Kudremukh Trek Reviews

Nisarg kumar.

One of the must-do treks. Do not quit at any point in time. It's a moderate trek. Only two places are a steep claim, apart from that meadow walk. It's a time-based trek(start early as possible so u will have enough time). Trust me it is a nice view all around. The beautiful Nature feels so good.

So a wonderful trek forever for me and my friends. There are beautiful mountains which have covered by green grass. It was a nice view and click the photographs also. Everything was perfect.

Suraj Hebbar

Trek has to be on everyone's bucket list. The jungle walk made me pure from the inside. The fresh cold water flowing through the streams that you pass through is the highlight of the jungle walk. And when you reach the peak it's just heaven. Even though some might feel a bit exhausted cause of the climb, it's worth every drop of sweat you shed.

Bala Chandra

We can reach only via jeep, it takes half an hour from the main road. from there 12km trekking that covers 3 mountains. totally for up and down 24km. I have seen a lot of animals footprint such as bears, tigers, bison, wild dog also so much of leeches, we have to cross more than 15 rivers.

It's a beautiful place. The forest department needs to take care of plastic free because nowadays a lot of trekkers visit and strictly update homestay people as well. Thanks to Banbanjara for taking care of us like a family.

Praveen Lal

It was very nice. Need to walk for 12km on the side but then you will get many small waterfalls and very good views that are completely worth it. I will suggest a must-do if you love trekking. Their trekking is not easy but trust me it was a joyful trek, fun, entertainment, etc.

RAHUL KUMAR

This is the starting point for the Kudremukha Trek peak. One can reach early in the morning, park their vehicles, have coffee tea biscuits, etc, and will need to hire a 4-wheel drive jeep to get to the forest gate a few km uphill. The actual trek starts after the formalities at the checkpoint are completed - fees, guide charges, etc. You could also have breakfast and also carry packed foot as they trek, this is available from the last homestay on top. It was done by only the Banbanjara and their team.

Wonderful experience.......!!!!!!! Kudremukh Trek is one of the best and most beautiful treks in India. At that palace have helpful, honest, loving, and caring people. Full of enjoying theirs. and I give a big thanks to Banbanjara due to fulfilling over requirements.

Anmol Tiwari

To get to the trek base from the main road it's approximately 8km. You can get there by jeep or through your vehicle. The road is not well laid and you will encounter many potholes and in a few parts the road itself is missing. You will have a great time reaching the base camp with your vehicle. It was a nice trek for us. Thanks to the team Banbanjara for a wonderful trip.

It was my first and most wonderful experience of Kudremukh Trek. You need to get your bags checked before you commence with your trek. Plastics and flammable items are strongly prohibited, even I urge 'do not carry plastics', it's for the betterment of our nature. Overall a great place to visit in winter.

Kudremukh peak is nestled in the heart of the western ghats in Chikkamagaluru district. It comes under Kudremukh National Park which is the second-largest wildlife protected area in the western ghats.

It is situated at an altitude of 6,207 ft and is the 3rd highest peak of Karnataka after Mullayyangiri and Baba Budangiri.

Kudremukh is a home for many flora and fauna. You can even spot deer and peacocks on the way, amongst other wildlife, while trekking!

➤ What to Watch out for

1. the horse’s face structure of the peak.

The Kudremukh peak has a unique structure that looks like a horse’s face from the side. This structure is visible after an hour of trekking from the forest office. This looks closer but there is another 3 hours of trekking to reach that point.

2. Trekking inside the Shola forest

Shola is a local name for grassland and shrublands that are visible in the western ghats. You have to trek through shola forest to reach the Kudremukh peak.

This forest is home to many wildlife species, like deer, lion-tailed macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, leopard, common langur and many more. If you are lucky enough, you spot them while trekking. During monsoon season, you can find leeches for every step in this section. The forest is also home for some of the rarest species of frogs that are found here.

One of the fascinating parts of this section is the waterfalls and small streams. You have to cross many streams on the way to the peak. Sometimes you may have to wet your shoes while crossing.

The mix of clouds, mist, and hills creates a breathtaking scene, making each moment special. Tips:  Wear proper trekking shoes and carry a trekking pole as well. These two will help you while crossing the stream.

Apply Dettol or Savlon before the start of the trek to avoid leeches. Just let it be and remove once you reach the grassland or summit if you find any.

You encounter many waterfalls and small streams until you reach the first lonely tree.

As soon as you exit the forest section, you can see the first Ontimara inviting you with space underneath. That spot is surrounded by a wide canopy. This tree has proper seating arrangements beneath it with excellent views of the valley. You get to see the stream flowing down the valley and the rolling hills in front of you.

From the first Ontimara, the trail is flat with Kudremukh Valley on your right and a mountain on your left. You will be trekking on the grassland with occasional dense trees. After trekking for a few kilometers, you will reach a stream, which you have to cross. After the stream, you reach a flat clearing with clear views of Kudremukh Peak Ridge. This section turns sluchy during the monsoons. If you go early in the morning, you might get lucky and spot a herd of deer. After a walk on the straight section for a kilometer, you reach a steep ascent of about 300 meters. After the ascent, you reach the second Ontimara.

If you are calculating from the forest office, it will take 2 hours to reach the distinctive mark point of the second Ontimara.

This is the most beautiful part of the trek! The peak is right in front of your eyes and the excitement begins as you are about to reach the summit i.e Kudremukh Peak.

You are at the top of the Kudremukh now. To see the best view, you need to go a little down to the ledge. Make some space to sit. This place can get very windy.

You can see the 270-degree view of the uneven green carpets if you are lucky. For most times at the peak, you will be surrounded by clouds and mist. You hardly get a window to capture the view. Be patient and enjoy the play of clouds. If you are lucky, the spectacular view is something worth taking back from the trek.

The tranquillity around makes you feel satisfied. Do not forget to have lunch in that setting.

The road from the entrance to the forest office is not good. Hence, park your vehicle near one of the shops at the entrance and get into the jeep from there. There will be many jeeps standing at the entrance. You can ask them to drop you to the forest office or any homestay if you have pre-booked. They charge you around Rs 150 per person.

Tip: Inform one of the homestay owners on the previous day to arrange a jeep. It will be cheaper than booking on the spot. They charge you around Rs 600 including pickup, drop, breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.

2. Is taking a guide mandatory for this Kudremukh Trek?

The forest department will assign one and they will either meet you at the Forest office of Basrikal or at the checkpost before starting on the trek. The ratio of 1:10 is followed as a thumbrule. If you are carrying a mineral water bottle, then it will be counted before you start, and you need to ensure about getting it back. You have to get down at the town of Kalasa . From Kalasa, you have to find transportation to Balagal . Balagal is around 10 Kms from Kalasa. You can get Auto there which charge around 500 Rupees. Reaching to the Kudremukh Trek Base

From Balagal bus stop, there is another five Kilometer of a journey to the forest department office. You can find Jeeps there which will take you to the Kudremukh Trek base. They will charge you another 600 Rupees for the same.

Or, if you want to avoid all these troubles, it is better to talk with a homestay person and sort things in advance. For example, we stayed at Bella Homestay . They charged around 500 which included Jeep pick up from Kalasa, breakfast, packed lunch for the trek, evening dinner, homestay, warm water, campfire, tea & coffee and even next day breakfast along with that they will also help you in arranging the permission for the trek and drop you at the base of the trek and pick you up in the evening when the trek is over.  So, it is better to relax and leave all the troubles to them.

Now only first 50 people will get the entry for the trek to the Kudremukh. If the group size is more than seven, the new charges are Rs. 500 per person.

Kudremukh Trek Guide in Details

Section i: from forest office to ontimara (lone tree).

Less than a kilometre of your journey will be spent strolling through open grassland before you arrive at the First Tree View Point. You can see mountain ranges and a mist-covered valley in front of you while on this trek. Soon you will be in the dense Shola forest. You’ll come across several streams of water in this woodland, the first of which you’ll cross after 15 to 20 minutes. Remarkably clean streams, you can fill your bottle with water from them.

The gentle elevation makes for enjoyable hiking in this woodland, and if you’re lucky, you might even see some wildlife. Soon enough, you’ll be exiting the forest area. The landscape opens up and you’ll be able to see the Kudremukh peak for the first time from here. You’ll be surrounded by several shrubs and ferns until you see a lonely tree, known locally as Ontimara. You can rest here for some time.

Section II: Ontimara to the zig-zag section

The initial ascent from Ontimara is level, with the Kudremukh valley on the right. Before you leave, this trail briefly becomes a forest trail with water streams. After that, you’ll spend at least an hour walking down a winding trail through an entirely open area of the countryside. You’ll be surrounded by bamboo bushes and hard ascents. You’ll be walking along the sides of hills, watching people climb up from below.

Keep an eye out for the surrounding surroundings as you hike from Ontimara to the zig-zag part because you’ll pass several stages of undulating hills and vast valleys. You might wish to grab your camera and record the constantly shifting landscapes. As you near the zig-zag section, there will be a steep ascent. This is another section where you should keep an eye out for the scenery. The whole of Kudremukh valley opens up after some point.

Section III: Ridge walk (zig-zag section) to Kudremukh peak

As you approach the summit from where the zigzag part began, you will make a complete U-turn. As the name implies, the entire 1 kilometre of your journey will be through a zigzag path. Make sure to stop at the British-era church remains, which are a detour on the right side, once the zigzagging part comes to a conclusion. Its past is intriguing because it served as a resting place for British soldiers. The building is now entirely decayed and overgrown with vegetation. Return to the trail after seeing the chapel.

You can see the route and the summit in front of you, so you’ll be travelling on a ridge from this point on. One of the most picturesque aspects of the hike is the ascent from here to the peak, where you can take in panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. If you’re lucky, there may also be clouds and mist all around you. From here, it takes an additional 40 minutes to get to Kudremukh peak. We finished the trek in one direction in four hours, arriving at the Kudremukh summit by noon.

The Kudremukh summit offers without a doubt the greatest views of the entire hike. A 270-degree panorama of the mountains around you is possible. You can also be surrounded by clouds and mist, depending on the weather. Additionally, you will be able to view the Kudremukh horse face in all its glory. It is a peak that resembles the face of the horse. You can try capturing the same and all the other beautiful sceneries you observe from here.  Spend some time soaking in the atmosphere and have your packed lunch.

Kudremukh trekking tips

  • Try to start your trek as early as possible because, by the time you reach near the peak and the final ascent, there will be the sun. So, it becomes harder to walk in the sun.
  • Do not worry about the water. The water is available throughout the trek and even near the peak.
  • Sometimes guides do not want you to ascend the peak because it will be dark if the trek starts late. So, it is better to start early.
  • We saw wild cow and deer while coming back so if you are lucky you can also see that.
  • Bring a small bag with you so that you leave behind other stuff at the homestay and carry things such as water bottles, camera, and food in the bag which would make the weight lighter and you will be able to walk fast.
  • Wear nice shoes with a good grip because on the steep slopes, chances of slipping and falling, in the summer as well as monsoon, becomes high.

' src=

Search on Google maps for Bella homestay Kudremukh

Now you have a better place to stay – Shola Heights. Clean good rooms and great food. They will even pick and drop you from the bus stand. Will arrange for packed food and different treks also.

Is there a separate fees for foreigners?

' src=

Can we reach Balegal in bus and walk to Mullodi from there?

It is absolutely possible to walk to Mullodi from there. But the walk would consume most of your time. I would better recommend you to take a vehicle. Because Kilometers on the plain does not make sense when you are intended to go for the trekking. It will not only consume your time but also make you tired.

' src=

Where to park the car at Balagal village ? planning self drive from bangalore and stay at Base camp..

Sorry sir, I am not sure that. We had a driver left in the van

' src=

ON the main road where you take the jeep to mullodi, there is plenty of place and since this is a tourist place I dont see any issue with you parking next to the road. Plus they have couple of shops who arrange for the jeep..you can ask them to look out once in a while or you can park in front of the shop itself

' src=

Very good. Thanks for your information. Perfect guide….

You are welcome shyam 🙂

' src=

Perfect guide !!! Thanks for sharing

Kudremukh trek

Kudremukh trek

Not for nothing is the Kudremukh Peak called the Himalayas of the South. Kudremukh also know as Kudremukha literally means ‘horse face’ because it is generally believed that this mountain range resembles the face of a horse. It has all the natural attributes that the Himalayas have–cascading waterfalls, dense forests, narrow streams and birds whistling in the woods. A trek here can easily win as one of the Western Ghats’ most naturally beautiful. As you explore this divine territory, you will see the vast variety in its landscape–not something other treks can come close to.

On your way to the peak, you’ll come across several gushing streams, dense Shola forests, rolling green hills, tall bamboo shrubs and the majestic peak itself in all its glory. As you stop to take in the scenery here, you get blown off both by the magnificence of the peak and by the sharp and gusty winds.

Situated in the heart of the Chikmagalur District, taking a Kudremukh trek is an adventure buff’s dream come true. It has an altitude 1,894 metres above sea level and ranks No. 3 in terms of height after the Mullayanagiri and Bababudangiri peaks.

This mountain peak is sprawled across a small village in Chikmagalur district. Here’s where you can see miles and miles of coffee plantations, which enrich the air and make you feel invigorated. There are several sceneries here that give you a slice of everything wonderful. Check out the gushing streams, lush flora and waterfalls dot your way as you trek through this range.

Details about the trek

Starting Point of Kudremukh Trek : A small village called Mullodi, about six kilometers from the main road is the starting point of this trek. You will find a couple of homestays here that are ideal for being the base camp of this trek.

How To Reach Mullodi : Take a KSRTC or a private bus to Mullodi and get down at Kalasa. Take a connecting bus to Kudremukh. Alight at Balegal, 10.5 kms from Kalasa. You can also hire a private jeep from Balegal bus stop for about Rs. 600 for eight people. Make Balegal your starting point of your trek, though by starting at Kalasa, your trek is shorter and less difficult to complete in a day.

Kudremukh Trek Difficulty Level : The trek from Mullodi to Lobo’s house is an easy one. From here to Ontimara, the difficulty level increases slightly. The trail turns steep on two short stretches here, but as you move on from Ontimara to the end of the Zig-Zag route, the difficulty level increases. Again from the Zig-Zag trail till you reach Kudremukh peak, the trek becomes moderate in its difficulty level. So, the overall difficulty level is moderate.

Total distance : Mullodi: 4.5 km Lobo’s house: 2.5 km Zig-zag starting point: 1 km Zig-zag end point: 1.5km Total distance: 9.5 km from Mullodi

Time required : Mullodi: 1-1.5 hrs Lobos house: 1-1.5hrs Zig-zag starting point: 30-45 mins Zig-zag end point: 1hr-1.5 hrs to the peak Total time required to trek from Mullodi to peak is 3.5hrs – 5hrs

The Kudremukh trek is every orophile's dream. Kudremukh trek is through steep hills and valleys. The hills, which bear the brunt of the severe monsoon wind, preclude any tree growth as a result the landscape is covered with grass. The valleys which are tucked in, have reasonable protection from wind and a deep soil profile, as a result of which stunted evergreen forests exist creating a unique microclimate, rich with mosses, orchids, etc. The whole scenery of grassland interspersed with narrow strips of forests provide a fantastic vista for a trekker. Kudremukh Trek Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Kudremukh the “trekkers paradise” and the 3rd highest peak in Karnataka was going to be my next destination. Kudremukh which means “Horse Face” in Kannada because the peak resembles the horse’s face. Didn’t give any thought about the fitness before leaving. But trust me if you are not fit please don’t even try this trek. It has a lush green landscape which you can adore for a lifetime. Also, you can get a similar picture to the bliss theme(Windows XP wallpaper). One of the most important things is carrying your Aadhar copy for the permit which I’ll tell in detail further.

The best time to visit the Kudremukh trek

Kudremukh trek

The best time to visit Kudremukh would be after the Monsoon from October to March. You can go after March as well but it starts getting hotter which makes the trekking harder. During the monsoon, a lot of leeches can be found hanging everywhere make sure to cover your full body with clothes.

How to reach from Bangalore to Kudremukh

Kudremukh trek

I started my trip from Bangalore in the night. So to reach Kudremukh there are no direct buses instead we have to get down at Kalasa and from Kalasa take another bus to the base of Kudremukh Trek. There are not a lot of buses from Kalasa to the base of the Kudremukh trek, thus do check the bus timings beforehand. You can either book a seater or sleeper based on your choice. Sugama Tourist and KSRTC provide the bus to Kalasa. The price starts from ₹375 to ₹650 for seater and sleeper respectively.

I took the seater and the bus reached Kalasa in the early morning by 5 am. It was pitch dark and very cold so make sure to carry at least one woollen clothing with you. The bus drops you near the police station. Take a right from there and after going a few steps ahead you’ll find the petrol pump from where you’ll get the next bus to Kudremukh. It surely made me feel like I should settle here in the calmness of the town. The people of the town were also very simple and humble. The city buses start at 6:30 in the morning. The distance from Kalasa to the base of Kudremukh trek is approximately 10Kms. The bus charges ₹20 only.

If going with a group you can get down at Balegal.  Once you get down at Balegal you can hire a jeep, which will drop you to the forest office for permission and also take you to the base camp of the Kudremukh trek. The jeep costs Rs 150-200 per person. For solo travelers, you can directly go on the bus to Kudremukh check post forest gate 2. But you can only do the trek if you manage to find a group in which you can fit in.

Things to know about trekking in Kudremukh.

Kudremukh trek

The first and the most important thing is the Aadhar copy without which you wouldn’t get the permit to trek. The permit charges are ₹425 per person which you have to pay at the forest office. Once you have the permit you can go back in the jeep to the base camp. The base camp(Mulodi) is 6 Km from Balegal. Hold on to your seat well, ’cause this is gonna be one hell of a ride. The trek is 18 km both ways and usually takes 4-5 hours one way. The trekking is not allowed after 9:30 am.

Where to stay in Kudremukh

The forest officer will say there is no place to stay near the base camp. But trust me you can stay in Raje Gowda’s home which is right at the base camp. Once you reach the base camp you can keep your luggage in his place and freshen up. If you are carrying your tent he will charge you ₹500 for pitching your tent and 4 times food(2 Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner). But if you want a room in his place you will have to pay him ₹ 700.

Kudremukh trek base camp: The beginning of lush green landscapes.

Kudremukh trek

On leaving the Raje Gowda’s homestay, make sure to pack some lunch for yourself. You need to have a guide for this trek or else you can’t do this trek. The guide charges ₹300 – ₹500 per person based on how good you can bargain. The trek starts from the forest office in the base camp. Please don’t litter the national park as while coming back the bags and if you have left anything on the trek they will fine you. I started the trek at 9:15 AM The start of the trek is easy, all you see is lush green mountains. On the way, you see a lot many boards which tell you about the animals in the national park. You would be lucky if you spot even one of them all, I could find was leeches(insect).

The Kudremukh permit fee is ₹ 600 per person

The first stop: picturesque tree

Kudremukh trek

Trekking almost a kilometre you’ll find a tree, which is a great place for photography and you can take a 5-minute break. The peak is also seen from here. You can carry one water bottle which is sufficient as you will find many water streams from where you can drink the water directly. The Kudremukh trekking route is just amazing with the green landscape on the bottom and white clouds at the top. On going further you will cross a couple of water streams. The first 4-5 km of the trek is easy.

The second stop: Another picturesque tree

I wonder did someone planted these trees and made them resting spots or if these trees were already present and people stopped here for photography and then they became resting spots. Beyond this tree, the main trek starts. You find your first steep climb. Make sure to have a good breakfast at the start of the trek and don’t be like me. I almost gave up because I hadn’t eaten my breakfast until the guide told me to have something. So everyone went front and after finishing my breakfast I started the trek again.

You just can’t stop admiring the place. The peak looks even closer now. After every km, there is a water stream. The water is so cold and drinkable, which makes you feel so refreshed.

Almost reached the second steep, this time I felt better to climb it but then since not being fit, I did make many stops. It was already 1 pm, and our guide told us to hurry up as while getting down it would get dark.

The summit: Finally did it!

Kudremukh trek

During the trek, I had given up so many times but I don’t know what still kept me going. And after almost 4 hours I did reach the summit. Had some lunch there, rested for a while, and took some photos. The peak is all covered in the clouds. No visibility because of the clouds and it gets cold as well. After taking some deserved rest and some decent photos we start to trek down. Getting down is easier but is risky as well. One wrong step and you might hurt yourself very badly.

The Descent: Kudremukh trek

Kudremukh trek

The descent was again very picturesque and it took a total of 3 hours. After reaching the base the forest officers checked our bag whether we hadn’t left anything in the national park. Reaching the homestay I had some snacks and pitched my tent. Since it was almost drizzling I placed my tent on the house verandah. After having dinner early(8 pm) I dozed off. In the night it did rain heavily. Mind you there is no or less signal in the homestay.

Day 2: Time to see some falls

Kudremukh trek

I got up by 8 am and started preparing for the day. I had enquired everyone about the famous Hanuman Gundi Falls. Since they have closed it I planned to go see another fall – Ellaneru Falls. After having some breakfast I left the homestay. You can tell the owner of the homestay to call the jeep. Since I preferred to walk down to click some good photos. On the way found an old man who too was walking down. And I spoke with him in Kannada. I guess I hadn’t spoken so much Kannada in the last 14 years, how much I spoke in the last 2 days. It surely made the people feel good as well.

I reached the bus stop and took the bus to Samse. The bus ticket was just ₹8.

The hidden falls: Ellaneru falls

Kudremukh trek

After reaching Samse I asked one of the localite about the direction to the falls. After walking for almost 2 km, I was almost inside the forest. Very few houses could now be seen. I asked in one of the houses and they told me it’s just 1km(Which never got over). I started walking but then there came a time when there was no one seen on the path. It gets scary when you are solo traveling to places like these. After going further I found 2 bikers coming top. Upon enquiring with them they told me the falls is another 200mts. Found some relief, reached the falls, and found no one there.  I relaxed for some time there and had to rush because of a lot of leeches. On the way back stopped at some beautiful streams which had some beautiful rice fields at the back. Once you reach the main road you can take an auto to the bust stop it will just be ₹20.

The Beauty of Samse: Tea Plantation

Kudremukh trek

My next stop was a tea plantation spot. It was just the next stop. It was already 3 pm and I had started to starve. I decided to finish seeing the tea plantation soon and catch the bus to Kalasa. Upon reaching there on the left you can see the water flowing and on the right is the beautiful tea plantation. It is a must-visit place if you come for the Kudremukh trek.

Final Stop Kalasa: The trip is over

Kudremukh trek

After spending 30 mins at the tea plantation I took the bus back to Kalasa and had some amazing egg-fried rice at a local restaurant for 70 Rs. It was already 4:30 pm, and my bus was in the night at 9 pm. So I just stayed in the waiting space for the bus which smelled bad but didn’t have any other place to go either. The time just passed and it was already 8 pm, so preferred to have dinner soon. Had loved the fried rice so much and ordered the same thing with half a plate of chicken which cost me ₹150. And to digest everything had some Soda which was ₹25. The bus was on time and after sitting on the bus I don’t remember when I slept. Reached Bangalore early morning by 6 am. This was the end of an adventurous trip. Kudremukh trek taught me a lot of things: Try to always be fit, and never skip food while traveling. It was a great learning overall.

Looks like a fun hike, especially if you time it so that you can see the sunrise at the end , I did a few treks around my country and whenever I felt the need to give up i had to make myself go, just for the sunrise because it would be beautiful 😀

Unfortunately i wasn’t able to see the sunrise on this one cause it had started to rain by the time i was descenting.

How long back did you do this trek? Is the permit fees of Rs. 275 still applicable? I have been reading across sources that it is Rs. 475

I did it last year and recently heard that the permit is available only online. I was lucky to find a group otherwise it’s very tough to get a permit for solo travellers

Introduction to Kudremukha

Kudremukha, translating to the ‘head of a horse’ in Kannada, is one of the prominent peaks in the Western Ghats. Ranking as the third highest peak in this mountain range, it reaches an elevation of 1892 meters (6207 feet). It claims the second-highest position among Karnataka’s mountains, following Mullayana Giri.

The trekking trail winds through lush valleys and the encompassing hills, offering a journey worth undertaking. The stunning greenery throughout the trek adds to the allure, making the entire experience captivating.

How to Get to Base of Kudremukha?

  • By Road – Traveling by road is the optimal and most convenient way to reach Kudremukha. Situated in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, the mountain is approximately 320 kilometres away from Bangalore. Due to the unsealed roads, the journey from the Mullodi forest checkpoint to the trek’s base camp requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

While trekking through the national park, keep a vigilant eye out for wildlife. During our hike, we encountered a bison, emphasizing the importance of caution. Maintaining a safe distance from wildlife and avoiding confrontation is crucial, especially with the robust and sizable bison. Exercise extreme care when in their vicinity.

  • Upon reaching Kalasa, local buses or auto-rickshaws are available to transport you to the mountain base, Mullodi. To access the homestay, which also serves as the base camp for the trek, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary.

For those considering air travel, the nearest international airport is located in Mangalore, approximately 100 kilometres away from Mullodi.

Logistics of Kudremukh a Trek

  • Starting and Finishing Points : Mullodi village.
  • Trek to the peak: The round-trip distance from the base camp is approximately 20 to 22 kilometres. The base camp is situated at a homestay in Mullodi village.
  • Grade: The trek difficulty level is categorized as moderate to difficult. While the trail is reasonably well-defined, it is advisable to hire a guide. This recommendation is primarily due to the abundant wildlife in the area. The trek fee for hiring a guide is approximately INR 1000 per person.

If you are looking for a very challenging trek in the Western Ghats, read the trek in Kumara Parvatha .

  • Suitable for : Experienced trekkers.
  • Best Season : The ideal seasons for trekking in Kudremukha are spring, winter, and summer, spanning from October to May. While trekking might be challenging during the monsoons, the mountains exhibit a breathtaking allure with lush greenery and scenic beauty amid the rains.
  • The trek must be undertaken between 6 AM and 6 PM, and all trekkers are required to exit the national park range before 6 PM.
  • Note: Overnight stays within the Kudremukha National Park are prohibited; therefore, you must return to the home stay. A daily limit of 150 people is imposed for trekking. Given the abundant wildlife, exercise caution and stay vigilant for bison or birds during the trek. The base camp is easily accessible via a short jeep ride from the nearest village.

  • Day Pack Essentials: Use a small, lightweight day pack for sunscreen, snacks, extra socks, a first-aid kit and water.
  • Leech Protection: Be prepared for leeches, especially during monsoons. A solution of Dettol (1/4th) and water (3/4th) works best. Leech socks are advisable during the trek.

Trekking Kudremukha by Yourself

Planning a trip to Kudremukha independently is certainly feasible, although it’s recommended to engage a local guide. The local guide charges are typically around INR 1000 per group. The forest department restricts entry to the national park, issuing a limited number of tickets (approximately 150 people). A trekking fee of INR 575 per person is required and should be paid at the forest checkpoint.

Remember to carry a government-issued identification, such as an Aadhar card, that includes your photograph and address for necessary documentation.

Is Trekking in Kudremukha Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

As a standard practice, it’s advisable to embark on the Kudremukha trek with a group or, at the very least, a trekking companion. Specifically for the Kudremukha trek, I recommend either opting for a tour agency or hiring a guide at the mountain’s base. This precaution is crucial due to the abundant wildlife in the park. Additionally, make sure to register at the Mullodi forest check post (Kudremukha Forest Department) before commencing the trek.

Solo treks are not recommended. Instead, it’s safer to rely on the guidance provided by the forest department or trustworthy locals for trekking information.

Kudremukh trek guide: The best rolling hills you’ll ever see

Would you like to experience an adventurous trek which has the best rolling green hills you’ll ever see, get engulfed in clouds and mist and walk through an evergreen forest full of water streams?

Then you must try the Kudremukh trek.

Known as the mini ‘Scotland of India ‘,  the Kudremukh trek is one of the best treks in Karnataka that exposes you to diverse natural sceneries and landscapes within the Kudremukh National Park.

It is also home to the third-highest peak in Karnataka and the best part is that you can do it on your own even if you’re a beginner.

I did the Kudremukh trek from Mangalore and in this guide, I would like to tell you the itinerary I followed so that you can plan an effective solo trek to Kudremukh.

  • Section III: Ridge walk (zig-zag section) to Kudremukh peak

Which Kudremukh trek packages can I sign up for?

Where is kudremukh.

Kudremukh is also a small hill station cum mining town located 100 km from Chikmagalur.

It derives its name from its Kannada name  Kuduremukha  meaning horse-faced which is how the Kudremukh peak appears.

The Kudremukh trek happens inside the Kudremukh National Park which is home to several endangered and endemic species like lion-tailed macaque, leopard and gaur.

Why should you do the Kudremukh trek?

The Kudremukh trek is ideal for nature lovers who want to experience a different side of Karnataka. The following are the 3 reasons why you should do the Kudremukh trek:

1. The best rolling hills you’ll ever see on a trek

kudremukh trek

Kudremukh has the best rolling hills you’ll ever see on a trek in the Western Ghats. They appear as if they’re taken from a Windows wallpaper. The best view is from the Kudremukh peak where you can see a range of never-ending rolling hills.

2 .  Ridge walk surrounded by clouds and mist

weather in kudremukh

The last section of the trek wherein you walk through a ridge has some of the best views as you get to see sweeping valleys and mountain ranges all around you. To add to that, you’ll also be engulfed in clouds and mist if you trek after the monsoon season.

3. Hike through evergreen forests filled with water streams

homestays near kudremukh

The initial walk through the shola forest is filled with adventure as you’ll be crossing several water streams and surrounding yourself with a variety of trees and birds. If lucky, you can also spot several endangered and endemic species like the Malabar giant squirrel, lion-tailed macaque and deer.

How to reach Kudremukh?

kalasa kudremukh

The starting point for the Kudremukh trek is Mullodi which is a small village with few houses. It houses the Kudremukh Trek Forest Office from where you need to get a ticket for the Kudremukh trek.

Mullodi lies between Kudremukh and Kalasa, a nearby town which is accessible by public transport.

The two nearest cities to Kudremukh are Mangalore (100 km) and Bangalore (330 km). As such, it’s always ideal that you start your journey from these two cities as you’ll find various options for transport.

The Mangalore airport is the nearest airport to Kudremukh at 90 km followed by the Bangalore airport which is at a distance of 351 km. Both the airports are well-connected to all the major airports in the country.

The Mangalore railway station is 100 km from Kudremukh, followed by the Bangalore railway station which is at a distance of 330 km.

If you’re travelling from Mangalore, there are limited buses from Mangalore to Kudremukh. There is one bus in the afternoon around 12-1 pm which leaves for Kalasa from the Mangalore private bus stand, also known as the State Bank Bus Stand.

As an alternative, you can take a bus to Karkala. From Karkala, you can find frequent buses to Kalasa.

Once you reach Kalasa, you can get another local bus/auto to the Balagal bus stop (10 km away). From here, you can hire a jeep to go to Mullodi, which is 5 km away.

If you’re travelling from Bangalore to Kudremukh, you can book an overnight bus from Bangalore to Horanadu via Kalasa from the  KSRTC website . You’ll reach Kalasa around 6 am. From Kalasa, you can take another bus/auto to the Balagal bus stop and then hire a jeep to go to Mullodi.

How to do the Kudremukh trek on your own?

stay in kudremukh

There are two ways to do the Kudremukh trek as a solo traveller.

The first way is to book an overnight bus to Horannadu via Kalasa (if you’re travelling from Bangalore), start your trek the next morning and leave by evening. This is ideal if you only have a day to spare.

But for the best experience, I recommend sparing two days for the Kudremukh trek. It ensures that you have a relaxed and hassle-free experience. If you choose this option, you can also book your stay with the Bella homestay, the best homestay in Kudremukh according to the internet and my personal experience.

The advantage is that Bella homestay provides food and accommodation, and arranges your jeep to the base camp, your entry ticket for the Kudremukh trek and a trekking guide.

kudremukh to chikmagalur

It is what I did for my solo trek to the Kudremukh peak.

Chandan, the owner of Bella homestay, was beneficial in making sure that I had an amazing trek to the Kudremukh peak.

Before you start your trek, make sure you call Chandan to enquire about the availability of the Bella homestay for your dates.

Search for ‘Bella Homestay Kudremukh’ on Google to get his number. You can also ask him for other details about the trek, transport options, accommodation options, etc. and he’ll be happy to help you out.

You need to pay a token amount to Chandan online to confirm your booking.

Your DIY Kudremukh Trekking Itinerary

I’ll be talking about my solo Kudremukh trekking experience in great detail in the upcoming sections so that you too can follow the same itinerary. As mentioned, I booked my stay at Bella Homestay before I went for the trek.

kudremukh distance

I started my journey from Mangalore to Kudremukh for this trek. I chose this option as starting a journey from Bangalore would have taken more time.

Note : If you’re travelling from Bangalore to Kudremukh, you can book an overnight bus to Horanadu via Kalasa from the KSRTC website and start the trek after freshening up.

I reached Mangalore by 10 am via train, ate breakfast at one of the restaurants and went to the Mangalore private bus stand, also known as the State Bank Bus Stand.

There is a bus which leaves at around 12-1 pm for Kalasa. You can enquire about this bus from anyone there (as I did). I boarded this bus and had a comfortable journey as the crowd was less and the roads were tidy.

kudremukh forest

As we start nearing Kalasa, the air becomes cooler and the landscape becomes greener.

I finally reached Kalasa by 5 pm and got down at one particular location where Chandan (the owner of Bella Homestay) had told me to get down.

Chandan was there waiting for me and he took me to his homestay via his bike.

The Bella Homestay is ideally located in a remote area surrounded by mountain ranges.

The homestay itself is well-maintained with options for rooms and camping. You get home-cooked food, free wifi and amazing hospitality from the hosts.

kudremukh stay

I occupied one of their tents, freshened up and had black tea with their homemade snacks. More people checked in as the sun sets in, and Chandan set up the campfire at night.

Major tour operators like Plan the Unplanned and Bangalore Mountain Club also book their accommodation with the Bella Homestay for their Kudremukh trek packages.

At 8-9 pm, we had home-cooked dinner after which all of the guests retired for the night.

Note : If you love stargazing, you’ll in for a treat as you’ll observe clear skies with stars all over the place.

kudremukh horse face

The next day, I woke up by 6:00 am, freshened up and had breakfast. We were also given packed lunches for the Kudremukh trek.

Chandan clubbed me with a group of five people for the Kudremukh trek. They were also staying in the same homestay.

We boarded a jeep and by 7 am, we departed for Mullondi, the starting point of the Kudremukh trek. It took almost half an hour for us to reach the starting point as the terrain was rugged and untarred.

You’ll enjoy this ride as you get the first glimpse of what you can expect from the trek. You’ll cross coffee plantations and muddy roads with streams on the way.

kudremukh homestay

At the starting point, you’ll find the Kudremukh Trek forest office. This office is open from 6 am to 6 pm.

Here, you have to pay for the entry fees, guide and DSLR/camera (if you’re carrying any). Your bags will also be checked as you aren’t allowed to carry any plastic inside the Kudremukh National Park (including plastic-packed biscuits and snacks).

Note:  Only 50 people will get permission in a day. If you haven’t taken the help of a homestay, make sure you reach the forest office as early as possible.

From the forest office, you need to trek for 9 km to reach the Kudremukh peak. You can divide this trek into 3 parts:

1. Forest office to Ontimara (lone tree)

2. Ontimara to the zig-zag section

3. Ridge walk (zig-zag section) to Kudremukh peak

Section I: From Forest office to Ontimara (lone tree)

kudremukh karnataka

We started the Kudremukh trek by 8 am.

You’ll be walking through open grassland for less than a kilometre before you reach the First Tree View Point. During this walk, you’ll be able to observe mountain ranges and a valley in front of you covered in mist.

kudremukh trek distance

You’ll soon enter the Shola thick forest. In this forest, you’ll find multiple streams of water, the first of which you’ll cross after 15-20 minutes.

Note : You can fill your bottle with water from these streams as they’re very clean.

bella homestay kudremukh

You’ll enjoy trekking through this forest because the ascent is gradual and if you’re lucky, you may even spot some animals.

Section II: Ontimara to the zig-zag section

kudremukh hotels

From Ontimara, the initial ascent is flat with the Kudremukh valley on the right. This trail soon enters a forest trail for some time with water streams before you exit it.

After this, you’ll be trekking in a completely open landscape through a narrow path for at least an hour. There will be steep ascents and bamboo shrubs surrounding you.

You’ll be walking along the edges of hills as you observe people who are ascending from below.

kudremukh hills

While you trek from Ontimara to the zig-zag section, keep an eye out on the surrounding landscapes as you’ll observe rolling hills and sweeping valleys at different stages. You may want to take out your camera and capture the sceneries that keep changing.

As you near the zig-zag section, there will be a steep ascent. This is another section where you should keep an eye out for the scenery. The whole of Kudremukh valley opens up after some point.

Section III: Ridge walk (zig-zag section) to Kudremukh peak

kudremukh weather

From the start of the zig-zag section, you’ll be taking a complete u-turn as you got towards the peak. As the name suggests, you will be trekking through a zig-zag trail for 1 km.

After the zig-zag section ends, make sure you visit the ruins of the British era church which is a diversion on the right side. It has an interesting history as it used to be a resting house for the Britishers.

The entire structure is now completely dilapidated and covered with plants. After visiting the church, come back to the trail.

chikmagalur to kudremukh

From here on, you’ll be walking on a ridge as you can see the trail and also the peak right in front of you. The walk from here to the peak is one of the most beautiful parts of the trek as you can see panoramic views of the valleys and hills around you.

If you’re lucky, you might also be surrounded by clouds and mist. It takes another 40 minutes from here to reach the Kudremukh peak.

We reached the Kudremukh peak by noon i.e. it took us four hours in total to complete the trek in one direction.

bangalore to kudremukh

Without a doubt, the best view of the entire trek comes from the Kudremukh peak. You can get a 270-degree view of all the mountains surrounding you. Depending on the weather, you may also be engulfed in clouds and mist.

You will also be able to see the Kudremukh horse face in all its glory. It is a peak that resembles the face of the horse. You can try capturing the same and all the other beautiful sceneries you observe from here.

Spend some time soaking in the atmosphere and have your packed lunch.

mangalore to kudremukh

After spending a couple of hours at the top, we started trekking back (at 2 pm) to Mullodi via the same route.

Note : Make sure you leave by 2 pm so that you’re able to reach the Kudremukh Forest Check Post before 6 pm.

Be careful while descending because some sections can be tricky. We reached back at the Kudremukh forest check post by 5 pm i.e. it took us 3 hours to descend back.

kudremukh national park

In total, we covered 9+9=18 km for the entire trek. At the check post, Chandan was there waiting for me. He picked me up as I went back to the homestay.

From thereon, I clubbed with another person I met on the trek as we went back to Mangalore together.

You can also go to Kalasa from where you can get frequent buses to Bangalore and connecting buses to Mangalore. Be sure to ask your host about the bus timings in advance so that you plan properly.

How difficult is the Kudremukh trek?

The Kudremukh trek is a beginner’s trek that can be done by anyone with reasonable fitness. During the 18 km hike to the top and back, there will be some sections where the ascent might be steep but in general, it will be a gradual increase.

Best time for the Kudremukh trek

homestays in kudremukh

The Kudremukh trek is one of those treks where the trekking season plays a vital role. And hence, I suggest you trek after the monsoon season or during winters i.e September to February.

The weather in Kudremukh during these months enhances the beauty of the Kudremukh trek. The landscape is greener and you’ll have pleasant weather throughout the trek with mist and clouds surrounding you.

You can also give the monsoon season a shot but the problem is that the terrains become slippery and there will be the added problem of leaches.

The summer season has to be avoided at any cost as the scorching heat of the sun drains your energy

Essential things to carry for the Kudremukh trek

The following are some essential things you must carry to ensure you have a pleasant experience on the Kudremukh trek.

  • An ID Card to verify your details

  • Lunch Box & Spoon to carry your packed lunch
  • Flip-flops for the homestay
  • Extra pair of clothes to change after the trek

Where to stay for the Kudremukh trek?

kudremukh trekking

If you have two days to spare and want a stress-free and organized trek, it’s always best that you sign up with one of the homestays in Kudremukh. It is why I signed up with Bella Homestay.

Like hundreds of other people who have given great reviews about the Bella Homestay, I can also vouch for it. Chandan, his brother and his staff go to great lengths to ensure that you have a comfortable stay, a great trek and an overall memorable experience.

However, if you need more options, I can suggest the following homestays in Kudremukh that have a good reputation as well:

1. Bella Homestay Kudremukh (the best homestay in Kudremukh according to the ratings/reviews)

2. Raaje Gowda’s Home Stay

3. Sathish Mullodi House

Google for them online and you’ll find their contact number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to trek kudremukh.

It can take 4-5 hours to do the trek from the Kudremukh Trek Forest Office (the starting point of the trek) to the Kudremukh Peak. While returning, it will take 3-4 hours.

So in total, you can take 7-9 hours to complete the entire trek depending on your speed.

Can we trek Kudremukh alone?

Yes, you can trek alone to Kudremukh. However, you’ll still need to arrange your entry tickets from the forest office (limited to 50 tickets per day) which might be difficult to get as a lot of homestays nearby have tie-ups with the forest office.

Hence, I suggest that you sign up for one of these homestays. It ensures that you get your tickets in advance while you also get to trek alone. It is what I did as I trekked solo to Kudremukh but with the help of a homestay.

Do note that camping in Kudremukh is not allowed.

Which is the best time to visit Kudremukh?

The best time to visit Kudremukh is during the post-monsoon and winter months i.e. from September to February. During these months, the landscape is greener and the weather is cooler which makes the entire Kudremukh landscape appealing.   As a bonus, you’ll also be engulfed in mists and clouds in certain sections of the trek. Hence, ensure that you do the trek when the weather in Kudremukh is ideal.

You can sign up with tour operators like  Plan The Unplanned  (PTU) and  Bangalore Mountaineering Club  (BMC). They organise the Kudremukh trek and their packages include food, accommodation, transport to and from Bangalore, a jeep ride to base camp, the entry fees for the trek and a guide.

Alternatively, you can sign up with homestays in Kudremukh like the Bella Homestay or Raaje Gowda’s Home Stay which also provide everything except the transport to and from Bangalore. Here too, you’ll be able to meet like-minded people who, just like you, have come for the Kudremukh trek.

homestay in kudremukh

I had an amazing time trekking to the Kudremukh peak as a solo traveller. The sights and sounds of nature along with the people I met on the trek made it an engaging experience.

The best thing about the Kudremukh trek is that it is a beginner’s trek that can be completed within a day or two.

If you’re coming from Bangalore, take an overnight bus and complete the trek on the same day. Alternatively, you can reach Kudremukh via bus in the afternoon, check in to a homestay there, and do the trek the next day.

If you’re coming from Mangalore, I suggest you leave for Kudremukh in the morning/afternoon, check in to your homestay and do the trek the next day.

I strongly recommend staying at the Bella Homestay as they’re very helpful in ensuring that you have an amazing trek to the Kudremukh peak.

Choose the right season, ensure you’re fit and carry the essential things you need for the trek so that you have the best possible experience.

Rest assured, the Kudremukh National Park gives you access to some of the best natural sceneries you’ll see in Karnataka.

If you’ve more time before/after the Kudremukh trek, I suggest that you spend a couple of days in Chikmagalur as well as it also has some breathtaking sceneries that’ll blow your mind.

The distance from Chikmagalur to Kudremukh is barely 100 km and you’ll also enjoy the road trip between these two popular hill stations in Karnataka.

With that said, I hope you found this guide useful. Let me know if you have any doubts!

Kudremukh Trek – Truly a trekkers paradise

Kudremukh trek is a must-see if you’re in Bangalore, and it’s well-known among trekkers for its stunning scenery. This is a round journey that includes more than 10 streams to cross as well as wide meadows. Kudremukh means “horse’s face” in Kannada. The unusual form of the summit inspired its name. Historically, this was known as Samseparvath because it was accessible from Samse village. Kudremukh is located in the Chikkamagaluru district, in the heart of the Western Ghats. It is part of the Kudremukh National Park, which is the western ghats’ second-largest wildlife protected area.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is the best time to visit Kudremukh?

The best time to visit this wonderful location is during the monsoon and winter. You may come at any time of year, although it is most beautiful during the monsoon season. If you’re lucky, you could glimpse “Neelakurinji” purplish-blue flowers during the monsoon, which bloom just once every 12 years. We were quite fortunate to witness this since the entire mountain range was blanketed with either green or purple-blue flowers.

The trail is clean and is plastic-free . The peak is at an altitude of 1894 meters above sea level. The meadows are so beautiful that it reminds me of my Himalayan trek to Roopkund , on day two we had to cross Asia’s largest high altitude meadows – the famous Bedni Bugyal which has some amazing campsites.

How long does it take to trek Kudremukh?

Streams along the Kuduremukh hiking trail

The Kudremukh trek is an easy to moderate hike that takes around 11.5 kilometers one way from Mullodi to the peak. Because you are not permitted to camp or remain overnight, you must return all the way to Mullodi. So, a total of around 23 kilometers must be accomplished in one day, which is achievable. Can novices attempt the Kudremukh Trek? – Yes, of course. This hike is suitable for first-time hikers and nature enthusiasts.

Kudremukh trekking package

It’s not that difficult to complete the Kudremukh trek. I would strongly advise you to undertake this on your own because it is more of a DIY trek and a one-day journey. Kalasa/Kudremukh is the nearest town, and there are direct buses from Mangalore, Bangalore, and Udupi. The distance from Bangalore is 340 kilometers. As a result, board an overnight bus to Kalasa or Kudremukh. From Kalasa Bus, you may trek on your own or contact the base camp owner (homestay) – Raje Gowda (Ph: 9481179008), who can organize pickup and drop-off at the base camp/homestay as well as an overnight stay if you wish to stay for a long time and depart the next day.

Kudremukh Trek Route

Kudremukh trek begins at the base camp/Mullodi guesthouse, where the forest department headquarters is located. Purchase admission tickets to the forest. This is the last home before the trek begins. You will have to cross more than ten creeks. The Kudremukh trek trail features a 30-degree incline.

Kuduremukh Trek Route

Carry a raincoat during the Kudremukh trek and be prepared for severe rain and cold wind once you reach the summit. There is no need to bring an extra water bottle because there are several streams even as you reach the summit. When you reach the top, bring a packed lunch, spend some time there, and then return the same way to the base camp around 5 or 6:00 p.m. During the monsoon season, you should pack salt and soak your socks in saltwater before wearing them to keep the leech away. There are also creams that are readily available at any medical store.

The Kudremukh hike is a one-day excursion. Here’s how to plan for the Kudremukh trek and have a fun weekend. Leave Bangalore on Friday night at 10:00-10:30 p.m. via Karnataka Sarige (about 500 rupees)/Volvo bus from Kempegowda Bus Stand. Arrive at the Kalasa Bus Stop around 5:00 a.m.

You may reserve a jeep in advance by calling Raje Gowda, as well as the Kudremukh trek. The jeep trip (Rs. 500 to 700 – one way for 5 people) takes about an hour to reach the base camp/Mullodi guesthouse. There are two large rooms, each with its own bathroom. After breakfast, freshen up at base camp and be ready to start hiking by 8:00 a.m.

How to plan for Kudremukh trek

When you return from your journey from the Kudremukh trek, have a hot water bath at the base camp, followed by warm food and tea, and prepare for the campfire. You may either spend the night at the homestay and depart the next day for Bangalore, or you can leave the same day. From 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., buses leave from the Kalasa Bus Stand. You will arrive in Bangalore around 4:00 a.m. Raje Gowda would charge Rs 650 for breakfast, packed lunch, evening snacks, supper, overnight lodging, hot water, and breakfast the next day (as of 2014).

Kuduremukh hiking trail

Don’t forget to obtain forest department clearance by paying Rs. 275; else, as the locals would warn you, you may end up in trouble. Because this is a national park, the forest authority is tough about poaching. You must submit your information and pay the fee at the homestay. The aforementioned fee is current as of this writing and is subject to change. Mobile signal quality may be an issue at base camp, but as you climb higher, you should expect full signal strength.

Kudremukh National Park – Kurinjal

In brief, the Kudremukh trek may be completed in one day. The next day, in addition to the Kudremukh trek, you could wish to explore another famous hiking track, Kurinjal Peak, which is a bit shorter but is a perfect weekend trip from here.

Kurinjal is a lesser-known peak in the Kuduremukh National Park, that acts as the perfect destination for people seeking a respite from the fast-paced and stressful city life. The trekking trail abounds in a mesmerizing natural beauty that is further enhanced by the calm and peaceful ambiance of the region.

Undertaking the trek takes the participants to another world, where the noise and pollution of the concrete jungles are replaced by picturesque surroundings, a breathtaking landscape, and an enchanting environment. As raw nature unravels itself at every step of the Kurinjal trek, it tickles the drowsy nerves of the participants and makes them feel truly alive besides redefining their concept of beauty and satisfaction.

A trek to the third highest peak in Karnataka – Kudremukh

 alt=

Kudremukh is spread like a green carpet in the lap of the Western Ghats. Kudremukh is the 3rd highest peak in Karnataka. It is an enchanting landscape with evergreen forests, small and large waterfalls, rivulets and meadows. It is a trekkers' paradise.

It has been a long wait for the days marked in red in the calendar. The dreams on trekking at Kudremukh blossomed into reality when I got the break I needed quite unexpectedly.

Land of the youngest daughter

Wondering where to go night trekking in India? Here's our pick

Wondering where to go night trekking in India? Here's our pick

Bring new creativity to your hobbies with travel

'Chikmagalur' means 'The land of the youngest daughter'. Rukmangada, the king of Sakrepatana is said to have given this place as dowry for his youngest daughter. It is a beautiful landscape with forests, farm lands and extensive mountain ranges. The tallest three peaks of Karnatataka are in the Chikmagalur district. Chikmagalur is also a land of coffee. There is a myth behind how coffee came to Chikamagalur.

kudremukh trek base camp

Long, long time ago, an Indian Sufi saint named Baba Budan went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He happened to stay in the famous Yemeni port city of Mocha on the way. He liked the black coloured drink someone had offered to him. He decided to introduce that energizing drink to his homeland. In those times, only the fried Coffee seeds were allowed to be carried abroad from Yemen. So, he hid seven raw coffee seeds in his beard and brought them to India. The plants thus grown in his backyard became the first coffee plantation in India. The usual station Baba Budan used for praying was at Budangiri near Chikamagalur. Today coffee is a big industry here. Karnataka is a leader in coffee production in India.

The base camp of the Kudremukh peak is at Kalasa. Coffee plants start appearing on either side of the road as soon as one starts from Mudigere. Meadows take over the landscape from big trees and plants as we progress towards the destination. The iron-rich soil here is not conducive for the growth of big trees. Only the grasses grow here.

The land of iron

References to the iron ore mines of Kudremukh are there even in the epic 'Ramayana.' Sugreeva, in search of Seetha mentions to his monkey-army about the 'Ayomukh' ranges forming part of the Kudremukh. 'Ayomukh' means rich in iron ore. History has it that the geologist named Sampat Ayyankar, looking for the iron ore deposits mentioned in 'Ramayana,' chanced upon the sight of the shoes of the horses in his team getting stuck on the rock formations by the river Bhadra and thus discovering the mines.

kudremukh trek base camp

The soil of Kudremukh also has the history of 40 years of iron ore mining. The village on the mines, along with about 5000 employees of KIOCL iron ore mining company which at that time was making Rs 800 crore profit, had to shut shop and descend to the plains on environmental concerns. Today, only trekkers coming to see the scenery go up the Kudre heights.

I woke up hearing the announcement "kallasaadalli illibekku" from the bus's conductor. We had reached Kalasa. Kalasa is known as the temple-city of Chikamagalur. I contacted Raje Gowda, the owner of the home-stay at Mullodi on phone after disembarking at Kalasa. He promised to send a jeep in half an hour. In that half an hour, I visited the Kalaseshwara temple which is also known as the Kashi of the South. Legends say that it was here that Lord Shiva gave Sage Agasthya the permission to witness the Shiva-Parvathy wedding. Located in the valley of the river Bhadra, the temple is dedicated to Kalaseshwara.

My stay was arranged at Mullodi. The preferred way is to stay at Mullodi overnight and start trekking early next morning. Mullodi is a small village with less than forty families. Balegal, between Kudremukh and Kalasa is the nearest town to Mullodi. Only jeeps can access the 6 kilometre stretch from Balegal to Mullodi. The only route available is a mud road with treacherous pits and potholes. The required permit for traveling to Mullodi was taken from the forest office at Balegal.

kudremukh trek base camp

Usually, only 50 permits are issued per day. The best way is to obtain the permit the previous day of the intended journey. For the permit to be granted, hiring a licensed guide is mandatory. One could individually hire a guide or be a part of other guided tour groups. The guides normally charge Rs 500/-. I wished the forest officer 'good night' after paying him Rs 600 for the trekking and showing the required identity documents.

Raje Gowda's home-stay is the most popular place to stay in Mullodi. It gets a lot easier as he arranges the jeep service etc for transportation from the confluences. The room had minimum facilities including a camp fire. By the time we arrived, the dinner with 'Neer-Dosai' and 'Sambar' was ready. The taste of the dinner, though vegetarian, deserves special mention. The 'Sambar' here is hotter and is of a deeper shade than what we are used to.

Kottaresh, my companion fell asleep after the heavy meals. I went for a walk. A waterfall nearby could be heard. Upon asking Raje Gowda if we could visit the waterfall, he said he would take us there after the trek. The waterfall is named Somavathi. Special devotional offerings are made here on full-moon Mondays. It is believed that your wishes will be fulfilled if you earnestly pray, taking a dip in the waters here.

Wrapped in winter mist

Kudremukh is in deep slumber. On top of the mountain which is also named Samseparvata, there is said to be a church. The British used to go uphill to the church on horseback to attend the Sunday mass. Kudremukh, literally meaning 'face of a horse' gets its name from this connection to the horses and also because the mountain looks like the face of a horse. Raje Gowda has stories to tell. But the eyes were not willing. The chill breeze and the lullaby of the waterfall fell heavy on the eyelids.

kudremukh trek base camp

Even after the daybreak, the mist did not go away. It looked as though the Sun and the mist had not come fully awake. The grandchildren of Raje Gowda were preparing to play cricket in the courtyard. A dog also joined them. The bowler was a hitherto unknown man. An exchange of smiles and a quick introduction followed. Krishna Gowda was our guide from the forest office. I took a quick shower and readied the backpack for trekking by which time Raje Gowda was ready with the lunch packets. It was 'Puliyogare' (tamarind rice), a local favourite.

The climb begins

It was 7 am. The surroundings were still coming awake. Dew drops dripped from the leaves. We started walking the mud-path behind the homestay. Through ups and downs, the distance on the Kudremukh trekking route is considerable. At normal speed, one can complete the climbing in about 5 hours. There are many narrow walkways branching into the forest. There is a forest check point ahead. The trekking permit details and the number of plastic bottles etc carried were entered in the records there. We continued walking after receiving the guidance from the forest office.

kudremukh trek base camp

The climb was steep. Yellow flowers had blossomed all around. We followed the guide into the forest through the deserted paths. We inhaled the pristine charm of the thick forest into our system. Rare orchids and other flowers captivated the eyes. Our guide waited for us by the side of a brook coming down the hills. We refilled our water bottles there and rested awhile.

The climb continued. We passed by numerous streams and waterfalls and came across a single tree. It was called 'Ondimara' locally. Beyond this tree, the paths became easier.

Green carpeted meadows, clouds descending from the skies in gentle breeze and small forest paths and rivulets make up a spellbinding view of the nature at its best.

Kudremukh was declared a national park in 1987. It is also the second largest wildlife sanctuary in the Western Ghats. If in luck, deer and mountain goats could be spotted grazing.

The last lap of the walk was quite taxing. The path wound around and climbed steeply. Slight drizzle here and there brought some relief. Covering our ears with mufflers etc against the cold breeze, we continued walking.

We reached the pinnacle by 1 pm. The panoramic view of the Kudremukh national park filled the eyes and senses. The picture perfect landscape stretched around us. The breeze and the mist combined and gave it a surreal feel.

Kudremukh is in Chikmagalur district. The literal meaning of the word is 'the land of the youngest daughter.' It is the place which was given as dowry by king Rukmangada.

The soil of Kudremukh also has a history of 40 years of iron ore mining by company named KIOCL.

It is said that Kudremukh got its name from the horse-riding antics of the British and also from the look of the mountain that is shaped like a horse's face.

A Chronicle of Current Events

For human rights & freedom of expression in the ussr, the podrabinek case, dec 1977 to feb 1978 (48.7).

<<No 48 : 14 March 1978>>

On 1 December 1977, the brothers Alexander and Kirill PODRABINEK (CCE 47) and their father Pinkhos Abramovich PODRABINEK were summoned for a chat by Yu.S. Belov, chief of a department at the Moscow City and Regional KGB. Alexander refused to appear.

“On behalf of the Committee for State Security ” (Belov told Kirill and his father Pinkhos Podrabinek)

“I suggest that you and your families leave the Soviet Union and go abroad via Israel within 20 days. There is enough material against you, Kirill Pinkhosovich, to institute criminal proceedings. You, Pinkhos Abramovich, are also known to us for your anti-social activities. An act of humanity is being offered to you both. I advise you to make use of it.”

Alexander (b. 1953) and Kirill Podrabinek (b. 1952)

The same evening Alexander Podrabinek was arrested on the street and taken to the KGB. Belov presented him, too, with an ultimatum: all three must leave the country, otherwise criminal proceedings would be instituted against both brothers.

Belov let it be understood that the absence of an invitation and difficulties with money would not be obstacles. Belov stressed that they could only leave all together.

HOSTAGE-TAKING

Many painful disputes have sprung up around the moral problems arising from KGB’s ultimatums and blackmail. The Chronicle cannot present the arguments but at least it can accurately convey the stance of participants in such events by reproducing all their statements in sufficient detail.

On 6 December 1977, there was a press conference at Andrei Sakharov ’s flat. Pinkhos PODRABINEK read out a “Statement for the Belgrade Conference [note 1] and the Press”:

“A distinctive feature of this case is the KGB’s use of the hostage system. Not one of us can determine his own fate independently, and a decision about the fate of three people has been placed by the KGB on Alexander Podrabinek alone, in whose departure the authorities are most of all interested. “We categorically refuse to accept such conditions and insist on our right to make our choices independently…”

Then Alexander PODRABINEK read out his “Reply” to the KGB’s proposal:

“I would like to draw the attention of the world public to my brother’s painful position and to the dirty tactics of the KGB — tactics of intimidation and terror. The whole world condemns the hijacking of aeroplanes and the taking of passengers as hostages, yet the KGB is using the very same method with regard to my brother, a method commonly used by terrorists. In the situation that has arisen the most painful thing for me is my brother’s fate. “At the KGB they insistently advised me to take advantage of this ‘humane act of the Soviet government’, as they expressed it. I regard this proposal as unconcealed blackmail by the KGB. “They have given me four days to reflect. On 5 December I have to give my reply. A reply that means a great deal to me. “This is my reply.

“I do not wish to go to prison. I value even the semblance of freedom which I possess now. I know that I would be able to live freely in the West and at last receive a real education. I know that there I would not have four agents at my heels, threatening to beat me up or push me under a train.

“Over there, I know, they will not put me in a concentration camp or a psychiatric hospital for attempting to defend people who are denied their rights and oppressed. Over there, I know, one breathes easily. While here one does so with difficulty, and they stop your mouth and stifle you if you speak too loudly. I know that our country is unhappy and doomed to suffering.

“And that is why I am staying.

“I do not want to go to prison, but neither do I fear a camp. I value my own freedom as I value my brother’s, but I am not bargaining for it. I will not give in to any blackmail.

“A clear conscience is dearer to me than material well-being. I was born in Russia. This is my country, and I must remain here, however hard it may be and however easy in the West. As far as I am able, I will go on defending those whose rights are being so brazenly trampled on in our country.

“That is my reply. I am staying.”

After this Alexander Podrabinek added that he would agree to leave the country only if Kirill were to ask him to do so.

On 7 December 1977, Kirill PODRABINEK made a statement:

KGB Blackmail

1. The KGB is using the hostage-taking method. They are basically blackmailing my brother Alexander, while I am the hostage. 2. The very formulation of the question: ‘leave or we will put you in prison’, is contrary to the law. If a man has committed a crime he must be prosecuted. However, in this case the KGB does not want to stage a new political trial but prefers to dispatch us abroad. The KGB has employed a well-calculated device — to exploit the insolubility of a situation with a hostage. All this blackmail is patently a consequence of the public stand taken by our family … “If any one of the three of us is arrested and any charge whatsoever brought against him, it can only be viewed as an act of revenge by the KGB and not as a requirement of justice.”

On 12 December 1977, Kirill Podrabinek informed Belov that he had decided to leave. Belov replied that Kirill could hand in his emigration documents, and on the same day Kirill did so. On 14 December Kirill Podrabinek made an addition to his previous statement:

“On 12 December, I telephoned investigator Belov at the KGB. Permission to go abroad has been granted; there was no mention of my only being able to leave only with my brother. Does this mean that the KGB has given up its hostage-taking and will really allow me to leave? In the very near future this will become clear … In view of all the circumstances, and fearing for my life” (see CCE 47) “I have taken the decision to leave.” *

KIRILL PODRABINEK (b. 1952)

On 27 December 1977, the police in Elektrostal (Moscow Region) brought charges against Kirill Podrabinek under Article 215 (RSFSR Criminal Code: “Illegal possession of arms, ammunition” etc). Kirill refused to sign the record of this charge. Investigator Radygin obtained his written undertaking not to leave town but said he would not need Kirill before the middle of January and, if need be, he could go to Moscow.

When Kirill Podrabinek came out of the Elektrostal police station he was met at the door by KGB Investigator Belov, who had arrived from Moscow. The condition of Kirill’s departure remained unchanged, Belov said, and gave him three days in which to persuade his brother to agree to leave.

From that day onwards, KGB employees began trailing Kirill Podrabinek . (His brother Alexander had been under a similar “escort” since 10 October 1977, see below). The same day 22 Muscovites issued a statement:

“Wishing to force Alexander Podrabinek to leave the country, the KGB is openly blackmailing him with his brother’s fate. A method of hostage-taking used thus far only by irresponsible criminal-terrorists is in the present case being adopted as a weapon by the official representatives of a powerful State. This blackmail clearly demonstrates the value of the charges brought against Kirill Podrabinek. “We call upon our fellow countrymen and world public opinion to protest against the use of hostage-taking, unprecedented in the practice of civilized states. We call upon our fellow countrymen and world public opinion to follow attentively the fate of the Podrabinek family.”

On 28 December Kirill Podrabinek made a statement:

State Terrorism

“… The KGB has resorted to hostage-taking. My brother Alexander has made a statement for the press saying that he does not wish to leave, but he will leave if I so demand. “Under no circumstances will I make this demand of Alexander. In the first place, that would mean becoming a blind instrument of blackmail in the hands of the KGB, exploiting a situation created by them for my own sake. In the second place, it is impossible for me to even ask, let alone demand such a thing. “However, I have resolved to pursue my chosen line of action and try to obtain permission to leave.”

On the evening of 29 December 1977, Kirill Podrabinek was arrested.

On the day of his arrest, he declared a hunger strike. After a few days he was transferred from Elektrostal to Moscow, to the MVD’s detention centre on Matrosskaya Tishina Street.

The first response to Kirill’s arrest was “The Christmas ‘Feat’ of the KGB”, a short article by Victor Nekipelov [note 2]:

“… The arrest of Kirill Podrabinek is an act of deliberate, demonstrative revenge. The authorities know full well that they are thereby dealing the severest blow to both Alexander Podrabinek – Take that for not accepting our offer! – and to his father — While you didn’t steer your sons to a compromise!”

On 1 January 1978, Yevgeny Nikolayev (see “In the Psychiatric Hospitals”, CCE 48.12 ) sent a letter to the RSFSR Procurator’s Office, protesting against the arrest of Kirill Podrabinek.

On 4 January 1978, Alexander and Pinkhos Podrabinek asked Belov for a meeting with Kirill.

Belov refused but promised to pass Kirill a note from them, “if there are no objections on the part of the investigator”. In the note Alexander and his father asked Kirill: “Do you agree to leave if there is no need to ask Alexander to do the same?”

On the same day, at 11.30 pm, Belov came to Elektrostal to see Pinkhos Podrabinek . He informed him that the investigator “had not allowed” the note to be passed to Kirill. If Alexander handed in his application to emigrate within three days, however, all three could leave the USSR. Otherwise, Alexander  would also be arrested. Belov suggested that P.A. Podrabinek go at once to Moscow and persuade Alexander to change his mind: he even gave Pinkhos Abramovich a lift back to Moscow in his car.

On 5 January 1978, Alexander Podrabinek appealed in an open letter to Amnesty International, calling on the organisation to speak out in Kirill’s defence.

On 9 January Alexander Podrabinek telephoned Belov at the KGB. When Belov asked if he intended to leave, Alexander replied that he could only decide this matter together with his brother.

On 15 January 1978, the Christian Committee for the Defence of Believers’ Rights in the USSR called upon “world public opinion” to speak out in defence of Kirill Podrabinek and condemn the policy of hostage-taking.

At the beginning of February 1978, the Podrabineks were summoned to Elektrostal for interrogation in connection with Kirill’s case.

Pinkhos Podrabinek replied to questions about Kirill but refused to sign a record of the interrogation. Alexander declined to answer questions, stating that the case was inspired by the KGB and was being conducted with violations of norms laid down in the Code of Criminal Procedure.

ALEXANDER PODRABINEK (b. 1953)

From 10 October 1977, Alexander Podrabinek was under constant KGB surveillance. Round the clock he was pursued by two cars carrying seven or eight employees of the security services.

Whenever he was inside a building the cars stood in front of the doorway. Whenever he walked along the street or travelled in public transport there were always several agents at his side. They threatened Alexander’s acquaintances and took photographs of them. Sometimes they interfered more actively with the life of their charge: on Sunday 18 December the escort prohibited Alexander from going skiing with friends in the Orekhovo-Borisovo district [Moscow Region]. Podrabinek wrote about this incident to [KGB chairman] Andropov:

“… Since 10 October of this year I have been under the continuous and unconcealed observation of our glorious Chekists. Defending the State’s security, I understand, it is essential for the KGB to search my home, call me as a witness in the case of Yury Orlov, suggest that I leave the USSR, blackmail me, make an attempt on my brother’s life, and do much else to ensure that I do not, accidentally, undermine the foundations of the Soviet political and social system. All this I understand. “I am not even particularly annoyed when one of the eight officers who perpetually watch over me swears he will break my legs or push me under a train. I understand the full difficulty of this highly complex, responsible and dangerous work and do not get angry with these heroic young people who, performing their civic duty, freeze on cold December nights outside the entrance to my house or squeeze after me onto a city bus in the rush-hour. I am enraptured by their daring, their persistence and their indifference to the cold … “Citizen Andropov! On behalf of myself and six of my friends I beg you: Provide your employees with skis and toboggans and, please, teach them how to use them, if they do not know. Then I shall be able to enjoy my on Sundays and the KGB will be able to work normally and not violate the Soviet Constitution. This can only enhance the reputation of our valiant organs and promote their physical development.”

From January 1978, the constant “escort” was replaced from time to time by ‘ordinary’ shadowing.

The security services are trying by any means to prevent Alexander Podrabinek from continuing his activities on the Working Commission (to Investigate the Use of Psychiatry for Political Purposes). In particular, they are hampering him from meeting, in the flats of his Moscow friends, people who have been subjected to “psychiatric persecution” and their relatives. Podrabinek and his friend Dmitry Leontyev , in whose flat he was living, were fined for violating the city residence regulations. Podrabinek was forbidden to continue residing at the flat.

Alexander Podrabinek was warned that he was liable to be charged with “parasitism”. In February 1978, having given his shadow the slip, he managed to get a job as a medical orderly (he is a qualified paramedic).

The pre-trial investigation of Kirill Podrabinek ’s case was completed in February 1978.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

kudremukh trek base camp

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
