Finance Jobs Abroad

Once upon a time, New York and London were the places to be if you were looking for a job in finance. While these two cities remain at the top of lists for many financiers, the rapidly changing landscape of the global economy has caused others to move away and take advantage of the immense opportunity elsewhere. New global financial hubs are gaining in relevance everyday all over the globe, posing even better options for finance jobs abroad.

Finance has become far from a centralized professional field. In the current interconnected state of the global economy you can find important nodes of economic activity in pretty every major region of the globe. Many financiers find it more profitable to move abroad to emerging markets, where the payoff can be great if the game is played right. Cultural and linguistic differences may make the transition challenging, but every finance professional knows that without risk, there can be no reward.

Most of the world’s most important financial centers are located in North America, Europe, and East Asia. These are the wealthiest regions of the world, with the most advanced economies, so it makes sense that many finance professionals would flock to the major cities of these countries when looking for finance jobs abroad.

First, the United States ; New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and Washington D.C. are the leading financial cities in the world’s most powerful country. In Europe , London, Zurich, Geneva, Luxembourg, and Frankfurt play a similarly prestigious role. These cities attract the best of the best in the West, so if you really know your stuff, there is opportunity for big payoffs in any of these places.

Next is Asia . Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Seoul have all emerged as huge centers of economic activity over the course of the last century. Asia has the largest markets in the world, and many believe that China will soon take over as the world’s premier economic superpower. Either way, Asia is a fantastic place to find finance jobs abroad, as it is a land of great economic opportunity.

Many finance professionals have also taken their services to the developing world, in search of finance jobs in new emerging markets . Cities such as Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Sao Paulo, and Panama City are all financial hotspots that many peg as the next big economic center. In the end it is only up to you where you want to place your stakes!

There are a few ways to go about securing a finance job abroad. The first choice of many is to find a job at home, and then request a transfer to an international office. This may take time and patience to achieve, but if you put in the hard work required for an international company to consider your request, then it is very much a possibility.

Another method is to look for work directly in the country where you wish to find a job abroad, which is a bit more challenging to accomplish. Almost any country will require you to possess some sort of work permit and residential visa to legally work abroad, which can turn employers off immediately. However, if you have a solid global network and show that you are qualified for the job, again there is a good chance they will consider you for hire.

It all depends on your professional qualifications, experience, and the effort you put into landing the job. Many financial professionals aim high by targeting overseas hedge funds, private equity firms, and investment banks for finance job opportunities. If you are just starting out in the field, then you might want to start a little lower; begin by looking for finance internships abroad and work your way up from there.

The salary you will receive mainly depends on the economic status and tax policies of the country you find a job in. Obviously there is a huge range within your potential compensation, but also bear in mind that in certain regions of the world (such as India or China) your salary will take you a lot further than others (such as Europe or Japan). Additional factors to consider are housing affordability, compensation for transportation, healthcare, and employee benefits.

Break Down Barriers. As the global marketplace continues to consolidate, economic and political borders simply do not mean what they used to. Finance and corporate activity transcend country lines, and obtaining a finance job abroad will put you on the innovative edge of cooperative economic action.

Diversify Your Qualifications. As global finance continues to develop as an essential part of economics, having international work experience will greatly expand your own knowledge and ability within financial affairs. It will also make you a more intriguing candidate for future finance jobs (maybe in yet another country).

Freedom to Speculate. By deciding to move abroad and begin an international career in finance, you are making the most important investment possible in a foreign econom, yourself. If you think you know the global marketplace, this is the time to put your money where your mouth is.

A lot of research roles. Also cross-border M&A and capital markets in general, due to roadshows.

Could you specific what type of research roles? like equity research ?

BrianHunter - Certified Professional

Well, absolutely sales for relations with clients and for various roadshow and presentations. Various other roles such as M&A , research, financial strategies etc. But generally speaking consulting roles offer much much more travel than finance jobs. Especially compared with trading , credit risk etc.

Archer's Sterling's picture

Is consulting more of a job for after you've started your career in another field? I've heard its equally if not harder to break into than investment banking if you are undergrad.

Is a more management oriented job. Usually big3 and big4 recruit in campus. There isn't a process defined ex ante : sometimes banker become consultant and sometimes consultant becomes bankers

I know I'll get some crap for this one, but Audit does require a lot of international travel if you work for a big company if you're looking for something on the corporate side. Any company with multiple sites and an international presence will require you to travel abroad regularly for work. It's not as glorious as other things, but it's an opportunity to see the world on someone else's dime.

jankynoname - Certified Professional

There can be a decent amount of intl travel in consulting depending on the project focus. Equity research for sure within certain coverage areas (tech, oil/gas or mining, gaming/lodging, some industrials). In general for most funds you will not be doing more than one or two international trips a year, but I know lots of long/short guys who are going overseas like every other month.

Corp finance depending on what you're doing. Multi National Corporations have their own consulting and audit functions which travel quite extensively.

Corp finance here for mid-sized company. Travels to Europe 2-3 times a year. Mostly for important meetings or training.

Opportunities for International Travel in Corporate Finance ? ( Originally Posted: 06/04/2017 )

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if there are roles in corporate finance that allow for/require travel, how common they are, and what level one would have to be to have those opportunities open. I'm currently in professional services (financial due diligence group at an accounting firm) and know that I don't want to do this forever for a variety of reasons. That said, the good thing about professional services is that you have the chance to do international rotations as you move up and get decent reviews.

I'm not so crazy about corporate travel that I'd want to do it every single week, like a management consultant does. That said, I do enjoy traveling for work on occasion (say, once every 4-6 weeks for 1 week or something along those lines) because it breaks the monotony of going to the same desk everyday, and gives me some exposure to different parts of the world/country and new people.

I'm wondering if it's possible to find the balance I'm looking for of traveling maybe 25%-30% of the time or so in a corporate finance role and especially if I can still have opportunities to travel abroad either for business meetings with customers or even with internal teams abroad.

Guest1655 - Certified Professional

I've traveled internationally several times working in corp strat / dev. Traveling for work internationally has a different feel than when traveling for pleasure but you get to expense some great meals and do most of your sightseeing in the evenings. Was definitely among my most fondest memories of the job.

BankerC159 - Certified Professional

Depends on the company. I think if you are working in a general Corp Finc function (e.g. FP&A - excluding Corp Dev/M&A) you probably will do minimal/if any international traveling.

If you work on Corp Dev/ M&A team for an international company or a domestic company looking to expand internationally, there will be some opportunity. But in my experience, that is really reserved for the higher level (Directors and up).

Say you believe that actively living and working in a country beats passive traveling as a tourist. Assuming you're reading this website, though, you're probably not interested in teaching gigs or stamping visas. You're still pretty serious about your career and about accumulating in value as a professional.

So, what careers or fields are the most internationally mobile? What careers/fields are portable enough that you can add value without having to be completely fluent in the local language? What companies are flexible with allowing their employees geographic mobility, should they wish it? Realistically, there will be trade offs—what are they?

Management consulting strikes me as a likely candidate, but I imagine many would be keen to hear more colour / other monkeys' opinions.

Working for a bank and transferring offices seems like a good way to move for work. To travel for work, seems like consulting is probably the obvious choice. Anyone care to provide more details?

The Average Consulting Rate for a Senior Financial Analyst

What is an estimate of how much accountants make a year, tax preparer vs. cpa.

  • Financial Analyst Work Conditions
  • The Average Starting Salary for a CPA

If you take an accounting or finance role at a corporation where the focus of your work is the corporation and the other people you interact with are located nearby, there's no need to travel. However, you can find plenty of finance and accounting jobs that require travel when your work involves clients, such as an auditor, bank examiner, investment banker or ERP implementer, you might be required to travel a majority of the time. The distance you have to travel depends on where your clients are located.

Certified Public Accountants

You'll find plenty of public accounting jobs that require travel, although the travel could be local travel. CPAs audit publicly traded companies to ensure their accounting procedures are accurate and comply with industry-accepted methods and principles. Auditors spend most of their time on site at client locations while they perform audits.

It's important for an auditor to be at a client's office to observe the controls and procedures that are actually in place and compare them to the written policies and procedures. Larger firms usually require more travel because their clients might be located anywhere and their audit projects take longer to complete.

Financial or Bank Examiners

Another one of the finance and accounting jobs that require travel is a financial or bank examiner. These are finance professionals who also perform audits. However, they audit banks, savings and loans and credit unions to examine their banking practices, controls and procedures.

Examiners have similar travel requirements to public accounting auditors because they also must perform audits on site at an organization's location. For example, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency says that bank examiners can spend up to 75 percent of their time traveling.

Investment Banker Jobs

Investment bankers are required to travel often as part of their jobs. Specifically, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes travel needs can be extensive and include domestic and international trips. These bankers help companies raise funds and provide advice on merger and acquisition strategies.

If an investment banker in New York has clients located in Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles and New York, he will have to travel occasionally or frequently to each city to visit with his clients. He might also be required to travel to Dallas and Miami to deliver sales presentations to prospective clients.

Accounting Technology Implementers

Some accounting and finance jobs focus on helping clients use technology to improve productivity and gain greater insight into the business through data analysis. If a company hires a firm to help them implement a new accounting system, the finance lead on the project team might work full time at the client's location for six months, a year or even longer. Employees in these travel-intensive jobs often fly to a client's site on Sunday evening, fly home Thursday night, go in to the office on Friday and repeat the routine every week until they complete the project.
