The European Tour's longest hitter is done in by distance in South Africa

1287036743

A tee shot that went too long on the par-3 17th hole set up this awkward shot for Wilco Nienaber that led to a bogey.

Stuart Franklin

Ironically, both of what proved to be the decisive moments in the final round of the Joburg Open on Sunday were shots that flew too far.

Three days after hitting the drive that echoed around the world of golf— a 439-yard bomb off the tee at the 597-yard par-5 fourth hole on the Randpark course during the opening round of the European Tour event—Wilco Nienaber arrived on the penultimate tee tied for the lead with Joachim B. Hansen. Unfortunately for Nienaber, a 20-year-old South African, that was as good as things would get. His tee shot on the 223-yard par-3 17th finished inches from the water that runs behind and left of the putting surface. A bogey, his first of the day, was the almost inevitable result from the awkward spot, the dropped shot putting Hansen one shot clear.

Perhaps fueled by adrenaline, Nienaber—statistically the longest hitter on tour with a driving average of 336.81 yards—found a fairway bunker with an iron off the 18th tee. Unable to reach the green in regulation at the 507-yard par 4, he again failed to match Hansen’s up-and-down par. Thus, the winning margin was two shots for Hansen, a 30-year-old Dane as he earned his maiden European Tour victory with a closing 67 and a 19-under-par 265 total.

For the record, another South African, Shaun Norris was third, three shots behind the new champion, with former Scottish and South African Open champion Brandon Stone among a three-strong group in fourth place.

“This is very emotional for me,” said a tearful Hansen, who had trailed by as many as three shots after Nienaber made three consecutive birdies on the front nine. “This is what I have worked so hard for. Wilco is quite a player. He hits the ball so far and has so many advantages. But I stuck to my game plan. All I could do was keep doing the things I had been doing for the first three days. And that proved to be good enough.”

1287039137

Joachim B. Hansen grabbed his first career European Tour win with a closing 67.

There was special mention, too, for Hansen’s work on the greens. “I almost never missed a putt inside six feet,” he said at the end of what was only his 10th top-10 finish in 146 European Tour events. “And I holed a lot of long ones too.”

While Hansen’s success is a tribute to his perseverance, what this 19,500,000 ZAR event (approximately $1,271,886) will be most remembered for is that tee shot Nienaber hit on Thursday.

The former South African amateur champion’s gargantuan blast, one that finished almost exactly 99 yards past Bryson DeChambeau’s average tee shot on the PGA Tour, does, however, come with an asterisk. Sitting on the eastern plateau of South Africa known as the Highveld, Johannesburg is 5,751 feet above sea level, the thin air a hugely contributing factor in how far every shot travels.

EDENVALE, South Africa — South African Keenan Davidse and Spaniard Ivan Cantero shot 8-under 64s to take the first-round lead at the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa on Thursday.

Both golfers had nine birdies and a bogey at Glendower Golf Club.

Three South Africans were tied for second after rounds of 7-under 65; Thriston Lawrence, Oliver Bekker and Louis de Jager.

A step forward for global golf: european tour, sunshine tour partner to elevate game in south africa, share this article.

golf south africa european tour

The European Tour and the Sunshine Tour have formed a new partnership that should not only elevate golf in South Africa but recognize its contributions to global golf. The European Tour announced that it is committed to improving the existing international pathway between the two Tours by co-sanctioning the South African Open through 2025, continuing to stage three Challenge Tour events in South Africa and creating several new co-sanctioned events that will appear on both the Challenge and Sunshine Tour schedules.

“For many years the European Tour has greatly valued the relationship we have enjoyed with the Sunshine Tour and today’s announcement is the next step in that journey together,” Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour, said in a release.

“Through the leadership, vision and commitment of Chairman Johann Rupert, the Sunshine Tour has not only flourished and produced many of the game’s greats over decades, it is also part of the ecosystem that is at the very core of professional golf. We have been proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Sunshine Tour on this pathway for over a quarter of a century and we very much look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come.”

The first event co-sanctioned by the European and Sunshine Tours, the Lexington South African PGA Championship, was played in February 1995. A familiar name, Ernie Els, took home the trophy that week. Since then, the two tours have combined close to 100 times.

South Africa ranks fourth on the list of most successful nations in European Tour history, behind only England, the U.S. and Spain. Several major winners have South African roots – not only Els but Retief Goosen, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, Trevor Immelman and of course Gary Player.

The move drew support from the PGA Tour, the European Tour’s Strategic Alliance Partner.

“We are thrilled to see these two leading golf organizations come together for the benefit of the global game, players and fans,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “The European Tour and Sunshine Tour each have rich histories, celebrated events and a proven record of developing some of the world’s best players. This new partnership further illustrates the strengthening ecosystem of professional golf that we have all worked together to build for the betterment of the game.”

My wife and I recently used Golf 2 Africa for a wonderful golf holiday in South Africa. They did an excellent job, sorting out pick ups at the airport, transfers to a first class guest house in Pretoria, then as a result of their recommendation we stayed at Wildside Camp, Entebeni for 4 days. Our tour guide was excellent, we saw lots of the animals, including lions, cheetah, rhino, elephants and lots of antelope. We were then transferred to Rovos Rail for 9 wonderful days of golf. Every part of the holiday arranged by Golf 2 Africa was first class.

Having just returned from a 3 week golfing holiday arranged by Golf 2 Africa, and as our group leader I would like to say just how much we enjoyed the whole trip. This is the second holiday we have booked through Golf 2 Africa and I must say the organization was second to none. The hotels and golf courses selected for us were top notch as was our guide Pete who took care of every detail. I can thoroughly recommend any holiday arranged by Quintin and his staff. We will be visiting South Africa again and will definitely let them handle all the arrangements. SUPERB!!

Magical Kenya Open - Day three digest

Everything you need to know from day three in Nairobi.

Darius van Driel was bogey-free, Manuel Elvira made his move, Tapio Pulkkanen had an arboreal ball and Ronald Rugumayo rolled on in round three of the Magical Kenya Open presented by absa .

Here is everything you need to know from round three at Muthaiga Golf Club.

Elvira and Van Driel share lead

Elvira and Van Driel will both go in search of a maiden DP World Tour victory when they head into the final round sharing the lead. Dutchman Van Driel had led after rounds one and two and carded a bogey-free 68 to get to ten under but was joined by Spaniard Elvira, who signed for a 67 with six birdies and two bogeys. England's Joe Dean, Scot Connor Syme and South African Ryan van Velzen were then two shots back as they all also look for their first victories. Elvira's older brother Nacho was at seven under alongside Scot Ewen Ferguson, South African Deon Germishuys, England's Sam Hutsby and Finn Pulkkanen.

Wood you believe it

Golf really does know how to kick you in the teeth. After losing his DP World Tour card last season, Pulkkanen was taking huge strides to get it back in Nairobi. He shared the lead after 36 holes and stood on the eighth tee in round three was still on top after making two birdies in his first seven holes. His tee-shot, however, went a long way right into the trees and after hitting a provisional, he went to find his original ball only to discover that it had somehow stayed high up among some thin branches. Luckily, the Finn managed to see the funny side - watch it all unfold below.

Rugumayo stars again

Rugumayo has been the story of the week after birdieing his last in spectacular style on Friday to become the first Ugandan to make a cut on the DP World Tour. Well on day three, he birdied three of his last four holes to sign for a 71, revealed he swapped his ball for his lucky number before making that famous birdie, and spoke of his desire to inspire the whole of East Africa with his golf. It's Ronald's world, we're just living in it.

Keita Nakajima wins Indian Open for first European tour title

  • Associated Press

NEW DELHI -- Keita Nakajima of Japan chose to focus on the European tour instead of a smaller American circuit and made the decision pay off Sunday when he closed with a 1-over 73 to win the Hero Indian Open.

Nakajima had a 2-shot lead to start the final round at DLF Golf and Country Club and made four birdies in the opening eight holes. That stretched his lead to 9 shots, and then it was only a matter of finishing. He shot 40 on the back nine and still won by 4 for his first European tour title.

"The win definitely gives me a lot of confidence in myself, and hoping now to take what I did this week and turn it into even more wins in the future," Nakajima said.

Nakajima, whose 87 weeks as No. 1 in the men's World Amateur Golf Ranking are more than anyone, won for the fourth time in the past 10 months. The other three were on the Japan Golf Tour last year and enabled him to win the Order of Merit.

Finishing as No. 1 in Japan gave the 23-year-old Nakajima a European tour card, along with status on the Korn Ferry Tour, which feeds the PGA Tour. The victory moves him to No. 13 in the Race to Dubai, and No. 9 among those who do not already have PGA Tour status.

The leading 10 players after the season get PGA Tour cards.

Veer Ahlawat of India (71), Sebastian Söderberg of Sweden (67) and American Johannes Veerman (67) tied for second.

No one had a serious chance at winning the way Nakajima started, and his only frustration was the way he finished. He took a double bogey on the 14th hole, bounced back with a birdie, and then closed with three straight bogeys.

Nakajima finished at 17-under 271.

"There were a number of tough holes on the back and I was frustrated with my play, finishing with three consecutive bogies and of course the double bogey," Nakajima said. "But fortunately I had a few strokes in the bank which I can credit back to my strong play on the front nine and the earlier rounds this week, so overall very proud of my performance."

Nakajima is the third Japanese player to win on the European tour in the past seven months. Rikuya Hoshino won the Qatar Masters in February, and Ryo Hisatsune won the French Open last September that helped him get one of the 10 PGA Tour cards.
