QE2 Dubai

More than 1,400 voyages around 6 million nautical miles — Queen Elizabeth 2’s poignant history contributes to her glory and grandeur. Built in Clydebank, Scotland, QE2 has been a part of 25 world cruises between 1969 to 2008. The ship’s main attraction — the museum — looks back into her early days as an ocean liner, mapping her 39 years of service.

After her final voyage in 2008, QE2 was handed over to her new owners who transformed her into what she is today. By the end of 2016, the rigorous efforts on transforming QE2 paid off, and it was established that her historic past was a major contributing reason for her to stay afloat. This October, QE2 will have a grand reopening with 600 rooms, 13 restaurants and several night out venues.

  • Queen Elizabeth 2 once carried around 2.5 million passengers in total -– or about the equivalent of a city the size of Budapest.
  • The ship has circumnavigated the globe at least 25 times.
  • QE2 was also the only ship to have a synagogue at sea.
  • The ship included a shopping arcade of over 11 boutiques, including a branch of Harrods.
  • Approximately around 600,000 litres of beverage were consumed annually on board the QE2.

The elaborate QE2 heritage trail begins with the passengers assembling on the deck of the vessel. This tour will take you through the important features of the ship — including the Queen’s Room, The Bridge and Cabin — where you can experience an interactive playback of QE2’s history. Further on, the tour will also allow you to get a glimpse of her luxurious suites, original dining venues along with a plethora of historical artefacts dating back to her time in service. Apart from this, avail a voucher with AED 100 and relish the specially curated menu onboard one of the ship’s nine restaurant.

There is also a QE2 Exhibition near the hotel lobby – an interactive museum that showcases the QE2 during the 1960s when it was a pioneer in design, technology and lifestyle.

I did the heritage tour today, very interesting to learn more about QE2 and to visit some rooms and other areas. I am sure in the future we will see the engine room etc.. for now just the upper decks. For 150aed as part as the tour there is 100 aed voucher for food and beverage. I chose Q cafe. Simple salads and toasties/paninis and for now not expensive. I liked it. The cafe is set in the main entrance outside the ship; good design and good service. Will go again if I can. Overall good experience, super happy Dubai kept QE2, it will now become one of the favorite spots for tourism in the near future.

- Sylvie B, Tripadvisor September 2018

Drove up from Abu Dhabi to have a day in Dubai, and decided to investigate the Heritage Tour on the QE2, now docked at Port Rashid. Immediately directed to reception where we purchased our tickets, DHS 150 per person (DHS 100 redeemable on food) for the 13:00 tour. We were a little bit early but were able to wander around some of the exhibits. The tour started promptly at 13:00 with the tour guide, Peter, who was excellent. Having worked on the vessel for many years was able to provide a phenomenal amount of information on the ship, the history and life on board. The tour lasted an hour and a quarter and included a detailed review of the exhibits in the reception area onshore and then the tour of a few decks aboard. I would have liked to have been able to walk on the open deck, seen the bridge and viewed astern but these were not open. There was not quite enough time to redeem our vouchers at The Lido and we ended up at the Golden Lion for 'refreshments'.

We had the best time ..... my partners mother travelled on this beautiful ship to New York and we really felt we were treading in her footsteps. Our room was superb and the guided tour was fantastically interesting and very reasonably priced. We will definitiely revisit when more of the renovations have been completed.

A go to when traveling to Dubai, Very comfortable and a must to visit. Room can be a bit small if you take the entry price. Staff are very helpful

Amazing location and very helpful staff. Away from traffic and very peaceful night. Highly recommended

It’s my 5th time there, and it keeps on getting better. Highly recommended and the reception is always very helpful!

It was a really amazing stay at Queen Elizabeth 2 hotel. Overall it's a nice experience. Its a life time experience. We could explore the historic ship. If we get another vacation, we will revisit the hotel.

Nice hotel in a cruise ship so great for the experience, was next to some really good restaurants and cafes which was great so you can eat some great food nearby. Location wasn’t too bad but you have to taxi everywhere it’s not walking distance from any Metro or Walkway. Nice view of Port Rashid

Very unique hotel experience. Staying on a legit cruise which was popular once upon a time. Loved the hospitality. Rooms were clean and very compact for a couple. We got a sea facing spacious room on request without any additional charges instead of a city facing room which was initially booked. Only thing that could be improved is breakfast price is exorbitant for no reason. Should be revised to around 50 AED per head.

Sean C. Couples - 3/26/2024 Confirmed reviews ALL

We booked an early check in but had to pay for a whole extra night but we not offered breakfast despite having paid for it. Upon check in we were not told where breakfast would be in the mornings. Our room cards expired after one day because the early check in was not linked to our other three nights so we had to walk back to reception to have the cards activated again. The following day the battery went in the door lock and we could not get in our room again until engineering had been to fix it. We booked the heritage tour and was expecting this to be detailed but were invited to go and look for ourselves after the tour at the various pictures and read the monologue ourselves. Twice i told housekeeping the shower gel container was not pumping and it never was fixed. I really wanted this to be an exceptional stay but sadly a bit disappointed. The ship is in need of maintenance, I know the situation but simple things like the balcony handrail was badly flaking and just needed some TLC. We were hoping to dine on the ship for our final night but the restaurants were were booked for private functions as far as we could tell. The pavilion bar at the rear only serves bubbles by the bottle whereas the pub onboard serves this by the glass for the same make. There was just a lack of information from reception and the management team. As much as i love the QE2 i would think twice about staying on her again if things do not improve.

The room decoration is not well done, the materials and facility should be classic, the A/C noise is too big and too cold in some areas, the quality still to be improved.

Queen Elizabeth 2 – QE2 Dubai

Dubai has some of the most talked-about and opulent landmarks in the world. Be it the towering Burj Khalifa or the 7-star luxury Burj Al Arab, all of them are counted among the world’s most recognizable artificial creations in the world. People worldwide make a beeline to come and enjoy these landmarks and take precious memories back home after visiting such places in Dubai. The government of Dubai has been striving harder and harder to make tourism the cornerstone of its economy. New destinations are being opened every year to create one more reason to come and enjoy this virtual paradise. You will get most of the information during your Dubai city tour .

It adds to the long list of tourist attractions in the mighty ship liner, Queen Elizabeth 2 or QE2, as it is known. QE2 is currently moored at Port Rashid (Mena Rashid) Dubai. It has undergone massive internal refurbishment to cover the entire ship into one huge leisure destination. It was purchased by the investment arm of the Dubai Government, Isthitmar, and Nakheel had taken the responsibility to refurbish and manage this mighty ship as one of the centerpieces of Dubai’s already-known ultra-cool dining options.

The QE2 Dubai – History, and Facts

QE2 is an ocean liner that was built for Cunard Line. It came into operation in 1969, and Cunard Line operated it as a transatlantic liner and a cruise ship for almost 40 years until the company replaced it with RMS Queen Mary in 2008. In its 40 years of sailing, QE2 has passed many landmarks and records. It was the most visible cruise ship ever. Some interesting facts about QE2;

·         At the time of retirement, it was 924 feet long

·         It carried more than 2.5 million passengers in its 40 years of cruising

·         In 1971, it saved 500 passengers from the burning French line Antilles

·         QE2 was once disabled from sailing when jellyfish were sucked into and blocked seawater intake

·         QE2 participated in the famed Falkland war as a British troop carrier

·         At the time of retirement, it has sailed more than 5.6 million miles and 806 transatlantic crossings

·         QE2 has gone around the globe at least 25 times

·         QE2 also boasted the world’s largest cinema in the sea that could seat 531 guests at a time

· QE2’s shopping arcade has over 11 boutiques, including a branch of Harrods.

The plan is to convert this majestic beauty into a 600-room 5, stars floating hotel with restaurants, a shopping mall, and an aqua park.

QE2 Heritage Tour – Experience

The Heritage tour of QE2 means touring the ocean liner and learning about its chequered past. The visitors assemble first on the deck of QE2, where they are given a briefing. The heritage tour takes you to the ship’s essential features, including the Queen’s Room, the Bridge, and the cabin. There is also an audiovisual presentation on QE2’s history and its travails. QE2 was also known to have the only ocean liner to have its museum. This has been converted into a more interactive museum where you will find many old art, artifacts, and paintings of British Royal. There is also a silver plaque of President Nelson Mandela.

If you urge to shop for a souvenir, then Dubai Duty-Free won’t disappoint you. It has a big souvenir shop aboard QE2 on the boat deck. You can buy anything here, from chocolates to electronics, watches to the best liquors. Dubai Duty-Free shop is open from 12 noon to 10.00 PM-midnight.

What it's like to stay on board Dubai’s QE2 – Hotel Insider

The floating hotel offers a slice of maritime history with a side of sea or skyline views.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 – better known as the QE2 – was once designated the world’s most luxurious ocean liner, a celebrity magnet that navigated some 1,419 voyages.

Built in 1967, the ship loyally carried out 39 years of service traversing more than six million nautical miles. When the historic vessel retired, it was bought by Dubai developer Nakheel. Having undergone extensive refurbishment, it is now permanently moored in the city’s Port Rashid where travellers can check in for a night or two.

The welcome

On the day we check into the hotel, it’s the coronation of King Charles III and the ship is hosting several themed events for the occasion, meaning it's busy on board.

While waiting, we explore the historical displays surrounding the ship's reception. After formalities are completed, we’re led to our upper deck Captain’s Room via an external lift and an entry platform.

The neighbourhood

Moored in Bur Dubai, the QE2’s watery home puts the ship in an ever-evolving district. In some ways, this is great, as it means there’s something new to see any time you visit, but it also means construction is often visible on the approach roads as apartments are added across the way from the distinctive funnels of the area’s prominent vintage resident.

A handful of modern superyachts flank one side of the QE2, while on the other there’s a strip of restaurants and shops, plus the visible cranes of Dubai’s Maritime City – a mixed-use development and working shipyard.

Given the surrounding construction, the drive to the QE2 isn’t all pretty, but that somehow makes the tall, narrow elegance of this classic cruise liner – which is longer than the Titanic – even more impressive.

A Captain's Room on the QE2. Photo: Accor

At one point, the lowest-priced ticket from London to New York – the QE2’s primary route before transatlantic flights forced then owner Cunard Lines to pivot her as a global voyager – cost the equivalent of three months’ average wage. Thankfully, the same level of rates don’t apply for hotel stays on the ship. Despite this, our Captain’s Room lacks neither luxury, style nor modern touches in its reasonable nightly tariff.

Set off a narrow corridor, ash wood flooring yields to block-pattern beige, grey, brown and blue carpets. Low ceiling downlighters illuminate the dark wood of the room’s wardrobe – containing a safe, mini-fridge and two robes – and the bedside units. The king-size bed faces a flat-screen TV.

Subtle Art Deco vibes come via angled marble-base lamps and a fabric-padded footstool facing one of two dress mirrors. There's a small armchair and a grey two-seat sofa with a coffee table that complements the cabin’s textured teal wallpaper. A generous walk-in, two-head shower and twin circular sinks with mirrors occupy the white marble bathroom.

The raised ceiling height confirms the cabin location as does the step-down balcony – a key original feature with wooden decking and a brace of wooden loungers that’s a prime perch from where to take in the city or waterside views.

The service

Genuine enthusiasm for their surroundings appears rife among many staff we encounter, not least our affable guide on the heritage tour (Dh85 per person). It unlocks numerous fascinating facts and many ship "secrets", including a stop on the defunct bridge.

I don’t find the QE2 the easiest hotel to, ahem, navigate, but thankfully there’s usually a member of staff nearby who's happy to assist.

The QE2 attracts guests from all over the world. Photo: Accor

The QE2 underwent careful restoration to ensure it was equipped with the comforts and facilities expected from a hotel in 2023. But this was all done with care taken not to bury the nautical stardust that once made the ship a must-have experience for moneyed globetrotters.

These days, 447 rooms and suites are on the inventory, from entry-level cabins at surprisingly competitive rates up to decadent Royal Suites, which have hosted famous faces such as Joan Collins and the late Nelson Mandela. If you’re keen to find out more about the people who have travelled on the QE2, there’s a who’s who-style wall map depicting the celebrities, political figures and other notable passengers who would have enjoyed an on-deck stroll.

Hopefully, they had better navigational skills than I do, as finding my way around proves tricky. On the upside, getting lost reveals areas of the ship still frozen in time or awaiting refurbishment. I stumble across an enclave of decommissioned gaming machines and a huge room with designated cooking areas where dining parties would previously have gathered.

The ship’s museum is called the Travellers’ Cove and recalls the QE2’s origins and adventures via books, photos, uniforms and artefacts. Deep in the hull, a small indoor pool is flanked by Technogym-equipped workout zones.

Elsewhere, beside corridors lined with photographs of the late Queen Elizabeth II , a spacious theatre is the venue for everything from Motown and comedy gigs to family pantomimes.

Afternoon tea at The Queen's Grill. Photo: Accor

Once the preserve of first-class passengers, the prestigious Queen’s Grill has been beautifully updated and is the hotel’s premium dining destination. It’s also the spot to partake in an afternoon tea of savoury bites, freshly baked scones and a selection of pastries (Dh175 per person).

Less formal, but also exhibiting hard-to-replicate vintage charm, The Golden Lion – which calls itself Dubai’s oldest bar – excels at pub grub favourites, including a commendable steak and onion sandwich (Dh75)

By stark contrast, Lido restaurant has been given the least sympathetic update, although the bright modernity is tempered at night when an international buffet (starting at Dh140 per person) includes a winning butter chicken and great desserts. It’s also where breakfast (Dh99 per person) is served. In-room dining is also available.

Highs and lows

The sheer novelty of being on board this famous ship is a highlight – and an overnight stay here is different to anything else in the UAE. The only low, if you can call it that, is the ease with which we get lost, although this is hardly a chore when something intriguing appears at almost every turn.

The insider tip

Sea views are best enjoyed from a private balcony. Photo: Accor

The rule with most hotels is the higher you go, the better the view. On the QE2, it's less about how high you are and more about having a balcony as these inevitably pair best with sea views.

The verdict

Given its history, the QE2 might resonate best with British guests but the mix of travellers on board during our stay suggests the lure of this famous vessel remains multinational. An ideal choice for those looking to diversify a city break, or for UAE residents seeking a unique staycation, although perhaps not the best choice for families with young children.

The bottom line

Rooms from Dh223 ($61) per night – based on a room-only stay in summer, including taxes. Check-in is from 3pm; checkout is at noon; www.qe2.com

A Journey Through Time

QE2 History 1967

On 20 September 1967 at John Brown’s shipyard on Clydebank in Scotland, Queen Elizabeth the second named the QE2 in the company of Prince Phillip and 30,000 spectators.

“I name this ship Queen Elizabeth the Second. May God bless her and all who sail in her,” she proclaimed.

Then, with the ceremonial shattering of a bottle of Australian wine against the huge bow, the ship began her first journey into the water.

QE2 History 1969

On May 2 1969, thousands of well-wishers gathered in Southampton to watch the QE2 set sail on her maiden voyage to New York.

Four days, 16 hours and 35 minutes later, the QE2 arrived at Ambrose Light and thousands turned out to welcome the new Queen in New York on 7 May.

Mayor John Lindsay boarded the ship from a coastguard cutter outside the Verrazano Bridge along with other civic dignitaries and officially proclaimed it ‘QE2 Day’ in New York.

QE2 History 1975

On 4 January 1975, the QE2 set sail from Southampton on her first World Cruise, a journey of 38,000 miles. She visited 23 Ports in 92 days and it was the first of 25 world cruises during her career.

In March 1975, the QE2 made its first transit of Panama Canal, making it the biggest ship ever to travel through the canal. There was less than a foot to spare as the ship made its way through the canal locks.

QE2 History 1982

In May 1982, the QE2 was requisitioned for the Falklands War as a troop transport, a decision which reportedly gave the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher a sleepless night.

The ship sailed for South Georgia with 3,000 troops aboard, arriving back in Southampton on 11 June 1982.

QE2 History 1986

The QE2 engines were converted from steam to diesel in Germany, in a move that was expected to save Cunard £12 million a year in fuel and ensured the QE2 remained reliable for the remainder of her career.

The plant came with two new propulsion motors and new variable pitch propellers, while parts of the passenger accommodation was also modernised.

To allow for the work, the QE2 was out of service from November 1986 to April 1987. The Cunarder’s Sagafjord and Vistafjord were used to cover QE2’s transatlantic schedule as well as world cruises.

QE2 History 1988

Sydney was a popular port of call during the QE2 world cruises, and in 1988, she stayed there for three days. During this time, the Australian TV channel ‘X10’ hosted their daily program ‘Good Morning Australia’ aboard the ship while docked in the ever-popular, Sydney Harbor.

Thanks to the renowned photographer, Arthur Gibson this amazing picture was captured and subsequently regarded as “The Photo of the Century”.

QE2 History 1990

In July 1990, The Queen became the first reigning monarch to go on a voyage on a commercial liner with passengers.

The Los Angeles Times reported: “The Queen will attend a luncheon on board the QE2. An aerial display and fly-over by the Royal Air Force has been scheduled, and the same evening, passengers on the QE2 will attend a star-studded variety show and a laser-light and fireworks display.”

QE2 History 1996

Until this date, the QE2 was owned and operated by the Cunard Line, a British/American cruise line based at Carnival House at Southampton, but in 1996 the Cunard Line ownerships was transferred to Norwegian construction company Kvaerner.

During this year she was also treated to a further $18 million refit. Works were undertaken in Southampton’s King George V dry dock – the final time QE2 would use the facility before its closure.

The refit concentrated on completing work outstanding from the 1994 refurbishment, as well as general touch ups.

QE2 History 1998

To raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel travelled aboard the QE2 between Durban and Cape Town in March of 1998. Whilst staying in the Midships Suite on Two Deck, President Mandela met with passengers and crew alike. He unveiled a Plaque, took part in a Q&A, attended a fund-raising dinner and was interviewed by Sir David Frost in the Captain’s Cabin. In the Visitors Book, Mandela wrote: “Travelling on QE2 was an unforgettable honor and a pleasure.”

QE2 History 2002

On 29 August 2002, at approximately 21.50 hours ship’s time, the QE2 completed five million miles – a world record and a world first.

Other ‘in numbers’ facts about the QE2 include: Withstanding a 30-metre high wave breaking across her bow during a hurricane, having the largest library on the seas, with over 6,000 titles on board and her Passengers consuming almost 20 tons of lobster and 1 ton of caviar each year.

QE2 History 2007

After nearly four decades as the world’s most celebrated ocean-going liner, it was announced that the QE2 was to become a floating hotel off the coast of Dubai.

She was bought by Istithmar, the Dubai Government’s investment arm, in a £50.5 million deal that demonstrated the Gulf emirate’s continued commitment to investment in its tourist industry.

QE2 History 2008

The QE2 began her farewell voyage around the UK. So great was the demand from customers wanting to experience the iconic ship, that her last sailing, from Southampton to Dubai on 11 November sold out in just 36 minutes.

Managing director of cruise agency Sovereign Cruise Club, Stefan Shillito said: “It’s like the Concorde effect. That was a travel icon and the QE2 is the same ilk and people want to experience it.”

More than 60 naval vessels and private boats met the 70,000 ton ship in the Persian Gulf as she arrived in her new home.

QE2 History 2018

Following an extensive refurbishment, the iconic QE2 once again opened her doors to welcome guests on board as a luxury destination.

Now a one-of-a-kind floating hotel, her guests have the opportunity to share in her 50 years of history and heritage with guided tours to the Captain’s Bridge, Boat Deck and the Traveler’s Cove Museum, whilst simultaneously enjoying the grandeur of years gone by.
