000. These include lodging managers, hotel controllers, and museum directors.

Museum directors are noted as having among the highest salary potential in travel and tourism, with annual salaries that can reach as high as $168,000, according to ZipRecruiter. General managers of large hotels and resorts can also make well into the six figures, potentially making as much as $155,000 per year.

Hospitality-related degrees are not considered difficult because they usually don’t require high-level math and science courses. Most programs also have minimal writing components. However, some of the courses you take can be quite complex, including economics, business administration, and human resource management. Studying hospitality is much easier if you have a keen interest in the field and dedicate yourself to studying and meeting course requirements.

A typical undergraduate program in travel and tourism is around 120 credits. You need four years of full-time studies to complete that many credits. You can graduate more quickly if you take additional credits each semester. Some programs also offer intersession courses and summer courses to help you finish your degree sooner. If you study part-time, expect to need five to six years to complete your undergraduate degree. Graduate programs in travel and tourism usually require around 30 credits and take 1.5 to two years to finish. Again, this timeframe might be shorter or longer, depending on the number of credits you take each semester.

Online Bachelor's in Hospitality Management Programs Ranking Guidelines

We ranked these degree programs based on quality, curricula, school awards, rankings, and reputation.

Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

  • Collapse All

Academics - 75%

Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.

In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.

If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through  contact page .

We thank you for your readership and trust.

Once events conclude, they review budgets, submit billable invoices, and approve payments to vendors.

Most event planners need a bachelors' in hospitality or a related field and significant professional experience. Those who work primarily with state and federal governments must obtain additional certification. Event planners typically work full time in a demanding, fast-paced environment. They often travel regularly to attend events and inspect potential venues.

Marketing Managers

Marketing managers develop programs and advertising campaigns designed to generate consumer interest in a product or service. They often work alongside other professionals to develop budgets and contracts that pertain to marketing media. They also evaluate the efficacy of marketing materials, conduct targeted research, and develop pricing strategies. They may serve as liaisons between clients and promotional agencies.

Regenerative tourism can be a tool that promotes sustainable resource use while meeting local needs and visions for the future, creating a net positive benefit to the destination.

Destination developers seeking to use regenerative tourism as a tool must be familiar with tourism planning, project and people management, sustainable natural resource principles, visitor use trends, leadership, communication, and more. Learners in Tourism Destination Management will engage with content from the fields of business, economics, sustainability, development, and tourism and hospitality.

They will develop skills in data-driven decision-making, and project planning, design, management, and evaluation. Learners will explore how the tourism and hospitality industry is entangled within other industries (e.g., food systems, transportation), cultivate a set of best practices and project management skills useful for planning, evaluate current and future visitor trends to inform decision-making, understand the impacts of climate change to tourism (and tourism to climate change), and learn to balance local development, sustainable resource use, and economic security using regenerative principles.

Program graduates will be prepared to apply their skills in a variety of occupations, such as destination planners, tourism managers, and tourism coordinators.

How to Use Eclipse Glasses or Viewers

Turn away from the sky and find your shadow. With your back facing the sun, place your eclipse glasses or viewer over your eyes. You should not be able to see anything through the filter(s), so be careful of your surroundings!

With your eyewear in position, turn back toward the sky and look around for the (now much fainter) Sun. If you can’t seem to find it, don't remove your eye protection to look! Ask someone for help.

During full totality, it is safe to temporarily remove your eclipse glasses/viewer, but you must put your lenses back on before totality is over. When in doubt, always keep your lenses on.

Plans are in motion to have these distributed throughout the Kingston community, and included below is a PDF version for download!

Eclipse Safety Brochure

If you want to buy glasses...

Please note that sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe to use during an eclipse. If you are planning on purchasing your own eclipse glasses or viewers, it is recommended you buy them  as soon as possible .

We do not recommend buying eclipse safety equipment from Amazon , as they cannot ensure their products meet required ISO-12312-2 safety standards for solar filters.

Here are a few trusted companies for up-to-code eclipse eye protection:

Rainbow Symphony     American Paper Optics     Lunt Solar Systems

For instructions and tips on how to safely view an eclipse, see this  American Astronomical Society (AAS) article

The Monarch Butterfly Project

If you are looking to support a good cause with your eclipse glasses purchase, see The Monarch Butterfly Eclipse Project! Their mission states that "100% of net profits will go to The Monarch Butterfly Eclipse Foundation", which will help protect Monarch habitats and population health.
