This is the travel wash you need to pack

Textile, Satin, Tablecloth, Day dress, Costume, Makeover, Model, Linens, Silk, Portrait photography,

Nobody wants to bother with the laundry while they’re on holiday but if you’re away for a while, have messy youngsters in tow, or are a little accident prone – it’s impossible to avoid a bit of hand washing in the bathroom basin. The question is - do travel washes actually work or just take up valuable case space? Would shower gel work just as well in an emergency?

To find out, the GHI compared five travel washes, pitting them against some typical holiday stains - such as olive oil, foundation, pasta sauce and sun cream on identical white t-shirts. Once the t-shirts were stained up in the test lab, the team left them to dry for a few hours, then hand-washed them with the different travel washes. When dry, they were compared and assessed by our expert panel. We also washed a stained t -shirt with shower gel to see if that was just as good/better!

Our verdict? All the travel washes worked better than shower gel but not one of them managed to remove the notoriously difficult foundation or pasta sauce stain (so take extra care putting on your make-up or eating Italian when you're away!). The best performer overall removed olive oil, tomato ketchup, balsamic vinegar and sun cream...

Logo, Azure, Aqua, Electric blue, Plastic, Advertising, Skin care, Cosmetics, Banner, Sunscreen,

Lifeventure Fabric Wash £4.49, 100ml Rough Gear A good solid 2nd place. It’s the most expensive on test but worth stashing in the suitcase.

Dylon Travel Wash £1.99, 100ml Boots Did a good job of stain removal and certainly worth taking with you if you can’t get hold of the top two.

Pyramid Travel Soap £3.25, 60ml Amazon Struggled to get the suncream stain out of the t-shirt but does claim to be useable in both fresh and salt water (we didn’t test it in salt water).

Dr Beckmann Travel Wash £1.65, 100ml Amazon Disappointing results for a well-known brand though still much better than using shower gel.

Travel & Leisure / Kristin Kempa

Anyone who’s adventure-bound — whether headed on a weekend camping excursion or a month-long beach stay — will need to make smart and strategic packing decisions, especially when it comes to toiletries. The best travel toiletries are portable, multi-functioning, and convenient, to help you maintain an effective grooming routine with fewer, smaller items than what you’re used to using at home.

From compact skincare products to versatile hygiene essentials, we’ve culled the best travel toiletries in every category. And, keeping the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry-on luggage in mind, we’ve swapped some traditionally liquid items for solid alternatives to make packing even easier.

Best Face Wash

Evolvetogether face wash.

Evolvetogether

It’s lightweight, convenient, and sustainable.

It may not be as effective at removing makeup as other solutions.

Whether you’re trying to cut down on liquid toiletries for your carry-on luggage or you’re just trying to avoid potential spills in your bag, non-liquid products are very convenient for travel. This tried-and-true powder face wash comes in 100 percent biodegradable individual-use packets, so it’s easy to pack the exact amount you need for your trip.

Plus, they’re slimmer and more lightweight than even a miniature bottle of liquid. The water-activated unscented face wash turns into a foam with an ultra-fine sandy texture that cleanses, exfoliates, and moisturizes your skin.

The Details: 30 packets, 2 x 3.5 inches each

Best Face Moisturizer

Elizabeth arden eight hour cream.

It delivers long-lasting hydration in a travel-friendly tube.

Some skin types may be sensitive to salicylic acid.

Between the dry air in plane cabins and climate changes in a new environment, traveling can be taxing on your skin. This small but mighty tube of petroleum-based face cream delivers eight hours of hydration to help keep your skin soothed, dewy, and moisturized. Meanwhile, it’s formulated with vitamin E to repair damage caused to the skin barrier and salicylic acid to promote gentle cell turnover for healthier, smoother-looking skin. A bonus: this purse-friendly product doubles as a balm for cracked and chapped lips.

The Details: 1.7 ounces

Best Lotion

La roche-posay lipikar ap+m triple repair body cream.

The multi-tasking formula eliminates the need for multiple creams.

Be sure to layer SPF on top.

When you travel, multi-tasking products are your best friend as they allow you to lug fewer items overall. That’s why we love this prebiotic moisturizer, which can be used on your body, hands, and face. It’s packed with a combination of shea butter, glycerin, and niacinamide to replenish lost moisture and soothe dry skin. The non-greasy, non-sticky formula is non-comedogenic and safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.5, 6.8, or 13.52 ounces

Best Body Wash

Glossier milky jelly cleansing bar.

It won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons.

It’s pricey.

Another convenient multi-tasker, this nourishing cleansing bar can be used both on your body and face. And feel free to toss this ergonomically-designed soap bar in your carry-on luggage since it won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. The fragrance-free vegan cleanser is safe to use on sensitive skin, and it’ll leave your epidermis feeling hydrated and never stripped. It uses chamomile extract to help balance and even your complexion.

The Details: 3.85 ounces

Best Face Sunscreen

Summer fridays shadedrops spf 30 mineral milk sunscreen.

It’s enriched with vitamins, antioxidants, and soothing chamomile.

If you’re prone to sunburns, you may prefer a higher SPF value.

Whether you’re headed beachside or hitting the ski slopes, dermatologists agree it’s imperative to protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30 or higher whenever you’re spending time outdoors. This sunscreen is formulated like a lightweight serum, so it has none of that greasy, sticky feeling of traditional sunscreen, nor will it leave a white cast on your skin. It’s formulated with zinc oxide (which is safe for sensitive skin), smoothing and plumping squalane, and a vitamin E-based antioxidant complex that helps protect skin against free-radical damage.

Best Body Sunscreen

Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen lotion spf 50.

It has a comfortable, lightweight formula.

There is a faint mineral smell.

When we tested 20 different travel-sized sunscreens , this nourishing, non-greasy SPF 50 formula stood out above the rest. We particularly loved the lightweight, liquid formula, which felt more like a lotion than a sunscreen and was not as heavy or sticky as old-school sunblock tends to be.

Plus, we were able to get plenty of use out of just a small dollop of the zinc oxide-based product, making the 3-ounce a better value for the price. It offers 80 minutes of water-resistance, so it’s a great pick for beach or pool trips. Plant-based ingredients including shea butter help moisturize and soothe skin.

The Details: 3 ounces

Best Shampoo

J.r. liggett's all-natural shampoo bar.

The long-lasting bar is equal to approximately 24 ounces of liquid shampoo.

The rose, lavender, and spearmint scent may not be for everyone.

Not only are shampoo bars more environmentally friendly (due to lack of plastic packaging) and more cost-effective (since you typically get more washes out of a bar than a bottle) than their liquid counterparts, but they’re also a mess-free, TSA-friendly option for travel.

We especially love this all-natural pick because it can also be used as a body soap, a lubricant for shaving, or for hand washing clothing items such as socks and underwear. The 100 percent vegetable oil formulation doesn’t strip the natural oils from your hair and naturally conditions it, so many people find they don’t need to use an additional conditioner after shampooing (and can therefore pack one less item).

The Details: 3.5 ounces

Best Conditioner

Pureology hydrate conditioner.

It softens and moisturizes hair while controlling frizz.

It's expensive.

When subjecting your hair to new environments while traveling, it can easily get dried out. This creamy and luxurious conditioner deeply softens and nourishes stressed hair and works to restore moisture. It’s formulated with moisturizing jojoba, health-promoting green tea, and sage, which supports hair follicles. Just a small amount of this color-safe conditioner goes a long way, making it an effective choice for travel (and it helps to balance out the hefty price tag).

The Details: 1.7, 9, and 33.8 ounces

Best Hair Serum

Christophe robin regenerating serum.

This all-in-one hair serum hydrates dry hair and protects against heat damage.

Be sure to travel with the lid so the press pump doesn't get bumped accidentally.

This regenerating serum is the only hair care item you'll need to pack in your toiletry bag (besides shampoo and conditioner, of course). It's designed to hydrate and replenish dry hair while acting as a heat protectant for up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit. The main ingredients all have specific purposes, too, including strengthening prickly pear seed oil, nourishing tucuma butter, and castor oil to provide a healthy shine that won't leave your hair looking or feeling greasy. You only need to use a small amount so the tiny bottle takes up very little room and lasts a long time.

Best Hair Brush

Putysuun travel comb brush combo.

This compact item includes two styling tools in one.

It may feel a bit flimsy.

A hair brush can be a tricky item to pack due to its awkward shape and bristles, which can get caught on and damage vulnerable items such as knit sweaters. This combination tool includes a hair brush and a fine toothed comb in one, so you can address all your hair styling needs with a single item. The best part is that it folds up into a compact tool that won’t risk snagging other items in your luggage. When folded, it becomes a pocket-friendly size that’s easy to stash.

Best Hairspray

Sexyhair spray & play volumizing hairspray.

It protects hairstyles against humidity.

It can make your hair feel a little crunchy.

When you’re traveling, it’s impractical to pack various hairsprays, gels, and styling creams for a variety of hairstyles. Instead, rely on a single product which has numerous uses. This small but mighty hairspray has plenty of hold to keep your tresses securely in place no matter your activity.

The volumizing spray provides fullness, lift, hold, and shine, and it’s suitable for use on all hair types. If you’re headed to a hot or humid location, rest assured that the product’s humidity protection will help keep your strands from frizzing for up to 72 hours.

The Details: 1.5, 10, or 16 ounces

Best Hand Sanitizer

Touchland hand sanitizer.

It’s formulated with moisturizing aloe vera.

The scents are strong.

Whether you’re boarding a long-haul flight or trekking through terrain where you won’t encounter a sink for quite a while, hand sanitizer will help keep your hands clean. This flat container is extra convenient because it slides nicely into a pant or purse pocket — or you can clip it to a key ring or lanyard. The aloe vera-based formula is moisturizing, and each bottle contains 500 sprays. Choose from delicious scents like lemon-lime spritz, frosted mint, and citrus grove.

The Details: 1 ounce

Best Travel Razor

Gillette venus comfortglide white tea blades.

Courtesy of Amazon

It comes with a travel case for safe packing.

The short handle may be tougher to maneuver than a larger one.

With a mini handle and a nifty travel case, this razor is easy and safe to toss in your toiletry bag and won’t take up too much space. The pivoting head gets into tough-to-reach areas for a smooth, close shave. The three-blade razor is surrounded by water-activated gel bars that release a rich body butter lather, guarding your skin against nicks, cuts, and irritation as you shave — and eliminating the need for an additional shaving cream.

Best Mini Deodorant

Lume whole body deodorant.

It can also be used on your feet, thighs, and anywhere else you sweat.

The roll up mechanism can stick and become defective.

When you’re traveling, it’s helpful to pack multi-functioning products that allow you to tote fewer items overall. This full-body antiperspirant helps keep your pits, feet, and any other area where you tend to sweat feeling and smelling fresh for up to 72 hours. Powerful yet gentle, the aluminum-, paraben-, and baking soda-free formula is safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.2 ounces

Best Travel First Aid Kit

Protect life small first aid kit.

It helps ease the stress of mini emergencies.

 It doesn’t include pain medication.

It’s always a good idea to carry first aid essentials in case of small emergencies like scrapes or splinters. Don’t let the small size of this health kit fool you: it contains 100 pieces, including numerous bandages, gauze pads, an emergency blanket, a CPR mask, tweezers, a tape roll, and more. Pack the 7.5 x 5.2 x 1.5-inch container in your backpack or purse to address minor injuries on the go without having to stop at the drugstore.

Best Travel Toiletry Containers

Liquisnugs premium leak-proof silicone travel bottles.

The TSA-approved bottles come in two different sizes.

You may need to purchase multiple sets to accommodate all your travel liquids.

Some of your favorite toiletries may not be available in travel-friendly sizes. That’s where these nifty refillable containers come in. Available in 2- and 3-ounce sizes (use the larger containers for liquids you use more frequently), the silicone bottles are super simple to fill with your lotions, body washes, shampoos, and more thanks to a larger opening at the top. In our testing , each individual bottle held up well and there wasn’t any spillage or damage after we tossed, turned, and dropped them in our simulations.

The Details: 2 and 3 ounces

Best Toothbrush

Kulusion dental travel kit.

It holds your toothpaste, too.

It’ll count as a liquid if you fill it with toothpaste.

Here’s another useful tool that can replace multiple items. This travel-sized toothbrush comes with a built-in, refillable toothpaste container, which easily releases your preferred toothpaste with the touch of a button. When shut, the contraption keeps the soft toothbrush head clean and protected.

Best Bug Spray

Off family care insect repellent ii with picaridin.

It doesn’t have any off-putting chemical smells.

It doesn’t come in a container larger than 4 ounces.

When T+L put 16 different bug sprays to the test , this OFF! pick rose to the top of our list. What we love: the highly effective 5 percent picaridin formula has a very light scent and doesn't feel sticky at all, you may even forget you have it on. Plus, the non-leak bottle is easy to use and it disperses a fine, even mist onto skin. The 2.5-ounce size can be tossed in your carry-on luggage or it can fit in your pocket for day trips.

The Details: 2.5 and 4 ounces

Best Dry Shampoo

Living proof perfect hair day dry shampoo.

Your hair will smell fresh and clean in between washes.

It’s not cheap.

The less time you spend shampooing your hair on vacation, the more time you’ll get back to enjoy your trip. On days between hair washes, you can use a dry shampoo to freshen up your tresses and say goodbye to greasy strands. Living Proof’s cult favorite version goes a step further by actually cleansing your hair, so it looks, feels, and is clean. The fragrance is nice and not overtly floral or chemical.

The Details: 1.8, 5.5, or 9.5 ounces

Tips for Buying Travel Toiletries

Know which items you truly need.

When you pack for a trip, know you won’t necessarily need to have all the comforts of home with you. Prioritize your daily essentials including toothpaste, soap, and deodorant. Consider which items you’ll realistically use, and which ones you can do without (for instance, you may want hairspray for a trip to Paris but not for a camping excursion). If you’re staying at a hotel, think about items you may not be picky about (such as shampoo and body wash) that may be provided by the facility free of charge.

Invest in reusable containers

You may find miniature versions of your favorite products adorable to look at, but they’re not the most sustainable or cost-effective option. Plus, your favorite brands may not even have travel-size picks available. Consider investing in reusable containers in TSA-friendly sizes. That way, you can fill them with the full-sized toiletries you already buy and you can take just as much as you need for the length of your trip.

Use a clear, ziplock bag to store your liquids and prevent leaks. This also makes it easier to see what you have and comply with airport security regulations. Try to stock up on multi-tasking products (for instance, a lotion that can be used both on your face and body) so you’ll have to pack fewer items. Use reusable travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less for any larger items that you want to pack in a carry-on.

Pay attention to TSA travel restrictions and make sure all your carry-on items comply with the official 3-1-1 liquids rule , which states that you can bring containers equal to or smaller than 3.4 ounces that fit in a single quart-size resealable bag. When possible, try subbing in solid alternatives to liquid toiletries (for example, a bar of soap over a liquid body wash), which are not subject to liquid restrictions and take up less space.

Best Travel Laundry Detergent For Your Next Trip

Travel Gear Reviews_Best Travel Laundry Detergents

Not all detergents work well for handwashing; in that case, you need to find one that doesn’t leave a residue, smells delicious, and is easy to travel with.

Handily, we’ve reviewed some of the best for you. By knowing what to buy beforehand, you won’t have the hassle of looking around in your location and trying to find where to purchase travel laundry detergent!

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Best Travel Laundry Detergent Reviews

Travel Laundry Detergent Packets . Find several brands of small packets and try which one suits you here.

1. Breezeo Laundry Detergent Strips

boots travel wash

If you want to save space in your suitcase, detergent strips and an excellent sink laundry detergent option are a great way to go. Breezeo strips are high quality and great for anyone on a budget. This pack has enough for 48 loads of washing, which is undoubtedly more than enough for a regular trip, with just one strip required for one lot of laundry.

The steps contain a concentrated detergent that dissolves when added to either hot or cold water. The detergent also dissolves completely, so you don’t have to worry about granite bits of undissolved detergent sticking to your clothing – there’s nothing worse! You can either use them in a bowl, e.g., handwashing, or you can use them in a machine.

2. FINZY Laundry Detergent Sheets

boots travel wash

This detergent product comes in a pack of either one sheet, five, or ten; however, the price is not as budget-worthy as the first product we discussed. Despite that, this is a high-quality option and one of the best travel wash detergent choices that will certainly clean your clothes thoroughly and leave them smelling fresh.

These sheets are dissolvable in either hot or cold water, and you literally just put them into the bowl or the machine with your washing, and they will clean your clothes without any residue left over. They will also leave a rather pleasant scent, which some detergents don’t do! The sheets come in a pack that needs to be cut open, so you can be sure that they’re ultra-fresh at the time of use. This is, therefore, one of the best travel detergents for handwashing products.

3. WashEZE Laundry Sheets

boots travel wash

This particular travel laundry detergent comes in a box of either 30 or 40 sheets, which will certainly last you for a long time during your travels . These sheets are also a 3-in-1 product, so they clean your clothes and soften and act as a stain remover.

One sheet is enough for one lot of laundry, whether washing in a machine or a bowl, and they dissolve entirely with hot or cold water, although they do work better with hot water overall. You can also use these sheets in a dryer to ensure that your clothes remain soft and not like cardboard!

4. Tide Sport Travel Sink Packets

boots travel wash

This travel washing powder detergent is a packet that you add to your washing, either hot or cold, and the liquid will wash your clothes and ensure that it remains fresh and soft. The detergent includes Febreze to help keep odors away, allowing your clothes to be wearable.

This detergent is also ideal for removing stains, giving you a long-lasting wardrobe while traveling. The only downside is that this particular option isn’t as compact as sheets or strips, but that may not be a problem if you want the added freshness and stain removal option.

5. LG Laundry Detergent Sheets – Lucky Fiji Power Sheet

Brands we use and trust.

LG Laundry Detergent Sheets -Lucky Fiji Power Sheet

This LG product contains a box of 45 travel laundry detergent sheets, so you will have enough detergent to see you through at least a few weeks of travel . You also get the added extra of the big named brand, as LG makes high-quality washing machines and other electrical equipment.

You pop a sheet into your machine or your bowl of hot water and allow the detergent to do its magic. These sheets are the equivalent of 100 ounces of detergent in a regular liquid form, so you can be sure that your clothes will be clean. The sheets are also infused with lemon and lavender, keeping your clothes smelling delicious. You also don’t have to worry about stains, as the detergent contains a plant-based stain remover.

6. Sea to Summit Trek And Travel Liquid Soap

boots travel wash

This isn’t a detergent per se, but a travel laundry soap, which could easily be used to quickly wash your clothes while on the go. The product is small enough to be taken as cabin luggage and is also biodegradable and free of added nasties. The bottle is strong, and the lid isn’t going to leak while in your bag.

This particular soap has a green tea fragrance that is light and isn’t overpowering. Of course, you can also use this like a bar of regular soap, so you get two products in one.

7. BerryPLUS Soap Berry Eco-Friendly Natural Laundry Detergent

boots travel wash

This is an excellent option for anyone who is eco-aware, as we all should be, as a biodegradable travel clothes wash. Not only does it clean your clothes well, but it’s also eco-friendly and doesn’t contain any added chemicals or other extras.

This natural travel laundry detergent is a packet you do your laundry, made from soapberries. That means your clothes are super-clean and smell delicious at the same time. This detergent is OK to be used with regular washing machines; however, it could also be used in a bowl with hot water for soaking and hand washing.

8. Scrubba Wash Bag

boots travel wash

This isn’t a detergent but an entire laundry system, giving your clothes a cleaning experience that will eradicate dirt and stains. Because of the product’s space-saving and effectiveness, it is one of the best travel laundry kit products you can buy .

This is a portable washing machine in a bag, so you add your clothes and the detergent and squash it all together. It’s like the old-fashioned mangle or scrub board, getting rid of dirt easily.

After washing, the bag doubles as a drying bag, making it the ideal option for travel and camping breaks. It weighs just 5oz, so it’s not going to take up space or weight in your case, and you don’t have to think about finding a bowl or a plug for the sink to wash your clothes.

Laundry Travel Tips

Now you know which detergents are best to use, what else do you need to know about washing your clothes on the go? Washing your clothes certainly saves on space because you don’t have to worry about taking a million and one outfits , but it can be a drag on your time if you don’t know how to do it correctly.

Here are a few tips you can bear in mind:

  • Try and use free laundry services wherever possible; sometimes, these come at an added cost, so this is something to bear in mind in your planning.
  • Search for local laundrettes or laundromats. Again, you’ll pay for these, but they’ll typically be cheaper than hotel laundry services. Make sure you have some change for using these types of laundrette services.
  • Try and pack as many synthetic fabrics as possible, as these ordinarily dry faster than natural fabrics, saving you time on drying.
  • It’s best to do your washing in the bathtub if your hotel has one, but the sink is just as valuable.
  • Pack a travel sink stopper (plug), as many hotels don’t have these!
  • Also, pack a travel washing line you can tie up in the bathroom or on the balcony and a few pegs in a small bag.
  • A dedicated laundry bag is a good idea, as this will keep your dirty clothes, which need washing, away from your clean clothes while traveling around before you can get to do your laundry.
  • When washing, only use a small amount of detergent, as hand washing can mean small pieces of residue stick to your clothes if you use too much.
  • Make sure you give your clothes a proper wash by ensuring they’re thoroughly wet first, adding the detergent, allowing it to sud up well, and then kneading it with your hands to ensure everything is clean.
  • When rinsing, don’t stop until all soap suds have gone; otherwise, you’ll end up with that residue, and they’ll take forever to dry.
  • Wring out all excess water as much as possible before you hang your clothes to dry
  • Make use of radiators for drying if your hotel room has one.

Also like Clean People Ultra Concentrated Laundry Detergent Strips. They come in both scented and unscented. For stains, I bring along a small slice of Basin’s Fabric Stain Remover Soap.

Lucy

Thank you for this helpful post. Before reading it, I didn’t even know that laundry strips were a thing. But I got some Lazy Coconut strips for a recent trip to France. They were awesome, and helped me with sink laundry so I could pack light and travel with just a backpack and carryon.

Laura Wilson

This is incredibly helpful! With so many to choose from and never using them before I’ve had a hard time deciding. Thank you so much!

Kristi

I used the Ethique laundry bar to wash clothing in the hotel room sink on our 3-week Scandinavia trip in August. It worked great!

Victoria Barkoff

I use “eco-friendly” Kind brand unscented laundry sheets. You can easily tear off a piece for smaller washes. For stains, I slice off a piece of The Soap Works Stain-Remover Laundry Bar (from a Canadian company) and pack it in a small plastic bag.

Pat Galfano

I love my powder (citrus for easy rinse out) Forever New . Carry in a small zip lock bag and use for sink wash out. roll in towel, squeeze and hang to dry.

Lisa Anderson Spencer

I travel with the Scrubba washing bag and, typically, use the hotel shower gel or shampoo. The Earth laundry papers are good too.

Courtney

Thanks for sharing so many helpful options! I’m looking forward to trying some of the eco laundry strips on my next trip as they seem very compact and easy to adjust based on the amount of items I need to wash.

These Travelon Laundry Soap Sheets were a game changer on our last few trips to Italy. So portable, not a liquid and get the job done!

Cheri streicher

I have used Tide sheets and they worked wonderfully! So thin to pack and weigh next to nothing – they are a must fir any trip longer than a weekend!

Susan H

For the way I travel, I like to bring powdered soap, it’s lighter weight and less messy than liquid. I usually just bring some of the Charlies laundry soap powder I use at home. I’m sensitive to fragrances so it works great for me.

Michelle Pengely

After reading this post, for Australian readers, I found an Australian brand Strip Clean that makes detergent strips that are free from phosphorus, parabens and harsh chemicals. Took them on our recent trip to The Red Centre in Australia. Great product

Sarah Packard

I’m bringing the Sink Suds on a cruise soon, they seem like the perfect way to wash some of my unmentionables mid-trip! 🙂

Lisa

Love the laundry sheets; a small bit is usually ample for travel sink laundry.

Sybil

The Fels-Naptha idea is brilliant! I always spill something on myself that needs a little extra cleaning power. Since I use this at home, it is always on hand to pack.

Allison Benham

My travel buddy brought the Earth Breeze laundry sheets on our trip to Italy and I loved them so much I use them at home now too!

Natalie E.Tackett

Thanks for sharing other readers’ comments and reviews of these products. Very helpful! I use The Laundress wash and stain bar when traveling. It comes as a palm sized bar of soap, but I cut it in 1/4 pieces so it’s more compact and takes up less room.

Dorca

Great article will be traveling to Italy for the first time in October and this group has been a great help fora first time traveler. Than you

Eunice

I love that you’ve included some eco-friendly options. I have a trip coming up and plan to try out the laundry sheets.

Karen

I love using Soak, but now I’m excited to try out some of these other options. I especially like the idea of the solid detergents, that don’t have to take up room in my quart bag!

Becky Collins

I brought a pack of Breezo detergent sheets on a work trip to Europe and I became everyone’s best friend! The sheet of strips made for easy sharing with my fellow travelers and they were very thankful (especially when the learned of the price for the hotel laundry service!). Bonus – my luggage smelled great from the pack itself!

Liz Walter

I love detergent sheets, and use rhem at home as well! Grove Collective has great ones that travel perfectly, for machines. For sinks, I like the Travelon ones.

Colleen Ney

I’ve been looking for this info and of course you’ve got it. Thanks!!

After reading this post I went with the Breezeo laundry sheets. Not only were they easy to pact and took up NO space, they had a fresh scent that permeated my suitcase!

Judy Soltis

I’m beginning to plan a lifelong dream of going to the UK and I know I’m going to need to use some of these suggestions for washing my clothes.

Ellen

Funny, I have never brought laundry soap on my trips. I usually just use my bar soap. 🤔

Tabatha

I had no idea that there were so many choices either. I would love to have some samples of some of these options to try at home before our next travel date.

Susan Jensen

Thanks for all of the different choices! I had no idea there was such a thing as washer sheets, what a great invention! Timely for a trip to Europe this Fall.

Jaime Breinholt

We actually bought the Scrubba bag this year for our trip to Europe & it worked amazingly well! Saved us a ton of money & time from having to find somewhere to do our laundry. Thanks for the recommendation on travel laundry soap!

Darlene Sanchez

Wow I didn’t know there are so many laundry soap options❣️ I am going to France for a month traveling with a carryon luggage and personal item only backpack. I have been following Travel Fashion Girl website since 2016. I love all the helpful information and the links to items shared for purchase❣️

Colleen Sachs

I subscribed to the Earth Breeze laundry sheets over a year ago – no more big plastic jugs!! Stuffed several into a ziploc for 3 weeks in Ireland and tore some in half or used a whole sheet, depending on how much I sink washed at various stops. Next trip: 2 weeks in Spain in Feb – already committed my brain to using the 10 piece Essential wardrobe!!

Nancy

This was a great article that introduced me to a lot of options for sink washing that I was not aware of. I’ve used Woolite packets and Travelon sheets for years, but I’m going to give SOAK a try. The rinsing is always the worst part of hand washing, so I’m intrigued by the idea of no rinse needed. I’m going to try it at home first just to see how it works. Thanks for all the information you’ve shared through the years. It’s been so helpful when packing for a trip!

Susan T

Great options. I wish more were unscented.

Janet

Oh my gosh, too many choices. I had no idea there were this many to choose from

This top-notch toothpaste will help keep your teeth clean, and your breath fresh. Since travel-sized toothpaste always seems to be one of those things you realize you’re out of on the night before you’re going on vacation, buying a bulk pack of 24 is a great idea.

Best Makeup Remover Wipes

The dermatologist-tested face wipes are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, ethanol, isopropanol, and rubbing alcohol. Best Toiletry Bag

Minted dopp kit.

Minted / Iveta Angelova

All of these spiffy toiletries deserve a spiffy place for storing. And we can’t think of a better option than this selection from minted, an online marketplace for independent artists. The 100 percent cotton Dopp Kit has a leather handle and a foil-pressed leather tag. Each Dopp Kit has a leather handle and a custom foil-pressed leather tag, which you can personalize with a name or initials for free. With a water-repellent liner, you’re ready for all the fun and curveballs that travel throws at you, and you can choose from a wide array of fun patterns and designs like pastel geo and wandering .

What to Look for in Toiletries

If you’re flying, you have to abide by TSA’s rule of limiting liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in your carry-on bag to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Before purchasing travel-sized toiletries online, scan the specs or look at the images to ensure they don’t exceed the size limit. The last thing you want to do is toss your expensive new sunscreen before you make it to your destination or scramble to check your bag and pay additional money so you can bring large containers.

It goes without saying, but budget matters. For most of us, breaking the bank when shopping for travel toiletries isn’t ideal, and if you’re traveling for a week or two, you likely won’t mind using products that are a touch less fancy than the ones you opt for at home. With that in mind, it is nice to pamper yourself with something luxuriant while out of town, so you may want to splurge on a nice hair mask or a high-quality moisturizing cream.

Travel-sized sunscreen: Essential to have. Travel-sized perfume: Nice to have (but also less pleasant to have if the case cracks in transit, and you’ve got a floral or cedar wood explosion all over your clothes). Remember that when you travel, you often come home with more in your bags than what you set out with, so less is more. Whatever you can get rid of from your toiletry bag that isn’t a must-have (or that your hotel already stocks for guests) helps free up precious real estate in your luggage. We promise, you can live a few days without your eight-step anti-aging routine. But that amazing glass turtle you found at a boutique in Sitges, Spain? That you need room for in your bag, friends.

Don’t forget your mini-toothpaste. We repeat: Don’t forget your mini-toothpaste. You will be slapping yourself when you arrive at your destination, and your first order of business is finding a convenience store rather than making it to your 8 o’clock concert on time. Beyond toothpaste, your essential travel toiletries list should include a toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, and face wash. A razor, moisturizer, and a toiletry kit to stash it all are nice to have, too.

Check out your hotel or Airbnb’s website for details on what’s included in your stay. It might list what kind of toiletry essentials are provided in their accommodations. (If you’re staying at a friend’s place, you can always ask, too.) That way, if you see that your digs have shampoo, conditioner, soap, face wash, and the like, you can skip on packing your own. Another way to cut down on what you pack is to try double-duty products; for instance, sunscreen doubles as a foundation or 2-in-1 shampoo.

In general, paring down your “beauty routine” on vacation is always a good choice. Spending less time futzing in the bathroom, and more time on the beach or exploring a museum, is always a win in our book. And one more savvy tip: Do that overnight hair mask the night before you leave on vacation. That way, you’ll have one fewer thing to pack in your toiletry kit.

If you’re traveling by plane, remember TSA’s liquid rule. “You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.” You can check out all the juicy details on the policy at TSA.gov here . Put all of these items into one clear, quart-size toiletry bag or zip-top plastic bag. Even if you’re not flying, it’s nice to do this to stay organized.

Ensure that the toiletry bag, zip-top plastic bag, and all liquids or gels are securely closed. We also recommend using this rule of thumb when packing travel toiletries: When in doubt, leave it at home. If you’re unsure you’ll use it while out of town, leave it behind and free up the luggage real estate.

Everything You Need to Do Laundry While Traveling, According to Globe-trotters

boots travel wash

Expert travelers know that one way to avoid overpacking , especially on longer trips, is washing your clothes while you’re away. Doing laundry mid-trip lets you get more wear out of your outfits, while still packing light. And “a lighter suitcase helps you avoid extra airline fees — and leaves more room for souvenirs during your trip,” according to Judy Perl, president of the Judy Perl Worldwide Travel agency.

Hotel laundry services, however, can be prohibitively expensive, and likely won’t even be an option if you’re camping , backpacking , or staying in hostels or Airbnbs. But with the help of a few handy items, Perl and the three other frequent travelers we spoke with say that it can be just as easy to wash your clothes on your own, allowing you to pack light and save money. As Stephanie Flor, the founder of Around the World Beauty , says, “When you do your own laundry, you’re in control.” Below, our experts recommend their favorite detergents , garment steamers , laundry bags , and more to stash in your carry-on so you can do a load (or two) on your next trip.

An odor-fighting detergent

Defunkify Active Wear Laundry Detergent Powder

Flor told us, “When doing my own laundry, I always bring my own detergent because the last thing I want to do is run around looking for a laundry place at midnight.” Most of our experts agreed, offering up a number of different options depending on what you may need to wash. No matter the detergent you choose, Perl notes that “small travel packets of detergent are wonderful because you can stash them in your suitcase without taking up too much space, and you can easily wash your smaller items in the hotel sink [or] bathtub .” For something that cleans well and can tackle odors on any garment, Flor loves these travel-size pouches of Defunkify powder, a detergent specifically designed for laundering sweaty activewear . She adds that Defunkify is made from plant-based, ecofriendly ingredients that won’t pollute local water systems. “In many parts of the world you have to take into consideration what you’re putting into the water-filter system,” she explains. “It’s all about traveling consciously.”

A detergent for delicates

Soak Minisoak Travel Pack

For hand-washing delicates like underwear or bathing suits that need extra attention, travel writer Beth Sandland uses Soak detergent in convenient single-use packets. There’s no need to rinse or scrub, she says, so you won’t risk tearing or pulling your garments. “Just put a teaspoonful in a sink of water and soak,” Sandland explains.

A mess-free detergent

Travelon Laundry Soap Sheets

While the above liquid and powder detergents are fairly spill-proof, if you’re very wary of messes, try these soap sheets recommended by Perl. The solid sheets dissolve in water so, as she says, there’s “no risk of them spilling in your bag on trips where your bag is getting tossed or jostled around more frequently.” Plus, the tiny pack of 50 biodegradable sheets will take up minimal room in your luggage . Whichever detergent you use, Perl stresses the importance of bringing a sink stopper in case your hotel’s or other home-away-from-home’s bathroom doesn’t have one (or it isn’t working).

A detergent dupe

Lush Montalbano Shampoo Bar

Although it’s meant for hair, Sandland calls this shampoo bar her “secret weapon” for washing clothes away from home. “I used it to wash a hand-wash-only dress in the shower in Indonesia, and discovered it works really well for freshening up clothes,” she says. “It only takes a few minutes, smells lovely, and is totally plastic-free.”

A washing add-in

Shout Color Catcher Dye Trapping Sheets

Even if you’re fastidious about separating your dark- and light-colored clothes at home, it’s not always feasible to wash two separate loads while traveling. If you’re planning to do laundry while on the road and don’t want to restrict yourself to a monochrome wardrobe, Perl says these dye-trapping sheets are a “must” because they “prevent dyes from bleeding so you can still wash light and dark colors together.” Simply toss one in the sink or bathtub while you’re washing your clothes to avoid staining whites and other light-colored fabrics.

A mini-steamer

URPOWER Garment Steamer

Nail artist and frequent traveler Julie Kandalec , the creator of blog Julie Off Duty , told us she always packs this mini-steamer to give clothes a quick refresh after unpacking. Traveling with the steamer allows her to “bring thinner fabrics that would normally wrinkle like crazy,” she adds. Kandalec says that this one is “compact and super simple to use,” and that it “heats up in 30 seconds and is very, very efficient — even on hard-to-steam fabrics like linen.” Flor also brings a steamer with her on work-related trips when she can’t look rumpled, and Perl says that, in a pinch, you can use your “shower time as an opportunity to de-wrinkle your clothes” by simply hanging wrinkled garments in the bathroom while you shower and letting the hot steam do its work.

An all-in-one washing bag

Scrubba Wash Bag

When she doesn’t have access to a sink or tub, Sandland relies on this innovative washing bag that’s perfect for camping, backpacking, or van-living . Just add water, detergent, and clothing, then give the bag a vigorous rub against a flat surface so that the hundreds of mini nodes inside can scrub away at your dirty gear. When it’s not in use, the washing bag folds down small enough to slip into any pocket of your luggage.

A washing bag for delicates

The Laundress Mesh Washing Bag Bundle

We’ve previously written about using these mesh bags to protect underwear in the washing machine, and Flor says the same idea applies when you’re hand-washing delicates on the road. To save space, she’ll also pack her undergarments in these bags before putting them in her suitcase.

A laundry bag for dirty clothes

Reisenthel Turquoise Mesh Sack

For separating your dirty clothes from clean stuff until you have a chance to wash them, Perl recommends this strong and durable laundry bag from the German brand Reisenthel. She says that the packable mesh sack “fits nicely in a suitcase and is extra functional, with a zipper and a loop to hang it when needed.” Even if you don’t plan on doing laundry during your trip, a bag like this is useful for keeping dirty clothes together so they’re ready to wash once you get home.

  • 10 Best Travel Detergents UK 2024 | Dr Beckmann, Dylon and More

After a few days in a hotel or on the road, you may start to miss the simple home comforts, such as a washing machine and detergent. If you've ever attempted to clean garments or remove stains by washing your clothes in a hotel sink, It's time to put down the shower gel and try a travel detergent instead.

Travel washes and detergents are formulated to work in low temperatures and can be used for handwashing clothes. These are small but mighty, highly concentrated products that can save you a lot of hassle and embarrassment. This article will guide you through some of the best travel washes in the UK on Amazon, Tesco and eBay, including zero-waste and eco-friendly swaps for when you're on the go!

What Is a Travel Wash and Why Should You Use One?

More travel essentials, how to choose a travel detergent in the uk - buying guide.

There is quite a big selection of travel washes available on the market today. When choosing a laundry detergent, there are several factors you should pay attention to, such as the form it comes in, which fabrics it's suitable for, eco-friendliness and whether rinsing is required. This section will walk you through the key points to consider while shopping online.

Travel Washes Come In Both Solid and Liquid Forms

Most travel washes come either in liquid form, like most regular detergents, or as a solid in the form of soap sheets. Which one you decide to choose is a matter of personal preference and how much washing you intend to do .

Liquid detergents tend to be a bit more powerful and are easier to apply directly onto soiled areas when soaking your laundry. You only need a little bit of liquid wash to create enough lather to help lift up the dirt from the fabric and dissolve it, which is why liquid detergents are typically more economical.

Solid travel detergents will often come in the form of soluble sheets. These work best on lighter stains and soils . They'll usually need to first be dissolved in water, and then that soapy water can be used to clean your clothes. However, you may need to use more than one sheet to create sufficient lather.

Decide Whether You Prefer Bio or Non-Bio Detergent

The main difference between bio and non-bio detergent is in the kind of stains they can tackle and how gentle they are on the skin. A bio laundry detergent contains special enzymes that can break down proteins and fats in stains like oil, blood, various foods and grass. In other words, they are very effective at removing difficult stains.

These are best used in lower temperatures around 30°C - 40°C so that the enzymes do not get deactivated. The main downside of bio detergents is that they can be quite harsh on the skin if you are not wearing gloves.

Non-bio detergents on the other hand, do not contain any enzymes and are great for those with sensitive skin. Although they may not be able to remove those super difficult stains, they are still great for keeping your clothes clean and fresh.

Ensure That the Detergent Is Suitable for Delicate Fabrics

If you are a lover of silks and wools, you may want to make sure that the detergent you choose is safe for those fabrics. By choosing a suitable detergent, you can avoid damaging your favourite garments or dulling their colour.

Although not all travel detergents will be suitable for delicate fabrics , those that are should state so on the label. A handy pro-tip to bear in mind when washing delicates by hand is to dissolve the detergent in non-hot water completely, before adding in clothes. Gently swish them about, then rinse them with cool water. Finally, gently squeeze out the water, instead of twisting the fabric.

Some Detergents Do Not Require Rinsing

A relatively recent invention is rinse-free detergent . As the name suggests, these do not require the final step of rinsing after the washing is done. This way, you will be saving time and effort.

As an additional benefit, rinse-free detergents mean there is less handling of the garment involved , resulting in less stress caused to the fibres. This is particularly useful if you are dealing with delicate fabrics, underwear or wools and silks.

Simply wash your clothes as you normally would with a rinse-free detergent. Squeeze out the excess water (the detergent and the dirt will stay in the water) and hand it up to dry. You should only be left with a pleasant delicate fragrance (if the wash has one) that will dissipate over time.

For Sensitive Skin, Choose a Fragrance-Free Detergent

There are many reasons why someone might prefer to choose a fragrance-free detergent . While some people are simply sensitive to fragrances and find them headache-inducing, others avoid them due to skin sensitivities.

If you fall into either of those categories, a scent-free travel wash may be for you. Simply add the desired amount of the wash to your laundry, lather up, rinse and it should leave your clothes smelling fresh and neutral without any overpowering fragrances .

Consider How Eco-Friendly the Detergent Is

When selecting a travel wash, particularly if you are going camping, consider how eco-friendly it is . Although these days, most manufacturers adhere to certain ecological standards and make their products safe for the environment, some will be more eco-friendly than others.

For example, if you are going camping and are planning on washing your clothes in a stream or river, you may want to consider what kind of impact this detergent will have on wildlife . Some detergents will be easier to dispose of than others in nature. However, if you are staying in a hotel and washing your clothes in a sink connected to a sewer, this may be less of an issue.

Concentrated Travel Wash 1

Perfect Travel Companion

This handy little travel wash is every traveller's dream as it is effective in both hot and cold water. The wash produces a gentle yet effective lather, that's kind to skin and is easy to rinse out. The formula is even effective at removing oily and stubborn stains,  without containing any bleach or harsh chemicals that could potentially damage your garments.

The 100 ml packaging is compact and one tube can easily last you for twenty washes . Last but not least, the wash leaves behind a pleasant fragrance for freshly scented clothes.

Sea To Summit Trek & Travel Pocket Laundry Wash | 50 sheets

Trek & Travel Pocket Laundry Wash 1

Ultra-Light and Compact Detergent

Compact, lightweight and spillage-free this is a genius solution if you are aiming to travel light . That's because this detergent comes in the form of ultra-thin sheets. Each pack contains 50 sheets and generally, one or two is enough to create a good amount of lather.

As an additional bonus, the wash is good at removing stains and is easy to rinse out. It won't necessarily remove tough stains as it doesn't contain any bleach. That said, it's ideal for light soiling and is not harmful to the environment when disposed of in nature.

The Kind Wash Natural Indian Soap Nuts | 1 kg

Natural Indian Soap Nuts 1

A Natural Solution to Dirt

Soap nuts have gained popularity in recent years as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional detergent . Native to India, the shells of dried soap nuts contain saponine which is released when soaked in water. Simply add 4 or 5 shells to cold or warm water, and voilá! You have soapy water similar to what you would get using normal detergent.

The foam from soap nuts is gentle on the skin, does not damage clothing, and is zero-waste . Plus, the shells are biodegradable and can be thrown away without any problems. The lather can smell a little bit vinegary, but this usually vanishes upon drying.

Soak Wash Travel Size | 90 ml

Wash Travel Size 1

Rinse-Free, Hassle-Free Detergent

The name Soak speaks for itself. Simply leave your clothes to soak in the sink or in a bucket, give it a stir and enjoy fresh laundry without rinsing . This travel wash is ideal for light soiling and saves you on time, water and energy.

This is a compact yet powerful product that should last for at least 18 washes  as you only need a teaspoon per 5 litres of water. The wash is also biodegradable, making it ideal for camping, and although it's not fragrance-free, the scent is very mild, fresh and pleasant.

Sea to Summit Wilderness Wash With Citronella | 89 ml

Wilderness Wash With Citronella 1

A Truly Multipurpose Travel Wash

A unique and truly multipurpose wash, this product is not only suitable for doing your laundry on the go, but can also be used for washing the dishes and your body . Gentle and biodegradable, it's perfect for camping as this product does not contain any harsh chemicals and will not harm the environment.

The main downside, is that it comes in a rather small bottle for a multi-purpose wash, so it won't last very long. Nevertheless, it has a refreshing citronella scent and, as a pleasant bonus, it also acts as an insect repellent .

Lifeventure Fabric Wash | 100 ml

Fabric Wash 1

A Simple, No-Frills Wash

This minimalist, concentrated fabric wash is perfect for maintaining your clothes on the go and is suitable for use at any temperature . It has a faint, delicate scent, making it ideal for those who do not like their clothes to smell of detergent.

Although the wash is labelled as biodegradable, it is inadvisable to use it in rivers or dispose of it into lakes and streams as it still has the potential to harm aquatic life . But overall, it's pretty mild on the skin and does not cause irritation.

Dr Beckmann Travel Wash | 100 ml

Travel Wash 1

Effective Stain Removal for Whites and Colours

Cheap and compact, this handy little travel wash is perfect for both colourful and white fabrics . It's effective for removing stains and can last a long time, due to its concentrated formula. It can even be applied directly onto stubborn stains for removing oil, blood and various other types of dirt.

Even though it isn't non-bio detergent, try to avoid using this one on delicate fabrics such as silk and wool. It is, however, ideal for cotton and synthetics and is effective for use in all types of water. It can even be used with seawater , just make sure not to dispose of the lather back into the sea.

Tru Earth Eco-Strips | 32 Sheets

Eco-Strips 1

Saving Space and Saving the Planet

Hypoallergenic, chlorine-free and fragrance-free, these ultra-light yet heavy-duty washing strips are ideal for business trips, holidays and camping. Formulated specifically to clean even the dirtiest laundry , these detergent strips can remove anything from blood and sweat to smoke and wine.

This wash is considered eco-friendly and can even be easily disposed of in rivers, seas and lakes . However, the main drawback of this product is the hefty price tag for 32 sheets. Thankfully, the price does reflect the high quality of this product.

PMS Laundry Detergent Sheets | 15 sheets

Laundry Detergent Sheets 1

Water-Soluble Soap Sheets

Easy to use and hassle-free, this travel wash is ideal for those who wish to travel light . Simply dissolve one sheet in warm water to create a rich lather. This soap does not have any added fragrance and hence should leave the fabric smelling fresh and neutral.

Just note that these soap sheets work best in warmer water , meaning that it can be difficult to achieve effective results if you are camping and only have access to cold water. We also wouldn't recommend using it on silks and wool. However, they are good at removing a wide variety of stains from sturdier fabrics.

Stergene Travel Wash | 100 ml

A cheap and effective travel wash.

Affordably priced and efficient, this travel wash is great for wool, silks and other delicate fabrics . Although this is a non-bio detergent, it's pretty good at removing fresh oily stains and can essentially provide "first-aid" for your clothes while you are on holiday.

However, the formula isn't the most delicate on skin, so it's advisable to avoid using this detergent without household gloves . Because of this, you also shouldn't dispose of it in nature. Nevertheless, it's a long-lasting product that would be best suited for sink washing in hotels.

A travel wash is a specialised concentrated detergent suitable for washing clothes in hotel sinks or simple buckets while you are away from home. They are generally designed to be effective at any temperature and come in small portable sizes of around 100ml.

Because you are unlikely to have access to a washing machine while travelling, a travel detergent is a worthwhile purchase. Like with any regular detergent, travel washes act by lifting away the grime with the help of surfactants, as well as enzymes that break down stains, oil and dirt. Although, they tend to be more gentle on the skin , as you will generally be washing clothes by hand without gloves.

The best wash bags for men who groom on the go

By Heidi Quill , Jessie Atkinson and Faye Fearon

All the grooming gear but no idea where to keep it all? From The North Face to Louis Vuitton, GQ’s edit of the best wash bags for men will carry your toiletries in style

Take your grooming seriously? Then a plastic security bag just won’t cut it. To schlep your best toiletries, moisturiser , aftershave and the like in style you’ll need wash bags of repute. Or at least one that’s on a par with the effort you put into scouting an exfoliator worth its salt.

That’s why we’ve done our research to find the best wash bags for men to ensure you’re carrying your skin and haircare solutions in gentlemanly fashion. From Reiss to Prada, these picks will marry with a suitcase , gym kit , duffle or backpack , or simply as a stylish tool to store any bathroom counter overspill. And once you have your wash bag sorted, be sure to keep it well stocked with our weekly pick of new grooming items .

What are the best wash bags in 2023?

Brunello Cucinelli

Matchesfashion

If flexing is your raison d'être, may we present you with your latest: a Brunello Cucinelli wash bag that'll put all others to shame.

What is the best fabric for a wash bag?

We tend to fill our wash bags with a variety of oils, creams and ointments that, when the victim of a pressurised air cabin or particularly bumpy car ride, can result in quite the sticky mess within your wash bag. It's for that reason that you'll most commonly find wash bags in a range of leathers or synthetic nylon, both being especially durable, tear-resistant and able to be simply wiped clean.

How do you clean a wash bag?

Whilst some wash bags will be able to go in the washing machine (the lapel should let you know), a spot of soap and hot water will never go amiss, and hand washing is generally a pretty safe bet. When it comes to leather wash bags, we recommend cleaning the inside with a damp cloth while gently wiping the outside panels with either a mild soap or an upholstery-specific wipe.

If you’re less inclined to drop half of your pay cheque on something very few people are going to see, we wouldn’t blame you one bit. Head to Arket, we say. There, you’ll find a sub-£20 model that’s both generously sized and appealing to behold.

Bottega Veneta

Sometimes just one kind of construction says it all. Keeping things simple (and yet, oh-so-stylish) through the brand's signature Intrecciato-leather weaving style, Bottega Veneta’s classic wash bag is detailed with a side strap and zipped pocket inside. Guaranteed to keep you in good standing amongst the fashion crowd, it's an instant ‘yes’ from us.

With a price tag that’s not for the faint of heart, this Brunello Cucinelli wash bag is true to the ethos of the label that made it: if your new purchase isn’t an heirloom, why buy it? Grained leather and carefully sectioned, this wash bag does everything that its equivalents do…the only difference is that you’ll want to pass this one onto your offspring.

Not content with standing out by way of its heritage logo, Givenchy has also opted to reinvent the zip on its water-resistant nylon wash bag. Added chunk and logo detailing to the main zipper give this bathroom caddy the verve of a leather jacket : just the kind of flexing we’d expect of the French fashion house.

Thom Browne

Even if you’re not a fan of the shorts suit that Thom Browne famously designs, you’ll be hard-pressed to shun the label’s wash bag, which exhibits all of the hallmarks of a piece that’ll last your entire lifetime. Grained leather? Check. Ample space? Check. Charming flourishes that stand it apart from the banality of others in its genre? Check.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford is all about dark elegance and precise, classic glamour, and what could be more classic than black-on-black? In a tonal design, this Tom Ford washbag is cut from nylon and reinforced with leather trims for a sharp style with a rich, dusky feel.

How to Wash Clothes While Traveling

boots travel wash

Everyone deserves that much-needed vacation, but no one wants their laundry chores to follow along with them. Unfortunately, the pile of dirty clothes doesn’t stop growing when you go on vacation. Doing laundry while traveling will decrease the loads you will have to do when you get home and help you pack less items. Although it may seem frustrating and time-consuming, washing clothes while traveling can help you to pack lighter and leaves you more room for souvenirs and other mementos from your trip.

If you are planning on taking a vacation that is longer than one week then you should consider the different laundry options you may have while on the go. There are a variety of methods for you to choose from when thinking about doing laundry while traveling. It can be difficult to figure out which laundry option will work best for you so that you won’t waste your precious time while relaxing and enjoying your time away.

Not many people want to spend extra money from their budget on washing clothes while traveling, that’s why we compiled a list of different laundry options for different budgets. From using hotel services to washing your clothes in your hotel room to finding a laundromat and so much more, we outline a number of different laundry services so you can figure out which option may work best for you.

We have also created a list of different products that would make washing clothes while traveling much easier. Whether you are backpacking through Europe, relaxing at an all-inclusive resort, or RVing across the country, there are a variety of laundry products available to suit your needs.

Options For Washing Clothes While Traveling

We have created a list of 7 different ways that you can wash your clothes on your next vacation.

Use Hotel Services

The hospitality industry strives to be there for its customers, and this includes having  full laundry service. Whether you didn’t pack enough clothes or you packed lightly on purpose, hotel laundry service can be your lifesaver. Most hotels will have a place for your clothes to be washed while you are traveling. Whether you have signed up for regular service or you stained your favorite clothes and need a quick turnaround, hotel laundry service is the place to go.

The majority of hotels will have a similar process to sending your clothes down to their laundry services, which is outlined below.

  • Get the hotel laundry bag. Normally you will be able to find a laundry bag in your room, however, if you cannot locate one, you can always call the front desk to request one. This is where you will place all of the clothes you need to have washed.
  • Check the price list for each service. It’s important to check the pricing for each service so there are no shocking surprises when you receive your bill! Depending on where you are staying for your vacation, hotel laundry services can get pretty pricey, so this is an important step.
  • Fill out the guest laundry card. The laundry card will inform the staff cleaning your clothes what you would like done with each item. This is especially important because you can ensure that you are getting exactly what you need for your clothes.
  • Leave your clothes for the housekeeping service to pick up. Leave your clothes in the hotel laundry bag in the hallway for your maid to pick up (the laundry bag will indicate directly where to leave the bag). If you are not comfortable with leaving your clothing in the hallway of the hotel, then call the front desk and make arrangements for another option.
  • Make a note of the turnaround service times. Knowing the approximate time that your clothes will be ready won’t leave you wondering. Depending on what you need done with the clothing items you have, the times may vary. You can also inquire about the delivery of your clothing if they are not returned in a reasonable amount of time.

Pay for your laundry services. Typically the total of your laundry services will be added to your final bill, so you can take care of it when you are checking out.

Wash Clothes in Hotel Room

If utilizing the hotel’s laundry service for your laundry is not a likely solution for you or is out of your price range, then you can wash your clothes in your very own room. Washing clothes in your hotel room is very easy, cost-effective, and something you can do at the end of your day so it doesn’t get in the way of your holiday relaxing! If you are planning on doing laundry in your hotel room, there are a few things that you will need to purchase for everything to run smoothly. The three main things that you will need to wash clothes in a hotel room are sink stoppers, laundry detergent sheets, and a travel clothesline (optional), which we will go into more detail about in later sections.

Here’s a guide on how to wash clothes in a hotel room while on vacation.

  • Pre-rinse - Running your clothing under the water will get an initial layer of dirt off before you start washing them.
  • Fill the sink or bathtub with water and soap - You can use the sink or the bathtub, depending on how many items of clothing you are washing. This is where you may need a sink stopper as not every hotel will have one in your room. Fill the bathtub or the sink with water and travel detergent or detergent sheets .
  • Wash your clothing - Throw your clothes in the filled tub and knead them thoroughly to remove as much of the dirt as possible.
  • Drain the Dirty Water - Once the water stops getting visibly dirty, then drain the water. Squeeze out the excess water from your clothing by wringing them out and setting them aside for the next step.
  • Refill and repeat - repeat steps 2-4 until the water run clear - Typically this process only needs to be repeated once, however, more may be required depending on how dirty the clothes may be
  • Rinse - once the water runs clear, rinse your clothing one more time to remove any excess water and soap

How to Wash Clothes While Traveling

Find a Laundromat

Finding a laundromat near your hotel can be a more cost-effective solution to washing your clothes while traveling. Although laundromats are more inexpensive than using the hotel’s laundry services, it does require more time than the other options. It will be easy to find a laundromat if you are staying in the city, however, if you are staying at an all-inclusive resort this is not the best option for doing your laundry. Another shortcoming of doing laundry at a laundromat while traveling is that you will have to carry your clothing back and forth from your hotel to the laundromat.

If you have never been to a laundromat before it can get confusing but we have curated a guide on how to wash clothes while traveling at a laundromat.

  • Bring change to operate machines - laundromats tend to require quarters to run. If you do not have any quarters on hand, most laundromats have change machines inside.
  • Bring laundry detergent, dryer sheets/balls, and fabric softener - if you already know that you are going to be doing your laundry at a laundromat on vacation, bringing your own laundry products will be more cost-effective and convenient. If this is more of a last-minute decision you can either head to the store to buy the necessities or just like the coin machines, most laundromats have vending machines with all of the laundry products you may need
  • Load washing machines - once you have all of your laundry products, head over to the washing machines and make sure that you find an empty washing machine and load your clothes into the machine with your laundry detergent
  • Insert coins and turn the dial to the preferred setting - insert the required amount of quarters into the machine and turn the preferred setting for your laundry
  • Wait for the cycle to finish
  • Put laundry in the dryer - once your laundry is finished washing, head over to the dryers and throw your clothing into an empty dryer
  • Insert coins and turn the dial to the preferred setting - again insert your quarters into the dryer and set the machine to the preferred preference

Local Laundry Services

If you do not want to wash your clothes while traveling yourself, but completing it through the hotel services is too expensive, you should consider finding a local laundry service to assist you. Locating a laundry service near your hotel can be convenient and cost-effective. This is a good option if you don’t want your laundry to get in the way of all the vacationing you plan on enjoying. Going to a laundry service is very easy to use, however making sure that you find a good one is important, this is where reading Google reviews comes in handy and can help you plan ahead. Here is a guide on how to wash clothes while traveling using local laundry services near your hotel:

  • Choosing a location - Once you find the laundry service you want to use drop off your clothing
  • Check the pricing - make sure that you are aware of the pricing for their services before committing to it
  • Know what work you want to be done - make sure that you know what work you want to be done on your clothing, whether you just want them washed and dried or if you need a certain stain removed and pay for the services

How to Wash Clothes While Traveling

Travel by RV

When you are traveling by a campervan or an RV, you pretty much have all of the options listed above at your disposal, excluding using hotel services. When hand washing your clothing in your RV (follow the same steps as above) there is often more room for the laundry supplies than for people who can only bring travel-size products with them. With more storage in your RV, you are able to bring full-size products that can be more cost-effective. Another advantage of  doing laundry while traveling by RV is that you have the option to hang your clothes outside to dry. You can also hit laundromats or laundry services while you’re driving through towns. Another option is when stopping at a campground or RV site, you can look for laundry services, as some of these sites have these services available to patrons.

Another option is to purchase mini washing machines that are specifically made for RVs. These machines are very compact and easy to fit into small spaces in your campervan. Some of these machines are run without electricity and others are run on electricity. Depending on which machine you choose will change the pricing. Depending on how long you plan on travelling in an RV and the size of your RV, some will have smaller versions of washing machines and dryers, similar to the ones you can find in your home.

Travel Laundry Kit

When washing clothes while traveling , it is important that you have the necessary products to ensure that your clothes are getting the cleaning they need. There are five main things that everyone needs to do their laundry in an effective and efficient way while on vacation. These five things include travel laundry sheets, a laundry bag specific for dirty clothes, a wash bag, a travel clothesline and a sink stopper.

Travel Laundry Sheets

Using travel laundry detergent sheets is an effective way to wash your laundry and it ensures that you are not taking up unnecessary space in your suitcase. Using the soap that is already in your hotel room on your laundry is not healthy for your clothing and not as effective as laundry detergent. Travel laundry detergent sheets, like the Kind Laundry  travel size detergent sheets , are a non-liquid option and compact for the ease of travelling as well as the ease of use.

Laundry Bag For Dirty Clothes

Make sure that you have a laundry bag specific for dirty clothes on hand when you are travelling to make sure that your clean clothes are not getting mixed up with your dirty ones. Using a laundry bag specifically to keep dirty clothes together will make it easier to remember which clothes need washing and it’s more convenient to transport them all together to be laundered, whether it be to the laundromat, local laundry services, or just to your bathroom.

The Wash Bag

When washing clothes while traveling, using a wash bag can help to keep your delicate garments safe, especially during an unusual washing cycle. The Premium Washable Mesh Laundry Bag from Kind Laundry is a product that protects your clothing while allowing the water and detergent to do their job. This bag also helps to prevent your items from pulling, tearing, and tangles, and to extend the life of your clothes. These convenient travel wash bags take up little space in your suitcase and are effective tools in washing your delicate clothing while traveling, such as bras, underwear, and swimsuits.

Travel Clothesline

Bringing a travel clothesline on vacation can help with the drying process should you wish to wash your clothes within your room. A travel clothesline helps you hang up more of your clothing in your hotel room or your campervan and can prevent them from wrinkling after you wash them. When purchasing your travel clothesline, it is important to make sure that it can handle the weight of your clothing, so testing it out at home can be beneficial.

The Sink Stopper

Bringing along a sink stopper for use in your hotel room when doing laundry while traveling can be a real game changer. There is a surprising amount of hotels that no longer have a sink stopper in their bathrooms, and without this handy helper, there is no way to fill up your tub or sink. It is better safe than sorry to bring a sink stopper with you if you plan on doing your laundry in your hotel room. Sink stoppers are inexpensive and always good to have on hand just in case one is needed.

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

boots travel wash

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

boots travel wash

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

boots travel wash

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

boots travel wash

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

boots travel wash

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

boots travel wash

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
