NEXT CANADA PHOTO TOUR IN

Canada photo tour details.

Our Canada Photo Tour , is one of our most demanded and successful trips, with several confirmed departures for 2024 and 2025 (check list above) . During two full weeks , we’ll take you through some of the most spectacular locations on Earth , in the incredible Canadian Rockies. A dream destination for any landscape photography lover, home to amazing blue and turquoise lakes, stunning peaks and lovely wildlife.

On this trip, we will be visiting the extraordinary Banff , Jasper and Yoho National Parks , among the most stunning areas around the whole world. Few places feature so much photo potential as the Canadian Rockies does . For many, this is the top destination on Earth for landscape photography. Thanks to that, we will be able to capture extraordinary images during every single day on the trip. Furthermore, we will have the great advantage of not needing to drive very long distances to move between locations; we’ll constantly enjoy the outstanding views and spots of this marvelous region.

On the other hand, we will be probably able to capture the first snowfalls of the year , together with the last fall colors . This will allow us to get incredible photos, and even photograph several of these amazing locations under very different conditions. We are true experts in the whole area , knowing the region perfectly after many trips through the years, something that will bring us the best possibilities to capture wonderful pictures. At the same time, the workshop is organized by our own travel company for photo lovers , which counts with the official license and permits to host photography tours in these National Parks . Everything will be ready to bring you the most fabulous experience, allowing you to photograph the most spectacular sceneries while you improve your photography .

What to photograph during this Canada Photo Tour?

This Canadian Rockies photo tour will be mainly focused on landscape photography , although we’ll be also practicing wildlife and night photography .

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, we will photograph unbelievable scenes , including pristine blue glacial lakes, stunning peaks , up to almost 13,000 feet/4,000 meters, fantastic falls , fabulous forests , impressive canyons , magical glaciers or surreal panoramic views . Anywhere in the area, we’ll find something photography worthy, so we’ll make the most from every single day of the trip.

Among these locations, we may highlight the incredibly precious lakes in the Rockies , each one with its particular color, from turquoise to emerald green, or intense blue. All of them will bring us extraordinary photo opportunities . Sometimes, we’ll be even able to photograph perfect reflections of the surrounding peaks on the water. We can highlight lakes such as Moraine Lake , Peyto Lake , Lake Louise , Emerald Lake or Maligne Lake . Taking wonderful pictures will be very easy at places like these.

Other incredible locations we’ll photograph include Athabasca Falls , Natural Bridge , Sunwapta Falls , Johnston Canyon , Athabasca Glacier or Morant’s Cruve , among dozens of spots with mesmerizing views of rivers, creeks, or glaciers, always, surrounded by the stunning Rockies.

Besides, we’ll also focus on wildlife photography . The area is home to elk , deer , coyotes , bald eagle , bighorn sheep , moose and both black and grizzly bears . Elk and deer will be quite easy to find, and we know some locations with very high chances to spot moose. We’ll be searching for all these species every day during the trip, so we’ll be able to photograph many of them.

Finally, due to the low light pollution, we’ll have excellent conditions to try some night photography sessions , surrounded by those amazing sceneries. If lucky , we might even be able to photograph the Northern Lights !

Why doing this Canada Photo Tour during this time of the year?

We strongly believe that late September/early October (as well as mid to late October) is one of the best seasons for a Canadian Rockies photo workshop. At this time of the year, we have several advantages that will offer us the best possible photo opportunities .

By one hand, during this period, we will probably be able to photograph some of the first snowfalls of the year . Imagine those already incredible places, covered by snow… we would get endless photo opportunities! Undoubtedly, ideal conditions for landscape photography. At the same time, the lakes will still not be totally frozen . This way, we’ll be able to capture the amazing colors of these lakes, with the snowy sceneries around us. Besides, we might be finding the great ice structures formed by the lakes shorelines, when they begin to get frozen.

On the other hand, we might still be able to enjoy and photograph the late fall colors in some of the areas we visit during the trip. The yellowish and reddish tones in the trees will certainly add special beauty to the scenes around us.

Furthermore, during these weeks, most of the roads and locations will still be open , meaning that we’ll still be able to visit almost all the top locations in the Rockies. Obviously, this also means that the area will be more crowded than in November and the winter months, but photographing the lakes at this perfect time of the year will be totally worth it .

Regarding wildlife, this will be also one of the best times of the year for it . Elk , deer and moose will look at their best during the rutting season, their breeding yearly season. This means we’ll probably have great chances to photograph these species in action .

This Canada Photo Tour is organized by the Official Travel Agency ‘Viajes Fotográficos – Dream Photo Expeditions’ ( hereinafter referred to as ‘the travel agency’).

The travel agency carefully studies and designs all the trips that we offer, always trying to adapt them to our travelers needs. All our itineraries and activities are chosen from a photographic point of view. However, the itinerary shown here is just an idea of some of the places that we will be visiting, not being contractual information about what we’ll do during the trip. The tour leaders, photo guides, other guides and/or the travel agency and organizers of the tour, reserve always the right to do any kind of changes to the itinerary and the tour, both before and during the trip.

In this sense, it will be up to the photographer/s guide/s or to the travel agency, the decision of changing any of the programmed activities, places to visit, and shooting sessions for each day, depending on factors as weather, security or light conditions, but not limited to these. We will always be in search of the best possible experiences and moments of light for the customers of this trip. However, sometimes we may decide to change plans depending on some factors. The program may also be changed in case of emergency, injury of illness of any of the participants or main photographers.

At the same time, both the photographers and the travel agency reserves the right of changing the tour leader/s, in case it’s necessary. Some of the reasons might include injuries, illness or hospitalization, severe health problems, accidents, (both of themselves as well as first grade relatives too), etc. In those cases, the agency will bring another photographer able to guide the group in the same destination.

Documentation

Each traveler is responsible of having all the documentation needed for the trip, as well as for entering the destination/s. To visit Canada, you need a valid Passport, but you may also need a visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter the country, depending your citizenship. Always check the requirements with your country authorities before traveling to a foreign destination.

The photographers and the travel agency have no responsibility about each traveler’s documentation, or about the requirements to be allowed to enter in Canada or any other country.

Travel Insurance

This Canada Photo Tour includes a basic assistance insurance. However, we strongly recommend you to bring a full travel insurance, which has unlimited or high limit money coverages in case of accident or disease.

Personal Counseling

The travel agency will give personal counseling and advice to travelers when purchasing their trip. Customers will receive a list with everything that they might need for the route, tips about how to prepare a medical kit for the travel, recommendations about the photography gear for the place, etc… At the same time, our staff will be happy to help and solve any doubt that the clients could have while they are preparing their trip.

Responsability

We are completely sure that this Canada Photo Tour will be an unforgettable experience for travelers, as well as an intensive learning process. The travel agency will always try to promote values such as respect (cultural, social and environmental). Those values will always prevail in all our trips. At the same time, ‘Dream Photo Expeditions’ will always ensure that the impact of their trips is never negative for the country, their citizens or their wildlife.

The travel agency, tour leaders, guides, or the photographers hosting the trip, will have no responsibility at all for any accident, loss, theft or damage suffered by the customers participating on it.

Each customer declares that he or she accepts all the conditions on this trip at the time he or she is doing a reservation request and/or payment for it.

At the moment of booking, the client will be required to send an initial payment of US$600 (US$863 if choosing single room). Payments can be done by bank transfer, by credit or debit card, and by PayPal. However, please notice that credit or debit card and PayPal payments are subject to a supplement fee, to cover the costs of these payment methods.

The remaining balance will be due 60 days prior to the trip. If one client doesn’t make effective any of the expected payments in the deadline, the organizers has the right to cancel the contract with that participant, without any refund, as the terms previously seen. The features that make up the combined travel contract come from the information given to the client in the brochure or program, as well as from the indications regarding this information that could have been given when confirming the reservation.

Cancelations

In case the agency doesn’t complete the minimum group needed to confirm the trip, customers will have the choice between doing the trip paying an extra supplement, or being issued a full refund.

If the travel agency needs to cancel the trip, for any reason, customers will get a 100% refund of the cost of the photo tour.

However if the client doesn’t show or cancels the trip, the following cancellation policies will be applied:

– Less than 60 days prior to the trip: US$600 (US$863 in case they had chosen single room basis). – Greater than 60 days prior to the trip: 100% of the trip cost.

Prices are based in the Exchange rates by December, the 28th, 2018. The currency may be updated until 21 days prior to the departure, according to Spanish Travel Laws, applying a supplement/discount in case of change.

Once the reservation is done by the client, and the services and their prices are confirmed by us, these prices only could be revised until 20 calendar days prior to the departure dates, only in case there are variations in the transportation costs (including the fuel prices), in accommodations, in rates and taxes referring to certain services (such as landing, boarding in ports and airports), or in monetary exchange rates applied to the trip.

RECOMMENDED PHOTO GEAR

We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

A wide angle lens will be probably the most useful lens to capture the amazing landscapes in the Canadian Rokcies. It will be great if it’s also a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for the night photography sessions.

Standard Zoom

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

TELEPHOTO LENS

A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm will be very useful on this trip. It will be perfect for capturing distant scenes, like peaks or mountain views, as well as for photographing the wildlife we may find along the roads.

LONG TELEPHOTO LENS

If you have a long telephoto lens, such as a 400mm f/2’8, or a 500 or 600mm f/4, you could bring it for the trip, as it would bring you spectacular wildlife images. A good alternative would be a zoom kind of a 150-600mm.

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.

PHOTOGRAPHY FILTERS

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

REMOTE CONTROLLER

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Given the cold temperatures, batteries will run much faster than usual. Therefore, you should bring enough batteries to avoid running out of energies.

MEMORY CARDS

We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.

PRactical Information

Is there a minimum physical level to join this trip.

This Canadian Rockies Photo Tour is recommended for anyone, no matter the age or the physical level. According to the physical requirements, this can be considered an easy trip, with no minimum requirements to join us. Most of the photo locations are located just a short walk from the places where we’ll park. We will be doing some longer hikes to get to some photo locations, but all of them will be easy and not long at all. Therefore, you’ll be welcome to join us if you are able to hike for short distances with no effort.

At the same time, there isn’t age limits for the tour, as well as your health and conditions are reasonably good.

Do I need a minimum photography level to join the trip?

There is no need of a minimum photography level to join this Canada Photo Tour. You don’t need to be a professional photographer to come to this trip, nor even having a lot of experience with your camera. All our photo tours are open to all levels, even for beginners, or unexperienced photography users. Sometimes, we even have people just taking shots with their smartphones.

One of our highlights is providing customized attention, so we will help you to get the best possible images, regardless your previous level. We’ll be there to help you becoming a better photographer!

What kind of weather can I expect during this trip?

During this Canada Photo Tour, we can expect quite cold temperatures most of the time. For the late September group, we can even have some mid to warm moments during the daytime, but at dawn and dusk, as during the night, it will be really cold. Then, for the mid October group, temperatures will be quite colder, even during the day. Average temperatures during this period are normally around 26º to 44º Fahrenheit  (-3º to 7º Celsius). However, at some of the night and sunrise sessions, we could get temperatures around 10º Fahrenheit  (-12º Celsius), or even lower! At the same time, snow will be quite possible during this trips.

Due to this, you need to be perfectly prepared for the trip. You will need a good down jacket or parka, as warm as possible. We also recommend dressing in layers, so you can add or remove layers depending on the temperature. Simultaneosly, a Gore Tex jacket or similar would be great for the snowy moments. Mountain and/or snow boots would be perfect for most of the time. Once you confirm your booking, you will also receive a guide withe the recommended gear list for this Canada Photo Tour.

Are meals included on this trip?

This Canada Photo Tour, as most of our trips, doesn’t include meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). This will give us maximum flexibility during the trip, in order to focus mainly in the most important thing: photography. Normally, we will be having breakfast in the hotel or in cafes near the area, before or after our sunrise shooting session (depending on timing). For lunch, sometimes we’ll be stopping at restaurants, but other times we’ll be buying food at supermarkets (fruit, snacks, sandwiches, etc…), and doing a picnic or even eating in the vehicle/s. Then, we will have dinner at the hotel or in town.

However, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the fabulous food in Canada. Both fish, as salmon and trout, and meat, like the buffalo sirloin or the tenderloin, will be delicious options!

Which payment options do you offer?

Currently, the main payment option we have is the bank transfer. However, if you prefer it, we also have other payment options, such as credit or debit card, PayPal or Transferwise. Please notice that these other payment options may apply a commission fee. You can ask us about these different payment options.

If you choose to pay by credit or debit card, or by PayPal, you can process your payment online, when you finish the booking process. For bank transfer payment, you just have to proceed with the booking and then, once you finish the process with the chosen payment method, you’ll receive an email with al the instructions and bank details.

What kind of accommodations will we have?

During this Canadian Rockies Photo Workshop, we’ll be normally staying in 3 or 4 star hotels, or in lodges. Each traveller will be staying in a double twin shared room, shared with another participant of the tour. Rooms will always include a private bath.

If you come with another person to the trip, you’ll share the room, However, if you are traveling alone, we’ll choose a roommate for you between the other participants in the trip (always same genre). Anyway, you will also have the chance to choose a single room for you, paying an extra supplement. Contact us for all details.

Can I join this photo tour regardless my country of residence?

Anyone can join this Canada Photo Tour, no matter your country of residence. Our main travel agency is settled in Santander, Spain, but our trips are open to customers from countries all around the world. Therefore, we may have clients from different places in our photo tours.

This Canada Photo Tour will begin at Calgary International Airport, in Canada. Therefore, all the participants need to be there at the first day of the tour, getting there from their country of residence, and there is no need to travel to a particular town to meet the group before getting to Calgary.

What else should I bring to the tour?

Once you have confirmed your booking for this Canada Photo Tour, we will send you the trip info with a recommended gear PDF guide. This will include suggestions not only about the photography gear, but also about the clothes and accessories you might need during this photo tour. To sum up, you won’t have to worry about anything, since our expert photo leaders and guides will inform you about everything you will need, so you can enjoy your travel as much as possible!

As a first tip, we would suggest you bringing a light color down or shell jacket (for example red, orange, yellow, light green, etc…). That jacket will protect you from the cold and the rain but, at the same time, you’ll look great when photographed in some of the most beautiful locations around all Canada!

César Araujo

‘This is one of the most spectacular destinations on Earth, despite it was my second time in the area, it’s still impressive. Besides, traveling here with photography purposes, with Sergio Lanza’s group, means getting the most of the visit, being taken to places that I had not been to. Sunrises and sunsets are the highlights each day and, if lucky with the colors in the sky, it makes for a perfect experience. It’s also amazing to be able to photograph the wildlife in the area, with bears, elk or moose really close.’

Paco Notario

‘If you like photography, this is the best photo tour company. Excellent professionals that take you to the most spectacular places. Your only problem will be deciding where to go between so many options.’

Luis Felipe Cortés

‘The locations they selected are incredible. Besides, their professionalism, the punctuality… Their photo tours are designed and hosted by specialized photographers, and made for photographers. But it doesn’t mean you cannot join the trip, you’ll be able to do it at your own rhythm. The way they strive with the group so everything works as expected, made me feel totally satisfied. I was in the October 20th to November 3rd, 2019, in Alberta, and everything has been satisfactory. Good atmosphere, fun and great learning, I highly recommend it. Luis Felipe Cortés, Guadalajara, Jalisco, México.’

Antonio Álvarez

‘I just remember that day back in summer 2017 when, searching the net, I found a Spanish photographer (Sergio Lanza) who was hosting a 2 week long Canadian Rockies workshop. I contacted him to join that group, but it was too late, since the trip was just 20 days away. Then I decided to join the fall 2018 photo tour. However, I was not able to join that group due to health issues, so I had to postpone my trip one more year.

I was so excited during the whole 2019, waiting for autumn to finally join this awaited Canada trip, as the date was closer. Finally, the flight day came, and when we arrived to Calgary, Sergio was waiting for us, to begin this photo adventure through the greatest National Parks in the Canadian Rockies.

All I can say is that the workshop has been fantastic, together with three other participants. Sergio’s behavior has been exemplary during the whole photo tour, being a true professional, assisting us, explaining, helping and making everything easy and always in a good mood. He has definitively been the reason why we have got back home with many extraordinary images. Undoubtedly, this has been my first tour with him, but it won’t be the last, thanks to his great work, professionalism, knowledge, fellowship, and the human treatment he has always shown with all of us.’

Chema Vázquez

‘I just want to comment that the result of this trip and of my images has been thanks to Sergio Lanza Casado, a perfect mate and host. I’m so happy to have visit Canada with him, and more of his Photo Tours will be coming! I totally recommend it, it totally fulfilled my expectations… sunrises, sunsets, bears, moose, elk, bighorn sheep, etc… a great experience, unrepeatable. Thanks Sergio Lanza, you are such an expert, it’s great to travel this way!’

O Canada, the glorious land of maple syrup, epic vast spaces and jaw-dropping moments that will rock your world! Home to five national parks and cute alpine towns, Canadian Rockies are just overflowing with dramatic mountain peaks, hanging glaciers, ethereally turquoise lakes, towering waterfalls, deep canyons, lush forests and wildlife.

So round up your gear and get ready to have your socks knocked off from all the spine-tingling beauty nature has in store for you. Simply put, great shots guaranteed.

Canadian Rockies gallery

Herbert Lake

In the evening, we will hit the road to Herbert Lake. Surrounded by deep woods, the waters of this tiny slice of paradise reflect the snowy peaks of the Rockies, waiting for the admiration of our lenses...

Herbert Lake

Vermilion Lakes

Our sunrise location will take us to Vermilion Lakes on the outskirts of Banff, offering the famous view of Mt. Rundle in the back. Reflecting in the lakes, the mountain range is a great reward for all early risers. If lucky, we might be in for some alpenglow that turns the landscape into even more amazing colors.

Castle Mountain

Sitting silently with the Bow River in the foreground, Castle Mountain will be our sunset treat. This castle-like mountain dominates the views and is one of the most imposing peaks of the Bow Valley.

Castle Mountain

Our morning agenda will take us to the pristine Bow Lake, one of the smaller lakes in Banff National Park. Boasting spectacularly colored water and a ring of peaks towering above, this site a top-notch mountain scenery.

The next spot will be about the unbelievably blue Peyto Lake. Getting its blue from large amounts of glacial rock flour, it changes color depending on the time of year and day. Another sunset spent photo shooting is another sunset well spent!

Peyto Lake

Moraine Lake

Getting up early, we’ll be headed to the famous Moraine Lake. Being one of the most iconic lakes in the Canadian Rockies, its beauty is simply out of this world and is a must-see on our list. Here, we’ll be shooting different compositions from the rock pile above the lake or the lake shore. Pure and turquoise waters, this one’s a real candy.

Natural Bridge

We’ll also go to capture the Natural Bridge with the Kicking Horse River sculpting its way through it.

Natural Bridge

Emerald Lake

Evening will see us chasing sunset at the Emerald Lake with the iconic lodge perched on its edge. This site is a great proof that Rocky Mountain Lakes are all different in color - from green to bright blue or even brownish. Vivid turquoise is the color of Emerald Lake, just you wait.

Mistaya Canyon

The greater part of the day will be revolving around the mysteriously deep Mistaya Canyon and the duo of Sunwapta Falls, both locations along the way of the iconic Icefields Parkway.

Mistaya Canyon

Two Jack Lake

The sunrise photo shoot on this day will be all about Two Jack Lake in the Banff National Park. Always worth a stop, this place is nothing short of amazing views and a lot of great shots to be taken here.

A Canadian Rockies photo tour is one of the most complete experiences for any nature photographer.

You will enjoy the wildlife, landscapes, twilight lights, night photography and with a bit of luck until aurora borealis. All this in one place, where the new world is still virgin and unexplored.

canadian rockies photo tours

We took a photo trip to the Canadian Rockies for 15 days from the end of May to the beginning of June 2017 and without a doubt, this has been the most incredible trip we have made to date.

In this photo tour, we got some of the best shots of our gallery. However, only by being able to spend 15 days in contact with pure nature, would have already made it worthwhile.

That is why we would like to return someday accompanied by others photographers. In this article, we will tell you our next guided Canadian Rockies photo tour itinerary, in case you want to join us, and we give you some tips if you decide to do it on your own.

Canadian Rockies photo tours & Workshops

The Canadian Rocky Mountain Park is comprised of four National parks: Banff National Park, Kootenay National Park, Yoho National Park, and Jasper National Park.

These parks are located in British Columbia (Kootenay and Yoho) and Alberta (Banff and Jasper).

When making a photographic trip to the West Coast of Canada, the common thing is to visit Banff, Yoho, and Jasper, since these are the most photogenic places in the Canadian Rockies.

best places to take pictures in canada

Although it is not the best destination for it, it can also be used to take a photo trip to see the Northern Lights in Canada. However, you have to bear in mind that the conditions that must be given are not the usual ones.

Even without Aurora Borealis, do not worry. The best rocky landscapes, vibrant wildlife and the darkest skies of North America are waiting for you. A Canadian Rockies photo tour is blow-minding for any nature photographer.

In this guide you will find:

Best time to take a photo trip to the Canadian Rockies

15-day canadian rockies photo tour itinerary.

  • Where to take the best photos of the Canadian Rockies
  • What photography equipment to carry
  • Canadian Rockies Photo tours
  • Our Canadian Rockies gallery

Without any doubt, I would say that the best time to attend to a Canadian Rockies workshop is from May to October.

Let’s go for points. The weather in the Rocky Mountains is quite cold in winter, freezing all the lakes and cutting off most of the roads. In mid-May and depending on the year, the thaw begins and in mid-October, they will close roads and the lakes get frozen again.

On the other hand, if you are interested in making cheap photography trips, you should bear in mind that June and especially July and August, are high season. The prices of the accommodations soar, but what is worse, you will have to keep tourists away so that they do not appear in the photos.

Finally, you also have to take into account that the numerous glacial lakes that we find in the Canadian Rockies present the most vivid color of which they stand out at the beginning of summer and this will go off as the months run.

We traveled at the end of May – beginning of June and although there were frozen lakes and we missed some places of interest because of having still cut access, it seemed like a good time to travel to the Canadian Rockies.

However, if you want to be able to see everything the Rocky Mountains offer you, at a good price, and with the minimum amount of tourists, I would recommend that you travel in September.

In this section, we will propose a route to take in a 15-day Canadian Rockies photo trip.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT CALGARY AND PREPARATIONS

Our photography tour will begin in Calgary. First of all, we must pick up our rental car and buy what is necessary for our photo trip.

Find Cheap Rental Cars in canada

It will be essential to get a bear spray and other specialized equipment for this destination. Review that you do not lack anything from the list we did here.

If we want to make cheap photography tours, surely we have to camp, so check that you have everything you need.

Once we have everything ready, we will drive to Banff where we will make our first night.

DAY 2: BANFF PEOPLE + TWO JACK LAKE + MINNEWANKA

Our first photo shoot will be at sunrise on Two Jack Lake and Minnewanka Lake.

The third day we will stay in the same place as previous days.

All the information regarding the planning of this day will be found in our Guide to Banff.

DAY 4: WILDLIFE AT BOW VALLEY PARKWAY + MORANT’S CURVE + CASTLE MOUNTAIN

The fourth day of our Canadian Rockies photo trip will be less intense than the previous days. In principle, we will be touring the Bow Valley Parkway to be able to photograph wildlife.

The Bow Valley Parkway is one of the best areas to photograph wildlife. If you want to know the wildlife you can find, do not miss our guide to animals in the Canadian Rockies.

During the morning we will have an hour of canoe rental to take another perspective of the lake.

At mid-morning we will start a hike that will take us to Yoho Lake and from where we will have stunning views of Emerald Lake.

In the afternoon we will have to be back to the lake to be able to photograph the Blue Hour of the Emerald Lake.

If with luck this night there is Northern Lights forecast we will do the photo shoot here.

The sixth night we will stay at Emerald Lake Lodge , which has been serving us throughout the day as an element in the different compositions of the lake.

DAY 7: YOHO NATIONAL PARK

In the morning we will photograph Emerald Lake at dawn.

Then we will spend the day discovering other places in Yoho.

One of the most photogenic places is the Natural Bridge , where we can capture the blue water of the Kicking Horse River.

We can also photograph the Meeting of the Waters or the Takakkaw Falls.

Finally, we will visit the Wapta Falls a little further away.

The seventh night we will stay in the surroundings of Fields. If there were Northern Lights forecast we would go back to Emerald Lake.

You can find all the information regarding the planning of this day in our Guide to Yoho National Park.

DAY 8: LAKE 0 ‘HARA + BOW LAKE

If time permits and the road is open we will visit Lake O’Hara. You can only get to this lake by public bus that must be booked in advance.

If, on the other hand, we can not access the lake this day, we will take advantage of it to make a photo editing and processing workshop.

At mid-afternoon, we will go to the Icefields Parkway to do a sunset session at Bow Lake.

The best time to photograph this lake is in the golden hour of sunset. The perspective that we like the most is that of the right margin, next to the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge , where we will stay.

In addition, we will make a night session in the lake, making coincide with the milky way.

If there were aurora forecast we would go to Peyto Lake.

You will find all the information regarding the planning of this day in our Guide to Yoho National Park and in our Guide to the Icefields Parkway.

DAY 9: PEYTO LAKE + MISTAYA CANYON

This day we will continue touring the Icefields Parkway, discovering places like the Mistaya Canyon.

We will also visit other places of interest such as the Waterfowl Lakes and the Howse Peak.

However, the most important photography session of this day is the sunset in Peyto Lake. We will take advantage, especially of the golden hour.

The ninth night we will stay in the same place as the night before.

All the information regarding the planning of this day will be found in our Guide to the Icefields Parkway.

DAY 10: ICEFIELDS PARKWAY

This day we are going to drive a large part of the Icefields Parkway. An interesting point to photograph is the Big Hill & Big Bend and the Bridal Veil Falls.

We will continue this road passing through the Athabasca Glacier. Previously there was an ice cave that was an essential point for any Canadian Rockies photo tour. However, the cave collapsed and this stop is no longer so interesting.

We will then arrive at the Sunwapta Falls, to make the first session of the day.

In addition, we will visit the Athabasca Falls.

We will spend that night at Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge, for a night session at Sunwapta Falls.

DAY 11: VALLEY OF THE FIVE LAKES + PYRAMID LAKE + PATRICIA LAKE + COTTONWOOD SLOUGH

This day we will finish the Icefields Parkway to reach Jasper, the main town of Jasper National Park.

During the morning and when the sun is quite high, we will make a hike in the Valley of the Five Lakes, to capture the vivid colors of its lakes.

Then we will visit Patricia Lake , which is next to Jasper.

And we will visit Lake Pyramid Lake too, taking advantage of the composition that gives us the wooden bridge that leads to it small island.

DAY 13: BEAUVERT LAKE + MALIGNE ROAD + WAY BACK

The next day our return will begin. In the morning we will visit some lakes that we have yet to see, such as Beauvert Lake, Edith Lake or Annete Lake.

We will travel for the last time Maligne Road to spot, if possible, new wildlife.

And we will take back the Icefields Parkway, very attentive to the animals we can find.

On the thirteenth day, we will stay at the Icefields Parkway. As we will be returning at our pace we will not have reserved accommodation, but we will decide it on the fly.

You can find all the information regarding the planning of this day in our Guide to Jasper National Park.

DAY 14: WILDCARD

Any photo tour itinerary is closely linked to the weather conditions. For that reason, we always like to reserve a free day either to repeat some of the photo shoots that we have not completed successfully or to make a new session that we could not perform before.

The unforeseen arise, so it is better to take them into account from the beginning.

In the case of the Canadian Rockies photo tour we made in 2017, we decided to repeat the sunset of Peyto Lake.

peyto lake canadian rockies photo tour

In the strange case that there was no need to repeat any photo shoot, we will take advantage of the day to do a photographic editing and processing workshop.

We should end this day either at Banff National Park or at Jasper National Park. Accommodation will be decided on site.

DAY 15: RETURN TO CALGARY

This day we will return to Calgary to end our Canadian Rockies photo tour. It has been a very intense photo trip so it is best to arrive at the airport with time and quietly review the photographs we have made through the camera screen.

WHERE TO TAKE THE BEST PHOTOS OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES

In this section, we tell you which are the places to take the best pictures of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

  • Maligne Lake at sunset
  • Natural Bridge in the morning
  • Milky Way in Two Jack Lake
  • Emerald Lake at sunset
  • Beauvert Lake in the morning
  • Peyto Lake at sunset
  • Moraine Lake at sunrise
  • Valley of the Five Lakes at sunrise
  • Minnewanka Lake at sunrise

If you want to have the exact coordinates of the best photos of the Canadian Rockies offline:

  • Download the Mapswithme app on your cell phone.
  • Download and save this KML file in your Dropbox.
  • Open the file through Dropbox from your cell phone. You will get a dialog box where you have to select open with the Mapswithme application (Maps.me)

You can also enjoy all the pictures of the Canadian Rockies in this gallery that we have prepared.

PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR NEEDED AT THE CANADIAN ROCKIES

For those who have not read it, we already have an article where we recommend the best photography equipment for traveling.

In this section, we will only mention the peculiarities that exist when preparing the photography gear to travel to the Canadian Rockies

DSLR / MIRRORLESS CAMERA

Although with a compact camera we can get good landscape pictures, I would not miss the opportunity to shoot with a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, since you can go back home with real masterpieces.

In addition, if we pretend to photograph wildlife, twilight or hopefully aurora borealis, this type of camera is mandatory.

We recommend a wide angle lens to capture the most amazing landscapes and a telephoto lens with a good stabilizer to photograph wildlife. As an optional, we can carry a 50mm lens for panoramic photographs, as well as any medium focal.

A sturdy and stable tripod will be essential for our photo tour. If we can also choose a lightweight travel tripod it will be more comfortable to transport during hikes.

You can also count on a leveling base / L-shaped plate to take panoramic pictures of the landscape.

LENS FILTERS

Weather we want to take photographs capturing the movement of water or for long exposures during the day when the light is very hard, we will need lens filters. A neutral 3-stop filter and a 6-stop filter should be enough. We always use those of Lucroit , with which we collaborate, giving you a 10% discount when buying through this link.

I also recommend that you read our guide to types and uses of lens filters in photography.

lucroit lens filter discount

PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR RENTAL

For us, the biggest mistake we made on our first photo tour to the Canadian Rockies was not having the right equipment. Specifically, a quality telephoto lens to capture the numerous wildlife of Canada.

Really buying a telephoto lens, and in general, other elements of the photography equipment, is expensive, especially when wildlife photo tours are taken only a few times a year. In that case, I advise you to rent instead of going to the Rockies without the appropriate gear.

After our first failed experience photographing wildlife, we always rent telelenses when taking wildlife tour. In case you are in the USA, Lensrental  is the best photography gear rental company. We have been using it since we moved to the USA and is cheap and very convenient since you can drop the gear off at any Fedex office (you can check our Lensrental review here).

Also, if you book your rental gear through this link , you will have a 15% discount.

Is a Canadian Rockies Photo Tour needed?

Perhaps you are wondering, is it worthwhile to hire a photo tour to the Canadian Rockies.

It is not necessary if you have experience in nature and landscape photography, you know all the animals you can see in the Canadian Rockies and where to find them, you know how to photograph the northern lights and you can plan the best photographic locations.

Even so, keep in mind that due to the presence of bears and other predators, in many of the hiking trails you are obliged to do them with more than 4 people. With a guided photo trip this problem would be solved. And of course, your guide will explain everything you have to do to avoid bear attacks.

However, if there is something fascinating about taking a photo tour, it is to be able to share with other nature and photography lovers what is going to be possibly one of the most intense trips of your life.

HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD CANADA PHOTO TOUR

These are some of the tips we want to give you to choose a good Canadian Rockies photo tour:

  • Do not do the tour with an agency but with a photographer or team of photographers in whose name you have access before hiring. If you really want the tour to add value, make sure your guide is a photographer with experience.
  • Linking with the above, there are many unknown photographers with amazing galleries that offer these photo tours at very competitive prices. Never hire a photographer without first being able to check his gallery for that particular destination.
  • For this destination, it is very interesting that the guide also has some idea of wildlife, as well as having previously photographed Northern Lights (and of course that carries a Northern Lights alarm activated throughout the trip).
  • Hire a tour that also includes editing workshops. The weather in the Rockies is unpredictable and you can take advantage of it when weather conditions prevent you from doing outdoor activities.
  • Finally, it would be very interesting if you could read some reviews from others photographers.

As for the price, perhaps now you want to know if there are cheap Canadian Rockies photo tours.

This destination is quite expensive, also if you do it on your own. To be able to compare it, do you know how much we spend camping for 15 days in Canada and not eating in restaurants?

However, it is an experience that deserves it and not only in the photographic plane.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS NECESSARY TO TAKE A CANADIAN PHOTO TOUR

If you ask yourself what physical conditions are necessary for this photo tour, you should know that it is not considered a very demanding trip on a physical level.

Most locations such as lakes, waterfalls, and canyons are close to the road. There are only three activities that require walking for more than an hour. These are the Ink Pots, Lake Agnes and Yoho Lake.

In the case of not wanting to perform any of these activities one of the guides will prepare an alternative plan.

CAPTURE THE ATLAS PHOTO TOURS

As we have told you at the beginning of this article, in the future we would like to return to the Rockies with other travelers. We want to show you the wonders of this place and help you get the most out of it from a photographic point of view.

This and other trips in Capture the Atlas are already underway. If you are interested, leave us your email and we will send you the information.

Would love to know if you are planning on going back with a group

Hi Angela, We would love to, but we probably won’t be holding photo tours here in the near future since processing the permits for the national parks in Canada is pretty difficult if you don’t reside there.

Hello there

Thanks for a very informative article. Planning a trip next year, probably in September.

Would it be possible to send me the co-ordinates of the various locations as i am not able to access the dropbox folder and the map app.

Kind regards

BANFF & LAKE LOUISE

Johnson lake, ten peaks, moraine lake, icefields and more.

GRAND TETON

Emerald glacial waters surrounded by canyons and majestic mountain ranges.

We explore Canada’s first ever National Park on our 6-day Banff Photo Tour and Landscape Adventure. Nestled in the Canadian Rockies, Banff is truly one of Canada’s greatest treasures. In the 1880’s the Transcontinental Railway was stretching her way across Canada and mountain towns were being settled for their natural resources. Banff, however, was settled with the tourist in mind from the very beginning. Tucked away in the bow valley and surrounded by hot springs, glacial lakes, canyons, and the most majestic mountain ranges, it’s difficult to count all the photographic possibilities.

As the railroad brought in the first adventurers, the hot springs at the Cave and Basin were soon opened to the public and people lined up to experience the healing powers of the warm waters. Although the Banff National Park is a popular destination for tourists from around the world, the vast expanse of this national treasure will leave you feeling as if you’re the only one enjoying the views.

Lake Louise, was originally named Lake of the Little Fishes by the First Nations people and later named after Queen Victoria’s fourth daughter. This alpine lake is a breathtaking iconic gem with emerald glacial waters which are situated between glacial peaks. While the crowds may gather to the shore of Lake Louise, nearby Valley of the Ten Peaks and its Moraine Lake is a photographic opportunity not to be missed.

Due to the massive contrast in lighting from the base of the mountains to the peaks, we’ll learn tips on how to properly expose for each situation. Photographing mountains of this magnitude can be an overwhelming assignment, however, we will discuss ways to tell the story of the Rockies through your photographs.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, and utilize and approach your environment. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than in Banff National Park.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Banff & lake louise 6 days, day 1 | banff - bow falls - banff springs - johnson lake.

We meet in the morning at our hotel in Banff National Park where we will spend the week together. After lunch, we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. We will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles, and techniques.

If ever there was an iconic mountain village to be photographed, Banff is it. We will enjoy a scenic walking tour down Banff Ave and enjoy the peaks of Sulphur Mountain from the heart of the town. While walking near the town we will also visit the Cascade Gardens with beautiful views down the main street. From there, we will connect with the Fenland Trail which leads us along a looped trail. This wetland marsh area is ideal for birding, elk, and deer. The trail is lined with aspens, white spruce, and poplar.

We’ll then venture out to Banff’s Bow Falls, which was created by the erosion from glacial activity along the Bow River. One of the most beloved waterfalls in Banff, this is an ideal location to try your hand at long exposures from various points along the falls. We will also spend some time photographing the iconic Banff Springs Hotel — “The Castle in the Rockies” — from afar, and from within.

In the early evening, we will celebrate with our Welcome Dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Banff. Sampling local bison and elk is something that all visitors need to experience.

For sunset, we will step into the wilds with a scenic trail that will lead you around breathtaking Johnson Lake. As we make our way along the lakeside trail, we will enjoy continuous views of Cascade Mountain, the unique forest floor of the Bow Valley, and a few marshy areas which may provide opportunities to view waterfowl and muskrats. (D)

Day 2 | Johnston Canyon - Castle Mountain

We’ll start a little later today, after a long day yesterday. Today, we head to Johnston Canyon, just north of Banff township, where water forces its way and cuts through the limestone to form the canyon walls, waterfalls, tunnels and pools. This is a popular canyon, and a fairly easy climb, with a great payoff. We will bring our tripods, ND and polarizing filters and create beautiful pictures of this rushing water. It gets a little misty at the top, with the thundering force of the water, but it’s worth the effort to capture the falls. As we make our way out of the canyon, we’ll pass through the forest and alongside Johnston creek.

After our hike through the canyon, we’ll drive a little further north to capture Castle Mountain along the Bow river. A mountain was never more appropriately named, and this is a castle that needs exploring. A truly beautiful mountain, made evident by all the wedding photos that are taken here every day.

We will return to Banff, for an early night, as we have an early morning tomorrow. (B)

Day 3 | Vermillion Lakes - Sulphur Mountain - Two Jake Lake

We begin with an early morning sunrise shoot of the Vermillion Lakes west of the town of Banff and at the foot of Mount Norquay. These three lakes provide stunning mountain reflections of Mt. Rundle and beautiful light. We will start at the first lake, and finish our time on the third and furthest lake. This location may provide opportunities to photograph wildlife such as bald eagles and elk. We will return to the hotel for breakfast after the shoot.

After breakfast, we’ll take a mid-morning gondola ride as we ascend the side of beautiful Sulphur Mountain on the Banff Gondola. At the top, we’ll enjoy a 360-degree view of 6 scenic mountain ranges at 7,486 feet above sea level. The view from the top of the range will leave you breathless and exhilarated with unlimited photographic opportunities.

We will have an afternoon rest, so that we are ready for a sunset shoot. After dinner, we will head to Two Jack Lake where sunset comes alive. The lake is a short drive from Banff township, one which will provide breathtaking views of Cascade Mountain. Along with this stretch of road, we may encounter Bighorn Sheep feeding alongside us. As we wait for the sun to set and the waters to calm, we’ll encounter beautiful mountain reflections and interesting foregrounds which will lend to some spectacular photography. (B)

Day 4 | Morant's Curve - Lake Louise - Bow Lake - Peyto Lake

Today, we move camp a little further up the highway, to Lake Louise. A large portion of the most spectacular scenery in the park is in this section.

Before we get to Lake Louise, we will stop for a while at Morant’s Curve. Made famous by Nicholas Morant, a staff photographer for the Canadian Pacific Railway, this stretch of railway along the Bow River is not to be missed. Set below the majestic Mount Temple, this was one of Morant’s favorite locations across Canada. We will capture the light off the slopes of the Rockies and if we’re lucky, we’ll even have the opportunity to photograph a train coming around the bend of Morant’s curve.

Upon our arrival in Lake Louise, we’ll drop our bags at our hotel, and get some much-needed lunch. After our break, we’ll drive a little further north up the Icefields Parkway, where some very beautiful scenery awaits us. Along the drive, there’s a pretty good chance we’ll spot brown bears foraging for food along the highway.

First, up will be Bow Lake, and along with it, Bow Glacier Falls. A large lake, with towering peaks rising from the deep blue waters, make for some great images. There’s a small mountain lodge at the shore of the lake that we can grab some tea or snacks. If the weather is good, and the energy level is high, we can take a 2-hour hike up to Bow Glacier Falls for a backcountry experience that will be truly memorable.

And finally, we will head to Peyto Lake, a short drive from Bow Lake. Peyto Lake is one of Canada’s more recognizable lakes, as it looks like a bear. The 10-minute hike up to the viewpoint is very worth the effort. (B)

Day 5 | Moraine Lake - Lake Louise - Lake Agnes

Although this day sounds like it’s all about lakes – each of them has unique and special qualities. Moraine Lake is one of Banff’s most sought-after scenes. If there is a location not to be missed while exploring the Canadian Rockies, this treasure is it. Glacially fed, Moraine Lake is nestled in the valley of Ten Peaks with an elevation of roughly 6,000 feet. In July, the lake will fill and cast a distinct shade of blue that will be a memory you carry for the rest of your life.

We begin early, as the best shots are at sunrise. By 5:30 am, the crowds will have gathered at the viewpoint. But we will get settled into a location that will provide us with unobstructed views, and without people taking selfies in front of us. Several peaceful walks and casual hikes are nestled around Moraine, and this stunning location deserves several hours of exploration. We’ll take our time at this location and enjoy breakfast here.

We’ll head back down to Lake Louise to photograph this mountain lake in the late morning. Capturing images of the bright red canoes paddled along the glacier-filled lake, or even paddling a canoe on the lake, will be a great experience. After a light lunch at the Chateau Lake Louise, we will begin a hike up to Lake Agnes. The hike is a little more than 2 miles (3.2 km) each way. Approximately 3 hours round trip, plus time to photograph the lake and waterfalls. Once we reach Lake Agnes, there is a European-style Tea House, with hot cocoa and welcome snacks.

In the evening, we’ll settle in for our Farewell Dinner, in one of Lake Louise’s best restaurants. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Lake Louise - Emerald Lake - Natural Falls

On our last morning together, we will take a short trip into British Columbia’s Yoho National Park to photograph Emerald Lake. Since Emerald Lake is just a short drive across the provincial border into British Columbia, the opportunity to photograph her is just too good to pass up. We will have an early morning, so that we arrive at sunrise.

In addition to capturing the beauty of Emerald Lake, on the way back to Lake Louise, we will stop at the Natural Bridge, which is a rock overpass, over the Kicking Horse River. It’s an incredible natural phenomenon, and a wonderful way to spend our last morning together.

We’ll return to our hotel in Lake Louise for breakfast, and conduct our final group discussion, review our past weeks photos, trade contact information, and check out of our hotel , and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Alberta and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

  • Photo Expeditions are led by accomplished photographers and instructors  who are also professional naturalist guides—wildlife experts who understand animal patterns and behaviors, and who know how and where to position you for the best photo opportunities.
  • While all our trips feature small groups, Photo Expeditions travel with even fewer guests , to ensure unimpeded access to the best shots,  plenty of room for your gear aboard our vehicles, and the utmost in flexibility to pursue photo opportunities as they arise.
  • Slower pacing and longer days in the field allow patience to pursue the shots that require it. We often rise early and linger through sunset to capitalize on the best light.
  • Some Photo Expeditions also include  extra weight allowance on select flights to accommodate equipment—a key inclusion in certain destinations, especially when you compare allowances for African safaris.
  • You'll get all the personal attention you need from our outstanding photographer guides, who provide one-on-one coaching tailored to each guest’s interests and ability.

The Leading Photography and Wildlife Tour in The Discovery Islands, BC

Nanook wildlife photo tours experience, a photographic and wildlife experience beyond your dreams..

We are a photographers destination in the very heart of a wildlife paradise just off the west coast of British Columbia at the southern tip of the Great Bear Rainforest. Photographer adventurers fall in love with the area even while on the journey to our lodge. Our tours are by boat which allows us to roam the many kilometres of the Bute Inlet and island shorelines. Less than a 1 minute boat ride from the lodge brings an experience you will never forget.

We have a unique occurrence of one of the largest congregations of bald eagles gathered in one location, putting on aerial displays beyond your wildest dreams. You will have the photo adventure of a lifetime.

Our environment is unique and one of the reasons is because of the powerful Arran rapids which are immediately to the west of our island. The topography creates unusually large volumes of water flowing into and out of the Bute Inlet with 14 foot tides, and exhilarating fast currents that result in ocean rapids that have to be seen to be believed. Not only are we the premiere eagle destination of the west coast of Canada, we have many additional natural wonders that complete your wildlife experience.

With miles of shoreline  to explore you will be immersed in an experience of wildlife photography beyond your dreams of eagles, whales, bears, dolphins, birds and majestic landscapes as well as opportunities to fish for all five species of salmon - Chinook, Coho, Chum (Keta), Pink and Sockeye

Lenses to bring include 100-500, 150-600, 200-500.

The varied focal length ranges of these zoom lenses will make your image making more enjoyable.

Minimum 500mm or 600mm lens, 800mm with tele-converter and/or a crop sensor body.

Digital cards, back up hard drive and laptop - internet at the lodge.  Clothing and accessories: The temperatures can be very cold while photographing from the blinds and it is not uncommon to be faced with wind factors making it even colder. It is very important to be properly prepared with the right clothing as follows. Warm under layers, merino wool is excellent, avoid cotton.

A second layer of fleece or wool, top and bottoms. Two layers of socks, merino wool and -30C socks.

An outer layer of down filled parka and pants. Temperatures can be from 1C to -25C . There will be a  propane heater in your blind,  should you get cold.

A balaclava is highly recommended to keep your face from the cold and wind.

Cold temperature gloves and or a mitten glove combo. Merino wool thin gloves.

Hand and toe warmers. These are the small packets that fit in pockets in the heat 3 gloves and in the end of your boots for toe warmth. Merino wool thin gloves and another pair of gloves or mittens to warm up your hands.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

An amazing experience to photograph lynx  in the wild. An excellent time and experience, thank you! D. Mills.

This was not my first workshop with Dave. All workshops have been outstanding exceeding my expectations! Great instruction, great subjects, and entertaining. What more could a photographer ask for? S. Barger.

You were right. It was worth enduring the cold weather  of Canada to photograph coyotes, wolves and bald eagles. Thanks again for the excellent time on the workshop.

Wow, what a cool adventure and photo experience this was! I highly recommend David and Jennifer Hemmings as they were perfect hosts and took us into the wilderness of BC where we saw and photographed the Lynx.

NOTE: this itinerary will change for the winter muskox trip that I am hoping will run this March-April, however, due to current snow conditions in the Arctic, this trip will NOT be confirmed until late February 2024. There is no fall trip this year.

An 8-day photo adventure into a remote wilderness camp on the barrenland tundra in Nunavik (north of Quebec) in search of muskox and other tundra wildlife with local and Inuit guides and crew. Muskox never did naturally colonize the Quebec-Labrador peninsula after the last glaciation, so in the 1970s, wild, free-roaming muskox from the Canadian Arctic islands were introduced into two areas of Nunavik. The population has done extremely well and has colonized much of the northern tundra. The Wolf Lake Camp that we will be staying at is home to two different herds of muskox in close vicinity to the camp, with another few herds accessible by boat. The area also boasts arctic wolves, rock and willow ptarmigan, red fox, black bears, snowy owls, and porcupines. The tour is timed to coincide with fall colours, which burst with reds and oranges early in September, making for spectacular wildlife and landscape photography. The area is also rich in Inuit archaeological sites, including tent rings and inukshuks.

This adventure is specifically designed to provide you with the best possible opportunities for watching and photographing these elusive and beautiful bovines while learning about their ecology. It is also an opportunity to explore the barrenland tundra wilderness of the Ungava Peninsula, a vast, rugged area that very few people get to experience.

Participants should arrive in good physical and mental shape prepared for a flexible itinerary that may require quite a bit of physical activity, including hiking on uneven and wet terrain. Expect to hike anywhere from 2-15 kilometres a day with gear.

The Wolf Lake Camp is a very rustic former hunting camp that is currently being repurposed as a wildlife viewing camp. Participants will sleep two to a cabin on bunks, with generator power available in the main dining hall/building for charging batteries and laptops. There is no running water at Wolf Lake Camp, so expect to be using outhouses for bathroom breaks.

Wolf Lake Camp is accessed via a 2.5-hour flight from Montreal, Quebec to Kuujjuaq, Nunavik on Canadian North and then via a 30-minute float plane trip from Kuujjuaq to Wolf Lake.

Weather conditions may be variable and participants must be prepared for everything from hot and dry summer-like weather (thankfully by September there will be few bugs) to cold and wet early arctic fall conditions. However, while the conditions may be difficult at times, the rewards are worth it, as you will become part of a small, exclusive group of people that have explored the wonders of Nunavik!

Maximum five participants per tour (plus leader).

All Canadian Wildlife Photography Tours are non-smoking tours. Participants will be required to sign a Waiver and a Terms and Conditions Cancellation Policy. Participants will be responsible for all additional costs related to weather, flight and/or logistical delays.

Please note that a $1500 non-refundable deposit via cheque or email bank transfer is required to reserve your spot on a Muskox Photography Tour. The balance owing, including gst, is due 90 days prior to your trip departure and is also non-refundable (see the Cancellation Policy for more details). We highly recommend all workshop and tour participants purchase independent trip cancellation insurance to protect against unforeseen circumstances.

The expansive country of Canada is a destination to be reckoned with. Filled with a diversity of landscapes and welcoming people, Canada has pockets of beauty and charm across the nation complete with exciting food scenes, outdoor escapes, and breathtaking natural wonders. The birthplace of artists like Celine Dion, Drake, and Ryan Gosling is also a mecca for some seriously cool cultural hubs—making it the perfect place to witness the country’s next generation of exciting creatives.

Looking to head north and explore the Maple Leaf Nation? Read ahead for some of the best places to visit in Canada from coast to coast.

Give Into Nature at Banff National Park

Marvel at the 2,564 square miles of wilderness with a visit to Banff National Park . A favorite Rocky Mountain escape in both summer and winter, this natural wonderland is filled with picturesque lakes, tree-covered peaks, and towering glaciers. In warmer months, come for the 1,000 miles of hiking trails, take gondolas up to the mountain summits for spectacular views, or hop in a canoe for a scenic excursion through the lakes. In snowy seasons, hit the world-class ski resorts or take to the trails in snow shoes.

Stay Here: Fairmont Banff Springs is a historic hotel in the region and a must-visit when staying in the park. The castle-like architecture is truly awe-inspiring, as is the impressive spa.

Hit the Slopes at Whistler

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Person Snow Helmet Leisure Activities Skiing and Sport

Skiers and snowboarders from around the globe flock to the 8,000-acre property of Whistler Blackcomb Resort . The stunning mountainous retreat in British Columbia is a favorite thanks to its dynamic runs, ranging from beginner-friendly to some of the steepest in North America. (Word to the wise: don’t take Couloir Extreme unless you are practically a pro.) Winter sports fans will be happy to learn that they can easily access the mountain with an Epic Pass or daily lift ticket.

Outside of the slopes, visitors can enjoy a vibrant, yet laid-back après-ski culture (think more post-slope brews over Aspen champagne showers). Favorites at the base of the mountain include The GLC or Après Après. If you're not skiing or want a break from winter sports, enjoy a spa day or explore the charming town itself.

Stay Here: Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler is the perfect option for visitors who want a luxe mountain experience. The resort offers both suites and townhouses if you want to bring the whole family or a group of friends. Just a short five-minute walk or shuttle to the slopes from a ski concierge, it’s easy to enjoy the hotel and the mountain.

Explore the Harbors of Prince Edward Island

Canada’s smallest province is full of charm. Perhaps most famous as the setting of the book series Anne of Green Gables , Prince Edward Island is full of stretches of beaches, lighthouses, strawberry fields, and quaint towns. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy the newly opened Island Walk, which offers a 435-mile trail around the province to explore. Make sure to stop at the preserved village of Charlottetown, see the red sand beaches, and enjoy the local fare including incredibly fresh mussels and oysters at Blue Mussel Cafe . For accommodations, choose between elegant country inns and rustic bed and breakfasts around the island.

Taste the Cuisine of Montreal

Foodies and Francophiles should make a beeline for Montreal, the cultural metropolis of Québec. The French influence on the local architecture, language, and cuisine is strong, but expect more Canadian-friendly charm than Parisian directness. Plan ahead to secure reservations at Vin Mon Lapin for the most creative, high-end (but surprisingly low-key) dining in the province with an incredible natural wine selection. You can also book a table or bar seat at L’Express for a classic brasserie experience. (Pro tip: don’t end your meal without ordering the incredible île flottante for dessert.) Vin Papillon is another favorite for an elevated yet casual meal with plenty of impressive wines by the glass, while Le Passé Composé takes brunch to the next level. Of course, your culinary adventure in Montreal is not complete without a visit to St.-Viateur for their iconic bagels or La Banquise for a late-night snack of poutine.

For scenic moments, explore the European buildings in Vieux-Port, walk along the Lachine Canal, or see the entire city from Kondiaronk Belvedere. For shopping, head to Mile End’s vintage haven Marché Floh or make an appointment at SSENSE for a personal shopping experience through the latest designer collections.

Stay Here: Hôtel William Gray is a modern escape within the Vieux-Port neighborhood. Complete with well-appointed rooms, a rooftop bar with an excellent view, and a luxe spa, it’s a perfect location to return to after your late-night excursions. A favorite local speakeasy The Coldroom can even be found right across the street.

Experience the Majesty of Niagara Falls

Image may contain Outdoors Nature Scenery Water and Waterfall

Niagara Falls is an incredibly popular tourist destination for a reason. The awe-inspiring waterfalls are a sight that can’t be missed. After taking a boat tour to experience the landmark, consider heading a little north to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a calmer, more elevated experience away from the flashiness of Niagara Falls. The 19th-century town is home to an acclaimed theater festival as well as wineries, nearby hiking, and spas.

Embrace City Living in Toronto

Image may contain City Architecture Building Cityscape Urban Nature Outdoors and Scenery

As the biggest and most diverse city in the country, you can find practically anything within Toronto’s varied neighborhoods. From incredible Michelin star winners like Alo Restaurant to Jamaican-Asian favorite Patois, the food scene alone makes the city worth a visit. Tourists can check out the city views from CN Tower or explore the grounds of the Allan Gardens Conservatory. For a cultural outing, head to The Royal Ontario Museum or check out one of the city’s many festivals.

Stay Here: The Drake Hotel is not only known for its modern, maximalist design, but it also serves as a hub for art and events. You can find DJs performing on the rooftop during warmer months and live bands performing at the Drake Underground all year round.

Go Wine Tasting in Kelowna

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Scenery Countryside Rural Farm Landscape Sky and Vineyard

If strolling in vineyards alongside a lake is your cup of tea, then make a trip to Kelowna in British Columbia. The region alongside Okanagan Lake is home to over 40 wineries producing wines ranging from Zinfandel to Pinot Noir. Mission Hill Family Estates is a popular spot to visit, as is Quail’s Gate Winery, but custom wine tour operators can take you to a number of the area’s more unique producers. For the outdoorsy visitor, plenty of hiking and biking trails are available throughout the landscape.

Enjoy the Laid-Back Ambiance of Vancouver

Image may contain Landscape Nature Outdoors Architecture Building Cityscape Urban City Scenery and Mountain

Head to the west coast of Canada to visit the beautiful waterfront city of Vancouver . The country’s third most populous city has a beautiful balance between indoors and out. The walkable metropolis has great restaurants, a thriving LGBTQ+ scene, and thrilling nightlife, as well as forest escapes just at the borders of the city. The enormous Stanley Park is a must-see during the warmer months and if you’re not afraid of heights, arrange a visit to Capilano Suspension State Park to walk the 450-foot-long bridge above a canopy of trees.

Stay Here: Fairmont Pacific Rim is a contemporary retreat along the waterfront with spectacular views. The restaurant and cocktail bar Botanist is a local favorite, while guests can also enjoy an on-site Taschen library and rooftop pool.
