What I love about this lightweight jogging stroller is that you have several options to choose from.

You can get this as a single stroller , a double stroller , or bundle it with a car seat or bassinet!

Material: Rubber, nylon, polyester

For the features, it has “forever air” rubber tires and an all-wheel suspension system , making it smooth and agile for different terrains.

There’s also a magnetic peek-a-boo window on the canopy for easy monitoring, an adjustable handlebar, a leg support feature, and a 5-point harness to keep your baby safe and secure!

However, for first timers, the harness may be a bit confusing to figure out.

Another convenient feature is its easy one-hand folding mechanism. A lot of parents will find this easy to use!

Be careful with this stroller, as some parts may break if you’re not careful.

What makes this product special is that it’s actually a stroller frame that can accommodate car seats from different car seat manufacturers.

Britax, Chicco, Maxi-Cosi, Graco, you name it. This stroller frame is car seat compatible!

Since your baby won’t actually come in contact with this stroller frame, you only have to worry about the material your car seat is made of.

Make sure that the car seat you use is flame-retardant-free. If it has polyurethane foam, contact the company to make sure it’s flame-retardant-free too.

Material: Plastic, metal

This stroller frame has 2 cup holders with a small compartment in between them. It also has a large storage space underneath that’s big enough to fit a handbag!

It weighs less than 15 pounds and has a one-hand folding system. It’s a great alternative to non toxic baby strollers!

This product has a weight capacity of 45 pounds, which includes the car seat. It’s designed for infants that can fit in car seats only, which is a downside for those with toddlers.

However, I wouldn’t say this stroller is good for toddlers, especially if your baby grows fast !

Some people don’t like a 3-wheeled non toxic stroller because it can be faulty at times. If you’re looking for a great 4-wheel option , then the UPPAbaby Cruz V2 will not disappoint.

The Cruz V2 is another great high-end option that’s similar to the Vista V2.

If you don’t need an additional bassinet but still want to try out the UPPA Baby experience, then the Cruz V2 is a great pick-up.

This stroller is less versatile than the Vista V2 because you can’t attach the RumbleSeat for another baby.

Instead, you can only use the PiggyBack Ride-Along Board if you want this stroller to work for your infant and toddler simultaneously.

This stroller also has 5 recline options as opposed to the 6 from the Vista V2, and it’s also a bit lighter and less wide.

This is a simpler product that’s more compact and easy to handle!

There are a bunch of different colors, but I love the charcoal variant the best! For your little girl, this dusty pink stroller is lovely too!

A few drawbacks I have with this stroller is its price and it’s not a one-hand fold system. I could also use more storage.

Unfortunately, I don’t like how HEAVY this stroller is and requires two hands to fold.

Parts of this lightweight stroller are made of nylon, polyester, and polyurethane foam. However, no flame retardants were used so that’s great!

Material: Ethylene Vinyl Acetate

For an affordable lightweight stroller, it’s great how it has universal adapters that work well for different car products!

This non toxic umbrella stroller has an expandable sun canopy and a storage basket underneath. It isn’t the biggest, but it gives enough space to store different baby products.

What’s also great is the travel bag that comes with it. It’s the perfect travel companion for airplane rides!

The stroller doesn’t have the best storage, though. It also requires two hands to fold it, as if my hands weren’t full enough!

Even though there’s polyurethane fabric, it’s still free from toxic flame retardant chemicals and it’s completely safe for all babies.

Bugaboo is also part of the Science Based Targets Initiative. They set science-based emission and waste reduction goals they’re committed to achieving!

Bugaboo strollers rival UPPAbaby strollers for giving smooth rides because of the suspension system. It also has 4-wheel all-terrain stroller wheels that make it flexible for different surfaces.

I love the unique design of this stroller, which makes it stand out from the rest! It gives a plush, elevated, and rear-facing seat which is perfect for infants.

This stroller also comes with a rain cover, sun canopy, and an extra-large storage basket. You can also switch out the colors of the fabric, wheel caps, handlebar, and sun canopy!

There’s also a bassinet that comes with it , which you can easily attach to the stroller.

This all-around Bugaboo Fox product checks all boxes for a safe and great stroller, and it’s definitely one of my favorites!

It’s quite pricey and is not a one-motion fold, but it doesn’t change how GREAT this stroller is!

On the downside, these strollers are usually bulkier and heavier. It’s not the most convenient option for traveling through public transportation, stairs, tight spaces, and busy places.

Jogging Strollers

Jogging strollers have high suspension wheels that make them more maneuverable on any surface. These jogging strollers usually have 3 wheels too.

They have one front wheel that can swivel for flexibility, or be locked in place for more stability at higher speeds.

These work best on any terrain or surface . With added safety features of straps and harnesses, you don’t have to worry about your baby falling off!

Jogging strollers are on the bigger, bulkier, and heavier side. Although, they’re the safest option for active parents who frequently jog or hike.

Umbrella Strollers

Umbrella strollers are the most lightweight strollers you can buy. These strollers are designed for portability and recommended for parents who are looking to travel or go through busy places!

An umbrella stroller is perfect for tight spaces, convenience, airplane travel, and can be a lifesaver for any mom!

However, most umbrella strollers aren’t designed to be compatible with an infant car seat because of the lightweight frame. That also means they aren’t designed for babies 6 months and younger.

Instead of carrying your baby off the stroller, which could wake them up, you can just detach and lift the car seat and place it back inside your car!

The Harmful Chemicals in Strollers You Should AVOID

Babies come in direct contact with strollers, and they spend a lot of time inside them every day too.

Strollers that are 100% organic are unheard of, so going for a non toxic stroller is your best bet for the safety of your baby.

Here are a couple of harmful chemicals you should know more about before you buy a non toxic stroller.

Polyurethane Foam

Polyurethane foam is used in a lot of baby products including strollers. For strollers, these are commonly used for the handles and tires, which are less risky for your baby.

Although sometimes, they can still be used for the seat padding.

This toxic substance has been linked to the “off-gassing” of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

I’ve done a lot of research on the topic in order to bring you the best non-toxic baby strollers that are not only safer for your children, but also come with lots of great reviews and features that make your life easier.

Below you’ll find non-toxic jogging strollers, umbrella strollers with UV protection, car-seat compatible strollers, and a lot more.

In a Nutshell:

On my hunt for non-toxic strollers, I prioritized brands that are free from PFAS and flame retardants.

There is a lot of info below about what to look for (and recommended brands), but here is a quick overview of some of the non-toxic stroller options on the market:

• For a jogging stroller : Good news! Many of the brands below have options for non-toxic jogging strollers, including Bumbleride , Guava , and Chicco .

When it comes to certain consumer products, it’s relatively easy to find something that is 100% non-toxic, plastic-free, and made only from organic and natural materials.

That’s not the case when it comes to strollers. All strollers utilize quite a bit of plastic.

Unfortunately, all plastics do come with potential problems (the extent of which we still don’t know), but when they can’t be completely avoided, try not to fret.

What I suggest doing instead is prioritizing. Dodge the worst types of plastic when possible (such as PVC), and prioritize avoiding some of the worst chemical additives, such as flame retardants and PFAS.

Flame retardants used to be added to a lot of consumer goods, including furniture and children’s products (even though they don’t actually work to slow flames).

There are several different types of flame retardant chemicals, with some of the “worst” being polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs.

Generally, flame retardants are endocrine disruptors that are linked to things like:

• Developmental delays
• Fertility/reproductive problems

Before 2014, strollers sold in the US were required to pass flammability tests, which was difficult to do considering that many of the materials used (like polyurethane foam, for example) were easily flammable. This led manufacturers to add synthetic chemical flame retardants to their strollers.

When strollers became exempt from these requirements, many manufacturers kept using them anyway.

But in recent years, some states—such as California and New York—have started implementing more sweeping bans on flame retardants in certain types of consumer products, including ones made for babies and kids.

These state-based bans usually act as de facto national bans because manufacturers aren’t going to make different products for different states; they’re just going to change their processes across the board.

What this basically means for those of us in the United States is that although flame retardants have not been completely removed from strollers sold in the US, they’re largely on their way out!

An important note about flame retardants in the UK:

Unfortunately, as of late 2023, flame retardants are still required by law in the UK. This means that:

• If you buy any stroller in the UK, it most likely contains flame retardants. This includes some of the brands below that are generally FR-free except when they’re shipped to the UK (such as Bumbleride).
• If you buy a stroller from a UK/EU-based brand but have it shipped to the US, I would suggest reaching out to the brand before purchasing to make sure that the version of the stroller that you’re getting is free from flame retardants.

PFAS are similar to flame retardants in the sense that they used to be widely used in products like strollers, car seats, and lots of other consumer goods, but are now slowly being phased out.

These are the Teflon “forever chemicals” that are added to fabrics in order to make them resistant to water and/or stains.

PFAS exposure is linked to a wide range of health concerns, including:

• Testicular, bladder, or kidney cancer
• Thyroid dysfunction 
• Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
• Weakened response to vaccines  
• Reduced fertility
• Obesity  
• Birth defects

Many companies are switching to PFAS-free treatments such as C0 or polyurethane. While these treatments may not be perfect (little is currently known about C0), I still believe that these options are safer than their PFAS-laden predecessors.

When shopping for PFAS-free strollers, you’ll want to look for brands that are completely free from all PFAS, not just a couple of them. There are literally thousands of different kinds of PFAS, and most of them are similar in terms of their potential health effects. So if you see a stroller brand advertise their treatments as “PFOA-free” or PFOS-free,” that should be a yellow flag. Those are just TWO types of PFAS, and it does NOT necessarily mean the product is totally PFAS-free.

On a related note, you may see some brands use the term “PFC-free.” This stands for perfluorinated  chemicals  (whereas PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances ). PFC is an older term that scientists have generally moved away from because it’s confusing, but it is still used sometimes. ( You can read more about this here. ) But the important thing to know is that “PFC-free” DOES refer to the entire group of chemicals. So if you see “PFC-free” on a stroller, you should be in good shape.

What About Durable Water Repellent (DWR)?

As you shop for strollers (or other types of products ), you’ll see that some products are treated with a DWR finish. This is what makes it waterproof or water-resistant.

This can be confusing because DWR treatments MAY or MAY NOT contain PFAS. There are different formulations of DWR; some of which are PFAS-free and others that are not.

Therefore, just be aware that if you see a product that advertises the use of DWR, you may want to clarify whether or not it uses PFAS.

PVC is one of the “worst” kinds of plastic . For strollers, it’s often used for thin plastic parts and those clear rain windows.

Vinyl chloride itself is linked to several kinds of cancer (especially for those who work with it in an industrial capacity and/or have been exposed via disasters like the East Palestine train derailment ), but it can also contain additional toxicants such as phthalates or heavy metals.

Ideally, you’ll want to look for “better” plastics, such as polyethylene. Or at least look for PVC that is explicitly free from things like phthalates, lead, and cadmium.

As I mentioned above, it’s impossible to completely avoid synthetics when buying a stroller. That said, here are some other chemicals you may want to try and avoid if you can:

• Phthalates (which are endocrine disruptors and are used to soften plastics)
• BPA and other bisphenols (which are also endocrine disruptors and are used to harden plastics)
• Polyurethane foam

Another thing to note is that when it comes to certain chemicals like PFAS, there is always the risk of contamination.

Sometimes, PFAS can make their way into products via the manufacturing process, even if they were not added intentionally.

In my opinion, this is why we need more sweeping legislation in order to get these toxic chemicals out of our supply chains entirely… But that’s another topic for a different day.

There is essentially no way to know for sure if something is 100% PFAS-free unless you test it in a lab, which is really expensive. (And even these lab tests are imperfect, but again, I won’t get into that right now!)

The good news is that even if something is contaminated with PFAS, the amount of PFAS in the product is going to be much lower than it would be if it was intentionally-added.

That’s why our recommended non-toxic baby strollers are free from intentionally-added PFAS (and other toxicants).

With sustainability becoming more and more trendy each year, most companies are trying to implement more eco-conscious initiatives throughout their products and supply chains. This is, of course, an amazing thing!

However… it can also make things confusing.

In my research, I came across quite a few brands that have multiple eco-friendly features and processes in place, but are still using toxic chemicals like PFAS and/or flame retardants.

The only reason I bring this up is just to give you a gentle reminder not to be afraid to dig deeper and/or ask more questions from the brand in question if things are unclear.

I get it. Having a new baby is expensive. Strollers are expensive. And finding a stroller that fits all your criteria in terms of safety as well and functionality is no small feat.

So if you’re stressed out about not being able to afford a new non-toxic baby stroller, here are a few suggestions:

• Search for secondhand strollers on platforms like GoodBuyGear , Rebelstork , and Facebook marketplace. If possible, try to get your hands on a stroller that was made before 2014 (since all strollers made before then contain flame retardants).
• Also, check with the brand itself to see if they have any refurbished options. Many brands are implementing secondhand options in order to increase the circularity of their products.
• Put your stroller on your baby registry so that someone else might buy it for you! 😉
• Consider just getting organic accessories. For example, you might buy the Bumbleride organic cotton insert and just use it with whatever stroller you already have (if it fits). So even though you’re not getting the entire non-toxic stroller, you’re at least controlling the material that’s in direct contact with your baby.
• Try not to worry too much. You can’t live a *perfectly* non-toxic life, and if buying your ideal stroller is just not going to happen, that’s okay. There are many other things you can prioritize that will make a positive difference for your child. The products you put on their skin, the food they eat, etc… There are many opportunities to decrease the environmental toxicants in your home, and it’s okay to prioritize according to what’s realistic for you.

The good news is that PFAS and flame retardants seem to finally be on their way out of consumer products. Many brands are switching to PFAS-free water/stain-resistant treatments such as C0, while others—such as Guava —are skipping or minimizing the extra chemical treatments altogether (which might be a good idea, considering that PFAS might actually be useless in preventing stains anyway).

This general trend toward phasing out PFAS is happening in part because of changing regulations, as well as consumer pressure.

And this means that brands are making changes often. Bugaboo , for example, just completed their PFAS phase-out in July of 2023.

So, with that being said, we are going to try and keep this guide updated as more brands get rid of these harmful chemicals. So, stay tuned!

In addition to being made with safe materials, your stroller has to work for you . Here are some other things to think about when it comes to your preferences, needs, and lifestyle:

Not every stroller works with every car seat. Some of the brands below sell their own car seat (or have partnered with a car seat brand) so that you can buy a whole set that will work together.

Others, however, sell car seat adaptors (separately), which are compatible with certain car seats and not others. So, before buying your stroller and/or car seat, be sure to check the details to make sure you can combine the products you’re planning to use together.

Consider the opened-up size as well as the folded-up size. Some double strollers are so wide that they don’t fit through all doorways. Some strollers fold up small enough that they can fit in airplane overhead bins.

So, think about your travel plans and day-to-day routines to make sure you get the right size stroller.

Pretty much every parent has experienced the frustration of trying to fold up a stroller with one hand while holding a crying kid in the other.

Many of today’s strollers have magical one-handed folding mechanisms, which is amazing. Consider whether or not this is a high priority for you.

If you’re planning on having more kids in the near future, you may want to get a stroller that can be expanded to fit your growing family. This might save you some money in the long-run. Zoe, for example, offers strollers that can hold up to four kids!

Also: will the stroller be used for a newborn, or mostly just toddlers/older kid(s)? This may influence what kinds of seats and features you need.

Many strollers have recommended weight limits, so ensure your child falls within the specified range. For newborns, look for strollers with a bassinet attachment or seats that recline fully for proper support. You may also want to look for adjustable features like seat recline positions and footrest height so that the stroller can grow with your child.

Other preferences and lifestyle factors you might want to consider are things like:

• How much storage do you need? (And do you need cupholders and other little things like that?)
• Will you be taking the strollers for runs? On trails? What kind of terrain do you plan on traversing with your kid in tow?
• Will you be taking the stroller to Disney? They have limits on stroller size!

Standard strollers : Sometimes called “city” strollers or “everyday” strollers, these are your go-to, all-purpose strollers that are perfect for everyday use. They’re typically equipped with comfortable seats, storage baskets and diaper bag holders, and maneuverable wheels. Great for strolling around the park, running errands, or going on adventures with your little one.

Jogging strollers : If you’re a fitness enthusiast or love going for jogs, jogging strollers tend to have sturdy frames, large air-filled tires, and a suspension system to handle rough terrains.

Lightweight strollers: When it comes to convenience and portability, lightweight strollers are the champs. They’re compact, easy to fold, and lightweight (hence the name). Perfect for travel, quick trips, or navigating crowded spaces.

Umbrella strollers: Need something compact and fuss-free? Umbrella strollers are your answer. These lightweight strollers fold up like an umbrella and are easy to carry and store.

Travel system strollers: Travel system strollers are all about versatility. They consist of a stroller frame that can be used with an infant car seat. This means you can seamlessly transfer your sleeping baby from the car to the stroller without disturbing their dreams. 

Double strollers: For families with twins or siblings close in age, double strollers are a game-changer. They come in different configurations—side-by-side or tandem (one seat in front of the other). Double the cuteness, double the fun, and double the joy of strolling together.

Alright, now let’s get to our recommended brands!

Free from: PFAS, Fire Retardants (except when shipped to the UK), PVC, BPA, Phthalates, Polyurethane Foam, Chlorine, Vinyl, and Formaldehyde Options: All-Terrain , Double Stroller , Reversible Stroller & two jogging strollers (the Speed and the IRONMAN ) Price Range: $699-1,029

Bumbleride is definitely one of the best brands for non-toxic strollers that are free from all of the most concerning toxic chemicals, like PFAS, flame retardants, and PVC. The fabric they use is made of OEKO-TEX certified recycled PET.

Bumbleride strollers check a lot of boxes when it comes to performance as well. They’ve got hundreds of positive reviews and have earned the trust of conscious parents who need a stroller that’s not only safe but is also durable and easy to use in real life.

One example: Your Bumbleride stroller will still be able to hold up in the rain. To make it water-resistant, they use a PFAS-free durable water repellent (DWR) called C0. C0 is becoming very popular these days as a water/stain-resistant coating that is PFAS-free and approved by third parties like bluesign®, ZDHC, and OEKO-TEX.

Bumbleride has great options for non-toxic jogging strollers and all-terrain strollers. They utilize air-filled tires (instead of foam-filled) and all-wheel suspension, making these strollers a good choice for you if you live in an urban environment or want to be able to take your stroller out of the trails.

Even though most of their strollers can be used for jogging (pretty much all of them except for the Era Reversible Stroller), they have two options that are meant specifically for jogging : the Speed and the IRONMAN. These have a bunch of safety features, including things like a wrist strap to prevent runaways, a canopy for sun reflection, 360 swivel, full recline, and extra reflective elements (only the IRONMAN has the extra reflectors).

Their strollers have a bunch of other super useful features, too—like plenty of storage pockets , ergonomic handle trigger release with one-step fold/standing stow, and more.

They have a handy Stroller Comparison Chart , too, to help you easily see the difference between their options.

Bumbleride doesn’t make its own car seat, but its strollers are compatible with many of the popular car seat brands ( see here ). They’ve also partnered with Clek to bring you a car seat/travel system that works well with their strollers. (Just make sure you get the Thunder or Pitch Black colorway for the car seat, as those are the only ones that are PFAS-free at this time.)

Lastly, Bumbleride offers a ton of accessories to make your life easier, from car seat adaptors to a mini board for toddlers to ride on (!) , to a collection of organic cotton inserts to keep your baby warm and comfortable, and more.

They also make it easy to repair your stroller if you ever need to, with a range of replacement parts and a customer support team to help you out.

Free from:  PFAS, flame retardants, PVC, BPA, phthalates. Options:   Single-to-Double Stroller Price Range: $450

Mockingbird’s modular non-toxic strollers are also free from flame retardants, PFAS, and other potential toxins.

Equipped with an extendable UPF 50+ all-weather canopy , go-anywhere wheels mirror, and a generously sized basket that holds all the essentials up to 25 lbs, it’s no wonder why these strollers come with thousands of positive reviews from happy parents.

Plus, it’s got the one-hand fold!

You can easily switch between forward-facing and parent-facing modes. They offer a 2nd Seat Kit and a Riding Board , which means it can technically hold up to three little ones. They’ve also got an attachable bassinet option for newborns, car seat adaptor , and lots of other optional accessories like snack trays and more.

Mockingbird also did a bunch of testing for durability, too. They put the strollers under repeated impacts and 10,000 simulated sidewalk curb maneuvers to ensure they can withstand any knocks and bangs that may come.

Mockingbird also offers a 30-day trial and a generous limited lifetime warranty.

Free from:  PFAS, Flame Retardants, limits on VOCs Options:   Single strollers , lightweight/travel strollers , convertible/bassinet-ready strollers , reversible strollers , and travel systems Price Range : $500-1,200

Because of the fact that Nuna has figured out a way for their car seats to meet US flammability standards without added flame retardants , Nuna is a good option for full travel systems that include both non-toxic strollers and car seats.

Many of Nuna’s strollers and car seats are GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means they’ve been verified to be below a certain threshold when it comes to VOCs and other toxicants like phthalates. Although GREENGUARD doesn’t currently ban PFAS, Nuna has told me that their products are indeed PFAS-free.

They definitely have several different options to suit your growing family, including single strollers and convertibles.

Most of Nuna’s strollers come equipped with large baskets that can hold a lot, plus UPF 50+ rating canopies for sun protection. They have add-on accessories like snack trays, cup holders, travel bags, and. more.

They also use healthier fabrics for many of their liners and accessories—like organic cotton and TENCEL.

Free from: Flame Retardants, PFAS, PVC. Options: Roam Stroller (crossover/jogging stroller) Price Range: $650

Guava’s Roam non-toxic jogging stroller is GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means it’s been third-party verified to meet a certain set of standards when it comes to volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

This is definitely good news, but it doesn’t necessarily mean anything about flame retardants and/or PFAS. So, I reached out to Guava and they told me:

“We have avoided using waterproofing & stain-resistant chemicals to make sure the stroller doesn’t have PFAS or their newer substitutes. The stroller does not contain PFAS. The weather resistance of the polyester material is due to the tight weave and PU coating on the back. Please note it is not fully waterproof…water will bead up on it initially, but will absorb over time. However, this will not damage the material and it will dry out. For stain resistance, we’ve also avoided using chemicals. Rather, we have simply made the seat liner removable and washable for the inevitable spill.”

So, that’s obviously very good news that the Guava Roam Stroller is PFAS-free , but parents may want to bear in mind that it does not have an alternative water-resistant treatment added to it. This won’t be a big deal for most people, but it’s just worth noting.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Guava stroller is not free from polyurethane foam. The Guava team told me that the stroller comes with a FR-free polyurethane foam seat padding.

One of the main selling points of the Guava is that it has what they call “3D Nesting Fold™,” which means it  “folds 50% smaller than traditional joggers to fit even in small vehicles.”

Some other key features that joggers might be interested in, include:

• Lock/unlock from the handlebar for quick transitions between walking and running.
• Airless, rubber tires (so you don’t have to worry about punctures) and independent suspension for all types of terrain.
• A “60-day Test Ride” policy, which means if you don’t love the stroller after you’ve tried it for 60 days, you can get a full refund.

You also have the option to buy extra accessory bundles, including a car seat adaptor , snack tray, rain cover, extra storage, and more.

Free from: Intentionally added fire retardants, PFAS, BPA, and phthalates. Options: Various full-sized strollers , jogging strollers , lightweight strollers , and double strollers . Plus they also have a frame stroller , which is a more affordable & lightweight option that fits a newborn’s car seat. Price Range: $110-400

I have to admit: this one kind of surprised me! But Chicco’s strollers are now free from both flame retardant s and PFAS .

(Car seats are a little different. If you get a Chicco car seat, make sure you get one of the ClearTex ones to ensure it’s FR-free. But none of their products have any added PFAS.)

One of the big selling points about Chicco is its wide range of options, as well as the fact that they’re available at big box stores like Target and Walmart !

They’ve got options for non-toxic umbrella strollers, jogging strollers, modular strollers , and ones that are car seat compatible.

If you want to go with a full travel set , I recommend checking out the Corso Primo ClearTex Travel System because that one comes with the ClearTex fabric (as well as other material safety features like GREENGUARD Gold certification and organic cotton inserts). It comes with an infant car seat that attaches to the stroller, but then you can switch the stroller around as your child grows. (It’s got a total of six configurations!) It’s also got extras like a one-hand fold, a zip-extend canopy, rear-suspension wheels, and lots of storage.

Note that not all of Chicco’s strollers are PVC-free . For more details, you’ll want to check the specifications on each stroller’s product page to see which parts contain PVC.

Free from: PFAS, Flame retardants (when sold in the US) Options: They offer a wide variety of strollers, including newborn , double , lightweight , all terrain , and more. Price Range: $1,300-2,198

This Netherlands-based brand offers more non-toxic strollers. Since they sell products around the world, whether or not they are free from flame retardants depends on the country. But Bugaboo did confirm with me that all products sold in the US are free from flame retardants.

Additionally, they told me that as of July 2023, all of their products are PFAS-free. (This may be important to know if you’re considering a secondhand Bugaboo stroller that was made/sold before that time.)

Bugaboo’s strollers are on the more expensive side, but they do have a lot of different options, including ones that have bassinets and reversible/convertible strollers.

One of the things that sets them apart from the other brands is how customizable they are in terms of fabrics and colorways!

Free from: Flame retardants, PFAS, polyurethane foam. Options: Bēbee Lightweight Stroller Price Range: $200

Bombi’s strollers do not have added flame retardants or PFAS. They confirmed with me that they do not add durable water repellants of any kind to their strollers.

They only have one star offering, which is their Bēbee Lightweight Stroller (which is available in a variety of colors).

This is another non-toxic stroller that comes with a magical one-handed fold . It’s also got a bunch of other features, like ‘infinite recline,’ an extra large umbrella canopy (with UV protection), a 5-point safety harness, and lots of storage.

Plus, the fabrics are made almost entirely of recycled plastic bottles, a tree is planted with each purchase, and 1% of sales are donated to environmental non-profit organizations.

They’ve got several optional accessories, too, including a car seat adaptor , footmuff, snack tray, and more.

Note that not all of Bombi’s products are PVC-free. Their rain cover is made out of PVC.

Free from: Flame retardants, PFAS, phthalates, BPA Options: Hub+ everyday/city stroller , Day+ bassinet stroller, Aer+ lightweight stroller Price Range: $449-1,099

Joolz also has several everyday strollers that are free from PFAS and flame retardants.

Their Aer+ lightweight stroller is good for toddlers and kids. It’s got a 5-point harness, folds up easily and compactly, and is airplane-compatible.

The Day+ stroller is a good option for babies because it comes with a bassinet/carry cot that’s suitable for newborns. The Hub+ can also fit the bassinet but then can be converted to a toddler stroller afterward.

They’ve also got extra features and accessories like an extra-large sunhood/canopy, a bumper bar, storage baskets, option footmuffs, snack trays, and more.

They also offer a 10-year transferable warranty , which means if you hand the stroller down to another new parent, the warranty stays with the stroller.

They also plant a tree with each purchase.

Free from: Flame Retardants, PFAS, BPA, Pesticides, Phthalates, Polyurethane Foam, Formaldehyde. Options: The Tour (everyday single stroller), The Traveler (lightweight single stroller), The Terra (jogging stroller), The Twin (double stroller), The Tandem (a single-file double stroller), The Trio (seats 3), and The Tribe (seats 4). Price Range: $249-649

Zoe is a really great option if you already have or planning on having a lot of kids. Most of their strollers can be adapted to either add or remove seats based on how many little ones you need to put in it. For example, you can turn The Tour single stroller into a double, or you can turn The Trio triple stroller into a quad!

In terms of materials, all of Zoe’s strollers are made without the most harmful chemicals like PFAS and flame retardants. For the plastic parts, they use recycled polyester, nylon, EVA, and food-grade polyethylene. Instead of PFAS, they use a 600D polyurethane-coated fabric to make the seat and canopy water-resistant.

Another one of Zoe’s main selling points is how lightweight they are. Their lightest weight ones (The Traveler and The Tour) are 12-13 lbs, and the heaviest one (The Tribe, which seats four) comes in at 32.2. lbs. The singles and doubles can also be folded using one hand.

They don’t make their own car seat, but they do offer a click-in car seat adaptor that works with several popular car seat brands, like Chicco and Graco. Not all of their strollers are car seat compatible, though , so just make sure to check before buying.

They’ve got a lot of extras, too, like cupholders (for both parents and little ones), spacious storage baskets, reclinable seats, and expandable UPF 50+ canopies for sun protection. In terms of accessories, they offer add-ons like snack trays, extra storage compartments, carry-straps, all-terrain wheels, and more.

Many of their strollers do come with leatherette handles, but they are made with PU, not PVC. You can opt to replace those with snack trays if you want.

Lastly, most of their strollers are Disney-approved and meet all park requirements! (Except The Terra jogging stroller.)

Free from: Flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, phthalates, PVC Options: Greentom Classic , Carrycot , Reversible , 2-in-1 , 3-in-1 . Price Range: €279.00+

Greentom’s strollers are made to grow with your child from newborn to about four years old. They’re out of recycled materials, and the mattress is made out of OEKO-TEX and GOTS certified organic wool. They offer accessories like car seat adaptors and footmuffs, too.

Instead, of PFAS, Greentom uses a PU coating on their strollers to make them water-resistant.

Greentom is currently only available for purchase in Europe, but if you’re in the US, you can sometimes find one secondhand on a site like Good Buy Gear or Facebook Marketplace.

It comes with a Lifetime Warranty, too!

Here are some other strollers I researched to find out if they are PFAS/FR-free or not:

• Britax/BOB : These two brands are owned by the same company. They are free of flame retardants, but are probably not free from PFAS. When I reached out to them to ask, they told me that they use a DWR finish, but refused to answer me about whether or not the finish uses PFAS.
• Graco : As far as I can tell, Graco strollers are NOT free from PFAS or flame retardants.
• Joovy : Joovy’s strollers are free from flame-retardants, BPA, and phthalates, but are not PFAS-free as of fall 2023.
• MaxiCosi : Their PureCosi™ accessories are free from flame retardants, but it’s unclear or they contain PFAS and/or if any of their other products contain these chemicals. I emailed them to ask and they did not answer my question. They sent back a standard reply that literally said nothing at all about PFAS.
• Mountain Buggy / phil&teds : These two brands are owned by the same company. I reached out to them and they told me that “The DWR treatment for the product may contain PFAS.”
• Naturkind : They do have several sustainability initiatives, but their strollers are not PFAS- or flame-retardant-free. They also only ship to Europe at this time.
• Silver Cross : It’s unclear whether Silver Cross strollers that are sold in the US have flame retardants and/or PFAS additives. I’ve reached out to them to ask and am still waiting to hear back.
• Stokke: I really want to be able to recommend Stokke’s because they have high-quality products and lots of positive reviews. I know that at least some of their products are PFAS-free and instead use a “BIONIC FINISH®” which is PFAS-free finish. But unfortunately, they have not been clear with me about whether or not all of their strollers are free from PFAS and/or flame retardants. I may add them in the future if I can get a straight answer from them.
• UPPABaby : Some of UPPABaby strollers are free of flame retardants, but not all. When I reached out, they told me that “We do not use PFAS on our car seats, seat liners, bassinet lining, or mattress covers” and that they “are committed to meeting new governmental regulations as they come into effect.” So, it sounds like they’re making progress, but I personally would like them to be more explicit…

Newborns don’t necessarily need a special stroller, but it’s important to consider their specific needs and safety. While some strollers are suitable for newborns, others may require additional accessories or attachments to provide proper support and comfort. Look for strollers that offer reclining seats or bassinet attachments, as these can provide a more secure and comfortable position for your newborn.

Additionally, ensure that the stroller has proper head and neck support, as well as a five-point harness for added safety (which most of the brands above offer). It’s always a good idea to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations to choose a stroller that meets the specific needs of your newborn.

Strollers are one of the more expensive items for your baby, so you definitely want to do your research before you buy. Along with figuring out the right configuration and features for your growing family, it’s also essential to avoid toxic materials, coatings, and other components of strollers. After all, your child will spend a lot of time here in the next few years! Below you will find the best non-toxic strollers of 2021.

In this guide we’ll go over what you need to look for and what should you avoid when buying a non-toxic stroller.

What to Avoid: Toxic Chemicals in Strollers

There’s no shortage of toxins lurking in strollers. In fact, it can be incredibly hard to find a stroller that is free from toxins like flame retardants, polyfoam, DWRs, and PVC. We’ll get into each of these below.

Flame Retardants

Before 2014, strollers sold in the US had to pass very stringent flammability tests. TB 117 required strollers to be able to survive an open fire for 12 seconds, which led to manufacturers dousing stroller fabrics with harmful flame retardants.

After strollers became exempt from these flammability requirements, manufacturers could (and arguably should) have stopped using flame retardants in their strollers.

Unfortunately, while many manufacturers did stop treating their strollers with these chemicals themselves, they didn’t require their materials suppliers to do the same. This means that polyurethane foam and fabrics such as polyester may well still be treated with flame retardants before they make it into the finished stroller.

What’s the problem with flame retardants? Well, in short, these chemicals have been linked to :

• Hormonal (endocrine and thyroid) disruption
• Reproductive health issues and infertility
• Increased risk of cancer
• Neurological damage
• Hazardous effects on fetal development
• Hazardous effects on child brain development (as noted by the American Academy of Pediatrics ).

Brominated Flame Retardants

Some of the worst flame retardants are polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). These are no longer produced in the US and are illegal in some states. However, PBDEs are still used by manufacturers in countries such as China and India, where most strollers are made. There’s no clear regulation on the import of products doused with PBDEs into the US, even for baby products such as strollers, car seats, bouncers, and baby carriers.

Even trickier, many manufacturers don’t even know if their products contain these chemicals because different batches of their materials may have been treated differently by suppliers. I’ve seen this play out several times where companies who state their products were free of brominated flame retardants were found to in fact have those flame retardants by independent testing.

When reaching out to stroller companies, many declined or were unable to satisfactorily answer the simple question of whether their strollers were free from flame retardants.

As always, the more of us who ask for accountability on these questions, the more likely companies are to feel the pressure to have a secure, transparent supply chain that prohibits hazardous chemicals.

Polyurethane Foam

Polyurethane foam is almost entirely unavoidable when shopping for strollers. Most manufacturers use this foam to provide cushioning in the seats and sides and even in handles and tires. Made from petroleum products, polyurethane foam is highly flammable, meaning it is very often treated with flame retardants.

In addition to potentially being laced with flame retardants, polyurethane foam breaks down over time to release toxic dust and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs can cause respiratory irritation, skin irritation, and other health issues.

While foam is common in strollers, your best bet is to look for strollers where at least the seat is foam-free. Foam in tires and handles poses less of a risk to your baby’s health than foam in a stroller seat, head rest, or in play gyms , change mats, and crib mattresses .

Look out in particular for strollers with bassinets. These commonly have a polyurethane foam mattress.

As with flame retardants, many manufacturers don’t like to reveal whether their strollers contain polyurethane foam. One way to get at least some reassurance is to see if a stroller has Oeko-Tex or EcoInstitut certification.

This isn’t a guarantee that a stroller is free from polyurethane, but it does mean the stroller has been tested and found not to emit VOCs at a level above what is currently deemed harmful.

Durable water repellents (DWRs) are coatings added to fabrics to make them water-resistant. Strollers often include textiles treated at the factory with DWRs, many of which are fluoropolymers (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAs) that are thin, often fairly ineffective, and that don’t last all that long before retreatment is needed.

In the past, DWRs were typically sprayed onto fabric as a chemical solution, or the fabric was dipped in the chemicals. This involved the use of chemical solvents.

More recently, chemical vapor deposition has replaced this process, helping to eliminate the use of harmful solvents during DWR application. This process also requires less of the DWR.

PFAS are increasingly recognized as toxic to humans and other animals. They are even considered potentially hazardous to human health by the US Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ).

PFAS are called forever chemicals because they persist in our environment forever. They end up in our waterways, drinking water, and our bloodstream.

Some of the more widely acknowledged health effects of PFAS include:

• increases in cholesterol levels
• effects on immune function
• impacts on infant birth weight
• thyroid hormone disruption.

So, are DWRs and PFASs essential in strollers and other products? In a word, no. Many companies have phased these out without affecting the performance of their strollers.

Some use fabrics that are naturally water repellent, while others use silicon- and hydrocarbon-based finishes instead, with plant-based waxes and treatments also increasingly popular. This is what you want to look for!

The best way to see if a stroller contains potentially harmful DWRs is to ask the company directly as many don’t advertise the material make-up of their fabrics.

Some, however, do clearly state that their strollers are ‘PFC-free’ (or perfluorinated chemical-free), though you’ll still want to check to see which waterproofing chemicals if any, they use in place of PFC as these are only one type of PFAS.

PVC is the world’s third most common synthetic plastic, so it’s no surprise it’s present in many strollers. Typically, PVC is used in rain covers as well as in storage mesh and other thinner fabric components of a stroller.

To make PVC flexible, manufacturers often use phthalates, or plasticizers. Only a handful of these are banned in the US, leaving a loophole for manufacturers.

Adherence to Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) standards is not a guarantee that a stroller is free from PVC or phthalates. Instead, a company needs to explicitly say that their strollers are PVC-free and phthalate-free, not ‘phthalate-safe.’

Exposure to PVC and phthalates has been linked to various health effects including:

• increased risk of cancer
• birth defects
• disruption of the endocrine system.

As with PFAs, the production of PVC is also harmful to workers, so if you care about all families, not just your own, this is a material to avoid.

Leatherette

Leatherette is a fake leather which is generally made of vinyl or plastic. Due to potential toxins (heavy metals including lead) commonly found both conventional leather and fake leather I personally avoid.

A few stroller companies below offer leatherette options on the handlebars for both children and adults. These brands have non-leatherette options as well.

Buying Used Strollers

You do need to be very careful with hand-me-down or used strollers. If you are buying one of the brands recommended here make sure the manufacture date was after the flame retardant regulation changes in 2014.

What to look for in Non-Toxic Strollers

When deciding on a non-toxic stroller, it’s a good idea to look for certifications such as OEKO-Tex, REACH, RoHS, Bluesign, and GOTS and GOLS (if materials include organic cotton or latex).

Organic & Natural Materials

Organic, natural materials are rare in strollers as companies favor hardwearing, synthetic materials such as tightly woven polyester or nylon.

As such, OEKO-Tex tends to be the main certification to look for. OEKO-Tex will test to ensure low or no presence of 100 hazardous chemicals.

Only a small number of manufacturers go to the effort and expense of obtaining and maintaining OEKO-Tex certifications, but a good rule of thumb is to look for strollers companies based in Europe, where they are subject to the REACH regulations governing the use of toxic chemicals.

Bumbleride and Greentom, use OEKO-Tex certified fabrics.

Free of Toxins and Heavy Metals

Few manufacturers state comprehensively that their strollers are free from PVC, phthalates, BPA (and alternatives), flame retardants, and PFCs or other PFAs. If they do make these claims, be sure they apply to the entire stroller, not just one part.

In my opinion, companies should also be testing regularly for heavy metals and other contaminants and should release the results of those tests for full transparency.

Sadly, this just doesn’t happen consistently, though one company, Bugaboo, has demonstrated that they regularly test their products and were proactive in recalling a potentially hazardous component.

Safe Water-Proofing

PFA free waterproofing either from polyurethane-coated polyester fabric (600D) or plant-based oils is preferable. Both options are considered non-toxic, with plant-based oils being the most non-toxic option.

Other Considerations When Buying a Stroller

The materials used to make a stroller aren’t the only things to think about when making your non-toxic stroller, of course. If you already have kids, you’ll want to consider the potential for a ride-on board at the back, or a double (triple, or quadruple!) stroller. Other things to consider include:

Car Seat Capability

Not all stroller frames work with every detachable car seat, though some adaptors are available that can help you combine products from different companies

How Easy it is to Break Down and Set-Up

Do you have somewhere to store the stroller without folding it down first? Will you be traveling a lot with the stroller? Will it fit in your vehicle?

There is nothing worse than struggling to get a stroller opened or closed while also juggling your baby. I can’t tell you the number of times I had a baby screaming in the car seat while I couldn’t get my stroller broken down. It’s always a stressful situation. When you have a stroller that is easy to breakdown you realize the value in that!

Size / Width

Some strollers are far wider than others and can be difficult to get through tiny spaces, such as in older buildings or single doors (I’m looking at you double BOB!).

Stroller Use

You’ll also want to consider how you’ll use the stroller. If it’s for occasional use for a slightly older child and you’re happy to carry your essentials, a lightweight umbrella stroller might be just right.

If you tend to take the whole nursery with you when you head out, look for a stroller with lots of (well-balanced!) storage options as just hooking things onto handlebars can be very dangerous and may tip the stroller.

If you’re hoping to take your baby on your morning runs or bike rides (once they’re old enough for it to be safe), a jogging stroller or bike stroller is essential. And if you’re planning on taking your baby on forest walks on uneven terrain, consider the wheels and suspension on a stroller – most won’t be able to tackle anything rougher than a bumpy sidewalk.

The Best Non-Toxic Strollers of 2021

The good news is that some stroller companies are starting to take the idea of using non-toxic materials more seriously. The bad news is that many are not. So, what follows is a round-up of the best non-toxic strollers and the ones least likely to expose you and your baby to any toxic chemicals.

In top place is Bumbleride – a company that uses recycled plastic bottles (PET) for the fabric on their strollers and has an ISO 14001 certified, family-run factory in Taiwan that uses solar power for energy, has clear water treatment policies, a recycling program, and helps keep plastic waste out of the landfill.

Bumbleride strollers are:

• Free from chemical flame retardants (except in the UK, where they’re required by law)
• Made with thermoplastic rubber (TPR) handlebars and frame – durable, recyclable, lower energy to produce
• Free of polyurethane foam
• Available in the Era model which has a cork handlebar and up to 25% recycled plastic
• PFC-free, using a plant-based oil for water repellency instead
• Bluesign® certified
• Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) certified
• Free from PVC, phthalates, and BPA
• OEKO-Tex 100 certified

Bumbleride offers an organic cotton seat stroller liner (which I LOVE!), an organic cotton infant insert for their strollers , a PVC-free rain cover , and a stroller board for older children .

Bumbleride currently makes these models:

Bumbleride Era City Stroller

The Bumbleride Era City Stroller is the best of the bunch. This is a reversible single stroller that is lightweight, adjustable, easy to use and is slim for access in and out of doors, with a convenient canopy and a cork handlebar instead of plastic.

Bumbleride Indie Stroller and Indie Twin Stroller

If you’re looking for a stroller that will work for the urban environment and trails, the Bumbleride Indie Stroller , and Indie Twin Stroller , is it. The tires are filled with air, not foam, and can handle weights up to 90 lbs. A large cargo pocket is also at the bottom of this stroller for all your gear.

Bumbleride Speed Jogging Single Stroller

The Bumbleride Speed Jogging Single Stroller boasts a host of safety features. This jogging stroller has a lightweight aluminum frame with 5-point breakaway harness, a canopy for sun protection, and a parent wrist-strap to prevent runaway strollers on those downhill stretches.

Bumbleride Adaptor

If you’re in need of an adaptor to make your existing car seat work with a Bumbleride stroller, the company offers a car seat adaptor that works with many other brands. Check to make sure the adaptor works for the car seat you have.

Zoe Strollers

Zoe specializes in lightweight strollers and umbrella strollers and, like Bumbleride, typically don’t use polyurethane foam in their strollers.

Zoe strollers:

• Are free of flame retardants
• Are free from polyurethane foam
• Made in China
• Have a 5-point harness made of plastic
• Do not contain phthalates
• Use 600D coated fabric (i.e., polyester coated with polyurethane for waterproofing) for the seat and canopy
• Use EVA plastic for the wheels and have an aluminum frame
• Carry JPMA certification and meet ASTM safety standards

Zoe offers strollers from singles to quads to fit your families needs.

In some models, they offer a leatherette upgrade on the handlebars for you and your child. I have linked below the strollers which are free of leatherette.

The Traveler

The Zoe Traveler is the ultimate lightweight stroller and can be collapsed with one hand. This can be carried as a backpack and can fit in the overhead compartment on an airplane.

The Zoe Tour+ Classic is lightweight, compact, everyday stroller. You can expand this stroller from a single to a double if you have another addition in your family.

The Twin+ Classic

The Zoe Twin+ Classic is a lightweight double stroller that fits through a standard doorway with ease! You can also expand this stroller for your growing family into a triple or quad with an add-on seat.

Other Zoe Strollers

Zoe also makes these strollers:

The Tandum+ Classic which is a tandum stroller that can go from a double to single in seconds.

The Trio+ Classic which is great if you have 3 under 5. You can also turn this into a double or upgrade to quad stroller.

The Tribe+ Classic is a quad stroller that can easily be adjusted to a double stroller. You can also turn it into a triple stroller with a seat add-on adjustment.

The Next Best Non-Toxic Strollers

Nuna’s entire line of strollers is REACH regulated . Nuna also leads the way with their non-toxic flame retardant free car seats .

According to Nuna, their line of gear:

• Consists of best in class materials
• Made in an eco-friendly and ISO 14001-certified factory
• They strive to eliminate the use of potentially harmful substances in all of their products. 
• Follows the European REACH Standard, the European EN71 Standard, and the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) to ensure the highest quality and safety in our products. These standards were implemented to improve product quality, product safety and are very specific in regard to absence and limitations of potentially harmful substances in products. 
• They do not use flame retardants in their strollers and heavy metal testing is part of CPSC testing, which they pass.

Some of Nuna’s stroller do contain leatherette on the handlebars. They have plenty of options without though!

Overall, Nuna seems to be ahead of the pack when it comes to chemicals of concern.

However, they would not respond to my questions on their use of DWRs within their stroller line after multiple emails requesting this information. Since I am unsure what Nuna uses for DWR, and can not be sure it is PFA-free, they are on my next best list.

Greentom are one of the most eco-friendly stroller companies as their stroller frames are entirely made of recycled plastic. All materials in the design can be reused or recycled with ease.

However, they don’t explicitly state that their strollers are free from flame retardants, and they didn’t respond to this question in my several attempts via email.

Their Carrycot mattress is made of GOTS certified organic cotton, wool and flax, while other components are made of recycled synthetic materials.

Greentom strollers are:

• Free of phthalates, PVC, and BPA on all components
• The fabric is made from recycled drinking bottles
• According to Greentom, they are non-toxic

Currently, Greentom is only available in Europe.

Britax and BOB strollers

Britax, who also own BOB , make strollers that adhere to:

• ASTM F833 – 19 (Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Carriages and Strollers)
• 16CFR 1225 – Part 1227 (CPSC Safety Standards for Carriages and Strollers)

The BOB stroller is one of the most popular jogging strollers for good reason. They are easy to use while running and provide good support for your child.

The materials used in the strollers vary between models, but a spokesperson said the company hasn’t applied for OEKO-Tex certification for any of their strollers. They also said that “Britax requires its Britax & BOB Gear suppliers to eliminate certain chemical flame retardants containing bromine, chlorine or other halogens, in components used in car seats and all other products. Strollers do not have flammability standards. Therefore, Britax and BOB strollers are not treated with any chemical flame retardants.”

They declined to provide further information on the presence of polyurethane foam, PVC, phthalates, BPA, DWR, and so forth.

They are being recommended since they do not use flame retardants. However, the undisclosed DWR is concerning. I also called prior to posting, and they told me it’s proprietary.

The Best Non-Toxic Jogging Strollers

These brands are discussed above but the best options for non-toxic jogging strollers are:

Bumbleride Speed Jogging Stroller

If you want the most non-toxic jogging stroller you can get then the Bumbleride Speed Jogging Stroller is your choice! It is free of harmful toxins, Oeko-Tex certified, and you can get an organic cotton stroller seat cover that is washable! At this time, it is only available as a single stroller.

Bumbleride is free of flame retardants and uses a plant-based oil for waterproofing. You can read more about Bumbleride above under The Best Non-Toxic Strollers section.

The BOB is what many runners use and love (and you can re-sell these pretty easily). They offer single and double joggers.

BOB is flame-retardant free, but there was no response on the waterproofing used after several emails. I followed up by calling them and they told me the waterproofing was proprietary and they will not release what they use.

Due to not knowing if the waterproofing is PFA-free or not, BOB is recommended as the second-best non-toxic jogging stroller.

The Best Non-Toxic Bike Strollers / Trailers

These options may not be fully non-toxic, you will need to weigh out the pros and cons of each.

If you’re looking for a stroller or trailer to use with your bike, Thule is a good option. Their strollers are made in Europe, the US, and Brazil, aiming to use 100% renewable energy in their factories by the end of last year (2020).

Thule bike trailers convert to strollers and are great to use. It’s the perfect stroller for biking and you easily can pop down the stroller wheels if you need a stroller at your destination.

Thule stated in an email that they are free from any carcinogen or toxic materials, and they are members of Bluesign®, which aims to eliminate harmful substances from textile production.

Per emails from Thule, there are no flame retardants in the Urban Glide 2 strollers. Thule didn’t offer comment on whether other strollers in their range use are flame retardant free or not after several email attempts. Or whether any of the strollers are free from polyurethane foam, phthalates, PVC, DWR, or other things to avoid.

Thule did not respond to my two emails requesting confirmation on flame retardants or DWRs. I did follow up with a phone call and they stated on the phone their entire line of strollers are flame retardants free but I did not get this information in writing.

Burley strollers are made with water-resistant 600D polyester covers and seat fabric and adhere to REACH regulations governing third-party testing and compliance with chemical restrictions on phthalates, lead, and many other concerns.

Burley did not confirm the absence of flame retardants in their strollers.

They responded to my email by stating that they were busy with the holidays and were declining to comment. I followed up twice after the holidays with no response.

Stroller Companies With Lacking Information (Not Recommended)

Bugaboo makes their strollers in their own factory in China and their Bugaboo Ant stroller won the Baby Innovation Green Award 2020 as 80% of it can be recycled at end of life. The outer lining of the dark navy Classic Collection is made from 50% recycled PET bottles, as are the premium melange fabrics for the Bugaboo Ant.

The Bugaboo Fox Complete stroller is TuV Sud / GS mark certified which uses the chemical testing in line with the Oeko-Tex 100 guidelines.

Interestingly, Bugaboo obviously conducts their own regular in-house chemical testing as they found a potential issue with lead contamination in the label of a wool seat liner and blanket themselves and issued a recall. No other recalls or safety concerns have been associated with the company though.

Bugaboo did not respond to several emails regarding their use of flame retardants, DWRs, PVC, BPA, etc. For this reason, they are not being included as a recommended non-toxic stroller as there is no information about their use of flame retardants (Oeko-Tex allows the use of some flame retardants) and DWRs at a minimum.

I would love to include Bugaboo as they seem like they are doing some great things; however, flame retardants and PFAs are an automatic no in my book and there is no information available to me to determine if they use these chemicals or not.

MaxiCosi (Dorel Juvenile Group, DJG)

MaxiCosi strollers are arguably a bit better than most standard strollers as the company has banned the use of some toxic chemicals, such as some brominated and ‘tris’ compounds including pentaBDE, octaBDE, decaBDE, TCEP, TDBPP, TDCPP, and TCPP. That said, they did not explicitly state in our email correspondence that their strollers are free from flame retardants, suggesting that some other chemicals may still be used in place of those chemicals just listed.

The fabric on MaxiCosi strollers is typically a cotton and polyester blend and handles are made of either a foam-like substance of textured ‘vegan leather’. The frames are either aluminum or plastic and the wheels are either plastic, foam-plastic, or rubber, depending on the model. The strollers are not made in the US, but the company wouldn’t state where they are made and wouldn’t offer any further information on the presence of phthalates, BPA, BPS, DWR, or other chemicals of concern.

Other Stroller Companies

I also looked into many other companies making strollers, scrutinizing their online materials, and contacting the companies. The following either did not respond to repeated requests for comment or had no meaningful information to share on the use of potentially toxic materials in their strollers, on top of not having any helpful information about the composition of their strollers available online.

I emailed each of these companies more than once and some three times with no response.

·         Chicco

·         Joovy

·         Stokke

·         Baby Trend

·         Maclaren

·         Mountain Buggy

If any of these manufacturers are interested in providing more concrete details about their materials and processes, certifications, in-house testing, and such, I would love to hear about it!

Even better, make these things easily available for everyone by being far more transparent online.

Final Thoughts on Non-Toxic Strollers

It’s such a shame that there’s so little information available from a majority of companies about one of the biggest purchases a parent makes. And it’s only by contacting manufacturers over and over again that we can start pushing them to be more transparent.

Bugaboo was the most transparent and responsive company followed by Zoe.

Whichever stroller you choose, be sure to register it with the manufacturer. This means they can contact you right away if there’s a safety issue or recall.

It is hard to find one demonstrating our commitment to the highest degree of quality and safety and we have strict chemical requirement agreements with our suppliers. We do not use hazardous materials in the formulation of our products and our strollers are not treated with any chemical flame retardants.

Regarding the strollers that you specified as the ones we should avoid. You mentioned the UPPAbaby. I reviewed their web site and found that they declare the following:

“UPPAbaby publishes and abides by internal chemical policies created for well-known chemicals of high concern, like those published under Washington State, REACH, and proposition 65.”

Hi, thank you! I think all of those things are good things regarding UPPA but it doesn’t mean they are free of the toxins I discuss. I do wish UPPA would have been willing to respond to my emails.

Wait: Strollers are Toxic?!

When it comes to toxicity, strollers are a mixed bag. No law requires strollers to meet flammability regulations (which apply to car seats and crib mattresses ), but that doesn’t mean you won’t find these toxic chemicals inside your child’s stroller.

In fact, many popular stroller brands contain harmful chemicals that are unsafe for human health, including perfluorinated chemicals , BPA, PVC , or phthalates in the seat material and other contact points such as handles, harness straps, and padding.

But even as a non-toxic blogger, I need to be honest with you: the truth is that it’s hard to avoid these things 100% when buying a stroller. There is no truly non-toxic or organic stroller on the market. In fact, most strollers still contain polyester, nylon, and polyurethane foam. 

And then you also have stroller manufacturers who won’t even disclose the materials they use or answer questions about their products. That leaves parents like us totally in the dark about what chemicals are used in their baby gear.

Not acceptable.

While we aren’t aiming for perfection, our goal is still to reduce your child’s exposure to these harmful substances. We’ll do that by choosing one of these consciously manufactured strollers.

When it comes to choosing a safer, healthier stroller, it’s important to avoid major chemicals of concern. We’ll do this by choosing a stroller brand that minimizes or does not use these materials or chemicals. Here’s what to look out for when choosing a stroller:

• Flame-Retardants: Toxic flame retardant chemicals are often added to foam and fabrics to help prevent the spread of fires. However, they do more harm than good and have been linked to hormonal issues, thyroid problems, learning disabilities, and cancer.
• Bisphenol A (BPA): This chemical is often used in plastics and can be found in some baby bottles and sippy cups. It is a known endocrine disruptor, causing hormonal imbalances, obesity, and even cancer.
• Phthalates: These chemicals are often used to soften plastics and can typically be found in soft plastics. Phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption, birth defects, and fertility problems.
• PVC: Polyvinyl chloride is one of the most toxic types of plastic because it includes several harmful chemicals, including chlorine. You’ll frequently find PVC in the rain shield and handles on a stroller.
• Formaldehyde: This toxic chemical is used in some adhesives and fabrics. It can cause respiratory problems, headaches, and more.
• PFC/PFAS:  Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a group of man-made chemicals that are used on strollers in stain-resistant fabrics. PFCs and PFAS can build up in the body and have been linked to several health issues.
• Polyurethane Foam: This highly flammable type of foam is often used in cushions, car seats, and changing table pads. It can release harmful chemicals called VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the air. Polyurethane foam is still found in most strollers, so please note this cannot be fully avoided at this time.

We’ve rounded up the healthiest strollers on the market to help minimize your child’s exposure to these undesirable chemicals and materials.

A stroller is a big purchase, and it’s one of the few baby products that you’ll use daily, even into toddlerhood. The great news is that there are more and more manufacturers making less toxic strollers for our littles! So you have many more brands to choose from.

Below is a list of excellent stroller brands that you’ll want to consider; most of these are made by responsible manufacturers who have limited their use of harmful ingredients in making their strollers. Please note that at this time, there are no strollers that are 100% “non-toxic.”

1. Bumbleride Strollers

Bumbleride is a responsible stroller manufacturer, choosing only the best materials for their strollers and using methods to reduce their eco footprint. Their strollers are made in Taiwan with sustainable manufacturing in mind. Overall, Bumbleride makes wonderful non-toxic and eco-friendly strollers!

Bumbleride makes jogging strollers, but they are great for daily use as well. All of their strollers are free of flame retardants, PVC , phthalates, perfluorinated chemicals, and polyurethane foam. The fabrics used are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and are made from 100% recycled PET made from recycled post-consumer pet bottles. I’m so excited to add Mockingbird to our list of recommended strollers! 

Let’s talk details: Mockingbird strollers are made without the use of flame retardant chemicals and the strollers are tested for a number of other toxic substances. They do not contain phthalates, formaldehyde, BPA/BPS, perfluorinated chemicals, AZO dyes, vinyl, latex, or toxic levels of heavy metals.

In addition to being free of flame retardants, their ClearTex strollers are also Greenguard Gold certified . While this doesn’t indicate they are PFC-free, nor does that mean they are fully free from harmful chemicals, this is a huge step in the right direction for Chicco. 16. Lightweight Stroller Frames

A lightweight stroller frame can be used while your baby is in an infant car seat. While this is a no-frills version of a stroller, it definitely has its advantages if you need something lightweight and easy to travel with. 

Plus, the beauty of using a stroller frame is that you can choose your non-toxic car seat without worrying too much about toxic chemicals because your baby will only make direct contact with the car seat.

Depending on which car seat you buy, you can either use the manufacturer’s stroller frame or buy a universal car seat carrier. Otherwise, if your car seat doesn’t have a matching stroller frame, you could try the Baby Trend Snap N Go Universal Infant Car Seat Carrier . This is essentially a compact and lightweight version of a stroller, and I find that many moms use this in the early days. It should fit most infant car seats, including the Chicco, Maxi Cosi, Britax, and UPPAbaby seats.

The Maybe List: Brands That Didn’t Fully Make the Cut

The Bugaboo baby gear brand is known for its high-end strollers, and the quality really shows. Their strollers boast the smoothest ride on any stroller I’ve ever tried, and I love that they can be pushed one-handed (my youngest would inevitably always want to be held when I took him for walks!).

The company has a nice commitment to sustainability, but they aren’t as forthcoming as I’d like them to be about the materials used in their strollers. They’re on the Maybe List because Bugaboo has not responded to several of my attempts asking to clarify this further — over many years.

Two pros to Bugaboo: the stroller seats themselves are Oeko-Tex certified and they are machine washable. This makes it easy to clean the stroller seat and machine washing the fabric also helps reduce some of the toxic load. Love the Bugaboo fox!

Baby Jogger

The City Mini stroller is extremely popular for a good reason. It’s lightweight, portable, and can be folded down with one hand (meaning… you can fold the stroller while holding your baby!). It steers well and has a generous sun canopy, and the seat reclines to a near-flat position, making napping in the stroller a lot easier. In the past, Baby Jogger had confirmed that their strollers are made free of flame retardants, PVC, BPA, latex, Teflon, phthalates, AZO dyes, and Scotchguard but we have not been able to confirm this while updating the article.

Buying a Stroller: Everything You Need to Know

There’s a lot that goes into choosing a stroller. Knowing exactly what you are looking for will help narrow down your options when buying a non-toxic stroller. In this final section on our guide to the best strollers, we’re going to cover:

• The different kinds of strollers available.
• Important questions to ask yourself when choosing a stroller.
• Important things to consider when you are shopping for a stroller.
• Features to look for when buying a stroller.

What are the Different Kinds of Strollers?

Regardless of which brand of stroller you buy, it’s important to know which type of stroller would make the most sense for your family before you make such a large purchase.

There are four main types of strollers to choose from, and they all have different features and purposes. I’ve outlined these below and included some pros and cons of each type of stroller.

Note: I’m not differentiating between single and double strollers below because you’ll find these options across all four stroller types. For example, you can find full-sized strollers and jogging strollers with single or double seats. (See our product recommendations for these!)

Full-Sized Strollers

A full-sized stroller is a go-to stroller that folds down and typically has many convenience features. Full-sized strollers usually have spacious storage baskets, are compatible with infant car seats, and can be used from birth until age 5. 

Full-sized strollers are convertible and sturdy. When you think of a typical stroller, you probably envision a full-sized stroller. Some of these strollers can get quite heavy, so consider the size and weight when ordering your stroller.

Some examples include the UPPAbaby Vista or Nuna Mixx strollers.

Jogging Strollers

A sporty version of a full-sized stroller. Jogging strollers have larger wheels and are designed for jogging and use on different terrains. The front wheel can be locked into place or allowed to swivel for managing different types of terrain, and they usually also have handle breaks to help you stop or slow down on the go.

Jogging strollers have good suspension and are durable, but they can be wider than full-sized strollers and harder to fold down and travel with. Many are compatible with infant car seats. 

Families tend to fall into two camps with jogging strollers: they either use them all the time or not at all. Hopefully, you’ll get plenty of use out of yours if you decide to purchase one. If not, they resell well on online marketplaces. 

A jogging stroller can typically be used from 6 months to age 5. An example is the Bumbleride Speed Jogging Stroller .

Lightweight or Umbrella Strollers

Portable and lightweight, an umbrella stroller is a much simpler (and pared-down) version of a stroller that can be used for the toddler years. Think: a lightweight stroller with few bells and whistles. 

You’ll find cheap umbrella strollers in big box stores with no real features other than the ability to fold them down, as well as sophisticated umbrella strollers that come with a seat recline, storage basket, and cup holder. They can also range in price from a few dollars to several hundred dollars. An example is the UPPAbaby G-Luxe .

Stroller Frames

Another type of stroller is a stroller frame that simply attaches to an infant car seat. These basic car seat carriers offer no real features other than the ability to connect to your baby’s car seat, but they serve a purpose when your baby is young (0-6 months). An example is the Chicco KeyFit Caddy .

Here are a few additional tips and questions to ask yourself when choosing from this list of non-toxic strollers.

How will you use your stroller?

Will you mostly use it for walks and getting around in your neighborhood? Or are you planning to jog and walk trails? 

Do you have a large SUV with lots of space or are you living in a city apartment with minimal storage space? Is this stroller for travel use or everyday use? 

All of these factors must be considered as you choose the right type of stroller for you — a full-sized stroller, jogging stroller, stroller frame, or umbrella stroller. 

And while there’s certainly no right answer for everyone, I’ve found that most families will start with a full-sized stroller and later switch to an umbrella stroller once their little one gets a little bigger.

How old is your child? 

If you are buying an infant car seat for your baby (which can be used until age 1), you’ll either want to purchase a stroller frame or choose a compatible full-size stroller that attaches to your car seat. Snapping your baby’s car seat into their stroller is helpful, especially if your baby falls asleep in the car!

After your baby reaches six months of age, you might find it more convenient to start using a more lightweight stroller instead of your full-size stroller. That’s when an umbrella stroller will come in handy. Or maybe this is when you’ll decide to start using a jogging stroller.

Finally, if you’re buying a stroller for a toddler, you’re probably less interested in toting around a large stroller and are more interested in a lightweight stroller like an umbrella stroller.

Baby gear can be pricey, so your budget is definitely something to factor in when buying a stroller. Strollers have become quite expensive, some running in the hundreds of dollars. Keep your budget in mind and consider whether you can splurge on a stroller or if your budget is tighter and you may need to de-prioritize the stroller below more important things like the organic crib mattress and non-toxic car seat .

Look for These Important Features

When it comes to buying a stroller, safety is always the number one priority. But what exactly makes a stroller safe? First, it’s made well and is age-appropriate for your child. For example, you shouldn’t use a jogging stroller until after the age of 6 months (unless it’s compatible with your baby’s infant car seat). 

Second, it’s made with better materials that are healthier for your child. All of the non-toxic strollers on this list are verified to be made with safer materials and were consciously manufactured to avoid some of the harshest chemicals typically found in toxic baby gear.

Think about the features that are important to you. Do you need one seat or two? Lots of storage space or a lightweight stroller for everyday use? How about a one-handed fold to make it easy to fold down the stroller? 

Knowing which convenience features you want will help you narrow down your choices when buying a stroller. I found these features extra helpful when buying a non-toxic stroller for my first baby:

• Newborn-friendly stroller
• Parent-facing seat option
• Folds down easily or with one hand
• Stands upright when folded down
• Maneuvers well around corners
• Is compatible with my child’s infant car seat

I was trying to decide between Bugaboo and UPPAbaby and ultimately chose the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller. I wanted a stroller with a one-hand fold such as Britax or City Mini, but I ended up going with the Cruz and loved it.

Here are some additional features to look for in a non-toxic stroller: 

Car Seat Compatibility: If you’re using an infant car seat, make sure that your stroller is compatible with your stroller. That allows you to attach the car seat to the stroller when needed. And this is extra helpful when your baby falls asleep in the car. Some strollers will have adapters for different car seat brands while others may only be limited to the specific brand’s car seats. If you are on the hunt for a non-toxic stroller for your baby, but you haven’t yet chosen your car seat, you might want to start by narrowing down the list of car seats first. You can look at this list of non-toxic car seats that contain no flame retardants to help you get started.

Stroller Safety Features: Look for a well-made and sturdy stroller with a five-point harness. Make sure it is age-appropriate and sturdy. Watch out for pinched fingers (yours or baby’s) when folding any stroller.

Parent-Facing Seat: A parent-facing seat allows you to turn your baby rear-facing in the stroller so that they are facing you. I find this so delightfully useful in the earlier months when your baby just wants to see mom. Later, when your baby is ready to explore the world, you can face the seat forward. Until then, the parent-facing option is great for babies and young toddlers.

Storage Basket: Storage baskets will range in size from tiny to spacious, and it’s smart to consider how important this feature is to you. Ask yourself how you’ll be using the stroller. If you’ll go shopping at the mall or grocery store, or if you plan to take long walks (or simply have a large diaper bag to tote around), a larger storage basket will be useful. 

Easy Fold-Down: Some strollers are easier to fold down than others. Consider how easy it is to fold down the stroller; for example, can it be folded down with only one hand? Does it stand upright when folded down? Depending on your child’s age, you may be able to put them in the car while you fold up your stroller or you may need to be able to fold the stroller down while holding your baby.

Sun Canopy: Some strollers have really generous sun canopies. A good sun canopy is an important part of practicing safe sun exposure for babies; be sure to choose a stroller with a large sun canopy for babies under 1 year of age. Another thing to look for is a peek-through window; I loved peaking through the canopy and viewing my littles through the little window. 

Wheels and Maneuverability: It might surprise you, but the wheels are very important in a stroller. A quality stroller with nice wheels can be pushed and take corners with only one hand; this is helpful if you’re buying a stroller for everyday use. And if you’re buying a jogging stroller, you’ll want to ensure the wheels are durable enough for different types of terrain and ensure they can take corners well.

Washable Fabric: For so many reasons, it’s great to have a stroller that has a removable and washable fabric. This comes in handy not only to wash away some of the chemical residues that might be on your stroller but it’s also helpful in case your little one has a leaky diaper, gets sick in the stroller, or eats a messy snack. 

Expansion Options: If you have more than one little one (or plan to expand your family soon), you might want to choose a stroller that can accommodate your growing family. Depending on the ages of your children, you can buy a double or triple stroller or simply add seats and rumble boards onto your stroller to expand it for your second child (or even multiple children).

Accessories: What kind of accessories are you looking for when you use your baby’s stroller? Would you like to use a bassinet attachment with your stroller? Some strollers can convert into bassinet strollers. Some strollers have compatible accessories (made by the same stroller manufacturer) such as snack trays, travel cases, rumble boards, rain covers, sibling seats, or cupholders.

Keep all of these things in mind as you shop from this list of non-toxic strollers.

There are no perfectly non-toxic or organic strollers made only with organic and natural fabrics. But there are safer strollers that are made in a more sustainable or eco-friendly (and baby-friendly) way. Babywearing with a non-toxic  baby carrier  is a good alternative to using a stroller, but I don’t think it’s a true substitute. At the very least, you can know that by choosing a non-toxic stroller from this list you are making a healthier choice for yourself and your little one.

Hi, I am curious about Bubleride and other strollers made from PET plastic. To my knowledge this plastic can leach antimony at high heat (approx. 185F+)…is this not a concern for this stroller to be sitting in a car throughout the summer and the PET material is directly against baby’s skin?

Hi Amber, it looks like an ok option but for the price I’d rather go with Uppababy. They don’t use any petroleum based chemicals or flame retardants but they do use some PVC (though it does not contain phthalates). The fabric is polyester and their bassinet is made from bamboo (which is great).

Hi! Those are great choices. There are NO flame retardant chemicals in the Uppababy Mesa Henry car seat. None in the bassinet or in their strollers either. Can’t go wrong with these! Only bit of advice I’d offer is to reconsider the stroller bassinet. The Cruz stroller can be used from birth with their infant insert. I bought the bassinet and hardly used it and I’ve heard the same from other parents. (But if you do decide on it, I have to say the bassinet on a stroller is just so cute.) ????

That’s great that there are no flame-retardants in the bassinet or stroller, but what about other chemicals? Did they say anything about VOCs, do their products pass any third-party VOC testing (e.g. Greenguard, or Oeko-tex)? I read that you wrote that UppaBaby doesn’t use BPA, Scotchguard etc in their products, which is great, but I would love to hear that it goes farther than that (there are soo many chemicals, without an overall test like Greenguard or Oeko-tex, they can just list what they don’t include, but there could still be other toxic chemicals off-gassing (especially in the foam (stroller insert, bassinet, car seat). Did they send you that list, or is is somewhere on their website?

Just wanted to post a little update for anyone who ends up here wondering the same things as I was…I ended up asking UPPAbaby about the foam and they replied and unfortunately it is polyurethane foam -the same thing we avoid in crib mattresses. I personally find that it’s not as bad as using it in crib because the stroller is used outside and with all the fresh air I don’t think the off gassing is a huge issue for the stroller, but for the bassinet, especially if used inside, I do think it’s worth thinking about for anyone looking for non-toxic products for their baby. The baby is very much surrounded by the foam (it’s on the bottom, all around and on top), so especially inside, any off gassing will certainly be in the air the baby breathes. The only truly non-toxic stroller I found in the end was the Bumbleride, but personally I found it so cumbersome and unwieldy when folded that I had to eliminate it for that reason. I hope that by more of us asking these questions, there will be more truly non-toxic options out there. I think it’s important to be aware of green-washing…a lot of companies do it. They list what they don’t have in a product and it makes it sound perfect, but quite often there are other things we’d like to avoid that are simply not mentioned – polyurethane foam in some of these strollers is a case in point.

Nuna strollers do not contain flame retardants. Only their car seats do (with the exception of the Pipa Lite). The Leaf curv is Oeko-Tex certified. Aside from commenting on FRs, Nuna wasn’t very specific with me about other toxic substances other than saying this: “To ensure the highest quality and safety in our products, we follow the European REACH Standard, the European EN71 Standard, and the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). These standards were implemented to improve product quality, product safety and are very specific in regards to absence and limitations of potentially harmful substances in products like Lead, Cadmium, Phthalates, Formaldehyde and other potentially harmful substances.”

Choosing the best nontoxic stroller for your needs may feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Below, I’ll explain what you need to look for (and what to avoid) when stroller shopping and highlight six stellar options for safe strollers that fit a variety of ages and usage styles.

Bugaboo strollers are designed to last you from the first days with a newborn to your third (or more!) toddler. They are constructed from high-quality aluminum and plastic with machine washable polyester that is OEKO-Tex certified free of 100 different toxic chemicals, including flame retardants. Parents rave about how well this stroller holds up to heavy wear and the ease of packing it down to fit in compact cars. Many found the suspension worked well enough for use as a jogging stroller and that the ride was smooth enough to keep even fussy babies sleeping soundly. The most significant drawbacks for most users are cost and lack of adjustments for carrying multiple babies. 

Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Stroller

Highlights: A classic for a reason, the Baby Jogger City Mini works in almost any terrain as a versatile stroller for busy families. It also supports kids up to 65 pounds. Just note it’s not as feature-rich as other options on this list.

The City Mini stroller series from Baby Jogger is perpetually popular, and it’s an excellent option for parents who want it all without paying luxe prices for it. The GT2 Stroller is a three-wheel design that offers lots of maneuverability with a single-hand fold-up design so you can pack it with you. The “forever air” rubber tires require no maintenance and are paired with an all-wheel suspension system that keeps the ride smooth for little travelers. 

All materials within the stroller are entirely free of flame retardants, and it’s also made without PVC, latex, Teflon, phthalates, and other compounds. 

This stroller has one of the largest weight capacities on this list, as it safely supports kids up to 65 pounds. Other highlights? The stroller’s canopy offers UV 50+ protection for sensitive skin, and it includes an extra-large-storage basket at the bottom with easy access from the front or rear. 

Parents love the maneuverability and versatility of this stroller style. Many praise how easy it is to fold up and take everywhere—making it a true compromise between a traditional jogging stroller and stroll-around-town model. Many shared that this stroller quickly became the only one they used as it worked for everything from the grocery store to trails at the park. 

One downside is that it doesn’t offer a parent-facing option unless you add in a car seat. This might be stressful for babies around six to eight months old that are too big for the seat adapter but still want to see their parents on walks. 

Let’s start by looking at some of the worst compounds found in conventional strollers.   

Flame Retardants

Flame retardants are controversial. These chemicals are added to many baby products to prevent them from burning quickly if they catch fire. In a crisis, this could save your child’s life. However, hundreds of different compounds are used as retardants, and many are linked to serious health problems. For more on the potential health issues associated with flame retardants, see this page on the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Website.

In past years, strollers needed to pass 12-second flammability tests to reach the US market, which required the use of flame retardants. However, baby products like strollers, infant carriers, and nursing pillows became exempt from this standard in 2010, and other baby products followed in 2014. 

So, while it’s usually a wise choice to buy used whenever possible, you should avoid using strollers made before 2010. 

Note: This exemption doesn’t mean that these toxic compounds are prohibited in strollers, but rather that health-minded brands can now choose to exclude them. Watch out for misleading advertising that says stroller manufacturers “comply with flammability laws” because this may actually be a sign that the products contain these retardants. 

Durable water repellents (DWRs) are water-resistant coatings added to many of the textiles used in strollers. Most are attached with potentially harmful solvents, and they tend to wear off quickly, rendering them ineffective and increasing exposure for the little travelers. 

Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances make fabric water repellent, but they are classified as potentially hazardous to human health by the EPA. Plant-based waxes and other treatments are available and effective, so there’s no reason to choose strollers that contain them.  

As the world’s third most common synthetic plastic, polyvinyl chloride is common in strollers, especially the thinner fabric components like the rain cover. Unfortunately, exposure is linked to some health problems . Look for strollers from brands that explicitly state they are PVC-free and phthalate-free. 

Polyurethane Foam 

Virtually every stroller on the market today contains polyurethane foam, typically in the handle and wheels. It’s still not clear what danger this compound poses for children, though they have the potential to off-gas toxic fumes as they break down that are linked to skin irritation and other problems.  

Another risk is that many are made with flame retardants. Look for a “CertiPUR-US” certification, as it guarantees any foam in the stroller is free of them.

Hey, great article! I had never heard of bumbleride before and it seems like a really neat company. I was wondering, do you know if uppababy and/or nuna use DWR on their strollers? And if so, what types?

Uppa Baby make a big song and dance about being free of toxic chemicals, but they don’t actually reveal if they use DWRs, unfortunately (and aren’t responsive to emails requesting such info, sadly). It’s absolutely worth contacting them directly to ask yourself, and the more of us that do this the better!

The same goes for Nuna, to some extent. This company is also unresponsive to requests about DWR use, although their strollers do seem better for overall toxic chemical use.

Sadly uppababy told me they DO contain PFAs in all of their strollers (due to the DWR they use) except on the Noa fabric option.

Nuna sadly uses polyurethane foam 🙁

And Phil and Ted’s didn’t seem to actually know what their strollers contained. When I asked them about their strollers they replied “The DWR treatment for the product may contain PFAS”

BumbleRide seems like the cleanest BUT I really would love them to have a DWR free option 🙁 they have upgraded it to one that is supposed to be toxin free for all 2020-current models. But it’s one more unnecessary exposure (there can always be hidden toxins as well)

The best non-toxic strollers on the market in 2024

The sustainable and non-toxic baby industry is coming along in leaps and bounds. It would have once been impossible to find a non-toxic stroller but luckily we now have multiple options, not just with non-toxic materials but also sustainable and ethical options. 

When looking for a non-toxic stroller, the main things that we want to avoid are flame retardants, PVC, BPA, phthalates and PFAS chemicals (used to make fabric waterproof). In this list of non-toxic strollers, not all are free of every toxic component but all are flame retardant free. When researching, make sure you’re weighing up all the pros and cons for each stroller and your individual situation. 

We’ve decided to break the list down into brands. Some of them make all of their products non-toxic, while others have only some non-toxic products. When choosing companies to include, we make sure their information about their practices is easy to find, if it’s not, then they’re probably hiding something. Some other non-toxic strollers often make the list but we were unable to 100% guarantee that their products were non-toxic. Always do your own research!

Let’s dive into the world of non-toxic strollers!

The Best Non-Toxic Strollers

Bumbleride is our overall winner! We can’t recommend their products enough!

It is the most transparent company, the first impression on their site is that it cares about the environment, creating non-toxic products and making its products as sustainable as possible.

All of their products are flame retardant, PVC, BPA and phthalate-free. They only use PFAS-free fabrics for their water-durable fabrics and their rain cover is PVA-free. 

On top of that, Bumbleride is passionate about sustainability and the environment. They have been able to create products made with 25% recycled fishing nets and 100% rPET fabrics, meaning they’re creating fabrics from high-quality recycled plastic bottles. Pretty amazing right?

Foam padding within baby products is mostly created with potentially harmful products but Bumbleride uses untreated polyester batting, making it even more non-toxic. They also create 100% organic accessories with organic cotton, wool and flax. These products include a bassinet mattress cover, infant inserts and seat liner. 

Even though all of the Bumbleride products are made with the above materials, the  Era-Reversible Stroller also has a cork handle. Cork is sustainable, renewable, antimicrobial and durable. The Era comes with air-filled tires, all-wheel suspension and a reversible seat, making it suitable for the city and more uneven terrain. It is also suitable from day 1.

You know we’re passionate about supporting ethical companies and Bumbleride doesn’t disappoint! Their products are manufactured in a small family-owned factory in Taiwan. The factory has fair working conditions, fair pay and a 5-day working week (6 days is normal). Products are made in small batches, helping to maintain minimal waste. 

It’s easy to see why the Bumbleride Era is the overall winner for the best non-toxic stroller!

Greentom 

When you land on their website, you’re greeted with ‘Smart design for families with a green heart’. You know you’re in the right place when looking for non-toxic strollers!

They are on a mission to create smart, functional and sustainable products. In creating green products, they have a big focus on using recycled and non-toxic materials in their manufacturing. The Greentom Classic is made from 5.5kg of high-quality recycled PET bottles. After use, their products can be recycled. Their fabric and frame components are extensively tested for chemical substances, are non-toxic and comply with child safety regulations. Greentom products do not contain fire retardants, PVC, BPA, phthalates and parabens. 

When purchasing a non-toxic stroller for a newborn, you want to make sure that the mattress in the carrycot is non-toxic as well. Luckily the Greentom mattress is 100% organic and made with organic cotton, wool and flax. No chemicals are used in the farming of the sheep and when washing the wool before production begins. Wool is also a natural fire retardant, making it safe and without nasty flame retardant chemicals. 

Greentom has three options for purchase, the Classic Stoller, the Carrycot and the Reversible but you can also purchase all three as a set, the base remains the same, you just change the seat that you need. 

Greentom is our overall runner up and the only reason that it doesn’t win is that it’s only available in Europe. This does however make it a great option for those in the UK.

Uppbaby is a well known and trusted brand. They create amazing strollers and all of their products are flame retardant free. They also mention that they don’t use any ‘hazardous products’ but there’s no more information on what that exactly means. 

Their most popular non-toxic stroller is the VistaV2 . It’s great for a baby’s first stroller and comes with the carrycot as well. It’s super easy to change out seats and additional carrycots and seats are available for purchase, making it a great option for multiples or families with more than one child. 

Uppababy also runs a program called ‘Uppababy Gives Back’ which helps families in need by donating products. To date, they have donated over 2 million dollars. 

Chicco is committed to using innovative fabrics that don’t require the use of chemicals, without compromising on quality, comfort or sustainability. One of their innovative fabrics is ClearTex. It means flammability standards, without the use of flame retardant chemicals. Chicco is also Greenguard certified, meaning that materials used within their products are low in chemical emission.

Stain-resistant chemicals are often used on baby products, for obvious reasons but they are harmful chemicals. Chicco has come up with a solution where products come with covers that are easily removed and washed, reducing the need for harmful stain-resistant chemicals.

All products come with these great features but our pick is the full-size Bravo stroller.

Zoe Strollers

Zoe Strollers manufacture strollers that are made with naturally flame-resistant materials, meaning that no nasty chemicals are needed. They have also started to incorporate recycled fabrics with their new Terra range. 

On top of that, they are also very affordable!

The only downside that I can see is that they don’t manufacture an infant stroller. They only create strollers for babies that can sit more upright. Zoe Strollers do however manufacture triplet and quadruplet strollers, making them a great option for non-toxic large multiple strollers.

All Nuna car seats and strollers are flame retardant free and manufacture their products with materials that are naturally flame retardant. On top of that, they use organic cotton, GOTS-certified fabric and merino wool to make Tencel fabric. 

From an environmental point of view, Nuna abides by ISO 14000 standards , meaning they use alternate fuels such as solar, treatment of wastewater and recycling material such as plastic waste and packaging.

Nuna is also Greenguard Certified and eight of their products have met Greenguard Certification, meaning that their products don’t contribute hazardous material or VOCs into the air.

If you plan to travel even somewhat often with your little ones, you might want to invest in a travel stroller.

So, what is a travel stroller? A travel stroller is a smaller, more scaled-back stroller with a collapsible frame that can be folded up tightly. Many travel strollers fold multiple ways to reduce the length, width, and height; some, like umbrella strollers, fold one way into a narrow but still-long piece. We tested more than 32 travel strollers from top brands such as Uppababy, Nuna, and Babyzen. We measured and weighed them, then spent eight and a half hours in our New York City lab putting them all through the wringer, looking at each stroller's maneuverability, design features, durability, and portability. It folds up into an extremely compact, easy-to-carry package that is great for storing at home or on flights.

The seat can only be hand-washed and air-dried.

The Joolz Aer+ looks great, rolls smoothly, and features plenty of padding for the little rider sitting in it. It wow-ed us right out of the box and was one of the quickest strollers to assemble with just a quick-snap connection to a secure and stable stroller. While the Aer+ is about one pound lighter than earlier models, it is still the same size and features all of the perks parents look for in a high-quality stroller. The roomy shopping basket can hold up to 11 pounds, the canopy is adjustable, and the seat reclines to multiple settings to help keep your little one comfortable as they grow.

Throughout our tests, we tossed the stroller off of a counter to see how it held up and it remained in impeccable condition with little to no scratching and no major breaks or rips. Even when fully loaded up, the wheels moved smoothly and limited turbulence as they are designed to absorb shock from pebbles, rocks, and other rough terrain. We could easily collapse the stroller down using only one hand — which is perfect for use when flying — and it can once again be assembled with just the click of a button. Not only does it roll well, but the one-handed folding process was the smoothest of all the strollers we tested.

It's not especially small when folded and is a little unwieldy to carry.

During testing, when we pressed the buttons to collapse and fold the Nuna Trvl, it felt like some spring-loaded mechanism started the process for us and made it easier. That's the kind of helpful detail any parent or caretaker appreciates. And that folding process was quick, easy, and doable with one hand. The Trvl isn't quite as light as some of the other strollers, however, and it has no strap for carrying over the shoulder (although the bumper bar turns into a handle for carrying when the stroller is collapsed). It's also not clear whether the Nuna Trvl will fit in all airplane overhead compartments; It was a tight squeeze when we placed it in ours, with the wheels sticking out a bit.

The Trvl has a lot of great design features, including an adjustable leg rest and simple, adjustable reclining system for your baby. The strap clasp is magnetic to save a little time, and the canopy has a peekaboo window and good ventilation. The bottom storage basket is also on the larger side for a travel stroller and can comfortably fit a backpack. The stroller gilded beautifully over each surface we tried; there was no difference between rolling over the smooth hardwood and the shag carpet, and it handled gravel without issue. And it held up just fine in the durability test.

Best budget, kolcraft cloud plus stroller.

It comes with a tray for baby's food and drink but is still extremely lightweight and easy to fold.

There isn't a ton of space in the undercarriage for storage.

Strollers are unnervingly expensive; many new parents experience sticker shock when they first see those price tags. The Kolcraft Cloud Plus is not. And while it's not the prettiest of the bunch (there's some loud branding), it folds easily — it can even be done one-handed with a little effort and coordination. We love that unfolding can also be done one-handed.

The Cloud Plus doesn't fold down quite as small as most every other one we're testing; the shape is somewhere between an umbrella and normal travel stroller. It's very lightweight, which we love, but since it doesn't fold small enough to fit in an overhead bin and doesn't have a strap or handle, it's not as portable as other options.

This stroller is the only one we tested with a tray for the baby's food and drink; the tray is removable if you're looking to save space. There are also two small cup holders for the adults, though our travel mug did not fit in them. The storage basket can fit a small backpack. The recline system is pretty easy to use and goes back three-fourths of the way to horizontal, and the canopy is good but not great. Same goes for the seat padding.

It rolled well on smooth surfaces, though there was some resistance on the carpet and a lot more on the grave. But we were able to push it through, and the stroller is light enough that when the wheels aren't rolling you can still keep moving. It's not the smoothest ride, but passable. The tray came unclasped during the durability test, but there was no actual damage. Overall, the price-to-performance ratio of the Cloud Plus is so good that it's an excellent budget option.

Gb qbit+ all city stroller.

It reminds us of the very top-tier travel strollers, but its price is meaningfully lower.

The handlebar isn't adjustable and the stroller is a bit heavier than other options.

The GB Qbit+ All City reminded us of the Nuna Trvl, but at a significantly cheaper price. The only areas the stroller fell short of the Nuna model are the canopy, which is not especially nice or expansive, and the fact that it's slightly harder to carry since it's a little heavier and has no actual carrying strap. That said, there's plenty to love about the Qbit. One-handed folding is smooth, and buckling and unbuckling the straps is easy. The seat is nicely padded, the entire back is made of breathable mesh to keep your child from overheating. The leg rest is simple to maneuver and goes all the way flat. The seat also reclines almost all the way back so that your baby can take a comfortable snooze. The included bumper bar comes off and on easily, and the handlebar looks and feels nice. There's enough storage for a backpack, too. As for maneuverability, it rolled great on all our testing surfaces and made crisp, tight turns. If you want something similar to and almost as good as the Nuna Trvl, this is your travel stroller.

Uppababy minu v2 stroller.

It folds up far more compactly than other UPPAbaby models.

The canopy sticks out a bit when the stroller is folded.

The Minu has a lot of the features familiar to UPPAbaby devotees — unstructured rear storage pouch, locking clasp to keep the stroller folded, excellent canopy — but unlike the brand's G-Luxe and G-Link models, this one is not an umbrella stroller. We actually think that makes for a better travel stroller. The Minu folds up more easily than other UPPAbaby models and far more compactly than an umbrella model. The fold can be done with one hand, but keep in mind the canopy needs to be tucked in once it's folded. A padded carrying strap easily fits over the shoulder. When carried, the Minu isn't the lightest or smallest option on our list, but it's portable enough and fits fine in an overhead compartment.

The Minu's seat back reclines nicely and easily for naps, and the handlebar feels good on the palms. The canopy's magnetic mesh window is handy and easy to keep open, and the sun shade for keeping the brightness out of your baby's eyes is one of the best we saw in our tests. The seat's padding is ample, though we'd like it if the leg rest were adjustable. We did appreciate the sizable bottom storage basket.

In terms of maneuverability, the Minu performed fine. It didn't make quite as tight turns as the Joolz or Nuna, and it felt a bit heavier to push, but it handled the gravel really well. A canopy rod popped out of place when we pushed the stroller off the table, but we were able to fix it pretty easily. Overall, while the stroller is expensive, it's not the priciest on the list and is worth it for the well-crafted features.

It's very well-padded, folds up into a tidy package, and has a convenient carrying strap.

The clips and buckles can be hard to maneuver.

Folding the Babyzen Yoyo 2 took two hands and, while not difficult, was a little more involved a process than with some other strollers. Unfolding is pretty easy, except we noticed our feet getting caught in straps a few times. While folding and unfolding were slightly disappointing, we love how portable this stroller is. It folds up very small and has a comfortable padded shoulder strap as well as a metal bar for easy carrying. And it fits easily into an overhead storage bin. It's a great option for a stroller you plan to fly with.

The Yoyo 2 has nice features, too. The seat padding is especially cushy, and the seat reclines three-fourths of the way back to horizontal (though the recliner is a bit tricky to figure out). There's also a pocket in the back and a decent storage basket underneath that can fit a small bag. The canopy is good, though we'd prefer the peekaboo window to be mesh instead of plastic.

This stroller especially stands out for its handling. We were able to maneuver this stroller through the safety cones with such ease, we could really see this stroller being helpful at a crowded grocery store or airport.

It folds more easily and rolls more smoothly than we expected from a stroller this size.

It doesn't fold down very small, and unfolding it could be easier.

For such a large contraption, this double stroller folds with surprising ease. We were even able to do it one-handed with a little effort, which none of us expected. Unfolding is a little trickier, as it takes some force to unhook the locking clasp. As a double stroller, the G-Link 2 is not the most compact package when folded. Plus, it's an umbrella structure, so this one probably isn't fitting in many overhead bins. Carrying it was a little unwieldy, as should be expected with a double stroller, but there is a helpful handle, and the stroller is lighter than it looks. You can actually wheel it along when it's folded instead of carrying it, but it's not easy, and it bumped into us when we did so.

We like the canopies on the G-Link 2: quality material and good coverage. There are little storage pockets behind each seat, and it comes with a cup holder. You can also fit a purse or very small backpack in the undercarriage basket. The seats have generous padding, which extends to form a sort of calf rest for the riders. The straps buckle easily and have different height options; the seat backs have two recline positions and are super easy to adjust.

The stroller rolled well over all the surfaces, even the gravel, and it made much tighter turns than we anticipated. We also like that there are no wheels in the middle of the frame (as most double umbrella strollers have), which makes it easier to push without kicking the wheels or frame. Finally, it showed no damage after our durability tests.

The Cybex Libelle Stroller looks sleek and is easy to fold down into an easy-to-store size. Unfolding this stroller is incredibly easy — perfect for families on the go. The wheels of this stroller turn more easily than some other styles and provides a smooth ride over most surfaces.

If you like to live your life simply, the compact and convenient Contours Itsy may be the stroller for you. Right out of the box, it’s already nearly fully assembled — all you have to do is snap the bumper bar into place, which takes almost no effort. On top of that, it’s a no-frills option, so there’s no cup holder or oversized basket to weigh it down, take up space, or make things complicated. 

We did, however, love features like the secure bumper bar, easy-to-use harness, canopy with UV 50 sun protection, and padding on the crotch strap, which makes the stroller look comfortable. They also appreciated the small size of the foot rest, basket, and entire stroller in general, because it made using and transporting it a breeze.

When it was time to stow the stroller away (or pack it up for travel), we got a kick out of just how tiny it folds up — in its simplest form, it’s not much larger than a grocery bag. It’s also ultra-lightweight and easily folds with just one hand.

It did not fit in our overhead bin and isn't easy to fold one-handed.

Folding this stroller was pretty simple, though not quite as smooth as it was with some of the others. The unfolding process was a little finicky as well and took some practice. So what do we like about the Baby Jogger City Tour 2? The price is reasonable, it performed solidly on most of our tests, and it maneuvered exceptionally well over all surfaces. We noticed little perceptible difference between its rolling over the shag carpet and smooth wood surface, and while other strollers struggled a bit on the gravel, this one navigated it with ease.

In terms of portability, the City Tour 2 doesn't feel bulky and has a good hand carrying handle. We would have liked to see a shoulder strap, however, and it did not fit in our overhead bin. The seat back has a lot of recline, and the drawstring to pull and push the seat forward and back is easy to use. The seat has good structure and good padding; the straps work well and can be adjusted to different height levels. There's lots of leg room and adjustable calf support for the baby, and the canopy has a peekaboo window and goes up and down smoothly. We'd have appreciated some more storage space; you can't fit a backpack anywhere. When we pushed the City Tour 2 off a table, we did notice that a small foam pad came off, though we couldn't even figure out where it came from, and it did not structurally damage the stroller.

The recline system is particularly easy to use, and the stroller stands well on its own when folded.

The button/ring-pull combination for folding it is a bit finicky and has to be timed perfectly.

The first thing to note here is that ​​umbrella strollers only fold one-dimensionally, so the result is narrow but long…like an umbrella. The other strollers on this list fold down via multiple joints and in multiple directions for a smaller and more squarish package; neither is necessarily better, but you'll want to decide what you want before buying a travel stroller.

This particular UPPAbaby model is a bit tricky to fold because the handle/ring combination used to do so is finicky and has to be timed perfectly. Once you get that, the folding is smooth, but the whole button-and-ring thing is a little annoying. As with most UPPAbaby products, however, the G-Luxe's features are pretty nice. There's an included cup holder that fits a travel mug easily, and the canopy is expansive with extra sun shade (there is no peekaboo window, however). The leg rest for the child is easy to adjust, and the straps feature a five-point harness and adjustable height levels. The seat padding is substantial without looking bulky, and the recline system, while only providing two settings, is exceptionally easy to use. The unstructured (perhaps too unstructured) pocket behind the seat is pretty spacious and in a good location, but the storage basket at the bottom of the stroller isn't particularly big.

The G-Luxe maneuvers well, with good tight turns, though it rattled noticeably over the gravel. It held up well during our durability tests and sustained no damage.

It's incredibly easy to assemble and takes just a few minutes to click the wheels and bumper bar into place. We did note that the cargo area is the perfect size for a small tote bag or purse, but it may not be large enough to fit diaper bags or weekender bags.

We love that this stroller comes with a removable seat liner that can be thrown in the washing machine after a trip to keep clean and fresh. The canopy can also be unzipped to expand and it has a peek-a-boo feature on top so you can check on your child without stopping. This stroller is also easy to push around on every type of terrain — especially around tight corners. The stroller is light enough to lift up stairs, but we do recommend you use two hands when carrying down the stairs. When it's time to disassemble the stroller, simply press a button on the handlebar and bend the stroller forward. It’s so easy we didn’t even need instructions to figure out how to do it. You can even fold and unfold this one-handed, perfect for on-the-go travels.

For such a compact stroller, the Thule Shine has plenty of storage, an expandable canopy with UPF 50+ protection, a reclining seat, and adjustable leg rests — everything you need for a busy parent and growing youngster to travel comfortably. We love the fast assembly of this stroller and the security of knowing everything clicks together when positioned and popped in correctly. There is an adjustable handlebar that is super easy to figure out, an extra rain canopy that you can pack and bring with you, and it is so easy to fold down. The harness does need to be clipped in a specific order before it can be fully buckled, which might become difficult with a fussy child, but we did find the seat to be comfortable and loved that it was extremely adjustable.

During our tests, it only suffered minimal scuffing and we never felt as though it would tip or fall while maneuvering through an obstacle course. We were able to fold the stroller with just one hand, but it was difficult to get it fully locked into the travel position without using two hands. It does stand upright once folded, so you can pop it down quickly for storage, whether you're coming back home and stashing it in a closet or boarding a plane. The stroller also fits easily into car trunks, but is most suitable for gate checking and is not likely to fit in overhead airplane bins. Overall, the stroller felt durable and was light enough that most parents would be able to carry it when needed. We felt like it would last through at least a couple of kids should your family use it multiple times, which is perfect for growing families.

Other Travel Strollers We Liked

Some of the travel strollers we tested did not make our list of recommendations. They all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Summer Infant 3DLite : This is a decent budget option, but the price-to-performance ratio was just not quite as good as the Kolcraft Cloud Plus.

Doona Infant Car Seat and Latch Base : The easy-to-maneuver pick collapses into a car seat but the use case for this is too specific to pay as much as it costs, and many other stroller frames can fit a car seat.

Gb Pockit Air All Terrain : This one is incredibly light and folds easily, but there are basically zero features.

Ergobaby Metro+ Compact Stroller : While this is a sleek and stylish option, i t's not easy to carry, and the canopy adjustment makes a lot of noise, which could wake up a sleeping baby.

Munchkin Sparrow : The lightweight design is smart and thoughtful, but everything from the canopy to the storage bin is simply too small. 

Travel + Leisure / Conor Ralph

Once we fully assembled all strollers in our New York City testing lab, we measured their height, length, and width, both fully opened and fully folded down. We also weighed each one, since weight is a particularly important aspect if anyone will be carrying the stroller during a trip. Then after carefully reading instructions, we repeatedly folded and unfolded each stroller. We took copious notes to record whether the folding process was intuitive and easy to execute. We considered how difficult it would be to do with a baby in one arm or with a whiny toddler pulling at our legs.

While each stroller was in its most compact setup, we tested it for portability. Is it easy to pick up? Comfortable to carry? Are there good handles and straps? Is it compact enough to fit in an airplane overhead bin (we constructed our own makeshift one according to standard airline measurements using a storage rack and a box). We recorded all this and more.

Next we carefully examined each stroller for included features. We looked for seat reclining and cushioning, cup holders, baskets and other storage space, canopy cover for protection from the weather, seat cushioning and reclining, and more. We tried the features out and took detailed notes on whether they were functional and helpful. We also practiced buckling and unbuckling the straps.

Then we put 25-pound sandbags in every stroller. We wheeled them forward and backward over hard floor, carpet, and gravel. We practiced U-turns and pivots and even wheeled them through a miniature obstacle course of cones. We also noted how well the brakes worked and if they were easy to engage.

Finally, we gave all of the strollers a durability test. We dropped each one from waist height and then pushed each off of a table slightly higher than that. We examined each after the falls to see if there was any damage.

After completing our lab tests, we sent each stroller out to real families to use these strollers over a period of six months to really put them to the test. Throughout the testing period, we asked how each stroller was holding up in terms of durability, comfort, portability, and more and updated our findings here.

Tips for Buying a Travel Stroller

Consider the types of travel strollers.

Not all travel strollers are designed with the same priorities in mind. Some may emphasize a lightweight and packable style while others are focused on maneuverability or durability. There are umbrella strollers, that are best for toddlers, but light enough for travel; jogging strollers with advanced suspension for smooth rides; and even full-sized strollers that may not seem best for air travel, but often include great features like storage compartments and padded seats when portability is less of an issue. When it comes to selecting the best travel stroller for your family, think about portability and convenience, but don't forget about comfort and bonus accessories to make your trip a smooth and unforgettable experience.

Pay attention to folded size

The biggest differentiator between a regular stroller and a travel stroller is that a travel stroller should pack up more compactly. You'll want it to fit easily into car trunks or train/airplane compartments without taking up much space. The Joolz Aer , our top pick, folds down to 8.5 (height) x 21 (length) x 17.75 (width) inches. That's a good guide for a stroller that will fit nicely into the aforementioned compartments.

Remember storage space and other features

Just because your travel stroller might be a smaller and more scaled-down version of your everyday stroller, you shouldn't have to suffer from a lack of convenience. Good travel strollers still offer some storage space for small bags, toys, snacks, etc. Remember, you can always add a drink caddy for both your stroller and luggage. The seat for your baby should be padded and comfortable and able to recline; keep an eye out for a canopy that offers good coverage and buckles and straps that are easy to use. So, while compact folding and good portability are what make a travel stroller a travel stroller, be sure to look closely at the other features a stroller does (or does not) include.

Prioritize comfort and safety

At the end of the day, your stroller needs to be safe and comfortable for your child. Check for good, padded seats that recline. Make sure the straps don't look like they'd cut into your baby's shoulder or chest, and take note if there are leg rests. Note if the wheels can handle different surfaces well enough to keep the stroller from shaking and rattling too much.

If you can fit it in the overhead, you can bring it on board. If you have an umbrella model or are using your regular (non-travel) stroller, your best bet is to gate check it. But many travel strollers fold down so compactly that they fit easily into an overhead bin. In general, carry-on luggage should be 45 linear inches (22 x 14 x 9 inches) or less. You can reference the FAA website for more guidance.

In short, a travel stroller is lighter than an everyday stroller and folds down far smaller. This means that the frames are usually thinner and have several folding joints, and the wheels will be smaller and less suited for rough terrain. Storage space, cup holders, and other accessories will usually be kept to a minimum. But a good travel stroller should give you everything you really need and even function well enough to be used every day — all while folding down nice and small and being easy to carry or pack away.

The seat and Canopy of the stroller are made from polyester coated with polyurethane for waterproofing. Zoe strollers are JPMA certified and meet ASTM safety standards. The strollers are made in China.

Zoe offers a variety of models, from single to quads, depending on your need. Let’s look at some of the models of the Zoe umbrella stroller.

The Tour+ umbrella stroller is everyday use, lightweight stroller that can fit in a backpack. It can be easily folded with a single hand and is super compact in a folding state.

Is Mockingbird stroller Non-Toxic?

Mockingbird strollers are luxury strollers comparable to UppaBaby Vista in features at much lower price points.

The Mockingbird products abide by the standard set by Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ASTM International, ASTM F833-15, and their products are JPMA certified.

They also send their fabric and other materials for harmful substance testing. And Mockingbird has confirmed by email that their strollers DO NOT CONTAIN lead, heavy metals, BPA, flame retardants, phthalate, formaldehyde, PFAs (Including Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) & Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)), AZO dyes, vinyl, Chlorine, latex, Scotchguard, and Teflon.

However, they did not provide proof of their third-party lab test results, which makes me suspicious about their quality.

And their strollers are made in China, I would have been more confident in using Mockingbird stroller if their manufacturing plant was based in North America.

In email communication, they have disclosed the following information.

• Strollers – Made in China
• Strollers frame- Aluminium
• Wheels – polyurethane
• Handlebar and Bumper – leatherette (fake leather made of vinyl or plastic)
• Seats – Polyurethane foam and nylon
• Canopy – Polyester with spandex water-resistant fabric

Overall, Mockingbird manufacturers have made a considerable effort to make their strollers chemical-free but looking at how affordable their strollers are compared to other non-toxic strollers in this list, I still have my doubt for considering Mockingbird stroller as a non-toxic.

What are the Chemicals to Avoid in a Non-Toxic Stroller?

Toxic chemicals find their way into strollers via the materials used in making strollers. To tell you the truth, it is tough to find a non-toxic stroller that is truly non-toxic.

Here are the main toxic chemicals that you need to avoid in a non-toxic stroller.

Flame Retardant

Flame Retardant chemicals are added to the materials of the stroller to stop the fire from starting or spreading.

Flame retardant chemicals such as brominated or chlorinated flame retardants are very harmful. They are linked to causing cancer, damaging developing brain cells, and disrupting the hormone level in our body. They are more toxic to babies because of their still-developing system.

These toxic Flame Retardants are present in the baby products form of PentaBDE/ Firemater 550, TDCPP, TCPP, and TCEP. However, since 2014 most baby products, including strollers, are exempted from using toxic flame retardants , but these chemicals still find their way into baby products through overseas suppliers.

Polyurethane Foam

Polyurethane foam is made of petroleum-based material and is known to emit volatile organic compounds that can cause skin and lung irritation and even cause cancer.

Polyurethane foam is present in many baby products, including a stroller. It is found in a stroller seat and used in filling a stroller tire.

Although baby products are exempted from flammability requirements since 2014, many manufacturers still treat polyurethane foam with flame retardant chemicals because of its high flammability.

So, it is best to avoid a stroller that contains polyurethane foam. But it is tough to find a stroller that is polyurethane foam-free.

The best you can do is look for a stroller that has polyurethane foam but is not treated with flame retardant to reduce your baby’s risk of toxic chemical exposure. Or look for strollers with foam-free seats. Polyurethane foam in stroller wheels and handles poses less risk than foam in a stroller seat.

This list has included two stroller brands that do not use polyurethane foam in their stroller.

Fabric-like polyester is used to make baby products like a car seat, bouncer, play yards, and strollers because of its durability and water-resistant properties.

Polyester fabric is a synthetic fabric often treated with flame-retardant and goes through a chemical process containing toxic chemicals like phthalates, heavy metals, formaldehyde, etc.

It is hard to find a stroller that does not contain polyester fabric. But one way to make sure the stroller is safe for a baby is to ensure stroller fabric is made of recycled plastic or has Oeko-Tex Standard 100 or EcoInstitut certification. These certifications ensure that the fabric is free of 100 different toxic chemicals.

To make textile used in stroller water-resistant, Durable Water Repellents (DWRs) coating are added.  These DWRs are often wearing off quickly and render them ineffective. But the exposure of DWRs to a little one is a health hazard.

PFAs are used to make the fabric of the stroller water repellent. But PFAs are recognized as hazardous to human health by the US Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA There are stroller brands available in the market that uses plant-based waxes or safer alternatives than PFAs.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a synthetic plastic commonly used in the making of the stroller. PVC is used in making thin fabric such as rain covers and storage mesh. Besides, to make PVC flexible, phthalate is often added.

And both PVC and phthalate are linked to a birth defect, endocrine disruption, and even causing cancer. So, choose the brand that is PVC and Phthalate-free.

What features to look for in a Non-Toxic Stroller?

In addition to knowing which chemicals to avoid in a non-toxic stroller and different types of strollers available in the market, here are some additional features to consider depending upon your need.

Weight and Size

Weight and size are important to consider when making a buying decision. Except for the umbrella stroller, the full-size and jogger strollers are heavy and bulky.

With some strength, most of the full-size strollers can be quickly loaded in and out of a car truck.

However, if you are looking for a lightweight stroller, you can only get an umbrella stroller. But keep in mind that umbrella strollers are not compatible with infant car seats given that they are lightweight, and they shouldn’t be used for babies under one.

Storage capacity

Consider the storage capacity of the stroller before you invest in it. I prefer a stroller with a large storage capacity, so you have space to put diaper bags when you are out or and about. Also, I like space to hold my coffee cup when I am pushing a stroller.

Car seat Compatibility

If you have an infant car seat, you need to make sure that the stroller accommodates the infant car seat you owned. Not all stroller brands are compatible with other brands’ car seats.

It is particularly important when your baby falls asleep in the car. You can just put the car seat on the stroller without disturbing your baby’s sleep and carry on with your shopping or whatever you are doing.

  Seats

The number of seats available in the stroller is also essential when you have two kids. For twins, you need double strollers, and for two kids of different ages, you need two seats in the stroller.

If you plan to have another kid pretty soon, you need to plan well and purchase a stroller with two seats.

Folding Convenience

Folding convenience is something you should consider before buying a stroller. Some brands of strollers have an easy, one-hand folding system on the handle. One-hand folding makes life so much easy when you are carrying a baby in one hand.

Budget is an essential factor considering how expensive a non-toxic stroller can be. Keep your budget in mind because some non-toxic strollers can cost you a couple of hundred dollars.

If you find a non-toxic stroller too expensive, you need to consider investing your money into something like a non-toxic crib and mattress or play mat rather than a non-toxic stroller.

Flame Retardant Free Non-Toxic Strollers – Conclusion

The stroller is the biggest investment that you will make for your baby, and I hope this list of flame-retardant-free, non-toxic strollers has helped you make a buying decision.

While I agree that there are no 100% toxic chemical-free strollers out there yet, this list contains stroller brand that limits the use of toxic chemicals in their stroller.

My recommendations for Flame-retardant free, non-toxic strollers are Bumbleride, followed by Britax, Nuna, and Uppababy.

As a non-toxic stroller, I really like the Zoe brand, but many parents have complained about the stroller not being that sturdy. So, I wouldn’t recommend Zoe for everyday use other than travel purposes.

2 Key Factors to Consider When Purchasing an Eco-Friendly Stroller

So you’ve decided to go organic stroller? Good for you! A stroller is the largest purchase most parents will make for their new baby. It's a wonderful idea to spend those dollars in an earth-friendly way.

Before you begin wading through the details, ask yourself these basic questions:

• What is my budget?
• Where am I willing to compromise and where am I not?

The best intentions often don’t jive with our budget. For that reason, it’s important to think about cost before you start shopping. Eco-friendly strollers do not have to be more expensive than others, but sometimes they are. That is why the second question is important. Set your budget, and then decide what aspects you’re willing to compromise on and which you are not. This guide will help you with those decisions.

What to look for in an earth-friendly stroller

At PeppyParents.com, we use two main factors to judge how eco-friendly a stroller is. Those factors are:

• Screenings for potential toxins,
• Manufacturing process.

What’s good for baby is good for the planet.

Every stroller manufacturer we work with wants to create a product that's good for babies. But some companies take that practice far past regulations and into the future. Companies doing extra to protect your child are often naturally more earth-friendly.

Companies like Bumbleride and Nuna not only meet safety standards, they far surpass them. When the absence of toxins in the manufacturing process is a top concern the stroller is more likely to be earth-friendly.

These terms are the ones earth-friendly parents look for when choosing a stroller:

Made with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Fabrics

The Oeko-Tex Standard certification is an impressive distinction. Only a few stroller manufacturers in the USA take the time and energy to required to maintain it. The designation means that the fabric is free off 100 different common chemicals and toxins. This certification must be renewed annually. It is a strong sign that the company you are purchasing from walks its talk when it comes to safety.

Note: As of fall 2016, all strollers from Bumbleride and some from Nuna use Oeko-Tex Standard 100 fabrics.

A Word On Organic Fabrics

It is rare to find organic-certified fabrics on a stroller. The materials used to manufacture durable stroller seats is usually synthetic. The Oeko-Tek 100 certification is a more efficient label to look for in large gear than organic.

Look for organic fabrics when you're buying infant inserts, blankets, or other cotton fabrics. For gear, look for the Oeko-Tek 100 label.

Ask questions about flame-retardant fabric treatments.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics , many common flame retardants can be hazardous to the brain development of a child. This conversation can be confusing. These chemicals are not all the same, and not all experts agree.

In general, try to avoid products made with Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). These are illegal in some U.S. states and are no longer produced domestically. But many manufacturers in China, India and Japan still use them. Figuring out exactly which baby products have these chemical treatments can be difficult.  

Chemical treatments are typically applied to the foam within the fabric. That means you will find flame retardants in strollers, car seats, bouncers, and even some baby carriers. Few manufactures post this information online and it can change from batch-to-batch. We recommend contacting the manufacturer to ask specifically about flame retardants.

Note: As of fall 2016, Bumbleride strollers are flame retardant free.

Avoiding chemical cocktails: What other chemicals might be in my stroller?

What we understand about the chemicals used in plastics, fabrication, and other manufacturing continues to develop.  For that reason, some of the most forward-thinking manufacturers produce baby gear that goes far beyond regulatory requirements. Think of it this way, regulations tend to be reactive. That means lots of bad things have to happen to get a regulation. When you're looking for a stroller, look for companies who are doing more than just following regulations.

There are many problematic chemicals used in manufacturing. When you’re shopping for a stroller, educate yourself on these chemicals. Check where the manufacturer stands on them before you buy. These are the ones we think are the most important to understand:

When trace amounts add up to something bigger (or why we love eco-friendly baby gear)

We want to be clear. All the stroller manufacturers we work with are doing their best to make a healthy product.

Making an earth-friendly product is extra work. Sometimes that work eats into profits. Unfortunately, conscientious manufacturing isn't the norm. Companies doing this work are doing something special. There are two big reasons we love them for it:

• Trace amounts of toxins everywhere add up, especially in small bodies. The small bits of chemicals allowed in so many products are everywhere, but nobody is adding up all those traces. For example, we used to think that trace amounts of lead were no big deal. We know now that even tiny amounts have dangerous consequences for developing brains. For this reason, we recommend avoiding toxic chemicals whenever you can.
• The people manufacturing your stroller have children too. Many of the substances we’ve covered are believed to be safe once production is finished. Yet, they come with huge risks to the people manufacturing them. Just like we want our families to be safe, it’s important to prove that we want others to have that same safety. When you buy a consciously made product, you’re sending a strong message to companies about where your priorities are--not just for your own family, but for all families.

The ISO 14000 standards are a family of standards created to help organizations cut the negative affects to the environment from manufacturing. The standards go beyond complying with applicable laws. The ISO 14001 standard consists of a group of standards utilized by The European Union and other organizations.

Complying with these standards is voluntary.

Nuna utilizes solar energy, recycling programs, and special water treatment processes to make their products. Nuna is serious about green manufacturing.

Keeping your stroller safe and earth friendly means doing the right things post-purchase too. To keep your child safe, it’s essential to clean and maintain your stroller. Then, when you’re finished with it, the stroller can be recycled or sold to another family.

Regular cleaning and maintenance is essential to keeping your stroller safe for baby.

You might know that your car needs an oil change every 3,000 or so miles, and a tune-up every 30,000 or so. Well, the same is true for your stroller.

How often strollers should be checked depends on the type purchased and where you live. A good rule of thumb is every three months for a full cleaning and tune up. Spot clean and adjust as needed.

Your quarterly maintenance should consist of :

Always spot-clean spills as soon as they happen. Liquids and foods allowed to sit on the stroller fabric can stain, and could soak into the foam core. This could eventually result in mold, which isn’t good for your children to breathe in.

My little ones are growing up, what do I do with my stroller when my family finishes with it?

All earth-loving families know the importance of recycling. Did you know that you can recycle your stroller too?

We recommend passing on strollers that are in great condition to another family. You can do this by selling it or by donating it to a family/organization in need.

Strollers that have seen better days can be recycled. Look for programs at your local big box store. If you don't have one in your area, disassemble the item yourself and recycling the component parts.

After researching and test-driving TONS of strollers, I present to you the best non-toxic stroller:

The Nuna Mixx2

The first and foremost quality I want in a stroller is safety.  And I’m not talking about seatbelts and crash testing.  I’m talking about various toxins that are unfortunately found in many, if not most, strollers (I go in depth about this topic in my Guide for Buying a Non-Toxic Stroller ). The Nuna Mixx2 doesn’t have all the bad stuff.

The breakdown:

• No flame retardants
• No PA, phthalates, toxic dyes & perfumes, pesticides, PVC or added formaldehyde
• Fabric, fiber fill, and foam all abide by European REACH and EN71 standards as well as the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA)
• Hard goods made with plastics & metals comply with European REACH and EN71 standards as well as the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA)
• Stroller handles are made of polypropylene plastic with a TPE overmold and are free of PVC
• Sun Safety: Let’s not forget about sun safety.  This stroller has a large UPF 50+ canopy.  When the seat is in upright position, the canopy provides nearly 100% coverage!

2. Longevity

With strollers costing a pretty penny, you want to get your monies worth.  This stroller is recommended for birth-50 lbs.

Although you can purchase a bassinet separately (or attach various car seats), the beauty of this stroller is you don’t have to!  The stroller has a full recline feature.  You can also snap up the foot rest so it creates a bassinet-like atmosphere.  No attachments needed! No more money needed!

Another feature that aids in the longevity of the stroller is that is has both a rear-facing and forward-facing seat option.   It grows with baby as they reach those developmental milestones.

3. The Little Things

Here are some of the features that may seem small, but really add to the overall use and functionality of this stroller:

• This is a biggie; and one that most other strollers with a rear-facing seat can’t say.  Think logistics…when folding the stroller, do you really want to add in another step by having to remove/rotate the seat?
• Whether you’re trekking through the city jungle or a dirt trail, your child will appreciate the smooth ride this stroller offers.
• The smooth ride is mainly due to the large rear tires.  Many strollers with tires this big are air-filled, which I’m sure have their own benefits, but I personally did not want to mess with low tires, flat tires, re-filling tires, nail in tires, etc. 
• Perfect for tall people.  Also adds good leverage when popping curbs.
• This stroller just looks good.  And we all know, when you look good you feel good. The modern design is timeless.

For all the features this stroller provides, the price can’t be beat!  The direct competitors are $100+ more and often don’t boast all the features this has.  Put the money you’re saving into your child’s college fund and thank me later.

We are planning a trip to moscow ( st. P’berg) next month with a 1.5 yr old . Intend to do a lot of sightseeing and walking around the city.

What would be more recommended ? A baby carrier or stroller?

I think the umbrella stroller will be more convenient for you. And it is quite accessible for the use of public transport.

I would bring a collapsible stroller much easier than carrying a child around. If stairs you can rely on the kindness of strangers to lend you a hand.

Yes, COLLAPSIBLE! This is what I was trying to say, but my English failed me!!! THANKS! And, yes, local folks are usually quite helpful if the rails/ramps do not work for you...and also to give you a hand getting on and off buses, etc.

A matter of personal preference, probably - but I'd go with the carrier (provided it's something outdoorsy like a Kelty or a Deuter Kid Comfort, not babybjorn cangaroo type). But then again, my kids were used to sleeping in a backpack. Still, a longer day out can get pretty tiring - for you, not for the baby.

Maybe consider a stroller/ car seat combo? Adds flexibility for moving around (can always get a cab)...

We decided to go with our collapsible stroller - yoyo . And agreed , while navigating the metro stairs can be be a bit uncomfortable - its manageable with a light weight stroller n two pairs if arms ☺️

The carrier wouldve been a great option if the kid was less than 1 yr old- because we ended up walking quite a bit . Not to mention the general inability of a toddler to not be ok with being strapped in for long pds of time .
