Why Business Travel Still Matters in a Zoom World

Nonstop flights generally make traveling more pleasant—but can they lead to innovation, too, especially in the global context? Research suggests that they can, with important takeaways for managers reinstating business travel in a world emerging from the pandemic.

In a recent study , Harvard Business School Associate Professor Prithwiraj Choudhury examined how, when, and whether nonstop flights could spark an increase in new ideas. In a broad examination of flight and patent data, Choudhury and co-authors found that a 10 percent increase in nonstop flights between two locations led to a 1.4 percent increase in new patents between firms in those places.

“Even in a hybrid world, even in a world of work-from-anywhere, we still need to occasionally meet colleagues in person for social purposes.”

Choudhury and colleagues teased out an additional wrinkle. Meeting face-to-face—made easier with nonstop flights—matters most when collaborators are in different time zones or overcoming cultural distance.

“It seems that, if the two locations are in the same time zone and are culturally similar, then Zoom is good enough. It’s fine to meet colleagues on Zoom and have productive conversations with them. But, if you’re working with a colleague who lives in a faraway time zone or is culturally different from you, you have to get on a flight and meet that person in person. That’s a big takeaway,” Choudhury says.

In a business world emerging from Zoom boxes, that’s an important wrinkle to consider. “Business travel is still required,” says Choudhury, who wrote the study with Dany Bahar, an associate professor at Brown University; Do Yoon Kim, an assistant professor at Boston College; and Wesley Koo, an assistant professor at INSEAD. “Even in a hybrid world, even in a world of work-from-anywhere, we still need to occasionally meet colleagues in person for social purposes.”

Marrying flight and patent data

Choudhury and colleagues examined flights from every airport worldwide—5,015 in all—between 2005 and 2015. Then, they matched those flights to global patent data filed by firms whenever they knew the address of each patent’s inventor and used cutting-edge empirical methods to determine causality.

In addition to the 1.4 percent uptick in patents, the authors found that new applications cited other patents 3.4 percent more often—evidence of innovation as measured by the US Patent and Trademark Office—when nonstop flights increase by 10 percent. The firms that benefitted most from nonstop flights tended to be bigger innovators overall, with more inventor stock and higher R&D spending. Many of these companies were also located within 50 miles of innovation hubs or in countries that were known as tech leaders.

The researchers also found that the effect of nonstop flights on innovation outcomes was stronger for routes with shorter north-south distances, which cross over less longitudinal distance.

Some business travel makes more of a difference

Choudhury believes these findings offer meaningful insight for policymakers, particularly in innovation hubs, as they contemplate adding nonstop flights to their airports. It’s also useful for corporate leaders evaluating the importance of business travel.

Choudhury’s work is especially prescient in a post-pandemic world. His broader scholarship focuses on the geography of work, particularly how location affects productivity and innovation. The ongoing rise of remote work, propelled by COVID-19, calls into question the importance of face-to-face interaction. These days, he’s often asked whether in-person business trips are worth it.

“We’re showing that business travel matters for innovation, but it only matters if two firms’ locations are either culturally or temporally far away from each other.”

The study offers him an answer: Yes, with an important caveat.

“We’re showing that business travel matters for innovation, but it only matters if two firms’ locations are either culturally or temporally far away from each other,” he says—that is, if the two firms possess different cultural norms or don’t have overlapping business hours, defined as 1.5 hours or less.

For instance, colleagues who speak different languages and possess unique cultural norms around meeting styles would benefit from in-person meetings, whereas people who speak the same language and operate meetings similarly won’t realize the same benefit.

Choudhury hopes business leaders consider the research when refining post-pandemic work policies. Because of the vast sample size of flights used in this paper, he believes the findings are generalizable for all business leaders.

The power of Zoom

Choudhury was surprised that direct flights weren’t particularly helpful when people were in the same time zone, however.

“It just shows you the power of Zoom and similar communication technologies. The advent of these technologies has really shrunk distance,” he says.

Ultimately, Choudhury hopes that leaders realize that nonstop flights could overcome temporal barriers and help to spread knowledge—either through colleagues working in person or virtually, but on the same schedule—especially as work-from-home policies increase and the global workforce scatters.

“If you’re living in San Francisco, and your colleague is living in Vancouver, and you both speak excellent English, and you both understand exactly the same cultural norms, Zoom works great. If you’re meeting a colleague who lives in Beijing or South Korea, and you’re both culturally and temporally distant, those face-to-face meetings still have value,” Choudhury says.

While some tickets are still available on the official T20 website and more are occasionally released, original India vs. Pakistan tickets have sold out and are no longer available. A new wave of public tickets will be made available this week, but this will not include more tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game. 

Tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game are available on resale vendor websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . Due to the substantial demand, these are higher-priced than the original standard ticket prices.

How much are India vs. Pakistan tickets?

While it's unclear exactly how much the original standard India vs. Pakistan tickets went for in the ballot, the cheapest tickets for other matches at USA venues start at $35 (although India vs. Pakistan was most likely more). The only currently available India vs. Pakistan resale tickets on StubHub are $1,258 each. Vivid Seats listings are similarly priced, starting at $1,687.

Updated on 06/29/2023: Is Vantage Deluxe Travel business close now? I have a trip booked since 2019. My trip in June 2023 was canceled again. This time I am asking my refund. I tried to call them and get message saying that the office is close.

Original Review: Hello to All the Vantage Deluxe World travelers, I am in the same boat as everyone is complaining. Vantage Deluxe World Travel deceptive business practices have caused us a nightmare. Why isn’t there any class action lawsuit on this company? I have a trip booked since 2019; I still haven’t yet been able to go on my trip. Vantage has canceled my trip again for the fourth times. Last year, my Passage to Eastern Europe trip was canceled while I was checking-in at the airport. I have the boarding pass the night before the trip should not be any problem. But, to know the airline reject you to board the plane is a nightmare. I take the time go to airport and return home with anger. So, this trip was postponed to June 26, 2023 and again, Vantage cancels this trip due to operational reasons with no detail information. We should put Vantage Deluxe out of business.

I purchase "Luxury On The Nile: Ancient Egyptian Wonders: on January 26th, 2023 from VANTAGE DELUXE WORLD TRAVEL (big mistake) Trip was to depart May 8th and return May 28th, 2023. Price included travel insurance with Allianz Global Assurance and airfare. I paid with a direct deposit (stupid). All seemed normal even received call asking for passport info sometime in March. Was told at that time I would receive travel packet with details and connections 15 days before departure. Never came so I went on line to discover the hack to their system (couldn't happen to a nicer organization).

Could not contact them until they sent alternative email where I asked what was going on with my trip to Cairo which was to leave now, in about 10 days. Received blast email presumably to all their "good customers". It stated news of the hack but all is good (paraphrasing) except for 6 trips 4 of which were river trips in the Netherlands(?) with an equipment problem and 2 to Cairo of which one was mine. No real explanation as to why it was canceled. All were canceled but they would be getting in touch with me in a day or two...Still waiting! 1 and 1/2 months!!!

The other shoe then landed, I received a notice from Allianz Global Assurance on the 23rd of May that my insurance was canceled. The notice showed a purchase date of Jan 26th 2023...cancelation date Jan 30th 2023. Better than 100 days late and after trip was to depart. Called Allianz was told they only insure the trip once it is started and Vantage insured any cancelations before departure. I asked Allianz for return of premium paid to them they said they returned premium to...you guessed it..Vantage Travel....same for airline, ticket refund went to Vantage....So the company canceling the trip was also the company issuing the trip insurance...Nice racket! When you call as I have, at least 15 times, I get this perky little voice that says they are sooo busy taking care of their good customers but they will return my call with in 24 hours (still waitingx10)!!!!

I did get through once. the same little perky voice asked how she could help, after giving my booking number and customer number she again asked how she could help. I asked her if she had looked up the booking number and knows where it was to go? In a little less of a perky voice, she said "Cairo" to which I replied "Then you know why I called". She then informed me in a negative perky little voice that I have a bad attitude and she might hang up on me. To that I replied "Given how classy this company is, I would expect nothing less" and then.... CLICK!!!! She hung up on me! I never raised my voice, never cursed, and said nothing personal....She did make my point however!!!

I think They have blocked my number because I can not get through except that perky little voice telling me after about a 8 minute wait they would call me back within 24 hours! Don't know how They even get a 3 star rating, from what I've seen, most would give VANTAGE DELUXE WORLD TRAVEL a zero rating. There are no words in the English language that can adequately describe this organization. They are despicable low lifes. There are no curse words vile enough!

I probably lost my money but it is on me. I let a trip of life time cloud my judgement and good sense. I should have never trusted them and as a person of reasonable honesty I actually gave it little thought. Sadly, I have lost a little innocence and this will stay with me a long time. Bottom line I was a fool.... but I have learned and I can live with myself. Not sure how anyone at Vantage can say that....Just thought...They should change their name to ADVANTAGE TRAVEL as that is what they will do...take Advantage of you....DON'T LET THEM!!!!

My wife and I have taken 6 previous tours/cruises with Vantage, two river cruises, one chartered yacht cruise and three land tours by bus. All were fine. But since the COVID pandemic, Vantage has turned into a dysfunctional money pit where your money goes in and no travel comes out, where you think you are covered by insurance, only to find out that the actual travel insurance only covers the trip once it's started...anything that happens before that remains the responsibility of Vantage, so if you have to cancel your trip, Vantage decides where or not to refund your money. And it seems their response is to stall and ignore you, seemingly forever.

Recently Vantage has been cancelling trips with almost no notice whatsoever. We have friends who were in the airport ready to leave for a Vantage cruise, only to receive a phone call that the cruise had been cancelled. You can read about it in the Palm Beach, FL newspaper. Other Vantage unfortunates have started a Facebook page (search for "Vantage Complaints") to record their trip cancellations and postponements and the ridiculous and demeaning behavior of Vantage's so-called "customer service," if you can reach them at all by phone or email.

Vantage has had our money since October 2019 and has done nothing but postpone our trip further and further into the future. We opted to choose a different cruise when Vantage postponed our trip to a date where we had another cruise already booked with a different operator. Now the ship which was supposed to carry us on that delayed trip is sailing with its sister ship to Caen, France, where we believe the owners (not Vantage) will impound the ships, possibly because Vantage is not making its payments on time for use of those vessels. It is quite likely that no one with a future tour or cruise with Vantage will ever get to travel, as every day sees more cancellations without good reasons.

I purchased through Vantage, Celtic Voyage: Reykjavik to Dublin on 11/8/2022. Pre-trip Reykjavik and post-trip Dublin. I was supposed to leave for the airport on 5/16/2023 for a 9:00PM flight. I called Vantage 2xs on 5/15 because they were showing my post-trip was in Portugal and also to confirm this trip was a ”GO”. My bags were packed and ready to go for my trip. On 5/15 at 6:34PM, I received a voice mail from Vantage indicating my trip was canceled. I returned the call to Vantage with no answer. I subsequently call British Airways and was informed there was an itinerary change so I would not be allowed on this flight and I would have to call the travel agent, Vantage, to receive a refund for this flight.

I sent Vantage an email asking why this trip was canceled and I wanted a full refund for this canceled trip. On 5/16 at 4:38, I received a return phone call from Vantage indicating there was a vendor issue and I would be receiving a full refund for this trip. I also requested a follow up email to our phone conversation. I am now in the process of trying to get a refund and have just become aware of all the nightmare stories that are all similar to mine. Please, please DO NOT book a trip with Vantage Deluxe World Travel. It will only cause you nightmares, heartache and hassles. I would have given them 0 stars if possible.

Purchased a $10,000+ trip from Vantage, including air, months ago. Called Vantage last week to confirm reservation which they did. Received Travel documents, including flight, from Vantage. Tried to obtain boarding pass from Delta, was told the trip had not been paid for. Tried to call Vantage and no one answers. Tried after hours emergency line which said they would return call in 3 hours and have not heard a thing for 11 hours. Delta said don't come airport. Vantage didn't even have the courtesy to cancel the flight. Vantage just sends out all these alerts trying to upsell seemingly nonexistent trip and their website is full of hype trying to sell new trips to victims like me.

When I researched using them, I didn't think to check reviews. But initially I read cost as $90/month. After speaking with somebody at company, they stated since I'm processing weekly it would be $28/week. I added on work comp through a Paychex affiliate. And then Paychex bumped up my invoice to $31 weekly. Even though the payments are to another company, since Paychex processes it, there is additional weekly charge. I was then contacted by sales rep to add 401k. And that would be another $50/month, and of course an additional weekly charge.

Mind you, this is all automated processing with a push of button software. That they're charging monthly/weekly fees for. You still have to go in to a hard to navigate app and process everything yourself. And then of course look at all the reports and double check them. Because they do the percents wrong with paying the taxes. The first quarter, Paychex didn't even pay anything to state. Then when I received letter from secretary's office, after inquiring about my quarterly filing. Paychex finally started doing the state payments. I was supposed to be paying 2.7% to the state, but Paychex was only taking out 1.8%.

So now I owe the state, plus penalty. Every week I had to make a call to Paychex for some kind of mistake. And it would take multiple calls through a few weeks time to correct their mistakes. I was owed $181 credit from Paychex. But they kept processing invoice payments out my account for 5 weeks until finally I went to another payroll company. I would have to call Paychex after every payroll process letting them know, hey you charged me again this week, when I'm supposed to have a credit. They stated they see a credit is due, but hasn't been approved yet. It takes more than a month for approval to correct your mistake?

Every time you call, you get someone with bad attitude. Because they're so inundated with others who've they made mistakes with. Nobody ever accepts any responsibility. And they always say same thing: "I don't know why they did that." Like they're talking about another company. It's Your company and Your problem. So how are you going to fix? I called to cancel services. They hung up and didn't even put my cancel request through. I called again and they have no answer to the over $150 I am owed. Stating they don't know if I'll get refunded, since I'm no longer using Paychex. They can't credit any invoices. How about just putting the money back in the account you so easily withdrew from?

They also have not returned the tax money they took out of check payments since start of new quarter. And they haven't sent that money to the Feds. I don't know how this company is in existence without any fraud charges. They borderline do business that should have people jailed. I have to call Attorney General's office Monday to get my money back. And next I'm filing report with Better Business Bureau. And seeing if there's some kind of arbitration court.

I enjoyed two river cruises with Vantage. I had booked a third trip in April of 2022, but due to after effects of Covid had to cancel. Allianz approved my medical documentation and advised me that Vantage would be responsible for my refund ($5000 plus). Countless calls, e-mails, report to BBB, and more have gone nowhere. I suggest not booking Vantage. The Boston Globe newspaper recently reported that the owner of Vantage, Henry Lewis, Is suing his investment advisor/colleague/friend for 14 or 15M. Obviously Vantage is in trouble. I need my refund, and hope it becomes reality, but I’m very worried.

We were scheduled for a trip with Antarctica in Jan 2023 with extension to Easter Island. In November, Vantage cancelled the extension but we said we would go without that. In early Jan 2023, my husband had a stroke which obviously prevented us from going. I immediately filed with Allianz (Vantage insurance company) who cleared our claim in 3 days. We were told Vantage had to cut the check (Why is that?). So our $40,000 is still sitting with Vantage and no hope in sight.

Every time I contact Vantage, it is "We are so busy with so many claims and working as hard as we can". Last person told me there were hundreds and hundreds of claims ahead of ours. This is TOTALLY irresponsible. They still send me glossy brochures every day along with emails for vacations which really set me off. Spend some of the advertising money on processing refunds!!! We had been very pleased with past 6-7 trips but in the past few years, the company has really gone down the tubes. I will never travel with them nor recommend them to anyone.

Traveling with Vantage would be a terrible decision. Their travel practices are deceptive and their customer service is non existent. A trip initially booked in October, 2021 was rescheduled twice in 2022 on very short notice. The second time they canceled the trip they sent a deceptive communications saying that the trip's departure was delayed but not saying that they had instead rebooked us on a different cruise to a totally different area of the world. Only after requesting a full refund were we offered a reservation departing on the April 14, 2023 cruise with our desired itinerary. Then on March 29, 2023, Vantage canceled our reservation saying due to an inventory problem there was no cabin available for us.

Although their Tour Participation Agreement states that if they cancel a cruise a full refund of all funds paid to them would be promptly made, they have never offered a full refund but always tried to retain the funds and substitute another cruise. Contacting Vantage is time consuming and rarely productive. Wait times for their customer service numbers can be literally hours. Customers are expected to frequent their customer website to stay up to date on the status of their trips rather than receive proactive communications of changes from Vantage. Their customer website has frequent technical glitches, Chat has limited functions and after waiting to Chat you are directed to call Customer 888 number and wait endlessly. All communications with Vantage staff start from the premise that they are in the right and you are the problem.

Last June 2022 we purchased a cruise from Vantage Travel a Boston based cruise company. This was our first experience with this company and it will be our last. I just wanted to give you a heads up as to their unscrupulous practices. In short, they engage in "Bait and Switch" sales tactics. Last June we purchased a cruise from Buenos Aires to Manaus, Brazil on the Ocean Explorer with a post cruise extension of 4 days deep into the Amazon Rainforest. All looked good until December when out of nowhere, they changed the itinerary from Manaus to Belem, Brazil. That meant no Amazon Rainforest. They claimed the change was due to a "Dock collapse" in Manaus. When I checked into cancelling the trip I found we were out of luck getting our money back. We decided to go ahead with the trip.

We just returned from a very unsatisfactory cruise. The ship we were on, "The Ocean Explorer", is a small expedition ship with only 160 passengers, capacity, we were able to get to know a number of fellow passengers. There were 120 really pissed off folks. They were all told a number of stories why we were unable to end the cruise in Manaus. The stories ranged from: terrorist risks, bad covid outbreak, abductions, collapsed dock. All obviously lies! Many of the folks were previous Vantage customers who had good experiences with Vantage and could not understand what happened to the company. It appears they are engaged in a "Ponzi scheme", take orders and cash for next year's cruises to pay for this years expenses. If you challenge them for a refund on unfulfilled extensions they quote the terms of the contract, which says, "they are not responsible for any loss due to itinerary changes". This company is preying on seniors.

I think All World Travel in ABQ. She has been terrific in following through on travel plans and making suggestions for future trips. I was lucky to have met Deborah when I was invited to join friends on an African Safari. I recently had the misfortune of using BusinessTravel365 for my travel needs and I have to say, it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Their service is absolutely awful and I would strongly advise anyone against going anywhere near them. First of all, the agency was completely unresponsive to my requests. I had to constantly follow up with them for information and they seemed disinterested in helping me. This should have been a red flag for me, but unfortunately I trusted them to handle my travel arrangements. To make matters worse, they actually charged my card for services that were never provided. I reached out to them multiple times to try and rectify this issue, but they never bothered to respond or even attempt to refund me. This level of customer service is completely unacceptable and it is clear that BusinessTravel365 does not prioritize their clients' satisfaction. I cannot stress enough how terrible my experience was with this agency. If you value your time, money, and overall sanity, please stay far away from BusinessTravel365. There are plenty of reputable travel agencies out there that will actually take care of their clients and provide excellent service. Don't make the same mistake I did and avoid BusinessTravel365 at all costs. Trust me, you do not want to miss your flight because of their incompetence.

Please ignore the review I posted earlier. I thought I'd gotten a significant discount, showed up at the airport to find out that they'd neglected to book the right date with the carrier. I spent two anxious hours waiting for them to finally get me another flight that night. Then it took more than a week for them to confirm a return flight for me on the date I wanted. In addition, I was charged an extra $350 for all of this repeat booking, was told that I'd get the money back as soon as everything was taken care of, i've been home a month and no sign of the refund. Yes, I got a good price, but not enough to justify all of the aggravation it cost me.

Excellent service and pricing

We have used Business Travel 365 several times and the service and pricing Erik gives us is always excellent. Last week British Air cancelled our and my wife's brother's family flights to Prague for our son's wedding. Erik was a tireless warrior and spent the better part of 4 days and many hours finding all of us new business class flights with Lufthansa. I cannot say enough about the wonderful and compassionate service Erik provided us. Thank you so much Erik!

Crazy prices became affordable!

We were looking for flights and getting 10k to 14k prices, anything cheaper was not feasible (30 hours travel time etc). I contacted a few companies and Yanis rang me and over the course of a few days (and a weekend even out of the office) he managed to get us better flights for half the price. It took a bit of back and forth and with our delays we lost a few options (our fault) but Yanis was able to find us replacements as quick as he could. Highly recommended!

Excellent experience

Excellent experience. I admit I was a little skeptical about using a flight discount service as I never had used one before - Would it be totally legit? Would I get good business class seats on convenient flights? Would there be no hitches? The answer to all is absolutely yes. Booking was easy, I got great seats on direct flights to and from London, and I saved thousands of dollars on the fare. No hiccups whatsoever. Will definitely use for international travel from now on. Highly recommend.

Business Travel Could Stage a Full Pandemic Recovery in 2024

Corporate travel remains below 2019 levels, but airlines and hotels see a steady recovery.

Business travel has lagged leisure throughout the pandemic recovery as corporate road warriors – and their finance chiefs – grew content with video calls and sporadic trips into offices. 

There are signs, however, that U.S. business travelers are making their way back, albeit at a very measured pace. West Coast technology companies — long the laggards in business travel  — are also returning. 

Business travel will regain 95% of its 2019 level in 2024, up from 89% last year, the U.S. Travel Association forecast in January. However, if the U.S. economy achieves a so-called “soft landing,” with inflation slowing and interest rates easing, large tech and financial services companies may send more people out on the road.

Fortune 500 Green Shoots  

Speaking Tuesday at an investor conference, Alaska and Delta Air Lines executives specifically cited growing travel demand by Fortune 500 member companies. The airline industry has relied heavily on leisure traffic for the past four years. Today, global business travelers are becoming a nice bonus.

“What’s really been helpful is the return of business and corporate traffic for us in our West Coast hubs,” Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said at the J.P. Morgan Industrials Conference. “We kept saying on every analyst call there’s upside for us, there’s dry powder, as it starts coming back. And that’s what we’re seeing. We’re seeing more business traffic come back.”

Travel volume by Amazon has surpassed its 2019 level, and Microsoft spending is twice the level of 2023, Minicucci said. Seattle-based Alaska has travel programs with both Washington-based tech companies.

At the same investor event, Delta also called out growth among business, and said it sees robust demand into the second quarter and summer. Delta President Glen Hauenstein cited “continued strength in premium products and growing demand for corporate travel, and the more traditional corporate travel, the Fortune 500 companies,” underlying the carrier’s financial optimism.

In January, Hauenstein had said that “nearly 95%” of those queried in Delta’s most recent corporate survey said they expected to travel as much or more in the first quarter as in the fourth quarter, “a double-digit improvement in travel intentions from our last survey.”

AmEx GBT Is Bullish

American Express Global Business Travel has detected a travel uptick among large global multinationals. 

“We’ve also seen a pickup, particularly in the tech sector and professional services and I think we will see a narrowing of the gap, if you like, between SME (small-to-medium-sized enterprise) and global multinational as we go through 2024,” CEO Paul Abbott said on the company’s March 5 earnings call.

AmEx GBT is forecasting sales to increase by as much as 9% this year. The company acquired Egencia, the corporate travel management platform, from Expedia Group in 2021.

Amex GBT also sees airfare and hotels’ average daily rate moderating in 2024, Abbott said. “We expect revenue outperformance as business travel stabilizes at or above GDP growth and Amex GBT continues to win and gain share,” he said.

Not Everything’s Rosy

This good news for travel companies comes with plenty of caveats. 

Video conferencing technology is well-established as suitable for many meetings and training events. 

Corporate travel managers are contending with higher prices across the travel ecosystem as airlines, hotels and rental car chains all enjoy pricing power. Hotels’ average daily rate (ADR) is at a record, according to data compiled by CoStar Group. Airline fares have declined from 2022 but still remain high, and highly volatile.

The work from home ethos is here to stay for many in the corporate world, and reduced time in an office tends to naturally shrink the amount of business travel professionals do. 

Corporate sustainability goals also factor into how much travel companies are inclined to book. A third of U.S. companies and 40% of those in Europe said they must trim travel per employee by more than 20% by 2030 to meet their sustainability targets, according to the 2023 Deloitte Corporate Travel Survey. 

Yet for all the headwinds facing travel companies, a vigorous U.S. economy with low unemployment — combined with return-to-office policies for many employers — is persuading the largest corporations that more business trips make sense.

“By the time we finish this year, assuming sort of the broader consensus view of a reasonably soft landing that by the time we get to the end of the year, we think you’ll be at more normalized levels of demand,” Hilton CEO Christopher Nassetta told analysts Feb. 7 on a quarterly call.

Marriott International, the largest hotel chain by room count, is also bullish about business travelers taking a slow-but-steady approach this year. “We continue to see incremental growth even coming out of the large corporates quarter‐over‐quarter,” Marriott CEO Tony Capuano said in mid-February.

There isn't one "best" airline credit card or one type of airline mile that's categorically better than the others, because it depends on which airline is most convenient for you.

What's the difference between airline credit cards and travel rewards credit cards?

Disneyland plan for long-term major development in Anaheim clears crucial hurdle

Dubbed DisneylandForward, the plan is not specific about what exactly Disney plans to build.

Disney officials cleared one of the final hurdles Monday for its theme park expansion plan, which they say would jump-start at least $1.9 billion of new development at the Anaheim resort over the next 10 years.

The DisneylandForward project was approved Monday night on a 5-1 vote by the Anaheim Planning Commission after almost three years of reviews and analysis. The project next will go before the City Council.

“I want to thank each and every person who came tonight to speak their minds, whether you agreed, disagreed or were neutral,” said commission Chairperson Lucille Kring. “I want to thank Disney for bringing this to us. Make us proud.”

“Together we are unequivocally making history, just like Walt Disney did almost 70 years ago with the city of Anaheim and Disneyland,” Ken Potrock, president of the Disneyland Resort, said at the meeting before the vote. “It’s a tremendous responsibility for all of us and a privilege to be a steward of this vision for this very, very special place.”

The requested changes to the park’s zoning would allow Disney — a dominant figure in Anaheim politics — more flexibility to reimagine its existing 490-acre footprint in Anaheim over the next few decades, mixing new attractions, theme parks, shops, restaurants and parking to “provide for continued, long-term growth of The Disneyland Resort,” the latest city report said.

Dozens of disgruntled Anaheim residents and Disneyland fans alike attended the meeting to voice their opinions about the proposal.

John Noteboom, an Anaheim resident for 27 years, lives on the western edge of the Disneyland Resort with his wife.

“As some of the closest neighbors to the proposed theme park district of Disneyland on the west side of the park,” he said, “we’ve had nothing but cooperation from Disney anytime an issue has come up.”

However, not all the comments from residents were positive.

Jeanine Robbins, who has lived in Anaheim about half a mile from Disneyland for 33 years, brought up a class-action lawsuit that was filed against Walt Disney Co. last week, alleging that Disney underpaid hotel maintenance workers.

“When they can take care of their existing employees, then they can come back with this ridiculous proposal,” she said. “If you pay your employees so little that they require food stamps and rent assistance and homeless shelter beds, then you are not a job creator. You are simply a moocher on the public dime.”

Margaret Patino, who has lived near Disneyland for 45 years, raised concerns over Magic Way, a street near the resort, being privatized for the potential project.

“Restricting the foot traffic on Magic Way for only Disney guests who will have their keycards is unfair,” she said. “Neighboring hotels, motels will not have access, leaving the surrounding residents to deal with increased traffic on Ball [Road], Katella [Avenue] and losing the access to the 5 Freeway.”

Anaheim officials approved plans during the 1990s that led to the growth of Disneyland Resort in the newly formed Anaheim Resort area, according to the DisneylandForward website .

“And while those plans resulted in major improvements to the entire Anaheim Resort,” the site says, “their ‘traditional’ district/zone approach does not allow for the diverse, integrated experiences theme park visitors now seek, severely limiting Disney’s ability to continue investing in Anaheim.”

The project doesn’t include specific plans for new attractions, but Disney officials have offered a vision for possible additions, such as immersive Frozen, Zootopia, Tron or Peter Pan experiences similar to those at Disney’s locations in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The project promises a minimum $1.9-billion investment in the theme park, lodging, entertainment, shopping and dining within a decade, according to city officials.

Dubbed DisneylandForward, the plan is not specific about what exactly Disneyland plans to build, but it asks Anaheim to relax zoning rules and give Disney flexibility to construct new rides, hotels and stores alongside one another.

Disneyland’s plan to reimagine the theme park into a more “immersive” experience may require up to $2.5 billion and a plan to privatize some Anaheim streets.

The city of Anaheim’s staff report on the project recommended the Planning Commission’s approval. The proposal now requires final approval from the City Council, likely in mid-April. Even though the new zoning has been approved, individual projects are still subject to city planning approval.

The proposal outlines an increase of 4,376 theme-park-related parking spaces, as well as a variety of traffic improvements, including adding bike lanes and pedestrian bridges and absorbing some local roadways into Disney’s oversight.

The expected development by Anaheim’s largest employer would generate significantly more economic output and tax revenue , according to an analysis commissioned by the Walt Disney Co. The new agreement, if approved, would also have Disney pony up $30 million for affordable housing within five years, $40 million for street and transportation improvements and $10 million for sewer upgrades.

“The DisneylandForward Project is expected to generate additional revenue to the city that will increase the city’s general fund to be used for a wide variety of public benefits, including funding police and fire personnel and resources, local school districts, parks, libraries, and capital improvements,” according to the city’s staff report.

Disneyland says renovation plans could bring $253 million annually to Anaheim’s economy

While Walt Disney Co. laid out a robust economic pitch to the city of Anaheim for plans to redevelop its existing theme park footprint, the company did not specify what exactly it wants to build.

The project’s environmental impact report found that the construction phase would have significant, unavoidable effects on noise pollution, air quality and greenhouse gas emissions in the surrounding community, but Disney officials cited mitigation measures, including installing 12-foot-tall noise barriers.

Many nearby residents and businesses have expressed concerns throughout the lengthy review process about noise, traffic, increased crime or pollution — but there was also much support for the project at a city workshop last month .

Some have also called on Disney to invest more in the community, given the scale of this project and how many of the company’s low-wage workers struggle to make ends meet.

Duane Roberts, the editor and publisher of website Anaheim Investigator , pointed to the massive Walt Disney Co.-funded 1,400 unit affordable housing project near Disney World in Central Florida, calling the promised $30 million for affordable housing in Anaheim “puny.” He said he wasn’t necessarily opposed to the DisneylandForward project, but wanted city officials to push for more local support from Disney.

“Why are we getting so little as compared to Florida?” Roberts asked city officials last month. “Do we not, like them, have a housing crisis in this state?”
