3 Days Masai Mara flying Safari - Mombasa

Our 3-day flight safari with Mombasa Air Safari was organized by Brian Kazungu. Everything went well. The transfer from the hotel to the airport, the domestic flights and the Governeurs Camp were a complete success! The tents of the camp are located directly on the river Mara. If you step out of the tent, you can admire hippos and crocodiles in the river. The camp has no fencing, so some warthogs ran through the tents. But occasionally hippos should be on the road at night. But no fear! There are always rangers with guns near the tents. Lunch at the camp is served outdoors. The service and the quality of the food is great! From the table you can see the Masai Mara and of course the animals! Giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs and zebras could be seen relatively close. Dinner is served by candlelight in an open tent. A very nice atmosphere! Coffee and cookies are served at the tent in the morning. Then it goes on morning game drive. We did not have the right breakfast at the camp, but in the wild on the hood of our Jeep. This is not only very adventurous, but also saves a lot of time, so that our Frühpirsch lasted 5 hours in a row! There are animals in huge herds! How many lions we saw, then we did not count! Unfortunately we have not seen a rhino, but 2 leopards. It was just unforgettable hours in the Masai Mara! We can only recommend this tour! Book with Bryan and you will spend wonderful days!

Experience an Air Safari Through Kenya

Simon Penfold, my Scenic Air Safaris host, was right. Through the window of our 10-seater plane, I watched a herd of elephants saunter across the Masai Mara plains with slack-jawed astonishment as we made our way to the landing strip.

It was an unforgettable beginning to my first trip with Scenic Air Safaris , a company that whisks away passengers on a private plane across Kenya , and delivers them to luxury safari camps with scenic overlooks and exquisite food and drink. But the company ethos spans well beyond pampering its guests. The driving force behind the trip is simple: Educate privileged and influential safari-goers to the plight of wildlife highlighted throughout the trip. To achieve this, trained guides, conservationists, and scientists take guests on game drives to highlight an endangered animal each day. Here are a few of the top experiences I had on the trip:

Lions of the Masai Mara

When we landed in the Mara we were greeted by our Maasai guide, Dominic Matay, and David Mascall, a Nigel Thornberry-esque conservationist. As Dominic employed his eagle eye and out-of-this-world tracking skills to spot wildlife, David regaled us with stunning facts on the animals we encountered, namely lions. The Masai Mara is famous for its abundance of big cats, wildlife, and an ecosystem that boasts the highest density of lions in Africa, according to research published in Conservation Biology . It doesn’t take long to find a pride lounging in the shade or gnawing on the remains of a recent kill. Over the course of just a couple days, we counted more than 30 lions.

Low Level Flying

The most unique experience offered by Scenic Air is the transportation to each new location. Flying is a time-efficient way to get to the remote lodges where we stayed, and were like mini safaris in and of themselves. For example, the captain would casually drop to 30 feet above the ground to fly along a river while pointing out landmarks and animals from the window.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in the Sarara

The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the only wildlife orphanage in Africa that is owned by the local people. Opened just a few years ago, the goal of the sanctuary is to reintroduce elephants and other orphaned animals into the wild. We arrived at the sanctuary just in time to witness the day’s first bottle feeding. Impatient baby elephants burst through the gate and ran to their respective caretakers to guzzle down formula from an elephant-sized baby bottle.

Elephants of Samburu

Perhaps the most intense experience of the trip happened when a massive bull elephant stared me down from a few feet away. He was deciding if it was worth his time to destroy the truck I was in or continue on with his business of trying to mate with a young female nearby. We were in Samburu National Park spending the day with the Save the Elephants organization. Save the Elephants is a research and advocacy organization working to eradicate poaching and improve elephant-human relationships. Our guide for the day spent countless hours monitoring and watching the elephant group he took us to. His familiarity with the elephants allowed us to safely get close to the animals and predict what each elephant in the group would do.

The Grand Traverse is approximately 50 minutes of flying time, but please allow one hour in total.

Please advise us if you are over 130kg so we can make the required plans to avoid disappointment.

Pukaki Airport

Lake Pukaki Airport is located on State Highway 8, three minutes from the town of Twizel. Air Safaris has a small base there and can pick up or drop off passengers before or after the Grand Traverse.

Glentanner Park

Glentanner Park Airport is located only 18km’s from Aoraki Mt Cook village. Air Safaris use Glentanner for inter airport pick up or drop offs before or after the Grand Traverse. This is especially convenient for tours operating to a tight schedule.

Mount Cook Airport

Mt Cook Airport is close to Aoraki Mt Cook village. Air Safaris use Mt Cook for inter airport pick up or drop offs before or after the Grand Traverse. This is especially convenient for tours operating to a tight schedule.

Air Safaris Franz Josef Airport

Situated in the heart of glacier country. Air Safaris owns and operates an airfield approximately 8km west of the Franz Josef township and a bookings and information office in the Franz Josef town centre.

Air Safaris Lake Tekapo Airport

Air Safaris main base and airport facility (since 1975) is located alongside the main highway 4km west of the Lake Tekapo township. Our airport has plenty of free parking, toilets, WiFi, coffee and has a great area for non fliers to sit and enjoy the view. A sales and information office is situated centrally within the small township.

Lake Pukaki

Lake Pukaki is the largest of the three glacial lakes in the Mackenzie basin. It’s fed from the Tasman Glacier via the braided Tasman River. On clear days the views across Lake Pukaki to Aoraki Mt Cook are stunning. It has a maximum depth of 70m and like Lake Tekapo and Lake Ohau has the distinctive turquoise blue colour created by finely ground glacial rocks called “rock flour”.

Aoraki Mount Cook

“Aoraki” – the cloud piercer. New Zealand’s highest mountain at 3754m (12,316 ft). Permanently covered in snow and ice, it was first climbed on Christmas day in 1894. Get up close to Aoraki Mt Cook from your very own window seat on an Air Safaris Grand Traverse.

Mount Tasman

Mt Tasman is New Zealand’s second highest mountain at 3497m (11,475ft). The Balfour icefall and glacier on Mt Tasman’s western flank is just one of the stunning views you’ll see from an Air Safaris Grand Traverse.

Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier / Te Moeka o Tuawe is 13km long descending from 2600m down to the rain forest just 300m above the Tasman Sea. The massive Fox Neve snow field is a stunning highlight on the Air Safaris Grand Traverse.

Franz Josef Glacier

The Franz Josef Glacier descends from the southern alps into the rain forest of the West Coast. Maori legend has it that the glacier was formed by “the tears of Hine Hukatere” when her lover Wawe was swept away in an avalanche. Viewing the glacier from above is a highlight of an Air Safaris Grand Traverse.

Tasman Glacier

29km long with ice up to 800m (2600ft) deep, the Tasman is New Zealand’s longest glacier. Moraine (rock and gravel scraped or fallen from the valley walls) covers the ice for much of its length. At its terminus is a glacial lake 150m deep often filled with giant floating ice bergs. Lake Tasman feeds the braided Tasman river and Lake Pukaki.

Murchison Glacier

At 16km’s in length, the Murchison Glacier is New Zealand’s second longest. It flows in parallel valleys the Tasman and Murchison Glaciers are separated by the Malte Brun range. This range is dominated by Mt Malte Brun 3170m (10,400 ft).

Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo covers the first part of your Air Safaris Grand Traverse. Glaciers grinding against rock produce a fine powder called “rock flour”. When washed into the lake this is what produces the stunning turquoise colour. Lake Tekapo is 120m deep and has an average temperature of 7 degrees C. In the summer months it is popular for boating, water sports and trout and salmon fishing.

Lake Alexandrina

Famous for its rainbow and brown trout fishing, this spring fed lake provides a striking contrast to the turquoise blue glacial waters of Lake Tekapo. Rowing boats are the only mode of transport on Alexandrina as sail and motor boats are prohibited.

Lake Tekapo Village

Nestled on the southern shoreline of Lake Tekapo, the village is home to 350 permanent residents. It is dominated to the west by Mt John. Lake Tekapo village is the home of star gazing in New Zealand. Having one of the clearest night skies in the world it is an “International Dark Sky Reserve.” The village hosts thousands of visitors from all over the world. The “Church of the Good Shepherd” on the lakefront is the most photographed place in the country.

Air play Moon Safari review: Spectacular, unique, and still revolutionary

W hen Air released their 1998 debut Moon Safari , there was nothing else like it. The French duo – Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin – had conjured an electronic masterpiece full of refined retro-futuristic pop and gentle psychedelia that became essential listening across all sorts of disparate groups, from comedown ravers to the middle-class dinner party set via Radio 1 and film soundtracks. It was utterly of the moment, inspiring countless imitators. That it was all conducted with a chic Parisian insouciance only added to the allure.

But if the record was a unique achievement, it is similarly hard to think of anything quite like their spectacular recreation of the album on the UK debut of a belated 25th anniversary tour. Last night in the opulent setting of London’s magnificent Coliseum, Air brought to life their grand statement in thrilling, emotive, transformative fashion.

Ever the aesthetes, the staging was immaculate. In keeping with the album’s themes – nostalgia for the pair’s 70s childhood and the promised new space age that never materialised – Air, dressed all in white, performed from inside a white rectangular box, a sleek and sophisticated base from which tasteful lighting and otherworldly visuals could emerge. It often brought to mind Kraftwerk recreating 2001: A Space Odyssey .

The immersive setting enhanced the sense of wide-eyed wonder in the music. Air were joined by an impressively agile and powerful drummer and Moon Safari ’s inventiveness came to the fore. Opener “La femme d’argent” began as a lounge track, unfurling leisurely above Godin’s typically precise yet loose bassline before Dunckel added layers of noise. By the end, it had become a swirling psychedelic onslaught.

The hits – a sumptuous “Sexy Boy” and giddy “Kelly Watch the Stars” – sounded invigorated. It was a reminder of how ahead of the curve Air were: at the time, vocoded vocals were still rare in popular music; Moon Safari pre-dated Cher’s “Believe” by nine months. That said, Godin used a vocoder to sing the luxurious ballad “You Make it Easy” (its original singer, Beth Hirsch, was absent), and it was the only moment that didn’t enhance the feeling of the record (the cut-up sampling of Hirsch’s voice for “All I Need” worked far better).

If past Air concerts were a bit too nonchalant for their own good, then last night a sense of occasion brought out, if not quite showmanship, a certain personality that hasn’t always been evident. Dunckel, stationed between two sets of keyboards, often faced the crowd and played both at the same time in an impressively offhand manner. For his part Godin strayed around the stage as he swapped guitars, all smiles and lost-in-the-moment grooves. When an excited audience member shouted “we love you!” during the twinkling intro to “New Star in the Sky”, it could have killed the moment stone dead. Standing at his keyboards, Godin smiled and raised a fist in salute. After album closer “Le voyage de Pénélope” – a wavey, frantic finale – the pair could barely contain their joy at the standing ovation.

After the success of Moon Safari ,Air were so desperate not simply to remake it that, in recording the divisive 2001 follow-up 10,000Hz Legend , they locked all their previous equipment in a cupboard and threw away the key. A wisely chosen second set, then, plucked the highlights from the rest of their catalogue (notably nothing later than 2004). The melodious alt-pop songs of 2004’s Talkie Walkie – the wistful “Cherry Blossom Girl” and guitar-led “Surfing on a Rocket” – are some of their very best; from 10,000Hz Legend , the Krautrock-goes-prog “Don’t be Light” was exhilarating, as was the closing Kraftwerkian manifesto “Electronic Performers”, which ended with an onslaught of dark noise.

But it’s the Moon Safari set that will live long in the memory: an extraordinary performance of an extraordinary album.
