27 Things to do in Cebu + Tourist Spots

27 Things to do in Cebu + Tourist Spots

The island of Cebu is one of the most sought after destinations in the Philippines. It is a strategically-located travel hub to the rest of the country that is easily reachable by several modes of transport. The province along with its surrounding islands boasts of spectacular beaches, dive spots, majestic waterfalls, delicious food and so many more. Plus, the capital, Cebu City is a cultural hotspot that you wouldn’t want to miss. With Cebu’s many attractions, it’s no wonder the island is even included in TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Destinations in Asia, in 2019.

Cebu City is quite famous for its cultural heritage sites – such as Magellan’s Cross, Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino, Fort San Pedro, Plaza Independencia, and many more. There are several ancestral houses and museums that you can easily visit as well. The local cuisine is a definite must-try, especially the well-famed Cebu Lechon.

Cebu is also home to mother nature’s artworks and is highly sought after for its diverse marine life. Head on over to the south of Cebu for an exhilarating canyoneering adventure at Kawasan Falls and to Moalboal to swim with thousands of sardines. You can also head up north to the ethereal Bantayan Island for some sky-diving, and to Malapascua Island, to swim with thresher sharks.

All these and more will have you visit Cebu over and over again.

Here’s a list of beautiful places to visit in Cebu including top things to do & the best Cebu tourist spots.

To make your trip planning easy, I’ve added links to the locations on Google Maps. Feel free to click/tap on the links posted. Then, use the “save” feature on the Google Maps app. Seeing all your saved locations on the map will help you get started on planning your Cebu itinerary and know the best areas to stay, near places you want to go.

1. Cebu City

Location : Cebu Island, Central Visayas (Central Philippines) . Save on Google Maps .

Cebu City isn’t known as the “Queen City of the South” for nothing. It’s a lively metropolis but with deep cultural roots. The city is the oldest in the Philippines and it’s home to well-preserved Spanish-colonial heritage sites. A few of the most famous of these sites include Magellan’s Cross, Fort San Pedro, Magellan’s Shrine, Lapu-Lapu Monument, and the oldest church in the Philippines – Basilica del Santo Nino.

The city is also buzzing with local restaurants and trying the local cuisine is one you will enjoy. Treating myself to the world-famous Cebu Lechon is something I always look forward to during my visits. Cebu City is also home to the grandest festival in the country – the Sinulog Festival. Every year, the festival attracts tourists from all over the world during the third weekend of January.

2. Badian Canyoneering & Kawasan Falls

Location : Badian, Southwest Cebu . Save on Google Maps .

Canyoneering is an adrenaline junkie’s dream, and Badian is the perfect place for it, even if you haven’t done it before. It’s a thrilling adventure that lets you fully appreciate the beauty of nature as you travel down the river towards the magnificent Kawasan Falls through swimming, hiking, rappelling, and even cliff diving. It may sound scary, but you have nothing to worry about because the Badian Canyoneering tour package includes safety gear along with accredited and highly trained guides to assist you. It’s an experience I highly recommend you check out since Cebu is one of the few places where you can do this kind of activity.

Kawasan Falls in Badian is the most beautiful waterfall in all of Cebu. Its turquoise waters are absolutely stunning and seeing it is well worth it, even if you won’t go canyoneering. The stunning view is great for picnics with your family. Getting to the picnic grounds on the fall’s basin is an easy trek. It’s only about one and a half kilometers from the main entrance, and you can also hike a little further uphill towards the second and third levels of the waterfall.

Getting to Badian from Cebu City takes about three hours and if you want to maximize your travel time, then you can also book a tour that includes Osmena Peak. You can even travel to Moalboal, which is only about 45 minutes away, or even to Oslob.

3. Osmeña Peak

Location : Dalaguete, Southcentral Cebu . Save on Google Maps .

Standing at 1,013 meters above sea level, Osmena Peak is the highest, easily reachable point in Cebu. You’ll fall in love with the breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding areas – from unique rock formations, jagged-edged mountains with limestone cliffs, to endless farmlands and even the serene coastline.

The 700-meter hike to the summit of Osmena Peak is relatively easy, even for first-timers. The trek is well marked and takes less than half an hour. Most people visit Osmena Peak at around sunrise, but it can get foggy early in the morning during the colder months, so visiting before the rainy season would be more optimal. Any time in the morning or just before sunset would also be great for pictures because of the lighting. Also, try to visit during weekdays because Osmena Peak can be very busy with tourists during weekends.

Osmena Peak is located in Brgy. Mantalongon, Dalaguete. Dalaguete is about three hours south of Cebu City. There are many entry points to get there, and one of the best ways is to travel from Moalboal, which is just a short drive away from both Kawasan Falls and Osmena Peak. There are plenty of places to stay in and at Moabal that caters to different budgets; plus the town is also close to Oslob.

4. Bantayan Island

Location : Northern Cebu . Save on Google Maps .

Off the northernmost tip of Cebu is another hidden gem that will make you want to extend your trip. Bantayan Island is the perfect getaway from the big crowds of the city and other tourist destinations.

Bantayan Island is truly a paradise to behold. The wide stretch of fine white sand beaches and tranquil clear waters are breathtaking and you get to have them all to yourselves. Aside from idyllic and serene beach trips to Paradise Beach and Kota Beach and Sandbar, there are plenty of activities to do here as well – from kayaking to cliff diving and even sky-diving. You can also go island hopping to Virgin Island, Hilantagaan Island, and Kinatarkan Island.

The island also has a rich cultural history. The name Bantayan comes from the term “Bantayan ng Hari” which means “Watchtowers of the King.” There were 18 watchtowers built here during the Spanish. You can also visit the century-old churches here. If you love fresh seafood, you’ll be in for a gastronomic treat because the island is a major fishing community that supplies the freshest catch. They are also quite famous for their dried fish, locally known as “danggit.”

The best time to enjoy the island is from February to May. Although the island is tropically warm during most of the year, I suggest you try to avoid the months of June to September, which is usually the Philippines’ monsoon season.

The easiest way to get to Bantayan Island is through a charter plane at Mactan Airport via Air Juan that only takes 40 minutes. Don’t worry if you don’t have the budget for it because you can still reach the island via a direct bus from Cebu City. The bus will take you directly to the municipality of Santa Fe on the island and you wouldn’t have to book a ferry (RoRo) ride separately. Alternatively, you can also take a bus that can drop you off at Hagnaya Port where you can ride the ferry to the island. Travel time by bus+ferry from Cebu City is around 6 hours.

Bantayan Island offers diverse accommodations, ranging from budget-friendly fan rooms to luxurious resorts. I suggest you stay at least a night or two so you can enjoy everything the island has to offer. If you have an extra day, you can even visit the nearby Malapascua Island.

5. Mactan Island Resorts

Shangri-la Mactan Resort, Cebu

Location : Lapu-lapu City & Cordova, Mactan Island, Metro Cebu . Save on Google Maps .

Although Mactan Island is often overlooked in the top island destinations of the Philippines, the island is actually a great vacation spot for travelers. The island’s proximity to the airport is perfect for laid back vacationers that want to enjoy the comfort of modern living. Mactan Island is teeming with world-class resorts that offer luxurious amenities that even include white-sand beaches. Some of the most top-rated destinations here include Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort, Plantation Bay Resort, Movenpick Hotel Mactan, Crimson Resort and Jpark Island Resort and Waterpark. There are other resorts here that are more pocket-friendly as well. If you’re up for some island hopping, then there are several islands that can easily be reached from the resorts here.

Just a short ride from the Mactan Island resorts are two of the most historical places in Cebu – Magellan’s Shrine and Lapu-Lapu Monument. Magellan’s Shrine was built in honor of Ferdinand Magellan. Just meters aways is Lapu-Lapu Monument, a bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu, recorded as the first Filipino to resist colonization. Together, the two make up the Mactan Shrine and is believed to be the site where Magellan was killed.

6. TOPS Lookout Cebu

Location : Brgy. Busay (hills), Cebu City . Save on Google Maps .

One of the best ways to enjoy a panoramic view of the city’s skyline is at Tops Lookout. The Tops Lookout, or just Tops for short, is a fortress-like view deck with a modernist twist and offers a serene and romantic ambiance. The stone structure has a unique circular design with ring-like entrances that separate the rooms where you can lounge around or even enjoy a picnic, as the place also offers snacks, beer, and other refreshments. The landscaping is also unique because of the hexagonal concrete floor patterns lined with Bermuda grass. There are several benches and binoculars that you can use to appreciate the view. Although the best time to appreciate the view is around sunrise or sunset, the view is still breathtaking even when the sun is already up. Personally, I prefer going there before sunset and extending into the night to enjoy both the daytime and nighttime views.

Tops Lookout is located in Mt. Busay, about 20 minutes from JY Square Mall. You can take a motorcycle, a taxi or by private cars. If you take public transport, you’ll have to book them to wait for you, so expect that cab fare can be very expensive. You might be able to save some money by booking a tour that includes Tops among the destinations.

7. Cebu Taoist Temple

Location : Beverly Hills Subdivision, Cebu City . Save on Google Maps .

The towering, multi-tiered Taoist Temple in Cebu is an impressive cultural site that shouldn’t be missed, especially if it’s your first time visiting Cebu. The temple was built in 1972 by the Chinese community in Cebu and is the center of worship for Taoism on the island. The Taoist Temple is located in the upscale Beverly Hills Subdivision. The main temple stands at 270 meters above sea level and holds spacious balconies that offer a beautiful view of the metropolis. The main temple is open to both worshippers and non-worshippers and thanks to its astonishing architecture has become a landmark to tourists and locals alike. Inside the grounds, is another temple that is closed to the public – the Phu Sian Temple.

Cebu’s Taoist Temple is of traditional Chinese architecture and decorated with dragons and intricate wood carvings. At the entrance of the temple is a replica of the Great Wall of China. From here are three winding roads that lead to the main temple that houses the central altar filled with statues of Chinese gods and goddesses, a library, a wishing well, and even a souvenir shop.

In order to make a wish, Taoist rituals dictate that you would have to pray to gods. The ritual includes washing your hands, going barefoot when you enter the temple, and dropping two wooden blocks. If both blocks land face up, only then can you make a wish. If they do not, then you would need to come back again at another time to make your wish. You can also ask for guidance by using the wooden blocks. Another common ritual among devotees is the climbing of the temple’s 81 steps, which represent the Taoism scriptures’ 81 chapters, and then lighting joss sticks to have their fortune read by the monks. This ritual is only done on Sundays and Wednesdays. Aside from the majestic structures, alluring landscapes, and scenic views of the city, experiencing the rituals is a great way to spend your day in the Queen City of the south.

You can get to Cebu’s Taoist Temple by car, or by taxi. You can also take a motorcycle from JY Square Mall, but you would have to walk from the entrance of the subdivision to get there.

8. Temple of Leah, Cebu

Temple of Leah in Cebu City

Often dubbed as the Taj Mahal of Cebu, the Temple of Leah was also borne out of love. It was built by Teodorico Soriano Adarna to signify his undying love and devotion for his late wife Leah Albino-Adarna. Both of whom are the grandparents of actress Ellen Adarna. In terms of architecture, the place however is very different from the Taj Mahal. Instead, The Temple of Leah will give you a taste of Greece. Inspired by the ancient Roman structures, the temple is seven stories high with massive Doric columns made of granite. At the center of the driveway is a huge marble fountain and dotted on the corners of the building are life-sized Grecian statues. Leading to the shrine are two golden lions, and inside the shrine is a nine-foot bronze statue of Leah when she was chosen as the Matron Queen of her alma mater, the University of Southern Philippines. The building has 24 chambers including a library, a bar, and a museum. All of the areas are worth a snap or two.

The Temple of Leah is located at the top of a hill in Brgy. Busay, Cebu, and is about 45 minutes away from the city. If you want to have stunning photos of the site’s ornate and grand structures without being photobombed by other tourists, I suggest you go there just when it opens at 7:00 AM. The Temple of Leah is easily accessible by car and public transport, even by “habal-habal” (motorcycle taxi) from JY Square Mall.

10. Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro, Cebu

Location : A. Pigafetta Street / M.J. Cuenco Ave., Downtown Cebu City . Save on Google Maps .

Known as the smallest and oldest fort in the country, Fort San Pedro is a welcome retreat in the heart of a bustling metropolis. Its earliest structure was made out of logs just days after the arrival of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi on the island. The fort has undergone many changes and its present structure dates back to the 18th century. Through the years it has served as a garrison for the army, a stronghold for rebels, a prison and even a city zoo.

The walls of the triangular fort are about 20 feet tall, and 8 feet wide. On each corner stands a bastion and a watchtower. There are 14 cannons scattered amidst the tall trees and ornamental plants inside the fort. Even just a short visit to Fort San Pedro can take you back a trip back in time as you enjoy its peaceful ambiance and historic structures.

To the right of Fort San Pedro and just a short walk from Magellan’s Cross is the iconic Plaza Independencia. Plaza Independencia is witness to some of the most significant moments in the history of Cebu and symbolizes Cebu’s freedom from all who have tried to conquer the island. The century-old trees around the area have truly witnessed the heritage of the plaza. In the early 1600s, the public square was known as Plaza de Armas because of the military training and parades that took place here. In less than a century and now known as Plaza Mayor, the plaza has expanded to include Cebu’s cathedral. During the Spanish colonization, it was renamed as Plaza Maria Cristina to honor their Queen. To symbolize the freedom from the Spaniards, the American renamed it to Plaza Libertad. With the Philippines finally free from the reign of other nations, the Plaza was renamed as Plaza Independencia. The plaza’s beautiful landscapes and rich history make it a great place for sightseeing.

11. Magellan’s Cross

Magellan's Cross

Location : P. Burgos St., Downtown Cebu City . Save on Google Maps .

One of the most historic places in Cebu is Magellan’s Cross. The cross symbolizes the birth of Christianity in the Philippines. It was planted upon Ferdinand’s Magellan’s orders to signify the spread of Roman Catholicism when he arrived in the Philippines in 1521. It is believed that the original cross had miraculous healing properties and people started to chip it away. Thus, it was encased in a cross made of tindalo wood that now stands here, but some skeptics believed that the original cross was destroyed after the death of Magellan. The cross is housed in an ornate octagonal-shaped chapel with paintings on the ceiling that depict Magellan’s arrival, the planting of the cross, and the baptism of Rajah Humabon, Queen Juana and their subjects. Although its authenticity has often been questioned, Magellan’s Cross still holds an important part in history and has remained to be a popular pilgrimage site, not just for locals but for tourists as well.

12. Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu

Basilica del Santo Niño, Cebu

Location : Osmeña Blvd, Downtown Cebu City . Save on Google Maps .

Just a short walk from Magellan’s cross is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines – the Basilica Minor del Santo Nino de Cebu. Also often known as the Sto. Nino Basilica, the church was founded in 1565 and houses the oldest religious relic that honors the Holy Child Jesus (Santo Niño). This relic dates back to Magellan’s time and is said to be the same one that he presented to Rajah Humabon when he and Queen Juana were baptized on April 14, 1521. The relic is believed to have been found on the very site where the basilica stands. It was found encased on a wooden box by a soldier 40 years after Magellan’s arrival when Miguel Lopez de Legaspi invaded the village.

The basilica’s original structure was destroyed by a fire and the present building was rebuilt in 1735 and finished in 1739. In 1965, Pope Paul VI declared the church as a basilica and as “the symbol of the birth and growth of Christianity in the Philippines” and was also declared as a National Landmark by President Ferdinand Marcos. The Holy See has also designated the basilica as “Mother and Head of all Churches in the Philippines.” The present structure now includes a pilgrimage center, a convent, a museum, and a library.

13. Crown Regency Sky Experience

Location : Osmeña Blvd, Cebu City . Save on Google Maps .

If you want a unique adventure in the Queen City of the South, then the Crown Regency Sky Experience is for you. The numerous rides in the city’s tallest building will definitely not disappoint whether you try them out in the morning or at night. The Edge Coaster is the Sky Experience’s top attraction and it’s the only amusement ride of its kind in the world. The two-seated ride goes around the edge of the building’s 38th floor, and riders can enjoy the view of the city at 130 meters in the sky. There’s even a control lever where you can tilt the seat 55 degrees towards the ground. Other must-try rides include the Skywalk Extreme, where you can walk, sit or even lie down on the floors at the edge of the building, and the Tower Zip that lets you zipline between two towers. The Tower Zip is the first zipline in the world that uses a fully automated braking system for a smoother stop. If you want a bit of extreme wall climbing, then you’ll have an exhilarating time in the Paramount Wall Climb and Cliff Hanger at the top of the 40-story building. With the wind blowing and the amazing view, you’ll definitely feel like you’re on top of a towering mountain.

Even if you’re not in for a thrilling ride, you can still enjoy the stunning view from the building in the Sky Observatory, where you can operate telescopes. You can also climb to the Vertex, the highest point of the building for an amazing 360-degree view of the busy metropolis.

If you’re afraid of heights, Crown Regency also offers amenities that are less heart-racing. There’s even a three-level playroom for smaller kids. The 6D Theater is a favorite among families and will let you experience movies that will tickle all of your senses through motion seats, and special effects such as rain and wind. There’s also Melvin’s Reef where you can enjoy mini-golf with a black-light under the sea experience. Or you can enjoy a world-class meal at the Sparkz Restobar, or lounge around with some refreshments at the Sky Bar or Dimensions Cafe. At the Crown Regency Sky Experience, there’s definitely something for everyone!

14. Try Cebu Lechon & the local food in Cebu

Cebu Lechon House - Carcar Lechon

Of all my trips to Cebu, the one thing I make sure I never skip on is enjoying the local food! Especially the Lechon! Even though you can widely find Lechon or roasted pig in the country, most people would agree that the best one they ever tasted is in Cebu. Even the world-famous American chef, Anthony Bourdain has declared Cebu’s Lechon as the “best pig ever” when he visited the country. So what makes this mouthwatering dish special? The young pork filled with secret herbs and spices and slowly roasted over coal is cooked to perfection that there’s no need for sauce. Yup, the Cebuanos have definitely got that crunchy skin and flavorful juicy meat combo just right. What’s great is that you can easily get a taste of it because many restaurants serve it warm with crackling skin and tender juicy meat. Locals will argue which restaurant serves the best because there are many favorites all around the island but you wouldn’t go wrong with Zubochon, CNT, Rico’s Lechon, Cebu’s Original Lechon Belly, and Ayers Lechon.

Locals also claim that the Lechon in Carcar, Cebu is unparalleled, even calling it the “Queen of All Lechon.” It’s jammed-pack with flavors because the pig is bathed in a special mix of ingredients that include pork broth, roasted pig drippings and “patios” an herb indigent to Carcar. But you can’t simply get it at fancy restaurants, because the best ones are served in their public markets. While you’re there, don’t forget to get some of Carcar’s famous chicharon. They have two versions of the crispy pork cracklings – pure skin or “kubal” and chicharon with “laman” or meat. Carcar may be an hour from Cebu City, but their Lechon and chicharon is worth the stopover.

Siomai sa Tisa

Aside from the Lechon and chicharon, there are plenty of other local foods you will enjoy. Strolling around the city wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Larsian sa Fuente, the original home of Cebu street food. It’s the go-to BBQ place for locals from all walks of life, and a must-try for tourists. Your eyes will go wide and your mouth will water as you take a pick from all kinds of meat that you can have barbequed – from typical the chicken and pork meat cuts, to innards, liver and cheeks. They also have longanisa, sausages, muttons and fresh seafood. And they’re best served with “puso” or steamed rice wrapped in coconut leaves. Larsian is an open-spaced establishment that has a lively ambiance that’s perfect for get-togethers. What’s even better is that the place has recently been renovated to provide a better dining experience. It’s located right in the heart of the city, beside Chung Hua Hospital and is quite easy to get to. Most of the food stalls serve food from around 10 AM to 2 AM, but the place is open 24 hours daily.

If you’re looking for a gastronomic adventure at affordable prices, then the Sugbo Mercado at Cebu I.T. Park is the place for you. It’s the biggest weekend food market in Cebu, and offers a wide variety of food – from local cuisines and delicacies, international flavors, and to unique and upcoming food trends. Treating yourself to a warm, and sumptuous meal here is certainly an exciting way of ending your day in Cebu. They are open on Thursdays to Sundays, from 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Due to the growing demand, Sugbo Mercado also recently launched “StreetFood” at the Ayala Center Cebu’s active zone garden. The numerous stalls all serve authentic, high-quality street food including Cebuano staples like dirty ice cream, manok bisaya, balut, tuslob-buwa and ngohiong. And, they are open from 12 noon to 12 midnight, every single day of the week.

Food has always been deeply embedded in Filipino culture, and it is no different in the Queen City of the South. Aside from the Spanish and Chinese influence that has shaped the local cuisine, the buzzing city is also a hotspot for restaurants that offer unique and modern flavors. Why not try visiting Senor Kimchi, The Pig & Palm, The Pyramid or Birdseed? Other interesting restaurants that you can only find in Cebu include the 10,000 Roses Cafe, Balay sa Busay, Bintana, Gorliz, The Oriental Spice Gourmet and La Vie Parisienne. Trust me, even with just the food alone, you will love coming back to Cebu over and over again.

15. Mactan Island Hopping

Gilutongan (Hilutongan) & Nalusuan Island near Mactan, Cebu

Location : Hilotungan Channel. Between Mactan, Cebu & Bohol Islands . Save on Google Maps .

If you’re up for some saltwater therapy and don’t have the luxury of time for traveling to the ends of the province, then Mactan Island is the perfect jump-off point for you. Sprinkled on the channel between Cebu and Bohol are several stunning islands with vibrant and diverse marine life, and you can easily reach them via Mactan.

First off the list is Hilutungan Marine Reserve. The reserve is one of the richest sanctuaries in terms of marine diversity, and it’s a matchless spot for both snorkeling and diving. Even if you’re not up for these activities, you can still enjoy the stunning marine life from the boat because of the crystal clear waters around the shallow areas of the reserve. For seasoned divers, there’s even more in store for you because Hiltungan is known for sighting turtles along with snappers, parrotfish, jackfish, and many more.

Not far from Hilutungan Marine Reserve is another pristine island with a colorful aquatic life – Nalusuan Island. The island is part of Olango Reef and has a long white sandbar where you can easily swim with tons of fish and a protected coral area where you can snorkel. Also belonging to the Olango Reef is Caohagan Island. It’s a tiny island that’s just about two meters above sea level during high tide. Aside from enjoying the sea life through its crystal waters, the island is also an excellent stopover for a sumptuous meal of freshly-caught seafood. You can take your pick among the various kinds of live clams, shellfish, fishes, and rare seafood being displayed by locals and have them cooked on the spot.

Another great place to see is Olango Island. It’s only about 15 minutes away from Mactan Island, and it’s famous for birdwatching. The best time to visit the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is during the colder months or around November to February. During this time, migratory birds from Japan, Northern China, and Serbia often make a stop. Other attractions in Olango include the Caw-Oy Floating Restaurant, San Vicente Marine Sanctuary, Island Eco-Tourism Park and several beach resorts.

South of Olango Island is Pandanon Island. It’s actually part of Bohol, but it’s close proximity to Mactan makes it a frequent tourist spot. Its long stretch of white sand beaches and serene waters makes the island ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and for quick getaways with your family and friends.

17. Sirao-Celosia Flower Garden

Location : Brgy. Sirao, Cebu City . Save on Google Maps .

Known as the “Little Amsterdam of Cebu,” the Sirao Flower Garden has rapidly gained attention as one of Cebu’s top attractions because of the abundance of its blooming flowers and well-placed decor. The garden is filled with flame-like celosia flowers that range from yellow, red, orange, pink, and purple. You can also see some sunflowers, mums, daisies and asters. Aside from taking photos amidst the flowers, another favorite spot is the giant hand with a scenic mountain view in the background. Other interesting decors include giant nests, wooden arches, a windmill, and a lot more.

The best time to enjoy the blooms is when the sun is up. The garden is especially stunning during peak season, which is from April to May, and from October to November. You can get to Sirao Garden Farm by taxi or hired car from Cebu City. If you’re on a tighter budget, you can also ride a jeepney to JY Square Mall, and take a “habal-habal” from there.

Fountain at Temple of Leah in Cebu, Philippines

Hailed as the Taj Mahal of Cebu, the Temple of Leah has become one of the most famous landmarks in Cebu. This magnificent building is a sight to behold and a favorite spot for taking Instagram-worthy shots.

If you’re up for a  Cebu hillside tour , the Temple of Leah is an excellent place to start. Located in the hills of Busay in Cebu City, the Temple of Leah is a towering seven-story building inspired by ancient Roman architecture.

Said to have cost over PHP 80 Million, this grand structure boasts granite floors, Doric columns, a marble fountain, and several Grecian-style statues.

However, its most photographed features are the two golden lions by the main stairs and the nine-foot bronze statue of Leah V. Albino-Adarna, for whom the temple was built. Similar to the Taj Mahal of India, the Temple of Leah was constructed as a symbol of the undying love of Teodorico Soriano Adarna for his late wife, Leah.

However, unlike the Taj Mahal, the Temple of Leah is not a tomb. The 24 chambers of the Temple of Leah house the namesake's massive collection of antiques, art, Chinese jars, and books. The temple is open to the public, so be sure to stop by and be entranced by this grand gesture of love.

Beautiful flowers by the lake at Sirao Garden in Cebu, Philippines

Another excellent Instagram-worthy spot in Cebu’s hillside is Sirao Garden. Dubbed the “Little Amsterdam” of Cebu, this picturesque flower farm is located in the highlands of Busay.

The colorful blooms of Sirao Garden will surely make you want to whip out your camera and take thousands of photos. You can find rows of sunflowers, hyacinths, chrysanthemums, daisies, and asters in Sirao Garden. The main attraction, though, is the vibrant and multicolored celosia flowers.

Also known as wool flowers or cockscomb, the celosia flowers that were first planted in Sirao Garden were initially meant to be harvested and sold during All Souls Day. But thanks to a fortunate turn of events, the celosias were never harvested, and instead, the farm was turned into a park.

The flower farm first attracted locals who wanted to take photos with the beautiful blooms. But soon enough, the word spread, and hoards of travelers began flocking to the spot.

Now, Sirao Garden not only has rows of colorful flora, but it also features replicas of Dutch windmills, as well as a viewing deck.

Magellan's Cross in Cebu, Philippines

If you’re planning to  visit historic Cebu spots , Magellan’s Cross is an excellent place to start. The province of Cebu has a rich history, and it has witnessed several monumental events. One such event is the birth of Catholicism in the Philippines, marked by Magellan’s planting of a cross on the island.

The Portuguese explorer Magellan is attributed with bringing Catholicism to the Philippine Archipelago. History books tell the story of how Magellan reached Cebu in 1521, planted a crucifix, and successfully converted the natives to Christianity. The city of Cebu soon grew around that historical site.

Magellan's Cross is housed in a Spanish-style octagonal pavilion in front of the Cebu City Hall. The large wooden cross displayed in the pavilion is made of Tingalo Wood and is said to be encasing the original cross inside of it.

The unique crucifix was seen as a miraculous relic, so natives started chipping away pieces as a souvenir. To protect the cross, the 10-feet replica was built to encase it. Today, the replica stands atop a marble podium with a plaque that states that this was the very site where the original crucifix was planted on April 21, 1521.

9. take a leisurely hike to osmeña peak.

Sunset at the Osmeña Peak in Cebu, Philippines

Standing at 1,013 meters above sea level, Osmeña Peak is Cebu’s highest. The peak is one of several spire-like formations comprising the Mantalongon Mountain Range in Dalaguete. The town of Dalaguete is known as the “Vegetable Basket of Cebu” because of the crops it supplies to the whole province. En route the peak during your Osmeña Peak trek, you will pass by several vegetable farms and see livestock grazing the terrain.

The picturesque trail to Osmeña Peak is an easy leisurely hike that takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Once you reach the top of Osmeña Peak, you will be greeted by a stunning jagged skyline, a panoramic view of Cebu’s southeast coastline, and a glimpse of Negros. It can be windy at the peak, so take care not to lose your footing.

The craggy rock formations and the breathtaking vista of South Cebu and distant Negros Oriental at the summit will surely make the trek to the top worth it.

Mantalongon, Dalagutes is also dubbed as the “Summer Capital of Cebu” due to its chilly climate. Many local travelers from the lowland cities come to the scenic Osmeña Peak to escape the summer heat. You may want to bring a light jacket if you’ll be hiking early in the morning, as it can get cold during this time.

Inside the Simala Church in Sibonga, Cebu

Nestled in the hills of Simala, Sibonga in Cebu is the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, popularly known as the Simala Shrine and Cebu’s Castle Church. As the name title implies, the sprawling religious complex looks like a castle by the hillside.

Simala Shrine first rose to popularity when the word spread about the miraculous Virgin Mary statue it houses. Several Catholic and Marian Devotees flocked to Simala to pay their respects and pray for miracles and the Virgin’s intercession.

As its fame increased, the church began a series of renovations that transformed its once humble chapel into a grand castle-like shrine.

Today, Simala Shrine attracts foreign and local travelers. There is a testimonial hall wherein stories of devotees’ answered prayers are posted. You will also find a “Dagkutanan” (a candle-lighting area), where you can light multicolored candles and say a prayer.

If you don’t mind long queues, you can see and kiss the miraculous Virgin Mary statue up close.

Whether you are a devout Catholic or you want to admire the scenery and see Cebu's Castle Church, you are welcome at Simala Shrine. Just observe silence and be respectful while you are on the premises.

Additionally, the shrine has a strict dress code. When you visit Simala Church, don't wear shorts, skirts, crop tops, or any body-hugging and revealing garments. You can join a historical excursion in Cebu with a stop at Simala Shrine if you want to visit other tourist spots as well.

The temple has an elevation of 110 feet above sea level and features a facade that is inspired by the Great Wall of China.

The Cebu Taoist Temple is the center of worship for the followers of the ancient teachings of the Chinese Philosopher Lao Zi.

Devotees visit the temple to light joss sticks, have the monks read their fortune, perform rituals, and pray for the gods to grant their wishes. Unlike the neighboring Phu Sian Temple, the Cebu Taoist Temple is open to worshippers and non-worshipers alike.

You can explore the three winding routes of the temple and climb the 81 steps that represent the 81 chapters of the Taoist scripture. The temple complex has a chapel, a wishing well, a library, and a souvenir shop as well.

Lechon at House of Lechon in Carcar, Cebu

A visit to Cebu won’t be complete without trying out its trademark meat: Lechon. Truly, Lechon is the ultimate pork dish and is one of the must-try Philippine cuisine . It is perfected by slow-roasting a pig over a charcoal pit.

The native pigs used are stuffed with lemongrass, tomato, vinegar, and a mixture of local herbs and spices. You can find Lechon anywhere in the Philippines. However, Cebu's Lechon is recognized nationwide as the best.

  • Book a  Cebu food and historical tour

Cebu's Lechon is famous for its signature crispy skin and the juiciest, most flavorful meat that will make you crave more as soon as you taste it.

Unlike other versions of Lechon, Cebu’s version is so savory that you don’t need any sauce to pair it with. It’s best eaten with puso (a local term for “heart”) or rice in heart-shaped coconut fronds.

The best Lechon is said to be from Carcar, a municipality two hours away from Cebu. If you can't make it to Carcar, there are notable Cebu restaurants and take-out counters in Mactan and Cebu City that offer Lechon based on the Carcar recipe.

Among them are Rico's and House of Lechon. Other famous Cebu Lechon joints include Zubuchon and CnT. If you can't eat pork, there are also restaurants offering Cebu halal food .

Diver at the Sardine Run in Moalboal, Cebu

A popular tourist spot on the province’s southwestern coast,  Moalboal is best known for its Sardine Run . Imagine swimming amidst millions of sardines in crystal clear waters. If you’re lucky, you may even swim with turtles while snorkeling.

Travelers who experienced this underwater marvel have described it as a breathtaking and surreal experience. White sand beach of Carnaza Island in Cebu, Philippines

Malapascua isn’t the only thing worth seeing in Daanbantayan. One of the newest tourist spots in Cebu, Carnaza Island is two hours away from Malapascua and is a beautiful tourist destination in itself. Spanning 173 hectares, you won’t run out of things to see on this turtle-shaped island.

Carnaza Island boasts mangrove swamps, lagoons, rolling hills, and forested terrain amid the Visayan Sea. The island's beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters will entice you to take the plunge. There are also caves you can explore and a cliff where you can catch a bird's-eye-view of the island.

You should also check out Skull Cave, where you can find an actual human skull. According to locals, the cave was used as a shelter for Japanese soldiers during World War 2. Sunsets are pretty dramatic here as well, as are nights when stars show up on the horizon unbridled.

When on Carnaza Island, be sure to visit Liog-Liog Twin Beach and the secluded Kailina Beach.

Facade of the Fort San Pedro in Cebu, Philippines

Cebu has a rich history. Luckily, structures that give us a glimpse of the past remain standing to this day. One such structure is Fort San Pedro. This stone fort served as a military defense structure in Cebu during the Spanish occupation.

The original fort was made of wood; it was later replaced with stone in the 17th century to fight off Muslim raiders. The stone structure that still stands dates today was built in 1738 and is considered the oldest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines.

Fort San Pedro is located in the pier area of Cebu City. It has two sides facing the sea and one side facing what is now called Plaza Independencia.

The three bastions of Fort San Pedro are named La Concepcion (southwest), Ignacio de Loyola (southeast), and San Miguel (northeast). The fourteen cannons that were mounted on those bastions are still there today.

Now, Fort San Pedro is a museum dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Spanish Government. You can find several artifacts, such as Spanish documents, sculptures, and paintings. Aside from perusing the exhibits, you can also have a picnic inside the fort or explore the walkways on the three bastions of Fort San Pedro.

16. Join a Birdwatching Tour in Olango Island

Olango Island has been declared a wildlife sanctuary. It is endowed with a diverse coastal ecosystem: large sandy beaches, coral reefs, and a mangrove forest that is recognized as the most extensive in the whole of Cebu Province.

This 4,482-hectare protected island is a flyway for migratory birds. If you visit from November to February, you can go birdwatching here, where you may witness 97 species of birds flocking to the island.

If you’re looking for the ultimate Cebu food trip, don’t pass up the opportunity to experience Larsian at Fuente Osmeña in Cebu City.  Larsian is Cebu’s 24-hour barbecue heaven. It is a market-style dining strip similar to a “dampa” where you pick your food and have it cooked for you.

The best part is that the food here is delightfully affordable. You can choose from several stalls that offer a wide selection of ready-to-grill fare.

  • Book a  10-day Davao to Cebu to Siargao Philippine tour package

You can go for different types of pork and chicken barbecue or have grilled seafood such as squid. When you dine at Larsian, be sure to try the savory yet sweet Chorizo de Cebu.

Chorizo de Cebu is a pork sausage made from lean ground pork, ground pork fat, sugar, anise liqueur, and several local spices. It has a distinctly red color because of the achuete seeds.

This mouthwatering local favorite is a must-try. Aside from barbecue, you can also taste local dishes such as "larang," a local fish stew that's perfect for chilly evenings.

Museo Sugbo in Cebu, Philippines

The old coral-stone structure of Museo Sugbo formerly held Cebu's convicted felons. The galleries of Museo Sugbo were previously Carcel de Cebu or the provincial jail of Cebu from 1870 to 2004.

Today, the chambers of Museo Sugbo house a wide array of well-preserved artifacts that tell the history of Cebu. Each room is dedicated to a specific period in Cebu's history.

The American-era gallery boasts an interesting collection of letters and memorabilia from the Thomasite teachers who arrived in the Philippines in 1901.

There is also a World War II gallery that contains an American Bomb that was dropped in Cebu, Japanese propaganda newspapers, and a Purple Heart and Bronze Star awarded to the local hero, Uldrico Cabahug.

If you want to learn about the political history of the country, Museo Sugbo's presidential gallery is a great place to start. This gallery features portraits of Philippine presidents with their signatures engraved in 24-karat gold-plated metal.

You can also find various archeological artifacts from excavations in Cebu, including gold and ceramics from the famous San Diego shipwreck of 1600. History buff or not, you'll surely be fascinated by the exhibits at Museo Sugbo.

Another place you can add to your  tour of Cebu's historic spots is the Yap-San Diego Ancestral House in Parian, Cebu City. Built during the Spanish colonial era, the Yap-Sandiego house is believed to be one of the oldest houses in the Philippines.

It was constructed out of coral stone, Molave and Balayong wood, terracotta, and glued using egg whites sometime between 1675 and 1700.

The Yap-San Diego Ancestral House was initially owned by a Chinese merchant named Don Juan Yap and his wife, Doña Maria Florido. Albeit weather-beaten, the house survived many generations of the Yap-Sandiego clan.

In 2008, it was formally turned over to the care of Val Sandiego, who initiated a careful restoration of the house and opened it to the public.

The 2-story Yap-San Diego Ancestral House now displays the treasured collections of the family, such as contemporary and ancient artwork and antique pieces, such as furniture and religious icons. You can also find life-sized statues and images of saints around the house.

Udlom Falls is one of the tallest waterfall in Cebu and the most visited falls among the others in the area as well as the Sinungkulan.

Kamangon cave is just walk away from Sinungkulan Falls. The cave has stalactites and stalagmites. It was named Kamangon (Crawl) because you had to crawl in order to get through and even inexperienced can explore the place which was one of the reasons why Philippine Speleological Society hosted the National Mounting Climbing Congress there.

Aside from this cave, there are also others like Pangi, Limod, Udlon, Kabyaw, Nagkawa, and Naglapas.

Meanwhile, Barangay Tajao will make your mouth-watery. You can enjoy and taste delicious food at Bugsay Resto Grill and Aqua Venture. They had floating cottages, a restaurant, accoustic music and aquasports! All in one right?

13 Amazing Things To Do In Danao, Cebu

13 Amazing Things To Do In Danao, Cebu

Danao – a city known for its homemade guns – isn’t the first place that comes into mind when people think of travel destinations in Cebu.  For years, the city of Danao has been overshadowed by the famed South Cebu attractions.  Naïve and close-minded, the younger version of me once thought there weren’t a lot of fun and blissful things to do in Danao, Cebu.

But, guess what? I eventually found out that the city is actually blessed with a wealth of natural wonders and man-made marvels for the intrepid and open-minded explorers. As a matter of fact, it’s today officially one of my go-to local destinations when I badly need a heavy dose of adventure.

From picture-perfect summits to family-friendly resorts, there’s absolutely no shortage of incredible things to do in Danao, Cebu.

Things to do in Danao, Cebu

Truthfully, I’ve barely scratched the surface, when it comes to exploring Danao, Cebu. Even so, I’ve come up with a few tips and suggestions to help you experience a rocking trip in Danao, Cebu. So, if you’re planning to visit this city, make sure to check out these amazing things to do in Danao, Cebu.

1. Climb Licos Peak

Licos Peak is my personal favorite and no doubt one of the most exciting things to do in Danao, Cebu. Despite its modest elevation and short trail, climbing this unsung mountain can be quite a thrill. With loose soils and a steep trail, getting to the top is an adventure in itself.

You’ll have to scramble, hold on to roots, and even hug trees just to reach the peak.

san fernando cebu tourist attractions

And, once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning bird’s eye views of the verdant landscapes of Northern Cebu. What’s more, there are plenty of eye-catching and wondrous rock formations at the top.

san fernando cebu tourist attractions

After climbing Licos Peak, you may also hike all the way to Lanigid Hill in Liloan, Cebu, to complete a fun-filled hike.

2. Hike Mount Manghilao

No list of the best things to do in Danao, Cebu without the inclusion of its highest peak – Mount Manghilao. Famous for its large wooden cross, this mountain is a pilgrimage site and is stepped in history and mystery. To me, Mount Manghilao is arguably the most mystical and historically interesting mountain in all of Cebu.

Of course, the mountain also boasts breathtaking views, making it one of the best things to do in Danao, Cebu.

Mount Manghilao - the best things to do in Danao, Cebu

On my first visit to Mount Manghilao, I stumbled upon a Danao city local, Angel Hermosilla Delicano, together with her family. And, I really had a blast chatting with these friendly folks.

Not only did they offer us a smorgasbord of delicious food, but they also shared some intriguing facts about the mountain. Furthermore, they gave us a tip that ultimately led us to uncovering a cave in Mount Manghilao.

3. Experience the 120-foot Skydrop at Danasan

For the ultimate thrill and a holy sh!t moment in Danao, experience the heart-pumping Skydrop in Danasan . Trust me, this escapade is mind-blowing and simply one of the most amazing things to do in Danao, Cebu.

Danasan’s Skydrop isn’t, however, for the weak of heart or those who are scared of heights. Keep in mind that you’ll be suspended over 100 feet above the ground. And, when you’re feeling cozy and ready, you can, then, pull the level that triggers the insanely exciting drop.

san fernando cebu tourist attractions

The drop is unlike anything I’ve experienced. For a second or two, you’ll feel like you’re falling into the ground at a rapid pace. It’s an adrenaline pumping ride that deserves a spot on everyone’s list of things to do in Danao, Cebu.

Things to do in Danao, Cebu

4. Camp or hike Mount Mago

Looking for chill and not-so crazy things to do in Danao, Cebu? Why not include a hiking or camping trip to Mount Mago to your list of things to do in Danao, Cebu? Famous for its laid-back, serene ambiance and scenic views, Mount Mago is the go-to spot for local adventurers who want to escape the monotony of their daily grind. Additionally, it’s a wondrous mountain that serves as a boundary to three towns in Cebu: Carmen, Tuburan and Danao.

san fernando cebu tourist attractions

Mount Mago can be also a great introduction to the mountains of North Cebu, especially since it’s a fairly easy hike. From Santican, Danao, you can easily reach the peak or campsite in less than an hour. Honestly, the habal-habal ride from Carmen to Santican, Danao is more challenging than the hike itself.

Want to see something majestic? Then, make sure to include Danasan Peak to your list of places to visit and things to do in Danao, Cebu. Heavenly and surreal, it’s a sight that will leave you speechless and in awe.
