Safari Zone
A Safari Zone (Japanese: サファリゾーン Safari Zone ) is a special Pokémon preserve where Trainers can enter and participate in the Safari Game (Japanese: サファリゲーム Safari Game ) to catch rare wild Pokémon .
Safari Zones can be found in the following regions :
- The Safari Zone in Kanto , located north of Fuchsia City .
- The Safari Zone in Johto , located north of Route 48 beyond the Safari Zone Gate in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver .
- The Safari Zone in Hoenn , located north of Route 121 .
- The Great Marsh in Sinnoh , located north of Pastoria City .

In the games
The mechanics of the Safari Zones are similar to each other. Most have a $ 500 entry fee, a step limit, a series of distinct areas with different wild Pokémon in each, and 30 Safari Balls , with which players may catch the Pokémon they come upon. The most important of their specific mechanics, however, is that Trainers do not initiate Pokémon battles with the wild Pokémon, but instead must catch them without battling them. The wild Pokémon within Safari Zones are capable of fleeing at any given time.
Differences between games
- The Johto Safari Zone has no step limit.
- In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire , the Hoenn Safari Zone does not use typical Safari Zone mechanics, instead functioning like normal routes .
- Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! effectively do not have a Safari Zone; the area that used to be the Safari Zone is replaced with GO Park , while the zoo area in front is referred to as the "Safari Zone" instead.
Similar examples
- Johto 's National Park is somewhat similar to a Safari Zone, being a nature preserve for Pokémon and having a thrice-weekly Bug-Catching Contest which shares several aspects with a Safari Game.
- Kalos 's Friend Safari area, located in Kiloude City , also bears some similarities with Safari Zones, differing in the available wild Pokémon (which are dependent on the Nintendo 3DS Friend Codes of other players) as well as allowing Poké Balls of any variety as opposed to solely Safari Balls.
- The Pal Park in all Generation IV games bears some superficial similarities to a Safari Zone, being a special area where only a specific type of Poké Ball can be used, featuring possible Pokémon species that otherwise cannot be found, and where the player cannot battle the Pokémon found there. Additionally, in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver , the Pal Park is placed in Fuchsia City where it replaces the Safari Zone.
- In Hisui , the Safari Zone was not yet established, but the main gameplay of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is similar to the Safari Zone.
Unova , Alola , Galar , Paldea , and Kitakami have neither a Safari Zone nor anything similar to or resembling a Safari Zone.
- In the Generation II games, there is some data for a beta Safari Zone in Fuchsia City , but it was ultimately unused.

Pastoria City Items in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Pastoria City Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Walkthrough
When you enter the city, you'll see the Pastoria Great Marsh Observatory Gate in the north. You can enter the Pastoria Great Marsh and take part in the Safari Game. There is a girl walking around with an umbrella here that will give you 3 Flora Stickers B to place on your Ball Capsule .
To the left is the Pokemon Center and the Pokemon Gym is just below and to the west. We'll come back to this later. Go south to explore more of the city. Head to the south and to the west, enter the house to the left of the Pokemart and you'll be given a berry. We receive a Babiri Berry.
To the right of the Pokemart, there's a building by the lake. If you find an item called a Heart Scale on your journey, be sure to come back and talk to the person inside. He will gladly take your Heart Scale and then teach your Pokemon old moves they've long since forgotten.
To the north of the last building, you can find some berries. We got 4 Persim Berries and 4 Nanab Berries. Other than this, there's very little else of interest. Visit the Pokemon Center to heal your Pokemon and save your game then we'll head back over to the Pastoria City Gym to earn the Fen Badge.'

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: Safari Zone Pokemon List
The Safari Zone/Great Marsh area in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl has a select list of Pokemon to search for day or night.
The Safari Zone has been a staple of mainline Pokemon games since the first games released in 1998. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl continue the tradition, except the designated zone is rebranded as the Great Marsh.
The Great Marsh is similar to many previous Safari Zones, but it has its unique differences in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl . The dedicated area has its own set list of Pokemon that can spawn within all 6 zones. The chances of encountering a specific character changes based on the time of day, whether the National Dex has been acquired, and a randomized potential daily encounter with one character from a binoculars sighting.
RELATED: Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: Grand Underground Pokemon List
Great Marsh Safari Zone Guide
There are a total of 31 Pokemon that can be caught in the Safari Zone/Great Marsh in Brilliant Diamond and 30 in Shining Pearl, with 8 only catchable after getting the National Dex from Professor Oak after beating the Elite Four . Arbok is exclusive to Brilliant Diamond players.
Trainers will start the Great Marsh Safari Zone after buying 30 Safari Balls and entering the area. They have unlimited time to explore, but the adventure ends when every Pokeball has been thrown, or 500 steps have been reached. Trainers don't battle, but instead must use bait and lure to alter the catch/flee rate. It is highly recommended to just throw a Safari Ball without using any Bait or Lure .
There are 14 Pokemon that can only be encountered after spotting them on the lookout binoculars located on the second floor of the Safari Zone building. This character is randomized daily, and ordinary random catches have the ability to appear in the binoculars for all 6 zones as well. So, there's no guarantee a character that can only be captured after spotting it with the binoculars will actually spawn.
The date/time on the Nintendo Switch can be manipulated (just like time traveling in Animal Crossing: New Horizons ) to simulate a new daily binoculars potential Pokemon encounter.

The following table details the full Safari Zone Pokemon list, along with exactly how to trigger an encounter, and whether they are available before or after getting the National Dex.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Get the Most Out of the Safari Zone
Trainers looking to complete their Pokédex in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will need to make the most of Pastoria City's Great Marsh.
The Pokémon series has a ton of different recurring elements that fans tend to either love or hate depending on the generation. For example, the frequently-present Safari Zone allows trainers to participate in a unique catching mini-game as they track down rare Pokémon. Generation IV's take on the Safari Zone, the Great Marsh, returns in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl 's Pastoria City and remains fairly unchanged from its original incarnation .
With the inclusion of the Grand Undergound's unique biomes and the Pokémon that appear there, the Great Marsh's less-varied Pokémon options may initially make it seem like little more than a fun distraction. However, there's still plenty of reason to check out Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl 's Safari Zone. With consistent Pokémon between both versions of the game and some notable rare creatures available, here are some things players should keep in mind to make the most out of their next Safari.

How the Great Marsh Works
In addition to limiting trainers to 500 steps and 30 Safari Balls for each visit, the Great Marsh features a unique catching system, as well as unique catch rates for the Pokémon who appear there. Typically, a Pokémon species has a set catch rate that determines how difficult they are to catch in the wild. In the Great Marsh, these numbers are either lowered or raised depending on the species. There's also a unique chance to flee statistic applied to Great Marsh Pokémon, who are not battled and cannot be weakened like other wild Pokémon.
While it is currently unclear if specific numbers have been adjusted for the remakes, in the original Diamond and Pearl , players had the best chance to catch Pokémon if they exclusively threw Safari Balls. While throwing bait or mud may seem useful on paper, players have found that just throwing Safari Balls gives the best chance at catching a Pokémon before they flee. While it may be a bit tedious to just spam a single option, players looking to get some of the rare finds in the Great Marsh should give this strategy a try.

Come with the Right Tools
While players can absolutely jump straight into the Great Marsh as soon as they step foot in Pastoria City, they won't be able to get the most out of the Safari Zone without the right tools. Certain Pokémon require the right field moves and key items to even encounter. Revisiting the Great Marsh with the ability to Surf and use the Super Rod will let trainers catch a far wider variety of Pokémon -- including some that make the Great Marsh worth visiting.
For example, Pokémon like Carvana and Whishcash can only be caught with a Super Rod. Whishcash is especially notable for being a fantastic defensive Pokémon with the always-powerful Water/Ground dual-typing. Having Surf and the Super Rod also opens the player up to the daily rotating Pokémon in water environments, provide even more opportunities and ways to encounter different kinds fo Pokémon.
Use the Binoculars Before Starting a Safari
Knowing which Pokémon are in the daily rotation and where certain ones are located can help players really make the most out of the time limit. To check the entire Great Marsh, players will have to spend 300 Poké Dollars to look through the binoculars on the second floor of the Great Marsh building. Some of these Pokémon really make the Safari worth the time and effort, particularly those who can only her caught here, and checking the binoculars can help players decide whether they should visit or wait for another day.

Keep an Eye Out for Useful Items
Long-time Pokémon fans will know that, wherever there's a Safari Zone, there are important items hidden inside. The Great Marsh in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is no different, as players can find some rare and unique items if they take the time to explore each zone. One of the Great Marsh's most important finds is the TM for Defog, a former HM move that greatly helps players traverse Route 210 and reach Celestic Town.
Outside of that, players can also find a Rare Candy, various Poké Balls, nuggets and different kinds of healing items scattered around the various areas. There's also a Toxic Plate located in Area 2 for players looking to collect every kind of plate in the game, plus various items that can be sold for Poké Dollars. It should be noted that Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl features Diamond and Pearl 's item layout, not Platinum 's.

How does the Great Marsh work in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
The Great Marsh is the Safari-Zone style area in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. This location is where you can go to find rare wild Pokemon (along with a few other items). You will be able to access the Great Marsh after reaching Pastoria City. It is located in the northern section of the city and will cost you 500 dollars to enter.
Before entering the Great Marsh, use the stairs to go up to the second floor of the building and use the telescopes. Each use of one will cost you 100 dollars, but it will also reveal the locations of some of the Pokemon found throughout the area. If you are looking for a specific Pokemon, you will want to check these out.
You can find the following Pokemon throughout the Great Marsh:
When you enter the Great Marsh, you will be given 30 Safari Balls. Like previous games that feature the Safari Zone, when you encounter a Pokemon, you will be given the option to throw a Safari Ball, throw bait, throw mud, or run. Once you run out of Safari Balls, your time in the Great Marsh will be over.
While inside the Great Marsh, be sure to talk with the NPC to the right of the entrance to obtain the TM Defog. This TM allows you to clear out foggy areas later in the game. You can also use the tram in the center of the Great Marsh to easily travel between the four areas.

This move is very important in order for you to progress through the game so don't forget to get this TM!
Great Marsh Guide and Mechanics
How to enter the great marsh.
You'll find a gate to the Great Marsh at the northern area of Pastoria City . You need to pay a ₽500 fee before you can enter the Great Marsh. Talk to the receptionist and pay the fee to receive 30 Safari Balls , which you can use to capture Pokemon inside the Great Marsh Safari Zone.
The session will end if you use up all 30 Safari Balls or take more than 500 steps.
Some Pokemon in the Great Marsh Change Daily
Six special Pokemon will appear everyday, one for each area of the Great Marsh. Take note that you may have the same special Pokemon for different areas . These six Pokemon change daily and some are exclusive to the Great Marsh.
To view the Daily Pokemon found in the Great Marsh, you can look through the binoculars on the second floor of the lobby. It will only show a random Pokemon from 5 of the areas in the Great Marsh, so you may need to look through it several times to find all six of your Daily Pokemon.
Changing the date on your Nintendo Switch will not affect the Daily Pokemon in the Great Marsh.
View Pokemon in the Great Marsh with Binoculars
You can view the Pokemon you can encounter in all the areas in the Great Marsh by going to the second floor of the lobby in the building and paying ₽100 to use the binoculars. All 3 Binoculars can scan the entire Great Marsh , so it does not matter which one you choose.
Each time you view the binoculars, you will be shown 5 Pokemon from 5 of the different areas in the Great Marsh. There is a chance that you could view one of your 6 Daily Pokemon from the binoculars. If you do not find any of your Daily Pokemon, you can pay another ₽100 to look through the binoculars again.
List of Great Marsh Binocular Backgrounds
The binoculars will show you Pokemon from 5 random areas of the Great Marsh, so it may be difficult to tell what area you are looking at through the binoculars. You can use this list of binocular backgrounds to find out what area each one corresponds to.
Throwing Ball, Bait, and Mud
While scouring for Pokemon in the Great Marsh, encounters inside the area will be different. When engaged in a Pokemon battle, your choices will be Ball, Bait, Mud, and Run.
Throwing Bait at a Pokemon will make the Pokemon more likely to runaway from the encounter, but makes it easier to catch the Pokemon.
On the other hand, throwing Mud at a Pokemon will make it harder to catch , but also decreases the chance that it flees the battle.
Throwing Safari Ball is the safest to catch Pokemon
Simply throwing a Safari Ball is the safest way to catch Pokemon in the Great Marsh, as it does not change any catch or flee rates of the Pokemon you will encounter.

Ride the Train to Travel Between Areas
Ride the train inside the Great Marsh to travel between locations quickly instead of navigating through the bogs and swamps of the areas. The train and the stations can be found in the middle of the Great Marsh.
Avoid Stepping in Bogs
Stepping in the bogs in the swampy areas of the Great Marsh will cause you to sink. You need to move around in order to get out of it, but that movement uses up the limited steps you're allotted inside the area.
Be sure to avoid these bogs to save up on steps, as you are only allowed to take 500 inside the Great Marsh.
Use Sweet Scent to not Waste Steps
While in the Great Marsh, you are only allowed to take up to 500 steps before the Safai Game ends. Instead of using those steps to walk around grass patches, you can bring a Pokemon with the move Sweet Scent . While standing in a patch of grass, use Sweet Scent to instantly encounter a Pokemon.

‘Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’ Are Bringing The Safari Zone Back
Featured Image Credit: Nintendo
With a month to go before Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl arrive on Nintendo Switch, the publisher revealed new gameplay footage, showing off some exciting new details about the Gen IV remakes. Beloved features return, but with some updates to keep things fresh. After all, it's been more than 15 years since players first explored the Sinnoh region.
First and foremost, the Great Marsh is back. This is Sinnoh's safari zone, and it still works much the same way. You pay your hard-earned Pokémon Dollars to enter, and you're given 30 Safari Balls to use. You also get bait to keep Pokémon from escaping, and you can hurl mud which makes them easier to catch. How rudely assaulting a creature makes them more agreeable to teaming up is beyond me, but let's not pull at that thread or the whole world of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl could unravel.
See the Great Marsh and more in this new gameplay video:
The Grand Underground makes a welcome return, too. This system of tunnels runs through the depths of Sinnoh, expanding as you progress through the game's story. Here, players can enjoy a mining minigame, where you dig for valuable items, such as evolutionary stones. Selling the items you don't want to keep is a very handy way of generating income, so be sure to mine often.
You can also make a base in the Grand Underground. You can decorate your secret refuge with cool Pokémon statues, but they do more than look good. They also affect which wild Pokémon appear in the Hideaways, new areas accessed via the subterranean world of Sinnoh. These isolated places are available in different biome forms, from lush meadows to arid deserts. Exactly which Pokémon can be found there is still a mystery at this time, but they look worth checking out.
Super Contests return. These events let trainers compete in a different way to the usual turn-based battle scenario we know and love. Instead, Pokémon will compete in a variety of minigames to prove they're the best in the Beauty, Cute, Cool, Smart or Tough category. As well as rounds based on aesthetic challenges, there's a rhythm game with adorable dancing. The whole thing is amazingly cute.
Poffins are back, too. To make them, you play a simple baking minigame. The aim is to stir your mix just right to make the best snack you can. Too fast and it will spill, but too slow and it'll burn. These sweet treats increase the contest stats of whichever Pokémon eat them, so think strategically about who gets what.
Not everything in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl is from the 2006 iterations. For one thing, you can now change your protagonist's outfit. There are a range of styles available, each with their own distinctive appearance. Just to note, they exist as full outfits, so not quite as customisable as we've seen in later games like Pokémon Sword & Shield . Still, it's a fun addition, all the same.
You can also pick a Pokémon to follow you around in the overworld. This mechanic has always been one of my favourite parts of the series, ever since the original Pokémon Yellow when Pikachu was your shadow. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are more akin to Pokémon Heart Gold & Soul Silver , as you can have any one of your companions following in your footsteps. Well, until you reach Amity Square, that is.
In short, it's clear Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are walking the line between honouring the past and embracing the modern. The chibi art style for the overworld is a cute callback to how things used to be, while still allowing for more detailed designs, not unlike Link's Awakening . When the battles start, graphics are closer to the Let's Go games, with more realistic human characters and detailed Pokémon models. It's an interesting contrast, especially given the full commitment to realistic style in the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus .
While I've yet to play Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl , what we've seen so far hints at a departure from Sword and Shield , which many fans will celebrate. After all, if you're going to look to the past, you may as well go all in.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl come to Nintendo Switch November 29, 2021.

Pokémon brilliant diamond & shining pearl: great marsh (safari zone) guide.
The Great Marsh is the safari zone of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, and it is filled with rare Pokémon to catch and items to find.
The Great Marsh is the safari zone of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl , and it is filled with rare Pokémon to catch and items to find. Safari zones in every Pokémon game are essentially mini-games in which players are presented with a limited number of Safari Balls to catch as many Pokémon as possible. Additionally, players are also presented with the challenge of being able to only walk a certain number of steps.
One of the defining features of the Great Marsh in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is the trolley system. The trolley system is a free means of transportation that takes players to various areas of the Great Marsh without costing them any of their limited 500 steps. It's also the easiest way to access Pokémon in certain areas. Once the National Dex is unlocked in Pokémon BDSP , trainers will want to make sure they take full advantage of the trolley system to access more rare Pokémon.

The Great Marsh is located in Pastoria City in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , and it's available at any time. To explore the Great Marsh, players will have to pay 500 Poké Dollars at the entrance counter. Additionally, players can pay another 100 Poké Dollars at the binoculars on the second floor of the same building to see which Pokémon are available in which area. New Pokémon are in the Great Marsh every day, and knowing which ones are located in which area is imperative to catch them all. The Defog HM in Pokémon BDSP is also located in the Great Marsh and is given out by an NPC with green hair to the right of the entrance.
Pokémon Encounters in the Great Marsh in Pokémon BDSP
Although the majority of encounters in the Great Marsh in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are for common Pokémon like Starly, Bibarel, and Wooper, players can find the rarer encounters rotating daily. Additionally, having fishing rods grants more access to purely aqua-based Pokémon like Magikarp and Barboach. The better the fishing rod players bring with them and use, the better the Pokémon they can catch. With a Super Rod, players can even catch Whiscash, Carvanha, and Gyarados in the Great Marsh. The Super Rod in Pokémon BDSP can be found by speaking with an NPC fisherman on Route 225.
Before receiving the National Dex, players can expect to find the following Pokémon through daily binocular encounters in the Great Marsh:

In the Pokémon series of games, Safari Zones are special unique areas in each game where rare Pokémon that don't appear anywhere else in the game can be caught. Safari Zones always operate with different rules than the rest of the game world - instead of battling Pokémon in the wild like you normally would, you'll need to carefully use baits and deterrents to get Pokémon to let down their guards so you can catch them. This can be quite challenging, so knowing the ins and outs of Safari Zone mechanics in each game is vital for success.
Navigating the Safari Zone
Fighting and capturing pokémon.
- Note that the "run away" option functions as normal, so we won't be discussing it.
- However, using bait will also make the Pokémon more difficult to catch in a safari ball. Thus, striking a balance here can be difficult — the longer you get the Pokémon to stick around for, the harder it will be to actually capture it.
- However, there's an important downside: using rocks will also make the Pokémon more likely to run away. In fact, after taking more than a few rocks, a Pokémon is virtually guaranteed to run away — some will exit the battle sooner. Thus, once again, using rocks means striking a delicate balance as you try to capture your Pokémon.
- Note that you only have a limited supply of safari balls (depending on the game, usually 30), so save them for Pokémon you want to catch. It's generally the best use of your time to use your safari balls for Pokémon that are only found in the safari zone.
- Note that safari balls are weak compared to the pokéballs you can use in the rest of the game. In addition to this, especially rare Safari Zone Pokémon are extra-difficult to catch. [2] X Research source This can lead to some very frustrating situations — for instance, it can easily take 20 or more tries to catch an exceptionally rare Pokémon like Clefairy.
General Tips
- Bulbapedia, an online user-supported Pokémon encyclopedia, has extensive information about each game's Safari Zone, including maps and guides covering where to look for the Pokémon in each zone. See the Bulbapedia Safari Zone article to get started. [3] X Research source
- Note that there is no step limit in the Safari Zone in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. [4] X Research source
- Across all of the games in the series, the entrance fee has stayed the same: 500 P . This includes the Great Marsh in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, which is not technically a Safari Zone but behaves very similarly.
- One smart strategy is to save your game before you enter the Safari Zone. This way, if you don't catch any Pokémon you want, you can re-load to avoid paying the entrance fee again.
- As an example of the sort of equation used in the games to determine whether certain Pokémon are captured, consider the equation from the Generation games (Gold and Silver): a = max((3 × HP max - 2 × HP current ) × rate modified / (3 × HP max ), 1) + bonus status where HP max is the Pokémon's maximum HP, HP current is the Pokémon's current HP, rate modified is the catch rate of the Pokémon modified by the ball used (every Pokémon and every ball modifies this in a certain way, and bonus status is the modifier for any status condition (sleep and freeze are 10, all others are 0). [5] X Research source When you throw a ball, a random number between 0 and 255 is generated. If this number is less than or equal to a, the Pokémon is caught.
Catching Pokémon in the Kanto Safari Zone
In the following sections, we'll highlight the rare Pokémon in each Safari zone and give specific advice where applicable. To keep these tables to a reasonable size, we've included only the rarest Pokémon in each area — for exhaustive information, consult the Safari Zone guides at Serebii.net and Bulbapedia.
Catching Pokémon in the Hoenn Safari Zone
Note that the Generation 4 Hoenn Safari Zone (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) won't be covered here as the player is allowed to engage in ordinary battles in this zone.
Catching Pokémon in the Sinnoh Great Marsh
Though Sinnoh's Pokémon preserve has a different name, it functions virtually identically to Safari Zones in other regions.
Catching Pokémon in the Johto Safari Zone
Note that the Safari Zone is not available in Generation 2 (Gold/Silver) but is available in the Generation IV games that visit Johto (HeartGold/SoulSilver). Note also that in this Safari Zone the player can arrange the six different areas in any arrangement desired. Finally, many of the areas in the Johto Safari Zones have Pokémon appearance rates that are not yet known — only data for the known areas has been included. See Bulbapedia for more information. Expert Q&A
- Once again, the data in the tables above only deals with the most noteworthy Pokémon in each area. In fact, many more Pokémon appear in each Safari Zone. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 2
- Remember — you have a limited number of steps inside the Safari Zone, not a limited amount of time. Thus, you can take as long as you like if you control your movement carefully. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 3
