Experts agree a supportive pillow is essential for travel. "The biggest issue many travelers experience when sleeping on a plane is that the seats don't recline enough," explains Dr. Alex Dimitriu, a sleep/wake and performance specialist who is dual board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine. "This often results in the head being just on the brink of tipping forward – which is not a comfortable sleeping position. Because of this insufficient recline, it is important to keep padding behind the head and neck minimal to reduce the tendency for the head to tip forward."

Most travel pillows are designed to be worn around the neck, providing enough support to prevent the head from tipping forward.

When shopping for a neck pillow for travel, experts recommend considering the following factors:

Proper head support:  What's most important is ensuring your head is supported in the right places by your travel pillow – and, in particular, not being pushed forward by excessive padding. "A good pillow would provide support for side sleeping, rather than a lot of padding behind the head, which just pushes the head forward too much," says Dimitriu.

Material: Consider both the external and internal material of the pillow:

External: Chiropractic physician Eric Smith advises to make sure the material of your travel pillow is breathable and won't subject you to an overheated sleep, since one of the main reasons for moving around a lot as you sleep is getting too hot. "When your face gets too hot on one side, even if you're sleeping, you're going to move from it because it's too warm," Smith explains.

There's no real consensus on which material is best for a cool, comfy sleep – and different people will have different preferences – so Smith's advice is to try before you fly (and don't hesitate to request a refund if your chosen pillow isn't working out).

• Internal: Memory foam pillows tend to offer more firm support – something Smith recommends for anyone, but especially older travelers. "The majority of patients I have that get older, we actually need a more firm pillow, we need a more firm bed, we need more support," Smith says. Pillows filled with microbeads mold more to the neck and head, while inflatable pillows can be adjusted to your preferences based on how much air you use to blow them up.

A travel pillow for your neck isn't considered a carry-on or personal item (and the same generally goes for small, loose items like jackets and umbrellas). That said, it's always best to review your airline's carry-on luggage size restrictions before traveling.

A good neck pillow for travel isn't the only key to achieving a decent sleep while in transit. "From the standpoint of evolution, we're kind of hardwired to be a little bit more on high alert in those situations," explains Rebecca Robbins, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and scientist at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. "We're a little bit more in fight or flight mode; our brain is subconsciously scanning the environment for threats and there are new sounds and new smells."

She recommends finding elements that are relaxing to you, which might include some of the following:

• Essential or aromatherapy oils: Scents like lavender and peppermint can be especially calming.

I Slept My Entire Red-eye Flight Thanks to this Comfy Blackout Eye Mask

While I like to think of myself as a pretty decent travel napper , I can honestly only claim that title because I create the ideal environment for sleep — no matter where I am. That equation, naturally, includes a good pillow, cozy loungewear, and the blackout eye mask that has changed the way I travel. 

Though I’ve tried eye masks for travel before, nothing compares to the cloud-like, blackout design from Ostrichpillow that I tested for the first time on a recent red-eye flight to Paris. The brand, whose claim to fame is its equally beloved on-the-go pillows, created an ergonomic 3D style that actually adapts to your face and blocks out light for a more restful, deeper sleep. Though my sleep typically feels disrupted on flights (if I can even fall asleep at all), I slept like a baby on my six-hour overnight trip. The material is a viscose, elastane, polyurethane, and nylon blend, and it’s so soft and cushioned that it feels like a pillow for your eyes. The weight of the mask is just light enough to feel comforting rather than constricting. Its breathable design also includes space around the eyes so you can comfortably open them while you’re still wearing it. Typical neck pillows don’t offer adequate neck support. This results in waking up with aches, strains and a haze of exhaustion that makes you question if you slept at all. As a result, we based the POD’s neck pillow off of a neck brace, and then dialed it back down a bit for a cushiony, supportive feel for optimal sleep no matter your neck size and shape.

Conde Nast described the POD like being inside a mini sensory deprivation tank . This was the goal. Research has shown that we don’t typically get great sleep when traveling because we’re not in our own space / environment. Makes sense—you probably sleep better in the privacy of your own bedroom (on your Pluto Pillow ) than, let’s say, on a massive metal vehicle that hurls through the sky at 550 mph.

A number of our customers have shared that they weren't aware that the suede snaps (yes, real suede!) on the back of the hoodie not only serve as a function to store the POD, but that they also snap onto each other for a tighter, snugger fit (especially if you have a smaller head). This also makes the eye mask cover just the eyes instead of coming down around the face – though, the latter feels incredibly comfy :)

That said, with the hoodie up and in use, our goal was to create a bit more warmth – your own little capsule and cocoon. When designing and developing the product, most travelers we interviewed actually shared that they tend to run cold on flights. "You can always adjust the cool a/c but not warmth," was a common take – so that was something we kept in mind (with the ability to still push the hoodie back for more temperature regulation). The POD is meant to be used and is easy to care for. Everything touching outer surfaces is machine washer friendly. To wash the POD: Carefully unzip the neck support cushion and remove the foam (the foam will disintegrate in the wash!). Machine wash cold on a delicate cycle without other articles to prevent damage. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. When that's done, air dry flat and place the support foam back inside the cover.

What are the benefits of travel pillows.

Whether your airplane seat is too small or your bus ride endures several bumps, it may be difficult to relax on a long trip. Add noisy conversations and frequent overhead announcements and you have multiple barriers in your way to getting a good nap.

One of the main reasons people struggle to sleep while traveling — especially on international flights with time changes — is because they’re trying to sleep at a time with “low circadian and homeostatic drive” (a time when they would not normally sleep, so they’re not as tired), says Dr. Andrew Varga, a board-certified physician at The Mount Sinai Integrative Sleep Center . The other factor, according to Varga, is the sleeping space, which is usually cramped and doesn’t let you lie recumbent or change positions, except in typically pricey business- and first-class cabins.

“Not everyone is an equally deep sleeper, and people with any sleep issues at baseline will often have a harder time sleeping in a louder and less comfortable environment — such as an airplane,” says board-certified psychiatrist and sleep medicine specialist Dr. Alex Dimitriu . He noted that posture plays a big role in the discomfort we feel — and as anyone who has slept on a plane knows, “the head tends to fall off to the side or forward, which is both uncomfortable and can cause neck pain, and [can] even make breathing less efficient.”

“Sleeping upright is not at all a natural position,” says Dr. Mayank Shukla , a board-certified pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist in New York City. “Our head weighs almost 10 pounds and flops around the neck when sleeping upright, leading to aches and pain with all that muscle strain.”

Experts noted that travel pillows can provide support for the neck and head, alleviating some pain and discomfort when combating an upright sleeping position while traveling. They’re typically portable, lightweight, ergonomically designed and come in different sizes to fit every type of person, plus some have additional high-tech features like temperature regulation. This is an ideal tool for frequent flyers who hope to maintain a semi-regular sleeping schedule.

What to consider when buying a travel pillow

The best travel pillow is one that you find the most comfortable to use for extended periods of time. Ideally, Dimitriu recommended testing out the pillow beforehand to see whether it’s comfortable and how it changes shape.

“The emphasis for most users should be to see how comfortably the pillow lets you rest with your back to the seat and without your head falling forward,” he says. And while larger pillows tend to provide more cushioning, he noted “airplane seats are tight, and there is such a thing as too much pillow.”

Below, we highlighted two of the most important considerations when shopping for travel pillows: inflatability and portability.

Inflatable vs. non-inflatable

When going on a long-haul trip, most travelers don’t want another thing to lug around. “Inflatable pillows may allow for more cushion and can fold to a smaller size,” Dimitriu says, adding that they won’t take up too much space in your luggage. They’re also typically more adjustable — you can change the amount of air to get more or less firmness, depending on your comfort level.

Non-inflatable travel pillows include various types of filling material including memory foam, polyester fiberfill and microbeads. While the different materials can make it easier to find a more comfortable fit, non-inflatable pillows tend to be bulkier than inflatable ones. When it comes to cleaning, both inflatable and non-inflatable pillows typically have removable covers that you can machine wash or spot clean.

Portability

If you’re on a multipart journey or backpacking through Europe, for example, the size and portability of your travel pillow may be just as important off a plane as it is on it. Some travel pillows have straps that you can attach to your luggage, while with others you can fold to fit inside a small bag.

This Travel Pillow Is Like Being Inside a Mini Sensory Deprivation Tank

In my younger years, a transatlantic red-eye flight in coach posed no greater problem than wondering what kind of music I should stock my iPod with. Armed with the airline-issued “pillow,” I could fall asleep within minutes, only to somehow wake up actually refreshed upon touching down in Rome .

Sadly, those days are behind me, and I now travel with an arsenal of products to help me eke out a few hours of rest on a long-haul flight. I’ll pop gummy melatonin before boarding, swaddle myself in  an oversized plane blanket , and then attempt to block out all exterior stimuli with  a heavy-duty eye mask and  construction-grade earplugs . The final element is a neck pillow. Without it, I find myself jerking awake whenever my head lolls forward, which is about every 15 minutes. (I’m a blast as a seatmate, if you couldn’t tell.)

And while I’ve found stellar eye masks and blankets over the years, the platonic ideal of a neck pillow had eluded me until recently. Most were not supportive enough for sleeping, or could only be used to rest your head on one side. But one day, while scrolling through Instagram, the  Pluto Pod popped up. More than just a neck pillow, the Pod also boasts a lightly structured and padded hood, as well as a pull-down eye mask. Do you resemble a bobble-headed, 1950s-style alien when you wear it? Yes, you do. Is it, by far, the best travel pillow I’ve used? Absolutely.

The pillow is the result—like many wonderful recent innovations—of curious people with time to kill during the pandemic. Susana Saeliu, founder and CEO of Pluto Pillow, spent a lot of 2020 daydreaming about when she might be able to fly again. And, after successfully launching  a unique sleep pillow , she wanted to try her hand at a travel version. Pluto partnered with lauded design firm IDEO to create it, and received a lot of valuable feedback from focus groups made up of flight attendants and frequent travelers. “It was like one big therapy session,” Saeliu says. “They groused about how tiring traveling is, and that the travel pillow options today are a mess of tradeoffs that fall short. Pillow A might be comfortable, but it’s not portable. Pillow B is portable, but it’s not comfortable. And on and on.” The result of these sessions and many prototypes is the slightly wacky-looking but supremely comfortable Pod.

The pillow has helped me cut down on my sleeping tools. With the Pod, I can eschew ear plugs and an eye mask because the padded hood dampens noise and the flip-down eye mask blocks almost all light. Sleeping with one is like being inside a mini sensory deprivation tank, except you don’t have to worry about getting wet. The first time I used it, I passed out  in the morning for a solid two hours on my way to  Nemacolin in Western Pennsylvania. It’s also worth noting that if you’re wearing a face mask, it’s a lot more comfortable to use this pillow’s built-in eye mask than a traditional over-the-head model. Since Pod’s mask is not pressed up against your eyes, it’s much easier to breathe through the face mask.

While the blackout hood is what obviously makes this pillow different from its competitors, I have also found the neck piece of the Pod to be better structured than other models. First, it wraps around your neck completely and securely thanks to the extra-wide band of Velcro fastening. This means that whatever position your neck lands in after you fall asleep, your head will have a sturdy surface to lean on (and the padding in the hood makes leaning against a window much more cozy). Plus, compared to other brands that might be stuffed with lightweight polyfill, the performance foam in Pod never loses its shape. And when your flight is over, the whole pillow neatly folds in on itself, making it easy to stuff in your backpack or attach to the handles of your suitcase .

As I write this, I’m in the middle of packing for a trip to  Secret Bay on the island of Dominica . I believe this will be my pillow’s third country on its passport, and certainly not its last. Do I probably get a few strange looks while I sleep peacefully inside the Pluto Pod? My guess is yes, but you know what? I couldn’t even see them if I tried.
