Best Overall: ZEGUR Suit Carry On Garment Bag

Folded dimensions: 23 x 22 x 4 inches | Weight: 2.86 pounds

What sets it apart: Available on Amazon for less than $70, the ZEGUR Suit Carry On Bag is a well-constructed garment bag at an approachable price. Offered in black and gray, this garment bag features a semirigid structure piping that allows it to secure clothing in place and prevent wrinkled garments, yet it folds in half for easy transport. The bag also offers inner pockets and an exterior zippered pocket that contains various compartments of its own, perfect for accessories like belts, socks and cuff links. Other convenient features include an adjustable, detachable shoulder strap and a trolley sleeve for securing the garment bag to other luggage.

Travelers appreciate: Reviewers consistently rave about this bag's durable design at an affordable price, noting it fits well in the overhead bin on planes.

Price: $64.75 or less

Best Duffel: Halfday The Garment Duffel – Original

Halfday The Garment Duffel – Original in cactus color against neutral background.

Folded dimensions: 12 x 22 x 12 inches | Weight: 2.3 pounds

What sets it apart: The Garment Duffel by Halfday is increasingly popular for its two-in-one design – so much so that it now comes in a variety of colors and patterns as well as two different sizes: Original and Compact.

The Original size holds suits and dresses plus a few days' worth of clothing, while the Compact bag is slightly smaller and ideal for dresses and shirts. Both bags feature an interior pocket (big enough for one pair of dress shoes), a water-resistant exterior with a pocket for small accessories, and a trolley sleeve.

Travelers appreciate: We recently tested The Garment Duffel and love the overall design and quality. When packing this bag, we highly recommend using packing cubes to maximize storage space and keep additional items organized. This will also make it easier for you to fish out any in-flight essentials (think: an e-reader and headphones) if you don't plan to bring a personal item (such as a backpack ) for those needs.

Best Rolling: Briggs and Riley Baseline 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag

Courtesy of Briggs & Riley

Folded dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9 inches | Weight: 9.92 pounds

What sets it apart: Launched in 2022, the newest version of the Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag makes several improvements to the already well-rated luggage, including a beige lining, upgraded shock-absorbing wheels and an overall stronger build. Buyers have the option to monogram the garment bag as well.

The best part about this bag, however, is that it's a rolling carry-on suitcase and a garment bag in one, with separate compartments for a couple of suits, everyday clothing and accessories. These features include the brand's signature PowerPocket for charging your phone on the go as well as an exterior pocket, which offers quick access to security essentials such as your passport wallet and features an orange lining so you see if it is open.

Travelers appreciate: Recent reviewers say this investment piece is surprisingly spacious given its size, and that it has held up well for everything from business travel to international trips.

Price: $659 or less

Best Heavy-Duty: WallyBags 60" Deluxe Travel Garment Bag

Folded dimensions: 30 x 22 x 3 | Weight: 1.9 pounds

What sets it apart: WallyBags specializes in heavy-duty garment bags, with an exclusive WallyLock clamp system that secures up to six hangers in place on all of its bags. Travelers agree the WallyBags 60" Deluxe Travel Garment Bag is a lightweight yet sturdy choice for all forms of travel, noting it's strong enough to fit a wedding dress, tuxedo and shoes for destination weddings . The water-repellent bag is available in five colors and also offers durable handles that can be fastened to each other for easy carrying or attaching to other luggage.

Travelers appreciate: Owners of this bag like that it is lockable and folds easily once a dress or suit is placed inside – though some note a shoulder strap would be a helpful addition to this thoughtfully designed bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

A garment bag is designed to prevent formalwear from getting wrinkled in transit. While you'll sometimes receive a complimentary garment bag with the purchase of a suit or gown, it'll typically be one made of thin material that can rip and fall apart very easily. That's why purchasing a quality garment bag for travel is a worthy investment, especially in the following scenarios:

  • You regularly travel for business.
  • You'd like to  pack dressy items for formal nights on a cruise , where clothing irons are prohibited.
  • You're attending or hosting a destination wedding.

Yes, most major airlines consider a garment bag to be carry-on luggage as long as it complies with carry-on size restrictions and can fit in the overhead bin.

The best garment bags can accommodate a couple of suits or several outfits. Many garment bags, such as The Garment Duffel by Halfday , feature additional storage space as well. Depending on the length of your trip, a garment bag may be the only luggage you need.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross first discovered the importance of traveling with a quality garment bag after using a clunky old one she borrowed from her mom's closet. For her sister's all-inclusive resort wedding in Jamaica, she upgraded to a carry-on garment duffel bag to ensure her matron of honor dress remained wrinkle-free (and wow, what a difference). Along with these firsthand experiences, she consulted consumer ratings and reviews for dozens of garment bags to choose the best of the best for travel.

The Best Garment Bags for Travel, Tested and Reviewed

By Meaghan Kenny

Some trips, like business travel or destination weddings , require a more thoughtful packing strategy—and this is where the best garment bags come into play. You can't just toss an evening gown, bridesmaid dress , or suit in your carry-on and expect it to remain wrinkle-free. Plus you don't always have the space to pack a portable steamer —or the time to steam!—and not all hotels have an iron when you need one. Wrinkles aside, when packing speciality clothing items, you also want to limit the possibility of any liquids spilling in your suitcase and onto your clothes. A protective, high-quality garment bag you can trust to keep dresses and suits as stain- and crease-free as possible is a must-have for travelers headed to formal events.

There are plenty of options on the market, so to help narrow down a list of only the top-recommended garment bags, we asked our editors and frequent travelers for their personal picks. Whether you're headed to your best friend's beach wedding or prepping for your own honeymoon , these are the tried-and-true garment bags that will keep your favorite pieces of clothing wrinkle-free and in tip-top shape.

Samsonite Just Right garment carrier

Most functional bag

This is my personal favorite garment bag for vacations. When zipped and folded up like a briefcase, it looks pretty slim and feels lightweight. But don't be fooled—this thing is supremely functional. I can fit three formal dresses inside (a few more if they're lightweight summer dresses ) and all of my accessories for the trip. What I love most about this nylon bag from Samsonite is how many thoughtful pockets it has. Inside, you'll find a few small zippered pockets for jewelry and hair accessories, two spacious shoe compartments for a pair of sandals or heels , and a hook to keep clothing items secure. The outside looks so sleek and features a zippered exterior pocket, top handle, and a long, adjustable shoulder strap so it can be easily carried. I love how it keeps everything for formal occasions organized and all in one place. This would be an ideal option to put your formalwear in for a cruise, too.

Dimensions : 16" x 2.3" x 22"  Weight: 3.4 lbs.

Calpak Compakt large garment bag

Best for destination weddings

Several Condé Nast Traveler editors are big fans of Calpak luggage , and the brand's large garment bag's thoughtful features illustrate why: It's made of water-resistant nylon and is collapsible thanks to a tri-fold design, making it easy to pack right in your suitcase. Take it from a former bride herself— Traveler contributor Erika Owen used Calpak's large garment bag for her destination wedding in Iceland and swears by it. She says of the bag: “The pockets were so handy and allowed me to keep all of my tiny wedding essentials (hair pins, deodorant, jewelry) safe.” When you open up the garment bag, you'll find four mesh, zippered pockets for small essentials and two roomy pockets for shoes. There's also adjustable closure straps, an exterior pocket, and a top handle that makes it easy to hang on a closet or bathroom door. This one's perfect to keep everything you need for the big day all in one place and separate from the rest of what you packed.

Dimensions : 48" x 23" Weight: 1.45 lbs.

Halfday The Garment Duffel

Best weekender bag

In theory, I love the idea of being someone who packs light, of exuding a vibe of low-maintenance ease. Plus, there's so much cool gear out there that speaks to that energy, like this hybrid garment-bag-duffel-bag by Halfday. It's a garment bag that removes the stress of folding clothes like suits and dresses, but offers the added functionality of transforming into a weekender and carrying all your other must-haves like a Dopp kit with all your skincare and, I guess, underwear. So I took the Halfday for a test drive on a weekend in the Bahamas, and I can confidently say that, though your mileage may vary, it's perfect for short trips. I was able to pack two suits, some shirts, a pair of jeans, and some, but not all, of my essentials; I still had to bring a carry-on suitcase onto the plane. (I also brought three pairs of shoes. I am not, it should be said, someone who packs light.) So if you don't need six outfit options for a two-night trip, this is a perfect fit for you on its own. As for me, give me a shout when they invent garment bags that turn into a trunk. — Matt Ortile , associate editor

Dimensions : 22" x 12" x 12" Weight: 2.3 lbs.

Monos Garment Sleeve

Best to fit in a carry-on

Another favorite of mine comes from Monos, one of our editors' go-to brands for chic and durable luggage . I turn to this slim, lightweight garment sleeve when I'm limited on packing space in my suitcase but still want to keep a special dress or two protected. It holds three pieces of clothing and can be folded down into the shape of a briefcase to fit neatly in a carry-on. (I've put it inside my Monos carry-on and still had room to put more clothes on top.) This one feels well-made and does a great job of preventing creases and wrinkles while in transit. I'd recommend this option for business travelers, wedding guests, or anyone short on space. I like the Check-In option for a little more room, but it's available in a Carry-On version , too.

Away The Garment Bag

Best to attach to your suitcase

When we asked travel experts to share their favorite garment bag, the response we heard most often was Away's The Garment Bag. Lexie Alford , the youngest recorded person to travel to every country , has definitely picked up plenty of packing tips on her travels. She likes this garment bag from Away specifically because of how it can be easily strapped to her carry-on luggage . “Checking garment bags can be a pain at the airport, especially if you have expensive pieces,” she says. “It's great for peace of mind to keep them with you during long travel days.”

Fashion writer and Traveler contributor Samantha Crompton Merinder was a bride herself last year and also recommends this one. She says it fits three full-length dresses and that the exterior pockets kept her jewelry and accessories organized during transit. “It makes getting dressed virtually stress-free because your look is in one place upon arrival,” she says. Away's sleek garment bag is made of water-resistant material and features a convenient trolley sleeve.

Modoker convertible garment bag with shoulder strap

Best Amazon find

A duffel bag and garment bag all in one, this convertible bag from Amazon can be used for all sorts of trips. When you're not using it as a classic garment bag to keep dresses and suits wrinkle-free, it doubles as a regular, tear-resistant weekender bag with a side compartment to store shoes and adjustable shoulder strap that makes it easy to carry. LNA Clothing co-founder Lauren Alexander loves this one for special occasions. “This convertible garment bag can fit so much stuff and is super affordable,” she says. “I have yet to find a name brand that makes one as good as this.” This waterproof duffel has plenty of smart features, like a trolley sleeve, detachable shoulder strap, handle buckle, and several small pockets for jewelry or other accessories.

Dimensions : 37.5" x 20.8" x 45" Weight: 2.5 lbs.

Travelpro Platinum Elite carry-on rolling garment bag

Best rolling garment bag

It looks like a small carry-on, but it's actually a garment bag on wheels. Lara Kramer , Traveler's former global associate director of audience development, used this rolling garment carry-on for her honeymoon in Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro a few summers ago. While smaller than an average carry-on, Kramer told us it holds way more than you think. “I was able to pack a few nice dresses and my husband fit an entire suit, all of which remained wrinkle-free, which was a game changer,” she says. Kramer also loves that when you purchase this bag, it comes with a plan that covers the cost of repairs or damage from airlines for up to one year, including shipping costs. “Yes, this bag glides seamlessly through airports and is incredibly durable thanks to its nylon fabric with Duraguard coating, but the lay-flat garment bag design is the real gem of this carry-on," says Kramer.

Dimensions : 14" x 22" x 9.5" Weight: 9.9 lbs.

OOO Traveling garment bag

Best lightweight bag

Made of polyester, the OOO Traveling garment bag is super lightweight at just 0.8 ounces and has a full-length center zip closure that keeps your nicer items in pristine condition. Alison Bruhn , stylist and co-founder of The Style That Binds Us , likes that the garment bag can be folded inside a suitcase or folded in three sections and slipped over the retractable handle of your luggage. We also love the under-$70 price tag of this light-as-air bag.

Dimensions : 19" x 37.5" Weight: 0.8 oz.

Tumi garment cover

Best durable cover

If you're looking for a simple, no-frills garment bag that will last for years to come, look no further than Tumi's garment cover. This one checks all the boxes—it features a top carry handle, has a sturdy zip closure, and is long enough to fit a formal gown or men’s suit. Plus, this nylon garment cover is durable enough to reuse again and again. At just over one pound, this garment cover is lightweight and folds flat for easy packing.

Dimensions: 18" x 12.5" x 1" Weight: 1.1 lbs.

Garment bags can take many forms, from shoulder-strapped to rolling to flat inserts — but regardless of the style, there's a few different reasons you might opt for a garment bag instead of a suitcase. They're ideal for keeping suits well-pressed and wrinkle-free in transit, and great for business trips where you might not need (or want) a full suitcase just for a couple days. And with all of the drama that comes with checked luggage getting lost, you might want one for special occasion dresses — like a wedding dress, a bridesmaid dress or a special uniform — so you can keep them near you instead of checking them.

If you're checking a larger bag, a garment bag that fits inside of your suitcase instead of a carry-on is an option if you already have something you'd like to bring on the plane. The Centerfold Garment Sleeve from Away is designed to fit into their Bigger Carry-On, but it would be a great addition to any suitcase. It clips inside of luggage and has tiered loops to accommodate multiple hangers . It can also be carried if you prefer to not fold it up. When you reach your destination, unzip the bottom to allow your garment to fully hang instead of staying bunched up at the base. There's only two zippered pockets for accessories or other small items. The nylon is water-resistant, but not fully waterproof.

About the size of a briefcase, this compact garment bag has a strap across the back of the bag that you can slide over your suitcase handle so there's less for you to hold as you make your way around the airport. If you do choose to carry it, there's an adjustable shoulder strap as well. There's a front organizing pocket for easy access to smaller electronics like a phone and a tablet, making it a convenient carry-on bag . Unfolded, this water-resistant bag hangs at 47 inches, so it's too short for full-length dresses, but it's a great size for jackets, short dresses and dress shirts. The panel that flips out is also full of pockets for stashing jewelry, accessories, shoes and ties.

Long or voluminous formal dresses can be a real pain to travel with because they're so big and cumbersome. Not to mention, if you're traveling to an important event with a wedding or bridesmaid dress, you do not want to keep it in checked luggage, lest you be stuck in an airport — sans dress — at the customer service counter trying to track down your suitcase. For full-length dresses, you need a long garment bag to fit the entire garment without it bunching up and wrinkling at the bottom of the bag. This 72-inch-long garment bag has a 10-inch gusset so it can expand to accommodate styles with a particularly puffy lower half (like dresses designed with layers of tulle, crinoline or a train). Available in five different colors and patterns, the water-resistant polyethylene material will protect clothing from damage. Keep in mind that it is a pretty bare-bones garment bag, so there are no extra pockets or other bells and whistles like the other bags on our list.

Calpak finds a nice balance between functionality and fashion with unique styles that are well-made with plenty of features. The Compakt Large Garment Bag can either be carried on its own or it can be placed inside luggage and unpacked upon arrival. Made of water-resistant ripstop nylon, it's 48 inches long when unfolded, so it's a great size for short dresses , and there are seven pockets that fit two pairs of shoes and other accessories. Long dresses will hang out the bottom of the bag, but once the bag is folded up it will cover the hem. The Calpak garment bag comes six fashionable colors and prints that are mostly the same across their product line, so you can coordinate your luggage and bags to match, too.

Hartmann is definitely on the expensive side, but their classic nylon tweed fabric never goes out of style, plus it's treated to be water- and stain-resistant. But what's really great is the Tweed Legend Voyager Spinner has four spinning wheels so you get the ease of a spinner suitcase with the function of a garment bag to make whizzing through the airport terminal a breeze. There are plenty of compartments to keep organized, along with two triangle-shaped pockets to utilize the space by the shoulders of the garments. Hartmann is a top performer in our tests and it even landed as "best for frequent fliers" in our best luggage brands of 2023 . While we haven't tested this specific garment bag, we love their spacious interiors that are easy to pack and wheels that are smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

If you're looking for a no-frills, grab-and-go garment bag, this water-resistant Amazon Basics one is a great option. It comes with a shoulder strap for comfortable carrying and multiple pockets for shoes, undergarments and other items . There's also a front pocket for additional storage and a strap along the back for hooking on your luggage handle. In our testing, we've found the luggage from Amazon Basics to be easy to pack. While it might not be the best quality out there, you can't beat their price.

Briggs & Riley 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag

Most wheeled garment bags unfold from the top or bottom, so you end up with luggage that's wider than it is tall, which can get weird when trying to shove in an overhead bin (especially for airlines that are strangely particular about how you put bags up there). Briggs & Riley's 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag folds out from the side, so it's shaped like a regular suitcase — taller than it is wide . There are two sections, one for flat packing and one for hanging garments, with lots of little pockets in the unused space to make maximum use of the bag. While Briggs & Riley bags are pricey, they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage is broken or damaged. They have authorized repair centers to fix luggage, will repair or replace with the closest matching part and they even have DIY repair kits if you're feeling a little handy.

When you think "garment bag," the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't a compression cube, but this one from Eagle Creek is designed to compress your clothes to take up less space while keeping them looking sharp. The water-resistant polyester case comes with a folding board with printed instructions on how to fold dress shirts and slacks to fit into the bag and how to use it to reduce wrinkles . If you're using a duffle bag or a backpack, packing cubes keep all of your times organized, and with this one, now you can take your fancy threads in the duffle, too.

How we chose the best garment bags

line break

To get a sense of what makes a good garment bag, our Textiles Lab pros weighed in using their years of expertise in their field. We combed through online reviews of the most popular garment bags on the market, considering material, size, extra features, durability and ease of use to determine top picks. This list includes our experts' top-tested picks, as well as popular products with rave reviews from brands we trust.

Are garment bags worth it?

line break

Garment bags help keep your clothing pressed and wrinkle-free while traveling, so you can just take out and hang clothing once upon arrival. They're ideal for clothing you don't want to fold or roll into a suitcase, like a suit, dress shirts, dresses and skirts. Some are designed to be folded compactly and placed inside a suitcase, while others can be carried as luggage. Most bags will fold in half or thirds, but they are made with padded interior straps to keep clothes from shifting around in transit and prevent creases. Just be sure to lay garments completely flat before folding into a bag to help reduce wrinkles.

Garment bags can make a great carry-on when flying. However, it's important to note the garment bag's dimensions to ensure that it complies with the airline's listed size restrictions. If you're taking a short trip and you'll be bringing nice clothing, you can use a garment bag as a carry-on along with a small duffle as your personal item to save you the trouble of having to check a bag. Plus, anyone who's felt the pain of an airline losing a suitcase knows that when it comes to important items that can't be replaced— special clothing like a uniform, bridesmaid dress or wedding dress, for example — you might just want to go with a garment bag and carry that clothing with you at all times.

What to look for when shopping for garment bags

✔️ Size and shape: Garment bags are available in different lengths, so it's important to consider the linear dimension to ensure the garment bag is long enough to accommodate your clothing. Otherwise, if the garment bag's length is on the short side, the bottom of your garments may have to be folded or bunched at the base of the bag, which will increase the chance of wrinkling. Longer garment bags are great to hold formal dresses, jumpsuits or a full suit. For shorter clothing like tops, jackets and mini dresses, a smaller bag should work just fine.

✔️ Materials: Just like any travel bag, you want a style made of durable materials. If fabric denier is listed in the product description, the higher the denier, the thicker and stronger the fabric is. Nylon is known to be durable and water resistant while polyester is more affordable. Leather is a luxury pick that should last long term, but make sure to follow the care closely. Opt for water-resistant finishes too, especially when traveling with your favorite clothing items.

✔️ Features: To make the garment bag more comfortable to carry around, choose features like a padded shoulder strap, easy access handles and accessible front pockets to hold necessities. If you're considering taking a garment bag instead of a suitcase, make sure it has large enough pockets to hold any other items that you're packing (like shoes, accessories and undergarments).

9 Best Garment Bags For Suits For A Wrinkle-Free 2024

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

If you’re on a road trip, getting your suits from point A to B unscathed is as easy as hanging them from the oh-shit handle. Air travel, though? Not so simple. Unless you happen to stumble across a carefully curated list of the 8 best garment bags for suits, that is.

And we’re stumbling…

It’s true. You need a good garment bag to keep those pristine suits and dress shirts of yours wrinkle-free and ready to pop on at a moment’s notice. For weddings. For client meetings. For your big presentation to that group about the thing. Good news: Your travel cup runneth over with budget bags, luxury bags, rolling bags, you name it—your new garment bags await.

They hate waiting though, so you should probably hurry up and get in there.

Key Takeaways

My search for the best garment bags for suits involved giving particular attention to thoughtful details, durable construction, and the ability to keep your suits looking as good on the other side as they did when you packed them.

The Modoker Carry-On Garment Duffel stands out as the top choice, exemplifying a perfect blend of style and utility. Following closely is the Amazon Basics Tri-Fold Garment Bag , which offers great value for those on a budget.

  • What to look for
  • Final Verdict

Best Overall: Modoker Carry-On Garment Duffel

The top pick for the best garment bag for suits is undoubtedly the Modoker Carry-On Garment Duffel. Like its pricier, higher-quality Shinola counterpart, this bag is part duffel bag, part garment bag that folds nicely together into a compact carry-on that fits perfectly in an overhead bin.

Made of a water- and scratch-resistant material, the bag features an attachment for rolling luggage and includes a shoe pouch in addition to plenty of space for toiletries and a few changes of clothes. It’s all you need for a quick weekend away, regardless of the occasion.

Material: Polyester, Jacquard | Colors : 8 | Size : 11.8”H x 11”W x 22.8”L | Capacity : Up to 2 suits | Waterproof : Yes

Best Luxury: Bennett Winch S.C. Holdall

For the sophisticated traveler, the S.C. Holdall from Bennett Winch offers functionality without sacrificing timeless style; something that’s worth the investment to carry you through endless trips away frome home. This unique two-piece design transforms from a chic holdall into an efficient suit carrier, ensuring your suits remain crease-free from country hotels to corporate boardrooms.

Crafted from 24oz British dyed, waterproof cotton canvas and lightweight 18oz canvas twill, the holdall’s durability is as functional as its design, with a spacious 32-liter capacity (with the addition of a full suit in the outer compartment – both can be used sperately), it’s easy to take this where ever you need to go.

Additionally, the solid brass hardware and premium veg-tanned Italian leather epitomize easy luxury, while YKK golden brass zips add a touch of class. And the exterior pocket is a thoughtful addition for quick access to essentials like passports or wallets.

Material: Cotton Canvas, Brass, Leather | Colors : 5 | Size : 22.6″ L x 14.1″W x  17.7″H | Capacity : Single Suit, in outside wrap, more space in the interior bag | Waterproof : Yes

Best Minimalist Design: Mismo M/S Suit Carrier

Copenhagen-based Mismo manufactures impeccable luggage and accessories with a minimalist aesthetic and a devotion to old-world craftsmanship. Their bags are handsome. Their bags are made to last. And their M/S Suit Carrier damn well better be on your person during your next transatlantic flight. Or literally any other flight.

Point is, this refined Grand Herringbone garment bag is peak luxury that can hold its own next to anything from your formal attire to your travel-ready blazer . It can comfortably accommodate up to three suits and features an outside shoe pocket, solid brass hardware, and full-grain leather trim. And did I mention it’s about as close as a garment bag carry-on can get to being considered sexy? If not… it’s about as close as a garment bag carry-on can get to being considered sexy.

Material: 19% Linen, 50% Viscose, 26% PET, 5% Polyurethane | Colors : 5 | Size : 19”H x 2”W x 21”L | Capacity : Up to 3 suits | Waterproof : Water-repellent

Best Budget: Amazon Basics Tri-Fold Garment Bag

If you’re looking for a minimal-frills mens garment bag on a budget, you know Amazon Basics has you covered. Its Tri-Fold Garment Bag is a polyester workhorse designed for air travel. It holds up to three suits with plenty of room to spare for shoes, accessories, and a few everyday outfits.

Other travel-friendly features include an adjustable shoulder strap, carry handle, and pockets to accommodate items like pens and earbuds. As you might expect, this is among the least durable options on this list, making it best for the infrequent traveler who takes pride in his various suits but doesn’t find the need to break the bank on a product that’ll end up riding the closet bench more often than not.

Material: 100% Polyester | Colors : 3 | Size : 45”H x 4”W x 23”L | Capacity : Up to 3 suits | Waterproof : No

Best On Amazon: Zegur Suit Carry-On Bag

A strong contender for the best garment bags for suits overall, Zegur comes in hot with a versatile, affordable, feature-rich travel companion. In addition to its three-suit capacity, this bag is lousy with storage options. An interior shoe pocket here. An exterior laptop compartment there. You’d be hard-pressed to find a weekend-travel detail unattended to.

If you’re so inclined to argue with the almost 7,000 5-star ratings on Amazon, hey, do your thing. But, turns out, they might just be onto something. It fits nicely in an overhead bin and has thoughtfully sized pockets, a waterproof exterior, and a detachable shoulder strap—as good a collection of evidence as any.

Material: 100% Polyester | Colors : 2 | Size : 22”H x 4”W x 22”L | Capacity : Up to 3 suits | Waterproof : Yes

Best Rolling: Travelpro Platinum Elite 50-Inch Rolling Garment Bag

Which brings us to the best garment bags for men’s suits in the rolling category—the Travelpro Platinum Elite 50-Inch Rolling Garment Bag. What else can I say that the oh-so-clever title hasn’t already? Let’s see, it’s got an integrated lock, a padded roll bar that helps prevent wrinkles, and pockets of all sizes located strategically throughout the bag.

The wheels, unlike those on many other rolling bags, are made with sealed ball bearings to ensure longevity and durability. If you can think of a detail that does everything in its power to help you travel better, this thing’s got it.

Material: 100% Nylon | Colors : 1 | Size : 24”H x 10.5”W x 24”L | Capacity : Up to 3 suits | Waterproof : No

Best Functionality: Victorinox Traveler 6.0 Garment Sleeve

The Traveler 6.0 Garment Sleeve from Victorinox is the best suit bag on this list for a handful of key reasons. Chiefly among them is its exceptional attention to detail by way of several thoughtful features and accessories integrated into the bag—no surprise considering it’s from the same company that invented the Swiss Army Knife.

Hanger clamp to help prevent your suit from floundering in-flight: present and accounted for. Foam compression strap to further lock your items into place: that too. There’s also a detachable J-hook for use in your car or hotel room, plus plenty of interior and exterior pockets for storing anything from shoes to casual clothes. This is an approachable priced, one-suit bag that’s perfect for short work trips or wedding weekends.

Material: 100% Nylon | Colors : 1 | Size : 21.3”H x 2”W x 24.8”L | Capacity : Up to 1 suit | Waterproof : No

Best Travel: Away Garment Bag

Founded in 2015, Away is a relative newcomer to the travel gear scene and has since gained massive (and deserved) popularity. The brand’s luggage is designed with the modern traveler in mind. It’s water-resistant, features interior and exterior zip pockets for shoes and other personal items, and has an integrated clip for attaching it to rolling luggage.

You can stash up to two suits inside and it’s available in black and navy. This is the bag you get if you’re looking for something handsome and functional that’s going to last for years of travel.

Material: Nylon, Leather | Colors : 2 | Size : 22.5”H x 3.35”W x 20.5”L | Capacity : Up to 3 suits | Waterproof : Water-resistant

Best Convertible Bag: Shinola Convertible Traveler Garment Bag

Shinola’s Convertible Traveler Garment Bag is not only a stylish addition to any luggage collection, it’s the best garment duffel bag that can can do it all. What you’re working with is a seamless combination of a duffel bag and garment bag made of a water-resistant canvas that’s been accented throughout with Vachetta leather.

The duffel itself features strategically placed pockets and brass hardware and comes with a shoe bag. The two-suit garment bag is an open compartment with an interior slip pocket and a leather card pocket. When the occasion calls for a bag full of long-weekend gear plus a suit or two, just snap the garment bag portion onto the duffel and hit the road.

Material: 90% Canvas, 10% Vachetta Leather | Colors : 2 | Size : 14”H x 10”W x 22.7”L | Capacity : Up to 2 suits | Waterproof : Water-resistant

What To Look For In The Best Garment Bags For Suits

There are several types of garment bags, each suited to different types and lengths of trips. If you’re traveling to a black-tie affair , you’re going to have different needs from a bag than if you just need a few Oxford shirts and some nice pants . From rolling and convertible bags to traditional garment bags and carry-ons, you’ll want to pair the function of the luggage with the actual trip you’re taking.

If you’re more of a one-suit-fits-all -occasions type of guy, more power to you. Almost any garment bag will do since they all hold at least one suit. But if work takes you away frequently, for instance, and requires you to travel with suits, go for either a larger rolling bag that can accommodate multiple looks or an open-compartment garment bag with plenty of volume. Protip: Make sure there’s room to stash away a few travel-friendly non-iron dress shirts , too.

Depending on where and what time of year you travel, you’ll want to spend some time thinking about what your garment bag is made of. Rainy environments or wedding weekends in a rustic mountain environment call for water-resistant, durable materials like polyester or ballistic nylon. If luxury travel is more your speed, you can easily get away with all-leather luggage, for example.

Final Verdict

To get the most longevity out of your garment bag, choose an option that fits the frequency with which you travel and is capable of standing up to the elements that your destination dishes out. You can’t go wrong by turning to durable bags with thoughtful features like the ones found on my top pick—the Amazon Basics Tri-Fold Garment Bag .

Garment bags protect your suits and all styles of shirts from damage during travel and limit harmful exposure to pests, mildew, and the sun. As long as your garment bag is constructed of a breathable, durable material, there are few downsides to using one.

If you mainly use garment bags for suit storage, opt for a breathable fabric like cotton. If you’re looking for the best garment bag for suits for short-term travel, a water-resistant nylon or canvas bag will serve you well.

Most garment bags can fit anywhere from one to three suits. A bag’s capacity depends on factors like its purpose (carry-on, travel, etc.) and overall width.

Fabulously Fresh And Wrinkle-Free: 11 Best Garment Bags

Pressed and protected.

by Emma Treagus Published on February 5, 2024

At Luxe Digital, we independently research, review, and recommend products we love and that we think you will love, too. Learn more about how we curate the best products for you .

Garment bags…wait…are people still using those?

Yes, the modern suitcase has evolved to provide more protection, but not so much as to eradicate the need for garment bags. In fact, with the increasing rate of business trips and destination weddings, we’d argue that the need for a quality garment bag has never been greater.

The best garment bags make packing a doddle. Because who really finds fun in folding and attempting to fit a week’s worth of clothes into a suitcase—like some terrible version of Tetris?

A luggage sleeve is useful for rolling through security. A longer version is quintessential for packing those wedding guest dresses. Moth protective properties are a game-changer for storing seasonal coats. And we love a waterproof version when arriving to volatile climate changes.

It’s time to take a peek at the life-changing—or at least wardrobe-changing—world of garment bags.

In a rush? No problem! Here’s our selection of the best garment bags available right now.

Why you can trust Luxe Digital? As wanderlust enthusiasts and frequent flyers ourselves, we have, over the years, uncovered some wanderlust wisdom (journey through our sister site Luxa Terra for all our insights about luxury travel). All year long, we rigorously test and review elevated essentials, and go the extra mile to unearth getaway-ready gears that go the distance and brands that we believe will go places. For more on how we test products , see our HAPPY multi-point methodology for buying better luxuries.

For this article, our team tested dozens of garment bags in real-life international travels—some of us living a digital nomad lifestyle, others attending destination weddings in exotic locales. 11 best garment bags

Nomatic: overall best garment bag.

garment bags nomatic review - Luxe Digital

Our rating:

  • Multi carrying options
  • Carry-on friendly size
  • Separate shoe compartment
  • Pockets for smaller accessories
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Hanger doesn’t feel as durable

Our verdict:

A winning travel garment bag that works exactly as it should—a wardrobe on the road. It offers a flying start to every urban adventurer, whether we’re heading off to our best friend’s wedding or to an important business meeting abroad.

We’ve come to expect no-nonsense high performance from Nomatic. And the Nomatic Garment Bag is no exception, scoring highest in our two major garment bag categories: functionality and durability.

This folding garment bag can hold up to three suits or a combination of other clothes, including midi-length dresses. The organized pockets are perfect for storing valuable accessories such as your dress watch , ties, cufflinks, and belts . And we really appreciate the shoe compartment—a highly significant detail excluded by so many of the best garment bags.

When it comes to carrying, strolling through the airport is a breeze with the luggage sleeve. While the multi-carry padded shoulder strap and grab handles are just as convenient.

Once you arrive at your hotel, there’s a hook for hanging the bag up. And finally, the Nomatic Garment Bag is both durable and water-resistant. So, if it’s raining at your destination, you can rest assured your outfit will stay safe, snug, and dry.

Gucci: Best luxury garment bag

garment bags gucci review - Luxe Digital

  • Instantly recognizable
  • Carry-on compliant
  • External sleeve for easy accessibility
  • Multi carry options
  • Slightly heavier (3.6kg)

If you’re carrying around designer get-ups, you need this luxury garment bag to attend all the hottest events in town in a totally crease-free ensemble. After all, you know what they say. A tidy bag means a tidy mind.

We won’t beat around the bush here. This Gucci garment duffel is a splurge. And while it may not be totally necessary (for some), we know from past experience that you never regret buying a Gucci bag . Especially when you know it’s one that’ll be enjoyed by future generations.

Featuring the house’s iconic monogram, the designer garment bag exudes timeless sophistication and class, but it’s also a high utility piece. Carrying as a (more structured) duffel, the thoughtful design opens up into an elongated silhouette, big enough for a suit, plus a couple of polo shirts and linens .

We also love that the Gucci luxury garment bag has an external sleeve for other accessories, as well as a comfortable, detachable shoulder strap. If you’re hopping on a plane for a weekend wedding or short business trip, you likely won’t need additional luggage.

Calpak Packable Large Garment Bag: Best value garment bag

garment bags calpak compakt large review - Luxe Digital

  • Long enough to fit most garments
  • Organized with multiple pockets
  • Super light, collapsible silhouette
  • Adjustable straps to make bigger or smaller once folded
  • Affordable without compromising quality
  • No shoulder strap

Proving that a quality garment bag doesn’t have to break the bank, this affordable bag is water resistant, lightweight and ultra organized.

As one of our best garment bags for travel, the Calpak Garment Bag is a masterclass in organized packing. The collapsible silhouette folds into a lightweight package, which can be customized to the size of your suitcase using the adjustable straps. And we love that the compartmentalized accessory has ample interior pockets (four in total), as well as a zipped pocket on the outside to make smaller essentials easily accessible.

Once unpacked, the Calpak Garment bag has a hook to hang. And we immediately noticed that it is long enough to pack a couple of midi dresses, although your maxis may crumple a little at the bottom, depending on the length.

We’re massive fans of Calpak’s signature hues and prints—including a Barbie pink, wild leopard and classic brown, but perhaps best of all, is the under $100 price tag. In our experience, it’s not often (or ever) that you find a quality garment bag for that.

Brunello Cucinelli: Best men’s garment bag for suits

garment bags brunello cucinell review - Luxe Digital

  • Made in Italy from durable canvas
  • Timeless, sophisticated aesthetic
  • Detachable leather luggage tag
  • Long silhouette fits most garments
  • Fewer pockets

Sleek and sophisticated, we couldn’t think of a more worthy bag to carry and protect our designer suits.

Whether it’s a black tie event or an important client meeting, you need a suit bag worthy of your best suit and designer dress shirts . Our top choice? Brunello Cucinelli’s suit carry on bag. Void of fuss and frills, the sleek silhouette gets the job done and looks effortlessly sophisticated doing so—thanks to its premium leather trims and handles.

The minimalist design comes in a classical gray with the brand’s instantly-recognizable moniker in white. And while some may wish for more pockets, we usually use ours as additional luggage, making the most of the garment bag’s handy (or rather, handless) luggage sleeve.

We’ll be the first to admit that the Brunello Cucinelli garment bag isn’t one you buy for utility alone, but if you’re looking for a designer version that does your suit justice, you’ll love this one as much as we do.

Beis: Best women’s garment bag for dresses

garment bags beis review - Luxe Digital

  • Fits most dresses
  • Incredibly light for its size
  • Transparent window to see inside
  • Folds into carry on compliant size
  • Not as structured as some of our other favorites

We found it extremely difficult to find a garment bag that fits our maxi dresses without crumpling them, so we were so excited to find this one by Beis. It’s super light, organized and surprisingly affordable.

We’ve arrived at one to many weddings with crumpled wedding guest dresses or shampoo-covered slips to know that a long garment bag is imperative when traveling with your carefully chosen occasion piece. Enter: the Beis garment bag—our best travel garment bag for dresses and longer apparel.

Why we love it? Besides the bag’s extra length, it also has many slips and pockets for various smaller accessories, including a shoe compartment for your most comfortable heels .

The Beis Garment Bag is also unbelievably lightweight and carry-on compliant, with multi comfortable carrying options, including a shoulder strap, luggage sleeve and grab handles.

Beis-ically (sorry we had to), it’s all you need for a short weekend away.

Household Essentials: Best hanging garment bag for storage

garment bags household essentials review - Luxe Digital

  • Pockets for cedar wood planks to repel moths
  • Transparent window
  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Super affordable
  • Not designed for travel
  • Zips aren’t as durable as some of our other favorites

If you’re looking for a travel garment bag, this isn’t for you. However, if you’re looking for one to store your clothes at home, this extra-long, moth-repellent version is an absolute game-changer.

Not all garment bags need to be designed for travel. In fact, if you simply want a garment bag to protect your clothes at home, you’d rather not waste money on a travel-friendly version. When it comes to storing winter coats , designer suits and occasion dresses at home, the affordable brand, Household Essentials is our go-to.

The hanging garment bag is long enough for almost any item of clothing, including our wedding dress. And best of all, it has pockets at the bottom for cedar planks that naturally repel moths and insects. It’s a small detail, but one that helps us sleep better at night knowing that our most precious pieces aren’t being destroyed.

Made from natural materials, the Household Essentials garment bag is also lightweight, breathable and protects your apparel against sun exposure.

garment bags away review - Luxe Digital

  • Luggage sleeve and luggage clip
  • Multiple zipped pockets, including two shoe compartments
  • External zipped pocket for easy access
  • Padded, detachable shoulder strap
  • Structured silhouette is lightweight and water-resistant
  • Limited capacity

It’s definitely smaller than some of the other garment bags we’ve tried, but we think it’s the perfect size to accompany your cabin bag for a quick weekend getaway.

Yes, we’ve mentioned a couple of garment bags with luggage sleeves, but none work quite as well as the Away garment bag. The thoughtful design has both a luggage sleeve and luggage clip, meaning that if your cabin bag handle is too short to support the garment bag, you can hang it in front of your luggage using the luggage clip. It’s a small detail, but one that we’ve found to be incredibly useful when we’re traveling light with smaller cabin bags.

The Away garment bag is also well structured. Not only does this prevent our clothes from creasing, but it also looks professional when gliding through the airport. And we appreciate that it’s ultra light and water resistant with a padded, detachable shoulder strap and multiple pockets and compartments.

When it comes to size, the Away garment bag is just right for a short weekend getaway—be it a business trip or destination wedding—but you wouldn’t want to try to squeeze in more than three garments.

Samsara Packing Bag: Best packable garment bag for travel

garment bags samsara packing bag review - Luxe Digital

  • Ultra light and compact for packing
  • Comes in a travel essential set of 8
  • Super versatile
  • Not as structured or durable

It may not be a lifelong investment, but this eight piece travel set is all you need to organize your entire suitcase—from your shoes to dress shirts to accessories. Plus, it’s super affordable.

If you don’t want to cart around a separate garment, we recommend this one by Samsara. It’s incredibly light and fits into most suitcases with a secure hanging hook for when you reach your destination. And while it doesn’t have the most structured silhouette, if you’re traveling shorter distances, it’s unlikely that your clothes will crease over the flight.

Now for the price tag. For $25, not only do you get a garment bag, but an entire packing set of eight , including a shoe bag, toiletry bag and accessory pouches. Like you, we were skeptical of the quality. But after using the entire set for the past year, we are pleasantly surprised at how they’ve held up. We admit, they likely won’t be a lifelong purchase, but they’re still excellent value.

Shinola: Best convertible garment bag for travel

garment bags shinola review - Luxe Digital

  • Fits more than you think
  • Garment bag seamless wraps around duffel
  • Wrinkle-free
  • Removable shoe bag
  • On the slightly heavier side

If you choose this duffel garment bag set, you really won’t need anything else for weekend business trips and destination weddings. It even comes with a separate shoe bag.

Ok, so it isn’t cheap. But you really do get your money’s worth with the Shinola convertible garment bag . The 3-in-one design means you get a duffel, a garment bag or both for the ultimate carry on companion.

While the detachable garment bag performs brilliantly on its own, the real selling point is how it clips onto the duffel and morphs into one. Not only does it look cool when you’re unpacking, but the thoughtful design also prevents fold lines and makes everything incredibly easy to carry.

Of course, the shoe bag is essential for separating your dress shoes from your shirts. And we love that the duffel doubles up as a gym bag or relaxed weekender bag once off duty.

London Fog Buckingham: Best rolling garment bag with wheels

garment bags london fog buckingham review - Luxe Digital

  • Innovative design is highly functional
  • Book opening prevents creasing
  • Compression straps keep everything in place
  • Multiple mesh compartments and pockets
  • Effortless to wheel through the airport
  • Zips and seams aren’t as robust
  • Size isn’t carry on compliant for all airlines

Marrying the convenience of rolling luggage with the protection of a garment bag, London Fog’s innovative design is a game changer for frequent travelers.

While we’re big advocates for using a garment bag, we’ll admit that they aren’t always the most convenient to carry. Unless you’re wheeling this rolling garment bag through security—and then it couldn’t be easier.

The innovative design opens like a book. The one side is engineered for bigger garments such a blazer and includes a shoe compartment. While the other side has multiple mesh compartments for folded items such as dress shirts and sweaters. We also love that the bag has two hooks—one on each side—so that when you arrive at your destination, you can hang it up without unpacking and repacking.

We’ve never seen anything like the London Fog Buckingham Garment Bag , but it definitely makes sense if you frequently travel with suits and dress shirts.

Hugo Boss: Best garment duffle bag

garment bags hugo boss review - Luxe Digital

  • 2-in-1 design
  • Garment bag clips around duffel
  • Long enough for a dress or coat
  • Exterior zip pocket makes smaller essentials easily accessible
  • Detachable, padded shoulder strap and grab handles
  • Doesn’t function as well as a garment bag on its own

If you’re specifically looking for a garment duffel bag that is lightweight and carry-on compliant, you won’t be disappointed by this one by Hugo Boss.

Now that you know about this garment duffel bag, you no longer have an excuse to dump your occasion pieces in your weekender bag in the hope that they’ll arrive wrinkle-free. The Hugo Boss two-piece set features a separate garment bag, which conveniently wraps around the duffel, appearing to be one bag.

The thoughtful design also includes an exterior zipped pocket for easy accessibility, as well as a detachable, padded shoulder strap for comfortable carrying.

Of course, if you already have a carry on that you prefer traveling with, you may be better off with a regular garment bag. However, if you’re looking for the total package, we know you’ll be just as impressed by the Hugo Boss garment duffel as we are.

Buyer’s guide: what to look for when buying a garment bag

When buying a garment bag, there are a few things to consider to ensure you pick the best one for your particular needs.

Intended use: Home or away

Travel: The best garment bags can transport your prized suits and favorite dresses halfway across the world and ensure that they look as good on arrival as they did when they left the tailors. If you intend to use your garment bag for travel, consider your carrying options: wheels, grab handles, shoulder straps, and luggage sleeves. Or alternatively, opt for a lightweight silhouette that is easy to pack. Convertible duffel options are also great if you frequently travel with suits, dress shirts, or occasion dresses.

Home storage: On the other hand, if you’re looking for a garment bag to store seasonal pieces at home, we’d recommend looking for a long-hanging version that is breathable and moth-repellent with a transparent viewing window.

Type of garments

Traditional garment bags are tri-fold or bi-fold . This refers to how many times you fold them before closing. If you want something with more space, consider a convertible garment bag or a duffel garment bag. These unfold so you can store your suit or dress. You then convert them into a garment duffel bag to hold additional clothing and gear. Some even have shoe compartments at one end. An alternative is a garment suitcase. These look like small suitcases but have been designed especially to keep your clothes wrinkle-free and come with an extendable handle for easy maneuverability.

The type of garments it holds will ultimately determine the required length of your garment bag. If you’re just carrying suits and dress shirts, there’s no point in carrying around a longer one than necessary. However, if you intend to pack long dresses and coats, make sure that the length fits without creasing at the bottom. Even more so, if it’s a wedding dress or sweeping ball gown.

When considering which material to choose for your garment bag, it’s usually a balance between durability and breathability. Nylon and polyester are usually more lightweight and water resistant and, therefore, make great travel garment bags. However, for long-term storage and protection against dust, natural fabrics such as cotton or canvas are more breathable and prevent wrinkles.

Things we specifically looked for

Here’s how our team distinguished the best from the rest:

  • Portability: We looked at how easily the garment bags folded while still preventing creases, as well as features such as wheels, detachable shoulder straps, grab handles, luggage sleeves, and lightweight materials.
  • Durability: We tested for quality materials and prioritized fabrics that are also stain-resistant and water-repellent.
  • Pockets and dividers – keeping all your gear organized makes for smooth and streamlined traveling and stops things from getting creased or damaged in transit. We always appreciate a shoe compartment and extra organizational pockets.
  • Straps for securing – internal straps secure your clothes to stop them from moving around. This means less chance of wrinkles and creases.
  • Transparent screens – these allow you to see inside the pocket without opening them. Mesh is a good alternative.
  • Security tags – having your name and contact details on your garment bag offers additional peace of mind.
  • Built-in hangers – once you get to your hotel room or cabin, it’s useful to be able to hang your garment bag up immediately.

How to pack a suit without a garment suitcase

If you need to pack a suit for travel, the easiest way is with a garment bag. These are designed to keep your suit wrinkle-free and protected in transit. However, if you don’t have a garment bag, there are a few ways you can pack a suit in a suitcase or in your carry-on bag and still arrive with it crease-free and ready to wear.

  • Firstly, lay the suit jacket face down on a clean and smooth surface.
  • Next, turn the right shoulder inside out.
  • Then, fold the left shoulder back on itself and tuck it into the pouch shape made by the right shoulder.
  • Fold in half lengthways and then horizontally.
  • Place the jacket inside a dry cleaning bag. This will prevent rubbing and wrinkles.
  • Fold the suit trousers in half vertically.
  • Place the folded suit jacket in the center of the trousers and fold the trousers over the jacket.

If that sounds too complicated, a simple alternative is to turn your suit and jacket inside out before folding them. Most of the creases will then just be on the lining.

Or you can pack your suit trousers in a dry-cleaning bag at the bottom of your suitcase before packing any other pieces of clothing. Add your suit jacket in a dry-cleaning bag to the top of the pile, folding it over all the other clothes so that it’s smooth and flat.

Frequently asked questions about garment bags

The best material for a garment bag is typically a combination of durability and breathability. Nylon and polyester are popular choices due to their lightweight and water-resistant properties. However, for long-term storage and protection against dust, cotton or canvas garment bags with breathable fabric are preferable as they allow air circulation.

Yes, a garment bag is worth it for preserving the condition of clothing during travel or storage. It helps prevent wrinkles, keeps garments clean, and offers organization. Whether for business trips, special occasions, or seasonal storage, a quality garment bag can extend the lifespan and appearance of your clothing.

Yes, people still travel with garment bags , especially for occasions requiring formal or delicate clothing. Garment bags provide a convenient way to transport suits, dresses, and other outfits while minimizing wrinkles.

If you don’t have a garment bag, alternatives include using plastic or dry-cleaning bags for temporary protection. For a DIY solution, fold your clothing neatly, place them between layers of tissue paper, and pack them in a suitcase or travel cube. Rolling clothes can also minimize wrinkles during travel. However, we still recommend a garment bag, as none of these alternatives offer quite the same protection.

How to Pack a Suit for Travel Without Wrinkling It

What’s the best way to pack a suit? Whether you’re trying to pack for your airline carry-on, or simply get your suit to your wedding in pristine condition, the last thing you want to do is damage it or crease it so it can’t be worn on the other side. Today, the team of expert tailors from Oliver Wicks takes an in-depth look at how to properly pack your suit for convenience and safety, without having a wrinkled mess to sort out at the end of the trip.

The Right Bag

A little helper, pro tip: check you have everything, pro tip: know your jacket, every fold - think “roll”, not “crease”, the classic way, using a dry cleaning bag, the inside-out shoulder, for a carry-on bag, shoes, belt, and accessories, preparation.

Did you know that the number one cause of wrinkles and other issues when packing a suit, for airline travel particularly, is simply overpacking? Because of those funky weight limits, we cram as much as possible into each bag, and it is really not the way to go with something as expensive and important as your best suit. Years ago, we’d use a garment bag to carry the suit onto the plane separately, but with carry-on luggage becoming ever more limited, that’s no longer quite as practical as it once was—you probably need more than just your suit and laptop on the plane, right?

Garment bags certainly still have their uses—if you’re traveling by car, for example, one will be invaluable to help your suit arrive in one piece. And you may like to use one to hang your suit in when you arrive at your destination. But for airline travel, we advise ensuring you have a high-quality, sturdy piece of luggage instead. One with sufficient room to fit all your items in without cramping them. Make sure it has a hard shell or stiff sides to protect your suit and other items from the jostling in the cargo hold. It’s important to make sure that the suit that fits you also fits your luggage well, so you don’t damage the garment. This preparation will pay you back when you look fitted, tailored, and amazing on the other side.

If you’re able to squeeze it into your luggage allowance, a small hand garment steamer will be the single best investment you can make. If you can’t, there are some workarounds—hotels often have ironing services, or you can do a lot with some hanging time in the steam of a hot bathroom. But the ability to properly de-crease and care for your garment on the go will be invaluable to you.

Next, make sure you really do have your full suit. Do you want to hear fun stories of guests, grooms, and businessmen who’ve landed to find one cufflink, a shoe, or a belt missing? Sure, that’s fun! Do you want to be that guest, groom, or businessman? Not so much.

Dressing is a pretty instinctive act, especially if we often wear a suit, but you’d be surprised how many little details you can leave out of the mix in a rush. And if you’re not wearing a suit often, unfamiliarity will catch you. So, take some time before the rush of packing to itemize everything and make sure you have every detail—from the jacket, suit pants, and dress shirt right through to belts/bracers/cummerbunds, shoes, socks, cufflinks, pocket squares, ties or bow ties, and any accessories that you plan to wear. We suggest making a list and ticking it off as you pack for extra peace of mind.

How to Actually Pack Your Suit

A close-up shot of a suit's jacket, combined with a red tie and a red handkerchief

Now you have everything you need for suit packing, let’s get to the nitty gritty—how are you going to make this stiff, bulky, and expensive item fold up neatly and safely? Don’t worry—it can be done, we promise! Learning how to pack a suit for travel is surprisingly simple.

If, however, you’re really not able to squeeze your suit into the luggage space you have available, you can always consider wearing it to fly. After all, men and women alike used to dress up for travel! While it comes with an element of risk (a bit of turbulence and your inflight meal might end up in your lap!) , it will ensure your suit gets there. However, the rigors of travel will leave small creases, so don’t expect it to be ready to wear—luckily, your hand steamer will help with that!

By far the hardest part of a suit to fold is your jacket because it has the thickest fabric and most complicated construction. Take a moment to examine exactly how your jacket is built. Whether it has a full or half canvas, for example, will drastically impact your ability to fold it, as well as how badly affected it will be by the process.

So, get to know your suit a little and you’ll feel more confident about selecting the best packing method. Knowing what suiting fabric was used in your suit will also help you determine how it will hold up in travel.

We are going to focus on packing the jacket for now—we will touch on other parts of the suit under different headings below. Knowing how to pack a blazer for travel is the toughest part.

Huh? We’ll explain…

When folding a letter to fit inside an envelope, you’ll fold the paper on itself, and run your finger down the fold for a nice flat crease. Take note - Try to avoid doing this with garments.

Instead, try to make gentle, loose rolls. When it’s time to unpack, this will lower the chances of having any crease/fold marks left in the jacket, which would be equally as bad as wrinkles, thus defeating the purpose of trying to pack carefully in the first place. In many cases, a deep crease is actually harder to rectify than wrinkles.

This method is very efficient, creating a neat square, but it will involve the most folds as you are packing your suit jacket both horizontally and vertically, so keep that in mind.

  • Face your jacket down on a flat surface
  • Fold one shoulder into the midpoint of the back, sleeve flat along the back
  • You may need to fold the sleeve back toward the outside
  • Mirror the other side
  • Now you have the two sleeves parallel down the center back of the jacket
  • Fold the hem to just under the collar
  • Slide your hand under the folded jacket and flip it (lapels will be up, facing you)
  • Place it on top of the rest of your packed luggage, lapels up for minimum damage

In addition to your jacket, you can pack your vest this way, as there are just no sleeves to fold.

This method will protect the fabric better, and can cut down on creasing, but is a larger fold in the end. You can use a traditional suit garment bag, or a thin dry cleaning bag—both work.

  • Hang the suit inside the garment bag, with the hanger
  • Lapels should face you
  • Gather the bottom hem of the jacket and fold it up to the collar
  • Think of it like a taco shell shape with the lapels and front of the jacket inside and the back outside

This has similarities to the classic method. It is best for satin/silk-lined jackets as it will cut down on creases a lot. If you were wondering how to pack a tuxedo in a suitcase, this could be your method of choice.

  • Spread the suit jacket on a flat surface with lapels down
  • Fold one shoulder to the center midline, with the sleeve back
  • Fold it back toward the outer edge as needed
  • Now, turn the other shoulder inside-out
  • Insert the first shoulder into the “pocket” created
  • Bring the inside-out sleeve toward the center
  • Fold the jacket in half down the center
  • Fold the bottom to the top
  • (Optional) Encase the folded jacket in a dry-cleaning bag

Place it into your suitcase, on the top to avoid additional pressure. There are some variants of this “pocket” method you can try, too.

If you have limited space, for example, when packing a suit in a backpack, or if you want to know how to fold a suit in a carry-on, this is for you.

  • Pop both shoulders of the jacket inside out
  • Fold it in half so the lapels touch (the lining will be on the outside)
  • Fold it again, in thirds

It is ready to pack. This one is easier than it sounds, so try the following video if you need a visual—it also shows you how to fold the trousers, which we are about to cover.

Now your jacket is done, let’s get the trousers packed. You can use any of the jacket folds we’ve covered here for this.

  • Simply lay your suit pants out folded in half lengthways (one full leg visible)
  • Place the folded jacket in the middle, around knee height
  • Fold the cuffs up and over the jacket, then the belt section (in thirds)

Now your jacket and pants are in a neat square, ready to pack.

Ivory Cotton Twil Shirt by Oliver Wicks

Remove your collar stays before packing, so they don’t bend. Also, take off any boutonnieres, collar pins, etc. so they don’t get pressed flat or pushed into the wrong sections of material.

  • Spread out your dress shirt face down on a hard, flat surface, buttoned up
  • Fold the sleeves toward the center, up the middle
  • They’ll look crisscrossed.
  • Now, fold the cuff straight up the back on both sides to meet the collar
  • Fold the shoulder of each side to the centerline (meet in the middle)
  • Now, fold the hem to the collar

Invest in a drawstring shoe bag to pack your dress shoes . You can see these simple bags in the following make-your-own video , but they can be bought commercially, too. Grocery bags will do, but c’mon—let’s be elegant.

The bag will keep wax, polish, and any dirt from impacting the rest of your luggage. Ideally, use two and pack the shoes individually at the bottom of your bag. If necessary, you can pack them in one together—place the soles on the outside, and the shoe heel to toe. This may crush them together a little, though.

You can roll up socks, ties , belts , bracers, pocket squares, and other accessories and place them in the shoes for safekeeping and extra space.

However, we do not advise storing cufflinks, watches, or other expensive and small jewelry items in your shoes. Those are best placed in your carry-on luggage in a small, discrete bag for safety. They should not be checked due to theft risk. You can grab a cheap woman’s jewelry roll to keep them safe and easy to find. There are many styles of these—you can see one in the following DIY video . A drawstring bag or old sock will do in a pinch but if you let the individual pieces move against each other, they could scratch or catch.

Packing a Suit—Dos and Don’ts

Lava red striped navy silk tie by Oliver Wicks

Now you know how to pack a suit for a flight, let’s look at some travel dos and don'ts.

  • Take the time to pack properly—the tired traveler on the other side with a near-immaculate, safe suit will thank you!
  • Steam your garment before you go—just make sure it dries
  • Consider taking a garment bag along to place the suit into when you unpack
  • Unpack your suit as soon as you can and hang it
  • Place your suit on top of your luggage, and your shoes at the bottom
  • Throw some spare (clean) plastic bags and a dry cleaning bag into your luggage. They fold to nothing, weigh nothing, and will be useful for storage and hanging when you arrive
  • Bonus point if you can arrange for the airline to slap a “Fragile” sticker on your suitcase.
  • Never pack a damp garment, ever—mold and damage happen quickly
  • Don’t crush, tightly crease, press, or force your suit, as this can do long-term damage
  • Don’t place items on top of it in the bag
  • Never place shoes on top of garments—not even your unmentionables, let alone your suit!
  • Don’t leave pins, cufflinks, boutonnieres, and other sharp or metallic items in packed suits—they can snag, catch, and cause damage
  • Never pack valuable jewelry and accessory items in checked luggage

Now you know how to pack a suit for travel like a true pro! Your investment garment will arrive as safely as it left, and you will have minimal work getting it ready to wear on the other side.

Don’t be disheartened if your suit still arrives with minor wrinkling. It’s often an unavoidable aspect of traveling, but follow these steps and you will greatly reduce the problem. If possible, it is always a good idea to have a plan on how you might deal with minor issues at the other end.

AmazonBasics Trifold Garment Bag : Best Budget Garment Bag

AmazonBasics Preimum Garment Bag

If you’re on a budget, shopping on Amazon can be a great way to save on affordable luggage and travel gear. AmazonBasics is an in-house brand that focuses on selling functional, highly-rated products at affordable prices, from AA batteries to outdoor furniture.

The AmazonBasics Trifold Garment Bag is a simple and well-thought out carry-on size garment bag with a carry handle and padded shoulder strap.

The simple hanging design makes it very easy to pack your clothes with their hangers. There are two tie-down straps to prevent creases.

In addition to the clothes storage, there are tons of internal and external zippered pockets for packing socks, shoes, ties, electronics, books, pens, an anything else you can think of.

Victorinox Werks 6.0 Global Carry-On : Best Carry-On Garment Bag

Victorinox Werks 6.0 Softside Global Carry-on

Victorinox is best known for making the classic Swiss Army Knife, but they also build some very functional and durable travel gear.

I personally prefer just having one carry-on , and I don’t want to deal with suitcase and a separate garment bag on the plane. The Victorinox Werks 6.0 Global Carry-On solves that problem with an innovative design that includes a dedicated garment folder in a standard carry-on suitcase.

At first glance, this is a fairly typical carry-on, with spinner wheels and a large zippered main compartment. Inside, though, there is a fold-out panel and a hanging clip for formal clothes.

The biggest downside is that the garment folder isn’t very long, so it won’t be ideal for longer items like full-length dresses. It’s still one of the best men’s carry-on options for traveling with a suit, though.

Away Garment Bag : Best Garment Bag for Suits

Away Garment Bag

Away is a startup travel brand that has rocked the internet with their clever and omnipresent marketing. They make sleek, beautiful products that are designed to take some of the stress out of travel.

The Away Garment Bag is a super simple hanging design that looks good and is easy to use. There aren’t any totally unique features, but it does work really well for packing up to two suits.

One of the best features is the built-in strap that makes it really easy to attach this garment bag to the side of your suitcase. This makes it easier to roll through the airport and keeps your other hand free. There’s also a shoulder strap if you want to carry it that way.

Samsonite Just Right Garment Carrier : Best Garment Bag for Dresses

Samsonite Just Right Garment Carrier

Samsonite is the most recognizeable luggage brand in the world. Their products are everywhere, and for good reason: they build solid luggage and travel bags at a wide range of pricepoints.

Traveling with a dress isn’t always easy, but the Samsonite Just Right Garment Carrier is designed to eliminate the hassle. It’s long hanging design makes is really easy to pack, even with long dresses, and there are plenty of pockets for accessories, including shoe pockets for two pairs of shoes.

You get plenty of options for carrying this bag. There’s a tote handle, adjustable shoulder strap, and a luggage handle-passthrough.

The only problem with this garment bag is that it probably doesn’t have enough storage space to replace your main carry-on, so you’ll have to bring both through the airport.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Checked Rolling Garment Bag : Best Rolling Garment Bag

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Checked Rolling Garment Bag

Travelpro was founded by an airline pilot who invented the original upright rolling suitcase. He started by making luggage for flight crews, and now Travelpro has a full range of luggage and bags for all travelers.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 Checked Rolling Garment Bag is a big two-wheeled bag with hanging storage for suits, dresses, dress shirts, and more. The metal hanger clip makes it super easy to pack and is very secure, so you know your clothes won’t shift during travel.

I really love the wheeled design, especially for a large garment bag like this. Rolling luggage is much easier to move through the airport than traditional garment bags that you have to carry in your hand or on your shoulder.

My biggest complaint is the size. This bag is huge, and for most people it will be overkill. If you’re bringing a lot of hanging clothing, though, it can’t be beaten.

Halfday Garment Duffel : Best Garment Duffel Bag

Halfday Travel Garment Duffel

Many garment bags are pretty single-purpose. They work well at carrying a suit or dress, and that’s about it. If you’re looking for something more versatile garment duffel bags may be the way to go.

The Halfday Garment Duffel Bag is a unique design that can open out into a full garment bag, and then zipper together to create a duffel bag for the rest of your items. If you want one compact bag that can hold a suit or dress and a weekend’s worth of clothes, this is it.

This definitely isn’t the best dedicated garment bag out there, but it really nails it when it comes to versatility.

Briggs & Riley Carry-On Garment Spinner : Best Wheeled Garment Bag

Briggs & Riley Baseline 21” Garment Spinner

If you’re looking for an easy-to-pack, easy-to-roll garment bag on wheels, the Briggs & Riley Carry-On Garment Spinner is a slick carry-on garment bag that rolls on four spinner wheels.

This luxury garment bag combines the convenience of wheeled luggage with the ability to secure and protect clothing during travel. You can fit up to three suits inside and have plenty of room for everything else you need for a short trip.

Inside there are tons of zippered pouches for shoes, accessories, and more. Every inch of space is well used, and the organization features make it easy to have a designated space for everything. Seriously, I’ve never seen a garment bag that’s this well-thought-out in terms of organization.

Additionally, the exterior pocket gives you a space for essential items you want easy access to without opening the main compartment.

NOMATIC Garment Bag : Best Men’s Garment Bag

NOMATIC Garment Bag

NOMATIC got their start through crowdfunding, and now they build a wide array of sleek travel backpacks and bags. While they’re best known for their laptop and travel backpacks, they also make a solid carry-on garment bag.

For men, traveling with a garment bag usually means carrying a suit, whether you’re traveling for. Your top priority should be arriving at your destination with a crisp and uncrumpled. The NOMATIC Garment Bag is simple, lightweight, and perfect for keeping your suit jacket, pants, and dress shirts in pristine condition during travel.

This lightweight garment bag is clean, simple, easy to pack, and easy to carry. It can hang from a wall hook, doorknob, or in a closet for easy packing, and it zips completely over your suit to keep it from shifting around.

The shoulder strap and luggage pass-through also give you options for carrying it through the airport.

Unlike some other options on this list, this is definitely nothing more than a suit garment bag. While it’s great at that purpose, it doesn’t have the same versatility as some of the convertible duffel bag or wheeled luggage options.

CALPAK Compakt Garment Bag : Best Hanging Garment Bag

Calpak Compakt Garment Bag

Hanging garment bags are some of the easiest ones to use. You can simply hang them up from a wall hook or in a closet, and then you have full access for packing and unpacking.

The CALPAK Compakt Garment Bag is one of the best in this category. When packed, it’s compact and lightweight, and when you unfold it and hang it up it’s like having a whole mini closet open up in front of you, with easy hanging storage and a wide array of interior and exterior pockets.

Unfolded, the whole bag zips wide open. There is a simple loop for hanging clothes, and it’s super easy to pack in dresses or suits.

You also get a shoe compartment, small zippered accessory pockets, and see-through mesh pockets that make it easy to see what’s in each.

Zegur Suit Carry-On Garment Bag : Best Garment Bag for Air Travel

Zegur Suit Carry-on Garment Bag

The Zegur Suit Carry-On Garment Bag is a solid product that manages to pack in the features of a deluxe travel garment bag at an impressively low price. It folds out wide to make it easy to pack hanging clothes, and has padded interior straps to prevent creases.

In addition to the garment storage, this bag has a wide-opening front pocket that’s loaded with smaller organizing compartments. There’s even a padded sleeve for your laptop!

These additional features make this a perfect carry-on to load with all your travel essentials and throw in the overhead compartment.

Travelpro Crew Carry-On Rolling Garment Bag : Best Rolling Garment Bag Carry-On

Travelpro Crew VersaPack Carry-On Rollig Garment Bag

I’m a huge fan of rolling garment bags, especially when they have enough space and extra pockets to serve as my main carry-on.

The Travelpro Crew Carry-On Rolling Garment Bag is durable, stylish, and uber-organized. It has great storage for your formal clothing plus tons of compartments for other clothing and accessories. On shorter trips, this could easily be your only piece of luggage. I love that versatility!

The fold-out design makes it very easy to pack suits or dresses into this carry-on garment bag, and padded tie-down straps keep everything in place.

Wally Bags Trifold Carry-On Wedding Dress Travel Bag : Best Wedding Dress Garment Bag

WallyBags Tri-Fold Wedding Dress Garment Bag

If you’re traveling with a wedding dress, you want something that’s specifically made for that purpose. The Wally Bags Wedding Dress Travel Bag has extra length and features that make it perfect for long wedding dresses.

At the top of the bag there is a unique clamping system that holds hangers securly in place. You can fit multiple full-length dresses and won’t have to worry about them shifting around.

Finally, this carry-on garment bag is easy to carry with the detachable shoulder strap, carry handles, or luggage attachment.

Travelpro Platinum Elite 25” Check-In Spinner : Best Garment Bag Luggage

Travelpro Platinum Elite 25

If you’re shopping for both a garment bag and standard checked luggage , it makes a lot of sense to get one product that can fill both purposes.

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Check-In is primarily a medium softside checked suitcase, and it works great as a standard suitcase. There’s more going on here though. The built-in folding suiter also makes this a fully capable travel garment bag for suits, dresses, or other formal clothing.

With this super versatile travel bag, you can pack your formal clothing and still have room for other clothing and essentials for longer trips.

Modoker Convertible Garment Bag : Best Convertible Garment Bag

Modoker Convertible Garment Bag

The final product on this list of travel garment bags is a unique convertible design. The Modoker Convertible Garment Bag can open out wide to make it easy to pack hanging clothing. Then, you zip up the garment panel, fold the bag together, and it becomes a compact travel duffel bag.

The materials and build quality aren’t the best, but as a tradeoff, this bag is less than half the price of many other highly-rated garment bags. And it is well-designed and functional.

Overall, the Modoker Convertible Garment Bag is a very versatile, affordable choice for all types of travel.

Ease of packing is one of the most important features in any garment bag. Look for a design that can lay totally flat and open for packing. You also want a bag with built-in straps to hold your clothes in place while you fold them.

You should ideally look for a clothes bag with a low-profile hanging loop. This function allows you to effortlessly hang the bag in your closet, hotel room, or restroom while you pack and unpack it.

Quality Materials

Never choose a garment bag made of low-quality materials. Poor-quality fabric can lead your bag to flex or crease, which defeats the purpose of using a garment bag. Always pay great attention to the material of the garment bag you want to buy. Choose a product that is made of a sturdy material that will not crease even when folded.

Carry-on garment bags normally have maximum dimensions of 22 x 14 x 9 inches. As a result, it’s usually a good idea to double-check the maximum size at the airlines you plan to use before purchasing.

The length of the carrier bag is another crucial feature. If you plan to carry lengthy gowns or dresses, be sure the bag can hold them and maintain them wrinkle-free.

Whether you’re sneaking off for a beach weekend or heading out to the mountains, a quick weekend getaway deserves a good bag of its own. The best weekender bags will hold enough clothes for a few different activities without weighing you down — and of course, those activities all require shoes of their own. Rather than letting all that sand or trail dirt collect on your clothes, a separate shoe compartment keeps your dirty footwear contained and clothes unbothered.

We tested 37 bags, including weekenders, duffels, and convertible garment bags, checking for capacity, design, portability, durability, and value across all contenders. While we’ll keep our tests going for a total of six months, upon our initial testing, these were our winners for the best weekender bags with shoe compartments.

Best Overall

Béis the weekender.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Organization 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5

Plenty of space, smart structure, a slew of organizational features, and a reasonable price tag all put this weekender ahead of the competition.

If you're flying with this bag, you'll need to place it in an overhead bin because of its size.

Béis has been popping up on stylish travelers’ radar for a while, and its popularity is well-deserved. We were extremely impressed by the Weekender’s capacity, holding everything we needed with space leftover for a laptop in the designated pocket. It can basically fit everything you’d put in a rolling carry-on, thanks to the large zippered bottom compartment and roomy main space. The main compartment opens similar to a folding laundry hamper, with a rectangular shape held open by a wire frame, creating an extra-spacious opening to fit in all your items without having to squish them. Even better, it can still fit in an overhead bin even when fully packed.

You’ll also find a whole slew of organizational features inside and outside the bag, with external pockets on either side (including one that can unzip on the bottom to become a trolley pass-through), a padded laptop pocket with a fabric fastener strap to keep your computer in place, internal slip and zipper pockets, and more. Even when loaded up, we found it comfortable to carry via either the hand straps or the padded, adjustable shoulder strap, with no digging into your shoulder or annoying banging into your leg or hip. It also held up well against being shoved off the counter multiple times, and everything inside stayed nearly perfectly in place. The only scuffing happened to the small feet on the bottom, but really, no one is looking at the bottom of your bag anyway. The cherry on top is the affordable price tag, coming in at just over $100, and six colors to choose from, whether you prefer neutral beige or trendy pink.

Cotopaxi Viaje Weekender Bag

  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

This durable tote features exterior straps for a yoga mat, a towel, or a longboard for a weekend on the go.

It can only fit about two days worth of clothing, so it may not work for overpackers.

This bag earned a perfect score during testing, and we especially loved it for its lightweight, durable material and thoughtful features, like the exterior straps on the outside that can hold long items like a yoga mat or a towel. The zippers felt sturdy and smooth, and we liked that they had little tags on them to make it easier to open and close them. This bag does not have a crossbody strap like most weekenders — instead, it has two short handles and two longer handles so you can either carry it by your hands or over your shoulder like a tote bag. The material feels like it can handle tough outdoor weather conditions and not get ruined, which would be great for camping or a beach day. It can only fit about two days worth of clothing, but that keeps it from getting too heavy since it doesn’t have the crossbody strap, and the bottom compartment adds some extra space.

The Details: 21 x 15 x 12 inches | 1.5 pounds | 35-liter capacity | Recycled polyester

Best Rolling Duffel

Calpak stevyn duffel.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

The Stevyn offers solid capacity, design, and durability.

There’s no tote-style carry option; just hand carry or a longer cross-body strap.

If you want not just a shoe pocket, but also a pocket for everything else, go for the Stevyn. Calpak’s duffel is the perfect size for a weekend — not too big, but still roomy enough to fit a few outfits. It’s simple but well-designed, with its shoe compartment on the bottom as well as multiple interior pockets. It stands up on its own, which is great for packing. There’s one small external pocket, as well as a luggage trolley sleeve, though we would have liked more external pockets. Carry it by hand with two short handles or use the one long cross-body strap; while this strap is padded and comfortable, we would have liked to be able to use the hand-carry handles to carry it over our shoulder, tote-style. It was very durable in our tests, showed no effects from getting tossed around, and seemed easy to wipe down in the event of any dirt. There are nine colors to choose from, including two prints, and you can also upgrade to a larger wheeled version if you don’t want to carry it or need more space.

The Details: 19.5 x 14 x 10.5 inches | 47-liter capacity | 3.3 pounds | Polyester

Monos Metro Weekender

The Metro holds a truly impressive amount within its sleek exterior, which also won’t show scuffs even if you have to gate-check it.

It can get heavy quickly, especially if you take advantage of its large capacity.

If you believe your vacation style starts before you’ve even left home, the Monos Weekender is your best bet. The capacity is truly impressive, fitting clothing for five days while still being able to slide under an airplane seat — we even managed to fit four pairs of shoes in the bottom shoe compartment. It also has a laptop pocket in the back exterior and several interior organizational pockets (though we would have liked a water bottle holder as well). When carrying, use the trolley sleeve (which you can also zip to turn into a pocket) to place it on top of a suitcase, sling it on with a removable shoulder strap, or use the hand-carry handles in your hands or over your shoulder. We tested the nylon model (it also comes in a vegan leather option) and found it ridiculously durable, even when we had to check it through on a flight. You can choose from four darker shades in the nylon style, or three different brown vegan leather hues; both styles are water-resistant.

The Details: 19.25 x 10.25 x 14.75 inches | 5.18 (nylon) or 5.34 (vegan leather) pounds | 47.5-liter capacity | Nylon or microfiber vegan leather

Best Lightweight

Dagne dover landon carryall bag.

Dagne Dover

  • Ease of Use 5 /5

This softside bag feels both spacious and high-quality.

It does develop some visible creases at the fold points, but they aren’t too noticeable.

If you want to make sure your bag doesn’t weigh you down, the neoprene or mesh of the Landon may make it the best weekender for you. We tested the large version, which comes in 10 colors in neoprene and three colors in Dagne Dover’s air mesh fabric; there are also four other sizes available, from XS to XL. It had plenty of space for our packing list and could even have fit an extra pair of shoes or additional outfit with the sides unsnapped. Rather than a specific separate compartment, it instead includes a shoe-specific bag that matches the external material. There are also several interior pockets, one exterior pocket ideal for stashing your phone, and a trolley sleeve. The hand-carry handles snap together, and you can also snap down the zipper on the sides to make it more compact. If you don’t want to hand-carry, there’s also an adjustable, removable shoulder strap. Because the fabric is so flexible, we found it developed some creases at the fold points, which aren’t too noticeable but did keep it from looking completely pristine.

The Details: 16.5 x 9 x 11 inches | 3.06 pounds | 29-liter capacity | Neoprene or air mesh

Best Garment Bag

Mark & graham commuter 2-in-1 garment bag.

Mark & Graham

  • Quality 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

This neutral bag is packed with hidden pockets and can hold everything you need.

It is on the pricier end.

Getting your initials on your luggage is an easy way to feel extra-fancy (or amp up your gifting), and that’s just one of the ways this garment bag will enhance your trip. It folds from a flat garment bag into a duffel, with two separate pouches for shoes on the ends. It’s easy to manipulate throughout the process, with a smooth folding process and zippers. It held all of our packing list with ease, and has thoughtful features like a phone pocket, a hook for clothing, and internal button compartments. It also still felt light even after being packed full, while still feeling durable enough to stand up to stiletto scratches, and the leather padding on the straps was very comfortable.

The Details: 22 x 10 x 10 inches | Nylon and leather

Best Organization

Arlo skye the weekender.

There are tons of pockets, pouches, and places to organize pretty much anything you need for a weekend away.

The padding does not move with the adjustable shoulder strap, so it may not align perfectly with your shoulder.

This structured weekender looks very minimalist but, like many of our favorite Arlo Skye luggage pieces , it has a ton of thoughtful features for packing swiftly and efficiently. There are slip pockets and a big zippered pocket on the inside, and a very large zippered pocket on both sides of the bag (large enough to fit a jacket if needed) containing various slip pockets and smaller zippered pockets for laptops, tablets, chargers, books, and more. The shoe compartment on the side is also very helpful for separating items. Although the bag is spacious, it’s still compact enough to fit underneath an airplane seat as a personal item , and it’s lightweight and easy to carry. The shoulder strap is adjustable, but the padding on it is not, so it may not line up perfectly with your shoulder unless you have the strap set at just the right length. We tested the lighter mint color of this bag, which didn’t get dirty or damaged at all when we flung it off a table onto the floor multiple times. If mint isn’t your vibe, it also comes in black. Another plus: it has an RFID lining for added security.

The Details: 20.5 x 9.1 x 11.4 inches | 2.4 pounds | 31-liter capacity | Nylon/polyester blend

Best Leather

Deux mains mission essential duffel bag.

This bag is stylish and made of high-quality leather.

It’s on the smaller side, especially if you want to bring a laptop.

If you want to travel light and in leather, opt for the Mission duffel. The material feels very high-quality, with stylish blue accents, and the bag is easy and comfortable to transport thanks to padded handles and a removable padded shoulder strap. This sleek pick works best for overnight trips as it will be a tight squeeze inside for several outfit changes along with toiletries and a laptop. The shoe compartment has its own zipper, but that eats into the interior of the main pocket (and will take up a decent percentage of the available space with larger footwear). We did encounter some problems with the zipper sticking and snagging when the bag was packed full, so be mindful of how much is stashed inside.

The Details: 20 x 11 x 10.5 inches | Leather

Best Budget

Etronik large overnight weekender.

  • Organization 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Durability 3.5 /5

This budget-friendly pick includes two shoe covers and a small pouch, and the bottom shoe compartment has air vents.

We wish the nylon material was thicker to better protect the bag, and there is no laptop sleeve.

This $50 weekender is an amazing value considering how spacious it is and all of its thoughtful features. The nylon material is waterproof and the bottom shoe compartment has two air vents to prevent shoes or dirty clothing from stinking up the bag. We were able to fit two pairs of shoes, including heeled booties, in the bottom compartment, and we think there was enough room to even fit taller boots. There are two external pockets to hold water bottles, a USB charging port with a phone pocket nearby, and more pockets inside — although there is no laptop sleeve. The bag also comes with two shoe bag covers and a small pouch that you can use for small items, which we thought was great for maximizing storage and keeping items protected. The 55-liter bag was pretty large but not overwhelming to wear or carry thanks to the lightweight material and shoulder padding. We do wish the material was a little thicker and more structured to better protect belongings, but we were impressed by this budget-friendly option nonetheless. It is also available in more than 40 colors, so there truly is something for everyone.

The Details: 21.7 x 16.5 x 9.4 inches | 2.2 pounds | 55-liter capacity | Nylon

Best Colors

Calpak luka duffel bag.

  • Durability 4 /5

The puffy material and fun color options make this weekender stand out without being too bulky.

There is a laptop sleeve, but it does not have any protective cushioning.

One of our favorite things about this poofy, lightweight bag is that it comes in about 20 different colors that are so fun to choose from, including bright, limited-edition shades like watermelon, bubble gum, celery, cobalt, and rose gold, or more neutral staples like chocolate, oatmeal, and matte black. There are so many options that it’s nearly impossible to pick just one. The duffel comes with a removable crossbody strap and long, puffy shoulder strap, and we found the shoulder straps much more comfortable to carry than the crossbody strap during testing. There is a shoe compartment that you can access from the side of the bag that ultimately lines the bottom of the bag. You should be able to fit two pairs of shoes or one pair of boots comfortably inside. There are multiple pockets inside for organization, including a laptop sleeve — although we wish it were padded for more protection. The size of the bag is compact, fitting enough for a two-night trip, but it also comes in a larger size for longer trips.

The Details: 12 x 16 x 7 inches | 2.1 pounds | 22-liter capacity | Polyester

Béis The Convertible Mini Weekender

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 3.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This is the perfect combination of portability and packing space, plus it's easy to both pack and carry.

You may encounter some trouble closing the top if you overpack it, and the zippers holding the shoe compartment in place showed some durability concerns.

Don’t be fooled by the “mini” here — this bag had more than enough space for two to three days’ worth of clothing. We did struggle slightly closing the bag with the full packing list included, since the wire frame that holds it open for easy packing was stiff when the bag was at full capacity. You still get Béis’ removable laptop sleeve, zippered side pocket, and slip pockets, which we found to be the perfect amount of pockets. The bottom compartment also fully zips off, giving you a separate packing cube and smaller tote if you want something even more compact. It’s the perfect size for a short trip, and can even fit under some airplane seats. The straps are comfortable to carry in either formation as well. We did have some concerns during our durability tests; after we dropped it off the table one time, the bottom compartment zippers split, raising some concerns about their longevity.

The Details: 16 x 8 x 15.7 inches | 33 liters | 3.4 pounds | Poly canvas

Most Durable

Travelpro x travel + leisure drop-bottom weekender bag.

Bloomingdale's

The shoe compartment easily fits four or five pairs of shoes.

We wish it had more pockets or other organizational features.

This spacious weekender holds multiple outfits, a toiletry kit, makeup bag, and more in its wide main compartment and the separate shoe compartment easily fits up to five pairs of shoes. The main compartment also features a zippered pocket inside to store valuables and one small open pocket on the outside for items you'll want quick access to while you're on the go. We love that this large bag still fits easily under airplane seats, so it can be used as either a personal item or carry-on bag, depending on your packing needs. Throughout our tests, we tossed the entire packed bag off a table and the fabric didn't show any signs of rips, snags, or even dirt transfer. We also love the padded shoulder strap that made carrying the heavy duffel comfortable and distributed the weight evenly. Unlike other bags with shoe compartments, the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Drop-bottom Weekender's shoe compartment can also fully detach from the rest of the bag, so you can make it even more compact if needed.

The Details: 15 x 8.5 x 9 inches | 42 liters | 3.3 pounds | Cotton, polyester, and leather trim

Other Weekender Bags With Shoe Compartments We Liked

Here is another bag we tested and liked, although it had some shortcomings.

Halfday The Garment Duffel : This bag starts out as a flat garment bag, then folds up into a duffel shape, creating an additional space in the middle. Overall, we found it easy to pack and use, with well-built and well-planned construction and thoughtful details. However, you can only fit one shoe on each side, limiting the number of pairs you can bring (which is extra problematic if you’re packing for, say, a wedding weekend).

Our tests for the best weekenders with shoe compartments focused on five key attributes: capacity, design, portability, durability, and value. We tested a total of 37 products, including weekenders, duffels, and convertible garment-style bags, and will continue to put them through their paces over the course of six months.

We packed each bag with two pairs of pants (sweatpants and jeans), four shirts, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a full toiletry bag, noting how much space was (or wasn’t) left once it was full. While packing, we noted the organizational and structural features of each bag, particularly the pockets and zippers. Once the bags were full, we walked around carrying them in all the styles they had available — using the shoulder strap(s), across the body, over the shoulder, and in hand, and noting how comfortable and easy it was to do so. Then it was time for the durability test, which meant dropping the fully packed bags from waist height three to five times, aiming to land on different parts of the bag each time. Once they survived, we also performed an overall value assessment to consider how much we would be willing to pay for each bag, based on their quality, design, and any included accessories.

Tips for Buying Weekenders With Separate Shoe Compartments

Consider your destinations and use cases.

Ideally you’ll only need to own one weekender, so consider your most frequent weekend trip scenarios. Are you traveling a lot for weddings? A foldable garment bag may be your best pick for helping keep your formalwear unwrinkled. Heading into the country? You may want to look for something made of a more durable material and with a larger capacity to hold more gear. You’ll also want to think about your personal tendencies to under- or over-pack and decide whether you want a smaller or larger bag.

Factor in your additional organizational needs

Shoe compartments aren’t the only form of organization out there. If you’re traveling with your laptop, you may want a bag that has a separate padded sleeve or compartment to keep it safe. One-bag-only travelers may want more external pockets to have smaller items within easy reach in transit, or perhaps you’re an organization fiend who wants an internal pocket for every individual item.

Marketing, mostly. Consider a weekender to be a smaller, trendy subcategory of the classic duffel. Weekenders tend to be smaller, while duffel bags overall come in a wider range of sizes. They also tend to be a little more stylish and have more organizational pockets, though that varies across brands. Weekenders also tend to have a few more vertical inches than more cylindrical duffel styles.

If you choose one of our picks above, your shoes will already have a snug little spot of their own to call home. But in addition to a shoe compartment, there are a few other methods you can employ. If you are a devotee of the packing cube lifestyle, many sets now come with included shoe bags, or you can just repurpose one of your packing cubes (though if you prefer a mesh style, dirt may be able to escape that way). If you’d prefer to reuse items around your house (props to you), you can also wrap your shoes in a plastic grocery bag or tuck them inside a shower cap.

Most likely, yes; it depends on the size of your bag and your airline’s size restrictions. Most overhead bin carry-ons are around 22 x 14 x 9 inches, while underseat personal items have much more variance by airline. Check the regulations of your airline to make sure, especially if you’re flying an airline that’s especially strict about the overhead bin vs. underseat storage. Since many of our best weekenders are soft-sided, though, you may have some extra wiggle room if you don’t pack them to capacity.

Last year, I found myself rolling around a suitcase more times than I care to admit. Between a handful of styling gigs, visits with friends and family, and various romantic getaways, it felt like my bright pink luggage had become my go-to bag — and honestly, I was over it.

So, I caved and ordered the seyfocnia Rolling Garment Bag on Amazon for $70, hoping it would become my new travel companion.

seyfocnia Rolling Garment Bag

seyfocnia Rolling Garment Bags

Typically, I’m a messy overpacker — I squish and shove everything until it fits, then worry about wrinkles once I arrive. But this suitcase doesn’t allow for that. You must lay all your clothes flat inside the garment bag part, otherwise it’s harder to zip up the sides to form a duffle bag. That detail forced me to stay organized and really plan out my outfits.

seyfocnia Rolling Garment Bag

There is also one huge side compartment that’s meant to be used for shoes, and for me, it was able to hold at least three pairs (including boots). That’s because once the duffle is zipped into place, the clothes inside the garment bag actually wrap around the shoe pocket, and you might even be left with extra room inside your bag.

seyfocnia Rolling Garment Bag

seyfocnia Rolling Garment Bag

One thing I didn’t love about the rolling garment bag is the cart rod, which slides into a sleeve in the back and makes the suitcase rollable. Because my duffle was fully packed, the balance was off, and my suitcase kept tipping to one side instead of rolling easily.

I also wasn’t quite sure where to put the crossbody strap when I wasn’t slinging my bag over my shoulder (it was dragging on the ground a bit), but it does unhook easily, so maybe that’s a me problem.

While thi s duffle was definitely light enough to tote around the airport and small enough to fit into the overhead compartment on the plane, I did end up checking my bag on the way back. It arrived back in New York safe and in-tact, which is always impressive for an under-$100, material suitcase.

Half price compared to station lockers and airport lockers

Luggage lockers, also called city lockers, are generally at least double as expensive on a daily basis compared to LuggageHero’s luggage storage service.

Until recently, travelers could only stow their bags in these luggage lockers offering very little flexibility in regard to pricing and where to go, and luggage deposit. Also, LuggageHero offers stores in countless places in order for you to always have the option of dropping off your luggage in a safe environment. Unlike luggage lockers in stations and airports, LuggageHero offers both hourly and daily rates. LuggageHero strives to offer flexible and cheap luggage storage nearby you at all times.
