Pitztal Wild Face Extreme Freeride

St. Leonhard im Pitztal, 01.03.2024 - 03.03.2024

Weakness is not what either spectators want to see nor the competitors want to show when racing the Pitztal Wild Face Extreme Freeride, dropping more than 1,500 meters through ungroomed terrain.

In early March 2024, 3,162-meter Mittagskogel Peak at Pitztal Glacier once again plays host to the “Pitztal Wild Face Extreme” Freeride Race. The event is open to all freeriders who dare to take the challenge of speeding down 4.6 kilometers of ungroomed backcountry terrain, dropping 1,510 meters. Now in its 15th year, the Pitztal Wild Face Extreme is a 2* Qualifier event on the Freeride World Qualifier Series.

The competition format is extraordinary in the freeride contest world. Normally riders on skis going through Alpine terrain try to collect points from the judges for their style, their fluency and their tricks. This time it’s only speed that counts. The course is inspected on Friday and at the qualification runs on Saturday, skiers compete for their chance at glory. The fastest riders are advancing to the grand Wild Face finals.

Pitztal Mountain Guides

An epic scenery, long descents and endless opportunities. That’s what you need to experience an unforgettable freeride day in the Pitztal. As local experts we guide you safely through the stunning freeride area at the Pitztal Glacier and the Rifflsee resort. Always looking for the best snow and a maximum of safety.

Freeride with a mountain guide in the Pitztal

  • We guide you to the best freeride descents at the Pitztal Glacier and the Rifflsee.
  • We make a solid route planning according to the current snow, weather and avalanche situation.
  • Off the beaten track: we show you the runs far away from the mainstream routes.
  • day or half-day tour
  • 1 - 6 persons per guide
  • meeting point to be defined
  • level of difficulty: from beginners to experts

Freeride Areas

Two freeride areas with a different character form the freeride playground in the Pitztal valley. The Pitztal Glacier Resort is famous for its high-alpine flair and the very long descents. At the Rifflsee you find wide faces and also some fun tree runs which are a good option on powder storm days.

freeride-im-pitztal

Freeriding up to an altitude of 3,440 m above sea level. The Pitztal Glacier is said to be one of the best and most challenging freeride resorts in Tirol. There are the legendary runs at the Mittagskogel, where the Pitztal Wild Face Freeride Extreme race starts. The area provides some spectacular downhills and we might need a rope to get to the really good runs. If you have freeride skis with skins, we have even more exciting skiing options.

freeride world tour pitztal

Rifflsee is the little brother of the Glacier. But it is absolutely worth to ski there. The ski-lifts reach an altitude of 2,800 m above sea level. In the Rifflsee Resort we find wide open southeast faced slopes which offer first powder and then corn snow. Also there are some steep couloirs and fun tree runs.

The mandatory equipment for off-piste activities consists of a beacon, a metal shovel and a probe. Depending on the tour (glacier tours for example) more equipment is necessary.

If you don’t have your own equipment, you can rent it at the mountain guide’s office.

If you book a tour with us, we offer a package price for the following items: beacon, shovel, probe, crampons, ice axe, climbing harness, helmet, airbag, ski poles, headlights

Pitztal Wild Face Freeride Extreme 2022

Updated 10.03.2022

For the 13th "Pitztal Wild Face Freeride Extreme" freeride race, skiers and snowboarders will make a pilgrimage to the Pitztal Glacier from 18 to 20 March 2022. This year, the public can finally welcome the riders back to the original finish area in Mandarfen with lots of music and good humour.

In the wild show from the Mittagskogel, the freeriders fight for important points for the Freeride World Tour (FWT). The Pitztal Wild Face on the Pitztal Glacier is a two-star FWT qualifier and will take place for the 13th time from 18-20 March 2022. The format of the freeride contest is very special: Those who ski here play for time, because only the fastest descent counts in the "Pitztal Wild Face" race. From the start on the Mittagskogel, riders face 1,510 metres in altitude and 4.6 kilometres of unprepared terrain to the finish area. All participants can find their own way, there are no fixed routes. The race is open to freeriders aged 18 and over who are equipped with a helmet, avalanche transceiver, back protector, probe and shovel. During the race, participants also collect points for the Freeride World Qualifier Ranking.

The event starts on Friday with the course inspection with Raphael Eiter. "The course inspection is compulsory for all participants," says the race director. There will be about five directional corridors marked out on the course that all participants have to pass, with free choice of terrain in between. The riders will start individually at half-minute intervals according to their starting numbers. Under time pressure, the riders will find their own line over 1,510 metres of altitude through 4.6 kilometres of free terrain. The starting signal will be given on Saturday, 19 March at 11.30 a.m. at the summit of the Mittagskogel at 3,173 metres. The categories are ski and snowboard as well as women and men. The award ceremony will take place after the race at the finish area in Mandarfen. This is also the perfect place for all spectators to watch the spectacle, as more than half of the race course can be seen from here. Don't forget your binoculars! During the supporting programme around the freeride race, riders and spectators enjoy themselves in a relaxed atmosphere, and the classic after-race party will take place again this year in the Hexenkessl. "We are looking forward to finally being able to celebrate the winners properly again this year," says Philipp Eiter, also race director and Hexenkessl boss. www.pitztal-wildface.com

The king discipline freetouring around the highest mountain of Tyrol, the Wildspitze 3770m. How does a freeride day work?

We start at the Mountain Sports Alpine School at 08:30. Meeting up and distribution of avalanche equipment - ABS backpack, shovel, probe, avalanche transceiver. We will choose the skiing area according to the avalanche report and head off for the slopes. Your mountain guide will of course brief your safety equipment before the first descent. You ski until your feet get tired. You can take a lunch break in one of the many beautiful mountain huts. At the end of the day, you will hopefully have enjoyed many beautiful descents in untracked powder. To get the most out of the whole day, it is particularly important that you assess your skill level correctly. Freeriding Basic - Advanced - King Lines - if you are not sure what suits you - we will be happy to inform you by email or phone!

What should I bring?

If you have your own ABS backpack, avalanche transceiver equipment (is included), skis and poles, helmet. Please check prior to your tour whether your insurance includes off-piste mountain rescue. You will also receive a packing list with your booking.

Is the lift ticket included in the price?

No, you can get a valid lift pass before the meeting, or together with your mountain guide in the morning.

Is lunch included?

No, but we will have a lunch break at one of the many huts.

Do I get a discount if I bring my own equipment?

You are of course welcome to use your own equipment. Unfortunately, we cannot grant a discount as we generally provide the necessary safety equipment free of charge.

What kind of ski should I use for a freeride tour?

Freeride skis with big rockers in the tip and a flat tail are good for more control in deep powder. We recommend a width of at least 100mm below the binding. We will be happy to advise you and you can rent the right pair of skis together with your mountain guide in the morning in one of our partner shops.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
