This Is Why Elton John And Billy Joel Stopped Touring Together

Elton John and Billy Joel

Elton John and Billy Joel , two of rock's greatest piano men, spent 16 years touring together. This dynamic duo proved to be a winning combination for the fans, and these joint concerts were pretty lucrative for them. According to Touring Data, the pair brought in more than $21 million in ticket sales for only 12 concerts on their 2010 "Face to Face" tour. So what led to the end of this creative collaboration?

All the drama seems to have started in 2010 when Joel reportedly canceled a summer tour. And John's comment to the press that "Billy just wants to take a year off" only added fuel to the cancellation rumor (via Rolling Stone ). This led to speculation that the pair were on the outs. But according to Joel, there was no backstage conflict, nor was there ever any tour planned. "The truth is, there's nothing going on. I had made up my mind a long time ago that I wasn't going to work this year," he said.

Elton John started a war of words

Things between Billy Joel and Elton John may have been fine after the summer tour issues, but their relationship must have taken a hit the following year. John gave an interview to Rolling Stone magazine in 2011, in which he called out Joel for his drinking and criticized his music career. He said that Joel was "coasting" by not writing new music and complained that "we've had so many canceled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism." John believed that he was dishing out some "tough love" and rebuked Joel for the types of treatment facilities he went to, calling them "rehab light." He encouraged Joel "to do something better than what you're doing now."

While the press made a big deal of the Elton John interview and his comments about Joel, Joel himself seemed to take these comments in stride. He said that "I've worked with Elton for such a long time, and I've enjoyed our relationship too much to let something as random as these comments change my affection for him" (via Rolling Stone ). As Joel later explained to Entertainment Weekly , John "runs off at the mouth and regrets it later."

Elton John and Billy Joel still friends

Behind the scenes, Billy Joel was wrestling with some health issues that were more pressing than Elton John's off-the-cuff comments. He told the Daily Mail , "The last few gigs I did with Elton I could barely walk. ... canes on stage is not good." Joel ended up having his hips replaced to improve his mobility. But even when he got better, Joel wasn't interested in reuniting with John. After 16 years of performing together, Joel explained, "I got tired of doing the same show over and over again." So, at least according to Joel, boredom caused the breakup of this musical team. Elton, however, squarely attributed their parting of ways to Joel's personal issues, especially his battle with alcoholism. In his memoir, "Me," John wrote, "I just couldn't stand to watch a nice guy doing that to himself any longer" (via Variety ).

Apparently, there's no lingering animosity between the two musical legends. Joel told Entertainment Weekly that he and John had mended their friendship years ago. "We sat down, and I was like, 'Don't throw your friends under the bus.'" John launched his Farewell Yellow Brick Road in 2018, and Joel hasn't ruled out making a guest appearance on stage with him. He told Rolling Stone that he would sing with John "if he asked me to." Joel, who has a residency at New York's Madison Square Garden, has no intentions of following in John's footsteps to retirement.

Billy Joel And Elton John Have A Long And Tangled History, But Are They Friends Today?

Elton John and Billy Joel were rock's biggest package tour until they seemingly parted under disputed circumstances.

  • Elton John and Billy Joel were rumored to have had a falling out in 2011, with John criticizing Joel's live set and choice of rehab facilities.
  • Despite the rumors, Joel accepted John's critical remarks as tough love and noted that John tends to shoot from the hip in interviews.
  • The two piano men had a successful concert partnership called Face to Face, with eight world tours between 1994 and 2010, grossing millions of dollars.

Elton John and Billy Joel are rock's two most famous piano men of the last half-century. Elton has nine US No. 1 hits to his name. Joel has three. Combined, they've placed 113 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Between 1994 and 2010, the two stars joined forces on eight world tours dubbed Face to Face. By 2011, however, it was all over. Billy Joel and Elton John were rumored to have had a falling out, though they later patched things up.

Billy Joel And Elton John Were Said To Have Had A Falling Out

British Summer Time Festival

For a time, rumors circulated that Billy Joel and Elton John had a falling out.

In 2011, a year after reported concert cancelations between the two icons, Elton made some critical remarks about the "Allentown" singer, who struggled with alcohol and hadn't made a studio album since 1993's River of Dreams .

John criticized Joel's stagnant live set and choice of rehab facilities, which the "Tiny Dancer" singer deemed "rehab light."

Despite talk of a rift between the two legends, Joel (who's rolled with many punches in his five-decade-plus-year career) accepted John's comments as tough love . He notes that John (whose public rows with Madonna and George Michael were tabloid fodder) has a history of shooting from the hip in interviews.

Billy Joel Completely Lost It On Stage During A Miserable Tour Through The Soviet Union In The 80s

Billy Joel Doesn't Like The Sound Of His Own Voice, But What Does He Actually Think About His Best Songs?

Though the two piano men ended their Face to Face concert series after the 2010 tour, they never ruled out a future joint live appearance.

In 2014, Joel began a monthly residency at New York's Madison Square Garden. He earned $150 million during the first five years of the residency, which ends in July 2024.

In 2018, John began his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which spanned 80 countries and five years. By the time Elton wrapped the tour on July 8, 2023, it had grossed $939.1 million.

Rocket Man Vs Piano Man

Elton John in the "Sad Songs" video

Elton John (born March 25, 1947, London) and Billy Joel (born May 9, 1949, New York) both got their starts in the mid-1960s.

John (then known as Reginald Dwight) first performed as a pianist in the R&B/beat group Bluesology. Joel (at 14) played un-credited piano behind rock's first bad girls, the Shangri-Las, on their two big hits "Leader of the Pack" and "Remember (Walkin' In the Sand)."

Both emerged as piano-playing singers at the dawn of the 1970s, just as a new breed of solo acoustic singer/songwriters (James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot) challenged the prevailing standard of the electrified rock band.

Elton John had his first transatlantic hit with "Your Song," a tender love-letter ballad. His subsequent singles ("Tiny Dancer," "Levon") remain anthems of FM radio. A flood of hits followed his fifth studio album, Honky Château , starting with the 1972 singles "Rocket Man" and "Crocodile Rock" (hit first No. 1).

John ruled the charts with his 1973–75 albums Goodbye Yellow Brick Road , Caribou , and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy . His biggest hits from the period include "Daniel," "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." At one point, Elton was tired of his saturation of American radio .

In 1975, Elton starred in the movie adaptation of the Who's rock opera Tommy .

After a late-'70s commercial slump, John recovered with a run of '80s hits, including "Blue Eyes," "I'm Still Standing," "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," "Sad Songs," and "Sacrifice." In 1982, Elton paid tribute to his late friend John Lennon in the emotional ballad "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)."

One Of Elton John's Most Played Song In Concert Was A Track He Secretly Hated

Billy Joel burned through some low-profile psychedelic rock bands (The Hassles, Attila) before he launched his solo career in 1971 with Cold Spring Harbor . His next three albums contained songs that later became popular, including "New York State of Mind," "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," and his signature "Piano Man."

Joel shot to fame with his 1977 album The Stranger and the hits "Anthony's Song (Moving Out)," "Just the Way You Are," and "She's Always a Woman." His subsequent albums 52nd Street and Glass Houses sprayed radio playlists with "Big Shot," "My Life," "You May Be Right," and "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me."

After his experimental art-pop album The Nylon Curtain (best known for the working class anthem "Allentown" and the Vietnam War lament "Goodnight Saigon"), Joel hit his commercial peak with 1983's An Innocent Man , a collection of pre-Beatles-style retro pop, including doo-wop ("The Longest Time"), Motown ("Tell Her About It"), '50s boogie ("Keeping the Faith"), and the Four Seasons tribute "Uptown Girl."

Joel made three more pop-rock albums, including 1989's mega-seller Storm Front , but focused on classical music after 1993.

While proud of his legacy, Billy Joel has certain songs that he'd scrub from memory .

Elton And Billy Joel Were A Dynamic Concert Duo

Elton John and Billy Joel joined forced in 1994 with their Face to Face tour, a series of joint concerts. Each show began with three duet numbers, followed by separate sets by John and Joel and a joint encore.

They traded select numbers in their solo sets. On most nights, Elton performed "New York State of Mind" and Billy performed "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." The 1994 tour grossed $48.4 million.

Each year, an uncountable number of recording artists transform their discographies into live shows, going on tour to super-serve their biggest fans around the world. But a select few have the power to bring their fans to them, staging extravagant productions in one city as the masses travel to see a once-in-a-career performance. Here, we’re looking at the biggest residencies in Boxscore history.

Most often, these residencies occur at theaters in Las Vegas. Among the most popular international tourist destinations, Sin City has become a second home for many of the biggest acts in music.

Some ground rules: as with all Boxscore charts, this list only includes shows that were reported to Billboard Boxscore. The threshold for inclusion on this list is a minimum of 10 shows at a single venue. Some productions, especially those by MGM, will have a home base at a Vegas theater but travel to a handful of other venues, like The Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md. – only the home-venue shows will count toward residency totals.

Further, this list only includes residencies that have their own unique names and productions and setlists – no mini-residencies within a tour. That means that Harry Styles ’ 15-show runs at Madison Square Garden and the Kia Forum are excluded, as they were part of Love On Tour. Same goes for the theater stints that made up Madonna ’s Madame X Tour in 2019-20.

However, residencies that are broken up by tours do count. That means that Bruno Mars ’ Park MGM residency – interrupted by the 24K Magic World Tour – is eligible, as is Carrie Underwood ’s ongoing Reflection.
