Drink and Learn

The all-important guide to north texas brewery tours.

Rahr and Sons Brewing

If you're a craft beer aficionado, then you're in luck, because North Texas has a plethora of great breweries at which you can wet your whistle. A small admission fee (usually $15 or less) gets you a tour of the brewery, a pint glass for your collection, and a few pints of beer. What a steal.

Here's a list of breweries around North Texas that offer weekly tours:

Bitter Sisters Brewery Addison's resident brewery has tours every Saturday from 12-2 pm for $15, which gets you the standard tour, three beers, and a pint glass. Bitter Sisters excels at making clean, crisp beers, like the Hissy Fit Marzen Lager and the Busy Body Blonde Lager. The brewery also recently debuted a taproom, open on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Community Beer Co. Practically next door to Peticolas Brewing Company (see below) in the Dallas Design District, Community features a gigantic taproom that often hosts local venders and a musician. Tours occur every Saturday from 12-5 pm. You get three beers with your admission of $10 if tickets are purchased online (by the Friday evening before), or you can pay $15 at the door. The brewery also has the taproom open weekly Wednesday through Saturday, where beer can be purchased by the glass.

Deep Ellum Brewing Co. Dallas' Deep Ellum Brewery tour is a great place to begin a Saturday in Deep Ellum. The brewery includes a taproom and large patio, where you're sure to find live music every week during tour hours, which are 12-3 pm. Afterward, head over to Elm or Main streets to enjoy the large selection of restaurants and bars Deep Ellum has to offer. The tour costs $15 at the door or $12 online, and you receive three beers and a pint glass. The brewery also has weekly taproom hours, where you can hang out and buy beer by the glass.

Division Brewing Arlington's first locally owned and operated brewery, Division Brewing has a taproom open to the public on Friday evening, from 4 pm to midnight, but it has recently opened on Saturdays for tours. Its $15 fee comes with four beers and the standard souvenir glass that we've come to expect. The brewery's Facebook page is the best source of information on tours and tastings, as they're still getting up and running on a regular schedule. With 10 to 15 beers on tap to taste, this is a must-see new brewery.

Four Bullets Brewery Located in Richardson, Four Bullets currently only has hours on Saturday, from 12-6 pm. The tour costs $10 and gets you three beers and a pint glass. After the tour, grab a pint of the Royal Flush Red Ale and head out to the expansive patio to hang out. Once you've had your fill at the brewery, head over to the Richardson Food Park across the street, which features a decent local draft beer assortment and an always rotating selection of food trucks.

Franconia Brewing Company One of the first breweries to open its doors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Franconia has one tour a week, at 11 am on Saturdays. The always entertaining guide for the tour is typically the owner himself, Dennis Werhman, who comes from a family of brewers back in his home country of Germany. He is not afraid to tell you his opinions of the huge domestic brewers and how Franconia sets itself apart by using the methods of the German Purity Law. The tour is only $5, and you receive several beers during the event. For an extra $5, you can get a Franconia glass to take home.

Martin House Brewing Company Situated just across the Trinity River from downtown Fort Worth, Martin House's skyline view pairs extremely well with its excellent beer. Martin House is open for tours on Thursdays, 6-8 pm, and Saturdays, 2-5 pm, for $10 (yes, you get a pint glass to keep). Expect large crowds of locals, who flock here regularly to listen to the live music, play games, and visit with the friendly team who brew some of Cowtown's most popular craft beers.

Nine Band Brewing Company Allen's only brewery has tours for $15 every Saturday at 12 pm, 1 pm, and 2 pm. The cost of admission comes with the requisite pint glass and beer samples. Nine Band has a wide selection, from its 28th State Stout to the Badge Honey Blonde. The brewery's taproom is also open Monday through Saturday evenings, where you can buy beer by the glass.

Panther Island Brewing Company Head over to North Main Street in Fort Worth for Panther Island Brewing's tour on Fridays, 5-9 pm, and Sundays, 2-6 pm. The $10 tour gets you a free pint glass, three samples of beer, live music, and access to local food trucks.

Peticolas Brewing Company A staple in the Dallas Design District and craft beer community, Peticolas hosts tours on the first and third Saturday of every month for $10 at the door. The cost of admission gets you a tour, three beers from its award-winning selection (like Velvet Hammer Imperial Red Ale or Royal Scandal English Pale Ale), and a pint glass. Before and after the tour, there is plenty of space to relax, drink your beers, and play bar games like rebound shuffle board. Dallasites have been flocking here to hang out on Saturdays since its opening.

Rabbit Hole Brewing Hop on over to Rabbit Hole Brewing just north of Fort Worth, in Justin, Texas. These guys host two tours on Saturdays, between 12-4 pm. You're likely to find core beers on tap — Mike Modano's 561 Kolcsh, Rapture Fusion Brown Ale, and 10/6 English Pale Ale — along with seasonal offerings on a constant rotation.

Rahr & Sons Brewing Company Rahr has been a staple in the Fort Worth community and craft beer scene for years, and it was one of the first in Dallas-Fort Worth to open its doors to the public. It has $10 tours on Wednesday evenings, from 5-7:30 pm, and on Saturday afternoons, from 1-3 pm. Of course, free beer samples are included with your admission. We recommend hitting the Wednesday evening tour to avoid the large weekend crowds and for a chance to sample any specialty beers that may be on tap.

Revolver Brewing Revolver took Dallas-Fort Worth by storm with Blood & Honey, its flagship beer on tap in most restaurants these days. The brewery is worth the drive out to Granbury, with one of the best brewery atmospheres around. Revolver opens from 12-3 pm on Saturdays for tours, and four 8-ounce tastings are included with admission. Come ready to hang out at this family-friendly brewery, where you can listen to live music and try your hand at giant Jenga or cornhole.

Sausage News

Cajun restaurant with a special thing for sausage to open in arlington.

A new family-owned restaurant centered on Cajun cuisine is opening in Arlington: Called Beaux Boudin , it'll be a takeout-only place specializing in boudin sausage, plus Cajun and Creole dishes, and is opening in late March at 1821 S. Fielder Rd., in the former Fork in the Road, a nearly decade-old cafe that closed in 2022.

Beaux Boudin comes from husband-and-wife team Jeffery and Melissa Crump, who've been selling Cajun dishes at farmers markets in Fort Worth, Carrollton, Keller, and Grand Prairie for the past four years.

In 2023, the two decided to leave their day jobs — he was a software engineer, she was the program manager at the Women’s Center of Tarrant County — to open a brick-and-mortar.

“We feel like this is the right time,” Jeffery says. “We’ve made a name for ourselves by working the farmers markets, so in a way, we’re not exactly starting from scratch. Time after time, our customers would say, 'When are you going to open a brick-and-mortar?'"

Their centerpiece is boudin sausage, a specialty sausage made with rice, pork liver, onion, and bell pepper. Jeffery developed the recipe based on a recipe from his grandmother, a native of Eunice, Louisiana.

“I call it the hidden gem of American cuisine,” Jeffery says. “It’s such a good-tasting, profound dish that hits all of our dietary needs — proteins, carbs, and veggies. It’s been relegated mainly to Southern Louisiana, but it has a long history in America that goes back to the French settlers. It’s a uniquely American dish.”

The sausage will be served in a variety of ways:

  • By the link, in two flavors, regular or spicy
  • In breaded and fried boudin balls, with or without pepper jack cheese
  • A patty melt sandwich on Texas toast, with American cheese and remoulade
  • Street tacos, with repollo slaw, pepper jack cheese, and remoulade, on flour tortillas

Other menu items include jambalaya, chicken & sausage gumbo, and seafood gumbo. The latter is another of the restaurant's star dishes, made with crab, Gulf shrimp, Andouille sausage, and okra, and a special roux.

“We’re really proud of the seafood gumbo,” Jeffery says. “We make it with a dark roux with a white wine stock, which gives it a rich, complex flavor.”

Making their stocks and gumbos is a laborious task that takes days, Melissa says. “We’re closed Monday and Tuesday, but we’ll be here making the stocks and gumbo,” she says. “It’s a two-day process.”

Jeffery and Melissa's paths first crossed in the 1990s while they were students at G.W. Carver High School in Houston, where they grew up. Despite going their separate ways after graduating, they met again years later and fell in love and married.

Over the years, two of Melissa’s family members have become involved in the couple’s food endeavors and are now head cooks at the restaurant.

Her son, Aiden Aguirre, has been helping the couple cook since he was 11, Melissa says. He’s now a senior at L.D. Bell, where he’s enrolled in the Buinger Career & Technical Education Academy’s culinary arts program. After he graduates this spring, Melissa says, he’s heading to Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, where he’ll continue to study culinary arts.

Aguirre will share cooking duties with Melissa’s sister, Cindy Hernandez, who helped develop the recipe for the restaurant’s boudin tacos.

“Our dad said, `You can put anything on tacos, so put the boudin on them,’” Melissa says. “At first we weren’t sure if it would work. But Cindy came up with a great recipe for a repollo slaw, which is sort of like pico de gallo but with cabbage, and our dad was right, it worked.”

When they open, they'll initially accept walk-in orders only, then launch online ordering a few weeks later on their website and third-party apps such as Uber Eats and Door Dash.

“We do want to take things slow at first,” Jeffery says. “I’d rather start out small and then grow as we go along.”

We sure do love our craft beer here in DFW. Of course, there are plenty of bars and restaurants serving up the local stuff on tap, but it tastes even better at the source, especially now that the winter chill has thawed. Here's a comprehensive guide to DFW's craft breweries , with information on tours, cost, any special appearances by food trucks or musicians and, most importantly, beer samples .

Unless noted, breweries are not climate-controlled, so dress accordingly (e.g., as little clothing as possible when it's hot.) And plan ahead, as most breweries stop serving samples 30 minutes before closing. Cheers! — Margo Sivin

Green Flash Brewing's West Coast IPA.

Rank imposter

As a sucker for beer-related click bait, I couldn’t resist following an online link to Tripadvisor’s “10 BEST San Diego Breweries (Updated 2024).”

Can’t say I love the rankings, especially No. 1: Green Flash.

This may come as a surprise to Tripadvisor, as well as trippers following its advice, but Green Flash no longer lives here. Now an arm of SweetWater Brewing, it has moved to Fort Collins, Colo.

Tripadvisor may have been suckered by Green Flash’s website, which plays up its coastal roots and plays down its current Rocky Mountain locale.

Visitors trekking to the Tripadvisor listed address will find a locked, abandoned warehouse. Sad, but appropriate. This brewery was named for a natural phenomenon that is elusive, if not non-existent.

The Next Round

Ongoing: Orange County’s Green Cheek Beer has opened a tap room/kitchen inside the former home of Bagby Beer. That terrific brewery is no more, but the terrific former owner — Jeff Bagby — still brews here. Green Cheek, 601 S. Coast Highway, Oceanside. greencheekbeer.com/oceanside

Sunday : Raise a Guerita blonde ale to toast the band rocking Chula Vista Brewery’s Mariachi Sunday event. Chula Vista Brewery, 294 Third Ave., Chula Vista. chulavistabrewery.com

April 18: Stone Brewing co-founder Steve Wagner continues his series of beer-and-cigar dinners next month. The meal features five courses, five beers and three cigars for $125. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, 1999 Citracado Parkway, Escondido. stonebrewing.com/visit/bistros/escondido .

Quick Sips, Spring Cleaning Edition

Abnormal Beer's Blackberry Pie Imperial Berliner Weisse.

Blackberry Pie

From: Abnormal Beer, San Diego

ABV (Alcohol By Volume): 6.8 percent

Style: Imperial Berliner Weisse

Drink or dump: Drink. Suitably tart, with ribbons of berry, coconut and vanilla flavors. Cinnamon makes a late, zesty appearance.

Almanac's Farmer’s Reserve Plum sour ale.

Farmer’s Reserve Plum

From: Almanac, Alameda

ABV: 6.7 percent

Style: Sour Ale

Drink or dump: Drink. Aged in oak barrels for three years, this Farmer pours a murky reddish orange, exuding stone fruit and barnyard funk aromas. Pickled plum and apricot flavors enter boldly, then subside in the dry finish.

Cellarmaker's Mo’ Simcoe West Coast India pale ale.

From: Cellarmaker, Oakland

ABV: 6.9 percent

Style: West Coast India Pale Ale

Drink or dump: Drink. At the late, lamented Toronado tavern, I was buttonholed by a stranger raving about Cellarmaker’s beers. Ignoring these hosannas was a mistake, if this stunning IPA is any indication. Straw-colored, it delighted me with bright notes of orange zest, pine sap and strawberry.
