About Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is located in the southern part of Iceland's spectacular Highlands and is one of the most impressive sights in Iceland. Landmannalaugar overlooks a jet black lava field, created by an eruption in 1477, offering stunning sights of amazing volcanic scenery. This black lava contrasts magnificently with the place itself, made of the Rhyolite Mountains, an incredible rock that creates a broad spectrum of different colors on the mountainside. That's right! According to the Sun's rays, the mountains change color, offering red, yellow, green, and pink shades. It truly is an untouched natural wilderness like no other place on earth.

Beneath these incredible colorful mountains lies a naturally occurring hot spring, from which steam rises, and it is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to take a fantastic natural bath. Hence its name, the "People's pools."

For those who chose to be picked up in Reykjavik , we will all meet together in Reykjavik, from where we will take the scenic drive to Landmannalaugar. Once we arrive, your friendly guide will give you a quick safety talk and tell you some more facts about this incredible area of mesmerizing natural beauty. Then, we will start the 4-hour hike, which is about 8-10km in the distance and offers stunning views throughout. It covers the jet-black Laugahraun lava field, descends through the luscious Vondugil canyon, and then climbs up Mt. Brennisteinsalda, whose colorful peak is typical of the area. Each spot offers incredible views and many opportunities for you to snap some amazing photos. 

Then we will start our descent: walking through the emerald green Graenagil gorge (green gorge in Icelandic), famed for its green rhyolite rocks and luscious vegetation. Then, we will visit the imposing Blahnukur Volcano (if we have time) and then take a dip in the legendary hot pool in Landmannalaugar. All of this is done to an absolutely stunning backdrop of truly majestic natural beauty: it is ineffable, and words don’t do it justice. Practical Information

• We highly recommend wearing warm clothing during the hike – sturdy hiking shoes and waterproof clothing are essential.
• If you don’t own any of these items, then we can lend you them during the booking process (please note that this is impossible on the day of the hike).

• The tour is available to all experience levels; however, we do recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness – you will need to be able to walk for around 5 mi (8-10 km) on sometimes uneven ground.
• The weather in Iceland is unpredictable – please ensure that you are ready for all weather conditions.

How should i prepare myself for a pick-up for tours.

The pickup time is stated on your voucher and therefore we recommend you to review your voucher carefully. We ask all participants to be ready from the start of the pickup time indicated as you may well be the first pick up of the day. Please be at your assigned location at the right pick up time that you chose when booking the tour. Wait for your guide at your assigned pick up location. Am I allowed to drink alcohol before or during the tours?

Alcohol is prohibited on all of our tours before and during activities. If we find the participant to be intoxicated, we will prohibit them from taking part in the activity. After the activities of the day are finished then you are more than welcome to have a drink and relax.

Are there any family friendly tours, for younger children?

Yes, we do have a tour into Langjökull Ice Cave that has no minimum age and it is a fantastic option for the whole family. As a Whale Watching with our partner company Special Tours, enjoyable tour for a family traveling with young children, these guys have an enormous success rate in seeing whales (upwards of 98% in the summertime). Are your tours rated in terms of difficulty?

We have four different categories that help participants to get a better understanding of what to expect from the tour. The categories are Easy, Moderate, Challenging and Demanding. All of our tours are rated to make it easier for you to find a tour that suits you. For further information about the difficulty ratings and descriptions.

What type of transportation is used on this tour? Will there be stops along the way to purchase a lunch?

We use a 4*4 highland bus company to transport us to the amazing Landmannalaugar and yes, we will be making a short restroom break at a roadside shop where you can also purchase a lunch to bring on the tour.

What is the distance and elevation gain?

We hike about 8 km. which is around 4 hours of hiking including a lunch break. The elevation gain is about 4-500 m. going to approx. 890 m. above sea level.

I would like to meet the group in Landmannalaugar - what kind of vehicle will I need?

You will need a 4*4  jeep to drive the roads to Landmannalaugar. These are rough F-roads and many car rental companies don’t allow you to drive on these roads so be sure to contact them beforehand to make sure it is permitted. These roads take longer to drive so make sure you allow for plenty of time. If you arrive before the group then you are in luck, enjoy the scenery and breathe the fresh highland air – you won't regret spending some extra time in this beautiful area!
