Review: Foton View Traveller

Foton has come a long way from peddling cheap HiAce clones for ambulance use and outdated pickups to commercial buyers. With new technology and the all-important Cummins partnership, Foton's current trucks are worlds better than the ones the local distributor entered our market with. The most dramatic change, however, is in the van offerings, with the new TransVan and Traveller taking the View nameplate to new heights. Literally.

The Traveller is a van. A very modern, very large van, but still a van. Like many Chinese vans, it shares a lot of similarities with the Toyota HiAce, styling-wise. While the bubble roof grants it bus-like interior space, it does give it a rather odd appearance, even compared to the tall-roofed HiAces plying our streets. There's also a noticeable chop in the bodywork on the side where the extra wheelbase has been added, and the overhangs are understandably large.

There are few cars as intimidating on the road as the Traveller, save perhaps for an actual bus. Full-size American SUVs are eclipsed by its bulk. The only disappointing part of the package are the rather small 15-inch wheels .

Despite some unfinished plastic trim in odd spots, the Traveller doesn't make you feel like you've cheapened out in terms of interior quality. Most Japanese box vans themselves are full of hard plastic, mind you. While vans like the base Grandia and the Urvan might offer similar seating arrangements, the Traveller's extra length and width mean that you can have a pass-through aisle between the seats and still maintain three-across seating. As opposed to the grade-school benches in other high-capacity vans, the Traveller's seats are well shaped, with full backs and reclining mechanisms. This may be a 14-seater, but comfort and space are more reminiscent of eight- and nine-seat competitors.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE

The 2.8-liter Cummins turbodiesel makes just 130hp, but short gearing and an aggressive boost profile make it very lively. There's more than enough oomph to overtake, and while the claimed top speed is a paltry 145kph, that's more due to the van's brick-like aerodynamics than a lack of power. The console-mounted gearshift is a doodle to use, though third requires a bit of rev-matching to slot in cleanly. Short gearing seems picked for acceleration and in-town use rather than long cruises. Fuel mileage of 6km/L in heavy traffic seems reasonable, given the weight and power on hand.

RIDE AND HANDLING

With a 2.3-ton curb weight , a tall driving position and long-geared steering, piloting the View is much like driving a bus. A very nice bus. There's body roll, but not as much as you'd expect, and handling and braking are both secure and tidy. The ride is actually quite soft, yet the damping is relatively well-controlled (except over the largest of bumps).

As with other forward-control vans, you turn into corners 'late' to compensate for sitting in front of the front tires, but here you have to keep an eye on your mirror, to avoid grinding the inside rear tire against the curb. Rear parking sensors are a big help when all you see in the rearview mirror are 12 headrests and the parking assist mirror mounted on the tailgate. With a full load of passengers, that mirror becomes all but useless.

EXTRA FEATURES

The Foton's specs are relatively basic. Aside from the parking sensors and the tailgate mirror, you do get keyless entry, a stereo and pretty good rear air-conditioning. Then again, given the space and size for the price, it would be rather mean to complain.

THE VERDICT

The Foton View Traveller stands as one of the biggest vans on the market, and probably the most space you can get for your money, even compared to locally assembled van conversions from the Japanese manufacturers. And in terms of quality and refinement, it's much better than these Japanese-branded mega-vans. That's not something I'd have imagined myself saying the first time I drove a Foton.

There’s no shortage of people haulers in the country, considering that there’s a huge market for them as UV Express units , rentals, school ferries, ambulances , and all-around family vehicle.

And so it goes without saying that while we will always have the Toyota HiAce and Nissan NV350 Urvan to lean back on, the market can certainly use more variety.

This means that there’s always a place for newcomers like the Foton Traveller XL in the Philippine auto sales industry. Discover what this Chinese-made van has to offer in this 2020 Foton Traveller Buyer’s Guide .

The latest version of the Foton Traveller uses the same engine as its predecessor—a 2.8-liter Cummins CRDi turbo intercooler diesel engine that puts out 148 hp and 325 Nm of torque . Powered by Blue Energy technology, this engine is Euro 4 compliant, which makes it highly fuel efficient—a very useful feature if you intend to use this van for commercial purposes. Speaking of commercial purposes, the van is able to pull up to 4,035 kgs when fully loaded.

This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that’s controlled via a console-mounted shifter. With regards to suspension, the Traveller XL is supported by a double wishbone/coil spring/stabilizer bar trio at the front and a longitudinal leaf spring/telescopic shock absorber combo at the rear. This suspension system is grounded by 16-inch wheels .

The Foton Traveller XL’s profile is very similar to that of the 2018 HiAce and current Urvan, so fitting in the market won’t be a problem for it. Considering that its contemporaries are much longer established, ‘fitting in’ instead of ‘standing out’ is probably the better strategy in terms of styling, because size-wise, it is unmatched. The car has an overall measurement of 5,990mm long, 2,320mm wide and 1,920mm tall , easily making it the biggest van in the market today. One minor gripe is that it comes in only one color— Silver .

Foton cars have certainly grown in quality by leaps and bounds. While the brand was pretty much okay with selling HiAce clones in the past, this is no longer evident in how the interior has evolved. True, plastic is still the primary trim material, but it doesn’t look cheap as it did in past models. The cabin has individual seating for up to 19 persons in a 3+3+3+3+3+4 front to back seating configuration.

Another good thing about the Traveller XL—while other high-capacity vans are content with stiff impoverished seats, the ones in this van are comfortably shaped and well-padded, with full backs and durable-looking reclining components.

The Traveller XL takes the extra effort to be more entertaining as well, as it is now equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system that allows for AM/FM radio and provides slots for USB, SD, and Aux inputs, while providing Bluetooth connectivity . You can also play movies and videos on the system.

Other convenience features include the tall roof for maximum headroom, tilting steering column, adjustable lumbar support and adjustable headrest for driver’s seat, individual back rest, rear aircon vents, adjustable intensity meter gauge backlight, powered side view mirrors, power windows, interior lights off delay, and 12-volt outlets for powering phones, chargers, and other electronic devices.

The 2020 Traveller XL’s wheelbase is at 3,720mm , which is significantly longer than both the current HiAce (2,570mm to 2,985mm) and Urvan (2,555mm). That much distance between the wheels certainly amounts to something, as passengers have a pass-through aisle that allows them to get in and out of their seat much more conveniently than in traditional vans. And did we mention that the Traveller XL is a 19-seater?

As the 2020 Traveller XL is a passenger car, it surely helps for it to have standard safety features that elevate the protection of its occupants in case of unexpected or unfortunate events. Fortunately, the van is up to the task. Basic safety equipment include dual airbags (driver and front passenger), anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, 3-point ELR seatbelts, adjustable steering column, LED third brake light, child safety lock, and central control lock . The van also adds traction control, rear under mirror and reverse sensor for enhanced safety.

The 2020 Foton Traveller XL is easily the biggest van on the market today. Commercial vehicle operators looking to maximize their earning potential may do well to give this van a thorough evaluation.

The same goes for those who have families similar in size to Kevin McAllister ’s or Ramon Revilla ’s. With a price tag PHP 1.645 million  the van is certainly a promising prospect for anyone in its target market.

• Not responsible for delays or the termination due to weather causing unsafe road conditions (ie. not salted, accidents, etc.).
• Not responsible for articles left in the vehicle.
• Balances to be paid to the driver on the trip date before the beginning of the trip.
• Delay over 15 minutes at the client's fault will incur an additional charge of up to 20 % of the fare.
• Customer Satisfaction credit will be limited to 20 % of the fare.

During my recent stay at Novotel Moscow City from 9th to 22nd February, I was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception I received from the duty manager Marika. Her friendly demeanor and efficient handling of check-in made me feel welcome and valued as a guest as always. I also want to extend my appreciation to the night manager Maria for her attentiveness and quick response to any requests or concerns I had during my stay. Her professionalism and dedication to ensuring a comfortable experience for guests did not go unnoticed. The F&B Manager Darina and her associate Yulia deserves special recognition for their exceptional service and attention towards the incredible experience. I am extremely glad with the fact that how she is concerned with every details to make the valued guest feel exceptional during the stay. The location was very central, awesome in the very center of the city. Further, it was close enough to the absolute centre of Moscow, Tverskaya Street and of course, the Kremlin and main tourist attractions and affordable;))

Perfect and exceptionally nice location for Moscow, near Firebird/Travel All Russia, sightseeing, and Red Square or Old Arbat street in the other direction. Brand-new & good looking room.

The location was incredible, at a walking distance from a celebrated red square. It was about 30 km from the airport. The staff members were perfectly fine. I loved new-fashioned and silent room here with good bed, good lighting, WiFi.

My kids and I enjoyed being there. The restaurant was pleasant with friendly staff, I ordered freshly cooked dishes. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and the staff was perfectly fine. The location was great, close to restaurants and eateries. Everything was simply good.

Reasonably large and fairly clean venue with a nice value and outstandingly accommodating and accommodating staff. Marvellous, excellent location near to the closest metro station and the Tverskaya Ulitsa, a Polish church, and Russian church onthe corner and Kremlin towers and churches too and centre of Moscow. Also, very near to the red square. Wonderful stay for the holidays.

– riding in numerous types of military armoured vehicles and overcoming woodlands, swampy areas, hardly passable roads and various obstacles in a quite hardcore way;

– driving a real tank along the specifically designed routes;

– the real military world crash course, transferring you through the history of tank battles and allowing your personal participation;

– the possibility of shooting various types of small arms (machine guns, Kalashnikov rifles) while riding in armoured vehicles.

    And, sure enough, all that will be accompanied by realistic sounds ambience and pyrotechnics explosions, allowing you to feel a surge of adrenaline first-hand. In addition, you will be provided by friendly attention and service, you will be able to taste the military field cuisine sitting in comfortable tents, and enjoy the real fun of military songs and dances.

    You will experience an unforgettable ride in the T-80, T-72, T-34, T-14, BTR-80, BMP-1, BRM-1K and Jagdpanther.
