Rig Roundup: 7 Best RVs for Going Off the Grid

It's worth researching a variety of trailers before choosing your next rig. Here are some of the best off-grid travel trailers on the market right now.

By Roadtrippers

Thanks to their mobility and self-contained nature, RVs are ideal for creating unforgettable adventures, even far from traditional campgrounds. Luckily there are many lightweight travel trailers specifically designed for off-grid RV excursions. And good news for your wallet—many of them can be towed with an SUV, so no truck purchase is required to tow your new trailer.

Important Features to Look for in Off-Grid RVs

If you want to leave the campground in your rearview mirror and head off the grid, it’s important to purchase an RV that’s designed for rugged terrain and boondocking conditions. Here are some features that will keep you safe and comfortable even while camping far from shore power and bathhouses.

12-Volt and Propane Appliances

When you can’t hook up to shore power, you’ll want your refrigerator, cooktop, oven, and TV to work on 12-volt batteries or propane gas. Avoid residential appliances as they will require a more robust energy draw.

Solar Prewiring or Manufacturer Solar Packages

If there is even a small possibility that you will add an aftermarket solar package, make sure you look for an RV that is prewired for solar. Better yet, find one that is prewired for an inverter as well, which will allow you to use 110-volt power even while boondocking. Many of the RV models featured in this roundup offer roof-mounted solar kits as optional upgrades. We highly recommend choosing the manufacturer packages when available.

Large Fresh Water Tanks

The size of your fresh water tank is an important consideration when camping off the grid. These tanks vary greatly in size from trailer to trailer, so make note of this feature when shopping. You’ll see that within this article’s featured RVs, the fresh water tanks are anywhere from eight gallons to 55 gallons, which is a large variance within the same class of travel trailer.

Large Gray Water and Black Water Tanks

The bigger your gray and black water tanks are, the longer you can use your sink, shower, and toilet without needing to dump them. Note that some travel trailers within this category won’t have any gray or black water tanks, some have combo tanks, and others have separate tanks that are up to 30 gallons each. Pick a model that suits your needs.

Robust Frames and Raised Axles

If you want to take your travel trailer down unpaved roads and over rugged terrain, make sure you look for solid framing and raised axles that provide plenty of ground clearance. Many trailers in this class also offer all-terrain tires as either standard or an optional upgrade.

A Note on Rig Specs

It’s important to pay close attention to specs when shopping for a travel trailer. Use the VIN (vehicle identification number) to find the towing capacity and payload capacity for your specific tow vehicle.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)

The maximum loaded weight of your trailer as determined by the manufacturer. You should never exceed this weight rating when your RV is stocked with all of your gear, propane, and fresh water.

UVR (Unloaded Vehicle Rating)

The weight of your trailer as manufactured with no cargo, propane, or water.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

This is the difference between your UVR and your GVWR, telling you how much weight you can safely add to your trailer. Pay close attention to the cargo carrying capacity if you intend to travel with a lot of gear.

Tongue Weight

This is the amount of weight pressing down on the hitch ball that is attached to your tow vehicle. It is extremely important to make sure that the tongue weight of a travel trailer does not exceed your tow vehicle’s payload capacity.

Aaron Richardson

  • Last Updated: February 28, 2024

Finding the best travel trailers for boondocking can turn a simple getaway into an extraordinary adventure into the wild.

With my years of experience camping off-grid, I’ve had the privilege of testing and thoroughly enjoying a variety of RVs designed for the unique demands of dry camping.

From self-contained units that offer the freedom to camp anywhere to trailers specifically engineered for rugged terrain, the right choice can significantly enhance your outdoor experience.

Among all models I’ve tested, the Rockwood Geo Pro stands out as the best overall for its balance between comfort and off-grid capability.

It’s a game-changer for those looking to merge the serenity of remote locations with the comforts of home.

Let me guide you through the top contenders that have proven their worth in the wild, facilitating your quest for the ultimate boondocking experience.

Based on my experience, the top travel trailers are:

  • Rockwood Geo Pro: Best overall for blending comfort with off-grid capability.
  • Winnebago Hike: Great for adventurers seeking a versatile off-grid camper.
  • Airstream Basecamp: Excellent choice for stylish, comfortable dry camping.
  • Taxa Mantis Trailer: Top pick for families or larger groups needing space in a boondock trailer.
  • Timberleaf Teardrop Camper: Ideal for those prioritizing a lightweight and easy-to-tow camper.
  • Conqueror Overland Adventure Trailer: Superb for extreme off-road conditions and long-term boondocking.

Can you Boondock in a Travel Trailer?

Before we get to the goods, we should probably address one of the most important questions of this article: Can you boondock in a travel trailer?

It is actually a fantastic question, as many full-timers and avid boondockers love larger rigs like Class As and fifth wheels; simply because they have so much living space and water storage.

Nevertheless, travel trailers are equally as popular because they are generally lighter and easier to tow, allowing you to explore a variety of landscapes.

So, YES. You can absolutely boondock in a travel trailer.

Of course, there will pros and cons to any setup; travel trailers are typically smaller, therefore they usually don’t hold as much water storage. With this comes less living and storage space as well.

Nevertheless, if you’re a minimalist at heart, a travel trailer may be the perfect rig to travel off-grid with.

Depending on the type and size of the travel trailer, they can be towed by all different types of tow vehicles (for example, SUVs, Jeeps, and trucks); and you’ll find a variety of travel trailers outfitted for rough terrain (i.e., high clearance, all-terrain tires, robust framing, etc).

Now that we’ve addressed the most pressing question, lets talk about size.

What Size Travel Trailer is best for Boondocking?

What Size Travel Trailer is best for Boondocking

Yes, size matters – for boondocking, that is; and there are several factors to consider when deciding which is the best travel trailer for off-grid living.

When it comes to manueaverability through tight spaces, soft sand, or washed-out roads, smaller is always better.

That being said, you don’t want to go too small. Chances are, if you want to get away from it all, you’ll need to bring enough gear and provisions to actually enjoy your time off-grid; not to mention fresh water, grey water, and black water storage.

Think of it this way: there is a constant give and take between size and stuff when it comes to boondocking.

You can zip around easily with a tiny rig, but it just won’t hold the water, gear, food, and comforts that you might like (or frankly, need).

This is why we believe that a small to medium sized travel trailer is the best for off grid-living.

Specifically, somewhere between 13 and 25 feet long. Any smaller than 13 feet, and you just won’t have the water storage to stay out for any length of time; any longer than 25 feet and you may not be able to fit in some of the amazing, secluded spots that many boondockers enjoy.

But, of course, people make it work in a variety of different rigs. Hell, I made it work in a 35’ Class A (and learned it would have been so much easier in a small travel trailer)!

Sometimes you simply don’t know what works until you get out there and live it!

Why Boondock?

If you clicked on this article, you probably already know – boondocking is amazing. Whether you’ve already experienced the rush of finding that PERFECT free campsite, or you’re obsessively dreaming and watching videos on YouTube – I know you feel that itch, too.

That itch to explore land untouched by humans; to wake up to awe-inspiring views without paying a DIME. I’ve been there, and I can tell you – it’s just as incredible as you’re imagining.

But before I dive into WHY you should boondock, let me explain what boondocking means:

In short, boondocking is dry, dispersed camping. Boondockers typically camp on free, public lands without direct access to water, electricity, or sewage hookups.

It is a pack-in/pack-out situation, in which you’re in a self-contained RV, van, skoolie, or some other type of home on wheels.

As soon as I decided that I didn’t want an ordinary nine-to-five job with a mortgage to pay, off-grid living became appealing to me – specifically, boondocking.

When I discovered this way of life, I knew it was perfect for my lifestyle. You mean, I don’t HAVE to rely on the grid? I can camp in stunning locations for FREE? I can hit the road whenever I please and head to another amazing destination?

My freewheeling heart was in love with the idea, and after living and traveling in my RV for a year (and boondocking for most of it), I want to tell you why you’ll love boondocking too:

  • You’ll be able to enjoy longer trips because it costs less
  • It’s peaceful (most of the time)
  • You’ll witness rare, stunning views
  • You’ll learn just how happy you can be with less
  • You’ll become more eco-friendly by using fewer resources
  • You’ll become amazingly resourceful, and as a result gain confidence in yourself
  • You’ll meet like-minded people that also love nature and solitude

Yes, boondocking is a way to save money and experience nature, but it is so much more than that.

It’s a way to connect with your true self and others with the same passions. It’s a daily grind of both conserving and seeking out resources that keep you alive.

It’s a gratifying struggle that leaves you feeling fulfilled in the deepest sense.

Yeah, living off-grid (especially for months on end) is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

And believe it or not, it’s relatively easy to do – as long as you have the right rig.

So, what features are essential for boondocking?

I’m glad you asked.

Features Your Camper or RV Needs For Living Off-Grid

Must-have Features in an Off-grid RV

The best boondocking travel trailer is going to be slightly different for everyone. If you have an adventurous spirit and are happier with less, you may want to go with a small, minimalistic camper.

If you’re a family that loves to explore but also craves certain comforts from home, you may want a larger camper equipped with a full solar setup and huge water storage tanks.

The good news is: there is a rig out there for everyone. But in general, the best off-grid travel trailers have certain features that make it easier to go off the beaten path AND live there, too.

1. Your rig should be lightweight

I’ll never forget the time my husband and I had to navigate our massive Class A motorhome over a washed-out road in an attempt to find a free place to camp – I was convinced we were going to end up on our side.

It was then that I realized a lighter, rugged camper is essential for off-grid camping.

To put it plainly, lighter travel trailers can handle rough terrain much better than heavy ones; there is less risk of tipping over or getting stuck, and they will put less strain on your tow vehicle as you maneuver rocky or mountainous landscapes.

Take it from me; if you plan on boondocking regularly, you will want a sturdy, lightweight camper. You simply never know what the “roads” will be like driving to your next spot.

2. You’ll want a lot of water storage

While some of the more minimalistic rigs hold less water, I felt this was important to talk about. Why? Because the more water you can store, the longer you can boondock!

Unfortunately, with any setup there are going to be some trade-offs; smaller lightweight travel trailers will generally have smaller tanks than larger rigs.

Nevertheless, it is important to consider how much water you can take with you during your off-grid excursions (not to mention how much black and grey water you can hold!).

Even if your rig only holds a small amount of fresh, black, and grey water, there are several ways to extend your camping stay.

Consider bringing a couple 5-gallon water jugs with you; you can always bring these to your closest gas station and ask to use the spigot.

You may also want to consider a composting toilet like the Nature’s Head, as it will help you conserve your water and eliminate the black tank altogether.

3. Solar with a high-powered inverter

It might seem difficult to bite the bullet and invest in a solar setup, but I guarantee you will be happy that you did.

There is no better feeling than having a rig that is outfitted to power itself off such an abundant and effortless resource.

Besides, a good solar setup will practically eliminate the need for a backup generator – which is a whole other expense!

Most of the travel trailers we discuss below are either equipped with solar or have the option to be equipped with solar.

Even if you decide to wait on a setup, you’ll at least want the option to change your mind in the future!

4. 12-volt and propane appliances

If you want to be free from shore power, you’ll definitely want your systems and appliances to run off either 12-volts or propane.

This includes your refrigerator, hot water heater, furnace, water pump, and anything else that requires power to function.

My favorite RVs are the ones that run appliances off of multiple different power sources.

For instance, a water heater that runs off both propane and electric; or a fridge that runs off propane, 12-volts, and shore power. These will give you several different options for power in any situation.

5. High ground clearance and all-terrain tires

This one speaks for itself; if you’re going to trek off-road, you’ll want to feel confident that your trailer won’t bottom out on washed-out roads, or get stuck altogether.

The all-terrain tires coupled with the lightness of the trailer will allow your rig to navigate rocky surfaces with ease.

In addition, the high clearance will allow you to boondock in some of the most secluded places.

These features are definitely a must for traveling off-grid, as most of the dirt roads you will encounter are not maintained!

6. Sturdy framing

Three words: metal, metal, metal. You definitely want your rig to be constructed of solid materials such as steel and aluminum; and steer clear of wood construction at all costs.

Not only can wood break or fall apart when traversing harsh terrain, but it’s also susceptible to water damage.

And as we all know, nothing puts a damper on camping like mold and rot in your home on wheels.

6 most capable boondocking Camper Trailers for Off-grid Living

Now for the best part, and the reason you clicked on this article in the first place: badass travel trailers!

We picked these rigs because they have all the features we discussed above; they’re outfitted with solar (or have the option for solar), made of solid construction, and have appliances that can run without shore power.

So, without further delay, here are 6 amazing travel trailers for off-grid living:

1. Rockwood Geo Pro

Rockwood Geo Pro

  • MSRP: $23,499
  • UVW: 3,375 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,313 lbs
  • Hitch Weight: 479 lbs
  • CCC: 1,104 lbs
  • Fresh Water Tank: 31 gallons
  • Black Tank: 30 gallons
  • Gray Tank: 30 gallons
  • Propane: 40 lbs
  • Exterior Length: 20’ 8”
  • Exterior Width: 92”

The Rockwood Geo Pro lineup is unbelievable when it comes to off-grid living. It truly seems like they thought of everything when designing this series – especially the new travel trailers.

The once optional off-road package is now standard in all models; this includes 15-inch Mud Rover radial tires along with a lift kit. They also upgraded the solar from 100-watts to 190-watts, which comes with a 1000-watt inverter.

My other favorite features include the heated holding tanks, the 12-volt fridge (instead of gas/electric), the antenna/wifi booster, and the gas/electric water heater.

( Side note: our motorhome had a gas/electric water heater and we loved having the two different options).

You will also find a variety of different floor plans – they have everything from an 11-foot travel trailer to a 20-foot toy hauler. Pretty awesome, right?

2. Winnebago Hike

Winnebago Hike

  • MSRP: $37,299
  • UVW: 3,505 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,200 lbs
  • Hitch Weight: 423 lbs
  • Black Tank: 25 gallons
  • Gray Tank: 25 gallons
  • Propane: 20 lbs
  • Exterior Length: 20’ 7.5”
  • Exterior Width: 7’9”

Like the Geo Pro, the Winnebago Hike comes in a variety of models and floor plans. It ranges from 20’ to 25’ long and sleeps between 3 and 4 people, making this a great off-grid RV for small families.

The Hike comes with off-road tires, off-set wheels, and robust fenders; allowing you to venture off the beaten path with ease. It also has an external exoskeleton that allows you to securely attach kayaks, bikes, and other adventure apparatuses.

This boondocking beast also comes with a gas/electric refrigerator, roof-mounted solar prep, and 31 gallons of freshwater capacity – all features that will make your off-grid adventure a little easier.

3. Airstream Basecamp

Airstream Basecamp

  • MSRP: $48,900
  • UVW: 3,500 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,300 lbs
  • Hitch Weight: 535 lbs
  • CCC: 800 lbs
  • Fresh Water Tank: 27 gallons
  • Black Tank: 21 gallons
  • Grey Tank: 28 gallons
  • Exterior Length: 20 ft
  • Exterior Width: 7’ 9”

You didn’t think we could do a travel trailer roundup without including an Airstream, did you? Airstream came out with its Base Camp model in 2017 and has been improving it ever since. It offers the classic aluminum body and durability that we love about Airstreams – just in a smaller package.

The 20-foot Airstream Basecamp costs $45,900 without any upgrades, but if you plan on camping away from people and pavement, I highly suggest getting the X upgrade. It will cost you an extra $3,000, but you’ll get extra window protection, robust rims and tires, an axel lift, and rock shields on the front of the body.

Not only that, but for an extra $2,400, you can completely outfit your Basecamp with solar. This upgrade includes two 90-watt solar panels, a solar charge display and controller, and two group 24 series 80-hour batteries.

Even if you choose not to go with the upgrades, you’ll still be sitting pretty without hookups. The furnace and the water heater both run off propane, while the refrigerator runs off 12-volts.

Likewise, the insulated water tanks are heated with 12-volt heating pads! These hold 27 gallons of freshwater, 28 gallons of greywater, and 21 gallons of black water.

Feeling excited yet? If I could afford it, I would be, too!

4. Taxa Mantis Trailer

Taxa Mantis Trailer

  • MSRP: $41,950
  • UVW: 2,882 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,970 lbs
  • CCC: 1,088 lbs
  • Hitch Weight: 435 lbs
  • Fresh Water Tank: 20 gallons
  • Grey Tank: 22 gallons
  • Black Tank: Optional cassette toilet
  • Exterior length: 19’
  • Exterior Width: 7’6”

Let’s switch it up a bit, shall we? The Taxa Mantis trailer is an extremely well-thought-out adventure-abode. It’s smaller than the travel trailers we’ve discussed so far, but don’t let that confuse you; this little thing is a beast. It truly has just about everything you could want in a small, durable package.

The Mantis is a light and easy-to-tow pop-up travel trailer; however, it opens up dramatically to sleep up to 7 adults (if you include the rooftop tent and hammock option).

The body is made with high-quality materials such as aluminum and EPS foam and includes gravel guards in front for extra protection.

Another upgrade includes a cassette toilet with a removable black tank. It comes along with a wet bath that is stored away so ingeniously, you won’t even know it’s there. And I have to say – having a removable black tank is EVERYTHING when it comes to boondocking.

All you have to do is take it to your closest bathroom and dump it (in other words, you won’t have to break camp and potentially lose your amazing free spot!).

The Mantis is also pre-wired for solar panels, has a 12-volt outlet for the fridge, and holds 20 gallons of fresh water and 22 gallons of greywater. Honestly, I could write an entire article in itself about all the small innovative features in this rig, but I encourage you to check it out yourself!

5. The Timberleaf Teardrop Camper

Timberleaf Teardrop Camper

  • MSRP: $23,400
  • UVW: 1,500 lbs
  • Hitch Weight: 150 lbs
  • Fresh Water Tank: 11 gallons
  • Propane: Varies
  • Exterior Length: 15 ft
  • Exterior Width: 78″

Are you looking for a well-built teardrop camper? Maybe one that can traverse nearly any terrain? If your answer is yes, the Timberleaf Teardrop just may be your perfect travel trailer. It is made of aluminum with R-7 insulated walls and a zero-VOC polyurethane wood interior.

It comes with a queen-sized bed, a functional outdoor kitchen, 2 doors, 2 windows, and a huge skylight.

Even though it is such a tiny setup, it will go anywhere a rugged 4×4 can go; dessert boondocking, mountain boondocking – you name it.

It also comes with 11 gallons of freshwater, 100-amp hour deep cell marine batteries, a power center that manages all the 110-volt power, inverter, and 12-volt power, 4 USB outlets, and two 110-volt outlets – impressive for such a minimal setup!

6. Conqueror Overland Adventure Trailer

Conqueror Overland Adventure Trailer

  • MSRP: $45,625
  • UVW: 2,755 lbs
  • CCC: 1,215 lbs
  • Fresh Water Tank: 42 gallons
  • Exterior Length: 15’ 6”
  • Exterior Width: 6’ 2”

Ok, guys. I saved this one for last because it’s my absolute favorite. The Conqueror truly lives up to its name – it will conquer any off-road adventure you decide to take it on.

These indestructible little trailers have been tested and retested through the harshest terrains of Africa for decades; and honestly, they’re probably the most rugged campers in our line-up.

First and foremost, it has an epic suspension system that can glide over the rockiest terrain with ease. It’s also built without any degradable materials such as wood or fiberglass. To put it plainly, it’s made to last and will probably outlive my children’s children.

Even though it is an extremely lightweight trailer, it has just about everything you could want for your off-grid excursion.

The UEV-440 model has 42 gallons of fresh water storage, an on-demand propane water heater, an outdoor shower and kitchen that have amazing amounts of storage space and functionality, and room for 4 adults to sleep comfortably – all within a compact 93 square feet of space!

Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself!

In Closing

All of these travel trailers have one thing in common: they’re built to take a beating. They’re made for RVers who crave adventure and want to explore the road-less-traveled.

And while these rigs have many features in common, they also provide a wide range of options for any traveler (or family of travelers!). Looking for a larger rig? You may want to check out the Rockwood Geo Pro or Winnebago Hike.

Linda Humphries

Hi. I’ve been researching the right travel trailer for boondocking for only a couple months. I have looked at every one of the 6 you mentioned here. Personally, I want a trailer that offers more and that I would feel safe in. The hybrids that have rooms that open up as tents would leave me unable to sleep. The kitchens and showers outside would mean being wet and cold in the winter months. Some are nothing more than sleeping quarters. And what happens if a slide out stops working in the out position, can you drive somewhere for repairs with it out? These are all things that I have thought of as I’ve done my research.

My research…or searching, has brough me to the MDC XT16HR. So far it is the only one that I have found that meets my needs. And it is beautiful. I will continue looking, as there is plenty of time for me. Let me know your thoughts on this travel trailer please.

Thanks for your information. Linda

Hi Linda, this off road camper/trailer looks beautiful. What a wonderful find. I just started my search for a camper to start traveling on my own and be able to go to mountainous and/or off road locations without worries of the frame being too low, safety is a big priority for me too, and have the amenities all inside is best for me.

best rugged camper trailers

With the ever-growing movement toward deeper backcountry adventures, the market for truly rugged camping trailers is stronger than ever. There are plenty of trailers that have been somewhat adapted for off-grid use. And, there are some that are designed specifically for rugged-duty in places and paths that don’t come close to resembling civilization or roads.

We’ve scoured the planet to bring you a collection of some of the toughest among rugged off-road and off-grid camping trailers. Each has its own character and design, but all feature equipment (often standard) that pushes them from the “adapted” category to a higher realm of serious terrain and severe climate management.

In addition to key ingredients such as upgraded off-road suspension systems, extra-sturdy frames, and bodies built from high-strength modern composite materials and metal (often aluminum) skeletons, these rugged trailers offer modern creature comforts. Comfortable bedding, roomy dining space, fully featured kitchens (some inside and out), and sophisticated electronic systems and climate control apparatus make them easy to live in.

Now, let’s dive right into the best off-road capable camper trailers out there.

The freshwater tank is inside the body instead of underneath, safe from heat or cold temperatures.

Rugged Camper Trailer Buying Guide Need to Know

What makes a camping trailer rugged.

If you’re wondering what to look for when searching for the rugged off-road capable camping trailer best suited for your brand of outdoor adventure, we have some recommendations.

Sturdy Construction

Much of the recreational vehicle industry builds camping and trailer bodies using a method referred to as “stick and tin.” This construction is similar to the wood framing of a home covered by aluminum. It’s fine for general use, but not the best choice for extreme terrain or weather conditions.

The better choices are those trailers with metal (usually aluminum) skeletons draped with modern composite sheeting. They can offer weight savings and better structural integrity.

Upgraded Suspension

Axle-less suspension systems like those made by Timbren are a first step up from the average trailer with beam axles beneath its coach. For the next step up, made to handle rough or dirt roads and remain smooth on the highway, independent suspension air-ride systems such as MORRryde produce are your entry ticket into the rugged trailer category.

Articulating Hitch

When browsing for a rugged camping trailer, you will often see the term “articulating hitch.” It’s a key piece of equipment. If it’s standard, great. If it’s an option, get it. An articulating hitch provides a revolving joint between the tow vehicle and the trailer that helps the trailer and its suspension system more easily navigate rough terrain.

Need-to-Know Trailer Talk

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum safe permissible weight for a trailer, including all cargo, fluids, LPG, and optional equipment.

Base, Dry, Tare, Unladen: You may see it expressed differently depending upon the manufacturer, but they mean the same thing — the total weight of a base-model trailer in standard equipment trim, with no cargo, fluids (freshwater), or LPG.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC): Sometimes referred to as Rated Cargo Load, is the maximum amount of cargo weight the trailer can safely hold. This includes everything you load (all gear food, bikes, etc.) into the trailer, full water tanks, filled propane tanks, and batteries.

Tongue or Hitch Weight: The manufacturer’s published tongue weights are established using base-model trailer weights. It should be between 10% and 15% of your trailer’s weight when fully loaded. More than 500 pounds of tongue weight can place stress on the rear suspension and adversely affect the steering and overall handling of anything less than a ¾ -ton or larger pickup truck.

A weight-distributing hitch can mitigate these problems by leveraging some weight off the hitch and back onto the axles. An easy way to accurately measure your trailer’s tongue weight is to use a drive-on public scale. See this Blue Ox guide to measuring tongue weight.

10 Tips for Buying the Best off Grid Travel Trailers

off grid travel trailer

Part three of the luxury travel trailer series.

Table of Contents

What are off-grid travel trailers, what utilities are included on the grid, what is the american grid, what does it mean to go off-grid, off-grid is all about self-sufficiency vs. self-contained, what are luxury off-grid travel trailers, off-grid vs. off-road trailers, the major systems affecting off-grid use, energy – electricity & gas, water storage, efficiency & reuse, conclusion - why being off-grid capable matters.

Off-Grid Travel Trailers are specifically designed for camping in remote locations where traditional power sources are unavailable. These travel trailers are equipped with features to ensure self-sufficiency. Off grid travel trailers come with solar panels, generators, and freshwater tanks, allowing campers to generate their own electricity and store water. Additionally, off-grid trailers are built with enhanced tires, suspension, and storage capacity, providing better durability and practicality compared to regular travel trailers.

When it comes to travel trailers, off-grid is what it’s all about. The best way to define off-grid is to first define what on-grid is.

The term grid is typically used to describe the collective set of utilities that provide resources to homes and businesses in developed countries. Nearly all of our stick-built, brick and mortar homes in the US are connected to the grid that is made up of various systems or utilities. When you receive a utility bill you are on the grid. You're dependent on, and paying a fee to, a company that provides utility services to you.

There are utilities that everyone's familiar with such as water, electricity, or gas/ propane/ natural gas. Another utility handles waste – liquid and solid. Your toilet, shower and sink water waste are connected to a city sewer system. Trash collection that is separated into refuse, recycling and green waste.

These make up the major utilities that represent the grid. As you can imagine, as our society grows we become increasingly more reliant on the grid.

Another part of the grid is the World Wide Web, or Internet. It follows the same principles as the utility grid, but we’ll save this topic for another time.

Electricity travels through a complex grid of nearly a half a million miles of power lines. Hundreds of power plants generate electricity from oil, wind, solar, hydroelectric dams, and geothermal. It is all interconnected to provide the most reliable power possible.

When we say our home is “on the grid” we're reliant on all of these enormous companies to provide power and services so that our homes can operate. We all know what happens if the grid breaks down during a severe storm. We go dark. All business, communications, healthcare, and transportation would cease.

While some homes and businesses have temporary backup systems such as generators, when the electricity goes out, generators last so long because their fuel supply is limited. We rely on electricity for “essential appliances” such as air conditioners, heaters, lights, refrigerators, water, and waste services. The second your electrical source turns off all those systems become useless.

Even sewer and trash collection would cease to operate because gas stations wouldn’t be able to refuel trucks. We’d be in a world of hurt. Even our toilets wouldn't work because water service depends on electricity to pump it into your home. We are reliant on the grid.

The concept of going off-grid means disconnecting, and giving yourself freedom, from the grid. More and more people are disconnecting from the grid thanks to the growth of solar power.

Travelling off-grid is nothing new and it’s been with us for millennia where people fended for themselves. Living off-grid was how the “West was won.” It’s simple, pioneer mom, dad and kids were America’s first “off-grid family.”  All the needs to sustain life in the west was contained in their very own covered wagon.  Mind you, the “luxuries” were a bit lacking.  Of course, there were many risks and discomforts that came along with an off-grid lifestyle, too!

When we talk about off-grid, we don't mean going camping or being a hermit in the woods and living under a pile of sticks. Maintaining our high-quality standard of living, but without reliance on that grid, is what luxury off-grid living is all about.

off grid travel trailer

When we are no longer reliant on external providers of utilities, basically life-giving resources, we increase our self-reliance. We're only reliant on ourselves and the situation we have created for ourselves. The concept of a luxury travel trailer going off-grid is a whole ‘nother bag of bananas, because now not only are we trying to cut the cord from these life-giving resources, but we're trying to do so in a way where we can pick up and move wherever we want in a very nomadic way.

The ability to live a mobile lifestyle is a beautiful virtue that only travel trailers, also known as campers, can allow. The ability to explore and get off-grid and be self-contained can be an epic, life-altering experience.

Travel trailers have been self-contained since the early 1900s, but there's a big difference between a self-sufficient and self-contained trailer. It’s basically the difference between taking all of your things you need to survive for a short period of time. Backpacking is effectively going off-grid in a “self-contained” manner. You’ve got your tiny camp stove, bottles of water, dehydrated food, and any sleeping affects that you’ll need with you – all on your back or pack animal. And you are self-contained for a week max.  Even signs at the entrance of trailheads clearly state “pack it in, pack it out”, meaning – whatever you bring in here you must take out with you.  That’s the virtue of being self contained.  Believe it or not, national parks even require you to pack out your poop when backpacking.   Not exactly luxury…

Similarly, a self-contained travel trailer will have things that allow you to get off-grid for a week, but that doesn't mean that you can go off-grid indefinitely. When your batteries run out, lights turn off.  Without regenerative power, off-grid is limited.  Now self-sufficient is a whole different animal.  Properly equipped and in the right environment, a self-sufficient travel trailer can remain off-grid for a very long time, potentially even unlimited.

The key to true off-grid is self-reliance and being self-sufficient, is in making that timeframe as long as possible. The question that needs to be answered is, “How long do you want to be off-grid?” Answering this question is the silver bullet. Travel trailers are designed to move, so you need to ask and answer, “Am I going to be moving from RV park to RV park?” where you plug into, and pay for, utilities or do you want more freedom than being limited to where “everyone else is going?”  Take it from me, RV parks are no dream.   Families are crammed into tiny spots, screaming children abound, and people-people-people, everywhere.  It’s more like Disneyland on a July weekend.

When we talk about luxury travel trailers , it’s important to define the concept of luxury as really having the best choices. It's no longer just having the most expensive things or the things that are in the most demand. True luxury these days is about the freedom to make decisions that are best for you. An off-grid living environment means you are no longer encumbered by having to travel from one space or another location with utilities, that it can resupply your self-contained situation.

Time is another important concept because living on the grid can be terribly time consuming to resupply. It takes time to find locations to restock and refill. Whether that's a literal gas tank, a propane tank, or your battery systems to recharge it takes time to resupply.

A high end travel trailer will first and foremost supply you with adequate power, both in stored battery power and continuous resupply through generous high efficiency roof-mounted solar panels along with redundant backup power supplies. It should allow you to run your AC and multiple high-power appliances at same time such as a microwave, hair dryer and residential fridge.  Let’s not stop there!  You’ll also want the ability to run your audio/video systems and provide on demand electronics charging.

A luxury travel trailer does NOT rely on a generator as a primary source of energy. Don’t get me wrong, generators certainly serve an important purpose, but they must understand they are the reliable bench players and not the first-string stars when it comes to your primary source of power. Generators should not be running fulltime and are oftentimes prohibited or greatly restricted to only 1 hr. of run time a day in some instances such as National Parks.  How limiting if that’s your primary off-grid power source!

This brings up another point about the various types of generators on the market. A quiet, integrated back-up power system with a remote start switch where you may activate the powerhouse while comfortably indoors is a luxury experience. A noisy, portable generator that you have to lift in and out of your truck and connect to your trailer every time you need a back-up power supply is not.  Simple.

There is an important distinction between off-road trailers and off-grid trailers, which means the freedom of utilities. When we think about off-road trailers, we often think about living out in the middle of nowhere on an extremely rugged dirt road which requires off-road gear and all terrain tires. When you’re out in the middle of nowhere you’re probably off-grid, but off-grid can also be located in the middle of a city.

One of the best installations of off-grid use can be to stay put in a luxury travel trailer on a piece of property that's located in town. You don't need connections to all the red tape bureaucracy, such as pulling sewer, water, or electrical permits. Off-grid gives you more flexibility. Off-grid does not necessarily mean off-road.  For example, in California, there are many counties that are allowing travel trailers as accessory dwelling units on residential properties. This is a great opportunity where without any utilities or site improvements you could quite literally take a luxury travel trailer and place it on the property and be ready to use starting day one!  No expensive permits, land use approvals, architectural review boards, or the costs associated with running utility lines to your ADU. If you really want to get off the beaten path and adventure to the great outdoors, you really need to consider purpose-built off-road camper trailers.

What do we humans need to survive? At its most basic level we need food and water, then shelter. In our modern day world, and perhaps most important beyond the “life-giving resources”, is power.  Whether it’s energy from electricity or gas to run the appliances you need for water and temperature controls.

Getting off grid is so much more than simply equipping your trailer with all terrain tires. When NASA goes deep into space looking for signs of life, they’re looking for one thing:  water because it is a major life-giving resource. Water that you can drink, bathe, or cook with. Then, what do we do with that wastewater after we use it? Is it going down the sink or toilet, or after taking a shower?

Finally, the next life-giving resource is food. I'm going to discount the concept of air as air is all around us, notwithstanding the quality of air. For the time being, planet earth has access to air.

The two primary forms of energy are electricity and gas, both provide power for cooling, heating, and outlets. The one constant with energy is it must be stored either in tanks or other electrical power systems, such as batteries.

Consequently, we’re faced with the issue of power depletion. When you use energy, you have to resupply that energy. When your gas tank runs out, you must refill it. Whether that's a battery pack or a tank of propane, you have to pull that out and remove all of that energy. The concept of resupply becomes very vital. How far can you take that energy is key.  And a key question then becomes, is there a way to pull energy out of natural resources WHILE your off grid, not having to travel to resupply.  This is the key to becoming self-sufficient, not just self-contained.

Solar panels are one way to capture energy from the sun. There are other redundant systems such as power generators, which use other fuel sources that you can carry with you to resupply energy. First and foremost, shelter is required to get off grid, then providing energy to all of the modern-day fixtures and appliances.

Whether it's drinking water (fresh water), or water for sinks or showers (greywater), or toilets (blackwater), you need water. In on or off-grid campers, water storage is measured by the size of onboard storage tanks. In an off-grid environment you’ll need a lot more storage. However, water efficiency and conservation to extend that off-grid capacity is key. More efficient water systems allow you to stay off-grid longer. A high end  travel trailer will have tanks large enough to sustain extended use. In my opinion, I don’t consider anything less than 75-100 gallons of freshwater a luxury experience. If you have appropriate fixtures that don’t waste a ton of water, a 100 gallon tank will give you about 200 mins of water to use at your discretion.  That’s about 50-60 water efficient showers!  Not bad.

How about eliminating some of these fixtures altogether? Waterless toilets are very effective. Composting toilets and incinerating toilets don't require the use of any water. Because they don't require water, they don't require holding tanks, either.

Whether you have a tiny wet bath or ultra-luxurious spa bathroom, a low-flow shower setting will use much less water and allows you to stay off-grid longer. While most of us won’t prefer the limitations of a wet bath design, there are fundamentals there are vital systems behind the scenes that make a bathroom function, no matter the size. A water heater that complements a low-flow shower also saves energy. A 9-gallon tank water heater, for example, is always on and utilizes more fuel. A better option is a tankless water heater that provides a low-flow rate only when needed and saves energy. These are the types of systems you will find in off-road camper trailers.

All of this wastewater eventually goes into storage tanks. Whether those are black water tanks or gray water tanks, you've got to do something with that water. So, you've got to pay attention to make sure that the tanks are appropriately sized for both black and gray water. Of course, if you can eliminate that black water tank in an off-grid environment, all the better, because the only thing that's being put into that black water tank is your toilet. If you can get a tankless toilet that doesn't require a black water tank, that's going to extend your off-grid use significantly.

All those things contribute to having a great off-grid environment for that increased freedom and ability to travel.

an off-grid travel trailer

With the ongoing impact of COVID our world is changing at a rapid pace. People are exiting cities and rural land is being gobbled up. There is much greater demand on developed properties with utilities than raw land.  If you have a travel trailer that doesn’t require hookups and can adventure on any surface under those all terrain tires, you have a lot of options.

Most RV parks are overflowing and over-crowded, which is the opposite of social distancing. You could find yourself in a 10 campground with a thousand people, not a great experience.  I highly encourage you to go rent a traditional RV or travel trailer from one of the RV-sharing websites now-adays.  Take a “vacation” and stay at a few RV parks for a week.  After that experience, it’s easy to understand the benefit of off-grid.  I’m a big proponent of “learn by doing,” and this type of experience is worth its weight in gold!

Heating and cooling is an often gravely overlooked aspect of the luxury travel trailer experience. Off-grid living does not usually equate to sunny and 75. Off-grid living doesn’t mean an off-grid vacation during the few magical months when the temperature is ideal. Heating and cooling during hot, humid or cold and snowy months is what you should be prepared for. I see “perfect weather” days as a bonus, not the status quo. We don’t live in an ideal world, but we can control our environment by being capable and prepared.

My hallucination is to one day take your luxury travel trailer to a plot of raw land (without utilities) and be able to run your systems without any fuel supply or connection to the grid, forever.  Complete freedom to go wherever you want and be fiercely independent, no support systems needed. That’s my dream!

Do your research. Understand what safety, enjoyment and peach of mind looks like to you. Are you going on a short- term trip or making a long-term investment? How well do travel trailers function to meet that end? These are the types of questions you need to ask when considering an off-grid RV or Travel Trailer.

An RV is one of the easiest and most adventurous ways to live. Whether it’s a 6-month excursion across the country or a three-day trip to a local state park, RVs have everything you need to blend indoor and outdoor life. They’re essentially cabins on wheels, with beds, showers, toilets, and nearly full kitchens. Still, a large majority of RV users still heavily rely on connections and hookups to provide electricity and water.

But what happens when you want to venture out of the world of full campgrounds and into the world of public land? A random field in Montana will not have a place to plug into or a direct hose line with fresh water. This off-grid lifestyle is growing in popularity—wonder why!—and with it, solar harvesting systems have grown to become impressively efficient and easy.

Solar energy is the primary add-on you need for an off-grid lifestyle, but it’s not the only thing to consider. There are several preparations you need before you leave people behind and let the beards and armpit hair grow, so The Drive editors have created a brief checklist to help you out. Time for adventure!

What Is an RV?

RV stands for recreational vehicle. An RV is a wheeled unit with living quarters used for recreational purposes like camping and traveling. Some RVs, also known as travel trailers or caravans, have integrated propulsion systems, while others require vans, trucks, or SUVs to pull them around.

What Does Off-Grid Mean?

Living off-grid means you are not using the public grid of utilities, in particular electricity. Off-grid means no direct water line, no electricity, and no waste disposal. In the RV world, this is sometimes also referred to as boondocking, free camping, or dry camping.

A fifth-wheel RV is parked amongst cacti in the desert.

What Is Required For Off-Grid RV Living?

To live life as normally as possible while off-grid adventuring, you need to find solutions for the absence of plug-and-play utility connections. In other words, your RV needs its own source of electricity, its own source of water, and its own method for handling waste.

Fresh Water StorageTank

This isn’t old America where you could just put a reed straw into a river and drink or dive into a pond and take a bath. You need to carry your clean water with you somewhere inside the RV. You’ll use it for cooking, for drinking, for the toilet, for the shower, and for anything else fresh water is needed for. RVs have water storage systems included, but extras never hurt anybody.

Waste Storage Tanks

Your RV still has a toilet, it just doesn’t have a pipe that extends from that toilet to a waste management facility. Instead, your waste goes into a storage box that is later emptied at a dump site. If you’re going off-grid, you need to have an understanding of how much waste your RV can store and how close you are to the nearest dump site.

Electricity

Unless you’re going into the wild, you’ll still need and use electricity when you’re camping. You might need it for lights, a refrigerator, heating, charging phones, or numerous other reasons. Your best two options for sourcing electricity without a plug are gasoline and/or the sun.

  • Gas Generator : Using a gas generator is an older method that is more involved than using solar power. Generators are large, heavy, loud, and require gas refills, so they’re not ideal for traveling, sustainability, or maintaining the sense of peace and quiet so many people desire from nature.
  • Solar : Depending on sun availability, solar power is likely going to be the best method for powering your off-grid RV. Solar generation uses panels to capture sunlight and convert it into energy, which is then stored in a battery pack. Depending on how many appliances you have and use, as well as what creature comforts you require for daily life, you can use portable solar units or systems integrated into the RV.

A white camper parks next to some woods.

Types of Solar Systems

There are a few different options when choosing how to utilize solar in an RV. Some are cheap and simple, others are more expensive and involved. Learn which is best for you.

Portable Aftermarket

If you don’t require a ton of energy, you might be able to get away with using a portable solar pack. These devices typically feature a few solar panels that can be folded or packed into a stowable unit.

  • Pros : Simple setup, cheap, saves space, flexible, not dedicated to RV, can follow sunlight, easier to clean, able to angle toward sun, direct plugs
  • Cons : Not enough power for appliances, extra setup work

Integrated Aftermarket

If you require the maximum amount of possible energy, you’re going to want a professionally installed solar system that integrates into your RVs electrical system. The main components will be the solar panels, the charging unit, the battery pack, and an inverter. The panels typically go on the roof of the RV, while the remaining components live inside the vehicle.

  • Pros : You can get exactly what you need, you can pick where to store the equipment, you pick the brands and suppliers
  • Cons : Expensive, more complicated, dealing with aftermarket shops

Factory Integrated

Certain manufacturers such as the Keystone RV Company, offer solar systems straight from the factory. This is a great option because everything is already set up and integrated into your RV, but it might not have the exact equipment that you wanted. As a result, it might be more expensive to go the convenient route and buy straight from the factory. These might also be more difficult to upgrade in the future, as solar power is gradually becoming more efficient and cheaper.

  • Pros : No hassling with aftermarket shops, completely integrated, tailored for your RV
  • Cons : Possibly more expensive, no control over setup, possibly difficult to alter

How Many Solar Panels Do I Need?

Basic solar units only use one solar panel, while advanced systems fill up the entire roof with panels. A rough average is 1-4 panels, which are typically rated about 100 watts each. How many solar panels you need for your adventure will depend on your battery capacity, what appliances you plan to use, how much you rely on creature comforts, and how long you’ll be going off-grid.

This RV solar calculator from GoPower asks numerous prompts to determine exactly what you need.

How Much Does an RV Solar System Cost?

Expect to pay between $500-$2,500 for all of the parts of a solar system, not including the labor of installation.

Tips For Maximizing and Preserving Energy Off-Grid

Here are a few quick tips for helping you maintain the energy your solar system created.

  • Camp in neutral climates
  • LED lighting
  • No AC or heating
  • High-efficiency appliances
  • Do things manually without electricity when possible
  • Only charge devices when not in use
  • Angle and move portable panels with sun throughout the day

FAQs About Living Off-Grid In an RV

You have the questions, The Drive has the answers.

Q: Can You Fully Live Off the Grid in an RV?

A: Absolutely! Whether you want to depends on your available cash and willingness to give up creature comforts.

Q: Is It Cheaper To RV or Stay in Hotels?

A: We aren’t your accountants, so we don’t know your financial situation, but this seems like it requires a cost-benefit analysis. Without context, a night off the grid in a rented RV will be cheaper than many hotels. However, if you’re buying an RV, it largely depends on how often you use it. Buying a $500,000 RV and using it 20 times will not be cheaper than going to a luxury hotel 50 times.

Q: What Does It Mean When an RV Is Not Self-Contained?

A:   A self-contained RV does not require any outside resources. An RV that is not self-contained requires outside resources.

But, you have to compare all the features, compatibility, and value of the money while selecting a travel trailer.

Off-Grid Trailers: Top Recommendations and Buyer’s Guide

Off-Grid Trailers

Are you looking for an off-grid trailer to help you live a more sustainable lifestyle? If so, you’re in the right place! In this article, I’ll share my top recommendations for off-grid trailers and provide a buyer’s guide to help you choose the right one for your needs.

Off-grid living is becoming increasingly popular as people seek ways to reduce their environmental impact and live a more sustainable lifestyle. An off-grid trailer can be a great option if you want to try out this type of living without making a permanent commitment. There are many different types of off-grid trailers on the market, so it’s important to do your research before making a purchase.

Table of Contents

  • Off-Grid Trailer’s Advantages and Uses

How to Choose an Off-Grid Trailer

What should be in the off-grid trailer, top off-grid trailers, further reading, off-grid trailers – advantages and uses.

Off-grid trailers have become increasingly popular in recent years as more and more people are looking for ways to live a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle. There are many advantages to living off-grid, including being able to save money on utilities, having a smaller environmental footprint, and feeling more connected to nature.

One of the biggest advantages of an off-grid trailer is that it can be used as a primary residence or as a secondary getaway home. This flexibility makes them ideal for those who want to downsize their living situation or for families who enjoy spending time camping and exploring together. Off-grid trailers can also be a great way to try out alternative living before making a permanent change.

Another advantage of off-grid trailers is that they offer complete independence from utility companies. If you’re tired of paying high monthly bills and dealing with unreliable service, then going off-grid may be the solution for you. With an off-grid trailer, you’ll generate your own power using solar panels or wind turbines, collect rainwater for drinking and washing, and use composting toilets to minimize your impact on the environment.

Moreover, you don’t even have to use an off-grid trailer just for the purpose of off-grid living. For example, they make an excellent basecamp for those who enjoy camping or hiking in remote areas, as they provide all of the amenities of home without needing to be plugged into the grid. Additionally, they can be used as temporary housing during construction projects or natural disasters.

If you’re interested in purchasing or renting an off-grid trailer, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure that you choose the best option for your needs. Here are a few tips on how to select an off-grid trailer:

1. Determine What Size Trailer You Need

This will depend on factors such as how many people will be using it and what kind of equipment and utilities you want to be in. Do some research online or visit a local RV dealer to get an idea of the different sizes and features available.

2. Consider the Weight of the Trailer

If you plan on traveling frequently, it’s important to choose a lighter model so that it’s easier to tow. On the other hand, if you don’t plan on moving around much, opting for a heavier duty model might be best since it will provide more stability.

3. Decide Which Type of Floorplan You Prefer

There are many different layouts available, so take some time to browse through them all before making a decision. Some popular options include bunkhouse style, rear living room, and front kitchen designs.

4. Determine What Kind of Appliances and Fixtures You Want in Your Trailer

Most models come with basic features like a stove, fridge, and bathroom but there are also luxury versions that include things like washers/dryers and dishwashers – just remember that these added features will increase the price tag.

5. Choose Your Budget Range and Start Shopping Around

With so many different off-grid trailers on the market, there’s sure to be one within your price range. Shop around online or at local dealerships to compare prices and find the perfect option for your needs.

As you begin shopping for an off-grid trailer, it is important to keep in mind what your needs are. Here is a list of must-haves that should be in every off-grid trailer:

1. Solar Power System

This is one of the most important things to have in your off-grid trailer. A good solar power system will allow you to run all of your electrical appliances and devices without having to worry about running out of power.

2. Fresh Water Tank

Another essential item for your off-grid trailer is a fresh water tank. This will ensure that you always have access to clean drinking water, even if there is no fresh water source nearby.

3. Grey Water Tank

In addition to a fresh water tank, you will also need a grey water tank in your off-grid trailer. This will collect all of the wastewater from your sinks and showers so that it can be properly disposed of later on.

4. Sewage Holding Tank

If your off-grid trailer does not have hook-ups for sewage, then you will need to include a sewage holding tank in your setup. This way, you can store all of your waste until you are able to dispose of it properly (usually at a dump station).

5. Propane Tanks

Propane is another essential thing to have in your off-grid trailer because it can be used for cooking, heating, and powering some appliances (like refrigerators). It’s always best to have at least two full propane tanks on hand so that you never run out unexpectedly.

1. The Expedition 2.0

Can The Tesla Cybertruck Power A Travel Trailer For Off-Grid Camping?

In theory, it should be able to, but can it provide enough juice to start up various equipment like an a/c unit and a refrigerator.

C an the Tesla Cybertruck power a travel trailer for off-grid camping? Let's put it to the test to find out if Tesla's truck can power an RV.

The Cybertruck features a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet in the truck bed. This type of outlet is rated for 50 amps, but the typical output is closer to 40 amps. Most travel trailers use a 30-amp service (NEMA TT-30R receptacle and the plug is TT-30P). Some larger RVs do utilize a NEMA 14-50. So, typically, you'd need a NEMA 14-50 to TT-30 adapter to plug your travel trailer into the Cybertruck.

The Cybertruck can send 9.6 kW of power from five traditional power outlets, two in the cabin and three accessible from the truck's bed, including the aforementioned NEMA 14-50 outlet.

Get Fully Charged

Powering an RV with an EV. Is it possible?

The Tesla Cybertruck can indeed output enough power to run most travel trailers and this video proves that.

However, the travel trailer featured in this video appears to be upgraded to 50 amps, which is required to support the second air conditioner on the camper. The options for the Forest River Salem 26DBUD (as featured in this video) include the following:

  • 50 AMP Service w/Wire & Brace for 2nd A/C

So, no adapter is needed in this case, but beware that an adapter such as this one might be needed to power your travel trailer with the Cybertruck.

One more thing we should note before we move on to the results from the video is that the various appliances and components within a travel trailer do consume a lot of juice if powered simultaneously. Here's a rundown of some typical amperage figures:

  • Coffee maker – 8.3 amps
  • Converter – 8 amps
  • Hair dryer – 9 to 12 amps
  • Microwave – 13 amps
  • Refrigerator – 2.8 amps
  • Roof A/A 13.5 amps
  • TV – 1.5 amps
  • Toaster – 8 to 10 amps
  • Electric skillet- 6 to 12 amps

It's now time for the verdict. Yes, the Cybertruck can power a travel trailer. In the case of the video test, the Cybertruck had no problem powering the two A/C units at the same time, while also providing juice for the TV, microwave, toaster and so on. And this travel trailer is power-hungry with its double A/C setup, so the Cybertruck should be able to power most travel trailers on the market today.

And when you're out there camping, the Cybertruck is your beer-opening buddy too. So go enjoy a cold one in the great outdoors with off-the-grid power from your Tesla Cybertruck.

Don’t call them ‘preppers’: Meet the people building an off-grid community in Utah’s West Desert

“it’s not a doomsday effort, it’s a lifestyle,” says riverbed ranch founder philip gleason..

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Philip Gleason, founder of Riverbed Ranch gives a tour of the off-grid property on Saturday, February. 17, 2024. Gleason likes to reference an early family experience of losing power in a winter storm when he had three young daughters as the reason to starting a self sustaining community.

About 30 miles down the old Pony Express trail in Utah’s West Desert, there’s a turn off on Riverbed Ranch Road and a small wooden, salmon-pink, sign with the initials “OSR” scratched into it.

The sky meets the horizon at this crossroads and the Onaqui wild horse herd wanders the wide-open terrain, along with the occasional OHV enthusiast.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Table Mountain rises near the turnoff to the OSR land cooperative, a remote self reliant community near the Pony Express National Historical Trail in the remote western Utah desert, Saturday, February. 17, 2024.

Drive along the turnoff and soon you’ll find a sprawling development of homes in a small valley wedged between the Keg and Simpson mountains. A fence with tumbleweed encircles the property and a sign reads: “Utah OSR, Land Cooperative, Self Reliance in Action.”

This is Riverbed Ranch, a 1,245-acre agricultural cooperative. The people here are working toward total self-reliance. They want to produce their own power through solar panels, grow their own food and build their own small community.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune Riverbed Ranch Co-op in the remote western Utah desert is building a self reliant community, untethered to any utility grids, on 1,245 acres of land.

One bright Saturday in February, Philip Gleason, a spry 74-year-old, and founder of Riverbed Ranch, greeted two prospective residents, Krista and Sam Elmore, at the cooperative’s welcome center.

“I’ve been eyeing this kind of lifestyle for a while,” Krista said.

An old Star Trek-themed pinball machine sat in one corner of the visitor’s center. A few shelves served as a makeshift post office — people on the cooperative take turns picking up the mail in Nephi.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Riverbed Ranch, a remote self reliant land cooperative of 2 acre lots in the remote Utah desert, untouched by utility grids, looks to add people of “integrity,” on a piece of land spanning 1,245 acres, pictured Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024.

Gleason, dressed in a worn leather hat, cowboy boots and a black NorthFace jacket, sat down at a long table filled with books about gardening and explained what it would take to eke out a life in the remote homestead.

“It’s not a commune, it’s not a religious statement,” Gleason said. “It’s not a doomsday effort,” he continued, “it’s a lifestyle.”

It may not be a doomsday effort, but Gleason does recommend residents store seven years’ worth of cooking fuel, just in case.

Riverbed Ranch

Safety and self-reliance

The families building homesteads on Riverbed Ranch are not tax protesters or militants. There are a lot of “Second Amendment-loving” people living there.

“These are not preppers, “Gleason said, “in fact, some of them even take offense if you call them preppers. It’s a lifestyle, it’s an agricultural land cooperatives.”

Gleason’s desire to build an off-the-grid community goes back decades, to 1975 when he was a young father in his late twenties.

Gleason and his wife and three children were living in a 29-foot travel trailer in Mountain Home, Idaho, following construction work. After returning home from a Christmas visit to Preston the temperature in Mountain Home plummeted to zero. It was late at night and they ran out of propane. Then the power in the trailer park went out. The electric blanket they’d been using to keep the children warm was useless.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Philip Gleason overlooks individual projects on 2 acre lots at Riverbed Ranch, a remote self-reliant community he founded two hours outside of Salt Lake City, Saturday, February. 17, 2024.

The family survived the night, but Gleason was rattled. He learned about growing his own food and started dreaming of a self-sufficient life.

In the home he’s building at Riverbed Ranch, passive solar (a type of building that maximizes the sun’s warmth) will ensure that even when it’s below 0 degrees outside, the temperature in his home will remain warm enough to sustain human life. He keeps propane on hand, has an electric heating and cooling system installed, and a rocket stove that efficiently burns wood.

Gleason plans to grow enough food on his own 2-acre plot of land to feed 50 people. He already has a few dozen rabbits and chickens. A small orchard is growing and the greenhouse is completed.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rabbits multiply as one of the many food sources being developed by Phillip Gleason, founder of Riverbed Ranch, a remote off-grid community of families and individuals in the desert of western Utah, pictured Saturday, February. 17, 2024.

In February, he showcased his home as one model that families could follow. But each house on the cooperative is unique — from Earthships to yurts to barndominiums — as each family’s motivations for moving to the West Desert.

Jonathan Olson, a contractor by trade, and his family moved to Riverbed Ranch about a year and a half ago. “It was a prompting from the spirit,” Olson said, “I feel like God directed us out here and we just went with it.”

People move to Riverbed Ranch because “they want a safe place to raise family and food,” Gleason said. “Because they’re concerned about the dependencies that they have in a community. They’re concerned about what’s in the water. They’re concerned about the spraying and stuff that goes on.”

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Eric Cleaver waves as he makes upgrades to his underground greenhouse on Saturday, February. 17, 2024, at Riverbed Ranch, a remote self-reliant community two hours outside of Salt Lake City in the western desert.

A cradle-to-grave community

The agricultural cooperative is subdivided into 250 lots or “shares.” People pay $35,000 for 2 acres and water rights. So far, Gleason sold 131 shares and about 120 people are now living on the cooperative full time. Many are still working full-time jobs in Delta or Nephi — more than an hour’s drive each way. Others work remotely using satellite internet provider Starlink.

To purchase a share, potential residents must create a transition plan. On their website, the cooperative offers a guidebook titled “Matrix Exit Plan: A Guide to Escaping Society’s Dependencies” for $9.99.

Several nurses and retired doctors made their home at Riverbed Ranch. That’s proved helpful since the nearest hospital is more than an hour away. A resident helped stabilize Gleason after he had a heart attack. Five children were born at Riverbed Ranch in the past year and a half.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Jonathan Olson is joined by his daughter Opel, 8, as he talks about the progress he’s made on his 2 acre property at Riverbed Ranch on Saturday, February. 17, 2024.

The cooperative is working on getting the proper permitting for a cemetery for when, eventually, the first resident dies. Gleason said they have a good relationship with the local county governments and he is stern about the need to pay taxes and remain on good terms with their neighbors.

Larry and Jenny Jones — close friends and one of the earliest couples to join the project — opened their doors to visitors on Saturday.

The Joneses built a small 400-square-foot apartment inside a barn to live in temporarily while they constructed their main house.

Jenny showed Krista the store room where she kept canned tomatoes, peaches, pickles and big sacks of Yukon Gold and Russet potatoes. She also stored bins of dried ramen noodles, boxed mac and cheese, evaporated milk and Miracle Whip.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Jenny Jones, left, gives Krista Elmore a tour of her “barndominium,” where she and her husband, Larry, have built a 600-square-foot home inside a barn at Riverbed Ranch, pictured Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024.

The couples walked out to look at the greenhouse, where rosemary and chard were still thriving in the heat.

Across the way from the Joneses, Jonathan Olson and his 8-year-old daughter Opel opened up their greenhouse to the visitors as well. In the back, they’d installed an above-ground swimming pool. Other members had built a place for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to worship — about 70% of residents are members — and some planned to open a yoga and dance studio in a couple yurts.

There are plans to create a campsite so that extended families can come and visit.

“I want a place where we can gather and have fun,” Gleason said, “and if something happens it becomes a refuge.”

Editor’s note • This story is available to Salt Lake Tribune subscribers only. Thank you for supporting local journalism.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Remi Cásares Flores works on a greenhouse featuring geothermal tubing to help circulate air once complete at Riverbed Ranch, a remote self reliant community in the western Utah desert.

OFF GRID TRAILERS: THE EXPEDITION 2.0 OVERLAND TRAILER

off grid travel trailer

Construction

The Expedition 2.0 features an all-aluminum body mounted on an engineered, powder coated, 4 inch C-channel steel frame. This construction makes for a strong, durable trailer that is not only light but also impervious to rot. With a 50 degree departure angle and 21 inches of ground clearance front to back, this trailer can truly go anywhere. As well, the additions of the award winning Timbren 3500 axle-less suspension system, dual length max coupler articulating hitch, and all terrain tires further work to give this trailer exceptional off-roading capabilities.

Though not large in appearance, the Expedition 2.0 contains ample storage for the transport of all your camping needs. The numerous storage compartments are powder coated with lockable compression latches that protect your contents from theft, dirt, and dust. An additional storage bin is located at the top of the unit to accommodate the larger, more cumbersome items such as lawn chairs or firewood

The custom roof rack that comes standard with the Expedition 2.0 is an invaluable feature of this trailer which allows you to transport a canoe, kayaks, or bikes.  It also allows for the placement of optional features such as a 23 Zero roof top tent , 23 Zero awnings , and/or the 23 Zero Shower Enclosure – all of which work to maximize the trailer’s footprint and sleeping capability.  Additionally, walk on fenders and steps designed to handle up to 400 pounds of weight have been thoughtfully placed to allow for ease of access to the unit’s roof top and rack.

The well-designed side galley kitchen that comes with this model features a drop down sink with hot and cold running water and a Dometic 2 burner stove.  We opted for the drop-down configuration on this unit to allow for maximum pantry storage capabilities located at the trailer’s rear.  The fully customizable pantry storage shelves allow for the accommodation of all of your storage needs, and illustrates the attention to detail that OGT does so well.  Further, a conveniently located Dometic 55 L fridge/freezer on a pullout lockable slide provides ample room for perishable items and comes standard with this unit.    The well thought out configuration of this kitchen makes meal prep an easy and enjoyable experience.  Everything you need is within reach.  Additionally, to further enhance your dining and after-hours experience, an optional Bluetooth stereo and speaker system can be mounted to the trailer’s stove/sink unit.

Truly unsurpassed in its market, the Expedition 2.0 has it all.  It’s strong, durable design with exacting attention to detail leaves nothing lacking or wanting in this trailer.   It delivers on every level and as such gives the owner confidence and peace of mind that this trailer will handle any obstacle with ease and comfort.
