What to see in Peru
From coastal deserts, to the Andes Mountains, to the Amazon Rainforest Peru is filled with wonders. Hidden Incan ruins on terraced mountaintops, mysterious Nazca Lines, unique animals, and breathtaking landscapes await you.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the icon of the Inca Empire, and “New World Wonder” found in Peru. A 15th-century stone citadel nestled in the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains, a trip to Peru isn't complete without seeing this historical site for yourself.
Amazon Rainforest
Your eyes will widen as you step into the largest jungle in the world. The Amazon Rainforest houses countless species of plants, birds, fish, mammals, and insects. Stay in a comfortable all-inclusive lodge near the Tambopata Research Center in Puerto Maldonado or take a cruise on the Amazon River from Iquitos as you explore the sights and sounds of pristine nature.
The Inca Trail
The Inca Trail is one of the most famous trekking routes in South America. From Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail takes you 26-miles along 500-year old pathways once reserved for spiritual leaders and royalty. The trail only permits 500 people per day (including guides, chefs, and porters) so Inca Trail permits can sell out 6-months in advance.
Cusco is the gateway to Machu Picchu and was the capital of the Inca Empire. Impressive archaeological ruins like Sacsayhuaman, Qorikancha, and various Inca temples surround the area offering endless opportunities for exploration. The monumental Inti Raymi festival is held in Cusco every year in June.
Lake Titicaca
As the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca offers some of the world's most stunning sunsets while its waters make for panoramic views of the otherworldly Uros and Taquile floating islands. Believed to be the birthplace of the mighty Inca civilization, Lake Titicaca is a cultural and natural wonder in Peru.
Sacred Valley
The aptly named Sacred Valley is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landscapes you'll pass through on your Peru tour. Adventurers can zip line or thrill in white water rafting tours. Visit the multi-hued Maras salt mines, explore the Ollantaytambo ruins and Pisac market, or embark on the Classic Inca Trail. Rest easy in scenic Sacred Valley hotels overlooking the mighty Andes Mountains before moving onwards to Aguas Calientes and a tour of Machu Picchu.
The capital city of Lima is the ultimate destination for foodies. Alongside modern skyscrapers visit pre-Incan ruins like Huaca Pucllana, explore award-winning food, the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, government palaces, the historic UNESCO World Heritage city center, a boardwalk overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and artsy bohemian districts. Shop, eat and enjoy a Pisco sour in this lively city.
The Nazca Lines
The Nazca Lines are gargantuan geoglyphs and geometric shapes carved into the arid desert landscapes. They draw in travelers with their grand scale and mystery. Predating the Inca Empire, the Nazca Line geoglyphs are an example of prehistoric art and archeology. Make your own interpretations of their purpose as you soar over, or get a birds-eye view from the observation tower of these magnificent artifacts that reveal stories of civilizations long gone.
Colca Canyon
Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world and offers spectacular views and stunning photos. The lush valley, terraced mountains, natural hot springs, and larger-than-life Andean condors soaring overhead make this a worthwhile stop on your tour of Peru.
Arequipa is a charming colonial town that doesn't feel like the second-largest city in Peru. Nicknamed the white city after the white volcanic stone used in the construction of the city. Arequipans are proud of their unique regional cuisine and invite you to taste the difference. Stone carvings, early cave paintings, and perfectly preserved mummified remains call to lovers of history while views of El Misti Volcano, the white-stone basilica Cathedral in the historical center, and gardens in the city of Santa Catalina Monastery intrigue lovers of beauty.
Paracas National Reserve
Paracas National Reserve is a unique coastal desert ecosystem brimming with migratory birds, ocean-kissed rock formations, and sea lions resting on every imaginable surface. Choose from activities like ATV rides, bike tours, and boat trips to the Ballestas Islands or lay on the restorative beaches overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Visit intriguing museums with some of the most well-preserved artifacts of the Paracas culture. As one of the first National Reserves in Peru, this protected park is an emblem of Peru's beautiful coastal landscape.

Do Inca Expert tours have specific start dates?
No, our Peru tours can start any day of the year. Our trips are fully customizable; you can choose the start and end date of your trip, the specific destinations you want to see, the hotels you prefer, and the tours you want for a unique experience.
How much time do I need to see Peru?
Give yourself at least 4 days in Peru to avoid being affected by altitude sickness when visiting Machu Picchu. Most visitors exploring the iconic sites of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu spend between 7 - 10 days in Peru. If you want to add destinations like the Amazon Rainforest, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, or the Nazca Lines, allot 2-4 days for each destination depending on the destinations and tours you want.
How do I get to Machu Picchu?
After arriving at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, take an hour and a half flight from Lima to the city of Cusco. In Cusco, a scenic train ride will transfer you 3 hours and 15 minutes to the quaint town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. A 30-minute shuttle bus ascends you to the main entrance of the Machu Picchu citadel. You can also opt to hike one of the famous treks to Machu Picchu from Cusco or the Sacred Valley like the Inca Trail, Lares Trek, or Salkantay Trek instead of the train.
We recommend you pace yourself and arrive at Machu Picchu gradually to avoid being affected by altitude sickness. Spending one or two nights in Cusco will acclimate your body to the high altitude and result in a more enjoyable experience at Machu Picchu.
When is the best time to travel to Peru?
The best time to visit Peru is during Peru's winter months between May and September. This is the dry season in the Andes which offers favorable weather patterns for the most popular sites in Peru like Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Inca Trail, and the Amazon Rainforest in Puerto Maldonado. The prime time to visit coastal Lima is during Peru's summer months between December and April to enjoy the warm summer sunshine and coastal beaches.
Do I need a visa to enter Peru?
Travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, and select other countries do not need a tourist visa to enter Peru. Do note that all travelers must have a passport that is valid for more than six months after your departure date. Upon arrival at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, Peruvian Immigrations will stamp your passport and mark the number of days you are permitted to stay, typically 90 days.
For specific information about visa requirements for your country, visit VisaHQ.
Is Peru safe?
Yes, Peru is a safe tourist destination to travel to. Travelers should exercise regular caution by keeping expensive items in your hotel safety box, keeping an eye on personal belongings, and being aware of your surroundings in crowded areas like markets.
Our Top Pick hotels are all located in safe, convenient locations and come equipped with safes for storing your valuables.
For safety information regarding Covid-19, please review our updated post about coronavirus in Peru.
Consult your doctor and visit the CDC Peru website for more information about vaccination recommendations and requirements in Peru.
Should I go to Lima?
We think - yes! Lima houses something for every kind of traveler, world-renowned gastronomy that brings travelers specifically to Lima, a UNESCO downtown historic center, top museums like Larco Museum, art galleries, shopping malls overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and adventure activities like paragliding over the Lima skyline or surfing. Since you'll be landing at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport anyway, why not add on an extra day in Peru's capital?
Contact an Inca Expert travel advisor to see if Lima would be worth adding to your Peru trip.
What language do Peruvians speak?
Spanish is the primary language spoken in Peru as a result of being colonized by Spain in 1533. The indigenous languages of Quechua and Aymara are also official languages of Peru that can be encountered more often in rural areas. Even though English is not widely spoken in Peru, your guides, hotel personnel, and the use of a language translator like Google Translate will make your time in Peru easy.
All Inca Expert tours are done in private with English-speaking local guides.
Can you drink the tap water in Peru?
No. Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink unless purified or boiled. Travelers should purchase bottled water. You can also utilize refill stations with boiled or filtered water often available in your hotel lobby. Boiled drinks like coffee and tea are safe to drink.
What is transportation like on Inca Expert's Peru tours?
Inca Expert prearranges all transportation for your Peru tour to give you complete peace of mind. Private, clean, and roomy H1 or Sprinter vans will meet you at your hotels or airport and bring you from A to B. Choose between the Luxury Hiram Bingham train or Vistadome Train to Machu Picchu. If traveling from Lima to the Nazca Lines or Paracas, a VIP bus with large seats and ample leg-room will be reserved in your name.
Do I need to buy a voltage converter/plug adapter for my Peru trip?
You may need to bring a voltage converter and electrical plug adaptor for your electronics when traveling in Peru. Peru uses 220-volt electricity, instead of 110-volts. If your device does not have built-in dual voltage (110V/220V) you will need an adaptor so your electronics do not surge. Most mobile phones, laptops, and cameras have this built-in, but be sure to double-check before plugging in. Most electrical outlets, like the ones in top-rated hotels, are now designed to support both the American flat-pronged plug and the European round-prong plug, but if you plan to charge your devices offsite from your hotel, it will be handy to have a Type C plug adapter just in case.
Can I use ATMs and credit cards in Peru?
Yes. ATMs are abundant in major cities but generally charge a $3-$6 fee to your debit card to use the machine. Locations include BCP, Scotiabank, Interbank, BBVA Continental, and more. Credit cards are widely accepted in Peru with VISA being the major credit card provider. Always keep some Peruvian soles on hand because some locations offer discounts for cash, and local markets and street vendors only accept soles.
How much do I tip?
It is customary to tip in Peru for exceptional services as you'll receive on a tour with Inca Expert. The exact amount is up to your discretion, but we recommend:
Guide: Half-day private tour - 30-35 soles ($8-$10 USD) Full-day private tour - 50-60 soles ($14-$16 USD)
Driver: Half-day private tour - 5 soles ($1.50 USD) Full-day private tour - 10 soles ($3 USD)
4-Day Inca Trail/ Multi-day Trekking tour: Guide: 60-80 soles per person ($16-USD 22) Chef: 115 soles collective tip (USD 30 collective tip) Porters: 100 soles per porter collective tip (USD 25 per porter collective tip)
Servers: 10% of the total bill
What is the exchange rate?
The exchange rate for US dollars (USD) to Peruvian Soles (PEN) is currently $1 USD to 3.77 PEN. Money can be exchanged at an exchange house (casa de cambio) in any destination in Peru though bigger cities like Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima will have more options to find the best rates.
Will I experience symptoms of altitude sickness on my Peru tour?
40-50% of travelers experience minor symptoms of altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness, like shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness when traveling in high altitude destinations in Peru such as on the Inca Trail, in Cusco, Arequipa, and Lake Titicaca. Symptoms of altitude sickness generally alleviate after 24-48 hours in altitude. Best practices for minimizing its impact on your trip include taking the time to acclimate, drinking lots of water, resting, avoiding alcohol, and eating light non-fatty foods upon arrival at altitude.
Consult with your doctor before traveling to high altitude destinations.

As Peru’s capital, the stunning city of Lima is fondly known as the 'City of Kings' and has a wealth of reminders of life in the Old World. Owing to its numerous historical monuments, Lima’s Historic Centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Lima Cathedral, first built in the 16th century, then rebuilt following earthquake damage in the 18th century, has 16 chapels in total and is also home to the Religious Art Museum.
Curious adventurers frequently visit the San Francisco Monastery’s shadowy catacombs - a burial site up until the 1800s that contains thousands of bones and skulls, arranged in circular pits. Also within the Historic Center is Huaca Pucllana, the ruins of a 1500-year-old pre-Incan pyramid that is beautifully illuminated at night. Peru's Sacred Valley, was once at the heart of the Incan Empire. Today, its colorful, traditional market in the town of Chinchero attracts visitors from all over the world. Close by in the town of Maras, the spectacular terraced salt pans, which date back to Incan times and have been passed down through the generations, give an incredible view of the Andean scenery. West of Maras, head to Moray to view the enormous circular terraces that resemble an amphitheater and are thought to have been used for agricultural experiments in Incan times.
Additional impressive Inca ruins can be found at the town of Ollantaytambo, recognized as a National Archaeological Site. Perhaps one of the most sought-after destinations in Peru is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu. This enigmatic 'Lost City of the Incas' includes the fascinating Temple of the Sun at Korikancha, the Sacred Plaza and the Intihuatana, which is believed to be an ancient sun clock. Back in the modern world, Plaza de Armas (or Plaza Mayor) is the ideal spot for shopping. Cruising Lake Titicaca, South America’s largest lake, will give you the opportunity to see the famous floating islands of Uros. Here, locals bundle reeds from the lake to build floating platforms, houses and canoes. A short distance onward will bring you to the island of Amantani, known for its weaving and breathtaking landscape.
Spices and strong flavors are to be expected in Peruvian cuisine, together with fresh, healthy meal options. The national dish is ceviche – a marinated fresh fish dish. ‘Lima causa’ is another popular dish, consisting of potato, avocado, tomato and tuna fish. For those who keep guinea pigs as pets, ‘cuy’ is not a good plan to try as this Peruvian delicacy does not disguise the animal it comes from! Either fried or roasted to give it a crispy skin, you can expect to see a whole guinea pig served in full form and it is typically eaten using hands instead of using cutlery.
If you’d like to stick to more familiar meats, ‘lomo saltado’ is Peru’s answer to steak and chips. Marinated strips of sirloin steak are mixed with onions, tomatoes and French fries, then usually served with rice. Another beef dish is ‘antichucos’ - grilled beef heart served on skewers. Like beef, alpaca meat is commonly served in Peru. Be sure to try ‘pachamanca’ - a spicy meat dish of either mutton, lamb, chicken, guinea pig or pork, that is baked underground on hot stones. ‘Pollo a la brasa’ brings together a blend of soy sauce, lime juice, paprika, pepper, oregano, cumin and garlic as a marinade on grilled chicken. Vegetarians will have plenty to choose from too, with dishes such as ‘escribano arequipeno’ (potato salad with peppers), ‘ensalada de pallares’ (a lima butter bean salad in a citrus dressing), and ‘empanadas’ (small pastries that can either be meat-filled or vegetarian). Those with a sweet tooth are in luck as Peruvian ‘dulces’ (sweets or desserts) are abundant.
One of the most popular is ‘suspiro limeño’ - a delicious combination of caramelized sugar, cinnamon, Port wine and meringue. ‘Pie de limon’ (lime pie), ‘crema volteada’ (crème caramel), ‘torta de chocolate’ (chocolate cake), ‘piona’ (a sponge cake roll with jam or jelly inside and coated with powdered sugar), ‘mazamorra morada’ (a thick type of jam or jelly made from purple corn, giving it a unique flavor), and ‘leche asada’ (a roasted custard dish) are just some of the delights you can try. Peru also boasts some wonderful tropical fruits, including the lucuma - a fleshy fruit that is a yellow-orange color and has a sweet, caramel taste. It can be eaten raw, cooked, dried or used as a sweetener in powered form.
As the highly regarded national drink, ‘pisco sour’ even has the holiday ‘National Pisco Sour Day’ dedicated to it! This sweet liquor includes Pisco, lime juice and sugar syrup. Those who enjoy beer should sample the foamy ‘chica de jora’, made from an Andean yellow corn, and ‘chica de fruitilla’ - a pink-colored, sweeter version of chica de jora, made with strawberries and yellow corn. Peruvian branded beers include Pilsen Callao, Cristal and Cusqueña. For a non-alcoholic traditional flavor of Peru, ‘chica morada’ is comprised of purple corn (giving it a distinct dark purple color), cinnamon, cloves, pineapple and sugar. Delicious fruit juices made with pineapple, papaya, guava and banana to name just a few can be found everywhere.
Peru is a wildlife hotspot with more than 500 mammal species, including armadillos, sloths, monkeys, tamarins, foxes, bush dogs, weasels, giant otters, maned wolves, deer, jaguars, pumas, spectacled bears, llamas, alpacas, killer whales, pilot whales, humpback whales, sperm whales, and dolphins. Peru’s bird population is one of the world’s most diverse, with more than 1,800 known species and new breeds still being discovered. Reptiles and amphibians are also plentiful, with tortoises, crocodiles, caimans, and numerous types of turtles and frogs making up the Peruvian animal kingdom. The immense biodiversity in this incredible country can be attributed to the Pacific Ocean, the Amazon Rainforest and the Andes all being found here, plus a multitude of natural areas and ecosystems.

PERU LUXURY TOURS
Luxury travel peru.
Although modern-day travelers may not be seeking gold and riches, the natural beauty and man-made wonders of ancient civilizations make Peru just as alluring today as it was to the imagination of the 16th-century Spanish conquistadors. Your Peru luxury tour will reveal distinct environments and dramatic natural features, including the Pacific coast, the arid highlands, the cloud forests on the slopes of the impressive Andes, and the lush Amazon rainforest that covers more than half of the country. A number of civilizations have made their mark here, providing a fascinating mix of ancient ruins that can be explored on private tours of Peru, such as the famed Machu Picchu, and Spanish colonial architecture.

Machu Picchu Luxury Tours, Peru
A fascinating journey into the ancient Inca Empire
Lima | Sacred Valley | Machu Picchu | Cusco
When to go?
PERU'S HIGHLIGHTS
In the Inca Empire, Cusco was known as the navel of the world. Today, this high-altitude city is a fascinating blend of its Inca roots (literally, when it comes to the bases of many buildings) and Spanish colonial style. The cathedral and narrow streets will be immediately familiar to travelers who have visited other Spanish colonial cities in the Americas. At the same time, a private tour to the bustling central market with a professional chef will introduce unique ingredients used and produced by the local population.
Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley is a must-see during any luxury tour of Peru. As well as being an excellent place to begin an exploration of Inca culture, thanks to its lower altitude and well-preserved ruins, the Sacred Valley is also a place of stunning natural beauty. Located at the foot of the Andes mountains, adventure seekers have a beautiful playground with a wide variety of options, from biking to horseback riding to hiking. For history buffs, captivating circular ruins can be found in Moray, and salt terraces that pre-date even the Inca Empire are located outside of the village of Maras. As one travels through the valley, the colorfully dressed local population can still be seen using age-old terraced farming techniques from their ancestors.
Machu Picchu
At 8,200 feet above sea level and covering over five square miles, the Machu Picchu ruins overlook a lush rainforest in the heart of the Peruvian Andes. This exceptional site is a remarkable remnant of the Inca Empire at the height of its glory, and the extraordinary harmony between its natural and cultural elements makes it one of the ‘must-see’ destinations of a lifetime. Travelers can embark on private, luxury tours of Machu Picchu either on the impressive Hiram Bingham train, named for the American explorer who made the ruins famous after his 1911 visit, or by hiking to the ruins. The challenging but incredible hike will be completed with a private guide via the Inca Trail over a few days or a shorter day hike from the train stop at kilometer 104.
Foodies will delight at the world-class gastronomy in the modern-day capital of Lima as they journey through Peru on a private tour. With an astounding mix of indigenous, Spanish, and even Asian cultures, as well as access to both the unusual ingredients of the Amazon and fresh seafood from the Pacific Ocean, it’s no surprise Lima is a hot spot in the culinary scene. The Spanish influence can also be seen in colonial sites and fascinating museums throughout the city.
Peruvian Amazon
For nature lovers, Blue Parallel offers two ways to explore the lush Peruvian Amazon: on the water by luxury cruise or on land from an elegant eco-lodge. The colors and sounds of the Amazonian flora and fauna will dazzle visitors at both sunrise and sunset. Onboard the river cruise, a gourmet chef will be on hand to bring the mouth-watering delicacies of Peru to life. For guests who prefer a land-based luxury Peru tour, the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica property allows for a more active exploration of the jungle via hikes on the jungle floor or from above on their Canopy Walkway for a privileged view of the rainforest.
Lake Titicaca
Although its claim to fame is its status as the world’s highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca has much more to offer travelers willing to venture off the beaten path. Floating on its spectacular blue waters are the man-made reed islands of the indigenous Uru people. This stunning lake, nestled between the snowcapped peaks of the Andes, was also central to the beliefs of the Incan civilization as the birthplace of their powerful Sun god. Guests can experience this striking landscape and these extraordinary cultures in private using the five-star luxury hotel Titilaka as a base.
Arequipa & Colca Canyon
Also known as the White City, Arequipa lies at the foot of the Andes and features beautiful white stone, colonial-style buildings. However, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers more than just incredible architecture. Although maybe a bit macabre to some, for travelers interested in the Incan culture, a visit to the Museo Santuarios Andinos on your Peru tour is a must. Here visitors can see evidence of Incan human sacrifice in the mummy of the “Ice Maiden,” a young girl who was murdered in the 15th century. For travelers who like to get off the beaten path, Arequipa is also the gateway to the deepest canyon in the Southern Hemisphere, Colca Canyon. Here, in the natural beauty of the canyon, the local population continues to practice the pre-Incan technique of terrace farming. This is also an essential stop for birders, as sightings of the world’s largest flying bird, the Andean condor, are common.
Nazca Lines
Although the Inca might be the most famous, Peru has been home to a variety of indigenous cultures, including the Nazca. Experts believe the mysterious Nazca lines were mostly created by this culture of the same name. The lines, which vary from astonishing long and straight lines to depictions of animals, plants, and everyday objects, are best viewed from the air in a private plane, an exciting experience that can be a part of luxury travel in Peru. These massive ancient geoglyphs, whose purpose is still debated by scholars, were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.

"Thank you again for the high class service from Blue Parallel. You and your team were excellent. The trip was phenomenal and each one of our guides were exceptional! The hotels and restaurants were also first class. I know this was done last minute just think if we really planned! I have been asked for my itinerary by 10 different people... I will refer Blue Parallel!"
Irwin Simon, Chairman & CEO at Tilray Brands
“We are now back home after a wonderful trip to Morocco. This may have been our best trip yet with Blue Parallel. Everything ran like a clock. The food was great, the hotels were great and the country was great. We all feel our main guide, Adib, was exceptionally good. He was very well informed and went above and beyond to make us all happy during the trip. His driver was also outstanding and made us all feel safe on the treacherous roads of Morocco. It was truly one of the best vacations we have ever had.”
Len Berlik, Executive VP for Uniqema, ICI
"I must reiterate how extremely pleased I am with the diligent services and attention to detail that the entire Blue Parallel team have provided for this grand project --- the Ecuador trip was our first opportunity to work together "in the field" and it was an unqualified success!"
Bobby Haas, Chairman of Haas Wheat & Partners
"It has been a wonderful trip. The helicopter was thrilling and we loved seeing so much of Sicily in such an easy way. Elisa was a lovely guide and Mario was very knowledgeable. The star of the trip was Emmanuelle in Salina — we had a wonderful time hiking with him. He was a delightful young man and a very knowledgeable, helpful guide. Just terrific. Thank you for all your hard work!"
Kevin Poorman, CEO of PSP Capital Partners and Pritzker Realty Group
"As usual, your planning, staff, and execution was super. Everyone with Blue Parallel has been very helpful and knowledgeable throughout our stay in Brazil. They anticipate what needs to be done and make necessary changes with apparent ease. Altogether an excellent trip, as we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly."
Bruce Atwater, Former Chairman of General Mills Inc.
"On behalf of all of us who went on this tour, I wanted to thank you for organizing a wonderful trip to Andalucia and for doing it so efficiently and graciously. We also want to extend our compliments to the team; Fabricio was an extraordinary guide and host, and was supported by a great group of drivers and local hosts. We couldn't have been more pleased."

Discover One of the New Seven Wonders of the World
There’s a reason that Machu Picchu is high on every round up of bucket list destinations. Visiting the Lost City is like stepping into another world. The awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site is perched on a mountain ridge some 2,400m above sea level and commands jaw-dropping views over the surrounding landscapes.
The city itself is a testament to the skill and ambition of Incan civilisation with its incredibly well preserved structures telling the tale of lives lived in centuries gone by. Machu Picchu is one of the most archeologically important sites in Peru and perhaps the world.
Machu Picchu is situated to the north west of Cusco and can be reached in a number of different ways. Visitor numbers are limited to help ensure the preservation of the citadel, so with smart planning you’ll have an incredible, uncrowded experience.
For true luxury, travel by train from Cusco or the Sacred Valley on services like the Vistadome and the Hiram Bingham . If you’re after a more active approach then hiking the Inca Trail will take you on an adventure through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country before finally arriving at your destination.
As well as an in-depth private tour, we recommend that you take some time to explore the ruins by yourself – you could even climb Huayna Picchu for an alternative view. Your Jacada travel designer will help you decide on the best option for your trip and make sure that you have the Machu Picchu experience you’ve been dreaming of.
Luxury train travel along winding tracks, through villages, along crashing rivers and glimpsing the ancient trail, walked by the incas to reach Machu Picchu
Spend a day at the ruins of Machu Picchu with expert guides who bring the citadel to life
Hike the Sun Gate, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for exciting activity and jaw-dropping views
Stay at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu for tasty Peruvian cuisine, relaxing spa treatments and wildlife walks
Visit the Sanctuary Lodge , with its enviable position at the entrance to Machu Picchu for traditional afternoon tea

By far one of the most detail specific itineraries we have ever followed. Lily and Berni were outstanding and followed through every step of the way. We could not be more pleased!
This is our third experience with Jacada so we will skip a lot of the preamble for the prior review. We obviously love this company to the point where we have visited three continents with them across three vacations. Any time I plan an international trip, they are my go-to. For our Peru trip, we wanted to have another great…
Jacada organized a completely custom made 17-day tour for our family of 4 to Ecuador and Peru, including the Galapagos and Machu Pichu. They really listened to our preferences and every details of the trip was well planned, super fun, and exceeded our expectations most of the time. Would highly recommend Jacada. We will definitely book with them again.
both pre-travel and during-travel support was great; communication avenues were always clear and provided. the local guides and drivers were fantastic. the hiking, views and accommodations on the lodge to lodge portion could not be beat.
Everything was wonderful. We really appreciated the thoughtful touches and surprises along the way.

I set up a private tour for 11 friends and my husband and I. We worked with Luciana at PV Travels in Peru. If there was a rating above Excellent I would happily give it. Luciana and everyone on the PV Travel team were truly exceptional. They were professional, friendly, efficient and if they could think of a way to go "above and beyone" they would do it with a smile. Everyone in our group had the best trip ever! I wish I could think of a comment that would give them an opportunity to improve, but they were just so good that I can't. We all fell in love with Peru because of the big hearts of our PV travel team. When you travel you hope that the experience lets you have experiences that truly change your heart. That is what we had. I feel different and better having met this group and adventured with them. So Thank you Tour Radar for having PV travel on your Peru team. I would instanly recommend Tour Radar because of PV travel. Regan Rowe

There is no bad time to visit Machu Picchu, but some travelers may enjoy it more during certain times of year. The rainy season and dry season each have their pros and cons.

Rainy Season (December Through April)
- Rainy days are common, especially in February, which is the wettest month of the year
- Morning fog that may hinder views
- Breathtakingly green vegetation
- Possible cloud cover that can lead to lower visibility, clouds typically disperse after the morning
- Lower tourism for experiencing Machu Picchu with fewer people
Dry Season (May Through November)
- Buggy atmosphere (don’t forget your insect repellant)
- Often clear skies, ideal for taking photos
- Low chance of rain
- Peak tourist season in Machu Picchu and Cusco, with June, July and August being the busiest
- Intense sun (bring sun protection)

Hotels in Peru take guest safety seriously, and safety deposit boxes are typically equipped with advanced security features, including digital locks or keycard access. This provides an added layer of protection against theft or unauthorized access.
Insurance and Liability
In the unfortunate event that any of your belongings are lost or stolen while stored in a hotel's safety deposit box, many hotels offer liability protection and insurance, providing compensation for the loss. Be sure to check with your hotel about their specific policies.
Practical Usage
Safety deposit boxes are not only for securing valuable items but can also be used to store important travel-related documents, such as travel itineraries, tickets, and visas. Having all these essentials in one secure location simplifies your travel experience. All hotels that we use have safety deposit boxes in the hotel rooms or at the reception for your safety during your visit to Peru.
When planning your trip to Peru, make sure to prioritize the safety of your belongings by utilizing the safety deposit boxes provided by your hotel. It's a small but crucial step that can enhance your travel experience and ensure that your focus remains on exploring the wonders of this incredible country, free from the worry of your valuables. In Peru, safety and security are paramount, and the availability of safety deposit boxes in hotels is a testament to the commitment of the hospitality industry in ensuring your peace of mind during your vacation in Peru. These tips for ensuring a safe and secure trip in Peru will help you have a safe and pleasurable trip to Peru!
Peru is a country in South America, located on the western side of that continent, encompassing a part of the Andes Mountain range that runs the length of South America, and facing the South Pacific Ocean. Peru shares its borders with Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil, and Bolivia to the east and Chile to the south. What makes this country stand out among all the other countries in the world are its unsurpassed cultural diversity and history. The archaeological heritage of pre-Columbian cultures and the nexus of the ancient Inca’s empire attract the true adventure lovers to this country. Every year it gets thousands of visitors thanks to its wonders. Lots of travelers head straight to Machu Picchu as it’s the most famous destination in the country, but there is so much more to see and do. Peru has amazing beaches and its beauty is not only about historical sites and colonial cities like Lima and Cuzco. Of course, we can't forget about the natural wonders like Rainbow Mountain, Titicaca Lake, Amazon Rainforest, and the mysterious Nazca Lines. Unfortunately, Peru is also famous to be a quite dangerous country, for different reasons. The Media and Embassies often say it’s a dangerous country, it’s not unusual to see violent strikes and violent protests in the cities due to the dissatisfaction towards the government, and pickpockets are pretty common.
But if you listen to all what media says, you would never go to Peru. They generally focus on the negative aspects of the country, they only talk about strikes, violence, protests, social problems, drugs, and poverty. Of course, we are not here to deny that these issues exist, just like every other country, Peru has its issues, yet you can travel safely throughout Peruvian territory especially if you join a tour group on a Peru vacation package
The press rarely talks about how amazing the Peruvians are. They are kind people and always interested in making friends and they just want travelers to enjoy their time in the country and fall in love with their wonderful Peru. They want travelers to know that there is much more in Peru than crimes and social problems. It won’t take long to make Peruvian friends. They are really friendly, they have a Latin soul after all, and they are so lively. Of course, like in every country, not everybody is genuine and kind. Scams do exist on a small scale so it is important to have your wits about about you during your trip to Peru.
Some Issues
There are sometimes issues in Peru regarding protests and the strikes, more recently due to the arrest of the ex- President Pedro Castillo. However, this type of unrest is not generally directed at tourists. Most of the time Peruvians are just fighting for their rights in their country, because they want better conditions of life and work, they deserve a better country and they don’t want a government that makes bad decisions. The people are calling for a re-election but this has not been addressed by the government. Protests are generally not directed at tourism and tourists are generally safe unless they get caught up in the protests by accident, or the streets and tourist destinations are closed due to the protests.
Embassy /Consulate Recommendations
Embassies are advising that you should avoid any protests or government buildings where protests are likely to take place. The current protests could spread to other parts of the country and lead to road closures, further rail suspensions and closure of airports. Travellers are therefore advised to monitor local social media and adhere to government advice. They should also travel with a sufficient supply of food, water and medication, as well as local currency in cash.
Is Peru safe for family vacations?
In general, Peru is a safe country to travel with children. People are kind, the landscapes are truly stunning and the learning experiences are culturally enriching and fascinating. Many families travel to Peru, some more adventurous than others however, there are few basics to remember. For example, talk to your doctor before taking babies under 2-year-old to high elevation. Book in advance with a reputable tour operator and make sure that all activities you book are suitable for the younger members of the family.
Is it safe to travel to Peru alone?
The general answer is yes, single travelers don´t usually have too many issues. It is recommendable to learn some Spanish before your travel, a little goes a long way, when you are getting around Peru.
Female travelers
Peru is generally safe for female travellers. Women will however, get more unwanted attention, such as dealing with wolf whistling and cat calls. Women should be prudent if alone at night, you may be seen as an easy target for thieves; also, if you are at the bar, you should never leave your drink unattended.
How safe is the water and food in Peru?
In some countries, it is appropriate to drink tap water. Unfortunately, this is not an option in Peru. Make sure you boil the tap water before drinking it at least for 1 minute. In general, the tap water is loaded with limescale and is detectable on drinking even when boiled. If you are staying at hotels, we recommend bringing a refillable bottle with you to stock up on water from their “bidon” of purified water, and avoid the use of plastics.

Peru, a mesmerizing country known for its rich cultural heritage, ancient ruins, and stunning landscapes, beckons adventurers from all around the world. While the allure of Peru is undeniable, so is the presence of pickpockets, a common challenge for tourists. Here, we will shed light on the crafty pickpockets of Peru and provide essential tips to help travelers safeguard their belongings and enjoy a secure exploration of this Andean gem. Here are some Safety tips for travelers to Peru.
The Pickpocket Predicament
Pickpocketing is a prevalent issue in many major cities and tourist destinations in Peru, including Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, and Machu Picchu. These nimble-fingered thieves often target distracted or unsuspecting tourists in crowded areas, public transportation, markets, and even historical sites. The methods employed by pickpockets are as diverse as the country itself, making it crucial for travelers to be vigilant during their visit to Peru.
Safety Tips for Travelers
Conceal Valuables
Keep your money, passport, and other valuable documents concealed in an under-clothing pouch or a money belt. Avoid carrying large sums of cash or flashy jewelry.
Use Anti-Theft Bags
Invest in anti-theft bags with features like lockable zippers, cut-resistant straps, and RFID-blocking compartments. These will make it much harder for pickpockets to access your belongings.
Stay Aware
Pay attention to your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Be cautious of individuals who get too close, bump into you, or exhibit unusual behavior.
Divide and Secure
Divide your valuables into multiple pockets and bags. This way, even if a pickpocket succeeds in taking one item, the rest will remain safe.
Beware of Distractions
Pickpockets often use distraction techniques. Be cautious if someone spills something on you, asks for directions, or engages you in conversation abruptly.
Opt for Secure Transportation
When using public transportation, especially buses and trains, be on guard. Keep an eye on your belongings and use luggage locks if necessary.
Prevent Digital Theft
Use password protection and tracking apps for your electronic devices. Ensure your gadgets are secure, and avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for sensitive transactions.
Know Emergency Numbers
Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and contact information for your country's embassy in Peru in case you need assistance.
Stay Informed
Stay updated on the latest travel advisories and safety recommendations for your destination. Local insights from fellow travelers in Peru can be invaluable.
Blend In
Avoid drawing attention to yourself by dressing like a local and speaking quietly in public. Dress modestly and respectfully when visiting religious or cultural sites.
Exploring the enchanting land of Peru is an unforgettable experience, but it's essential to be aware of the presence of pickpockets and take measures to protect your belongings. By following the safety tips outlined in this article, you can minimize the risk of falling victim to theft and fully enjoy the remarkable attractions, culture, and hospitality that Peru has to offer. Stay vigilant, stay prepared, and create lasting memories in this captivating trip to Peru.
On a Peru Vacation package to explore the enchanting landscapes of Peru, staying connected is crucial. Whether you want to share your incredible experiences with friends and family or ensure access to navigation apps and travel information, getting a local SIM card is a convenient and cost-effective solution. Here we'll guide you through the process of purchasing a SIM card in Peru, so you can stay connected and make the most of your journey.
Why Buy a Local SIM Card in Peru?
Cost-Effective Communication
Roaming charges from your home country can quickly add up, making it expensive to stay in touch while traveling in Peru. Purchasing a local SIM card is a budget-friendly alternative, allowing you to enjoy affordable data, call, and text rates, saving you money in the long run.
Reliable Coverage
Local SIM cards in Peru are more likely to provide better coverage in remote and rural areas compared to international roaming services. This is especially important when you plan to explore places like the Andes Mountains, the Amazon Rainforest, or the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Convenient Data Access
With a local SIM card, you can access the internet on the go, making it easy to use mapping and translation apps, check bus or train schedules, and search for nearby attractions, restaurants, and accommodations.
Staying in Touch
Having a local number during you Peru vacation package makes it easier for friends, family, or fellow travelers to reach you, reducing the hassle of international dialing codes and ensuring you can be reached in case of emergencies.
Buying a SIM Card in Peru: Step by Step
Choose a Network Provider
Peru has several mobile network providers, but the two most popular and widely used ones are Claro and Movistar. Both offer reliable coverage and a range of prepaid plans suitable for travelers. You can purchase SIM cards from their stores or authorized resellers.
Requirements
You will need your passport to purchase a SIM card in Peru. It's a legal requirement for registration purposes, so make sure to carry it with you when you visit a provider's store or kiosk.
Select a Plan
Once you have chosen a network provider, discuss your needs with the store staff. They will help you select a suitable prepaid plan based on your data, call, and text requirements. Plans often come in different sizes, with varying amounts of data and validity periods.
Registration
The salesperson will register your SIM card using your passport information. This process is straightforward and should only take a few minutes.
Insert the SIM Card
After you have completed the registration and purchased a plan, the salesperson will help you insert the SIM card into your phone. They will also set up any necessary network settings.
Top Up Your Credit
Prepaid plans come with a fixed amount of credit for data, calls, and texts. You can top up your credit at most convenience stores, kiosks, and authorized dealers. Be sure to check your balance regularly to avoid running out of credit.
Enjoy Your Stay
With your new Peruvian SIM card, you're now ready to explore the country without worrying about expensive roaming fees. You can stay connected, share your experiences, and access valuable travel information on the go.
Buying a SIM card in Peru is a simple and cost-effective way to ensure seamless communication during your journey through this captivating country. With reliable coverage and affordable data plans, you'll have the freedom to explore Peru's diverse landscapes, engage with its rich culture, and stay connected with loved ones. So, before you embark on your Peru adventure trip, remember to grab a local SIM card and enjoy a well-connected and hassle-free travel experience.
Peru, with its diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, is a captivating destination for travelers. As you plan your Peru Vacation package to this South American gem, it's essential to be well-prepared, and one of the often overlooked aspects of travel is understanding the country's electrical system, plug sockets, and power chargers. Electrical voltage and adapter requirements in Peru, may be different from your home country, so this guide will help you navigate the complexities of Peru's power infrastructure, ensuring your devices stay charged throughout your Peru adventure trip.
Peru's Electrical System
Peru's electrical system operates at a voltage of 220 volts and a frequency of 60 hertz. This is different from many countries, including the United States and Canada, which use 110-120 volts and 60 hertz. It's crucial to check the voltage requirements of your electronic devices before plugging them into Peruvian outlets to avoid damage or malfunction.
Plug Types in Peru
Peru primarily uses two types of plug sockets:
- Type A: This plug has two flat pins, similar to those used in North America. However, due to the higher voltage in Peru, it's not advisable to use a Type A plug for devices designed for 110-120 volts. If your device is dual voltage (110-240 volts), you can use a Type A adapter.
- Type C: Type C plugs are the standard European two-pin plugs, with round pins. Most modern hotels and accommodations in Peru are equipped with Type C outlets.
Some upscale hotels and establishments in Peru may also have Type B outlets, which are the same as Type A but have an additional grounding pin. These can accommodate both Type A and Type B plugs.
Adapters and Converters
To ensure your devices can be used safely in peru, consider bringing the following: .
- Adapter: If your device is dual voltage (110-240V), you will only need a plug adapter to convert your plug type to match Peruvian outlets. These are inexpensive and readily available online and in most travel supply stores.
- Voltage Converter: If your device is not compatible with 220 volts, you will need a voltage converter. Be cautious when using converters, as they can be bulky and may not be suitable for certain high-power devices like hairdryers or curling irons. It's often more convenient to invest in dual-voltage travel-friendly appliances or purchase them locally on your Peru vacation package .
Charging Your Devices
When charging your devices in Peru, follow these essential tips:
- Check the voltage requirements: Always check your device's voltage requirements before plugging it in. Most modern electronic gadgets like laptops, smartphones, and cameras are dual voltage, meaning they can handle both 110-120V and 220-240V.
- Use surge protectors: Consider using surge protectors for sensitive electronic devices to safeguard them against voltage fluctuations and power surges that might occur in some areas.
- Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS): In regions with inconsistent power supply, a UPS can help protect your equipment and prevent data loss during power outages.
Understanding Peru's electrical system and the plug sockets used in the country is essential for a smooth and enjoyable travel experience. By knowing the plug types, having the right adapters, and being aware of voltage requirements, you can keep your devices charged and ready to capture the beauty on your Peru adventure trip. Traveling to Peru prepared ensures you can fully enjoy your journey without any unnecessary disruptions.
