Solo Female Travelers

20 Ways to find travel buddies and friends for travel in 2023

girl travel partner

We’re all for solo travel, and we encourage everyone to try it at least once, especially women (warning: it’s addictive!).

But we also recognize that there is immense learning and perspective to be earned from finding a travel buddy with similar interests, or in making new friends for travel. Such connections are made in our community every day.

Travel buddies can make a trip better through shared experiences, making some parts of that solo trip all the more memorable.

They are also one of the best ways to fight the anxiety that comes with doing something alone, the fear of boredom and the loneliness that may sometimes strike on a solo trip.

Traveling is important , and traveling solo is a wonderful experience, but making meaningful connections with people is one of the most important benefits of travel and one of the many reasons why women travel solo .

Deep connections are more easily built when we are on vacation somewhere far away from home. That traveler you met in Antigua and with whom you went on a 2 day volcano hike could end up being one of your best friends.

You can look for opportunities to meet people when traveling , but in this article we will explore ways in which you can make friends for travel before going on a trip, maybe even planning a trip together before departure.

Everyone needs travel friends with whom to go on some of the life changing adventures that are better shared.

Find your ideal travel buddy with the help of our tips.

Facebook groups

girl travel partner

Social media is after all, social 🙂

Facebook is full of various travel groups for people with all kinds of interests. You can look for groups that match your particular hobby or interest, there are ride sharing groups, meetup and couchsurfing groups and we have even created our very own group for meeting solo female travelers on the road.

You can join our group and meet other solo female travelers who are exclusively interested in meeting up, finding a female travel buddy, swapping homes or getting a pet sitting engagement or a pet sitter.

Another group to join is Host a Sister which follows the same logic and is also exclusively for women. You can also search for more specific groups by typing on Facebook’s search box “travel buddies over 50”, “Black travel buddies”, etc.

All our Solo Female Travel Tours are designed by women and for women who travel solo, and 85%+ of our guests do come on their own.

We pair travelers to avoid the single supplement and most of our guests come without a travel partner, so everyone is ready to mingle and get to know one another. There is no awkwardness in talking to the rest of the group and everyone’s openness makes it a great way to make travel friends.

While the majority of the tour activities are planned out, there is often free time and we put all guests in touch with each other before the trip so they can connect and decide if they want to extend the trip and travel together.

Many friendships flourish during these trips and lifetime travel buddies are often found. We love seeing guests book trips together again after meeting during one of our tours.

Workaway is all about giving back to the community you’re traveling to by contributing your time and skills to a host of your choice.

You pick a destination you are interested in visiting and then look for available opportunities. The intention is to immerse yourself in the local way of living, enhancing your travel experience through cultural immersion.

The most common opportunities are volunteering and working holidays where you are expected to help out during a few hours every day in exchange for accommodation and sometimes meals.

Workaway also has a “ Travel Buddy ” section, where, instead of finding a host, you look for someone who is traveling in the same region you’re in so that you can connect, meetup or even travel together.

You can see where people are traveling, the dates they intend to be there and the reason why they’re traveling and see if they match up with what you are looking for.

Couchsurfing

girl travel partner

Couchsurfing is a free version of Airbnb, or shall we say Airbnb is a paid version of Couchsurfing since they were first!

The idea is to live like a local by staying in someone’s house sleeping for free on their couch, bed or a mattress. Some hosts have proper guest bedrooms. There is no expectation of payment but you should offer to cook for your host, bring a small gift or take them out for a meal to appreciate their hospitality.

Like Workaway, Couchsurfing offers a meetup feature where you can either meet with another traveler one-on-one or you can create a group meetup for similarly-minded people who like to do the same activities as you, from hiking to wine tasting.

Internations

girl travel partner

Meeting people is particularly difficult when you move to a new city and know nobody. In the years before social media became as pervasive as it now it, I used Internations as my go-to place for weekly meet-ups, parties and events.

This social media networking site is a cross between LinkedIn and Facebook in that it has a more professional, expat-y target but it is all about meeting new people and mingling, for fun and for business connections.

The average user is an educated professional in their 20-40 age range. The site has local guides with things to do and lots of events that are social in nature and where new people are warmly welcomed by the designated hosts.

You can share your travel plans, meet locals where you will be for a work trip or make new friends at a new destination. It is especially useful for the bigger cities where there is a larger base.

Base entry level is free but to access more benefits you need to pay a fee.

Join My Trip

girl travel partner

Join My Trip is sort of like a local, guided experience where you can tag along with other travelers on a local journey around a specific part of the world. Anyone can create a trip and let others join.

The trips vary in price as some are with professional guides while others are just for tagging along with other solo travelers who want to share transportation fare (what they call a “seat filler”). The trip leader can charge a small fee to organize the entire trip.

They also have a “Global Greeter Network” where you pay the annual membership and then can request someone to pick you up at a designated spot. You can then go on for a guided tour, a walk around the city, or just be dropped off somewhere.

In this way, you get to find out more about the area from a local without worrying about having to find a taxi. Other categories include “Travel buddies”, “Group Travel”, and “Female Travel”.

girl travel partner

Have you ever tried Meetup ?

This is an awesome app to use while traveling that isn’t only for global travel, but is also a great way to meet people where you live who share your interests.

You join a meetup in the area you’re situated, which is basically an event or activity, and meet people for anything, from sunrise yoga to kayaking.

Travel-related Meetup groups are a great way to find a travel buddy as you can connect with people who have shared interests and friendships may form. And remember meetups are for anyone, both locals and international travelers, so you never know who you’re going to meet.

BeWelcome

girl travel partner

Just like Couchsurfing, BeWelcome is a site where you can find a place to stay, connect with other travelers, create or join meetups.

Unlike the others, which are paid options, BeWelcome is a free, open source, not-for-profit site that works on volunteers and donations.

Just create an account and then search the world for open-minded individuals looking to share their local knowledge with all those who are interested in listening.

Travel Buddies

girl travel partner

Travel Buddies is a simple and straightforward site to share your upcoming trip and hopefully find someone who will be traveling to the same area and at the same time.

It’s a similar setup to a forum site like Reddit, so you can view other people’s posts and chat to them directly, and there is no social linking or vetting so it feels less safe than other options.

There’s a Home “Public Wall” if you’d like to ask a general question to the community or a “Find a travel buddy” where you can filter by your destination.  You don’t even need to login to see other people’s plans and profiles, everything is open.

girl travel partner

GAFFL is a website that connects travelers with similar travel plans and you can even share the costs of transport or accommodation.

The name is quite cute as it stands for “Get a Friend for Life”. The site is separated into “Travel Buddy”, “Stays” and “Flights”. So you can either find someone to travel with, or share the cost of a stay so you don’t have to pay the full room rate.

There’s quite some inbuilt safety on GAFFL, as you can split costs using their payment system, join other travelers, start your own trip, invite others and even control who can join you.

Find other travelers in your destination with the “Discover”, so that you can connect instantaneously.

There is also a four step verification process, travel partner reviews and ID verification. GAFFL is not free but their prices work per month ($7), 6 months ($20) or a year ($30).

Lonely Planet’s ThornTree

girl travel partner

Thorn Tree is Lonely Planet’s dedicated forum board that’s been active since 1996 and has a really great track record and an expansive community.

Did you know that their name comes from an actual acacia tree at one of the colonial hotels in Nairobi?

The Sarova Stanley was where travelers would look for other travelers to share transportation or a trip with by posting notes on the tree’s trunk. The tree and the message board still exists and you can see it if you head over to the hotel’s cafe .

Reddit is another great place to find male or female travel buddies, although unlike Facebook groups (or anything out of social media) the ability to vet the person via their social proof is very limited and thus you should tread carefully.

Scroll through the various subreddits. Some good ones for finding travel buddies include Travel Partners and Solo Travel .

Your colleagues

girl travel partner

Do you know someone who loves to travel as much as you do?

Maybe they are not a close friend but someone who you share a passion for travel with. Ask them if they are keen to go on a trip, but start small to make sure that you are compatible.

I have been on a multitude of trips with colleagues at my various jobs, be it at Google or as a Management Consultant. Because we would be traveling for work together, adding a few days of leisure travel at either end was easy and worked well.

Plus, I already knew them and the professional bond made it more likely that we would all be more accommodating and get along better.

Find someone on the road

Meeting someone on the road could turn into a lifelong friendship and some of the best travel buddies could end up being that person you met at a hostel somewhere and with whom you went on a week-long trip.

Like with other travel buddies you do not know well, you may want to start with a day trip somewhere and then extend if you click and travel well together.

If the connection is not there and they turn out to be a bit irritating, just have the confidence to decline further adventures. You’ll likely never see them again after your stay anyway, so don’t feel bad. And it’s much better to feel bad than struggling along with someone you don’t like.

Take a guided tour or class

girl travel partner

A surefire way to meet a travel buddy that shares your interests is to take a guided tour or class in your destination.

There are many different types of tours that you can book these days from cooking and market tours to bicycle, segway or walking tours. You can also book a day trip somewhere or join one of the free walking tours that are available in most cities and which work on donations / tips.

Select a small group tour and even possibly reach out to the tour guide or company to find out if any other singles will be joining. Female-only tours will allow you to connect with other ladies who are either traveling alone or in couples which makes connections easy.

If you enjoy the tour guide and they are open to it, you even can ask to connect over drinks or a coffee after the official tour has ended. They may know some friends who would be willing to take you out and explore the area through the eyes of a local.

As one of our members says:

“Oftentimes, you can strike a conversation with a fellow traveler, perhaps by offering a compliment on their dress or their accessories, and a friendship may flourish.”

I always use GetYourGuide to book any tours and activities when traveling. They have a wide range of options, especially in Europe and North America. For Asia, I also check KKDay (Japan and Korea) and Klook, which has a wide array of options beyond the typical tours (eg. making mochi in Japan).

While Airbnb is known throughout the world as an accommodation app where you get to live like a local, they now offer Airbnb experiences too.

These are, as the name suggests, experiences and activities that you can take part in with a local in the area. From pasta making in Italy to Music history and culture tour with a DJ in Cuba, there are so many amazing and culturally specific experiences to be had.

They can be one-on-one or in groups, so you can learn about your destination’s culture, food and history and have the possibility of meeting a new travel buddy.

Meet up with a local

girl travel partner

We have already mentioned browsing apps and websites above to find a travel buddy, but there are also specific travel sites that allow you to meet up with a local.

International Greeter Association

The International Greeter Association , for instance, is a non-profit organization that allows greeters to meet with international travelers. They show you around their city, volunteering their time to give free personal walking tours.

You can sign up to the platform by entering your details as well as your interests and they will connect you to a greeter. This process can take a while, especially if you’re going to a more remote destination and have very unique interests. So plan for this.

The tours are free but you will have to pay for your own transportation, food and drinks. If you hit it off with the greeter, maybe you can see them again to find out more about the place and possibly travel with them.

Female Only Meet-up Options

A female-only option to meet locals in an authentic way is to join 5W or Women Welcome Women Worldwide.

This is a non-profit institution that’s been fostering female empowerment since 1984 and has grown to an international community of over 2,000 members  in over 80 countries.

After completing the prerequisites, you can find locals in various countries who want to welcome other women into their homes for a cup of tea and a chat.

While all ages are welcome, you won’t find any motorcycle tours or base jumping excursions here. What you will find is a group of honest local women who want to share their culture, history and a chat with other open-minded individuals.

If you’re more of a party goer, join a local meet up, festival or bar to engage with the locals. Join Facebook groups to find out where female-only or female-friendly parties are happening in the area you’re traveling.

girl travel partner

Women have been using hostels to meet male and female travel buddies ever since they existed. Why are hostels such a great place to meet other travelers?

The answer is that the setup is very social, and the number of solo travelers is high, making it the perfect place for serendipitous interactions where random conversations are bound to happen among likeminded people.

There are dormitory-style bedrooms where you will be sharing bunk beds with a few other people, the kitchen is open plan and the lounge or pool area is also open with social seating arrangements.

This takes the effort out of trying to make conversation, as spontaneous chit-chat is expected. We have a special article with more tips for staying in a hostel .

If you hate the idea of sharing a room, some hostels offer private rooms at a higher price. It means you can use the social areas to meet people and then escape to your own room when needed. There are also female-only dorms if you worry about your safety.

You can also stay in a hotel and spend the day or night at a hostel to meet people from all over the world. Even if you’re not traveling, you can visit a hostel in your own city to meet potential travel buddy candidates all in the comfort of your own hometown.

Remember that hostels do vary, from raucous party ones to tranquil meditative ones, so read the reviews and pick the right one for you to attract the right travel buddy.

Work Exchange Programs

girl travel partner

We mentioned Workaway above as an option to solve the issue of how to find travel buddies, but there are so many more legit work exchange programs you can go on to find someone to travel with.

Workaway is more a place where you can exchange small jobs for accommodation and friendship.

What we explore here is the option to actually work in another part of the world for an extended period of time from volunteering to actual paid work.

Through these platforms you get to work in an area that you are passionate about with people who are passionate about the same thing.

Maybe you want to help once captured elephants adapt to the wild again in Cambodia, or maybe you’d like to do your part in the fight against global warming through volunteer work in the Amazon. Perhaps you’d like to learn about sustainable and organic farming methods in India.

Joining a work exchange program is a great way to learn a new skill, help the environment, immerse yourself in a new culture and of course, meet plenty of new friends, both local and international.

However, compared to other options, this is more of a long term commitment as the requirements are typically for a few weeks or months.

The other volunteers working there are likely to be just like you, and could make for great travel friends you can continue exploring with when the assignment ends.

Top options for work exchange programs include WWOOF , Worldpackers , and HelpX . Workaway also provides longer term work exchanges and is a popular choice.

Volunteering

girl travel partner

Volunteering abroad is one of the best ways to travel with others and meet people who you have a shared interest with. You will find that those who chose the same volunteering opportunity you did already have a common ground and similar travel style.

However, it is important to do your due diligence and make sure that the organization you will be volunteering with is legitimate, ethical and does good rather than harm.

Unfortunately, this is not always obvious or easy to spot which is why we wrote an entire article on Volunteering programs that also includes a list of considerations you need to put each volunteering opportunity through before committing.

On a plane or train

girl travel partner

Transportation and waiting for transportation can be the most amazing places to meet your future travel buddies. You could be riding the train in India, a bus in South Africa or traveling by plane to Australia and you are guaranteed to be surrounded by other travelers like you.

Scout the area and see if anyone stands out to you as being a solo journey enthusiast. Go strike up a conversation with the usual, “So, where are you from?” and let the discussion flow.

Sometimes people just want to be left alone as they’re going home or are introverts trying to enjoy their much needed solo time but if you see another fellow traveler (and they do tend to be easy to spot) give it a go and simply say “Hi, what takes you to xxx?”.

Pro tip : For safety, don’t say that you’re traveling solo up front and wait until you’ve got to know them a bit better.

Safety tips for meeting travel buddies

While finding travel buddies on the road can be an easy and rewarding experience, you will need to use your common sense in order to know if the person is genuine or not.

  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off about the situation or the person, get out of there. Either just call a taxi and go or gently excuse yourself saying that you’re not feeling too good and need to lay down. Don’t worry about hurting anyone’s feelings, your safety is more important.
  • Don’t share personal details from the get-go : It is better to not overshare too many personal details when you first meet someone. Don’t let them know that you’re traveling solo or at least state that your friend is meeting up with you soon.
  • Always let someone know your itinerary. Let a family member, or even the hotel staff, know where you will be and at what time you’re expecting to be back at the hotel. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be flexible. Plans change and it’s okay to go along with them, just make sure you know the exact location you’re headed to if you do change course. There are travel apps to help you set up your complete itinerary and share it with your loved ones.
  • Take a photo of the person you want to travel with and post it on social media so that everyone knows what they look like. If they’re on the same social platform, tag them so that they know your followers have seen them. And if you get their number, send it to someone you know and trust.
  • When drinking, don’t overdo it. Go slow and steady and do not to leave your drink unattended. After a few nights out with the person, you can build trust, but at first be on the lookout for any odd behavior.

Remember, you always have the option of joining one of our small group, women-only tours!

Women On The Road

How To Find Female Travel Companions (For Women Only)

It happens. You’re an inveterate solo traveler but sometimes you get fed up with your own company. You don’t necessarily want to ‘hook up’ or travel with a group.

You just want some girlfriend travel.

You need a female travel companion.

Solo woman along a beach

Why would a solo traveler want to travel with someone else? Maybe…

  • it’s your first trip and you’re just not ready to go it alone yet
  • you’ve been through a crisis and you need a bit of companionship to get your mind off things
  • you’re worried about  dealing with travel loneliness  and feel you’re too shy to just meet people on the road
  • you don’t know the language
  • you’re concerned about attracting  unwanted male attention
  • right now, you’re just not in the mood for  solo travel

All very valid. But if you’re used to traveling solo, you might struggle to find people to travel with.

So where do you find that elusive female travel buddy?

The advantages of traveling with others

Let’s face it – however much you love solo travel, occasionally there can be  real advantages to traveling companions :

  • travel can be cheaper when you share
  • you’ll be better able to deal with loneliness if it hits
  • you may feel safer and more secure – safety in numbers – if you’re headed somewhere dodgy
  • perhaps you’re the gregarious type who wants someone to talk to
  • you may also be more comfortable in societies that frown upon  solo travel for women
  • you won’t have to wave around the dreaded selfie stick – someone can take your picture for you!

Female travel buddies with arms around one another

And the disadvantages

There are also some  disadvantages  to having a travel partner:

  • you may not want to go to the same place at the same time
  • you may have different travel rhythms or lifestyles (you’re an early bird, ready to hop on a bus at 6am, while your travel companion doesn’t emerge from deep sleep until lunch)
  • you may have different hopes or expectations
  • you may have different budgets, outlooks on life, interests… different everything.
  • you may be a solo traveler at heart!

Sometimes, things just happen. So let them

I met Tim and Nica in a Harare guest house, where I spent a month.

As I traveled across Africa, I reached my guest house in Blantyre, the capital of Malawi. A weak voice called my name – Tim was bent over, pale with bilharzia. He would soon fly off to recover in Kenya.

Some months later, in Kenya myself, I stayed in a part of town usually off-limits to tourists, especially non-African ones – and who but Tim should come ambling down the hotel hallway? The world was starting to feel like a small place indeed.

Months later, continuing my Africa trip to Asmara, Eritrea, I was sipping an espresso at an outdoor cafĂŠ when a group of travelers mentioned meeting a couple called Tim and Nica. I left a note in the Poste Restante (General Post Office, in pre-cellphone days) and ended up meeting them  again  later that month.

We became good friends, as people do when they keep tripping over one another across a continent. Often we traveled together, usually for a few days. Since then we’ve met up in Bangkok and Costa Rica. Or was it Stockholm… Each time I saw them, it was a joy. But after a few days, I’d be on my own again, and that was good too.

So you never know what shape your travel companionships will take…

HOW TO FIND A FEMALE TRAVEL COMPANION

What if you’ve looked at all the obvious potential travel “victims” but no one wants to go with you? Your partner, if you have one, your friends, your relatives – everyone is too busy, too poor or no one happens to want to visit the Galapagos when you do

Don’t give up: you can still  find a travel partner .

Don’t despair: there are plenty of travel resources online dedicated to helping you find someone to travel with, here are some suggestions to get you going.

  • Some of the  best travel forums , such as Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree, have threads dedicated to finding travel partners. Post a message there!
  • Ask on Facebook . Someone you know may be planning to travel too, so this is a great place to start looking for someone. Just make sure your privacy settings are accurate – set for Friends and Family, for example – so the whole world isn’t alerted to your departure.
  • Of course, there’s Good Ol’  Google . You can try searching for “female travel partner needed” and see what comes up (some of it quite questionable!) If you’re up for group travel, even for a short while, try looking into  companies that don’t charge a single supplement.

These sites (free and paying) specialize in connecting people – some are for women specifically, others for travelers more generally:

  • Women Welcome Women World Wide (5W)
  • Trip Together / Your Travel Mates
  • Trip Giraffe
  • Tourlina app
  • Backpackr app
  • Solo Traveller app

FIND A TRAVEL BUDDY: A FEW SIMPLE RULES

Please be careful. Anyone can post a note on a bulletin board, and you don’t know who is lurking behind that note. Looking for a travel companion requires discernment!

So please exercise some caution and common sense.

  • Make sure your first meeting is in a  well-lit public place  and is during the day. There’s every probability your contact will turn out to be, just like you, someone interested in traveling with another woman (rather than a criminal posing as one). But be smart – be careful.
  • Take your  cellphone  to the meeting, and let someone know where you’re going. It’s probably perfectly safe, but we’ve all heard enough stories about Internet meetings to at least be cautious. Better yet, take a friend.
  • When you’re searching online, be strict with  your profile . Fill in enough to show your compatibility and honesty, but not enough to enable anyone to find or identify you.
  • Make sure you  provide enough details  on your proposed trip – when you’re going, where, and your style of travel. Otherwise you might end up weeding through hundreds of incompatible proposals!

Dark abandoned alley - not a great place to meet a potential travel buddy for the first time

IS YOUR TRAVEL COMPANION COMPATIBLE?

You’ve made the decision to seek out a travel partner, you’ve got a few nibbles of interest from potential partners, but now, you have to narrow it down.

How do you decide? How do you take that final step that may bind you to another person for weeks or even months?

Here are some points to consider when making your decision:

  • Reasons for travel : is she running away from a bad situation, traveling to find herself, or simply out for fun?
  • Travel style : whether she’s comfortable backpacking or is more of a luxury spa traveler, whether she’s shy and retiring or outgoing and wanting to meet local people everywhere – there’s no right answer, but you need to be compatible and have the same style in mind
  • Personal rhythm : if she’s a morning person or a night person, if she needs a siesta every day or won’t even stop for meals – you need to fit well together
  • Flexibility : is she easygoing and adventurous, or rigid with color-coded itineraries prepared a week ahead of time?
  • Budget : how much money does ‘not expensive’ actually mean?
  • Likes and dislike : what she likes to do on the road – shopping versus sightseeing, lounging versus sports, spending the afternoon in a museum or bungee-jumping…
  • The ‘alone factor’ : you will each need some space, so make sure she’s not planning on being joined to you at the hip

How does she mesh with you?  What do you have in common? That’s the question you have to answer.

And then… you need some ground rules: how to resolve disagreements, how to choose destinations and accommodations, how to… everything. Things will go much more smoothly if you know how to communicate and start out with an agreed plan.

Here’s what I suggest: do a test drive.

That’s right – travel together for a short while, a day or a weekend close to home. Sharing schedules, meals and a room for a few days: that should give you an inkling of whether this will work for a longer trip.

I love solo travel (no secret there) but I don’t  always  travel on my own and when I travel with someone else – my partner, a friend, a relative – I make sure we iron out any potential areas of friction before we get anywhere near an airport.

It’s fun to travel with others for a while, but I’m soon yearning for my independence again…

Guest Post: How to Find a Female Travel Buddy

How I met my best friend on the backpacker equivalent of Tinder, took a leap of faith and hoped she wasn’t a male serial killer from ‘The Land of the Free’.

Aged 19, I was looking for an adventure. I had essentially been halfway around the world and back but as a tourist and not a backpacker. We all know the saying; tourists don’t know where they’ve been and travellers don’t know where they’re going. I would say that, for me, this was definitely the case.

My main problem was that I had watched ‘Taken’ and was not yet ready to venture to far off into distant lands on my lonesome. With all my friends being broke – on account of spending all their cash on dressing up and beer at university – it was hard to find anyone to go with at all. Everybody thought it was a great idea, jumping at the chance to travel the world but when it came down to booking the flights; people bailed. Frustrated and determined to hit the road (but not by myself!) I took to the inter-webs and the sometimes confusing land of ‘Travel Buddy’ forums.

Essentially, Travel buddy forums are well meaning yet disorganised little websites that are usually badly maintained. Often, when searching for a potential partner in crime, you will be matched with someone who hasn’t been active for years. These sites can be frustrating but are definitely one of the best places to find likeminded travellers. So, how does it work exactly?

You upload a swanky picture of yourself, fill in your bio, list where you want to go, cross your fingers (and possibly your toes) and hope for the best. If any of you have done online dating, it’s basically the same thing. I used  Trav Buddies  and  Travel Buddy . The latter has a mobile app which is handy but I actually met Nicole (my eventual backpacking companion) on the former.

Millie Guest Post Female Travel

You then search for people within an age group similar to yourself who have specified the same countries as you and send them a message. Never just send one message to the first person you meet. I had to message a good 50+ people to find Nicole. Some were psychos, a few were just incompatible, one girl lost her nerve but mainly people just didn’t message back or had already been away.

We chatted for a week or so before agreeing on a destination – it was a toss up between a US road trip or interrailing Europe. We skyped a few times and her parents popped up on screen to ensure I was not a man convincing their daughter to run away with him. They obviously were happy with the fact that I really was a vaguely presentable yet slightly clueless English lass and that their daughter could probably beat me up if necessary. With flights booked and a vague plan in place, we were ready to begin! Nicole landed in London just three weeks later and we hopped on a cheap bus to get out of the UK.

How to Find a Female Travel Buddy

We’ll save the travel tales for another time (some are rather cracking), but know that if you invest a little time and go in with a little bit of faith it’s not that hard to find someone to hit the road with you. Two years on I know that I have a friend for life, someone who will never let me down.

If your planning on finding a travel buddy online, you need to stay safe. Here’s my scrambled thoughts on how to find a reliable buddy who will always have your back and how to make sure you dont end up landing a creep.

How to stay safe online

After talking for a couple days get a name and then check them out on Facebook. You can then do a healthy bit of stalking and check that they are indeed a real person.

Don’t give out your major personal details (address, mobile number etc) until you’ve had a good chat with them. You do not want ‘Marryanne from Hawaii’ showing up at your door as Karl from Ipswich. All they need to know is your name, where you’re from and where you want to go at first.

Always meet in a mutual location in daylight like a coffee shop, a train station, an airport etc. and make sure a friend or family member knows where you are. If they turn out to be weird you can always have them come and pick you up.

If they live near you, try and meet up a couple times before you travel. Unfortunately, you can’t always find someone nearby (especially if you live in Somerset, England where everyone is waiting to inherit their parent’s farm – what more is there to life than these rolling hills, cows and cider?!) You just have to hope so try to chat a few times a week before going to make sure you’re both on the same page about general destinations and budgets. Nothing more awkward then you planning on budget hostel and street food and they’re thinking the Ritz with a daily bout of champagne and afternoon tea.

It’s hard; but for the first week or so try to make sure friends and family know where you are. Takes the fun slightly out of it but then they at least know which country to head to if you send out an SOS smoke signal.

You can always come home or find someone else. If the person you’re with just isn’t the ketchup to your fries and your more like chalk and cheese, you can always come home or go it alone. Hostels are the best place to meet people so you’ll never truly be flying solo, you’re true buddy could be in bed 8 below the people who have been going at it for hours and is sharing your pain. I’ve gone alone a couple times now and have met friends for life, experiencing  moments of awe, fear, laughter and adventure with them in the most unexpected places.

Keep an eye out for….

Spam messages – you are going to get a lot of these from random companies trying to get your details so they can send you spam.

The ‘Creeps’ – there will ALWAYS be those men (or ladies!) who will try and convince you they are lovely and to meet them for a romantic road trip for two. They will sound perfect and be that dream guy who’ll protect you from all the real psychos out there. If it’s too good to be true –IT IS! (cliché I know…)

People saying they’ll do whatever you want to – some are just looking for an adventure and don’t care where they go as long as it’s not solo. However, just be a little wary of it as you’ll never know they’re intentions until you get to know them better by chatting a little and a Skype date.

First contact – Try to use Skype rather than Facetime or Google hangouts. While they all do the same thing, on Skype they don’t need your email address or phone number for you to chat – just a username…

Finally, trust your gut. I know sometimes you wonder if it’s just nerves holding you back but you really just need to just take a moment to go over what they’ve said. If you’ve followed the steps above and there is still something not quite right about them then just find someone else. It may take a few weeks (or months) but you will find those eggs to your bacon!

Happy Travelling Gang <3

Millie traveling the Grand Canyon

About Millie:  Leaving school I had no intention to go anywhere other than 5* resorts, drink fantastically delicious champagne and be the epitome of class in all aspects of life. Three years on, aged twenty one, I am very different to the person I used to be. I’ve thrown away the heels and donned the hiking boots. Sure, I still  frequent the champagne bar (when it’s free!) but I’m less concerned about how I look and more concerned about how I feel. For all the girls out there who always say ‘I can’t’ – You can. The only person stopping you from achieving your dreams is yourself. I have skydived, surfed, trekked, swum with massive god-damn crocodiles, kissed a komodo dragon, been shot at, shot someone, tackled tumbling falls and raging rivers, camel raced and sipped cocktails in over a dozen countries. When it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone; I know my stuff. Trust me, trust yourself, hit the road, it will change your life.

Hi, I’m looking for a female travel companion for one week starting May 27th in Bucharest to see the Romanian country. Does anyone know how I may find someone with the same interest? Anything.

I’m a navy vet, I’m from Arkansas. I was stationed in Hawaii. Upon leaving military, I then went to marathon Key, lived there for 7 years. Came to Arkansas an had a home repair business. I bought a travel trailer in April 2022. Wanting to head up east coast to S.C. N.C. Georgia up to Main . Like to have female to go adventure with me. Leaving November or early December

Looking for a female travel buddy for my Bali trip planned by June 21st to 30tg June 2019

Hi Kalpana, I know you are looking for a female traveler. Let me know if you are looking for a male, I’m looking for a female traveler to go around the world.

hello Kalpana, My name is Dania (Female) I am interested in traveling in those daya well. let me know

Hi I very much enjoyed reading your story, you took a risk, an adventure something I’ve been afraid to do for a long time but now , 27, I’ve read stories of how people regret not doing the things the should had done making me she my future. I plan to find a travel companion, preferably female , thus hoping she won’t be a serial killer or crazy, like what you wrote a long time friend an unexpected one. I’m thinking about printing out a small article and posting it in hostiles to see if anyone is interested, hopefully I don’t come across creeps as I have have anxiety. I am concerned because of my transgender, born as a female, transitioning to male, thus though I prefer a female, I feel a male on the road trip will help as I don’t know how to defend myself. Giving up my department housing to do this, I feel spiritually sick being here. The universe keeps telling me to go travel… I have a cat so I don’t know whether I should give him to someone or take him with me… any suggestions… Based in Australia Perth. Leaving for good to a safer better place.

When you are ready for a travel companion one will appear. Part of traveling is taking the road as it comes and when the travel God’s are ready for you to take on a companion, you will know it. Finding a companion on an app and beginning your relationship by assuming they are an axe murderer dilutes the special bond of travel companions. Just my 2 cents.

Your two cents ain’t worth that much when this is about females finding travel buddies…

Thanks for sharing your experience Millie. This was incredibly thorough and all good points about finding the right travel companion. My experience with online travel forums has been the same. mostly confusing, outdated and rarely work. That’s why I started Tripolette. To help connect travelers with similar plans share trips together. It’s a fresh change of pace from existing solutions and you’d be pleasantly surprised by the experience, at least I hope 🙂 check it out and give me a shout if you like it! https://www.tripolette.com/

Thanks for the tip!

Very good information regarding travel

Thanks so much, Prakash!

Hi Erica, Absolutely awesome article. Btw, you are missing two big ones. CouchSurfing and GAFFL. I have always used CS before and recently used GAFFL in Australia. It was awesome. It connects people based on trips. You can start a trip or join trips. I think you can mention them in your list too.

Will do, thanks Ed!

I love Wandure app! They have amazing experiences created by awesome locals.

We love it too Lina!

Finding a perfect travel buddy is always difficult. But, having a travel buddy can make the trip more enjoyable and less lonely. It helps to have someone to split the expenses with, so you can save up for your next trip. A travel partner also minimizes risks associated with traveling alone. GAFFL (www.gogaffl.com) can be a great addition to this list. It matches up travelers with similar travel plans and ensures the safety of travelers through their well-built verification process.

Thanks for the tip, Abrar!

Hi, maybe you should add https://backpackingtribe.com/ to this list. It’s a platform where you can find not just a buddy, but an entire group to backpack together with! It’s amazing!

Thanks for the tip, Wijnand!

Hey Erika, You should think about adding Share Bus to this list – if you’re travelling in Aus! Its a shared rental of a minibus, trailer and camping equipment. They find the travel mates (other backpackers) for you. It’s totally flexible and self guided – you just join on the trip/date you want to do (i.e. Perth to Broome) and you can make your own adventure.

Hey Jade, thanks for the tip!

This is such a great list! It’s got everything except https://www.fairytrail.app , a dating app for people with a passion for adventure and can work anywhere (one can look for friendships too). You should check it out and review it 😉

The most interesting list is here to find a travel buddy. Travelling with someone is fun. And these days finding a perfect travel partner is tough task, but your list has made it bit easy.

Great post! thank you so much for sharing

Find Your Perfect Female Travel Partner: Tips and Tricks

Traveling with a companion can make your trip more enjoyable and safer, especially if you're a solo female traveler. But how do you find a female travel partner? It can be challenging to find someone who shares your interests, travel style, and budget. In this article, we'll explore some safe and effective ways to find a female travel companion, so you can have a memorable and stress-free trip.

Why Find a Female Travel Partner? Traveling with a female travel partner can provide you with a sense of security and companionship. When you're traveling alone, it can be intimidating to navigate unfamiliar places, especially if you're not familiar with the local language or customs. Having a female travel partner can make you feel more confident and less vulnerable. Additionally, traveling with someone can help you save money on accommodation and transportation costs, and you can split the cost of activities and meals.

Key Takeaways

  • Finding a female travel partner can provide you with a sense of security and companionship.
  • Traveling with someone can help you save money on accommodation, transportation, and activities.
  • You can find a female travel partner through online communities, travel meetups, and social media groups.

Why Find a Female Travel Partner?

Traveling is an adventure that many people enjoy, but solo travel can sometimes be lonely or even unsafe. That's why finding a travel partner can be an excellent option. But why find a female travel partner specifically? Here are a few reasons:

Safety is a top priority for solo travelers, and it's no secret that female travelers may face unique risks. By finding a female travel partner, you can have someone to watch your back and make you feel more secure. Plus, you can share the responsibility of keeping each other safe.

Companionship

Traveling with a partner can be a lot of fun, and female travel companions can offer a unique perspective and bond over shared experiences. You can also split costs for things like accommodation and transportation, making travel more affordable.

Single Supplement

Many hotels and tours charge a "single supplement" fee for solo travelers, which can make travel more expensive. By finding a female travel partner, you can split the cost of a hotel room or tour, avoiding this extra charge.

Shared Interests

Traveling with a female travel partner who shares your interests can make your trip more enjoyable. Whether you're into hiking, exploring new cities, or trying new foods, having a like-minded partner can enhance your experience.

Travel Style

Everyone has their own travel style, and finding a female travel partner who matches yours can make your trip smoother. If you're someone who likes to plan every detail, finding a partner who's equally organized can make for a stress-free trip. Or, if you prefer to go with the flow, finding a partner who's spontaneous can make your trip more exciting.

Travel Groups

If you're interested in joining a travel group, finding a female travel partner can make it easier to find a group that fits your needs. Many travel groups cater specifically to female travelers, and having a partner to join you can make the experience more enjoyable.

Overall, finding a female travel partner can be a great way to enhance your travel experience. Whether you're looking for safety, companionship, or shared interests, having a partner by your side can make your trip more enjoyable and memorable.

Where to Find a Female Travel Partner

Traveling with a companion can be a fun and rewarding experience, especially for women who want to explore new destinations without feeling alone or unsafe. Here are some ways to find a female travel partner:

Websites like Tourlina and Solo Female Travelers Club offer matching services that connect travelers with like-minded women who share similar interests and travel plans. Gaffl is another matching site that provides a safe platform for travelers to find a travel buddy and plan trips together.

Social Media

Let your friends and family know that you're looking for a travel companion, and they may be able to introduce you to someone who shares your interests and travel plans. You can also ask around at hostels or day tours to see if anyone is looking for a travel buddy.

Meetup Groups

Meetup.com is a great resource for finding local travel groups and events. Join a group that interests you and attend their events to meet other travelers. You can also start your own group and invite other women to join.

In conclusion, finding a female travel partner can be easy and fun with the right resources and mindset. Whether you use online forums, social media, or personal connections, there are many ways to find someone to travel with. Just remember to stay safe and use your best judgment when meeting new people.

What should you do first while looking for a travel buddy?

Many people who desire to travel around the world and see breathtaking places don’t have a suitable travel companion. And not everyone can make an announcement “travel buddy wanted” via social networks.

Most likely your perfect travel buddy and even destiny are not among your old internet friends. And this is the main reason to start looking for a travel buddy on the special project. At first pick and post your best photos, decide where you want to go and what do you plan to visit, write all hobbies, interests and plans in your personal profile and start an exciting race of making new friends all around our planet.

There are several secrets that help while choosing a travel buddy

Pay attention to people’s plans and habits. For example, if a person writes in a profile that he prefers energetic lifestyle with tons of activities and you enjoy calm and quite sightseeing – probably you won’t make a good match even if other interests are similar. If you two are early birds – that’s great, if not it could do you wrong. Imagine the situation when your buddy is a night owl and doesn’t give you a chance to rest.

So try to write a list of what you prefer while traveling. Do you like organized or spontaneous trips? Riding a car or hiking miles? Dining at home or tasting foreign cuisine? And you can also mention on what side of the bed you sleep. Make a funny note - travel buddy with left bedside preference wanted. Fortunately, your perfect travel buddy will appreciate this tiny joke. And don’t forget that sense of humor is one of the most important things in any relationship.

How to Find a Travel Companion: Safe Options and Some to Avoid

Janice Waugh

February 20, 2023 by Janice Waugh

image, solo traveler and companion hiking

Finding a travel companion can make travel better but it can also make it worse.

There was a lively debate about finding a travel partner on the Solo Travel Society on Facebook.

  • The majority of people considered this service counter to solo travel. Karen wrote: “I don't want to connect with anyone, love being solo. “
  • Some thought that there was definitely a place for it. Danielle wrote: “when it comes to hiking or camping remotely while solo, that's a little nerve wracking and I'd love to meet up with people who are in the same mindset. “
  • Some liked the idea as a means of getting around the single supplement. Mary wrote: “I like the idea of being connected to someone sometimes to avoid that “single-occupancy tax. “

Let's be clear: despite being a solo traveler, I have traveled with companions many times and had good success. It can enhance the travel experience as you discover a new destination through your own cultural lens and that of your new travel companion as well.

Yet, whatever your reason for seeking a travel companion, I suggest you proceed with caution and use the methods below. They are safe and will help increase your chances of making a successful match.

How to Find a Travel Companion: Methods I Can Recommend

There are safe ways to find a travel partner for a day, a week, or more. These methods give you the freedom of being solo and connecting to interesting people when you want.

1. Get a warm introduction from a friend.

One of the best ways to find a travel companion is through a friend or family member. Being concerned for your safety, they will only suggest that you travel with people they trust. Hopefully, you will be geographically close enough to meet each other a few times before setting out so that you can determine for yourself whether they are a person with whom you'd like to spend a lot of time.

2. How to meet the right travel companion along the way.

This has happened to me most often in hostels, but it doesn't really matter where you meet them. The point is that you meet a travel buddy as you travel, not before. You get to meet them in person and spend a few days together sharing meals or day tours before committing to anything longer. Spend the days in the public sphere and return to your own safe accommodation every night. Eventually, you can decide whether this is the right person for you to travel with.

3. Let your tour/cruise company connect you with a travel partner.

If your goal is to avoid the single supplement on a tour or cruise, ask the travel company to partner you with another solo traveler. Most companies will and, if they can't, they'll give you your own room for no additional charge. See our Deals  page for tours and cruises with no or low single supplements.

4. Use Meetup.com to find locals who want similar experiences

Meetup.com is a fabulous resource for solo travelers to meet people of similar interests. These are most often locals, not people to travel with. But, locals! How great is that? I used Meetup.com and found people to hike with in Hong Kong.

5. Book a greeter and have a local share their city with you.

International Greeters  connects you with locals who volunteer to show off their city. I've used this service in Paris, New York, Kyoto, and Chicago. It's a great way to meet and have fun with someone new. I've gone cycling, shared lunch, and shopped with greeters.

6. Women Welcome Women World Wide

This is an international community of 2,400 people in over 80 countries. They are mostly women over 60 who want to travel more often and meet locals, so they host one another for a tea or a stay as they travel. Read  Women Welcoming Women: A Gateway to International Friendships .

7. Take a day tour or a class to find a travel companion.

If social is what you're looking for, schedule in time for social activities. Day tours and group lessons give you a social experience. Perhaps you'll meet someone with whom you'd like to spend more time. Read How to Travel Alone Without Being Lonely: 10 Tips & 6 Short Stories .

3 Safety Rules for Traveling with Someone New

Traveling with someone you do not know really well requires a few safety tips, especially if you're traveling independently:

  • Stay in public. When you are with someone new, stay in the public sphere for at least a few days. You need a bit of time to get to know them before renting a car together or sharing a hotel room. Eventually, determine whether this is a person with whom you truly feel safe.
  • Be proactive . Choose who you want to spend time with. Make your own decisions rather than responding to invitations from others who might have agendas of their own.
  • Don't be rushed into a decision. If you are considering traveling with someone, don't be rushed into the decision. If the idea comes up but they say that you must decide by a time that is less than comfortable for you, decline the opportunity.

Apps/Sites for Travel Companions: My Concerns

There are a number of apps and websites that will help you find a travel partner. I have concerns about them for the following reasons.

  • Compatibility . Just because you're going to the same destination does not mean that you're compatible with someone. You may not discover until you're into the trip that you don't share the same interests or ways of exploring, never mind the rhythm of your travels. This can make for a miserable trip.
  • Catfishing . A catfish is someone online who pretends to be someone they're not. Without a real life connection, there is no way to know who is real and who isn't on social media. This could put you in a vulnerable situation where the person you thought was going to be your travel buddy is actually expecting to hook up, is not who they pretended to be, or worse.
  • Misunderstandings . The potential for a serious misunderstanding is another reason I don't promote the idea of finding a travel partner on an app. Your new travel partner may not have had any intention of deceiving you and may not mean to cause you any harm, yet they may have different hopes for the trip than you do.
  • Telling the world you're solo . By participating on an independent matching site and sharing your itinerary you are telling the world that you are traveling solo and where. While I don't hide the fact that I'm solo while I travel, for safety reasons, I don't broadcast it either.
  • Sites/apps can get too much personal information . In an effort to increase member safety, some sites go through a variety of verification steps, including gathering government ID information. This raises identity safety concerns.

Because I can't promote the sites that help you find a travel partner (I don't have experience with them), I'm not giving you a list. However, if you are still interested, you will find a list on Google. If you do so, I hope you'll be cautious with a new travel partner and read the Solo Travel Safety section of the site before leaving.

Sharing is caring!

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Were you looking forward to a trip with your friends, only to find out that they had backed out last minute? Wondering how to find a travel companion online? Even if your family and friends' schedules don't match yours, your vacation doesn't have to be ruined because of it. GAFFL can help you to find the perfect travel companion for your next adventure.

The best way to find a travel buddy on GAFFL is to search for your desired destination and browse through thousands of user-generated trips created by solo travelers around the world.

A good travel companion is someone who has a similar itinerary to you. It's also someone you think you'll get along with.

Every user on GAFFL has a profile where they list their interests. If you and your potential trip mate share some common interests, it’ll make your trip go a lot smoother.

It's also important to have a similar budget in mind. If your travel companion wants to do more activities and eat at expensive restaurants but you can’t afford it, it can lead to an unpleasant trip for the both of you.

When browsing trips on GAFFL, make sure to read through the trip details to learn more about the trip and determine if the activities are something you want to do and can afford.

If you like a trip on GAFFL, simply click 'Connect,' and you'll be able to chat with your travel buddy right away. If you have your own travel plans, you can start your own trip and others can request to connect with you!

Finding the right travel companion online can be difficult for solo travelers. GAFFL, on the other hand, makes it very simple. Use our world-class real-time messaging system to get to know your potential travel partner. Chat with them to see if they'd be a good travel companion for you, and then plan together, meet up with your travel buddy, and start exploring together.

girl travel partner

GAFFL is the best website/app for solo travelers looking for travel companions online because we prioritize our travelers' trust and safety. Our multi-step verification process includes social media, phone number, and a valid government ID, so you can be confident in your potential travel companion. With adventurers from over 190 countries, you can connect, chat, and find the perfect travel buddy to meet up with on GAFFL.

Solo travel is great. But there are some times that I do not recommend someone travel solo and where I personally try my hardest not to travel solo. Some examples of this relate to safety, like hiking a trail that doesn’t have many people walking it each day, or being in certain destinations where I’ve heard from others that it’s difficult as a solo female.

Other examples relate to expenses, like taking a road trip and renting a car. Situations like these are where I think something like GAFFL is a great idea. With GAFFL, you can find a group to go on that hike with or split that car rental with!

I think GAFFL plays a role by allowing solo travelers to find travel buddies when needed. Though solo travel is a great way to travel, there are some experiences that are better enjoyed with more people (some don’t even allow for solo).

Friends and families are not always available to travel with, and sometimes the interests do not align for travel. Or sometimes you just want to socialize while still being solo most of the time. I think GAFFL helps solve these problems.

One of the things that hold people back is that they don’t have a partner or a best friend to travel with and they feel scared and uncertain to travel alone, especially long-term. GAFFL helps with that!

Another thing that holds people back is the perceived cost of travel. While travel doesn’t have to be expensive, it’s always more affordable when you can share the cost of accommodation and groceries with someone else. Again, GAFFL provides a solution for that!

We truly believe that the best memories and experiences are the ones that are shared with others. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known someone for an hour or your whole life, when you do something badass together it’s sure to be a time you won’t forget.

Making connections and becoming friends with people all over the world is such a powerful tool to have when traveling. One day maybe you’ll visit your new friend in their homeland. Some of the best trips happen when you have a friend playing tour guide in their country.

GAFFL is a really cool opportunity to enrich your travels with like-minded people who will push you to get out of your comfort zone. No matter what type of personality you have, making new friends on the road is easier than ever.

I think this is a fabulous idea because the things that can get expensive while solo traveling can usually also be easily split between people. If you aren’t a hostel fan, it would be awesome to have people to split hotels and Airbnb with.

If car rental is the cheapest way to get around a destination, it would be ideal to have others to split the costs with. But most importantly it always makes the experience that much more memorable when you have new friends to share it with.

7 Ultimate Ways to Travel with Your Partner for the First Time

After years of traveling solo, I finally got a chance to travel with my beau. And here's a warning, there are some adjustments that you need to make when you travel with your partner for the first time, especially when you get so used to being a solo traveler !

So far, I've spent a month and a half traveling with my partner in total. It's not a full-time travel, since my boyfriend works 9-to-5 , but we managed to be together for a month in Southeast Asia without killing each other and a short trip around Turkey (also known as Turkiye) recently seems to make us long for our next journey to travel together as a couple.

In this post, I'm going to share some ways to travel with your partner, based on what works for me and my beau. So, here are some tips for traveling as couple travelers for the first time!

Table of Content

How to Travel with Your Partner for the First Time

Traveling with your partner can be a make-or-break in your relationship, because I believe traveling will eventually reveal your true color as an individual that you may find either the red flags or the reason for you to lean on to them when things go wrong.

For me, traveling is the only way for me to even be with my boyfriend in the first place since we've been in a long-distance relationship for almost one year now. Just like probably every couple who started planning to travel together, we were both nervous that we were going to end up killing each other on the trip. Thankfully, it didn't happen so here are some things that I think work when it comes to traveling together as a couple!

Our first-time trip as a couple in Bangkok, Thailand.

1. Be transparent about your traveling style

Before planning a trip together, be clear about your traveling style and preference so that you can anticipate what could possibly become a problem when you travel together. It will probably be easier if you occasionally travel before, so you get the hunch on what you like and what you don't when you explore a new place on your own or with a partner.

In my case, I know I'm not one for a fixed itinerary. I like to travel slowly and explore to see what I really want to see about the place. I'm quite price-sensitive when it comes to accommodation , so I tend to focus more on affordability and comfort. The same goes for meals, as my Southeast Asian gene isn't really fussy about hygiene that I could almost eat anything without having a problem when I travel.

My boyfriend is pretty much the opposite in a way, as he'd rather list all the places he wants to see each day, although he's quite flexible on whether we can visit everything on the list that day. He prefers comfort because he thinks that's the point of being on holiday, on top of that he's also a picky eater so while he's up to trying new food, his stomach might not respond to it the same way as I do.

When you know what's the deal with your partner, you tend to be more prepared on D-day and it will also help you find the common ground on what you want to do or where you want to go.

Communication is the key, so talk it out and see how you can manage all these differences in your traveling style. Trust me on this, the communication during the travel planning will definitely trigger your instinct whether your first trip as a couple will be a success!

2. Be prepared to compromise

A 4-star hotel where we stayed in Chiang Mai, Khum Phucome Hotel where we booked it as a banter for Valentine's day.

So you know how compromise is the key to any kind of relationship. Well, so is it when you plan to travel together with your partner.

Love needs some kind of sacrifice, and that's the truth. And if it's to compromise and adjust your thing to theirs, then so be it. In my case, I tend to be more careful about picking the place to eat when we travel, though in the end, my boyfriend ended up getting diarrhea anyway when he got home. Which I find weird, because he was just fine when we were together and as soon as he got home, he literally had to get some additional sick days for almost two weeks.

Since I told my boyfriend that I'm price-sensitive when it comes to choosing accommodation, he compromises to pay the bigger cut for accommodation so we can afford the place that he prefers as long as we stay on a budget.

Just like any relationship in general, in order to make it work, you need to work as a team to cater to each other's needs. Be ready to compromise, because if there's anything I've learned from traveling with my beau in the past few months, some people are just worth compromising for.

3. Respect each other's space

My partner and I are introverts, so having our own space is important for us respectively, and we try to respect each other's space despite being together for the whole trip. On our first trip together, we booked an apartment with two separate bedrooms just to make sure that we had our own space whenever needed. Not to mention that I occasionally still have to work in between our travel.

girl travel partner

Some hotel rooms that we stayed in also come with twin beds, although we mostly booked rooms with a double bed. I mean, come on… What's the point of traveling together as a couple if you can't have the intimacy you deserve after a long day of traveling, right? 😛

When we traveled, we never really argued about anything. Maybe once or twice when we were in a really bad mood. But it was never too long. More often than not, it was also because we still got our own space to cool down despite being together 24/7 on our trip.

4. Split responsibilities and make them accessible to everyone so you can hold each other accountable

Relationship is all about teamwork, and planning a trip together as a couple is no different. Split the responsibilities, and hold each other accountable so that instead of micromanaging every move, you can give each other feedback on how to make the trip easier and more fun for everyone.

As we have to plan our trip online since we're in a long-distance relationship to begin with, we take advantage of the vast technology there is to plan a trip for us.

We usually create a Google Sheet and make it accessible for both of us. We always make three sheets on the Google Sheet and label them accordingly: Marya (me), Sam (my boyfriend), and Us.

My boyfriend and I at the Golden Triangle, Thailand.

My responsibility is to usually list the accommodation where we're going to stay as well as the pros and cons for each accommodation, while my boyfriend's responsibility is to usually do some research on where to go or what to do in our destination.

We'll give each other heads up when we update the sheet, so when we have a video date, we will brainstorm the best way to visualize our trip before adding the list in the sheet that's labeled “Us.” We usually fill the latter when we both agree about things so we have all the information needed for our trip there, before finally making the final draft of our itinerary for each day of our trip together as a couple.

In terms of money, we also use the TravelSpend app to track our expenses so it will be easier for us to settle our “travelimony”, basically the money we owe each other after our travel. LOL. As we both use Wise , we can also transfer money easily for all the transactions needed for our travel.

I think it's a great way to make sure that each one of us has a say on things before we decide anything, and I think that it's also fundamental to contribute to making sure that the first time you travel with your partner will be a success!

5. Make time to socialize with other people

If there's anything I've learned about having some secret, toxic relationships in the past, it is that you can never know the true person behind your partner until you're going out publicly as a couple in front of other people, sometimes strangers.

So, while being on a romantic vacation seems like a great way to spice up your relationship, remember that this is not your honeymoon… At least not yet. So, instead of focusing on quality time just the two of you, make time to socialize with other people, be it with your friends or even new people.

A night out with my friends in Mersin, Turkiye.

When we were in Chiang Rai , we decided to join a Thai cooking class where we could connect with new people so we wouldn't get stuck being with each other as an item. We also managed to get on a double date with my university friend in my hometown, and we had our first Couchsurfing experience together when we met Ali in Canakkale, Turkiye , recently.

I think socializing with other people will also test your relationship in a good way, because you'll know your partner's character more when you don't stay inside your own bubble during your whole travel.

6. Add a lazy day to just stay in and do nothing

After all traveling and socializing, it's important to spare some time to unwind and do nothing even during your trip. Plan a lazy day to stay in, so you can enjoy each other's presence more than just exploring a new place together.

On this day, it will be a free day for both of us so you don't even have to go out if you don't want to. Maybe it's time to dive deep into Netflix and chill on this day, or you can plan a day to make a romantic dinner just the two of you. Cook together if you can, if not you can also take advantage of UberEat or anything alike in your destination.

I genuinely believe that the best kind of quality time is when you can be alone together without any pressure, possibly doing random stuff. Or maybe it's just an introvert in me.

7. Start creating memories together

Last but not least, don't overthink it. Planning is the key, but overthinking the possible result of traveling with your partner for the first time will only stop yourself from starting to create memories and exploring the world together.

Be open to new things that you can do together, because as much as I love traveling solo, I realized there are things I miss out on when I travel solo. For instance, I can get a much better accommodation for a lower price as I split the cost with my partner.

And while my boyfriend isn't exactly someone who could take Instagram-worthy pics, he's actually the one who would go post the pics on his Facebook so my mom could lurk in once in a while about what we do and where we go.

After falling sick while traveling solo and getting my wallet stolen , I know how comforting it is to have someone else beside you when you travel, so I'm glad that I've finally got someone with whom I could share my travel memories together!

FAQ about Traveling with Your Partner

In this section, I'm going to answer a few frequently asked questions about traveling as a couple and traveling with your partner, so you can see how it is from my perspective and whether it's your cup of tea. So, here we go!

Is traveling with your partner a good idea when you're not married?

Traveling with your partner before marriage is frowned upon, especially if you come from a strong religious community. However, I see more benefits than downsides when traveling as couple travelers.

First of all, traveling together can reveal your compatibility as a partner as well as an individual. It exposes you to new things that you need to overcome, together and respectively. It brings out your strength and weakness as a unit, in which you can portray how you could live with them in the future and whether there are some icks that you may need to communicate before taking your relationship into the next step.

I know reading map is my weakness, and I'm glad that my boyfriend, despite being slightly dyslexic, he's actually better at reading maps than I am. While traveling together, we also slowly learned to manage finance together so if we ever get married one day, we'll get used to it in a way.

All and all, I definitely recommend traveling with your boyfriend or girlfriend once in a while because not only will it give you the opportunity to get away from your typical routine in a new destination, it can potentially make your relationship stronger than ever.

Me and my boyfriend in Canakkale, Turkiye.

How long should you date before traveling together as a couple?

It may vary for everyone, but I would suggest not traveling together too soon as a couple. I mean, some people made it to travel as a couple as soon as they met, but like I said before, traveling with your partner can be a make-or-break for your relationship so it's better to give some time to make sure that you know your partner as an individual.

My first trip with my ex was a bit too soon as I traveled with him when we only knew each other for a month, and it didn't end well.

My boyfriend and I only started the idea of traveling together eventually on the second month since we started talking to each other, and then when he calculated the soonest time he could take a long leave from his work, he said it could only be around five months from then. So we managed to get to know each other during that period, and we kinda expect what will happen when we travel together.

In my case, I'm happy with the result and I think before anything else, having a strong connection with your partner is the one that you need the most before deciding to travel together as a couple.

Who pays for the trip when you travel together as a couple?

Finance is a sensitive topic as a couple, but it's important to talk about it. So the best way to do it is to communicate with your partner about how you settle your travel finance fairly.

Again, it may vary for everyone because some people may be able to fund all the trips for two people, while others may split the costs based on their agreement as a couple. Whichever that is, there is no right or wrong for this question because it all depends on how you communicate with your partner.

It's also another reason why I would encourage couples to travel together. Because you're forced to be transparent about finance and all the sensitive issues that have the tendency to showcase their vulnerability. I mean, it's a bit hard to talk about my finances with other people, but I'm glad I can be honest with my boyfriend.

However you think the best to split the cost, it'll definitely encourage teamwork between the two of you. So, be ready for it and see how you can thrive together as a couple traveling together!

Traveling with your partner is an incredible way to deepen your relationship as a couple to the next level. When you decide to plan a trip with your partner, it means you're ready to let out the thin layer that goes between you when you don't have to deal with each other all the time.

When you travel together, you can share each other's interests while also working on the plan in a way that it can be fun for both of you. It's a great way to bond, and you'll see the true color of your partner in a way that you can see the real them without any filter.

The important thing is to work as a team, while supporting each other so you can thrive together in the whole trip. So, are you ready to hit the road and plan your first trip as a couple traveling together?
