Meeting records fall and surprise winners shine in nairobi.

World leads were set, meeting records fell and some major upsets happened at the Kip Keino Classic, this season's third World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, in Nairobi on Saturday (13).

Rising stars surprised their more experienced rivals in the men's distance races, with Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Reynold Cheruiyot among the winners.

Wanyonyi, who won a world U20 title on the same track in 2021, made the stadium errupt after he won a battle with Wycliffe Kinyamal in the men's 800m, clocking a world-leading PB of 1:43.32 that also improved the meeting record by more than a second. Kinyamal was second in 1:43.66, while 2019 world 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot finished third in 1:44.99.

In the men's 1500m, world U20 champion Reynold Cheruiyot ran a world-leading 3:32.01 – at altitude – to upset Abel Kipsang, the world indoor bronze medallist and African champion, who finished second in 3:32.70. Vincent Keter ran 3:36.92 for third.

Amos Kirui won the men's 3000m steeplechase in 8:18.45 ahead of Abraham Kibiwott in 8:19.71 and Leornard Bett in 8:20.02.

To warm up the already warm track on a sunny afternoon was an exciting climax to the men's 10,000m that was won by Daniel Ebenyo. Edwin Seko saw Ebenyo stretching the gap with four laps to go. The two broke away from the rest of the field and appeared to communicate before the latter suddenly surged forward. Ebenyo won in 28:09.93 and Seko was second in 28:30.05 as he managed to hold off a strong-finishing Stanley Njihia who was third in 28:30.61.

Six women were together at the bell in the women's 5000m. With 200m to go, Kenya's world cross country champion and world 5000m silver medallist Beatrice Chebet sprinted to the finish line to win in 15:15.85 ahead of Margaret Chelimo and Judith Kiyeng.

"It was my first race this season, and I'm longing for a better year because I was here to test my speed and endurance," said Chebet, who also claimed Commonwealth Games and Diamond League titles in 2022. "I believe with many races ahead, I shall be able to shape up my season."

Another home win was secured by world bronze medallist Mary Moraa, the 2022 Diamond League winner and Commonwealth Games champion. The last 150m turned into a battle between Moraa and Netsanet Desta of Ethiopia, as the pair broke away from the rest of the field, but Moraa pulled clear with 50m to go to win in 1:58.83.

She danced to the crowds; not so much because she had just run the World Championships qualifying time as she was already qualified courtesy of being the Diamond League champion, but the dance was probably in response to the cheers from the fans.

Desta came second in 2:00.14, while Vivian Chebet Kiprotich was third in a PB of 2:00.54.

Within the first 1000m of the women's 3000m steeplechase, Kenya's world record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech had already left a single file of runners behind her and world U20 champion Faith Cherotich followed in hot pursuit. The gap between the two stretched, then shrunk, but the order remained the same as Chepkoech crossed the finish line in 9:13.51 and Cherotich followed in 9:15.08, one place ahead of Commonwealth Games champion Jackline Chepkoech in 9:25.63.

During the pre-event press conference, world indoor champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine promised to jump two meters, and she managed it to set a world lead and win the women's high jump event. Mahuchikh has now cleared a bar at two metres or higher 36 times in her career so far.

Laura Zialor of Great Britain finished second with 1.90m, with another Ukrainian athlete, Kateryna Tabashnyk, jumping 1.86m to finish third.

Upsets began with the men's javelin throw when Timothy Herman of Belgium threw a national record of 87.35m to win the event. A big PB, it improved his previous best of 80.48m set in 2019. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters from Grenada threw 85.72m to finish second, while Egyptian Ihab Abdelrahman, the winner of last year's event, finished third with a throw of 81.04m. Home favourite Julius Yego threw 77.24m to finish fifth.

"The Kenyan people are crazy, and I'm impressed. I will definitely come back next year," said Herman, who was in Nairobi for the second time after competing at the 2021 edition, when he threw 77.73m to finish third. "I didn't expect to win here today, but I'm excited, and this was due to good preparations. I still have some more throws ahead of the World Championships, where I'm eyeing a title."

Wojciech Nowicki of Poland started his journey towards his desire to win the only gold medal missing from his cabinet – the World Championships title – after he threw a world lead of 79.78m in the men's hammer throw. Ethan Katzberg of Canada took second place with 76.38m, while Donat Varga of Hungary finished third with 74.12m.

Janee Kassanavoid's first throw of 74.25m gave her the win in the women's hammer as she finished ahead of her US compatriot Janeah Stewart. Stewart's second throw of 71.43m put her ahead of Poland's world record-holder Anita Wlodarczyk – contesting her first competition since last June following injury – who ended up third with a 70.27m throw.

In the sprints, USA's Twanisha Terry ran a wind-assisted 10.86 (2.5m/s) to win the women's 100m, while Zoe Hobbs of New Zealand finished second in 10.97. Belgium's Rani Rosius was third in 11.08.

Sha'Carri Richardson produced a spectacular show in the women's 200m, leading her compatriots in a US top three with a meeting record run of 22.07 (1.7m/s). Kyra Jefferson finished second in 22.77, with Shannon Ray running a personal best of 22.82 in third.

Canada's Aaron Brown prevented another US win in the men's 200m as he won in 20.12 ahead of Kyree King in 20.18 and Liberia's Joseph Fahnbulleh in 20.19.

Zambia's world leader Muzala Samukonga ran a meeting record of 44.25 to win the men's 400m. USA's Vernon Norwood finished second in 44.68, with France's Gilles Biron narrowly missing the World Championships qualification time but getting rewarded with a personal best of 45.52 in third.

The event's climax was the men's 100m as Ferdinand Omanyala delighted the home crowd – who were already up on their feet minutes before the gun went off – by running a world-leading 9.84 (-0.5m/s). USA's Kenny Bednarek ran 9.98 to finish second ahead of his compatriot Marvin Bracy-Williams, who clocked 10.03.

Nairobi News

Kanye west eyes nairobi’s nyayo stadium for 2024-25 world tour.

Music enthusiasts across East Africa will be excited to learn that Kanye West is contemplating including the Kenyan capital in his upcoming world tour, slated for 2024-25.

With tentative dates spanning from June 2024 to February 2025, the tour is set to hit major cities across the globe, with Nairobi featuring prominently among the potential venues.

The Instastory shared by Kanye West himself unveiled a list of cities set to be graced by the iconic artist, with Nairobi standing out as a potential hotspot for the tour.

The tour routing, as detailed in the Instastory, encompasses a diverse range of locations including Toronto, New York, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Madrid, Cairo, London, Dubai, and more.

Nairobi finds itself in an esteemed company alongside other global metropolises like Lagos, Sydney, Melbourne, and Tokyo.

While the Nyayo Stadium has been earmarked as the venue of choice for Kanye’s Nairobi leg, event pundits have pointed out that the larger Kasarani Stadium might better accommodate the anticipated throngs of concert-goers.

The Main Stadium at Kasarani has a sitting capacity of 60,000 while Nyayo National Stadium’s capacity is about 30,000. The seating arrangements are comfortable and afford the spectators a nice view of the field and the track.

Netizens have been buzzing with excitement, speculating about the potential impact of Kanye’s presence on the local music scene.

In a viral video, Kanye West is seen appealing for assistance in securing additional arenas, stating, “We just sold out the United Center in minutes.” He then implores, “It is the only arena I had access to last year and when I call, they tell me it is not available for me and you know what that is. So if there is anyone out there who can help with this, please do.”

Social media has been ablaze with suggestions for unconventional venues, with users proposing locations such as the Great Wall of China, Corcovado, and the Giza Pyramids.

Kanye West wrote in another social media post, “I have not been allowed to perform in a year. Feels like the Elvis Presley movie.”

However, amidst the excitement surrounding the tour, questions linger about sponsorship opportunities given Kanye’s recent controversies, including allegations of antisemitism.

Nevertheless, anticipation continues to build as Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign prepare to release their joint album, “Vultures,” with a listening party scheduled at Chicago’s United Center on February 8, 2024.

The event promises attendees a unique opportunity to experience the album alongside the artists and collaborators before its public release.

7 Days Bigfive Safari - Nairobi Tour

7 Days Bigfive Safari - Nairobi

Let me start with our guide, Dennis. He was excellent and very knowlegable. He was all for his 'clients (or new family as he called us)". He made sure we had the most vantage point to take pictures of the animals and would do his best to find where wildlife was located to by using his VHF radio and get us there. Very polite and respectful. This is what made our safari experience 'excellent'. He had the intution of knowing how the animal was going to behave or which way they were going to move and got us there for the best pictures. The whole experience was great. I wish our vehicle was a little more adaptive to the rough terrain in the parks, but then, it wasn't bad either. There were times we felt that we were being taken to all of these curio shops for a purpose other than a rest stop. Be aware that the prices of items at the curio shops are negotiable - by up to 30-40%. On the whole, we enjoyed our trip and I would recommend it to anybody. Instead of the 5 parks that we did in 7 days, I would suggest only 3-4 parks so that you can have a more relaxed pace. The drive between each park can be very tiring and boring (4-6 hours!!) and you are always living out of partially opened suitecases.

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

Good day. We would like to express gratitude the SCS Company, represented by John and Simon, for a fantastically prepared and conducted nine-days safari in August 2021 on Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Amboseli, Tsavo West, Tsavo East National parks! The guys are really professionals in their field! Simon is an excellent guide and a professional driver! He is very friendly, polite and punctual. He knows national parks perfectly well and masterfully finds and notices wild animals. We are also very grateful for the stories and providing information about animals and birds, as well as about the country and Africa as a whole! It was very nice to explore the parks and watch the wild world with you! We saw all the animals from the “Big five” and not only, many stunning bird species, indescribable views and landscapes of African nature, fantastic sunsets and sunrises, stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

What people love about Kenya Tours from Nairobi

I went with my daughter on a safari. Our contact with Bryan of Bigzone was very good. Quick replies whenever I had a question. We had a private tourguide named Samuel Muthee. Sammy was helping us with everything we asked for. Having 2 women on board we had to frequently stop for a washroom visite and Sammy always knew where it was clean to go. Also we trusted him making the right dicisions and showing us the way. The last day we would have to wait for 10 hours on the airport and Sammy was already 7 days on our side he came up with solutions what to do and stayed with us. Great time with Sammy! The lodges were very different in luxury. Only Lake Naivasha was very beautifull, clean and very good restaurant. The rest of the accomodations were not that clean unfortunatly.
My 6 day safari with Bon Voyage Safaris to Maasai Mara and Serengeti was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The professionalism, expertise, and passion displayed by the staff, coupled with the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife, made it an experience beyond compare. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safaris to anyone seeking an unforgettable safari experience in East Africa.

Set on the city’s southern outskirts, Nairobi National Park (at 117 sq km, it’s one of Africa’s smallest) has abundant wildlife which can, in places, be viewed against a backdrop of city skyscrapers and airliners coming in to land – it’s the only national park on earth that borders a capital city. Remarkably, the animals seem utterly unperturbed by it all.

Nairobi National Park has acquired the nickname ‘Kifaru Ark’, a testament to its success as a rhinoceros (kifaru in Kiswahili) sanctuary. The park is home to the world’s densest concentration of black rhinoceros (over 50). But even proximity to Kenya’s largest city couldn’t prevent poachers from killing one of the park’s rhinos in August 2013. It was the first such attack in six years.

Lions and hyenas are also commonly sighted within the park; park rangers at the entrance usually have updates on lion movements. You’ll need a bit of patience and a lot of luck to spot the park’s resident cheetahs and leopards. Other regularly spotted species include gazelle, warthog, zebra, giraffe, ostrich and buffalo.

The park’s wetland areas also sustain approximately 400 bird species, which is more than in the whole of the UK.

Ivory Burning Monument

Not far inside the park’s main Langata Road Gate, the Ivory Burning Monument marks the spot where, in 1989, Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi burnt 12 tons of ivory at a site near the main gate. This dramatic event improved Kenya’s conservation image at a time when East African wildlife was being decimated by relentless poaching.

Getting There & Around

Apart from the main entrance, which lies 7km from the CBD, there are other gates on Magadi Rd and the Athi River Gate; the latter is handy if you’re continuing on to Mombasa, Amboseli or the Tanzanian border. The roads in the park are passable with 2WDs, but travelling in a 4WD is never a bad idea, especially if the rains have been heavy.

Unless you already have your own vehicle, the cheapest way to see the park is on the park shuttle, a big KWS bus that leaves the main gate at 2pm on Sunday for a 2½-hour tour. You need to book in person at the main gate by 1.30pm. There was talk of this service being discontinued so ring ahead to avoid disappointment.

In Kenya, Seeing the Sites by Dhow

The wooden boats, whose triangular sails create a distinctive silhouette, are used up and down the East African coast.

A couple of people riding on a low wooden sailboat, its large sail unfurled, on cerulean waters at sea.

By Ginanne Brownell

Reporting from Lamu, Kenya

There’s just something about a lager at sunset.

As we headed toward Pate Island by dhow, the traditional sailboat that is ubiquitous up and down the East African coast, the captain popped open my Tusker, a Kenyan beer, and passed around beef and vegetarian samosas. I settled back on large overstuffed white cushions, munched on the savory treats and reflected that life was always better with a sundowner.

Just about a half hour earlier at Manda Bay , the posh rustic resort on Manda Island where we were staying, I had donned the colorful plaid kikoy wrap I had bought the day before and my partner put on his swim trunks so we could wade out into the Indian Ocean and climb aboard the dhow, which comfortably carried the captain, his mate and the two of us.

Dhows have sailed the Indian Ocean for thousands of years, their triangular sails creating distinctive silhouettes. Made of woods such as teak and mahogany, the vessels vary in size from small fishing boats to spacious versions more than 100 feet long.

As for Manda Bay, the Italian musician Bruno Brighetti originally opened it in the 1960s as the Blue Safari Club. It was sold to Kenyans more than two decades ago. Now its thatched roof bungalows, with wooden bed swings on the porches, line a vast, private sandy beach (beachside rooms are $540 a night for single occupancy).

It takes about an hour to fly from Nairobi to the tiny Manda Island airport, then porters carry your bags out to the dock for a 30-minute boat ride to the resort on the island’s northern shore. Everyone from wealthy South African tech executives to members of the British aristocracy have stayed here over the years. (Lady Viola Grosvenor, a sister of the Duke of Westminster — who owns a good portion of London’s Mayfair neighborhood — married the son of the Kenyan owners in 2022, and part of their wedding celebrations were held at Manda Bay).

Mention a trip to Kenya and most people probably think “safari.” But staying at Manda Bay has a whole different vibe. In addition to dhow cruises around the mangrove-studded archipelago — which includes Manda Island, Lamu Island, Pate Island and the smaller islands of Kiwayu and Manda Toto — there are relaxed days by the pool; snorkeling on a nearby reef; day trips to Lamu Town and the village of Shela, both on Lamu Island; sailboats and kayaks to borrow; and offers of inshore and deep-sea fishing expeditions.

Aside from the fishing, we had just about done everything else during our week here when we decided to take a sunset cruise. During it, we asked to visit Pate Island, home to the ruins of the village of Shanga, which archaeologists say was first established in the eighth century.

Our boat captain explained that the island is most accessible at high tide, which we would miss. Plus, by the time we arrived, the sun would have set, and finding the village in the dark would be very difficult.

But as we sailed near, he pointed out some features and regaled us with tales about the island. One was the story of a Chinese ship , filled with goods including porcelain, that was wrecked off the coast of Pate in the 1400s. Descendants of the survivors are said to still inhabit parts of the island, and the silversmiths in Lamu Town insist that the porcelain set into their necklaces and earrings are fragments that still wash ashore today.

As we watched the pinks and oranges of sunset dance across the shifting cerulean blue sky, we admitted we weren’t heartbroken to miss the Shanga site because we already had seen some ruins the previous evening.

On the way to a hilltop sundowner on the resort’s property, our guide, a gap year student whose paternal great-grandfather was the renowned Kenyan paleontologist Louis Leakey, had taken us past the remains of Manda Town, a settlement said to have been founded in the ninth century. (There are historic ruins up and down this Swahili coast archipelago, including what remains of the village of Takwa, on the island’s southern side.)

Manda Town now is filled with the remains of stone and lime-mortar buildings, including a mosque’s ornate mihrab, the wall niche that indicates the direction of Mecca. In the 1960s, archaeologists determined that some of the structures included bricks likely brought to the area as ballast in ships from Oman.

Walking around the ruins covered in overgrown prickly vegetation, not far from what our guide said was a 1,000-year-old baobab tree, I imagined what this town had been like at its peak in the 13th century, when about 3,500 people are believed to have lived there.

This stay at Manda Bay was my third trip to the archipelago — and my second time traversing its waters by dhow. On my first visit here, in 2019, I stayed at the Italian-owned Majlis Resort , a property on Manda Island designed in the Swahili architectural vernacular and featuring intricately carved wooden doors and beds (a junior suite starts around $530 a night, depending on the season).

I had taken a day cruise on the hotel’s dhow and had been fascinated to watch the junior captain climbing onto a wooden part of the mast to hoist the sail, which had a woman’s portrait painted on one side, and watched as it unfurled and instantly caught a gust of wind. As I lounged at the boat’s bow — this one had red pillows — we passed jovial fishermen on brightly painted boats who showed off their catch.

After we had rounded the southernmost tip of Lamu Island, we stopped by a secluded beach where I snorkeled, and then had a seafood lunch on a beach dotted with a handful of luxury vacation villas . Since the area first became popular with the expat crowd in the 1960s, Princess Caroline of Monaco , Sting, the actor Dominic West , the Dutch filmmaker Anton Corbijn and the makeup entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury all have owned or rented properties on the island.

After lunch, we spent the afternoon sailing around the rest of the island, passing the small, serene fishing village of Matondoni, which is known as a center of dhow construction and where both of the dhows I have been on were crafted. Soon enough, as we got near Lamu Town, our tranquillity was interrupted by the hustle and bustle of boats dropping off supplies and passengers at the docks and local children jumping in the water for a late afternoon dip.

The day before, the hotel had arranged a guide for my walking tour of Lamu Town. This community of about 15,000 is the best maintained of the Swahili towns along the East African coast, and includes an Old Town that is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

After visiting Lamu Museum and the Donkey Sanctuary (which cares for donkeys that are ill or too old to work), we headed into the maze of alleyways lined with shops selling goods from locally made fabrics to kiti cha jeuri chairs, wooden seats accented with panels of woven string. We ended our tour in the small market square where fruit and vegetable sellers hawked fresh mangos and avocados while local men in bright sarongs and kufi caps caught up on the day’s gossip.

Shela, a small village on Lamu, is less hectic than Lamu Town and has a more cleaned up feel, with a number of small art galleries, a few upscale boutiques like Aman , which sells hand loomed cotton clothing at European prices, and private homes owned by wealthy Kenyans and foreigners that have been lovingly — and expensively — renovated.

It is also home to the storied Peponi Hotel . Opened in the late 1960s by Wera and Aage Korschen, over the decades that hotel has gained something of a bohemian reputation and its cocktail hour is the place to see and be seen. (After my dhow excursion, I enjoyed a cocktail named dawa — Swahili for medicine — made with vodka, honey and lime.) Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall visited in the 1970s and since then Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and the Obamas have been among those who popped by for a visit.

On New Year’s Day every year, the hotel hosts a dhow race that is a social highlight for both holidaymakers and locals. Our dhow captain on my most recent sail told us he came in third among the 11 locally made boats.

We missed the race though, as we were too busy lazily lounging poolside in wooden swings, watching the world go by.

2024 WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha

The WRC Safari Rally is a major sporting event in Kenya, expected to draw large crowds and significantly increase traffic volume.

This year’s Safari Rally has been moved up to the Easter slot and is now the third round of the 2024 FIA WRC following the opening two races in Monaco and Sweden.

The event which marks its 71st staging in the country will be officially flagged-off by President William Ruto at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Thursday 28 before traversing the Rift Valley.

A formidable roster of 29 participants, hailing from various corners of the globe, stands ready to conquer the demanding course and strive for victory in the competitions.

Esteemed drivers, including Thierry Neuville from the Hyundai Shell Mobis team, who currently leads the championship standings, and Adrien Fourmax of M-Sport Ford, are set to showcase their skills in the Safari Rally with hopes of securing crucial championship points.

Furthermore, on Monday Safaricom injected Ksh36 million towards driver Hamza Anwar (Sh5m), with the balance being channeled towards provision of internet connectivity at the media center.

Afrobeats star Davido to sue over April Fools’ article about drug arrest

world tour nairobi

Afrobeats musician Davido is seeking legal action against a media outlet that published a fake news report on April Fools’ Day claiming he had been “detained” after a “cocaine haul” was “found in his private jet.”

The article was published on April 1 by K24, a TV station in Kenya. The report falsely claimed the three-time Grammy nominee was “apprehended by the Anti-Narcotics Police Unit” on March 31 after a search of his private jet at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Kenya’s directorate of criminal investigations took to X in an effort to dispel the false allegations, branding the story “fake news.” Davido said the untrue reports had led to “a barrage of calls,” and that while he had indeed been traveling — returning from his East African tour — “I have never been arrested by anyone in any country for any crime in the world.”

The K24 report made several false, headline-grabbing claims about large amounts of cocaine being hidden on the aircraft and other allegations of illegal drug use. The news outlet updated the article later on April 1, writing in a photo caption: “This article is fictitious and only meant for April Fools’ Day. Are you fooled?” The outlet has since deleted the story.

“I want to assure my fans that these reports are entirely untrue,” Davido, who has become a global ambassador for Afrobeats and the Afropop landscape, said in a social media post Tuesday.

The 31-year-old, whose real name is David Adedeji Adeleke, called the article “extremely irresponsible” regardless of it being published on April Fools’ Day, and said he had instructed his legal team to take action.

K24 and the author of the report did not immediately return a request for comment Wednesday.

Around the world on April Fools’ Day, many including brands, companies and celebrities issue false or misleading statements in a bid to entertain the public — sometimes backfiring spectacularly in the process.

But for news organizations to get involved with April Fools’ Day by publishing fake news, at a time when interest in the media is dwindling, is a “truly bad idea,” Craig Robertson from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said in an interview Wednesday.

“Why deliberately undermine trust in your own publication by posting a fake ‘joke’ story?” he said. “It will just make people question all the other stories you posted on April 1, and perhaps all your other content in general.”

Robertson, whose focus is on news trust and credibility, noted that media outlets “have enough of a struggle trying to gain the public’s trust,” especially at a time when there is “so much public discussion around fake news and AI manipulation, as well as low public trust in news.”

Robertson said he had an “inkling” that a news outlet might “be irresponsible enough” to jump on the April 1 bandwagon, but that it was “baffling” a media organization would “post a fake story about something so serious.”

“I don’t know if there was ever a time when you could do a fake April Fools’ story responsibly, but it’s definitely not in 2024,” he said. “Implicating someone in a serious crime just isn’t funny.”
