Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens entry gate

Whether you’re a solo traveller or planning a family outing, Mysore Zoo promises an unforgettable experience. Get ready to be captivated by the sights and sounds of one of India’s oldest and most prestigious zoological gardens.

History of Mysore Zoo

Steeped in a rich tapestry of history, Mysore Zoo, formally known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, was established in 1892 by the then-royalty, Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar. This historical haven for wildlife is one of the oldest and most revered zoos in India. It was initially purposed as a palace zoo exclusively for the royal family but was opened to the public in 1902 to foster wider awareness around the conservation of nature.

Over the decades, the zoo has been transformed significantly. With its inception, it covered a mere 10 acres; now, it spans over 157 acres . A unique feature during its early years was the presence of exotic animals, such as European fauna, brought in as royal gifts from foreign dignitaries. These helped forge Mysore Zoo’s diverse and dynamic legacy.

Pioneering Conservation Efforts

Mysore Zoo has been a pioneer in conservation efforts from its onset, playing a crucial role in the breeding programs of endangered species. It set a benchmark with programmes like Captive Breeding and Reintroduction, which bolstered species like the White Peafowl and the Bar-Headed Goose.

The zoo continued evolving, with modernization efforts picking up pace in the late 20th century. As a part of this, enclosures were redesigned to mimic natural habitats, ensuring animals had ample space and environments akin to their wild counterparts. This not only improved the quality of life for the residents of the zoo but also enhanced visitor experience.

At the dawn of the 21st century, Mysore Zoo implemented scientific management practices. The integration of technology and innovative methods marked a new era in providing excellent care for the animals and optimized the educational aspect of the zoo, all while prioritizing ecological balance and wildlife preservation.

These programmes are crucial in order to bolster the populations of endangered species and ensure their survival. Moreover, Mysore Zoo’s commitment to conservation extends to its horticultural practices. As you stroll through the zoo, you’ll notice an array of indigenous plant species. These plants not only provide a more authentic habitat for the animals but also contribute to the conservation of plant diversity.

By engaging with these initiatives, you’re directly contributing to the global efforts that ensure the survival of species for generations to come. Your visit to Mysore Zoo becomes more meaningful when you understand the impact of these conservation strategies.

What I Feel after Visiting Mysore Zoo – Personal experience

I’ve been fortunate to visit the Mysore Zoo more than five times in my life. Living in Mysore, it’s been a part of my journey from childhood. On a sunny afternoon, I decided to visit this beloved place once more, and here’s what I want to share with you.

To get to the Mysore Zoo, I hopped onto bus number 201 at the city bus stand. The bus journey itself is quite an adventure. It starts at the city bus stand, goes through the zoo, and then continues up to the majestic Chamundi Hills. The best part? It’s an AC bus, and the ticket cost is just ₹15.

Once I reached the zoo, I noticed they’ve changed the entrance gate. It’s no longer the direct roadside entrance. Now, you’ll find it along an underpass road leading to the parking area.

One tip I have for visitors is to plan your zoo visit in the morning or after 3 p.m. Why? Well, during my sunny afternoon visit, most of the animals preferred staying in the shade. So, if you want to catch them in action, those are the best times.

Now, let’s talk about the stars of the show – the animals. The Mysore Zoo is home to a fascinating variety of creatures. From near-extinct species to the majestic white tiger, the lazy lion, the swift jaguar, the crazy gorilla, the beautiful peacock, and the funny elephants, each one has a story to tell.

One of the highlights of my visit was taking a selfie with a cheetah. There’s a protective glass partition, but it’s so lifelike that it feels as if you’re right there with the cheetah.

I can’t help but admire the vision of the King of Mysore who established this zoo. His foresight in creating this beautiful garden, allotting land, and ensuring its maintenance is truly commendable.

It’s worth mentioning that a leisurely walk around the zoo can take around 3 hours, so if you prefer not to walk, you can opt for an electric transport vehicle available inside.

In conclusion, my visit to the Mysore Zoo was a fantastic experience. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting Mysore. It’s a place where the charm of nature meets the legacy of the past, creating unforgettable memories for all who explore its grounds.

Mysore Zoo offers an adoption program for individuals and organizations to support the care and welfare of the animals living in the zoo. The adoption program is a unique way for individuals to show their support for wildlife conservation and to help provide for the animals’ needs, such as food, medical care, and habitat maintenance.

Adopters can choose to sponsor a specific animal or a general donation to the zoo. In return for their support, adopters receive benefits such as a certificate of adoption, a photo of their adopted animal, and regular updates on the animal’s progress.

By adopting an animal at the Mysore Zoo, individuals and organizations are making a direct impact on the lives of the animals and the future of wildlife conservation. This program is not only a meaningful way to show support but also helps to ensure that the animals receive the best possible care and attention.

Why Sokolniki park is missing? Or doesn’t it exist as before ? I used to roam inside it over fifty years ago ! May be now the forest has been consumed by the concrete edifices?

Thank you for updating us about this amazing place in Moscow. We have updated the article and included it in the Nature section of the article. But, as we have prepared the itinerary of palces based on popularity, we have not included Sokolniki Park in that section. You can find it by scrolling down to the Nature section. Top 10 Moscow Attractions – Things To Do In Moscow

1. all around the kremlin.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Start from the Alexandrovsky Sad (Alexander Garden), a highlight of Moscow center. The garden is famous for its architectural monuments, incredibly beautiful flowerbeds and history. The Eternal Flame in the memory of the fallen heroes in the World War II glows in front of the Kremlin Kutafya Tower. Alexandrovsky Sad is a place that is impossible to miss, if you are going to the Kremlin , a symbol of the Russian State, one of the greatest architectural ensembles in the world, a treasury of amazing relics and monuments of art. The famous  Armory Chamber and the Diamond Fund are real treasure houses. The Kremlin is the official President’s residence and remains a gorgeous political landmark. On the way from the Kremlin to the Red Square , you will find the State History Muzeum , with a wonderful collection of artworks, depicting Russian history. Red Square remains, as it has been for centuries, the heart and soul of Russia. Few places in the world bear the weight of history to the extent that Moscow’s central square does. From the 16th Century St. Basil’s Cathedral – one of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world – to the constructivist pyramid of  Lenin’s Mausoleum , Red Square is rich in symbols of Russia’s turbulent and intriguing past. Right at the Square there is one of the oldest and most remarkable shopping centers in Moscow – the GUM . Just several trading passages in Russia were created over a century ago and successfully operate until nowadays. GUM always was, and remains the greatest country’s store. To have some rest you can go to recently opened Zaryadye Park and enjoy breathtaking views of The Moscow Kremlin from the floating bridge, listen to some classic concerts or try local food from different regions of Russia.

2. NEAR THE BOLSHOI THEATRE
